5.0 out of 5 stars.  Love this machine!!! Brother XL3750, March 10, 2008
By wig (ST ALBANS, VT United States)
Its been about 12 years since I have sewed (on a borrowed machine)... I purchased this machine in Feb and it was so easy to set up and use.. I am about halfway done a baby quilt and have really enjoyed sewing again. I think that if the machine hadn't worked so nicely I would have been frustrated. I haven't sewn enough to really know how to fix problems. The instruction manual was easy to follow and at one point when the tension wasn't right, the manual provided me what I needed to fix it.... I have a friend who sews regularly who recommended this to me and I have been exremely happy.....

5.0 out of 5 stars.  A great value for a quality product!, August 25, 2008
By discerning customer (Vienna, VA USA)
The ad said it was lightweight and it is wonderfully so. The quick start guide was easy to follow to get started right away on my projects. It is a diagram-based chart for getting the bobbin and the machine threaded and I breezed through it; however, when I got to the automatic needle threader, I got a bit frustrated figuring out how the mechanicism worked. When I realized I had to look at the needle hole at a left angle and not straight on, I saw how the mechanism worked and it then was so easily to thread the machine I almost cried for joy. I have never had an automatic needle threader before and it is wonderful.

I played with the dials on a piece of scrap fabric for a 10 minutes and then started on my projects. I did some light mending and then finished with sewing heavy outdoor fabric and the machine handled it all beautifully. The reverse stitch button is prominent and easy to push and the machine responds quickly. As an aside, the machine comes with lots of gizmos to do all kinds of special sewing projects (embroidery) and also 4 standard needles. For my outdoor heavy fabric, I need to buy the appropriate needle next time (I broke one of the standard needles) but the machine itself soared right through the tough task I put it through. Swapping the work surface from sleeve fitting to a large table top work surface and back to as it is pictured here is a snap. It comes with a cloth carrying case. I bought a plastic case and that was a waste of money because the cloth case is sufficient for this lightweight sewing machine. I am so pleased with this product. You can have a great sewing machine for a reasonable price and store it quickly and easily. No need for a whole room in your home for sewing!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great little mechanical sewing machine, March 3, 2009
By B. DeMoss (USA)
First off, I bought a Brother XL-2600 10 years ago. I do light sewing--curtains, the occasional skirt or apron, throw pillows, jeans mending, lots of alterations, etc. Haven't had a single problem with it, and can do everything from silk to jeans--basic stuff only, though. I took it in for routine cleaning, which I've never done once, and it's taking the repair shop a long time to get to it, so I wanted a value-priced machine to back up my old machine in the meantime. I found the XL-3750 after doing a lot of research and seriously considering the Kenmore 58-stitch, which also gets good reviews.

The first XL-3750 I got from Amazon had a broken top-thread tension setting--didn't work no matter what I did. I sent that one back (FREE RETURNS, FOLKS!), and in 2 days got a second XL-3750 (they send a replacement right away, pending your return). Setup took less than 5 minutes, and I was sewing that night.

This machine does a lot for a non-computerized machine, and can handle most any fabric. I've even tried some knit sewing on it, and it works. I don't even have to use an ugly zigzag stitch to do knits on it b/c it has some stretch-fabric stitches. (...or you can just go with a straight stitch.)

I am very pleased with this machine, although I haven't had it long and might be favorably prejudiced toward it by the quality of my old Brother.

This machine is a great value for the novice or intermediate sewist.

Good features:
--drop-in bobbin
--needle threader: what an invention!
--comes with lots of foot attachments you'd normally pay a lot for (including quilting bar and rolling foot)
--machine cover included
--lots of utility and decorative stitches for the price
--quick setup
--one-step buttonhole maker
--terrific value
--relatively quiet (compared to older machines)
--snap-on feet
--pedal responds well to pressure changes, making speed easy to adjust

Good Amazon features:
--free returns
--quick shipping of replacement item

NOTE: I am an Amazon Prime member. Don't know if that makes a difference with the shipping and returns.

No complaints thus far. I will update the review if I end up having any.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Would be great if it wasn't completely useless!, June 13, 2009
By nonfiction unwriter (California)
This machine had all the features I was looking for right now, but the foot pedal has only one speed setting: light speed. Which would be fine if the person doing the sewing was a robot with Matrix-like faster-than-light reflexes, or if they could slow down time or something. As is, the machine is completely useless. The slightest amount of pressure on the pedal makes the fabric shoot out so fast that it immediately gets bunched up and it is impossible to keep it straight or see what it's doing. Other problems with this machine include: upper thread tension wheel doesn't seem to do anything at all (something another reviewer pointed out as well!), and on my machine the tension is permanently too tight. This machine is priced so well that it's tempting, but not if it's just going to be a paper weight taking up space in a corner somewhere because it doesn't work. I'm very disappointed. And with having to pay the shipping to Brother and back even though I've only had it for 2 weeks, it is not worth it. Not to mention they would probably just put one of the same faulty foot pedals on it (maybe these defects are why these machines are on sale at every single website I see them on). It's painful to return this because I was really looking forward to using it, and I have all my fabric cut and ready to sew a dress right now. GRRRRrrrr!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Easy fix for Tension Adjustment Problems, September 28, 2010
By kh (Seattle,WA)
I too was having problems with the lower thread looping and issues with tension adjustment. I found this solution looking at a review for the Brother XL2600I with the title "How to Stop Lower thread looping". Followed the suggestions, and the issue was COMPLETELY resolved in under a minute. Here is the post from SBP Ladorada : "Finally I figured out how to fix it. (tension issue) Refer to the owner's manual section on inserting the bobbin for photos. What you want to do is drop in the bobbin, and pull the thread through the little slit like it says. But, you have to make sure that the thread goes into the slot in the "tension-adjusting spring" (this is hard to see; pull up the plastic tongue that forms the slit a little with your fingernail to see where it is), although it should go in by itself, then YOU HAVE TO HOLD THE BOBBIN SO IT DOESN'T MOVE AND PULL THE THREAD GENTLY TO SEAT IT INTO THE SPRING. That is the key. After I made sure the thread was all the way in, like magic my lower thread was working perfectly. "

It sounded too easy BUT it really works, Brother should post a better picture of this in the manual.Once you see how to guide the thread
into the inner slot into the tension-adjusting spring it is a snap. A easy check to see if it is inserted correstly is that when looking down at the bobbin you will notice that the bobbin thread leaves the bobbin spool from the left front and goes back toward the needle side. If the bobbin thread leaves the bobbin spool directly from the back then you missed the adjusting spring and the you will have looping issues and the tension control knob will be useless.

