Basic Functions. Great Computer!!, April 2, 2008
By J. Contreras (New York, NY USA)
|
|
I was in need of a bicycle computer with these basic functions: Current speed, average speed, trip distance and total traveled distance (odometer).I went to my local bike shop and told the salesman what I needed. He, of course, tried to sell me the most expensive model with some functions that I didn't even know what they were for. In the end, after a hypnotic sale, I ended up convinced that I needed a wireless computer with not only the features mentioned above, but also one that measures altitude, temperature and heart rate.
I bought it, but I decided to make a little more research, returned the Sigma and I bought the Cateye Strada from Amazon.
At first I was surprised by how small it is (about 1.5" x 1.25"), but after installation, I think it's the right size. The installation was very simple, no tools required at all. The menu navigation is not intuitive, and required me to do something that I dread deeply: Read the manual! After all of three minutes reading it, I set the wheel size (following a chart provided in the manual) and I was ready to go.
This computer shows current speed (in mph or kph), average speed, maximum speed, trip time, trip distance, total traveled distance (odometer) and a clock.
Before my daily trip I reset all the values to zero by pressing on the face of the computer for two seconds (the odometer doesn't reset since it keeps the accumulative count of your trips) and I get the counts for my daily workout.
Also, one neat feature is that the odometer is programmable, so you can input your odometer reading when you have to change the battery.
So far, I'm very satisfied with this computer. Very precise, slick, and does a great job. Amazon did a good job with the delivery as well.

Nice evolution of the Cateye line, November 21, 2007
By Kent Peterson (Issaquah, WA USA)

I've used Cateye bike computers for several years. I like a simple wired computer because the wireless ones use two batteries (more to go wrong) and sometimes pick up false readings from things like power lines or neon signs. The Strada has a nice bracket that can work either on the handlebars or the stem and you can install it without tools. You do have to read through the instructions to figure out the right calibration number for your wheel size but once you have the computer set-up the operation is pretty straight-forward. You toggle through the computer modes with a single button press. So far, the Strada seems weather-proof.

Simple and Sturdy, January 5, 2009
By N. Hekman

As an avid commuter cyclist I put on 4000km/year in all kinds of weather. I've used several computers but this is my favourite so far. The feature I like best is that you operate it without buttons--just press the face to switch between modes. The toolless mounting is also very handy. But what drove me to write this review is the experience I had today. Biking in the dark at -10C I took a spill in a snowy patch on the road. I didn't notice until I got to work that my Strada was missing. But on the way home I found it, face down in the middle of the snowy icy road with car tire tracks right over it. Picked it up, wiped off the snow, and it's working as good as new.
My only beef with it is that the plastic handlebar mount can become brittle in the cold and break. In fact that's likely why it fell off in the first place, as the mount had broken the previous week and was holding it loosely. I wish the mount was made of metal, but as far as I can see every computer on the market uses plastic mounts.

Great product and good value for the money, April 9, 2008

It is my 2nd cateye cycling computer. It's inexpensive, durable and easy to use. Been using this for 2 months now for my bike commute to work every day. Worked very well even when it was 25F or when it was soak from thee rain.
I like large display and the no-button design.
What I would have a preferred is to have an average cadence reading.

Not so happy with it, November 3, 2009
By velocio (Mountain View, CA)
|
|
Everybody seems to be happy with it, but i am not. The lower display line (with the distance) is too hard to read (think of riding in rain or in darkness, or of people with impaired vision); that's a major drawback when following a route sheet and depending on the precise distances. And the worst: the distance reset itself to 0 more than once for me during bumpy, rattling descents.

Great computer, January 16, 2009
By Htree11 (Charleston, WV USA)

I have been using this computer for 6 months. It's easy to use, however I had the bicycle shop install it. The battery didn't last two months. It would seem that it would have lasted longer. I had to reprogram the darn thing after replacing the batteries. It was very easy to do but I lost previous information. I haven't met a easy bike computer yet.

Exactly What I Wanted, May 16, 2010
By books yay! (Spokane, WA)

After spending a bit of time comparing various bicycle computers, I opted for this one. It offered all of the feature I required and comes from a reputable company.
Yes, it took a while to install, but most bicycle computers take a while to install due to the small pieces, magnets, etc. Par for the course, eh?
The only thing missing is some type of lighting so the computer display could be read at night - for those of you who ride in the dark regularly. I don't ride at night, though, so not a huge issue for me.
Finally, the one-button operation makes this computer simple and easy to use -- especially while riding.

