3.0 out of 5 stars.  Time to switch brands..., October 2, 2009
By Peetzaa (NY, NY)
So...I have been purchasing these socks for over 3 years and generally find them to be a good product. They are comfortable, do not fall apart and tend to not fade quickly. All very desirable qualities in a black sock.

HOWEVER...the one criticism I have and nagging problem (which surprisingly is not mentioned in other reviews) is that these socks kick off a tremendous amount of lint. Every day when I take my socks off my feet are covered with lint from these socks which inevitably gets everywhere. Repeated washing of the socks does not resolve this problem either. If you are not diligent about vacuuming or washing your feet immediately after taking off your socks the lint gets all over the floor and gets pounded into the carpet (which is a nightmare to get out). After all this time I simply do not have the patience to keep up with the lint all over my carpet and on my feet.

So despite the low price point, good quality and high level of comfort I have to move on from these socks to a product that does not create such a problem.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  all right by me !!!, December 5, 2007
By Matthew G. Sherwin (last seen screaming at Amazon customer service)
These Classic Men's Cushion Crew Socks by Hanes are very well made and they keep your feet warm. I recently started to wear these when it's cold at night and I want to sleep with socks on my feet. These crew socks can be worn for athletic activities but they're probably more suited for everyday routine wear.

These crew length socks have a reinforced heel and toe; this makes them last longer and they still feel very comfortable on my feet. The socks only come in black or grey; and that is a disappointment. However, these are relatively affordable yet good quality socks if you need black socks for work or any other occasion.

I would not dry these socks at high temperatures. High temperature drying would probably result in the socks becoming too loose on your feet. Eventually the fabric could loosen so much that the socks will "bunch up" almost as low as your ankles when you wear them--and that's very uncomfortable. Dry these socks at a lower temperature. Then they will remain just as comfortable as ever. I know mine do!

Overall, you can't go wrong buying these socks. They keep your feet extra warm during colder weather. They are manufactured so well that you definitely get more than your money's worth. Not bad at all!

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Terrible socks, March 1, 2010
By Rob Banzai (Los Angeles, CA)
I was used to Hanes black crew socks being a bit flimsy in the past but my most recent purchase have holes in them after just three washings. They produce so much fuzz that even though I wash them inside out at the end of the day my feet look like they belong on a hobbit or gorilla. Like their white socks the quality has dropped markedly over the last ten years but while the white socks are still worth purchasing these black socks are awful.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  I buy socks online, and that is why girls don't talk to me, December 16, 2010
By Jerry A (Los Angeles, CA)
The question you must ask yourself is who is more of a looser? You for actually reading reviews of socks online, or me for doing the same, ordering them, and then writing a product review of said socks. The answer is both of us.

I bought socks online, as for some reason I convinced myself that I was saving time by doing so. They arrived a couple of days later, and I put them through the 8 hour work test the next day. The saddest part of this story is that they are amazing socks. They are comfortable and plush, without being too tight around my plus sized ankle. After one day of wearing these socks, I noticed less fatigue when I arrived home. With all the talk of orthopedics and proper arches, we often do not consider that sock comfort is shockingly important in our day to day busy lives. These hold up wonderfully. I have been wearing and washing them for weeks now, with no sign of wear or degrade, and they still remain incredibly comfortable.

I am slightly sickened to give socks a 5 star review, but Haynes has earned it. You will not regret this purchase, though the psychological impact of feeling sad and alone after receiving your socks in the mail takes months to fully ware off.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  A comfortable, affordable grey sock, April 6, 2008
By Ms. Swifty (Santa Fe, NM United States)
This is my husband's favorite sock. The grey color looks good with sandals and hides the dirt when tromping through air shows or other outdoor activities. Grey is also better with dark-colored boots, where the color tends to rub off and stain white socks.
These mid-weight socks provide decent cushioning without being too bulky. They're a comfortable fit for his size 8 feet (according to the package, the "size 6-12" refers to shoe size). Amazon also has them in white; search for "Hanes classic sock".
They're not especially long-lived; a 6-pack lasts about 6 months. They usually wear through at the Achilles tendon; don't know if that is due my husband's foot/shoes, or to the sock. I wash them on "heavy duty" and dry them on high, so that probably shortens their life! Regardless, they're comfortable, affordable, and he wears them nearly every day.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Hanes switched from 100% cotton socks to spandex mix, February 10, 2011
By Double Dizzle fo Shizzle (Arizona)
As others have stated, these socks have downgraded in my book. These used to be 100% cotton, however, now they are a spandex and cotton mix that leaves a horrible amount of lint on your feet...and everywhere else after taking them off. Also, since moving to the spandex mix, the socks get your feet much too hot much too quick.