I Hope this helps all the frustrated end users!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Very glad I bought this machine, September 20, 2009
By Tiffany Nelson
I was using a 30 year old klunker of a sewing machine to make sure I liked the hobby before I bought one of my own. Well, I ended up liking sewing a lot, so instead of fighting with the old machine that kept skipping, making mistakes, and the light cord wouldn't stay connected, I just bought a new one and have been overly thrilled ever since.

-This machine looks attractive
-Sews through thick fabric very well
-Has a decent light (though more light could never hurt)!
-Comes with a light duty dust cover
-Has 'quilting features' such as the huge expandable deck which is convenient.
-I really LOVE the see-thru bobbin area (I had no clue how much that would be a life saver to check if you're running low or to see if there's a jam).
-The stitch functions are fun to use and varied.
-The numbered threading system does help me get it done quickly. Though, there is a bit of a learning curve. Took me a few weeks to really understand it.
-Automatic bobbin winding is a snap!
-Relatively quiet my husband said, and I agree.

Things that could be improved or are a little confusing to me, even after reading manual:

-I still don't understand the automatic needle threader so I just thread by hand.
-The stitch selector wheel confuses me at times as to what I'm selecting.
-The stitch width and stith length dials could be labeled with words to make it effortless. (I used a label maker to add my own.)
-Cord for foot pedal could be longer.
-Foot pedal could use some 'gentle' settings. It seems to want to go 0-60mph very quickly when I just want to start out stitching slowly.

So all in all, a VAST improvement for me, and this price bracket and quality of machine will last me a long, long time. I am glad I spent the money on a good machine and didn't have to return a cheap one to the store.

NO disappointments!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  One Weird Design Flaw, September 5, 2008
By Tanya K. Burkhart
As stated above, great basic starter - no electronic parts to fry, 100% mechanical sewing machine. Automatic buttonholer is really easy to use.

Strangely, for machine that is so well put-together, the little drawer in front that comes off for the free arm sewing, isn't actually a drawer at all - it's just wasted vertical space (called a "storage compartment")without even a lip the hold a seam ripper or extra bobbins. The manual says to put accessories in a bag and then into the storage compartment. Waste of space on an otherwise well-made simple machine.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great machine, works exactly as I needed -- for hemming jeans, May 12, 2009
By Cindy (Near Washington, D.C.)
After looking around for a relatively inexpensive machine for basic sewing needs, I decided on the Brother XL-3750, and I'm very glad I did. Today I hemmed 3 pairs of jeans that have never fit correctly. I had no problem whatsoever simply using the included needle and working carefully around the seams -- and I feel like I've added 3 items to my wardrobe! Love it! I'm 5'2" and have SUCH a hard time getting jeans and other items to be the length I like, even when I order petite.

I found the machine easy to set-up and use. I haven't used a sewing machine in years, so I was working from the enclosed instructions and a very foggy memory. YouTube videos about basic sewing (and hemming pants!) are a great resource, too.

Overall, I highly recommend this machine. I still have to figure out all of the accessories and assorted tasks it can perform, but it looks like there will lots of fun sewing ahead, and I'm excited to get my 10- and 8-year old girls involved, too. I would give this machine 4.5 stars if I could; the only reason I'm not giving it 5 is because the instructions are a tiny bit unclear in parts (but very good overall) and I think the length of the power cord could be a bit longer (but that's what extension cords are for, right?).

1.0 out of 5 stars.  quilter1, May 3, 2009
By Florence L. Blankenship (Salisbury, MD USA)
Horrible! My husband bought this for me for Christmas off Amazon.com. Almost immediately it had thread tension issues & has now been in for repairs 4 times, with a 5th trip coming this week. Amazon has refused to refund our money because it did not have the problem within 30 days of purchase. So I'm stuck with a piece of junk.... I'll never buy another Brother product & Amazon has a stupid refund policy.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good sewing machine, March 19, 2009
By M. Yotsumoto (Littleton, CO.)
I bought this sewing machine for making costumes for a school play.
I have been using it for about a month now, and I like it very much.
It is very stable, relatively quiet, and it can handle thick fabric well.
I have not tried some of the extra functions yet, but I am looking forward to this.
My only complaint is that the light is kind of dim. But usually that's a common problem for any sewing machines.
Overall, this is a good sewing machine for both starters and experienced sewers.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  So far, very good product, December 28, 2008
By T. Shiurba (Friday Harbor Washington)
I'm new to sewing. I had a different brother sewing machine that I returned because it's thread tension got messed up and nobody At Brother could explain how to fix it. This machine is a lot easier to use as it sets the stitch length and width according to the style of stitching you choose. You just need to check that your fabric type goes with default stitch width and length. The only thing that didn't work right away, was the automatic threader and the buttonhole creator. I think something's wrong with those two items and you only get 30 days to return it. Since I sew very little during the time that I've had it, this time constraint is terrible.
The instructions are not clear for the buttonhole stitch and the self threader, and there's no troubleshooting for helping myself that resulted in learning how to use them.
Maybe there is a glitch in these two items, but I don't have the time so far to straighten it out.
On the last brother machine I had a very hard time contacting an actual person, and the site for her Brother's sewing machine didn't give enough information to troubleshoot these ideas. I tried to help myself in a million ways using Google search.
I'm making doll clothes for some sock toys that I've turned into a little rabbit family. Doll clothes are very small and difficult to sew.
So far, the machine has been easy to use for straight stitches, zigzag, basic threading of the machine and bobbin making. Considerably Better than the old Singer machine, I started out with.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  I would not recommend this, November 24, 2009
By Splenitive (Michigan)
I hadn't sewn in a while and decided to get an inexpensive, entry-level machine. This one was a mistake. The tension is completely messed up. Every time I have to change a bobbin I have to play with it until I've used half the thread on it before it finally gives me a decent stitch. I really wish I had bought something else.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Just awful, April 4, 2009
By crazy mom (chicago)
This was a cheap machine - that is the only good thing about it. Basically you get what you pay for. Most of the parts are plastic, the foot does not stay on, you just cant turn the screw tight enough. It is impossible to get the needle plate off. The instructions are terrible.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  I Give Up, August 15, 2010
By Teach26 (VA)
I did not buy this from Amazon but I feel the need to comment anyway. I have been using this machine for almost two years - not sure how I've managed. I taught myself how to sew on this machine. Because I was such a novice, I was never positive if the issues were my fault or if the machine was the problem. I can safely say it is the machine. I agree with everyone that mentioned the thread tension. I spent hours researching how thread tension works and no matter what I did, nothing changed. My current problem is that the needle hits the presser foot. Again, I troubleshooted and it's nothing I did. I'm guessing that it might have something to do with the fact that the presser foot is so loose and can't be tightened. The manual is useless and I see no point in spending the money on repairs. I thought I was being frugal since I had no idea how to sew - big mistake! Save your money and buy something better...

