5.0 out of 5 stars.  Perfect for City Commuting, February 24, 2009
By S. Kovarik (Eugene, OR USA)
These two lights make a great combination for the price. The quick-detach mounts are very straightforward to install, the lights come on and off easily and are bright enough for most conditions. I use them for a 25 mile round trip commute at least one leg of which is before or after sunlight. I use the disco mode on the rear light, and the flashing mode on the front except for the darkest areas. Another great convenience is AA and AAA batteries - I prefer to always use rechargables, so I am never at risk of not having a battery when I need one. Overall, these are very good lights and nicely round out the look on my all-black Fuji Patrol bike. I'm contemplating adding a PlanetBike set just for good measure, but these also do just fine on their own. If you are buying lights, don't go too cheap, these are perfect. Also they can handle a lot of rain (I live in Eugene, OR w/ 200 days of rain a year).

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Can You See Me Now?, September 8, 2008
By Old Hippie (St. Louis, MO.)
Once again, I should've shopped at Amazon.com first. Oh, well...I made the local bike shop slightly richer. This light set is about $27.00 on Amazon.com. About $10 higher at your local bike shop.

What impressed me first is two words you never hear anymore...BATTERIES INCLUDED! Alkaline batteries at that. The headlight naturally mounts on the handlebars & the the tail-light can be mounted on the seat-post, or comes with a belt clip; great for night-time joggers. (You won't find me jogging with my weak back & legs.) Another plus...no tools required for installation.

The headlight can either shine continuously or flashing. The rear has three choices; continuous, flashing, or random flashing. Both use three LED lights. Battery life, according to specs, should be about 150 hours flashing and 80 continuous. The front headlight takes two AA batteries; the rear two AAA batteries. Once again...alkaline batteries are included. Both lights can be removed easily to prevent theft. One click of a button turns them on. Another click puts them into flash mode. Hold the button down about 2 seconds to turn them off.

Would I use these on a dark country road? Nope. But under city lights, you & your bike become much more visible; especially with the rear light in a flashing mode. I shouldn't have to say this...but I will; this product is designed for adult use. Please don't let your kids ride after dark.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Too fragile?, July 25, 2009
By Reed Maxson
I have owned this light set for about three months and am not quite as happy with the product as most of the other reviewers here. In fact, I decided to buy this product primarily because of the many positive reviews. The LEDs are bright and certainly will help make riders more visible, especially when the lights are used in their flashing beacon modes. However, the headlight provides only marginal lighting for unlit roads or trails, as mentioned by others. My main complaint is that the lens and one battery fell off of the rear light when I hit small depression on a paved street. More recently the lens, LED lights and circuitry fell off of the front light when jarred by a not too severe bump. The wire leads from the battery compartment are very small and fragile, so the weight of the LED lights, which are mounted on the circuit board, was enough to break the wires from their solder joints. After some searching I found the parts that fell off, but the wires are very small and will be difficult to reattach to the circuit board, if even possible. The LEDs might not work now anyhow due to possible damage from falling off the housing and hitting the road. I thought it was a pretty nice light set at first, but now I'm not so sure. If I have to replace the headlight I will do so with a different product or perhaps make something of my own design.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Bright, and durable!, September 16, 2008
By sl8763 (CT)
Both lights will fit easily into your pocket, but still put off a good amount of light. For the price, I couldn't be happier with the headlight - I angle it down slightly to avoid blinding people, and it does a good job of showing me the road ahead. Both the headlight and tail light can be seen from all angles which is great for safety.

They seem to be pretty durable, too - my bike fell over in a gust of wind, with both lights attached. The battery cover and battery flew off the headlight but there were no cracks, and the light still works perfectly.

Batteries included, too! Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  exactly for my needs, May 20, 2008
By Vlad
This pair of lights has nice design (the fact it is pair gives both lights matching look) and both work very well for normal bike commuting or non-heavy riding through woods. The only minor hassle was part of getting them mounted - had to spend couple of minutes polishing the sharp edges of the plastic holder (after cutting them). After that it is possible to remove them via single movement/click. The front light has 2 modes of operation (solid/blinking), the tail one has 3 (solid/blinking/disco).

