3.0 out of 5 stars.  Easy to Steal, August 29, 2009
By Kevin Sweeney (San Luis Obispo, CA United States)
The attachment mechanism makes it easy to get on and off, which turns out to be not so good for my commuter if I want to lock it up outside.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Gone the first day, September 3, 2009
By Frank Punzo (Philadelphia, PA United States)
This product worked very well the first day I rode into work in the rain. I showed up dry without the normal wet stains on the back of my legs. Unfortunately when I went to ride home it was already gone... so my advice would be to buy it but take it with you when you lock your bike. Apparently criminals know it is a good product too. I just put a new one in my cart - shame I'm out that first 15 bucks.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Keeps spray from butt, back, bag, March 1, 2012
By James L
You'll have no problems with this fender if you know exactly what to expect before buying it. If you expect this clip-on fender to provide the same protection as a full fender set, you'll be disappointed.

This fender wraps around your seat-post with a strap and a lever that snaps into place. If the attachment isn't secure enough, a shim or some cut-up inner-tube will remedy that. Setup is painless compared to other clip-on-type fenders, and you can quickly take it off for sunny days. I tried the Avenir clip-on fender set, and for me, they were a pain to install, adjust, remove, and ultimately return. They aren't truly clip-on in that you still have to mess with screwing things onto your bike.

It'll prevent spray from your rear wheel from hitting your back, but your seat-tube isn't perfectly protected. Spray from my front wheel never seems to reach my body, but it can still get on your down-tube and stuff.

There's a pivot point so you can adjust the angle of the fender, from modest to "whoa there", which'll change the spray-catching effectiveness and the appearance of your bike setup.

This is the most ubiquitous bike accessory seen around the UW campus, used on both mountain bikes and road bikes. You can see the orange strap on bikes everywhere. When I ordered mine, it showed the orange strap version online, but the one I received has a black strap with some thin orange stitching. Both versions look good, but if you have a strong preference, you should probably contact the seller or just buy it from a local store.

This product isn't a whole lot cheaper on Amazon. Many bike stores carry this, for fifteen McDoubles.

I use this on a Pista. I think it looks alright. Depending on your style of bike, you might prefer the look of this fender to a full fender set. This fender seems to be preferred by fixie riders, because it maintains a minimal kind of look while providing necessary protection.

Yes, the disadvantage of this being easily removable is that it can be easily stolen. But if you leave your bike out for shorter lengths of time, or in safer areas, a zip-tie will prevent people from removing it without scissors, deterring most cheapos. This product's so common that they could probably just turn around and take another guy's anyways.

If this sounds reasonable, and you're aware-of and ok with the cons, and if you keep in mind what this product is trying to do without comparing it to full fenders, you won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Keeps your bottom dry, September 9, 2009
By Dthegiantfed (Milwaukee WI USA)
I commute to work on my bike and wanted something to quick attach if the forecast called for rain. This item worked perfectly. Kept me dry from wheel spun water and mud. Only regret is not getting the front fender.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great purchase, June 11, 2009
By Lydia F (Columbus, OH)
I bought this as a gift for my fiance. It only took 3-4 days to arrive and it was in great condition. My fiance informs me that this has kept him entirely dry without any mud or water splashing up his back when riding through puddle or in the rain.
I am very pleased with the quality as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  must have item, March 23, 2009
By Alain
I don't ride my bike in the rain on the road, but do ride my mountain bike in muddy trails or rocky/dusty tracks and the few times I took it out so far it has kept me from having a dirt line on my back !
that with the front fender combination, both of which snap on/off very easily so you can take them when needed, are a good combo.

For the price it's a great item to have, and have limited choices on full suspension MT bike.

I have no idea what 'TrlRunR' is talking about - the strap has little rubber feet as part of the orange web and is very tight on the seat tube. I jump by dirt bike and the thing is solid in place (can't twist it with my hand, unless the bolt on type I checked on a friend's bike).