As over simplified as it is, Hanes classic black socks one ruled and now, they have changed the product and made them vastly inferior.
The new socks have hit the trash, the old 100% cotton socks are still in good shape in the drawer. My quest is now finding 100% cotton casual black crew socks to replace Hanes' bad replacement they offered us.

Good luck in your search!

1.0 out of 5 stars.  They ruined a good thing, June 8, 2010
By a consumer
I have worn Hanes socks for many years, and they have been affordable and comfortable.
BUT NOT ANYMORE. They have changed (read, made cheaper) by incorporating plastic. These socks are very uncomfortable.
And they do not fit size size 6 to 12 as advertised. More like size 6 to 7.
I gave them to my wife to try, who wears size 8, and they barely fitted her.
If it says "spandex" beware!
Icing on the cake: they came in a bag that boasted it was "resealable"... maybe to assist in returns??

For some reason it is suddenly hard to find 100% cotton socks.
Anyway, message to Hanes - you ruined a good thing, and lost a customer.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Lint balls STILL litter my floors even after 3 months of use, May 7, 2011
By Daniel
I bought these socks 3 months ago. I noticed that they shed lint balls constantly. I hoped that after a few washes, they would stop shedding. I believe Fruit of the Loom and Hanes may procure and rebrand these socks at the same factory overseas because I had the same problem with both brands.

Very low quality product and not worth picking up lint balls for several months. I'm going back to Gold Toe, I didn't have any issues with that brand.

My guess is that Hanes and Fruit of the Loom are probably aware of the issue and have already switched suppliers but may still want to first deplete their existing stock before rolling out product from their new supplier. or maybe they don't really have a very good quality control system in place and aren't even aware of the issue. Either way, stay away from these socks unless you want to constantly pick up lint balls from your floors and bed.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Flaky socks..., April 21, 2011
By Van
I generally wear black men's dress socks, usually thin, always cotton. These socks are fairly thick and may be too warm in the summer. They do have the unusual characteristic of shedding small black tufts onto my feet. These tufts show up on the bed sheets and on the bathmat. I've never had socks with that "feature" before.
I followed the advice of another reviewer, who suggested turning them inside out and washing them before first wearing. They still shed. They are comfortable and seem to hold their shape so far. I will continue to wear them, since I'm too cheap to throw them away and buy others. But I would not buy them again.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Holier than most, October 14, 2010
By Krigsmakten (Atlanta, GA)
Finding good (durable) black socks is difficult - these are no good - lint all over, and holes in the heel area after only a few times. They disintegrate practically before your eyes. Stay away from them.

I just sprung for six pairs of Greenyarn socks which are amazingly well-made - but only available in two-tone unfortunately - so my quest for QUALITY solid black socks continues.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Absolutely unacceptable!, February 23, 2010
By Niles, King of the Ninnies
I have always liked these socks. For some reason, these black socks are weaker than white socks. (I assume it is because white socks are more "athletic." It shouldn't matter.) I bought three packs, and after wearing them 1-5 times they started to have holes in the heels. I wear black socks a lot more than white socks, so one star isn't even low enough to express my disappointment (no wait...anger) at this company for the very steep decline in quality. I might expect such a low quality sock from China, but not America.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Lousy quality: heels wear out way too fast, May 1, 2011
By Misha (New York, NY)
I purchased these socks several months ago, and already at least half of them have holes in the heels. I have other brands of socks that have lasted literally years longer than these.

It's not like I'm some great athlete or anything either: These socks just gave out with very little wear.

I would definitely not recommend these socks to anyone, unless they want to polish their darning skills.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good socks and a fix for Lint, February 10, 2011
By Dolf Carg (St Louis, MO)
Soft, stretchable socks. As other reviews have said, the inside of the sock has A LOT of lint! But after weeks of just dealing with it I took action and washed the socks inside out. This has cured my lint problem.

I've had these socks for a couple months now and they are holding their color and stretchability very well.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  These socks are no longer 100% cotton!, December 14, 2010
By Goldengate (San Francisco, where else?)
I've been ordering these socks for a couple of years from Amazon. They've been good everyday 100% cotton socks. The shipment that arrived just a few days ago was NOT 100% cotton and was in fact almost a 50% synthetic blend. I'm sure this is due to the fact that cotton has gone from 65 cents a pound to more than $1.00 a pound in the last few months so they are trying to cut costs. However the product description still says 100% cotton and the product is NOT. I guess one benefit of the synthetic blend is they will hold their color longer. I thought it was funny that there was a sticker on the package that said something like "new eco fiber." Since when is polyester, which is made from oil, an eco fiber? I mean, these things aren't made of hemp!

