4.0 out of 5 stars.  Topeak DeFender M1 (front) fender, March 18, 2008
By A. Thomas (Washington DC)
I got this and the M2 (rear) fender to keep mud and water off me on rainy days for my commute.

The installation is a piece of cake -- just plug the diagonally-split cylinder into your fork, and tighten the Allen head bolt to compress it. The front and back parts literally snap right on. The soft tips are nice for when you bump into stuff; helps keep 'em from snapping.

Although I think these are great-quality, I *did* encounter an issue with the M1. It broke at the mount on the first day I had it. The customer service at Topeak is awesome though, and I got a replacement part in 2 days! I've been using the new one for several weeks now, and no problems!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  functional and stylish, January 13, 2008
By Aaron T. Bagby
I am very pleased with the design, weight and functionality of this and the rear fender of the same branding. I've hit the trails and roads with these on and it keeps both the rain and mud off your clothes while allowing a wide range of adjustment angles to accommodate different frames, tire sizes, etc. That and they are easy to remove for cleaning and storage. I highly recommend these products and am sold on the Topeak brand in general - good stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  What a Great Design, February 24, 2009
By S. Kovarik (Eugene, OR USA)
I looked at all of the fenders on the market when outfitting my new Fuji Patrol bike, and these seemed to get pretty decent reviews and definitely had the look I was going for. My experience is as follows:

Ease of Installation: 5 of 5
Durability: 4 of 5 (so far, so good - they really seem like they will last, on or off road)
Looks: 6 of 5 (these make my bike look just plain mean)
Function: 5 of 5 (no rainwater in my face whatsoever, even in a full-on downpour)
Value: 5 of 5 (even if they break in a year or 2, what is another $15?)

Definitely the slickest fender I've seen. If you have a hybrid or mountain bike, this fender is the ticket! I'm not sure if the look would work as well for a cruiser or road bike, but on the more aggressive looking bikes, they look just plain awesome. My personal feeling is that getting there is first priority, but getting there in style is a close second. Style galore on the right bike!

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Fatigue-prone Design, May 13, 2009
By davethewave (Bellingham, WA USA)
The fender was fine while it lasted...But it only lasted for about 10 rides and then fatigue-cracked at the plastic mounting bracket. The fender fell off and is now worthless - $20 down the drain. Fender should be beefier at the mounting point. Do not buy!!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Does what I bought it to do., January 13, 2011
By m.d.
I purchased this fender for the purpose of commuting. I have a Stumpjumper that doesn't have braze-ons to mount fenders, so this was just what I needed to fit my rig. I've had this fender for about two months, and have had a good handful of opportunities to ride with them in wet conditions, mostly melting/slushy snow on roads. I would say it performs as I expected it to.

Since this is not a full-coverage fender, there is still a bit of spray that will hit the frame, fork, and maybe your legs (below the knee) and shoes. But, my bike is clean from the fender up. I don't have spray in my face, soaking my headlight, etc.

The mounting is a sort of tension set-up, actuated by an allen bolt. It has two general sizes that adjust for different size steerer tubes. It's simple and stays put. I do believe, though, that this model is meant to be mounted on suspension forks; a friend bought the same fender for his rigid and didn't have clearance to fit the fender.

Both sections remove easily, leaving the mount in the fork. So, if you want to ride without the fender, that's possible without tools; it comes off and snaps on very easily.

I chose this over a similar SKS model that didn't seem to have good reviews and was twice as expensive and a bunch of cheaper models that looked...cheap. It has a good rigidity to it. Some of the fenders I handled at stores were just flimsy; this one is definitely not flimsy. So far, I've found this a fender well-worth the money. It does just what I wanted it to do. I also have the DeFender for the rear, which works equally as well.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  flimsy little thing, August 17, 2009
By still learning (Anchorage)
It was a good idea in theory- fits most forks, easy to take on and off- but in practice, this fender is basically just a flimsy piece of plastic. It snapped off the first time I tried to take it off of my bike (which was the day after I put it on). Although I like Topeak products, I would be hesitant to recommend this particular fender.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Perfect Purchase, June 7, 2009
By Trollnor
Quick to install (just screw the plastic bolt into your forks) and quick to take off and put on (front and back slide on and off with a simple press of a button).

Only issue I could see was that the fender may not be able to take much of a beating due to it (and all the joints) being made out of plastic.

Used it on two 18 mile trips and was so glad to have it.

