5.0 out of 5 stars.  Everything I was hoping for in a child seat., August 16, 2008
By Just a Guy (Tacoma, WA United States)
My wife and I wanted a child seat that would work on my mountain bike with disc brakes. This rack/seat combination has worked perfectly! The variety of extension brackets included make this rack simple to install on any frame with the pre-drilled mounting holes. All you need is an allen wrench, a screwdriver and a pair of pliers or small crescent wrench. It will also work on a standard (i.e. caliper brake) frame, so why not buy this one in case you decide to go with a disc brake bike in the future? It's big enough for our "oversized" toddler to ride in comfort as well. He loves it, we love it, and we would absolutely recommend it to anyone who's looking for a good child bike seat. It's difficult to find (we came to Amazon after being told we'd have to special order it at REI and pay $45 more). Great product.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  UNSAFE! And bad customer service, August 2, 2010
By J. T. Klein (Oakland, CA)
I chose this bike seat because it looked safe, and convenient. Well after the bike having one small fall the plastic clasps that keep the child in place broke instantaneously. Yes thats right, so the bike fell over the clasp broke (making the 3 point harness unusable - child fell through the seat and was choked by the strap around neck. Thank goodness we had a helmet on - and no scratches on the kid (amazingly) but he was forcefully chocked.

This and of itself is enough to make me suggest that you should not buy this item however their customer support was not helpful either. When I spoke to them about the situation they directed me on where I could buy a replacement part. I think this is poor customer service - my concern was first SAFETY. I don't know if I'll do this again. I'm seriously investigating trailers. However, I would have expected that they offer a replacement part free of charge.

Obviously, one hopes the bike never falls over - however when it does you expect it to work. This failed.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  THIS IS THE OLD VERSION, April 7, 2009
By someguy
This is the old version of the seat. The rack is NOT MTX compatible, unlike the product description at the manufacturer's website. In addition, this has a lower weight limit. I'm really bummed I got this.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Topeak Baby Bike Seat, March 27, 2009
By eljaydubs (Central New Jersey)
I received this about a week ago and last night finally worked up the courage to install it (it was pretty intimidating for someone who doesn't know much about tools)! I don't have disc brakes but the disc-mount version works on either type and plus was the same price. Two hours and a trip to the hardware store later, I think the seat is about as secure as it's gonna get (it feels solid as a rock-very secure and very safe looking). One thing that bothered me though was that the allen wrench needed wasn't included in the box (luckily my next store neighbor had one). The instructions, to me, could have been a little more helpful, but I finally (I think!) figured it out correctly. (Another thing that is bothering me-I don't know why it says you need a screwdriver! I never used one...it seems fine but I will definitely get this checked out by my local bike shop before I use it.) The reason for the trip to the hardware store was that the two longer screws needed for one part of the seat weren't long enough (they were M5 x L25...I bought M5 x L30 and they were perfect). We haven't tried the seat out yet but it looks super comfortable and safe. Once the initial installation is done, it seems great. (My local bike shop said they would install for $25, but I figured I'd try it myself.) All in all, seems like a great product-I'll update if I have any problems after our ride today, but my son seemed to love it during our test-sit and looked snug as a bug in there. 4 stars only because of the installation snags I mentioned earlier.
**UPDATE**
I've been using this for about a week now and my son and I absolutely love it. Have had zero problems so far and I am glad that after (much) deliberation on the kind and brand of bike seat to get, I finally decided on this one. A great quality seat, my son is very comfortable and it's very easy for me to use. Would definitely recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Very happy, November 11, 2008
By bastafidli (Charlottesville, VA United States)
Even though my bike doesn't have a disc breaks I got this model to future proof my investment. It took me about 2 hours to install the seat, bike stand and rearview mirror (which I have purchased separately). The supplied instructions are pretty good and all the supplied parts fit together very well. I have used this seat couple of times so far with very good experience for both, the rider and the passenger :-). It is easy to put the baby in and out of it. The straps work very well to hold him in the seat. We have not used the foot straps since it seemed uncomfortable to prevent any movement and the way the seat is positioned on the bike and the shape of the foot rests it is hard to put his feet into the wheel. The seat seems to protect the passenger very well and we had a blast with it. I especially like that having him right behind me allows us to talk and share the experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Love them and would recommend to my friends!, August 4, 2009
By CJ (Fullerton, CA)
Note: I am not an avid bicyclist. I just love to go for a beach ride or trail ride with the kiddos. Everyone asks us about our bike seat and I recommend them. My sweet hubby had no trouble getting them on our bikes, and after a year and a half of owning them they are still in perfect condition. The suspension is what stands out the most!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great child seat, July 13, 2009
By P. Blanton
I bought this child seat after a using a similar seat on a vacation in Belgium and my son has really loved it. Riding in this seat is one of his favorite activities and he constantly points toward the bike whenever we pass it in the garage. This is easily some of the best money that we've ever spent on a child product as it allows me to exercise while giving my son enjoyment at the same time. I initially thought a trailer would be best but then saw how much he enjoyed the behind the saddle seat in Belgium and changed my mind. We now have a rack on two bikes and can easily transfer the seat to either bike. I can't speak for the shock system since I've never actually ridden in the seat. My only small complaint is that the padding on the seat does not stay in place very well but this mainly due to the fact that it must come off in order to adjust straps as your child grows. My son started riding in this at 9 months and I'm hoping that he can continue using it until he's at least 3. If you enjoy biking or are looking to exercise with your child, I would highly recommend this seat!