Looks good on the bike and takes second to take on/off if you don't need it. Not good if you leave your bike out but you can rig something like other reviewer mentioned in that case.

Ideally the fender would cover more in the front of the tire... the support arm is rather thin there.... still get debries thrown at the rear suspension shock. I guess specialized has a small mud guard for some of their bike that mounts on the frame near the tire for that reason that I may need to try next.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  This is the fender for rear suspension bikes, November 30, 2008
By D. White
Buy this one if you have a rear suspension bike. It articulates in the middle so you can change the angle. The nylon binding system allows you to mount it to larger tubes. Niagra Falls bikes are good people.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great for the price., August 30, 2008
By Ryan (Gainesville, FL)
I use this fender on a track bike that I ride on the street and it keeps the water off my back, but not always off the bottom of my thighs. My bike is often locked up outside, so I'd prefer that it not be quick release because it's easy to steal, but I drilled a hole in the fender so I can put my u-lock through it and this works very well. Overall, I'd recommend it for use on a commuter or recreational bike but a full coverage bolt on fender would be a better choice if you'll be riding in the rain on a regular basis.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Not the best option, August 25, 2008
By TrlRunR (Kentucky USA)
Two stars are for very easy attachment to bike and looks. That is about it really. It moves around, gets crooked, bounces, slides down and rubs the tire (and I tigtened it as much as humanly possible).

5.0 out of 5 stars.  sturdy and light, March 29, 2010
By Alyosha (Madison, WI)
Not sure why other reviewers had problems with the fender's stability. I left mine on permanently, and once tightened, it has never moved. I haven't ridden on extremely rugged terrain, though.

The fender mounts very easily. It pivots up and down for adjustment, and that part is tightened with a nut and bolt and requires and Allen wrench. It is very easy to remove, so I would not recommend leaving this on your bike as it is. It's possible to affix it permanently by drilling a hole in it and using a nut and bolt. I fastened mine by threading a zip-tie through it. That seems to have made removing it difficult enough that nobody has messed with it.

The fender is wide, which is good, but for that reason it doesn't look as slick on a road bike as it does on a mountain bike. Also, because of the design, you have to mount it rather high on the seat post, which, depending on how low your seat is, may leave no room for a tail-light.

It's light, and the plastic is flexible, so I'm not worried about it breaking. Good investment.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice and useful accessory, June 6, 2009
By sailrish (Chicago, IL United States)
This helps me a lot since I end up riding in the rain quite often - usually while commuting 3 miles to and from work. It is light, and doesn't rattle - very sturdy, and also looks good on the bike. And it was super easy to install.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great product!, March 14, 2011
By J.W. (Midwest)
I have a fixie and this fender has been excellent. I recommend using a rubber shim (i.e. from a reflector mount) to prevent this from slipping on the seat post. Also, a heavy duty zip tie could be used to prevent theft. I'm using a hose clamp. Looks crazy but I still have my fender so I'm not complaining.

This thing installs very easily. It is universal and does not make your bike look stupid. I have been nearly 100% more dry since I installed this. I really can't think of a better accessory to add to your bike if you ever are forced to ride in the rail... so... get it!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Keep's me bum dry., December 23, 2011
By Patrick c
At first when I bought my extra hip fixed gear bike, I thought, "All right I will never drive again!" But then it started to rain and I got all wet from the tire splash. So, I got the X-tra Dry fender and it works great! My only complaint is that it also goes where a rear bike light would so I can either be seen or dry not both, but that is easily solved by not riding at night. The easy removal feature is a almost too easy, so I carry the fender with me after I lock up. Overall great and satisfactory product.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Doesn't move!, August 4, 2011
By Hodfrey
I had been skeptical of these type of fenders but the strap that goes around your seat post has rubber on the inside to keep the strap from moving.
I also put a ziptie around the head of the fender to make it harder for someone to steal it (saw quite a few posts saying these are stolen frequently). I live in downtown Boston and ride everywhere, no skunk stripes and it never needs to be adjusted.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great fender to slap on when there's a little bit of rain, July 2, 2011
By dougneb (Omaha, NE USA)
Bought this for my Merlin road bike on commute days when there's light rain or a chance of rain in the afternoon. Quick and easy mount. Would hit the tire when I went over a bump until I tightened the screw. Fits in my backpack (top sticks out) when I don't need it anymore. Does a sufficient job of preventing water from getting on my backside. I have recommended it to fellow cyclists.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great, lightweight design, May 26, 2011
By blanx
This fender takes just a few seconds to attach or detach, yet stays put extremely well on the seat post once affixed. Since it's made of plastic, it is very light. It's definitely wide enough to keep my back clean from a rear road tire.