So if you like 100% cotton socks, these are not the socks for you anymore.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Fuzzy Socks that get the job done, December 2, 2010
By LokiDucks (Bensalem, PA USA)
I bought these socks for two reasons: 1) I didn't have any crew-length socks for the winter time, and 2) they were fairly cheap and available with Prime shipping.

While these socks are getting the job done of keeping my ankles warm from wintery updrafts, they do so while being pretty uncomfortable. The inside of the sock is terribly rough. And, if these are indeed cushioned socks, it makes me wonder what the uncushioned variety is like. And all the other reviewers aren't kidding when they talk about fuzz. I'm willing to bet that I could fashion an entire pair of socks from the fuzz that comes out of these.

Normally, I'm an avid buyer of Gold Toe socks, and in the future, I'll be sure to put up the extra money to spring for those socks.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Holes, Holes Everywhere! Quoth the Raven Nevermore!, October 16, 2010
By Claus DuBois
No durability. Lucky to get 4 or 5 single-day wearings before the holes start. They are so cheaply made that you can actually tell where the holes will develope by examining them right out of the pack. It's like they intentionally break a few thread connections in random locations on every sock during the maufacturing process so that the socks are done in as little as 4 wearings. I think Hanes and the rest of the sockmakers have developed their own version of the Gillette razor blade strategy. They set a price point just low enough to entice you to buy their socks and its only later after you've gone through 20 pair that the buyer realizes they actually would have been better off paying $50 for a single decent pair that actually lasted for a long time. I've got several huge bags of these Hanes and similar socks where I accumulate them once they develope the holes. I figured I keep them and use them for miscellaneous cleaning, but holy crap......I could now wash all the windows in my house every day for the next year and still holey socks left to spare!

OK I bought them and they fit, but it could have been labeled a little more clearly. They're pretty good for the money, a few of them have holes in them now after a year, but you get what you pay for.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Yes, there is lint, March 18, 2011
By Sondre Skarsten
Being a lazy university student, perhaps i do not see the real drama involved in Lint, whenever i take these socks off after a day of use my feet do have a not insignificant amount of lint on them, however i have never thought about it twice, and generally shower in the evening anyways.

In every other respect they are... well socks, there is a reason socks are used as the standard "oh thanks auntie, you got me socks for Xmas", they are not exciting, but they are everything i could wish for from socks.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Almost exactly what I was looking for..., December 8, 2011
By James Cole
So these are your standard black Hanes sock... I already had a set of 6 and loved them, so I bought some more!
Unfortunately for me, Hanes started printing a little "Hanes" near the toes between my purchase of my existing socks and these new ones so they don't match exactly... I usually just throw my socks all in the drawer without matching them up and just buy a bunch of identical ones, but now I have to look closer when pulling out two socks in the morning... Oh well..

I love these black socks a lot more than black dress socks, no slipping down to my ankle like a lot of socks I've had; they're exactly what you'd want in a sock, though as the other commenters have said, a little black fuzzy problem at first, though the new socks have less of a problem than my existing Hanes black socks, maybe they changed something when they started printing "Hanes" on the toe :).

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Holes?!, April 20, 2012
By Zbear101 (Utah, USA)
I've gotten Hanes crew socks before and they lasted quite a while and eventually would get holes in the toes, last ones I bought lasted a year or so.

So I was surprised when, literally, after the first wearing, some of these socks had holes in the toes already. Upon second wearing, pretty much all of them have a small hole in the toe. And not because my toenails aren't cut or anything; this has never happened to me.

I usually love these socks and was impressed with the price and so ordered them. Now almost all of them, just a few short weeks later, have holes in them (and I cannot stand holes).

Ordering Gold Toes now, for a little more, but hopefully they last longer than a few weeks...

2.0 out of 5 stars.  SIZING IS MISLEADING, March 31, 2012
By PRICE7204
These are nice socks and I have no problems with the quality of the items. They are advertised to fit mens sizes 6 through 12. I wear a mens size 10.5 shoe and cannot get them over my feet. I ordered 2 of the 6-packs of these socks and would have returned them but my wife thought they would fit her (womens size 6-7) so they are now in her drawer. She later stated that they were pretty tight on her too. She is planning on giving them to a grandchild.