5.0 out of 5 stars.  So many things going on with this machine.... AND THAT'S GOOD!, January 7, 2011
By alice (ANAHEIM, CA, US)
This machine is ridiculous! It does so many things and for this price? If you're looking for a beginner machine or a little upgrade for the one you have I say go for this!

I've bought mine a few weeks ago to replace my Singer 1525. I've been sewing for years and yes, older models are a lot better than plastic ones like these. But sewing has been my passion and I can't afford the more high end machines. With that being said, don't underestimate this machine. It's sews most fabrics, even three layers of denim with ease (Use appropriate needle size). However I don't think it's going to sew a belt-thick multiple layers of fabric and dense materials. (Maybe it can, but I strongly doubt it) I'm fine with that because I mostly sew using cotton, knits and lightweight fabrics. And I want to mention how this machine sounds. I've always been picky with sewing machines especially with how they sound. This one doesn't rattle and it's not even loud. It's also lightweight, lighter than my anatomy textbook. It may not be one of those pricier high end machines but it's cheaper and packed with features.

The reasons why I got this machine are:
1. One step Buttonhole
2. Variety of stitches
3. Uses twin needles
4. Complete set (different presser feet, quilting features etc) It even has a carrying case.
5. Best deal (Kudos to Amazon)

The buttonhole is so fun! I barely needed to adjust the width of the stitches. Just sew and you have a buttonhole! I had a couple of errors with this one while I was trying to familiarize myself with it. I had a few jams on the bobbin thread. This is because of my tension and also, since the stitches are so close you want to make sure you have enough layer of fabric so the needle won't just push it down the feed dog and jam things up. Few moments later I had 7 buttonholes. I'm very very pleased.

I told myself.. now all I have to do is sew the button. But I don't need to because this machine can do that for me! I didn't know that until I had the machine. You just need to know the width of the holes and you will need to use a zigzag stitch. The manual has all the information you'll need. I just followed its clear instructions and I was smiling all the time. (Yes I had to add that.)

The variety of stitches are so exciting! Just by turning the knob, you can do heirloom stitches, regular and top stitches. You can use them as decorative and functional stitches. Make sure to use the right tension and stitches for every fabric. You have the manual for that. You might say, well I don't need all that stitches. True. But if you can get a machine that has those stitches for this price, I still think it's a good deal.

It also uses a twin needle, I've never had a machine that uses one before so I had to try it. You can almost sew on all stitches using the twin needle (except the buttonhole)but make sure your stitch width is not bigger than three! Your twin needle will break! You can use the twin needle for decorative top stitches. Use different colored threads or the same ones.

Some things I'm not so gaga about:

1. Automatic needle threader - I imagined it be something less strenuous to the eyes. But it still is, you need to make sure your thread goes through the hook. So basically instead of going through the eye of the needle, you need your thread to pass a hook which is still relatively small.

2. The quilting bed - I thought it would be something bigger. I'm not a quilter but I saw what my quilter friends do and they need a bigger space than the one that comes with the machine.

3. The carrying case is more like a storage case. It has no handles so I guess if you want to carry it, you'll scrunch it between your waist and one arm.

These three aren't even a big deal because I'm gaga over all the machine. I'm very happy with my Brother XL-3750.

A note on the thread tension of the bobbin, you need to make sure your bobbin thread passes through the tension dial. To be sure you did this right, you're going to hear a soft click and when you try to remove the thread by going the opposite direction (if you're operating the machine it will be to your right)it won't come off easily. This is because the bobbin is in the tension dial.

Bottom line: This machine is the best deal. I'm very pleased with my purchase.

P.S. I recently learned that Singer went bankrupt and had to go for cheap Chinese parts. Brothers are all made in Taiwan. Working with both machines, I prefer the Brother with over all performance. I'm not a big fan of computerized sewing machines, they cost more to repair than mechanical ones.

Have fun sewing enthusiasts! I hope you find your BFF machine like I did with this one. Happy Shopping!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  GREAT MACHINE!, June 18, 2009
By @maandym Mandy (Cambridge, MA USA)
I love this machine so much! I did a lot of homework before buying it. It's better than any Singer! The only machine I have tried that I thought "wow, this is better" was my friend's who is majoring in Fashion. Her machine is a Bernette 82e, but like she said... I'm a home sewer! Even though I sell some Lolita Clothing in some times of the year, I don't live out of it. So this machine is more than enough. I totally reccomend this machine!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  If your having tension troubles read this review!, January 13, 2011
By Melissa
I just bought this machine brand new. I read the reviews on amazon and even though there was so much negative feedback about the thread tension I decided to take the plunge.