WARNING - Topeak has recently changed this product so that the rack can also accommodate their MTX line of trunk bags in addition to the child seat. However the new models are not at all compatible with the old models which are still for sale. Check the Topeak website to compare model numbers and make sure that you get the new model if you do not already own the old one as the trunk bag feature adds even more value.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  AWESOME SEAT, June 10, 2009
By Tiffani A. Frost
I bought this exact Topeak child seat at a local Bicycle Shop. The instructions left MUCH to be desired, in my opinion, as far as step-by-step instructions go. It did not require many tools but, buyer beware: you HAVE to have a bike that has the extra built in mounting holes under the seat adjuster! I did not know this when I purchased this seat, and my bike didn't have that extra mounting area under the seat and it made it MUCH harder to attatch in that area. However, with the help of my great neighbor, it is now installed on my bike and I really like it! My 30+lb. 2yr old daughter LOVES it, and seems very comfortable in it! The padding is great and along with the springs is one of the main reasons I bought this one. Others don't have as good/much padding for the child, and I found her saying "owe" while using other child seats when going over a curb. Aside from the instructions I give this seat a thumbs up!!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Great seat - but flimsy and no parts available, May 4, 2010
By Ads (UK)
The seat is great, fits well easy to use.

BUT - the foot stirups are flimsy and it did not take much for my son to knock it off and once it is broken there are no spare parts available so you may as well through the seat away.
Rubbish!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Keeps the kids on the bike, October 29, 2010
By Michael A. Croese (fernandina beach, FL)
Nice child seat bike. Took about an hour to assemble if you have all the right tools at your disposal. My little ones love it so just get it. You can take it off when you are riding it with without a child so you don't look so strange.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Love it, September 15, 2010
By Stephen
I used this seat about 10 times this summer and enjoy the freedom. It took a few rides for my 1 year old to get accustomed to it but now he enjoys it. There is plenty of room for his helmet when I bent the attachments as indicated by the instructions. I also like how it has springs so that the bumps are cushioned and the seat seems to wrap around them. Admittedly, the bike high sided at a stop light and my child was totally unscathed. If safety is your priority, this is a great match.

I wanted a bike seat that was comfortable for me and my son, this is the perfect product. He sits comfortably and safely; he loves it and so do I. I recommend this product for other parents, especially for those who have disc brakes on their bike.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great!, February 6, 2010
By smiley (Ringwood, NJ USA)
At first, our daughter (1 1/2 yo) was a little afraid, but she quickly got used to it, and then she started loving it! it's very well made, and easy to use, too. And, when riding our bikes last fall, in a NJ park, we saw many other people having the same seat for their children, as well.

Name of Product: Topeak Babyseat(tm) II Bicycle Carrier Seats

Units: About 40,000

Importer: Todson Inc., of North Attleboro, Mass.

Hazard: A child can place his or her fingers in the opening at the grab bar's hinge mechanism. When the consumer lifts the grab bar to remove the child from the seat, the child's fingertips can be caught in the hinge mechanism, posing a laceration and fingertip amputation hazard to the child.

