Hmmm, July 24, 2009

Seemed kind of like cheap plastic, so I bent the crap out of it trying to break it and it didnt so its not cheap plastic. Very light and will adjust to about anything. I bought it for a wierd water bottle that I have that is a tapper size. It wouldnt fit but anything else will. I am going to mount it as my secondary. Will also clamp down on non water bottle stuff in a pinch.

Well designed and lightweight., November 3, 2009

Pros: Great concept. Tension dialer at the bottom is a fantastic feature No rattling. Plastic parts nice help keep things quiet. Flexes a little so bottles can be pulled out with little struggle.
Cons The cage doesn't feel as beefy as it looks. (not a big complaint) I wish the cage could accept the larger liter sized bottles but it's too narrow. It fits normal bottles perfectly. Also grabs thin bottles (like a red bull can) quite well.
A solid 4 stars.

Fits all size bottles I have tried thus far. Although it might look less sturdy than the regular (metal) Modula Cage, it has the added benefit of not rattling if you use a metal water bottle (like I do).

Too small, August 1, 2010
By mtsnow (Johnson, KS USA)
|
|
I was quite surprised at how small this cage was when I first got it in the mail. Knowing it was adjustable, I was expecting it to extend enough to hold a large bottle - a 32 oz Powerade bottle is what I had in mind. To my chagrin, it wasn't really all that close. And while it doesn't adjust to a very big size, it does adjust to a ridiculously small size, so small that no water bottle I've ever seen would fit in it. I have found that the typical 1 liter bottle can be squeezed in, but it isn't going to be very easy to get it to slide in while riding. Certainly it would be much easier if it would open a little wider.
So this product loses points for not being able to extend far enough while at the same time drawing down to a size that is usable for nothing - but in the end I believe it will get the job done for me.

Adjustable?Not Enough., August 1, 2010
By cyclebrewer (MI)

Poor Design. I got this cage to replace an old bent to fit metal cage that my Camelbak pops out of once in a while.I must have misunderstood the point of an adjustable bottle cage.It only goes smaller than average(like kid or Barbie size), and not one bit larger???...because everyone needs to be able to carry LESS water when they're out riding, right? Seriously though, why make it adjustable if its not able to go larger and smaller. It doesn't fit any of the Camelbak bottles right, and I'm not buying a special bike bottle to fit in my janky cage.Waste of $6.Would send back if it weren't for the shipping. Will put it on a kids bike, or in garage sale.

Better adjustment mechanism than the regular Modula Cage, June 19, 2009
By trustedsince1996 (Temple City, CA United States)
|
|
Please notice this product did not come with any screws, but fortunately my bike (Ibex) already came with screws in the water bottle mount holes, so I don't have to purchase any and it easily installed in minutes. The adjustment mechanism on the cage is perfect - smooth, easy to turn, and ergonomic to deal with.
However, the actual cage is not as sturdy as I would like. I prefer the cage structure and materials quality of the regular Topeak Modula Cage Waterbottle Cage to this model, but the regular model's adjustment mechanism is not as easy to use as this all plastic model. Both are lightweight, with this all plastic model being 23g lighter (52g versus 75g). I am slightly concern about the durability of this all plastic model as it seemed to rattle and bend easier compare to the regular Modula Cage.
With everything considered, this is a reasonably priced product with a quick adjustment mechanism to fit all of your bottles.

Another good Topeak product, October 1, 2010
By 99DONALD (STRATFORD,CT)

I have owned this product since July 2010 & it has worked well over 150 miles per week over all types of roads & trails. It's easy to get the bottle in & out while riding. It's rugged for a plastic cage. I like plastic cages for their light weight & this is handier than most for its micro-adjustability giving the clamping power of springy metal cages. New 24 oz Polar water bottles have smaller diameters than before, this holds them well. People who expect Allen wrenches to be included with these are silly. My Trek & Specialized brand bikes use different size wrenches, should Topeak include a set of wrenches? Also, any halfway decent bike has the mounting screws included on the frame, no need to add to the expense for everyone & environmental impact by packing screws with each cage to please the gas pipe frame bike owners. The screw holes in the cage are countersunk as the should be so they don't contact the bottle! You're not able to carry a 2 gallon tub of Tide with this holder, it is meant for 24, 20oz standard or insulated water bottles with the added ability to hold typical 1/2 liter or less water, juice drinks etc.. The price has risen, but I would buy the Topeak again.