The only caveat is that it is extremely easy to steal. There is practically no way to keep this secure on a parked bike; you need to detach it and take it with you.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Funtional and Stylish, May 12, 2011
By Cyclekrazy
I purchased this about a month ago for my trek hybrid, and it works great.
easy installation "so easy, even a cavemann could do it". I purchased it in white.
and the best part is its easy to clean after a ride especially after all the rain we've been gitting, just lift and wipe. plus i don't have to walk around with dirt splash stipes & splatter on the back of my shorts & shirts, as if I never learned to wipe or had some explosive poo! nope just a Nice clean guy with his dorky helmet!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  great fender, April 27, 2011
By michael luostari
Im a bike commuter and Ive used it all winter and a few times this spring and it does an awesome job. I got sick of my bag and butt getting wet and this fender has worked perfectly. I can switch it between both of my bikes super easily. Ive heard a lot of people talking about how easy it is to steal... I live in a high theft area so being able to take it off when I'm at home has been actually been a plus in my situation.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  A poor, unreliable product, June 1, 2011
By J. Sanbonmatsu (Boston, MA USA)
Unfortunately, this product is completely unreliable. When it doesn't come loose and fall into the road--this has happened to me a number of times--it swivels as you go over bumps, which exposes your back to kicked-up debris and rain water. I don't know how SKS could have come up with this one.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Decent product for the price, April 28, 2011
By Hugh Foley (Australia)
I am happy with this product as it does what I bought it for (to stop the water!). However, I find that it does loosen easily and I need to tighten it often to stop it from rubbing on the tyre.

Apart from that, I am happy with the purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Keeps my butt dry, perfect!, February 10, 2011
By Andy
I was looking for a fender that I could snap on for those wet days commuting to class, and this is perfect!!

Keeps me dry, and easy to take on/off.

My only concern would be that someone would steal it off my bike when it's locked up...but after a year haven't had that happen so I that's good.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Fender: good protection from water, Fender: no protection from theft., November 15, 2010
By Liquidcrystalz
This fender is easy to install and easy to remove. It also provides good protection from sprays of water from the rear bicycle tire, as the angle can be adjusted to fit most trajectories of water from differing frame sizes. Note that I said it was easy to remove. Nothing prevented someone from unclipping my fender from the bike while it was locked up. I would recommend fender models that at least require a hex-wrench so that you are not the victim of opportunistic theft.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Dry and Clean, April 19, 2010
By J. Ransom (Stillwater, OK USA)
This fender does an amazing job. I have had one on my mountain bike for the past 3 years. I have never had water or mud make that nice dirt line up my back. It is easily adjustable and fits any bike (hard-tail or shock-absorbed). I acquired the one on my bike for free, but when my wife decided she needed one for hers, I had no hesitation purchasing the same model. The one thing that I don't like about the fender is the ease of removal. If you have to lock your bike up in a public place, someone can just walk by and take it. Although the designers of the product did do a good job of disguising the latch, so a casual passerby won't notice it, but someone who knows what it is can take it in less than 3 seconds.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Very limited and bulky, December 5, 2010
By waters
This review is from: SKS X-Tra Dry Rear Bicycle Fender (Black) (Sports)
I have a 26" standard mountain bike. I'm just under 5'5" and extended my seat as much as I could stand on my toes but this still will not fit, even after removing my necessary blinky light. I tried all possible adjustments, there are not many on this hunk of skinny plastic by the way. This will probably work with taller riders or different bikes. It looks stupid anyway. I got a much better one now.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  good solution for a tough problem, September 27, 2011
By solocanoe (fort smith, ar)
I like fenders...I'm old enough to remember when most all bikes had them...and they work wonderfully for keeping the crud off the bike's rider.