The gray, plastic Babyseats were sold in three styles: Babyseat, Babyseat with disc brake compatible rack and Babyseat with non-disc brake compatible rack. The racks are used to mount the seat to the bicycle. "Topeak" is embossed on the back of the seat and is also printed on a black foam protector that covers the grab bar. A red locking lever on the side of the blue grab bar locks the bar into place.

Sold at: J&B Imports, REI, Action and Hawley, independent bicycle dealers, distributors and other retail stores nationwide and online at REI.com from January 2009 through April 2012 for between $140 and $180.

Manufactured in: Taiwan

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled carrier seats and contact Todson to receive a free hinge cover retrofit kit.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great seat/bike rack needs to patience, August 14, 2011
By Dad (So Cal)
This seat is great, my son has been riding on it and enjoys the ride. He is 18 months and weights about 27 pounds and the only issue is that my foot hits his foot on the back swing while pedaling. I have adjusted this by placing my feet on the pedals closer to the middle of my foot, this takes time to get used to but is a small compromise, also a big improvement since he graduated to the back seat from the In Step puller that he has been using for the last year.

I read all the reviews prior to buying this seat and most of them state that the instructions are lousy and that it takes a long time to install the bike seat. What they are talking about is the bike rack that comes with this seat. I was able to install the bike rack in about an hour, taking my time and making sure to use all the correct nuts and bolts, this extra precaution was only taken because of the safety issue as I would not have done so if it was only to lug around my gym bag. That being said, if you enjoy working on your bike and have some decent bike specific tools, you will find the installation relatively modest.

I HIGHLY URGE THE NON-MECHANICALLY INCLINED TO TAKE THE SEAT TO THE LOCAL BIKE SHOP AND PAY THE 20 BUCKS TO INSTALL IT. A BIKE SHOP WILL DO IT IN 20 MINUTES AND WILL DO IT CORRECTLY.

Great seat, very stable, going to Yosemite in a few weeks to give it the full treatment, I will check back in after that.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  great product, July 11, 2011
By agypsy (New York City)
we bought this for our 13mo daughter. this is our first experience with a baby seat for a bicycle and we couldn't be happier. i can't compare this with other seats but this seems to be good quality and our baby loves to ride with us.

installation took about 30mins and should be simple enough for anyone with common sense. we got the "disc mount version" or "DMV" rear rack that the seat rests on. but the DMV version fits to the regular non DMV bikes as well. it comes with all the hardware to fit most models of bikes with 3 different lengths of rails for.

a bit on the pricey side but after our research we feel its a good buy..

5.0 out of 5 stars.  My son feels safe! and Im loving it!, May 22, 2011
By Stemichoi
My son is 2 and has this fear of being in high unstable situations ,(swings, etc) At first he was absolutly terrified because it wiggled while we were in the stopped position...( I reccomend having two people during child loading or useing a fence to wedge the front tire in) but as soon as we got going he was fine! I've taken this on the road and on trails through our national park. The shocks really help with bouncy trails..which sadley is my sons FAVORITE part. The most complicated part of bulding is the mounting bracket. I had to have my brother in law install that because I was LOST. But once the mounting bracket is attached the seat comes on and off easy. If your worried about the harness.. Dont be..I was concerned with the fact that my son had learned to undue buckles and didnt want him doing that while in the car seat.. These buckles can be a struggle for an adult and my son is not able to unlatch it. I love that the seat itself is not screwed down to the bike , makes traveling on the car ALOT easier!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  great baby seat!, May 21, 2009
By Keegans mom... (CT)
I love this baby seat. My little one is 7 months old and just started riding on the back of my mountain bike with me he is a bit small for the seat and can not yet get his feet into the adjustable foot rests. I had my local bike shop install it for me to be sure it was installed properly they did it for no charge. It is really easy to take off and put on the bike. The shocks on it really make for a smooth ride even on bumpy roads/trails. I am very glad I chose this seat as opposed to the trailers...

5.0 out of 5 stars.  child bike seat, May 8, 2012
By Don H. Goodrich
Everything about this child's bike seat was good. The initial installation of the rack was clearly explained. It is solidly connected to my bike. The seat itself can easily be placed on or removed from the rack. When on the bike it is very sturdy. The seat itself is totally protective of the child with a high back, numerous belts to keep the child in place and comfortable. It is also nicely padded and reclines .
I would highly recommend this product.