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great bike lights for commuting, November 13, 2009
By space traveling sissy (Portland, or USA)
These are great lights for commuters. They're really for visibility - don't plan to use the head light to illuminate the road in front of you. But, I think they really help with visibility - I can see the light flashing on reflective signs and such pretty far away.

One small complaint about the headlight is that the light flashes upward as well as forward. So, if you plan to affix this to your handlebars, you should note that you'll see the flashing light too. I find this a little distracting and may put a piece of duct tape across the top, to dim it.

Other than that, it's a great set.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  When weight matters..., September 10, 2009
By Amanda (Sacramento, CA United States)
I purchased this set for myself and Cateye HL-350 and LD170 Bicycle Headlight and Tail Light Combination for my son's bike. Let's just say I should have purchased two of these sets instead.

Mounting:
The mounting clips are very slick - very adjustable and clamp down tight. There are several mounting options, which should make it adaptable for any situation. I used the bar mount for the front and the clothing clip looped through the loop on my Topeak Survival Tool Wedge Pack with Fixer on the back.

Headlight:
The headlight is very small (like the size of 1 cereal bar) but bright enough for city use (too small and lightweight I would think for nighttime trail riding). My one qualm with it is that the battery cover comes off with a coin or flat blade and does not feel like it fits very securely. On my set up, the low profile does result in some of the light being lost as it hits the cables. You need to hold the button to turn it off, which bugs me - I would have rather had a straight on/off without the blinking option.

Tail light:
I am less enthused about the tail light. It is large. It slides into the different mounting options, which means I have it slid into the clothing clip mount, which is slid onto my wedge pack. The other tail lights I have used, use the clothing clip as the default clip and can be adapted for stay mounts if necessary. It would not attach to the mount point on my older Topeak rear rack without the use of cable ties, so if you have a rear rack AND a wedge pack, mounting could be a problem if one does not accept either a post mount or clip mount and you want a easy on/off solution. It is adequately bright and the battery cover is easy enough to remove although like the light, seems insecure with no rubber insulation ring to keep moisture out.

Bottom line: It is a perfect commuting companion for city use and appears to meet legal requirements. It works adequately even on streets that are poorly lit by street lamps, but does not light a wide enough path to be great for trail riding or situations where there are no other sources of light (houses, street lights, etc...). I have no purchasing regrets.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Very Nice, April 9, 2009
By Chad Cowser (College Station, TX)
This headlight and tail light combo is definitely worth a buy. Both lights are very bright and provide more than enough light for cars to see you at night. Another nice feature is that they are easily removable, the bracket stays on the bike while the lights clip on and off the bracket. This is nice because you can take your lights with you when you park your bike to prevent them from being stolen. And lastly, both come with batteries included!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  good for the price, September 11, 2009
By J. Fleminger (NY)
I looked at few options and decided on these based on reviews and that they are not the cheapest or most expensive lights. install was very easy and they haven't slipped or moved around. my only complaint is the battery cover on the headlight gets dislodged too easily. i have to pick up my bike to carry it up stairs and if my hand knocks into it the cover will open up. not a big deal but i keep checking to make sure its staying closed.
i would recommend these to anyone needing to be more visible at night.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Headlight is amazingly bright and tail light does the job!, August 24, 2009
By Orznv (Long Beach, CA)
PROS:
- The headlight is very bright.
- Two light modes: a blinking mode and a constant light (like a flashlight) for unlit paths or a part of your bike that you need to readjust at night.
- The straps have a knob used to tighten or loosen like a belt and doesn't take much time to put it on or take off.
- Both headlight and taillight straps have a button that you can press to take off the lights, avoiding the hassle of removing the straps if you just want to use the lights for other purposes
- The taillights have three light modes. A constant light and two blinking modes.
- Dropped the headlight and taillight a couple times. Still works.