NOTE:
I have purchased Hanes products for many years and have never had any problem or complaint until now, and will continue to buy Hanes products in the future!

I bought the grey socks so this may not apply to the black and white socks, the reviews seem to indicate this. They're very comfortable and fit very well. Lint was an issue, not as bad as other reviewers made it seem, but still present. After an inside-out wash it became a non-issue.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Worst Online Shopping Experience, May 6, 2010
By Mei Liu
This Hanes product is the worst product I have bought online. I trust Hanes and thought they have good quality products, so I bought the socks online through Amazon. I was totally surprised and disappointed when I received the product. The product information online says the product is made of 78% cotton, 17% polyester, 5% other fiber. The actual socks feel like 100% poor quality polyester. I don't think I will ever want to buy Hanes product online or even any clothing related product online.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  My daily sock of choice now, January 24, 2010
By Steve (Issaquah, WA, United States)
Great fit, very comfortable, and stay where you put them. They fill that niche between thin dress socks for dress shoes, and wool cushion socks for boots. The cotton breathes and wicks quite well, and the cushion sole is right where it should be. They don't bunch up around my toes, the heel stays where it should, and the tops don't fall down.

If I'm not wearing wool or wool-blend socks with boots, these Hanes socks are on my feet every day. Great value for great socks.

I bought the socks about two months ago, and was quite pleased with how they felt. I go through socks quickly and generally they wear out at the balls of my feet first. 1.0 out of 5 stars.  These socks make my feet look like they grew whiskers, December 25, 2011
By Razz (Virginia)
No kidding ...., when I take these socks off after a day of wear, there is so much sock lint on my feet that it looks like my feet grew whiskers over the course of the day. Better be close to your shower when you take these bad boys off because as another reviewer noted, the lint gets in your carpet fibers.

THESE SOCKS AREN'T WORTH THE LINT HASSLES THEY CREATE. And yes, they are comfortable, so the lint issue is a shame.

I order this socks for my husband to take on a cruise. He wants me to order more. They are comfortable and keep their shape and cushion after washing.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good work socks, December 2, 2011
By Guges
I am often on my feet at work for as much as 12 hours, and these are great socks for summer and winter wear. Glad I found a sock that was just the right thickness and comfortable to wear all day!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  I <3 socks, November 9, 2011

I actually really like these socks as corny as it sounds. They seem to fit well, and they are soft. Price was amazing

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good Quality at a Great Price, October 3, 2011
By W. D. Love (Athens, GA)
In the past, I've always preferred Gold Toe Men's Fluffies socks, but they have gotten so expensive that I decided to try Hanes Classic Cushion Crew Socks as an alternative. I found the Hanes socks to be quite comfortable, though not quite as comfortable and stretchy as the Gold Toe socks. They are also a little shorter than Gold Toe socks, and a little thicker. (The extra thickness may make them better for winter wear.) The only thing that I don't like about the Hanes socks is that they tend to leave lint between my toes, at least upon the first wearing. (This is especially noticeable with the black socks.) Still, the Hanes socks are much less expensive than Gold Toe, and I will likely buy them again in the future. My only reservation is that I haven't worn them enough yet to know how durable they are.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent socks - fit is spot on and nice and thick, August 3, 2011
By Just a guy (Westchester, NY)
These are pretty thick socks from the ankle down, but a bit thinner from the ankle up. The sizing seems to be dead on. I wear a size seven men's shoe and these fit very well. Not too big and not too small.

New socks is something I always forget about - but am always happy to wear.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good Socks, July 23, 2011
By Shane (Charleston, WV, United States)
My husband was looking for a thick black sock for work. His shoes were rubbing his feet raw after ten hours standing. These did the job.

They wash nicely and they are very soft.

My only complaint is that they leave lint EVERYWHERE!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Perfect Socks!, July 8, 2011
By AllthatjazzNJ (West New York, NJ)
These Hanes socks are fantastic. For some reason it's hard finding gray cotton socks in department stores. I can't understand why there isn't a bigger demand for them. They are perfect summer wear, especially with shorts. They aren't so bright as white and go with conservative or sporty attire. And these Hanes socks are very well made!

