Product Description:
Malone foam block car top kayak carrier kits & blocks offer an affordable transport system for your kayak. We use high quality EVA closed cell foam. All of our blocks are produced with state of the art computer fabrication to insure total quality. Feel comfortable taking your kayak for a drive next time you use our Standard kayak kit. This affordable transportation option allows you to find the water in one piece, and when you're done for the day, simply put the kit back in the re-usable tote bag.
Sometimes you just need to transport a kayak a small distance--either home from the store or to a close-by river. Enter the Malone standard kayak kit, which includes everything you need to haul a lightweight kayak on occasional short trips.

The kit's pair of 12-inch EVA foam blocks are ideal for short trips.
The kayak kit comes with two universal-fit, 12-inch, non-skid laminate foam blocks to cushion the kayak in place, along with a 15-foot over-hull strap and bow and stern S-hook tie-downs. The blocks are built with V-shaped cutouts, ensuring a great fit for every kayak. The tie-downs, meanwhile, fit to the front and rear of your vehicle. (The kit also works with round, square, or factory oval cross rails.) Finally, the kit comes with a carrying case for easy storage.

Note: Malone recommends that users not put the 12-inch blocks directly on the rooftop, as the concentrated weight of the kayak may dent the roof.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Car top Foam Block Kayak carrier, September 11, 2010
By Elizabeth Hartzell (Larkspur, CA)
I'm frankly disappointed. We've had good days with this and really bad ones. We put the blocks over the factory bars atop our Outback. Position the kayak right side up, tie off the beast with the cinch strap through the back doors, and with the hook/rope to the trailer hitch in back and the only metal available in front, which is to the side of the car, either left or right. I've read every other review and followed each suggestion at least once.

It slips along the bars and the strap makes a deafening noise (even with the loose end inside and it's cinched so tight the kayak deflects a lot). We had to retie it about four times for the last 25 mile drive. Infuriating.

I'm going to try to make a central connection in front by tying off a short rope to both metal parts, so the kayak can tie in the middle, and I may have to resort to duct tape on the bars to keep the blocks from sliding.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Use it for kayak. Use the malone loader to load the kayak first. Must read both reviews if you are buying the same combi, October 27, 2009

Works great. I usually put it directly on the roof top without using the metal rails. However it presses the roof down if you tighten it too much. However my kayak is light and the SUV roof seems to be strong enough. You could install it on the metal rail using the grove but I did not try it since the shape of the grove looked different from my SUV rail.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  save your money!, September 25, 2010
By cristenbee (Colorado)
Wow. You could go any buy 2 adjustable straps, 2 foam blocks, and a length of nylon rope for about $10. Or you could buy it here and only get ONE adjustable strap, all for $30. The noise level from this contraption was so loud I couldn't even hear my radio in the car with the volume turned all the way up. The foam blocks move forward and backwards. This is such a crappy product, I can't believe I bought it. And do not drive with it and the kayak on top of your car if it is windy.....yes, it will move from side to side ALOT!!! In the middle of my road trip around Colorado, I ended up stopping at a hardware store and buying real adjustable straps because the ONE that came with this was useless. Do not waste your money! Really!