Good cage - for top of tube mount only, December 26, 2009
By George Mayhew
|
|
I like this cage. It is light weight, will hold a Polar Insulated bottle, and it does not rattle. It does not work well if mounted to the underside of a tube, though, especially with tall bottles. The retainer is not rigid, and it will flex under the weight of a full bottle.

Mounting hardware?, July 29, 2011
By classen23

Apparently it doesn't come with any form of mounting hardware, and I didn't know that or I wouldn't have bought it. I have a mountain bike that has never been equipped with a water bottle holder so it isn't like I can just set it on the existing brackets... Again, wish I would have known it didn't have a way to mount it up.

I like this water bottle cage, it is adjustable and it looks sleek and professional. However, I can only fit a small water bottle in it, and not a sport water bottle. Do NOT get this if you are going to put a sport water bottle in it. It will NOT fit.

Topeak Modula Cage EX Modified Shape Bicycle Waterbottle Cage, April 14, 2010

will fit standard size water bottles, NOT over-sized.
it holds my bell water bottle great.
but what i love about this cage is. you can throw a mountain dew 20oz or a bottle of water from the gas station, in there and adjust it and it will hold.
plus it wont scratch metal bottles, or rattle them to death..

i brought 3 of these as i tried to upgrade from my 'Entry Level' metal cages i purchased for my first bike. I recently rode in the 2011 NYC 5 Boro Bike Tour & my water bottles kept falling out these cages (which were attached to my bike seat) after every little bump i hit (and thats after i tightened the grip)...they look cool but save yourself a headache

Holds and doesn't squeak, May 27, 2011
By David (San Diego, CA)
|
|
First off you need to understand that this cage will not hold 1-liter bottles. But it will hold 24oz Polar insulated bottles like other users have mentioned. The best thing about it does not squeak and that the cage will hold smaller bottles great.
Just keep in mind that larger bottles may not fit. I decided on giving it five stars since it met all of my needs. On one trip when it got too hot I took off my sweater and the cage held that very well. I've uploaded an image to replicate the scenario.
I like this cage so much I will be purchasing a second one.

A bit misleading..., January 27, 2012
By Potato Mashing Fiend (NYC, NY)
|
|
I didn't realize this bottle doesn't come with a way to attach it to the bike. Maybe I'm just dumb? I'm guess I can just use zip-ties to put it on my bike without too much hassle, but it would be nice if it said anywhere on the page that you need to have the proper attachment screws ready to go. I probably would've bought something else WITH an attachment if I'd known. I also agree with reviews that it is really small. I can fit an average Poland Spring bottle in, but there's no way this thing would hold a bigger sports bottle. Not really convenient if you're going on a long ride.

I am a big fan of Topeak products and this cage worked out great for our tandem bike. We use standard width water bottled with a foam sleeve and this cage works great for that purpose since the sleeve adds to the width. Thanks again Topeak for another great product.

Holds 24 oz Polar Water Bottle, July 12, 2011
By Bobbilee (GA, USA)
|
|
This cage is perfect for my needs. I love the versatility of it accepting many size bottles including the 24 oz Polar water bottles. The only reason why this product received 4 stars instead of 5 was because there is nothing written on the information page to indicate that a mount was needed to be bought separately. I had originally assumed one came with it even though many reviews complained about missing screws -- now, I understand the missing screw issue is because there is no mount included. Since a product cannot be seen and explored before purchasing in this environment detailed descriptions of that product is very important. Overall, I am very pleased with the product.