I got it out of the box, hooked it up,threaded the machine, and tried sewing a straight line and sure enough the thread tension was all out of wack. No matter what I set the thread tension on there were loops on the top of my fabric.

I decided to investigate. I called the brother customer service and they were very quick and helpful. It turns out that the machine must be threaded very carefully due to the specific instructions in the manual (duh!). My thread tension trouble was all due to the bobbin being put in upside down. Basically, drop the bobbin in and thread the thread according to the arrow pointing to the left. After that, when you pull on the thread, the bobbin should turn COUNTER CLOCKWISE not clockwise. All I had to do was turn take the bobbin out and turn it over.

Problem solved. The machine works GREAT now!

I hope this helps anyone with this problem!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Met my needs-and grew with them!, November 28, 2010
By Geek-Lover
After not having sewn- or quilted- for close to 20 years, I decided to get 'back in the game', I wasn't too sure of my commitment to this long-lapsed hobby so, I didn't want to invest too much money. I bought this machine in August, 2009 and was sewing my first project in one day! Since then, I've become a confirmed quilting fanatic- and have probably pushed this machine beyond it's intended use or life-cycle in the last year or so. This review is for QUILTERS only! I've hemmed some pants but, am not a crafter, garment-maker or other sewer type!

The walking foot did break within the first use- and rather than becoming a deal-breaker (new walking foots can run between $25 and up!)- it pushed me to a new level of free-motion quilting, which the machine does splendidly. The stitch length and tension remains consistent, and I've become a free-motion enthusiast! Large projects are a snap- but, watch your neede-size! If you are sewing heavy layers- use a large needle- small needles break often, especially when pulling bulky fabrics with the feed-dogs covered.

I've sewn on this inexpensive machine for up to 10-hours in a day- without losing functionality, tension, or performance. The only caution for 'intense-sewers' is make sure you have extra lamp bulbs! I've burned through a few from intense use and ran out in the wee hours of the evening (7:30pm for me!) and found my local fabric store had run out- pushing me to a local Target for a lower wattage, nightlight bulb- not a good alternative!

I wasn't sure of my commitment but- I haven't felt the need to upgrade for my quilting- yet. I may get a new machine to add some decorative stitching which this machine doesn't do but- for all mid-level, or 'new-advanced' quilters- this is a heck of a buy!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Instructions for XL-3750 Sewing Machine, April 22, 2010
By Maureen Armstrong (Cowgil, Mo. USA)
I received my machine in record time from Amazon and started reading all about how to use it as soon as I got it unpacked. Really nice looking machine and easy to see all the details. The instructions for this machine are easy to read and understand. Really like the self threading needle, I have trouble threading needles and this feature is great. Learning how to use all the controls was a little hard for me. Overall I enjoy the machine and like how it works. Once you understand all the basics you can make almost any design you would want. The quilting features are outstanding I have recommended the machine to my quilting buddies.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Works pretty good once you figure it out., April 8, 2009
By skidder_gal (Minnesota, USA)
This machine is a lot quieter than my last machine. I haven't done any quilting on it yet, but I have been making pillow cases and cloth diapers and it handles the velcro and everything just fine. At first it was skipping stitches when I would sew the velcro, but I just needed to adjust the length of the stitches and change the needle. It works great now. It is very picky about the needle, the needle needs to be sharp and replaced when it is supposed to be otherwise you will start losing stitches that is why I only gave it four stars. With my last machine I could use the same needle forever, which is probably why this one seems so odd to me. However, with my first machine I remember needing to replace the needle quite often.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  worthless!, March 24, 2010
By A. Breininger
I've had this machine for a little over a year and it has been so disappointing! I've had it in the shop twice for tension issues and I'm finally giving up. It's like the tension dial doesn't even work. I know that tension can be a funny thing but this machine is absurd. I get the same wavering loose stitches on ANY setting. I'm pretty sure the dial is for decorative purposes and the machine has a mind of its own. The manual has been of no help. I've read the entire thing cover to cover several times and it is not very thorough. Based on this product I would never buy from Brother again.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great machine!, March 11, 2009
By S. Rhodes
I bought this machine as a starter machine for quilting and making clothing for my daughter. So far I've made two baby quilts and the quilting accessories are awesome and very helpful! I've also sewn dresses and cloth diapers for my daughter. I am very pleased with this machine and recommend it to others who are looking for a good starter machine.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Problem with thread tension, July 19, 2010
By Roxana C
A seemingly small problem, but makes the machine useless. The upper thread tension wheel does not work, as a few other reviewers have also pointed out. I have tried all settings and all stitches, and I have the same problem. I have just unpacked the machine, and I was just testing the stitches up and down a simple muslin material. It worked nicely for half an hour. Then, when I changed a stitch, tension just got messed up, and nothing I've tried afterward worked. Not even returning to the stitches that originally worked...Will have to return it.
Otherwise, it seemed like the machine I was looking for. Very simple to use, and the needle threader is a gift!
I also had questions in my mind about the speed control, when I was shopping. Electronic speed control does not mean anything for the end user, just a technical specification. The only way to control speed is through the foot pedal. It works ok, not too speedy.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great starter machine, April 7, 2011
By BiggestLittle
I'm very new to sewing, so I bought this hoping it would have enough features for a newbie and be a solid machine. It is! I made my first lap quilt (pinwheels! what was I thinking?!) and it did an awesome job. I'm still getting to know this machine, but every problem I've had I've been able to solve. The auto needle threader is AWESOME and if you take the time to read the manual it really isn't hard to figure out. There are step-by-step instructions and pictures for nearly all of the machine's functions and features, and lists to tell you what settings are best for what kinds of fabric and what needle sizes to use. So helpful for a newbie!