CONS:
- Having to pay for it :P

Update: December 15, 2010
They still work fine!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice Set, July 25, 2009
By N. Petrie (Chicago, IL)
Any headlight you get for under 300 dollars will not adequately light the road. This set is great for riding in the City at night, or any location where the cars need to see you, so you dont get squashed. Id recommend this set it is about twice the price in most bike shops. Kind of cheap feel, but it should not take much of a beating where its at. Also kind of annoying that you have to hold down the button to turn it on or off.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Bang for the buck!, September 20, 2010
By Anonymous (Los Angeles, California)
In my search for a bike light, I was primarily concerned with the strength of the light. However, my girlfriend mentioned her friend's complaints about failed mounting systems and made me rethink my prior conern. In the end this light set fit the bill. If you are familiar with Cateye's mounting bracket from their bike CPU then this is no different it is one of the most secure and user friendly mounting systems out there.

Now onto the lights themselves, you need to ask yourself what kind of riding you will be doing. Night time commuting or trails. For your basic ride to the store and back this is perfect, for trails you will want something stronger. The light throw is strong and bright, but it is a beam and does not spread the spectrum of light very wide. An estimated diameter of the beam approximately 5-6 feet away is about 30 inches. Not bad but if you want to see more then that this is not for you. Otherwise, this is a solid performer with no complaints for the price.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Headlight is very weak., August 19, 2011
By Stephan (Milpitas, CA United States)
This set is good for the price but I found the headlight to be a little too weak. Oncoming traffic will see you but it does not do a great job with lighting up the path in front of you, especially when cycling it higher speeds. The tail light works really well and mounts securely to the bike frame. I will keep the tail light but will have to find another head light so I can ride at night and be able to see the path ahead of me.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  flimsy, August 16, 2011
By leptogenesis (Pittsburgh, PA USA)
I thought these lights were great when I bought them--bright light, easy to install, etc., as every other review has pointed out. (Ok, I felt a little bit stupid waiting three seconds every time I needed to turn them off, and I find it a bit wasteful that the front and rear lights take *different kinds* of disposable batteries, even though hardly anything uses disposables anymore. But these issues aren't serious)

After a year and a month of ownership, though, I've experienced enough serious issues I need to replace them.

1) I leave my bike outside almost daily, and take the lights with me so they don't get stolen. After five months of this, the plastic tab underneath the front light, which is supposed to hold the light in place, broke off. Ever since then it's stayed in place purely on friction; there have been a few awkward incidents where it fell off while riding.

2) More recently I left my bike in storage for two months; it was in a dark basement, so there's no way I wouldn't have noticed that the light was on. Nevertheless, I came back and the batteries for the front light were dead. Apparently these lights drain the batteries even when they're off.

3) A few days ago, the button on the rear light jammed somehow, and so I can't turn it on at all. As far as I can tell, there's no way to disassemble the light to fix the button.

If I spend $30 on a pair of lights, I expect them to last longer than a year. I will not be replacing these lights with another Cateye.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  I really like them, May 11, 2011
By P. Nails (Los Angeles, CA)
I was glad I went with the reviews. I got this combo and it works well at night for my bike. The setup was a breeze, the lights are bright, and they have several blinking modes that I can choose from. To turn the lights off, you just have to press and hold the button for about 2 seconds and they will switch off. Press it once and it will blink, press it again and it will blink in a different mode, press and hold will turn them off. They headlight is not super super bright, but it serves the purpose of getting attention from other people when I'm biking at night. They're easy to mount on and take off. Batteries included. Worth the price!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great product!, February 8, 2011
By epsilon8998
This thing is great! It's super bright and lights up the way rather well for a light its size even in complete darkness. It can even be detached and used as a flashlight! The mounting attachments are also easy to install and can fit multiple different rod sizes, and they seem to be strong enough to resist getting loosened from josteling around. Lights are easy to put on and remove so you can take them with you wherever you go and not have to risk having them stolen. The lights themselves do seem a bit fragile though, and it's easy to accidentally turn them on if you put them in your bag or pocket, thus draining the battery and/or breaking them. So just be careful. Otherwise, great bicycle lights!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  gets the job done, March 23, 2010
By Khamir (Bombay, India)
used these lights a few times on my mtb during city rides with bad roads. while i remain nervous about these lights popping off the bike it still hasn't happened. it's been easy to set up on the bike, the clips r also easy to operate, sufficiently bright and i hope the battery life is good coz i've just started using these.
one serious downside was when i first got these lights i was unable to open it to see how to install the batteries. was afraid i might break the whole thing. of course, once i figured it out it turned out to be fairly simple to open and shut the lid on these.
what remains difficult is to actually see the battery itself. the fact that these light up means the batteries r installed but i continue to struggle in recognizing the battery itself..maybe that's just me.
so far so good with these i guess.