Worth the price.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Mounting Issues, April 8, 2011
By Logo
Great purchasing process, quick shipment. Fender is finally on the bike and seems to be working well after a retro-fit. The wedge clamp did not fit in the bikes fork tube and I had to perform some major grinding to the larger diameter clamp. The smaller size clamp was too small and would not hold the fender properly. Not a real big deal, took about 1/2 hour to grind it to the proper diameter and 2 minutes to install. I recommend you check your fork tube diameter before you purchase it and make sure it is compatible to manufacturer's specifications.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Not rugged, March 4, 2011
By Hayshaker (San Francisco, CA United States)
If you never hit a bump this might be a good fender but I've now broken 3 of these and have given up on them. (I'm a clearly a slow learner)

The last one I bought broke 10 minutes into my first ride after I went off a 2 foot jump. When I landed the front part of the fender snapped off.

While my riding partner thought it was very funny it didn't make me too happy.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  DO NOT BUY, DOES NOT WORK, February 14, 2011
By forhakim
It is well-made, in that the manufacturing quality is good. The reason I do not recommend this product, though, is that it is very ill-conceived. See the picture of a close-up of the attachment mechanism. There is an expandable-joint that fits upwards and into the opening of the front handlebar fork from the bottom. In practice, this attachment just does not work. Moderate bumps, such as those when you ride the bike off a 1-inch drop, cause the thing to simply fall off. I bought two of these fenders for my two bikes, and ended up returning both. It is a badly engineered product. Save your money. I am looking for something else with a better mechanism.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Doesn't stay center, require frequent tightening, reduce shock abortion distance, July 16, 2010
By J. Day (New Jersey)
I bought this to convert my mountain bike to a commute bike hoping I can keep my shirt and tie clean by the time I reach the office. I rode it a couple of times after heavy rain on wet road and it does keep the water and dirt off me relatively well as a fender suppose to do.

The part I am disappointed is how it doesn't hold center and require frequent tightening after a few bumpy rides. I am afraid to over tighten it because it is held under the steering bracket by couple plastic pieces and a screw. It would work much better if it has some type of aluminum or alloy bracket.

The bracket also reduces the shock aborter travel distance by about 1.5 cm, this may not sound like a lot but on my bike it hits the top of the v-brake bracket every time I put some extra push on the pedal, especially on uphill ride or when I hit a speed bump. Although it does not hinder the brake function, after a mile of uphill ride and the fender knocking against the bracket I was not a happy rider at the end of the trip.

Their concept of easy removal when you want to get mud in your face is nice, but their mounting design just too flimsy to hold it on the bike, even just for the pave road.

Look for something else if you are looking for a fender on a mountain bike.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Keeps the water down, but broke after 2 months of commuting, January 11, 2012
By RLD
This product worked very well for the first two months. However, during my morning commute that consists of all paved roads and bike trails, the front portion snapped-off when I hit a small transition (rise) between the road and the bike trail. My bike has front suspension, so the bump is dampened sustantially. These fenders have only been used for my daily commute to work. They have not been damaged in any way. No accidents, no bumping into bike racks, nothing that would have otherwise weakened the fender. I would not recommend this fender because of what appears to be a significant design or material problem.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Had to return - couldn't install, April 27, 2011
By Detailed Reviews (Inland Northwest)
The hole in my fork was the right size, but the way it was welded left a tiny portion of the hole blocked, so couldn't insert the fender's mounting section. Due to the design, the hole has to be perfectly round or the mounting piece will not engage properly/snugly even you can get it to fit inside the hole. Had to return it. Wish the item description for this product was more detailed so that we could better judge whether or not it will fit our bike before we purchase. Gave it three stars because couldn't install it so couldn't judge it, but was not please with the limitations on installation and what I felt to be the lack of clear description. Wish we had the option of selecting "Don't know" instead of having to choose stars!