Notes on what solved my problems thus far... Drop-in bobbin: It's actually much simpler to put in the bobbin than the standard type, but make sure your thread comes through that tension spring! The manual treats this as a tiny side note, but it's very important for correct tension! Using the tension dial: it was a bit scary as a newbie to mess around with that dial while trying to learn the machine (and how to sew). However, I now know that tension dial is important to play with when your stitches aren't quite right. Oh, this machine does not seem to have a separate adjustment dial for bobbin tension, which simplifies tension adjustment because you just have to get the top tension right to get nice even stitches.

The top thread holder pin (does that have a name?) is a bit skinny and I've had some problems with the thread tangling around that pin or spinning in a very odd way. My friend recommended a little felt circle to go over the pin, and it has worked wonders.

Walking foot: I'd never used one before this, but after I installed it I realized it is a great invention. This machine's walking foot REALLY DOES work well.
Darning foot: I've never used one on other machines, but I've heard other people complain about the closed ring, or the types made of metal because you can't see where your stitches are going. This foot is clear and you can see where you are stitching, and if you wanted an opening in your foot you could always cut your own notch (scary, but I've seen others do it with great results).

I'm just learning to free motion quilt, and this machine is nowhere near as fast as those I see working on youtube tutorials, BUT it will produce nice even stitches after playing with the tension A LOT, and learning to move my quilt at the right pace. If you get any nice stitches in a trial run, then you know it is not a tension issue when you get those crazy loops and tangles, but it is likely you are moving the fabric too fast for how fast your needle is actually moving. Slow down your hands, but maintain the pedal speed.

Great machine. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants a solid economy machine.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Horrendous tension issues, September 7, 2010
By Tinuviel
I traded out an ancient Kenmore for this machine, and after fighting it for months I wish I had my old clunker back. I've had endless problems with the tension - either the thread snaps every other stitch or half the stitches on the back don't take, and there's no in between. I wish I'd given up on this awful machine sooner, so that I could have returned it. It's too late for that now and I'm stuck with it. Brother's customer support is also non-existent.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Stopped working after 30 minutes. Typical junk, July 21, 2010
By Bobby Phillips (Magnolia, Texas)
Gave this as a gift, so it was unopened for several weeks. She used it for less than an hour and it quit working. The bobbin quit turning. Took it to a repair shop, and they said after several more weeks that it was more expensive to repair than the machine was worth. Now it's past Amazon's return window, so I'm stuck with a piece of junk. Caveat emptor !

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Faulty Machine?, March 29, 2011
By K. Remesch (Canada)
I did not buy the machine at Amazon. I bought it at Walmart and it had the same tension issues that I've seen posted at other sites on the web. I may have had a faulty machine but wasn't willing to take a second chance due to the number of complaints in regards to the same issues I was having and wound up buying another machine altogether.

At first glance, the features and the price seamed too good to be true. It worked great the first day but I found the pedal to be very insensitive. There was basically no real sensitivity. No matter how lightly I pressed on the pedal, there was either no response or a faster response than expected. The machine had a hammering sound that made it sound like there was something wrong with the mechanics of it (and yes, I did read the manual on how to thread it and the bobbin).

The second day, I wound up with the tension problems I've read about. It didn't matter what I did or what advice I followed from reviews on this site and others. I eventually came to the conclusion that there simply wasn't any real advice that worked for me and that there is a rather disturbingly large number of faulty machines among this model.

I gave it a 3 out of 5 due to the fact that many people appear to have had luck with it and also due to the number of features that it comes with. However, I doubt I will give this model another chance due to the similarity of problems that people seem to have with it (including myself), even after months of usage.

All in all, I really wanted to like this machine but was rather disappointed. The storage compartment was meagre and requires a plastic ziplock bag if you actually require its usage unlike other machines that actually have a holding compartment. Thread tension seems to fail anywhere in between the first couple of uses up to a couple of months, and the sensitivity of the pedal leaves a lot to be desired. I've heard good things about Brother machines, but I would steer clear of this particular model.

Pros:
Features and number of parts included
number of stithes
double needle possibility and double needles included
incredibly easy to thread if you follow the manul (don't understand why some people found that aspect difficult)

cons:
Pedal sensitivity
No way to bypass automatic tension settings and faulty automatic tension settings (wasted a lot of thread in first two days as well as material that cannot be salvaged)

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Tension problems, January 1, 2011
By mystery lover (Arizona City, AZ USA)
I bought this machine in June and for about 3 months it worked just fine. Then one day I went to use it and the bottom thread kept looping, jamming and missed stitches. By adjusting per the manual, it sometimes decided to work. Then the top tension went bad. It will only do about 3 to 5 stitches before it breaks the thread. Have tried unsuccessfully to get it adjusted correctly. Still can't use the machine at all now. Wish it wasn't to late to return.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Gift: Wonderful Sewing Machine!, June 2, 2010
By TheCouch
I was given this sewing machine for Mother's Day and I haven't stopped sewing/quilting since. It's simple to thread and it sews smoothly and quietly -- like a dream. There are SO many stitch choices -- vines, flowers, double lines, squares and more -- and all you need to do is press a button and they just happen! I feel like I've been sewing in the dark ages until this machine came into me; the constant rethreading, uneven stitching, constant swearing -- GONE FOREVER! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
(The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it comes with an automatic needle threader but I haven't been able to get that to work yet.)

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Brand New To Sewing, April 3, 2009
By Justin R. Turner
I just got this machine last week & I love it. I am new to sewing and wanted to start out with a machine that was not to complex. This one has been great so far; there are a lot of features & extras on this machine, but it is not confusing at all. Great instructions for setting it up & it made short work of a purse I made in a class yesterday. I think this is a great machine for a novice & a more advanced sewer.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  sewing machine to use on vacation, March 8, 2009
By M. Harrison (Colorado)
I purchased this sewing machine to use at my parent's house when I am visiting them. For my purposes, I feel that the quality is good and the price is right.