So I am now - sometimes -riding a big, comfy, fat-tired bike with no fenders and no braze ons for them. I don't ride this bike every day...but when I do want to (on the weekends for pleasure) I really don't want to worry about the weather. Not just "is it gonna rain?", but "has it?", etc...

I like to ride the cruiser for errands - even to get an adult beverage - so I'm not talking neon lycra clothes here...normal clothes and shoes...and I don't have to be the guy with a stripe on my back no matter what the weather is...or it was a few hours ago.

I zip tie the fender on so it doesn't get stolen...but I like it - and would buy it again.

I thought this was a great deal. Fender can be installed in a few seconds and removed just as quickly. I've kicked it a few times getting on and off the bike with no issues.Theft isn't an issue for me since I only use my bike for exercise and never park it anywhere besides in my garage.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  No more dirty behind, January 24, 2012
By HikingManiac
I had this product attached to my new bike, until the bike got stolen, this time again with my new bike I realized I can get same product for the half the price on Amazon, so i had to get it. I commute on my bike, so when it rains, I used to get a dirty behind and getting my backpack dirty, but with this adjustable device, my back has been dry and clean, trust me I had to ride in the rain several times this week (I only had this for 1 week...). It's easy to attach but at the same time easy to get stolen. I might need to fix it up so I can attach a lock or chain.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  nice fender, January 11, 2012
By Derek Vincent
This fender mounted in about 5 minutes and is doing a good job at keeping me dry on wet roads - the strap holds it reasonably tightly and it doesn't seem to move for normal riding but if you bump it while getting on or off the bike it moves fairly easily even with the strap and hardware tight so you need to check every once in a while to make sure it's where you want it. Re-adjustment by hand seems to set it right

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Doesn't completely shield your back from all rear tire moisture, May 11, 2012
By vtx3
Unfortunately this doesn't block all the water picked up from my rear mountain bike tire. Sure it blocks a considerable amount, but not all of it which defeats the purpose. Considering the extra width of this fender, if this one can't completely block all the water, then I don't know which fender set will.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Gets the job done well, but not without a couple flaws, March 21, 2012
By eolcott01
I bought this splash/mud guard for my mountain bike and it works very well in keeping my backside dry! However, there are a couple annoying things about it.

Pros: Easy to install
Keeps water from splashing up from the back tire
It has a joint that allows you adjust the angle

Cons: Easy to steal
The adjusting joint tends to fall down and hit the tire
I've accidentally kicked it when I swung my leg to get on the seat

I've been using it for riding around campus and after it rains. I've been having trouble with keeping my bottom dry when I ride my bike and I finally solved it with this guard! If you're worried about someone stealing it then it's easy enough to just remove it and put it back on when you need it again. The only thing about that is it's pretty big so you'd have to have a big bag or a backpack.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great prodcut, February 18, 2012

Easily adjustable for any size seat post, quick on and off and has been very durable for the past 4 months I've been using. Quiet, doesn't move once you have it attached(unless you kick or hit it then it may move a little) and best off all keeps you dry!! You can easily take it right off and carry in with your helmet if parking your bike somewhere that you are afraid it may be stolen.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Funtional and Stylish, May 12, 2011
By Scram with Sram! (Chicago)