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Defender M1 Bike Fender - Good until it breaks, April 21, 2011
By JPinTO
I'm on my fourth M1 fender, they are cheap and readily available so I keep buying them. The plastic is very cheap at a critical spot and any small impact there breaks the unit. At least they are cheap.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Poor mount, March 28, 2011
By Bob (East Coast, US)
I really wanted to like this fender, it looks good and the engineering seemed sound. My problems started with the fork tube mount; it periodically fell out while riding, eventually I had to crank it so tight the set screw was bent by the force. The end came this winter on a cold day, the plastic part of the mount snapped as I went over a rough road, not even really pounding on a trail.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  DeFender M1 Didn't Fit Son's or Wife's Bike, March 6, 2011
By MDG225
I purchased the ToPeak DeFender M1 front fork fender due to the very good reviews on Amazon. Unfortunately it does not fit my son's nor my wife's Schwinn bicycle forks. My wife's is a 26 " Schwinn Ranger mountain bike and my son's is a 24" Ranger mountain bike. Both have suspension forks and the DeFender M1 mounting piece it too big or too small (using only the small adapter) to secure the mount. Very dissapointing. Now I'm too late to return it too.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Works well, but is broken easily, February 13, 2011
By KRS (Denton, TX)
This fender works great but we have had to buy replacements several times because of breaks when falling. I understand it is just a little piece of plastic but the product claims to be break resistant and I do not plan to treat my bike like it is made of glass.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Very delicate., February 10, 2011
By iThrow (Omaha, NE USA)
First night I had this fender, was being careful of the the parts and reading the directions. After tightening I noticed the one set screw was completely bent, making it impossible to loosen/tighten the adapter anymore, and therefore rendering the entire fender useless.

It may look like a nice piece, but Topeak has some refining to do to make this product more durable. Will not buy it again.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  OK while it lasted, January 27, 2011
By Brasewel Noronha (King of Prussia, PA)
I seemed to be one of the unlucky ones where it wouldn't fit in my bicycle fork. Had to use a couple of cable ties to keep it in place. Worked for a few rides before it broke at the mounting point. I would suggest getting something else. Instead of junking it, I used a couple of cable ties to tie it onto the bike front and down tube. Works alright as an interim solution.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Rain Flaps, May 20, 2010
By JBM-V.O. (Reading, PA)
I'm the idiot who puts it on my suspension fork... i hit a root going downhill at about 30pmh, it bottomed out my shocks- It was kind of cool watching my new fender float near my face as I race away. I was REALLY tempted to buy another one- Its fairly simple to install, looks rugged ( for as good as a cheasy bike fender can look) but gets the job done it rain, and on the trails. Love the quick release- and works well with the rear fender.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  good looking, perfect MTB fender for the price, May 16, 2010
By Kit Chan
IMO this is the best looking fender out there. Price is right and the quality is superb.

Pro:
Detachable, Flexible materials and yet durable, the bottom of the mounting piece is reinforced by metal, will fit with most of the shocks out there because it comes with 2 mounting pieces in different size.

Cons:
None!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent bike fender, May 1, 2010
By osquro (Colombia, South America)
I use a TREK 4300 for daily commuting. I friend bought a set of Serfas fenders but Topeak M1 is quite better.

Great aerodynamic design, I was afraid it makes my bike look older but now I'm not planning to remove it ever. Serfas fenders don't look that good.

Good materials: Durable black plastic. The gray parts you see in the picture are soft transparent nylon borders. Serfas fenders seem weaker than Topeak M1.

Easy to install: You can remove front and rear the parts just pushing a button. Serfas fenders have to be removed completely.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Breaks way too easy., April 3, 2010
By SkippinZ (Worldwide)
I have the same complaint as the rest, mine broke right at mounting point, except I made the mistake of replacing it with another one and guess what...it broke in the same place too on the first ride. I would say that if you are looking for a fender for a commuter bike, this one would work, but two of them broke while doing light trail riding. Topeak should change the name to something other than mountain bike fender.