All-plastic construction, seems sturdy enough, July 12, 2011
By Dingo (USA)
|
|
I picked up this cage for recreational use. The entire product is made of plastic, even down to the bolt and adjustment knob that holds the two halves together. It all seems sturdy enough for my purposes, but I'm not sure how well it would hold up to heavy use. The adjustment knob is not captive, so it should be kept tight to prevent it from working its way off by vibration. My bike frame has built-in mounting holes/screws, so installation was a breeze. No mounting hardware is included with the cage, so you should check your bike to make sure you have the necessary mount. For bikes without built-in mount, you'd need an adapter such as Topeak CageMount.

Holds securely; Works well with Topeak's Bike Pump, June 26, 2011
By khc
|
|
This is a great bottle holder for the average fitness/recreational cyclist.
I ride primarily for exercise & enjoyment, and this waterbottle cage works well for me. It will securely hold the common 16.9 oz/500ml plastic water bottle [which has a diameter of about 2 1/2 inches, and is about 7 1/2 inches tall]. When adjusted at its widest, the cage will hold my plastic 30 oz/850ml cylindrical-shaped bottle [diameter 2 15/16 inches, height 10 inches]. It's a bit difficult to pull or insert a tall, 3-inch wide bottle from the holder [the cage in on my down tube, and my top tube gets in the way], so I usually stop & dismount to drink.
This cage works well with the Topeak "Pocket Rocket Master Blaster" bike pump; I actually have the pump mounted upside-down, "toward" the frame [I have a new Schwinn, and the down tube is oblong-shaped]. The pump doesn't interfere with any water bottle.
The material is some type of high-impact plastic composite. It is quite flexible, and very sturdy, especially considering the thinness of construction.

Great value, unique design, November 8, 2010
By foreveryoung

|
Bought one for MTN bike, loved it and bought another for road bike. Amazes me that an adjustable design like this has taken so long for someone to think of and produce. The standard $5 steel or aluminum holder that has been around forever, and is still sold everywhere, is SO limited. They just don't fit well with the newer, larger bottles. These are perfect in comparison, to be able to torque them in (or out) to clinch the size of your bottle, is a godsend. The plastic does seem to be high enough quality, especially for the price. Would be nice if they would make other variations of this one, like even taller. Don't heed the complaints of other reviewers, it's common for bottle cages to not come with the mounting capscrews. That's a very minor issue, because this is the only cage like it on the market and was a long time coming. My LBS needs to carry these, I will eventually tell them. Highly recommended for all of you who have been frustrated by the terrible loose fit of aluminum walmart quality holders that turn the bottom of your bottles black.

Only Bottle-Holder I Need, August 10, 2010
By Rusty Spoons (North Jersey, USA)
|
|
Sure it's a plastic-molded bottle holder, but it's an extremely durable and adjustable plastic-molded bottle holder.
The adjustments allow you to hold something as small as a can of Redbull, but expands to be large enough to carry a huge water bottle.
Additionally, the plastic from which it is construed is notably tougher than you first expect.
It does a great job of keeping my water secure while I'm riding on the trails, not once has my bottle even come close to falling out.
For the price, you really can't go wrong here...

Only holds small bottles, April 26, 2011
By RunandDance (Middle GA)
|
|
I bought this because of the high reviews. I tried putting a regular half liter bottle of store bought water into it, but the annoyance is that it has a curved part at the top. Normal store bought bottles of water and cylindrical type water bottles don't lay flat in this. Don't buy nless you have a bottle with an indentation in it the same exact spot as this cage's top curve. I think I'm going to have to cut the top part off to make it work for me.
Update: WARNING: DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME. I took a propane torch to it and heated the top until I got it to lay flat. Now it looks and works just fine. Still 2 stars, though. I was in a bike shop looking at cages. They all have curves at the top. I tried one of the bike shop's water bottles in the cages and none fit. Could someone explain this to me, please?