These lights are super bright (I use them for flash mode to be seen...and quite well!!!). They are quick to take off of the mounts (the mounts were super easy to put on as well) and click back on easily too. I def recommend these for someone who also rides in the city and wants to be seen by traffic, etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Solid Light Set, February 14, 2010
By Austin R. Marshall
These are some of the best commuter lights I use. They are simple. I am a student, and efficiency and safety are key. I keep the lights in my backpack, and when the time come to commute home, I just throw these in the very well designed handle bar mounts. Depending on your legs and seat post, the rear light can hit your hamstring every time you pedal. I took it off since it's not required by law.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Very good for the price and size, though headlight could be brighter, January 7, 2010
By Justin (Washington, DC)
Overall, these are very good value for the money and small size. In particular, the headlight is very small.

Not suprisingly, given the size, if you want a headlight that illuminates the path in front of you in complete darkness, buy a different headlight. Otherwise, the mounting hardware is good, the buttons work well, and I haven't used these for long but they seem to be holding up well.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great performance for little cost and light weight., November 20, 2009
By J. Snider (Richmond, VA USA)
I can't compare this to any other headlight/taillight system, as it's the only one I've used. I ride at night, and it easily illuminates road signs and obstacles. The taillight can be set to steady on, blink, or "random". I leave mine in blink mode which I feel is the most visible. The headlight can be steady or blink, and I leave it in steady mode as I need it as much for seeing my way as making me visible to motorists. The total weight of the package is very light -- at least compared to the rest of my gear. I'm not racing here and I'm not counting grams, so I was pleasantly surprised by how little the whole setup weighs.

I don't hesitate to recommend this package to anyone who rides after dark.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  For the Money, Can't Beat It!, November 4, 2009
By B. Raposa (Tampa, FL USA)
These lights are light (weight-wise -- no pun intended), a cinch to mount, and work quite well. I feel much safer riding at dawn and dusk with these two drawing attention to me from the front and rear. If you have never purchased anything from Cateye, once you see any of their products, you will realize the quality this company provides. These lights are no different.
For night riding, the headlight is acceptable, but it lights such a small area it makes it difficult to see what is heading your way. Within the limits of the beam, the light is bright and pure; it just doesn't provide much peripheral illumination. (Think spotlight)
Bottom line: for the money, you can't beat this combo.

Yes, Are you tired of those old fashion bike attachments that maybe worked sometime or ended up rusted. What about those bike generators and tail light kits that made a lot of noise and never worked well. This is the future. This light and tail light is so simple , lightweight, performs well, has computerized memory for different settings. Also, easy to install, and looks good too. And yes no rusty metal parts. Don't forget this is not a car headlamp, so if you need that type of power you may need a least two , to see the road ahead on a very dark road. I say hooray for the future.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Not water resistant, December 16, 2009
By cgwhites (Raleigh, NC)
I bought this product based on reviews. But the headlight is not very water resistant. No rubber seal, and water can easily get on the electronics in rain. It may continue to function in the rain, but I'd rather not get the inside of it wet. Could have been sealed better. The tailight does have a rubber seal and is built a little better.