My only complaints are (1) the stitch information in the manual seems confusing, but my opinion may change as I have a chance to use the machine more and (2) the machine was supposed to come with a 1/4 inch presser foot for quilting (which is why I selected this machine) and that particular foot was not included in my accessories pack.

The weight of the machine is great for a mobile sewing machine. I think this machine was a good value for the reasons I purchased it.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Sewing Machine for my Wife, January 18, 2009
By D. McShane (San Antonio, TX USA)
I purchased this as a Christmas gift for my wife. She especially likes how easy it is to use. It is a replacement for a machine that I bought her many years ago that was much more difficult to learn how to operate all of its features. She likes its lightweight and portability. She says that she recommends this machine to others looking for a new machine.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Christmas present for daughter, December 29, 2009
By Sassyvamp (Elsie, Oregon USA)
The first thing that made me fall in love with this product was that after ordering it, it came to my house more quickly than it was estimated. I was very pleased with this as it was a present to my daughter for Christmas. I asked her how she was doing with it a couple of days ago and she is just as thrilled with as I had hoped she would be. The self-threading option was one of the best features in her eyes as she is a beginner sewer. I had read some reviews that the instructions were rather difficult to comprehend but she is having no trouble with that. The only problem with this purchase at all is the fact that she wishes she had more time to sew with it. I am very please all the way around with this purchase.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Really hating on this machine right now, October 23, 2010
By MK (Chicago, IL United States)
I can't even begin to express how sorry I am that I bought this machine. First - it's ridiculously difficult to thread, and I need to keep a pair of tweezers handy to pull the upper thread out from the machine before I can even get it to the very silly needle threading mechanism. Second - the bobbin tension is all over the board - some of the stitches will be fine, some will be loose, and some will have giant wads of thread on one side or the other. Using the "correct" bobbin seems to make absolutely no difference. I should have kept the old Kenmore that I had in high school; it wasn't fancy, but at least you could hem a pair of pants on it without having to pull the stitches out three times and turning the air blue with curses in the process.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Super Easy Set-Up for a First-Timer!, February 28, 2011
By Katrina Imson
I have never used a sewing machine before yesterday. I'm 27 years old and I've only done hand sewing, 2-3, 5 times at most in my life. But I am expecting my first child (a girl!) I thought now would be a good time to start learning how to sew! First, I needed a sewing machine. I scoured Amazon for a good one and leaned towards this one because it's pretty much half off. The reviews were mostly good--except for the whole thread tension thing. But I didn't let that deter me. Ordered this one and got it a week later.

I have to admit I was a little intimidated at first just because--well, how the heck do you set this thing up? I read the directions, was overwhelmed by all the sew-speak, and gave up and went to bed. A couple of days later I was ready again. I took the machine out of the box and located the parts, familiarizing myself with the names, where they were, what they did. I may have done a Google search or 2 (ok, more like 15) to get more of an idea of why these parts were important. When I felt brave enough, I set it up. Mind you, I've NEVER used a sewing machine, so I sure as heck have never set one up. But it was a BREEZE. I just followed the directions step by step and voila! I was practicing on rag in no time. I even made a trip to Wal-Mart to get some scrap fabric to play with and some cheap cute fabric for my first project! I had no problem at all with thread tension--oh, except I forgot to put the presser foot down when I first tried it (I'm sure this is a rookie mistake) but I re-read the directions, figured out what I did wrong, and then it was fine.

I highly recommend this sewing machine and I can't wait to churn out projects!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great machine for those on a budget!, January 5, 2011
By Amy E Allen (Lillington, NC United States)
I got this machine after returning a Singer which was similar in price. The Brother XL 3750 had many, many more features and works great! I had a little trouble learning how to thread the bobbin, but figured it out quickly. The machine is quiet in my opinion, and lightweight so it will be easy to move from place to place. I am very pleased with my purchase!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Just what I was looking for in a new sewing machine., November 9, 2010
By My2kids
I liked the drop in bobbin, free arm and extended table in this model. I researched several brands and Brother was well made. I like the extra stitches it comes with. Just the right amount for an intermediate sewer like me. I have a old Kenmore that was difficult to use. This new machine is so smooth and quiet. The price point made it worth it for me to buy a new machine since I haven't sewn in many years.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great for Beginner Quilters, September 30, 2010
By mdgram
I bought this machine a few months ago when I decided to learn to quilt. Since then I have made several small projects, and have just completed my first REAL quilt. The machine has been wonderful and I've had no problems with it. The learning curve was very short except for the fancy stitches. I've tried to follow the manual to do them and when I sew the desired stitch it doesn't look like the manual. Will work on that. I love this machine.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Brother XL-3750 Sewing Machine, January 31, 2010
By dreamy12 (Port Angeles, WA)
This machine works great for me right outta the box. Easy to thread and wind the bobbin. Thread tension is just right. Foot pedal is easy for me to control. I am very happy with my purchase of this refurbished machine. Had to replace my 31 year old Singer because it was stored with too much moisture in the air (good old Pacific Northwest). Otherwise it would probably still be working. I've made 2 purses so far and plan on doing a lot more. I recommend this machine.

My wife used this machine for a year till now and she found it helpful and handy also time consuming for many actions that used to take time from her before..Threading system and button sewing also button hole controller is great.. it can be carried everywhere she needs for its light weight and easy handling .. free arm offered her greater area for sewing larger pieces ..Many other features are really amazing.

We received our sewing machine as promised. The 3750 was easy to thread and operate, but the instructions for setting the thread tension were confusing. After experimenting on scraps, I was able to get the correct tension. I believe it was a good investment.