DO NOT BUY!!!, April 20, 2012
By D. Williams (El Paso, TX USA)
|
|
At first glance this looks like a great product. It's got a nice design and it's adjustable. The problem is that the adjustment mechanism is flawed. It is adjusted by a screw that sits on the bottom of the cage. The cage has 2 pieces, one piece that connects to the bike and another piece that is connected to the first piece via the screw. While riding, the vibration of the road causes the screw to loosen. I am not sure how well it holds water bottles. I purchased 2 of these and put them on my bike. I took 2 short rides and did not take water bottles with me. On the first ride, a screw loosened and I lost a piece to one of the cages and on the 2nd ride I lost a piece to the other cage. 2 rides, 2 pieces lost = 2 unusable cages. Stay away and save your money.

Make sure your bike is compatible!, February 14, 2012
By Sandy Buchanan
|
|
Before purchasing this holder, ensure that your bicycle has the required bolts that can support this item. The reason I gave the product four stars is due to the lack of information. If this holder wasn't going to be compatible with every bike, why pretend it is? The packaging doesn't even allude to these mystery bolts, only that the product is only available in professional bike shops (which is nonsense, I pilfered it from Amazon).
There are 2 holes, approximately 2-3in apart, on the back of the holder intended to secure the piece to your bicycular contraption.
My bike is cheap and awesome, and was not included on the drawing board when Topeak designed the holder. With the exception of the zip-ties I have to use to hold this contraption on, the holder looks pretty nice. It did, in fact, hold my water bottle, so it's got that going for it.

By elvis (In The, Matrix)

Pros: Price, they do the job, easy installation (if your screws on the bike aren't rusted to the frame you're good to go).
Cons: None I can think of: The yellow adjustment screw wasn't made of gold / They weren't free
Other: Fit any bottle I threw at it so far, I haven't tried an extra large water bottle yet. Not sure if it'll fit that. Seem a little bit cheap (plastic) but strong plastic :)

it is light. and most cages this light are 3x more expensive. however, fully expanded, it fits a normal water bottle. so don't think this will hold a huge water bottle. the biggest water bottle is the normal water bottle you use. this is fine for me because that is all i use, but was expecting it to expand bigger.

Not for large bottles, March 19, 2011
By Diosmaya
|
|
Even adjusted to the bigger size you will have a hard time to get large bottles in it (and when you do, they are not very easy to take out and put back in, certainly not easy when you are riding the bike). Also if your bottle is very tall, it does not feel all that secure.
It feels cheap and flimsy, but it actually seems to hold off Ok. It is very light weight. Comes with no screws, so your bike has to have the already or you have to get your own. Because it was so cheap I debated between 3 or 4 stars.

Deceptive Description, April 7, 2012
By Clarity87
|
|
Every bike accessory I've purchased besides this one has come with an attachment piece to mount it to your bicycle. This company somehow came to the conclusion that it wasn't necessary to include one or that it was necessary to inform a buyer that it doesn't include a mount. I managed to attach it to my bicycle because it had two screws that lined up perfectly for this Topeak Modula Bottle Cage otherwise I would have returned the item. They are DECEPTIVE because they don't simply put that pertinent piece of information out anywhere in the description of this product on Amazon. To make things even more insulting, when I went to their website, I noticed they have the actual attachment mount piece I would've expected this to come with in the first place ([...]). That just proves the point that they knew exactly what they were doing when they split these two products up. Being deceptive and sneaky about selling products is one way to make a profit I suppose, but it's also a good way to get a bad review on Amazon. Oh and what's even more confusing is there is a photo in the description page of this item (probably sent in by another user) that shows the bike with a mounting bracket, leading to more confusion about what you actually get and don't get with the purchase of this item. On the other hand, it seems to be built out of some fairly sturdy plastic. Also, when the Modula Bottle Cage is fully extended it holds a standard plastic water bottle with a little extra wiggle room just to give everyone an idea of what this is capable of holding. I know the plastic construction will probably allow for a little more play to fit a bigger bottle, but not by much. Overall, the product is good and worth the buy if you actually know what you are paying for. Definitely don't have time to guess what I'm getting with my purchase or not, putting the information about the fact that a mounting bracket IS NOT INCLUDED with this product somewhere on the description page would be a respectable and honest thing for the Topeak to do, unless they like receiving ratings and reviews like this. Hope this was helpful everyone.