I have had to update this to a one star item. Topeak was most apologetic, I love their gear, so they sent me a third replacement. I set my bike very gently onto its side to take a drink of water while trail riding. When I picked her back up, guess what was lieing there on the ground. Yep, it broke in the same exact spot. The product is not strong enough for even light trail riding. Do not buy this fender.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Fits Perfect, February 22, 2010
By J. Everett (Texas)
I first bought the Topeak DeFender M2 Mountain Bike Fender (Rear), it looked and worked so good decided to order the front as well. Looks great as well as a perfect fit on my Specialized P1 All Mountain Disc. Installation was a snap, love the feature of being able to remove fenders, but still leaving mounting bracket installed. Would definitely recommend to anyone!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars.  It's only alright, December 2, 2009
By Todd (Portland, OR)
I put this on my bike after fighting with the expansion nut that came stripped out. I got it fix up started down the street and it was slightly off center to I reached down to put it back over the center of the tire and it snapped in two. I'm not really sure if this was just a junk one from the start or not. The concept seems sound but the materials have to be able to hold up from the bike falling, light crashes. I would not have thought it would have broke with simple pressure from my hand.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Buy it, but don't treat it as a King Kong., February 9, 2009
By Chang Shing-Shen (Seattle, WA USA)
This is my second pair. The reason why I need to buy a second pair is because the conjunction part between each defender broke when I was failed to go up a dirt hill. Even though, I still love this defender. It can do all you want to, and you can just take it off if you need to. But remember it's a kind of weak, so don't give it hard time if you don't bother.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Great look and work great, but 3 sets in less than 6 months..., December 31, 2008
By Raymond L. Heinzen III (Bellingham, WA USA)
I love the look and they work great when they're attached. The first front broke before I even had a chance to use it taking it of my bike rack. The aft section of the front fender snapped off when it snagged on the latch of the rack. I put it in the car and went up the hill. On my way down I got too close to a pine tree branch and the rear one snapped off (and it wasn't a wipe-out). I thought it was my luck of the day and because people raved about them I bought 2 more sets. The second set stayed on my bike for about two weeks, but then it was tapped at the wrong angle or something (there wasn't much force) on the front rear section of the fender again it snapped. I put the last front one on and then a couple days later the rear one snapped in the same place the first rear one did. A couple of days ago I was hanging my bike onto its hook (ceiling corner of my living room) and my hand slipped on the rear section of the front fender, and it broke again. They have all broken at the same places. The front ones broke at the plastic tongue that the rear section of the fender slides into. The rear ones snapped at the plastic arm between the seatpost fastener and the fender itself. If these two parts were originally made from a sturdy aluminum alloy, or if Topeak offered them as replacement parts then I would jump at the chance to buy them again. I still have all 3 sets of the fenders themselves, which look brand-new still. Oh and I'm not a wild rider or anything, since my daughter accompanies me on bike outings, and she just turned 11. We just ride on the trails. Oh, and I don't like saying terrible things about Topeak. I use so much of their stuff and they are a top-notch brand.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Yep! They're good., December 20, 2008
By 2thman (Olympic Peninsula, WA USA)
I've been used to using Shock Board front fenders for years on my MTB. I do a fair amount of crashing and these fenders did not hold up well at all. About a year ago I switched to a Topeak front fender and was very pleased with it. I think it lasted a year of hard riding and only gradually got to the point that the attachments began to get loose and eventually broke. I ordered two of these DeFender M1's a few months ago and noticed immediately that the sliding attachments appear to be even more robust than the earlier Topeak I used. The lower model is about a buck cheaper, but I think the differential is probably money well spent for the M1. I have noticed that during crashes or when I bump the fender into hard objects, the plastic appears to be more flexible while at the same time retaining an accurate guidance and tight fit. With a sort of parabolic shape instead of parallel grooves, this sliding catch attachment mechanism would not intuitively appear to be as good as the standard attachment, but so far I've been impressed with performance. The only down side is that with my EPX Terrashark bike, the post with offset cam that mounts the whole assembly on the bike would not fit my stem. I was trying to figure out how to shave down the plastic cam cylinders but figured out that the post that was already in the stem from the previous Topeak fender was still functional and I coud use this to adapt the new fender to. All in all, it's the best front fender I've had and I'll keep using these. I'm optimistic that these two will last a long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  NICE!!!, October 24, 2008
By S. L. Faust (Riverside, CA)
I installed this fender in just a few minutes. It seems typical of Topeak products as it well designed, attractive and built to last. The fender simply snaps off and on as needed. It actually enhances the look of my bike so I plan to leave it on. I have been very impressed with Topeak products overall.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Perfect for every rider!, August 30, 2008
By Ryan Seelye (Charlevoix, MI)
This keeps most of the water off you if you ride on wet roads, but because they sit so far off of the tire, they leave some room for water to spray your legs. This is definitely a must have product if you want to keep dirt off of the underside of your bike and yourself. There are two detachable pieces and one piece that stays mounted into the fork. A few turns of an allen wrench and it's in place. It detaches very easily by pressing a button and pulling on the part you want to take off. The tips of the fender are made of a gel-like plastic and the rest of the fender is made of a harder plastic material.

