Lots of info for the casual rider, July 25, 2007
By Third Degree member since 1991 (Virginia Beach, VA USA)

I recently bought a new bike, and rather than transfer my older model Cateye, I bought this upgrade model. I normally take an 8-mile ride on my hybrid bike 2 - 3 times per week. Basically, I want to know how fast I'm going and how far I've travelled. I bought this Cateye because it also tells me how many calories I've burned. It also gives the time, total distance, maximum speed, average speed and elapsed time.
It is very easy to install and set-up (no tools required), as well as simple to operate. Even if you do more intense riding, this device should exceed your expectations. You get a lot for the price.

Solid Bike Computer, July 2, 2007
By C. Staron (Glen Ellyn, IL USA)
|
|
I've had the bike computer for about a month and have been very happy thus far. The instructions for installation weren't the best, but if you take your time, you should be up and running relatively quickly. It's easy to scroll through the readouts and reset for new trips. I don't have any problems reading the display except at night (but I rarely ride my bike at night).
I'm only giving it 4 stars because the brackets for holding the computer and sensor seem a little cheap. Similar models have a plastic bracket to hold it in place, while this model does not. However, I usually ride on a limestone path and haven't experienced any problems with the sensor or computer staying in place.

Great Product, Great Value, December 17, 2007
By M. Nushart (Prescott, AZ United States)

This unit was very easy to install and set up. It took less than 20 minutes from package to operation. Based on mile markers on trails, the units accuracy is within .01 miles per mile ridden. Continues to work well on rough trails.

Great value, accurate, easy but flimsy install, July 19, 2007
By gggonzalez (Weston, FL United States)

I have had this item for a few weeks. The distance accuracy is very good, I compared it by using a car, and [...] right on the money. I assume the timing aspect is accurate, so the speed indicated should be right on as well.
I got this particular model because of the estimated calorie consumption. I am not sure what formula they use, but it seems pretty accurate, and the results tend to agree with various tables and formulas I have seen on the internet for "Calories used while bicyling".

Instructions suck, July 12, 2009
By crb (Reno, NV USA)
|
|
I like the bicycle computer. The instructions are just pictures and if you follow them, the thing won't work. After looking up the instructions online, I was able to look at the trouble shooting part. The picture instructions show the sensor thing on the outside of the fork, when, in reality, it should be installed on the inside, close to the wheel because it needs to be really close to the magnet to work. Once I figured that out, and put the sensor in the proper position, everything started working perfectly.

Good value for money, August 12, 2008

Finally,I know exactly the distance I am going!Plus average speed max speed and time on the bicycle. The only non accurate display is the calories burnt.I wear a HRM and my number at the end is by far bigger! So don't rely on this a lot....Easy to mount and use just a push of only one button.I like the cateye products. They look good and they are easy to use.

Nice little unit, June 20, 2008
By Brian Miller
|
|
Got this for my new bike. It's wired and a breeze to install with the included zip ties. If you're having issues with the installation go to the cateye website, where there are better instructions than what are included. Only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is because the unit is smaller than I expected and it's hard to read the smaller letters while you're riding. Other than that, it works as advertised.

Nice with a few flaws, June 13, 2010
By Mike the Bike (Guadalajara Mexico)

I like this little computer with a few exceptions:
- The reset button on the back of the unit got hung in the cylinder that it runs through causing the unit to be in an infinite "Reset" mode. After getting out the magnifying glass I was able to use a needle to get it aligned properly in the hole and the unit would reset. WHEN RESETTING, DON'T PUSH THE BUTTON IN TO FAR!
- The tie wraps are way to brittle, two of them broke during installation but there were extras in the kit. I will replace them all with better ones when I get the chance
- The magnet is not very secure and while riding fast will have a tendancy to move out towards the rim (centrifical fource#, I put a dab of shoe goo on the spoke #they are 14 gauge high polished stainless) where the magnet tightens to it to keep it secure (let it dry)and that has worked fine.
After I delt with these issues, the unit works just fine. I like the different modes as well as the ability to set it up for your exact wheel and tire size and although small it is somewhat easy to read although not so easy with polarized sunglasses. I find that I can view it the best set up parallel to the road surface but this is a personal preference. It is a nice little unit, just don't press the reset button in too far! You will get very frustrated.........

Very nice little unit, easy to install.I would of gave it 5 stars, if not for the calorie counter being so inaccurate.Go to the website caloriesperhour.com and click on bike calories burned, the cateye is about 50 to 60 % off.

Gets the job done, October 25, 2009
By Stuart|Anne (Seattle, WA)

I was very happy with a Cateye computer that I used back in the 90s. When I started biking again recently I couldn't find my old computer so I bought a Velo 8 as a replacement.
It works well, providing all the basics at a reasonable price.
Two small negatives about it
1. The cable is only long enough to reach the front wheel. This means you won't be able to use it on an indoor trainer. There's an extension cable available from Cateye, but then you're spending another $10.
2. The twist ties, when cut, present sharp edges that hurt when brushed against. My Cateye in the 90s used a screw, which was a better experience, but probably cost Cateye 5 cents more.

Not user-friendly, December 23, 2007

The product description on Amazon did not include how complicated the set up is for this item. To make matters worse the directions are illustrated but not described step by step. Didn't have the patience so back it went.