Adjustable from useless to standard size, November 14, 2011
By salba
|
|
This product is pointless. It adjusts from too small to hold any bottle I've ever seen to holding your standard bike water bottle or 12 oz soda can. That's right, the largest it can adjust to is holding a bottle that any other water bottle cage could hold. Wanna hold something bigger on occasion? I did. It's why I paid extra for this product. Is it suitable for that purpose? No. What a waste of time.

I purchased this item and used it on several long distance trips and then during mountan bike trails. It will hold wonderfully. I'm getting 2 more since I just broke mine when I took a nasty fall and broke it with my leg. All in all a very good product.

Great cage, can't get any better., July 19, 2011
By lazyranch

This cage is great for the price. Unfortunately, I paid 8$ for it a couple weeks ago simply to cover the 25$ free shipping minimum.
Cage does not make any noises when biking and is adjustable. Also, it is extremely easy to put on the bike. Simply use an allen hex wrench to take out the screws on the lower frame, and use those screws to hold the cage. Now I never go out biking without a full bottle of water in my cage.

Nice cage, June 30, 2011
By Dave (So Cal)
|
|
I didn't shop very hard for bottle cages. I was just looking for something that looked a little different and wasn't very expensive. I was pleasantly surprised when the two cages that I ordered arrived, because it turns out that these are adjustable. My kids love to put store-bought water bottles in their water cages, but they always fall out because the water bottles are too small for their cages. But these cages adjust larger and smaller, so they fit those bottles perfectly. I'm going to have to pick up a few more of these for my kids.

Installed two on my old Cannondale mountain bike. One for a water bottle, second one holds a battery for my equally old lighting system. Cages are light, easily mounted, adjustable, strong, Holds medium to small water bottles. Good value.

Camelback 750 ml Bottles, June 28, 2011
By Who Cares (USA)
|
|
This cage did not expand wide enough to fit my 750 ml Camelback bottle. It did fit my Polar bottle, and will collapse to securely hold smaller bottles. It seems sturdy and well designed. I was just hoping for something that would give me the flexibility to take an even larger bottle than my Camelbacks.

Had been using this for more than two weeks now. I would say that it is a great product. It holds my water bottle firmly even during very bumpy ride. I am very satisfied with this product. Would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a entry level water cage.

cool looking, easy to install, and functional, April 7, 2011
By Kyle (United States)
|
|
it took about 30 seconds to install on my bike. I like how it's adjustable, so I can use most bottles in the cage. Not sure about durability, I'm guessing that the plastic will flex a bit before it snaps. If it does snap, it's cheap enough to replace. One thing to note, be sure to tighten the yellow screen enough so that you don't lose it.

Works as expected!, March 25, 2011
By Enthusiast (Tampa, FL)
|
|
I just received the cage today and it is what I expected. I already have one of this on my bike, and wanted to change my other steel cage to have a uniform look. I have no problems with tightening/adjusting the size of the holder. I do not expect it to hold larger bottles, but smaller ones. So far so good! And yes, shipping was fast!

Not for large all tall bottles, March 19, 2011
|
|

Good cage, January 12, 2011

Bought this cage due to the positive reviews here and have not been disappointed. The plastic is strange, it's flexible but tough and still holds any bottle very securely. The fact that it is adjustable is absolutely fantastic as I have several bottles of different sizes.