I have owned this product for a few months now and have not had any worries about breaking it. It is very durable and you would have to try to break it. I am very happy with topeak products in general and would recommend this brand to anyone that wants accessories for their bicycle.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  GREAT FENDER, August 11, 2008
By N. MONTIJO (BOSTON, MA)
THIS PRODUCT WAS BETTER THAN I EXPECTED. I REALIZED HOW GOOD IT WAS WHEN I DROVE MY OTHER BIKE WHICH DIDN'T HAVE A FENDER. IT'S NOT ONLY GOOD FOR RAIN, MUD, PUDDLES, ETC. IT'S GREAT ON EVERYDAY TERRAIN. IT STOPS THE GRAINS OF SAND,PEBBLES, AND OTHER SMALL DEBRIS LIKE GLASS FROM KICKING UP INTO YOUR FACE. IT ALSO OFFERS PROTECTION FOR THE EYES AND EVEN KEEPS LESS DIRT/PEBBLES FROM POPPING INTO YOUR SHOES. I USED MY BIKE WITH AND WITH OUT THE FENDER AND NOTICED A BIG DIFFERENCE. THIS IS A GREAT CUSTOMIZATION FOR ANY MOUNTAIN BIKE THAT NOT ONLY LOOKS COOL BUT ALSO SERVES ITS PURPOSE. HAVE NOT HAD IT TOO LONG BUT SHOULD LAST A WHILE DUE TO ITS FLEXIBLE PLASTIC AND RUBBER PARTS. IT WAS ALSO EASY AND QUICK TO INSTALL. THIS FENDER ALSO HAS A QUICK RELEASE SYSTEM SO THAT YOU DON'T HAVE TO REMOVE THE WHOLE BASE TO ENSURE A PEACE OF MIND FROM SOMEONE STEALING IT WHEN YOU LOCK YOUR BIKE. I LIKED IT SO MUCH I ORDERED THE OTHER VERSION FOR MY OTHER BIKE SO THEY WOULDN'T LOOK THE SAME. NICE JOB TOPEAK.

The fender was shipped quickly. It was a bit tricky to install. I had to open up the ID of my fork with a round "rat tail" file to accept the Topeak attachment lug. It took about an hour, but eventually I was able to get the lug to fit. It is nice, and works well.

This was dead easy to fit and very clever design too. Took it out this morning on muddy track and it worked beautifully. Great value too.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Surprisingly well built bike Fender, September 22, 2011
By NF (NY)
This is a very well built fender. I was concerned about this order after hearing stories of it coming off on rides. Not the case here. I've taken my bike off curbs and have been riding at pretty high speeds and it's staying put. Keep in mind, I'm not taking 2' jumps, I am just an aggressive rider. It fit very snugly, well snug after I tightened the heck out of it, in the hole where the front handlebar tube meets the front fork. It's very light weight and the fenders(ie both front and back pieces) comes off with a simple push of a button. It's pretty stylish as well, makes my bike look more high end than it really is. It may be a bit early to say this but I highly recommend it. If it falls apart in the next 50+ miles, I will repost. But so far, a quality product.

". Perfect fit for my Montague Trooper. No streaks on my Front anymore. Not much more to say about a rear fender. Easy to install.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice design, did not fit, March 21, 2012
By Otterwan
There may have been more than one problem with this order. First, the item was open and obviously used when received. Second, it did not fit the stem of my bike. It was close, but it would have take a hammer to drive it in. The fact that it had been used and returned before I received may indicate that it was just a bad unit, or there could be some other problem. I still like the design, but I'm not going to risk ordering another one.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great fender, easy install, March 20, 2012
By Guido
Overall very pleased with the Topeak Defender M1. Easy to install, and the front and rear portions unclip easily if you don't need the fender. Easily center mounts to the fork with neat wedge design (two sizes for small or large ø 19.6~ø26 mm ~3/4-1"). I think it's made for suspesion fork bikes, but it fit my standard fork just fine. I did have to shave it down a little to get it to fit in, but even with that modification, it didn't take long to install.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Mountain Bike Front Fender, February 5, 2012
By jtdunc
Installs easy and keeps the mud and water off of my pants and face. I really like the flexible tips on the front and bottom of the fender just in case you turn hard and your foot catches it. Should be very durable for most riders.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  MTB Fenders, October 8, 2011
By Jimmy
I was kinda concerned about trying the M1 and M2 fender set out after hearing about them falling off and breaking, but I'm glad I did. So far, they have preformed great. They seem to be rubberized (not stiff) which seems to be a fundamental difference between my review/experience and those of negative reviewers. I have caught my pants on the rear fender and completely bent it up backwards, but it didn't crack or anything. The front fender stays in place too, even on some pretty intense trails. Overall, I am very pleased. I would definitely buy again.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  good looking, perfect MTB fender for the price, May 16, 2010
By KC (california)
IMO this is the best looking fender out there. Price is right and the quality is superb.

Pro:
Detachable, Flexible materials and yet durable, the bottom of the mounting piece is reinforced by metal, will fit with most of the shocks out there because it comes with 2 mounting pieces in different size.

Cons:
None!
