4.0 out of 5 stars.  So, how big is it?, June 14, 2009
By drefractor (Arizona)
To help visualize, the horizontal space of the main compartment of this trunk is big enough to tightly carry two plastic gallons of milk and there is a vertical separator panel with velcro ends to sort into 2 loads. The vertical space of the main compartment will allow the zipper to close with a milk container in the rear, but as the front slopes downward, there's not quite enough clearance in the front of the trunk for the top of the second milk container.

The side pocket space is pretty narrow due to the rigid molding which gives the bag a neat and trim appearance -- don't plan on putting anything much more than an inch wide if you want to be able to zipper close. Otherwise don't forget to bring a bungie cord or two (always a good idea) in which case the top of the pocket opens to about 5 inches before being held at that width by side expanders on the front and back. I would have rather had the rigid sides confined to the main compartment or had the side pockets otherwise engineered to zipper close around wider objects.

Plenty of places to strap the trunk down if you don't have a Topeak MTX bike rack, but it's pretty slick if you do have one. Just slide and go and use the included carrying strap if you want to use it as a small shopping carrier.

A bit pricey, but a nice product overall.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Great bag, watch out for bumps!, July 8, 2009
By S. Wohler (MD, USA)
This rack-mountable bag looks great and works very well. The rigid panels are especially nice, and I am able to keep important things in it when I ride, without worrying if they might get crushed.

The only think I would suggest, is that because the clip is in the front of the bag, and it slides in from the rear, keep an eye on it while riding. This is a silly design for the clip, as if the bag escapes, it will only go one direction, backwards! I was riding the other day, and sure enough, I hit a bump and didn't think to look back until a couple minutes later -- only to find the rider behind me carrying it as he approached. For the remainder of the ride, I had to lash a belt through the loops and to the seatpost. I can't imagine not noticing until I stopped! I would have lost a wallet and a cell phone. Needless to say, I was irritated.

So, my suggestion to Topeak would be to have it clip instead in the back (a horizontal clip that detents UP when the bag is slid in all the way, for instance). For anyone who has purchased this bag, be mindful of this, or use a cord at the front to make double sure you won't lose it.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great bag for commuting, March 20, 2010
By bike commuter (Huntsville, AL USA)
After bike-commuting to work for the last 3 years with a backpack to carry my clothes and lunch, etc., I was tired of my back sweating and my spine being thrown out of alignment from the weight of the backpack. After a lot of research, I decided to get this bag and its companion Topeak explorer rack. I carry a lot of stuff with me on my commute so it was important to have a large bag - this is one of the largest out there. It's not as spacious as my old backpack but it is adequate to carry everything I need it to. I wish it had velcro to fasten the mesh pockets because my cell phone and keys tend to pop out - after my keys plopped out one day on to the asphalt, I've since stored them in the bag's main compartment for safekeeping. I haven't used the bag on a rainy day yet but it seems like it is fairly water-resistant. The zippers are a bit wimpy making me skeptical of this bag holding up as well as my backpack did - be gentle when opening and closing the zippered compartments. I love the way it slides on and off the rack in seconds and the shoulder strap makes it convenient for carrying off-bike. Overall this bag and companion Topeak rack are the best solution I've seen for regular bike-commuting.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  The best I have owned, April 27, 2010
By Dog Lover (Minneapolis, MN, USA)
I bike a lot. I have probably owned 6-7 carrier bags. This is simply the best one yet. Other bags had individual features not contained in the Topeak MTX, but overall, this one is the winner. It is deceptively large. I am always amazed at how much stuff I can get into this bag. The two side pockets are rigid, but hold a lot of odds and ends. The main compartment has a Velcro divider, should you choose to use it. I divide mine about 20%/80%, with the 20% being in the front. I put small items and heavy stuff in the front 20%, with the 80% available for snacks, an extra shirt, maps, etc. There is a small internal pocket on the zip-top for a billfold, etc. There is also an external net-pocket and a tie-down cord on the top of the bag.

The only features where I would score one of my other bags higher are 1) one of my bags had a "secret" pocket for money, etc. that the Topeak does not offer, and 2) the zippered expansion area on the Topeak is not as large as on a couple of my other bags.

Lastly, if you get the matching Topeak seat-post rack, this bags just slides on and locks into place. It's a great system.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Sill using this bag 1 year later, January 17, 2010
By T Durden
Great bag. You might not be ablt to tell but the top of this bag even zips and unzips to give even more capacity. There are two top zippers, one closes the bag and the other gives more capacity, hope that makes sense. I love this bag. Slides on and off easily. I usually just leave it on my bike, though. I've never once had it slide off the bike.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Bag, April 18, 2009

I really like the stability of the rigid molded panels. Slide mount works great. The zip out expansion on the top helps if you have stuff to haul taller than the bag.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice bag. Made to work with Topeak rack or you buy velcro straps, February 21, 2011
By Found on Wikipedia
This bag is well contructed, a nice size, and goog looking. I rolled a regular size shower towel and put it inside the main compartment with 2 small bags of potatoes ships. May be I could had fit a small bottle of water too. That was all the space in the main compartment. In the side pockets I put a car keys, emergency medicine and others. The mesh pocket on top of the bag I love because I put my iphone in it (playing music) which I enjoyed through out my 2.5 hours ride. I hit bumps, turn fast on curbs and the iphone stay put in the pocket and I could hear the music clear and loud.