Simple, reliable, Cateye!, March 31, 2009
By total freak (Carnation, WA USA)

I just got my Strada cyclometer, and I couldn't be more pleased. I love the small size, and the ability to mount on the stem. Setup took 10 minutes, time I mostly spent fine-tuning the positioning of the sensor on the fork. Programming the wheel size and other settings was very easy although I wish the instructions were a bit more explicit about the need to hold down the menu button to change digits on the wheel size. Took 'er out for a spin, the speed is easy to read, and operation is hassle-free: just press the end of the unit to toggle through the displays. Hold down to clear the data. I can't say anything about durability because I just got it, but if it's like my other Cateye products that shouldn't be a problem. If you appreciate elegance and functionality in a minimal package this computer is for you.

good product when it works, September 5, 2010
By cliff3344

I've had two of these. The first one worked good for about 2 months. Then the speedometer would start to go to zero, then would start reading after you'd press on the face several times. Since the first one was so new, i just returned it and got another. The second has lasted two years and it has started doing the exact same thing. I replaced the battery, placed the magnet super close to the pickup (now it hits when I pedal hard) reset everything, checked the wires, nothing has helped. I've talked to others who have not had this problem. Surely this has happened to others. Buyer beware.

Best Cyclocomputer on the market. EVER!, December 22, 2010
By Arm&Hammer
|
|
This is my third one on my third bike. I like how simple it is to use, nice large display and easy to install.
My oldest one is going on 3 years and haven't changed the battery yet and I keep my bikes outside. It's also very durable since I have ridden in the rain several times and got it soaked, yet it still preforms flawlessly.
Most people I guess are going the wireless rout, which I don't understand? The wireless is more bulky, more weight and requires 2 batteries when they need to be replaced.
I've tried several other brands Blackburn, Bell and like this CatEye Strada (CC-RD100 ) the best ever.

An excellent basic Cyclo-comp!, September 1, 2010
By snachims

The Cateye Strada is a great cyclo-computer. It has all of your basic functions, including settings for two different bikes. It was fairly simple to install, and the single push-button design is easily usable when you're barreling down the side of the road, trying not to get squashed by an 18-wheeler. On this model, you can actually see the screen when wearing polarized sunglasses, a plus that many other computers can't claim. It's been working well for me for the past 150 miles, and my friends has clocked 1500 on his, still working like the day he bought it. Great buy!

Great computer, June 17, 2010
By rook and raven
|
|
I love this computer. It is very easy to read, even at night if there are street lights. All the usual functions are there. I have one complaint: the computer connects to the magnet via a bracket that has a very small plastic nub that holds it in place. This nub broke on my after about 3 months use. Possibly this is because I have this computer on the bike I commute with, and I was taking it off every time I locket my bike up at work. So, perhaps this is more frequent use of the mount than it was designed for. On the flip side, Cateye was extremely easy to deal with for getting a replacement bracket. I didn't even have to send in the broken one.

Great basic function computer, April 4, 2010
By W. Sly (Minnesota, USA)
|
|
If you read the other reviews you'll get a good overview. Great computer, so I"ll just add a couple of things. I received a Strada CC-RD100N computer, which according to the Cateye website is the latest incarnation of the Strada. There is, apparently, some small differences - not in features or style, but in attachment hardware and access to the battery I think. I wanted an electronic version of the setup instruction (I always misplace paper copies) and all Cateye had was the older version instruction - which are basically the same procedures, but I thought the written instructions that came with my computer were a little more clear - so I'm going to try and keep track of them.
I like the 'click' style of navigating the menu. No buttons to worry about, you simply push on the bottom of the computer to toggle thru.
Finally, I wear polarized sunglasses, but they don't seem to affect my ability to view the display. Overall, great basic computer and good value.

Good Product for the Price., February 3, 2010

There isn't a whole lot to say here, it is a Cateye. The computer looks sleek when mounted and performs well. It seems to be accurate and the battery is holding up well. The only complaint that I have is that the alternate display is a little small and tough to read, especially early in the morning or late in the evening. A larger display of the alternate information or a backlight would help greatly. Overall this is a good and solid computer.

This is a great bicycle computer. The 8 functions are all you'll ever need. I'm technically challenged so I was afraid it would be complicated to go through the functions. It's so simple and easy. Just press the button. And the computer is small so it's not distracting but still very readable. My husband installed it on my bike in less than 15 minutes. I would highly recommend this product.

I basically wanted a computer to show the distance I had ridden on a single trip and overall. This one has more functions than that, but these are the two I use. It is small and out of the way - I like it a lot. I think it might be off just a bit on the calibration, but not enough to worry about.