By gatt (Saint Lucia, West Indies)
I was looking for a great machine to sew with. The one I used had just gone bonkers on me so I decided to try looking for one online. After reading all the reviews I decided to purchase this one and the price was very good at the time. I must say that I was not disappointed. It is just so easy to sew with this machine. The manual is very easy to follow. And the button hole function, Wow!

I simply love this machine. Thank you Amazon for making it possible to get some good quality products at very reasonable prices.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good cheap sewing machine, November 4, 2010
By Victor Leonard (Cambridge, MA)
I bought this sewing machine a few years ago when I saw it on sale. I need a sewing machine maybe a dozen times a year and I find that this machine is roughly what I need. In general I'm happy with it but I noticed that my concerns and those of the other reviewers here seemed to be fairly different.

My first real complaint is that the manual is poorly done. It is wordy with very poor sketches to go with the text. On top of that, the manual alternates between English and Spanish at a paragraph level making it uncomfortable to read through. If you don't have previous experience, it would be very difficult to understand significant and important sections of the manual. After using the machine and puzzling out how to use things like the needle threader, I can see what is trying to be conveyed but wasn't able to understand from reading the manual. The lower loading/threading the bobbin is another of the hard to understand sections which is probably a big culprit in the many complaints of poor tensioning.

My next concern would be that this sewing machine is definitely built cheaply. Mostly I'm ok with it. It's built down to a price that I'm willing to pay and in general I don't have problems with where and how it's been "cheaped" out. This machine wouldn't last in a tailors shop but it seems to do fine for the occasional work that I want it for. The only thing that I've noticed that feels flimsy for its relative usage is the presser foot lever. It's also poorly placed such that it's harder to reach than in other machines and takes up space in the already small throat.

The storage area isn't really a storage area. It might have been so in a previous generation of machine but it's partially open in the back. The manual says to put things in a bag before putting them in here. This is unfortunate because this machine is very light and makes for a good portable machine. Having a small place to put a few accessories when taking this elsewhere would be ideal.

Beyond that my complaints are not surprising in a machine at this price. The throat is smaller than I'd like, the lesser used controls are difficult to use, repair of this machine is probably not an option.

Then there's the good side.

Everything works and nothing has broken or had mechanical problems in the past couple of years of occasional usage and general neglect. Mine has worked consistently and reliably for me.

There is good control of the sewing speed with the pedal and the fastest speed is significantly faster than many of the other sewing machines I've played with.

It's very light so it's easy to move about and quick and easy to set up and thread. Thus it's easy to take it where I need it, use it and then toss it back in a crate when I'm done.

All told I'm quite happy with this machine for the price I paid and would recommend this to friends with similar needs.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  I'm a fan, June 9, 2009
By Ms. Private (MA)
I like my new Brother a lot. I completed my first project some time ago and the machine did a very good job overall. Except, when handling more than two layers of fabric or around the zipper the stitch length was somewhat irregular - but I am ready to admit that i'm not a profi sewer, so maybe a thicker needle or other adjustments may have done the trick.
I'm not 100% happy with the manual, there is some room for improvement.
But I would definitely recommend the Brother XL3750 for anybody who is looking for an easy-to-handle, fun sewing machine.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  great little machine, June 28, 2011
By capohpc
After 40 years, my Singer quit. I reviewed machines and after some consideration, I purchased the Brother XL-3750. After some studies from the not too clear instruction book, I was finally able to begin my project. I found the XL-3750 to be a great little machine! It does such an easy job. The winding of the bobbin is not as easy as my old Singer, but a small price to pay for the work the machine does. Also, I have been used to controlling with my knee, so using the foot pedal with my foot takes a little getting used to. But overall- I am very satisfied and would recommend this sewing machine to anyone - beginner or advanced.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great product for the price, June 27, 2011
By Caitlin
Being a beginner to novice sewer I did a lot of research before purchasing this machine. I learned how to sew in fashion classes in high school and occasionally sewed throughout college. I was looking for a machine that could help me with a tee shirt quilt as well as other small projects. For being under $120, I think this is the best out there. The bobbins are easy to make, and threading the machine isn't difficult. The pedal is a little different than what I am used to, so it takes a little bit to get used to.
I would recommend this to a friend who is looking for a machine under $150.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  I love this machine!, June 20, 2011
By Karen D. Williams
I used to sew many years ago,so I thought a complicated machine with all the electronic gizmos might be too advanced for me. When my machine arrived it was up and running in about 10 minutes. It was so simple and easy to set up and start sewing. I love the self threader because my sight is not what is used to be. I have been experimenting with the various stitches,wow..I am impressed! I spent many weeks researching the perfect machine. I used Brother machines in the past and I know they have always been a great value. For the price point, I was not able to find a machine with all the features of this machine.

Some of the reviews I read mentioned problems with the tension, I did not experience that problem. I have been having so much fun doing alterations on clothes I thought I would have to give away because I lost weight. Now I make them fit just right. My son seems to grow an inch a week so I buy his clothes a little larger than he is just to keep up. Now I can alter them first and let them out as he grows. Nothing makes me happier than saving money.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  after first impression was over, April 1, 2011
By one picture lady (USA)
I had the machine long enough to make a quilt and start on another one.... It quit working and I contacted the seller to find out what I could do about it. He recommended taking it in to get it serviced, I took it in and they were going to charge $99 to just look at it. I contacted the seller again and he wanted to make up some sort of story about how I got the machine to get a refund or replacement ....something about it not being covered under warranty because I bought it online... this should have been stated loud and clear during purchasing so I could have known up front I was taking a gamble.. not comfortable with lying so I just basically decided I would have to lose the money on it. The sewing machine repair shop said this machine wasn't that great of one. I now am using a really old Singer and LOVE it... will never buy Brother again.. JUNK...