Decent basic cyclometer, July 31, 2011
By Jody Zupancic (cleveland, oh)
|
|
I cycled cross-country with this model and it held up pretty well. A few comments/concerns:
1.) Sometimes during rainstorms, it would stop recording. This was a huge annoyance to me during my tour. However, the computer itself is very waterproof/weatherproof. It sat in pouring rain, as well as extreme heat and cold for long periods of time and never stopped working. It was more of a problem with the magnet not reading during the rain.
2.) It took a while to get it to work. My bike shop had to adjust it for me and I had to do it several subsequent times. The magnet has to be in one exact location to work correctly.
3.) Do not buy this for calorie statistics. I used a Polar cycling HRM to get exact calorie and heart rate information. When I compared what my polar read for calories vs what my cateye read (used simultaneously) the cateye was very very off. If you are looking to know precisely how much you are burning and how many calories you need to replace to keep cycling, do not count on this.
4.) I would go with a wireless next time. It is simpler and one less thing to deal with.

Best Cycle computer, June 23, 2011
By Aniruddha Panchanadikar

After lots of study, I purchased 2 cateye V8 computers one for me and other for my wife. The installation was very easy and was able to finish in just 10 mins. Fitted one on MTB and other cross bike, We rode together for 10 KMS and readings in both computers were withing 100 meters, very precise.
The functions are just sufficient, especially the avarage/max speed is very good. The Pace indicator is very helpful.
I would strongly recommend this computer for all.

Good information to have/hard to read while riding, February 25, 2011
By dnevillepdx
|
|
After purchasing brand new Trek bikes, my husband and I wanted to have speedometers/odometers to measure all of our riding. The Cateye was well recommended by others on Amazon so we decided to give it a try. It was very reasonable in price and provides good information as you ride (speed, etc), and total miles ridden. My only complaint is that the screen is quite tiny for my old, tired eyes and the install can be very tricky.

Good Product - Good Price, April 26, 2011

Would have rated it a 5 star but the instructions suck. After reading the instructions for the 5th time it will begin to sink in on how to set the computer for the tire size, time, date, and mph. Or maybe its just me.

Great little computer!, October 28, 2010
By R.C.

I purchased this to go with my new hybrid bike just to get all the basic info and it's perfect! I'm a casual rider & started commuting on my bicycle so this computer has everything I need to know on it. Easy to set up and install. Small and easy to take with you. And definitely weather proof! Rode with it in pouring rain and it was fine.
The zip tie thing is a little ghetto, but nice cuz that makes the brackets easy to replace if the tie breaks anyway.

its OK , but just OK., June 9, 2011
By Seawolf

I have a Sigma on the other bike and wish that a second Sigma had
been my choice this time....Cat Eye is OK, but the reset is a small button
on the rear side that has to be pushed in with a pin, and then it gets
stuck under the case and you have to pry it loose...would NOT buy another.
Did install easily.

Terrible documentation and hardware, March 8, 2011

Cateye CC-VL810 Velo 8-Function Bicycle Computer
The instalation manual is rather pathetic! Basicaly just pictures. The set up on changing to MPH from KPH did'nt work. Skipped that, did not know how to set tire size. That info buried down further in the scant instructions. So,one can not set up the product by A then B and finally C.
Whatever, the information is enough to enable one to attach the computer to ones bike. It took me about twenty minutes. Took the bike for a ride and every thing seemed OK. Except the readings were in Kilometers. Removed computer from setting and tried once more to set to MPH. Follwed instructions and got a screen not mentioned in instructions. Removed battery and waited 10 minutes thinking computer would reset. No way, that did'nt work. Same old garbage screen. Back to Amazon.
From now on before buying anything I intend to go to the manufactures web site and view the installation manual and if i am not happy with it I will not purchase.

Not worth the money, February 9, 2011
By Cheri (Mexico)
|
|
I'm so disappointed in this item. The instructions are horrible. You're left to guess between miniscule letters and bad diagrams exactly what to do. Even if you do work it out, reset is a joke. You have to take the unit off the holder, find a small pin to push in the button and then good luck. My unit won't allow me to switch to miles. Yes, I can convert in my head, but that's not the point. I WANT MILES.
Save your money and find a better unit.

My review of the Cateye CC VL810 Velo 8, April 7, 2012
By namrats
|
|
I used to cycle regularly and due to various reasons i slowed down and recently switched from a road bike to a hybrid. From previous experience i found Cateye brand to be a very reliable and a quality item. This one is no exception!!! You dont have to be a bike guru to install it. The instructions could be better but hey i did it...anyone can do it. It does not have the cadence feature but it has everything else including the Calorie burner calculator. Wished i knew what they based that number on. There are two sizes fonts...large for the number and the smaller letters for the specific feature (calorie, time, trip, odometer etc) and with my bifocal eyes the smaller letters are a bit too small . However, if i angle them a bit , they are big enough due to the brightness of the screen which makes the letters clearer and sharper. They should have the size of the fonts ...maybe one day they will have adjustable font sizes...J/K

Great for the price. Tells my my mph, average mph, fastest mph, time spent riding, miles traveled per ride, miles traveled total, time, and calories burned. You can even quickly remove it from your bike when you stop and leave your bike unattended, to ensure nobody steals the computer.