Everything I Need At A Glance, June 11, 2009
By Bob Paszko
|
|
I have used this Cateye Strada Computer for over 200 miles now. It is easy to read, and I can click through the 8 functions effortlessly while riding. Most of the time I keep the lower read out display on trip distance. I used to have a computer with 3 function display that allowed me to see speed, distance and real time clock, but am now used to the Strada's 2 function display.
I mounted this wired computer on a Giant Sedona DX with suspension fork and disc brakes. The left hand front disc brake forced me to mount the transmitter on the right hand side and creatively tie strap the wire along the fork to the disc brake cable up to the handle bar. Also, care had to be taken routing the 27" wire on my large 22" frame to insure trouble free operation.
Bottom line: I prefer a wired computer and this set-up works flawlessly. This is a great product, I would buy it again and I recommend it to anyone looking for a simple, compact, inexpensive computer solution to their biking needs.

Excellent Computer, June 3, 2010
By Moose (Dutchess County, NY)

I had a Cateye for an older bike which had basic funtions (odometer, speed, max). I wanted to upgrade to a computer with more functions, when I got my new road bike. I love this product. The previous one I had was used and abused for nearly 5 year; it withstood everything I did to it and them some; so I didn't consider any other brand. The only complaint I have was the instructions were not clear IMO. I personally prefer written instructions while these were pics, so I found it somewhat difficult to install (and as a matter of fact screwed it up).Otherwise I would have given 5 stars. When I returned to the bike shop with my bike and the computer, they knew exactly what was wrong and fixed it immediately. Not that I'm knocking Amazon, but, I highly recommend purchasing this item in person at a bike store so that if you run into the problems I had you can have them unscrew what you probably screwed up ;-) . I have had no other problems with it other than the cadence sensor slips from time to time and I have to readjust it. Good product, when the time comes to upgrade again, it will be a Cateye.

Disappointed, July 31, 2011
By JOAT
|
|
I bought this a few months ago and have been pretty happy with it. I guess ignorance is bliss. I have recently noticed that the speed goes to zero some times. I'm not sure how often this happens, but it is enough for me to lose faith in this product.
Today, I drove past my turn around last week. Last week, the odometer said 8.90 miles; this week it said 9.3 miles. There were some "zeroed out" times last week, I guess I just didn't realize how much.
I don't look down at it that often, but it is disconcerting to be going 15 mph one moment and zero the next - at least according to the speedometer.
Today, it cut out again. 10.24 miles out. 10.08 back on the same route. I know it cut out on the way back; it might have cut out on the way out as well.
The route time was off as well...
Updated 8/7/11: Same route, this time it was 20.52 miles roundtrip, compared to 20.32 last week.
Time to look for a new one.

review of cateye strada 8, July 10, 2011
By John Goggans (Rowlett, Texas USA)
|
|
My first bike computer was a little more upscale than this one - with cadence, etc. This one is very simple but, unlike the first one, it keeps working ! With my old one I was constantly having to readjust the pickups and they'd always quit in the middle of a ride anyway. The strada pickups seem to be less 'touchy' than those of other computers and that's a very good thing. It also has nice big numbers for those of us who no longer see as well as we used to. To switch from function to function on the strada, just press on the face. I've been very happy with it - just wish I'd gotten it sooner !

Competent for what it does, July 1, 2011
By Sylvia Weiser Wendel (North Hollywood, CA United States)
|
|
I wanted a basic computer for my bike so I would know how many miles I was riding each day. Amazon's price was well below the local bike shop's for the same item. Installing it was easier than I'd thought -- and I am no bike expert -- but getting it to operate took some thinking. The documentation wasn't particularly specific; the diagram left a lot to be desired. Eventually I understood what the lozenge-shaped bits of rubber were for -- they're to get the sensor close enough to the bike tire for the signal to register -- but once that was worked out, I had no problems with the Strada.
When I bought a new bike I decided to transfer the Strada, but the lozenge-shaped bits took off for parts unknown. I shoved some band-aids under the sensor and it's worked fine since then: inelegant, but functional. I do like knowing how many miles I'm putting on the bike, what my average speed is, how long I'm out each day; the "maximum speed" and "average speed" functions aren't particularly important to me. Because this is a basic unit, it doesn't tell me how many calories I'm burning or what my heart rate is. I may upgrade at some point, but right now the Strada does the job. The product loses one star because of the vague documentation and instructions.

Great Bike Computer, April 23, 2011
By Twild78
|
|
I purchased this for my new road bike. It replaced a bell unit I bought from Walmart. Needless to say you get what you pay for. I should have just got the Cateye right off the bat, especially considering I already have one on my mountain bike. Going forward I will always buy the cateye. The product itself (Strada)is excellent for someone who doesn't care about thr wire. It doesn't bother me at all. All in all it is a great computer for the $. The only downside is the lack of a cadence feature, and that it can be confusing to set-up. There are some good set-up videos on you tube though.