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Skinny Socks, April 23, 2012
By TDBishop
These socks are smaller than Hanes socks used to be. My husband has EEE width feet, and the socks barely stretch enough to fit his feet. Very disappointing.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice, but they won't last, March 19, 2012
By Not A. Rockstar (United States)
I've developed holes in the heels of more than half of this pack of 6 socks in less then five months. I'm used to socks lasting way longer than that. They were very nice while they lasted, but I do not recommend them.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  TOO MUCH LINT!!!, February 25, 2012
By languiduck (hampton roads, va)
These socks feel nice, fit nice, and they seem to hold up. Unfortunately they also produce an extreme amount of fuzz and lint. I know what you're thinking...just wash them a few times. I'm telling ya that I have kept these around for a few months thinking the same thing. I have worn them many times and washed them both inside out and right side out. They get worse with time, not better. That is what prompted me to spend my time to write this review. This sucks because I'm throwing them out.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Poor durability, January 29, 2012
By Andrew Burstein (California, USA)
These socks are not well made. They seem to shed at a rapid rate, and quickly wear out in the soles. I recommend Wigwam Men's At Work 3-Pack Socks instead. They are more expensive, but worth it because they are much more durable.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Comfortable and soft, January 17, 2012
By Jun
These socks are surprisingly comfortable and soft. Compared to my previous socks, Nike Performance Men's Crew Socks 6 Pack - Shoe Size: 8-12 - White, the elastic on these don't get loose as the day goes on, and stay in place nicely. The only qualm I have with these socks is that after 2 washes I still get lint stuck to the bottom of my feet after wearing these... maybe I should try washing them inside out next time.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  socks, June 28, 2011
By tbrown (New Hampshire)
Very surprised by how heavy these socks are-great for wearing with work boots in the summer and as a liner under heavier socks in winter boots. With that in mind, you can't beat the price!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Finally the right socks, May 23, 2011
By Kawiking
I bought these for my hubby. He has problems with socks not being thick enough in the right spots (like the Achilles) and also being too tight on the ankle. These socks fit the bill.... Not too tight on the ankle, wash well and wear well. He works in boots all day and finds them comfortable and cushioning. The socks don't fade and become flimsy after several washes - which is great too. They are also nice and warm without leaving the foot sweaty. Colours are just right for what he uses them for. Great price - great product- great colours - couldn't be happier - oh yeah I can be happier - super fast postage to Australia!!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Finally some real black socks, May 11, 2011
By Rocker D'Antonio (USA)
I often am wear casual clothes that look better with black socks. Black socks usually fall into the relm of dress clothes and are there for poorly made and uncomfortable while being over prices. These socks are what I've been looking for at the price I've wanted to buy them. I bought 4 packs after I tried the first pack.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Poor quality socks, August 21, 2010
By Amazon-er
These socks are poor quality and after only a few washes get worn away. It might help, though, to wash them inside out. Regardless, I do not recommend these socks. Check out Gold Toe instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  A good basic sock, May 8, 2010
By pmjacobs00 (Stone Mountain Village, GA United States)
Come on, they are socks. They are comfortable, have been holding up to many washings, and do the job. They don't feel cheap like inexpensive socks sometimes can.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good socks, March 22, 2010
By Giorgi (Rustavi, Georgia)
Good socks I ever tried. They are soft and durable. I'm satisfied with quality. True to size, but I think black one is little bit thin than grey, but anyway it's OK. I would suggest this socks to someone else.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Solid, affordable socks, March 15, 2010
By Daniel Glovier (Chicago, Illinois United States)
Unfortunately I have not had them long enough to give feedback on wear, but after a wash they are what they are: socks! Comfy enough for work usage for sure, which is what I'm using them for. And affordable! All told, will purchase again.

It's only 60% cotton. It doesn't say it nowhere in the description. Otherwise they seem they'll last a good amount of time.

I wear them with both casual and dressy ensembles and they look great. The main feature though is their level of comfort. They're soft and thick. No signs of wear so far.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Socks, January 3, 2010
By John M (Cincinnati, OH USA)
They stay up, keep my feet warm, and don't bunch, hold stains, or stretch out. I wore these socks every day during a job working manual labor, and loved them. A great product for the price, and an easy recommendation.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great socks, November 13, 2009
By Craig (Chicago)
I've been using these now for a couple of weeks and they seem to hold up pretty well.

They are comfortable and they don't slide down even when walking long distances.

All in all, good socks for the value, I'd definitely buy more of them.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  good socks for less than size 12 feet, May 19, 2009
By Amanda (NH)
Good socks. Not great socks, but good socks. Although they run a bit small for men. If you wear mens shoe size 12 or better, these will be too small. Otherwise they are, as I said, good socks.