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Not one problem, March 5, 2011
By Roberta F. Stevens (TRAVERSE CITY, MICHIGAN, US)
After reading about tension problems, inability to understand the manual. . . I find NO PROBLEMS what-so-ever with this machine. I LOVE it. I received it yesterday, and have already completed an old fashion pinafore with lots of gathering, button holes, etc. for a presentation of Huckleberry Finn. The ONLY problem with tension was created by "pilot error". I had put the bobbin in the wrong way!!!! The machine comes with a fabric cover with outside pockets. You CAN carry the machine with the cover on because there is a flap in the top to enable access to the carry handle. Another complaint I have not found. I am not an EXPERT seamstress by any stretch, but I am pretty good! This is a great machine, especially for the price!

This sewing machine does everything that I need it to do. It runs smoothly, threads easily, quilts nicely, and was very affordable. I'm finishing my first quilt, and couldn't be more pleased with this purchase. I highly recommend this machine.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  my FIRST sewing machine, January 31, 2011
By leeann0728 (Northern New Mexico)
I have never used a sewing machine before and wanted one that would be easy to use and of good quality. I did a lot of research and looking at sewing machine after sewing machine. I am VERY PLEASED with this machine. After reading terrible reviews about Singer sewing machines and a lot of good reviews on Brother sewing machines, I knew I wanted a Brother sewing machine. This one is VERY easy to work with. It took me no time at all and I was doing sewing projects on it. It even came with a few extras (bobbins, quilting foot, etc). The only thing is I have a hard time with the automatic threader...but that's no big deal to me. I easily just thread the thread through myself. If you have a hard time seeing that might be an issue for you.

All in all, I have had no issues. It's a very simple and easy machine to work with. The thread never gets tangled/jammed...has drop in bobbins. I love it!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Brother XL-3750, January 18, 2011
By Ralph
This light-weight machine is just what I needed! My old machine didn't have the stretch stitch or needle threader. I love the needle threader! Just follow the directions and it works perfectly! I will be using it soon to make a quilt and expect it will perform just as well as when I needed the stretch stitch.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good First Sewing Machine: but was a referb sold as new, January 6, 2011
By kiltguy
This is my very first sewing machine.
Although the packaging looked like new, there was an oily fingerprint on the sewing machine.
As I was going through the manual to learn how it works, I found that two of the controls would only turn part way.
I sewed a bit on a fabric scrap, but the cloth would only feed backwards and would only sew a straight stitch.
Ordinarily, I'd have sent it back for a replacement right then. But I wanted to sew, and hey, I have a screw driver around here somewhere . . .
The inside of the sewing machine has about a half dozen more dirty fingerprints on it, and the screws had obviously been in and out of their plastic fittings a few times . . .
There is quite a bit of clockwork in a sewing machine. Mine included several connecting rods. Two of them were not attached at one end. One of them had jammed in the clockwork. It took a little while, but I figured out where they were supposed to attach and un-bent a plate that one of them had bent.
It worked! I was able to do some of the exercises in my how-to-sew book, and the machine worked like a champ.
The controls are simple and easily to hand, the feed is straight and switching from one stitch to another is smooth and fast.
If it had actually been a New sewing machine, I'd have given it five stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Works for Me, October 20, 2010
By D.M. (Colorado Springs, Co)
I purchased this machine for doing quick simple costume alterations and mending. It works very well, and is easy to transport. Like the self-threading needle feature, simple operation, and durability of the machine. A good little workhorse and great machine for most sewing projects.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Bother Sewing Machine, March 11, 2009
By dawnjoe (USA)
I bought this product last month and have only been able to use it once. The project turned out just fine and I had no problem setting up the machine and getting it to work. I am sure it will get plenty of use over the coming years.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice inexpensive machine, except....., August 22, 2011
By SpringMI
In 1975 I bought a top of the line Viking and have sewn thousands of
miles of fabric with it, the foot pedal quit and new pedals are very expensive so my daughter sent me this machine around Christmas time. I was surprised how well the machine works and would recommend it except for one glitch and that is the thread tension. For some reason the tension does not seem to be consistent when putting in a new bobbin and waste much thread getting the tension set again.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  A few issues with the refurbished model..., July 9, 2011
By dcanner (SC)
We bought this item for a great price refurbished. The machine arrived very quickly and works great. However we did not receive the bonus feet and cloth carrying bag which were advertised as being included. I contacted Ken's Sewing using the emails provided in the paperwork. No response from either. I then contacted them through Amazon and received immediate response. They contacted the manufacturer and had the bonus feet attachments mailed from the company. I still did not receive the carrying bag, but I was pleased enough with the feet attachments. So make sure you check that all parts are present if you order refurbished.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good little machine, April 22, 2011
By Shirl
This machine is great for quilters. Since I am rather new to quilting this machine is very good for what I do now. It is user friendly, takes no time at all to learn the stitches etc. For the price, you can't beat it.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Lightweight portable sewing machine, April 7, 2011
By boomersmother (Sedona AZ USA)
I have been shopping for a new sewing machine after not having sewed for many years. I wanted something lightweight, portable, and easy to understand. After researching for a few weeks, I decided this was the one I wanted. [...] I am so pleased with my purchase! From unpacking the box to winding the bobbin and threading the needle, the instructions were easy to follow and a breeze. I was up and running within the hour and started my first baby quilt.
After several weeks, I have found no problems and am still pleased. I highly recommend this machine. The only thing I didn't like or understand was the little storage compartment that slipped out of the base. The design doesn't make sense to me, but it is not something that affects my sewing or pleasure with the machine.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great for me to learn on - Brother XL3750, March 9, 2011
By Wayne H. Huckabee
We were given this Brother XL3750 in June, 2010. Being a new sewer and mainly quilter, I have really enjoyed learning to sew on this machine. Having never used a sewing machine before, there was a steep learning curve as I had no one to teach me other than what I could find on the internet and the instruction manual. This machine has been really great for me to learn on. I have purchased several attachments such as the piecing foot with guide that has really helped. Like others, my main issue is with the foot pedal. If Brother would tend to this one issue it would certainly help. That said, I like it overall and would recommend it to others.