VERY IMPORTANT:
The bottom of the bag is made to fit only the Topeak bike rack. The bottom has a plastic square piece attached to the bag in the front and back corners. This plastic piece is made to slide the bag in the Topeak Rack using grooves. When I purchased the bag I didn't know that. My mistake I didn't read that part of the description. I have a regular rack. As I was ready to send the bag back to the company. I remembered I had 2 velcro straps long enough which a fished through the center of the bottom square piece to secure the bag to my rack. This worked great. The bag was very tight and it didn't move out of place when I used the bike. The only thing, it's not as easy to remove or put the bag on the rack as the Topeak rack that slide in and out, but I am not planning to remove the bag often so I can live with that.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  solid - should last a long time, October 17, 2010
By Martin Arrowsmith (desert southwest)
I bought this Topeak MTX Trunk Bag to replace my old MTX trunk bag. The old trunk bag performed its job admirably and lasted a little more than 5 years. I liked the old one and I like this one too. The rigid molded panels on this model seems as it will improve durability compared to the eearlier soft-sided model I had, but it doesn't SEEM to hold as big of items as my earlier model. The beam rack system from Topeak that this trunk bag uses is functional and outstanding. Overall, 2 thumbs up.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Bag!, September 12, 2009
By weaver-k (Atlanta, GA)
This is an awesome bag, even for just the casual rider. I can fit all kinds of stuff in it. It fits all the junk we take on family bike rides (or in the past wish we could take on the rides.) It is very sturdy and easy to get on and off the rack! Also, I think it is important to note that my bike is a 16 inch "small" size women's comfort bike and the bag does not sit up too high behind my seat. I am so glad I got this bag. I can't imagine having to use a bag that is smaller for my family of 3! Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Bike Bag, July 6, 2009

This trunk bag is as nearly perfect as it can get. No straps to fool with, it slides effortlessly into the Topeak dedicated receiving rack. The rigid molded side panels keep the bag true to its original form. It's worth every cent!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice Bag, July 25, 2008
By Pedro I. Alcocer
I installed this trunk bag along with a Topeak Explorer rear rack on a Specialized Allez 2008 road bike. I was afraid this bag was going to look overwhelming on the bike but it's the perfect size. Also, the rear rack & bag are not heavy but the bag seems tough & strong. I love how it slides off & on the rear rack. I'm very happy with the whole setup, on a road bike even!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Best Buy for My Needs, July 8, 2011
By James
Brought this pocduct along with Topeak Explorer Tubular Rack (w/o Spring) and Topeak TourGuide Handlebar Bag DX. I have been nothing but pleased with the use of this product. I have an 8 to 12 mile commute to and from work. I have tried my best to find something wrong with any of my Topeak products. Still searching. For me, they have performed better than some of the the negative reviews I read.

I carry work clothes (pants, shirt, under garments, socks, belt) in one pannier. The other pannier holds shoes, swimmers towel, body sponge, soap, and deodorant. I still have room for my laptop and have carried a small quanity of groceries. (liter of soda, bag of bagels,2 cans of tuna, and 2 cups of yogart) in one of the panniers.

In the expandable top portion of the of the bag, I carry my tool pouch, diabetes bag and supplies, rain jacket, cell phone, and wallet and still have room for more items.

In the top outer portion I carry a newspaper, energy bars and a plastic bags of Gatorade.

I have ridden in the rain and the the rain cover kept contents of bag and items in bag completely dry. I highly recommend purchasing this item

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent product, great value, July 2, 2011
By Steven
Excellent product. I was a bit leary about paying that much for trunk but it is a great product. I read a review that said this trunk would hold a 5 gal milk jug and a 6 packif cans ... to spare. Right size for short overnight trips and is light enough empty that I keep it on my bike all ge time.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great commuting bag, June 8, 2011
By Goodtime Island
The bag is perfect for my work commute. Not quite enough space for shoes AND clothes, but plenty of room for shirt/pants along with toiletries, wallet/keys, etc. The expandable top is easy to use, and gives you a little extra room. There are side pockets on each side, but they are pretty rigid so you can really only fit items that are smaller than 3-4 inches in width; sunglasses case fits perfectly. Around 5 miles of my commute is on a gravel road, and the bag is very secure on the rack--no wobbling. I love being able to slide the bag right off the matching rack when I get to work--so much easier than using bungee cords!

If this trunk bag didn't rattle when you ride, it would be a perfect product for me. It has room for everything I need and slides in and out easily. It does rattle over every small bump, and I can't seem to pad it to stop it.

Well constructed. I had an idea that this might work with my biking expeditions but it doesn't hold much, the side compartments are ridgid. I'll keep my basket, thank you. Nice looking bag if that is what is important.