The installation was easy and quick. Product use is intuitive (user friendly). I just completed a 100 mile endurance ride with this computer. It work well, was accurate and gave me no trouble. I have had this computer for a couple weeks now and it works really good. you need to make sure that the sensor is on tight and the computer is on tight and you are all set. Tried and True, November 4, 2009
By B. Raposa (Tampa, FL USA)
|
|
For those cyclists just getting into cycling and want a really good cyclometer, this is it. It is easy to use, easy to see while riding, and works really well. This is my first experience with one, so I cannot compare it to any others, however it out-performed everything I was expecting.
The wireless version of this would likely be an easier install, but for the difference in cost, I am happy to spend 45 minutes mounting this on my bike. (I'm a perfectionist, so likely it could be done in about 30 minutes)
No complaints whatsoever; it works like a charm!

Meh., March 9, 2011
By Loren Mullen
|
|
I know that this product has its positives but personally, I really did not like this cyclocomputer. First and foremost, the wire that connects the device to the sensor on the fork snapped from the device almost immediately and the sensor itself was far below what I expected from a device with such good reviews. That's the other thing, when I bought this, the page did not explicitly say (or I couldn't find where) if the device was wireless or not. That's a pretty important feature...
Maybe there are a couple bad apples in every bunch - I ended up spending a bit more after this one broke (c'est la vie) and buying the wireless one - but I'd have to say wired products on a bicycle is more things looking to be broken and/or tangled up.
As a cyclist who carries a lot on his bike - I'm currently going to university - I carry a lot on my bike and it is imperative that I not have more on there than I need. As it is, my backpack is quite heavy and my route is 17 miles round trip. So, a waste of 30 dollars but I did find an alternative.

Bike Computer - Functional, but clumsy, August 16, 2010
By Belle, The Book Lady (Alexandria, VA United States)

This was a great idea - once I had it all hooked up, I realized that wireless would have been easier.
No problems putting it on bike; fiancee took care of that.
Do find it challenging to change the settings as the buttons are tiny and hard to use. But, easy to reset the tripdometer. Pops off easily (but not too easily) for when I park it in a public place.
Seems fairly accurate and keeps me motivated to go a bit further each time.
Love knowing cumulative miles done on the bike.

Simple simple use, September 19, 2011

Once everything was set up, this is one of the easiest bike computer I've owned. One hand operation. I honestly think a monkey can use this thing. The numbers are pretty big, so a monkey with bad eye sight wouldn't have any issues either.

Bought a second one of these because it is very simple to use, easy to read and only one battery to replace. Only one button to touch. Couldn't be easier.

The product is great, but shipped with a bad battery; it died within a week. This product must have been sitting on a shelf for a long time.

Check which version you are getting., October 14, 2011

I cracked the screen on the newer version of these by letting by bike tip over. When I bought another one it came in a box with older looking graphics, it had minor(some VERY minor) differences & doesn't work well with the harness for the newer version which was already installed on the bike. I was thinking I would have an entire set of spare parts after replacing the computer. Besides the older graphics on the box the older model can be identified by the battery cover which needs a small phillips screwdriver to open it versus the newer model which only requires a coin.
If you are cheap there are great deals on the older version.
If yours is going out(zero mph), check the easy stuff before replacing it. I would advise first making sure the sensor is aligned properly with the magnet passing close to the sensor(no large gap between the sensor & magnet) & passing by the line on the side of the sensor. Next clean the two metal contacts on the back of the computer & on the harness.

Quit working after 10 days :-(, January 13, 2012

The box was missing a part (the mount to attach the computer to the handle bar). I improvised something, but the computer quit working after 10 days. Try some other brand is my advice.

Flaky after use in the rain, January 3, 2012
By Adam Solomon (Brookline, MA USA)

I have, or rather had, two different Cateye strada bike computers. One was on my commuting bike, the other on my for-fun road bike. I bought them at separate times and both experienced the same problem. Rain made them highly unreliable. They would stop working in the rain and would work intermittently for several days after getting rained on. It was very frustrating for me. Additionally, they were unreliable in temperatures below 30F.
I've since replaced these computers with a similarly priced computer by PlanetBike.
I strongly recommend against purchasing the Cateye Strada. It just isn't a robust bike accessory.

While it worked - great. Simple, intuitive, easy to mount, good price. However, lasted only about 10 rides. Then stopped working