Headlight is not that bright, but is compact and lite. I picked up a 12 LED light at Biglots for $5. I will be using this as my headlight, in addition to or in place of this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  I wish I'd shopped a little harder, September 4, 2011
By Editor (California)
I'm usually pretty good at finding the best bargains here at Amazon; sometimes, that takes a lot of looking. I wanted this light combo, but I bought the Velo 5 computer as well. After I had purchased them separately, I found this combo for less money: [...] (Cateye HL-EL135/TL-LD130/VEL05 Headlight, Rear Light and Bicycle Computer Combo Pack).

Regardless, the headlight and the taillight displayed here work well, and the installation mounts were easy to figure out. Once the mounts are installed, you can remove your lights easily to prevent pilferage.

The headlight:

As some have reported here, the quality of the light that this thing produces is blue, nearly ultra-violet. However, I believe it is close enough to being white to satisfy the laws of most regions/states.

In well-lit urban areas, the quantity of light that this thing produces is enough to keep me feeling safe from speeding automobiles, but the light is quite dim when compared to city street lights. However, last night I ventured down some unlit alleys and found that this light will do in a pinch to help me find my way unassisted by any external light source. Nevertheless, if you plan to do a lot of riding away from city lights, I'd suggest that you buy a much brighter headlight than this one.

The operation is simple: Push the button once and the light comes on in either steady-headlight or strobe mode. Another quick push of the button toggles between those modes. A longer push of the button turns the light off, leaving it to default to the last-used mode. In other words, if you shut it down in strobe mode, when you turn it back on, it begins in strobe mode.

The taillight:

It is well designed and meets the limits required by the law here. It is bright enough, and with the push of a button, I can set one of three modes: steady, blinking, and a sequential set up. A longer push of the button turns it off.

One reviewer here said, because this mounts to the seat stem and because seat stems are seldom perfectly vertical, that this ends up pointing at the road directly behind the bicycle, instead of at a point some three-hundred feet behind the bike. That is not true at all. The ingenious mount is made so that it can be adjusted to any angle... easily.

I bought this set up so I can ride legally and safely at night. It works very well for that purpose, and installation was not only easy, but actually fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Hi, I'm a bike in the dark!, August 31, 2011
By MadMaddie
You get two lights in this set - not to bad! Comes with batteries (yays!) and both lights are very easy to secure on any type of bike.

The red light (for the back) also has a clip on it if you happen to have a pack on the back of your bike under the seat. I do, so, it was nice I could clip the light to the pack. If you couldn't, the light would be useless.

Nice safety set. Get it.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Very Bright, August 30, 2011

I was very impressed by how bright these lights were. They can be used when biking in complete darkness as well as simply making you more visible to cars.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good Lights for the Money, January 5, 2012
By Mr. Eclectic (California)
I bought this combo set for myself about 4 months ago, now I'm getting another set for my wife. For the medium/low light areas that we ride in these lights are perfect. And being a very frugal person I'm happy with the price compared to some other lights out there.

After several months of almost daily use:

~PROS~
- The batteries lasted a very long time, even on constant shine I've replaced the front light batteries only once.
- I still haven't had to replace the rear batteries.
- The mounts work well and don't slip.
- The light is bright, even in very low light like when going through tunnels on my bike trail it illuminates the entire tunnel with ease, up to about 25 ft ahead.

~CON~
- I do have one small complaint about the head lamp; it needs a cover over the top side of the clear light reflector, I say this because when you're riding, the light shines forward and out to the sides very well, but it also shines upward into your peripheral vision, creating glare. Luckily I was able to find a simple solution for this...A piece of dark colored tape works just fine, but because of this one small draw back I gave it four stars instead of five.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  This light combo is the bee's knees!, October 29, 2011
By Scarabgirl
I had searched a lot of sites looking for a bike light combo set that would be perfect for my son's bike. I finally found it at Amazon. The size is perfect, the emission of light is excellent, it was super easy to install, and let's not forget about the price. No other place could come close to matching, let alone, beating the price. Now we're both happy!

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Fell Apart, October 16, 2011

Lasted about a year, then they fell apart. Might have been some rain storms or whatnot, but definitely flimsy.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  I really like them, May 11, 2011
By N. Vo (Los Angeles, CA)