Does not extend enough to fit larger bottles, November 30, 2010
By Baku

It;s a good quality plastic cage, however not large enough to fit 1L water bottles. Although I was able to fit 1L Nestle bottle in there but not sure if it stays in place while I ride my bike. Other than that it is a great product.

Mine Didn't Last Too Long, November 22, 2010
By Cass G (South Lake Tahoe, Ca)
|
|
This was a fine cage while it lasted, but after about 6 months the yellow adjust button started continually falling off when I would hit potholes and such, I was lucky enough to realize when it happened a few times, but eventually lost it rendering the cage worthless, so I'm going back to a single frame holder with no small parts to fall off and lose.

Get This Bottle Cage, June 29, 2010

Stop searching for a bottle cage, because this is the one to get. Tough plastic, easy adjustable feature fits to any bottle size (within reason), and it's $6. You can't go wrong. Very happy with this product, and I'm probably gonna buy another.

Sturdy well designed inexpensive water bottle holder, June 27, 2010
By ahope577
|
|
After reading the other reviews here on amazon i purchased this water bottle holder and couldn't be happier mounting it was simple and straight forward. While it is plastic it is very durable as others have mentioned. The dial on the underside is a great feature which allows you to adjust the cage depending on the bottle. I use a 700ml stainless steel nathan bottle which fits without issue - it would be equally at home with a small plastic bottle too. All in all well worth the money

waterbottle holder, May 19, 2010

This holder is awesome. Metal water bottles do not shake or rattle in these holders. My fear was that the plastic would be cheap and break but that is not the case. Holder is also adjustable for different sizes and shapes of water bottles. Definatly go with this product!

Good water bottle cage at a decent price, April 25, 2010

I bought two of these water bottle cages for my mountain bike, and I'm very happy with them. I was concerned that they might be flimsy and break, but they're holding up really well. I love that they can be adjusted to fit different sized bottles, it's come in handy more than a few times. Overall, I'm very pleased with my purchase and would recommend them to others.

Okay, but not for the price, July 21, 2011
By EM (Chicago, USA)
|
|
The Topeak Modula Cage EX is "grade" plastic with bottom mounted adjuster dial. The plastic feels more like flimsy cheap plastic. It isn't, but I felt like it was going to break on me and didn't want to take that chance. I've purchased a few others for a lot less (Planet Bike, Novara, Forte) and they are better constructed. I paid almost $8 for it, and noticed that the price has gone down.
The nice feature on this is the adjusted dialer. You can adjust it to fit different size bottles, or so one would think. I have a variety of bottles that I use and at the largest setting only one bottle did not fit. It is great for on the go coffee cups as well as different size cans, but not for my use. I ended up returning it and getting a $3 Planet Bike cage instead.

nice product but could be larger, October 1, 2010
By John Craine (Westwood, MA)
|
|
I purchased this for my new Motobecane Immortal Pro carbon road bike. I wanted something light but wasn't willing to pay $45 for carbon just to shave off a few grams. I chose this thinking that because it is adjustable the plastic won't rattle against my water bottle and it would give me the option of riding with a larger bottle. It certainly works as advertised but even at full size it is smaller than the aluminum cage on my commuter bike. My normal water bottle fits, just barely. I will probably put this on my kids bike and look for another option. Note that this doesn't come with mounting screws because it is assumed the screws that came with your bike frame are still in place. You can see more of my bike gear at [...]

Feels Cheap, Adjustment Isn't Impressive, Inexpensive, August 24, 2010
By KC (Phoenix, AZ)

Pros:
1. Very lightweight.
2. Very inexpensive.
Cons:
1. Recessed area for attachment screws made it difficult to install with dropping my screws many times.
2. Feels kind of cheap.
2. Adjustment on the bottom is hard to do while riding.
3. Bottles with weird curves (Arrowhead bottles) sit awkwardly.
Bottom line - for $9, what did I expect?
3 Stars - JUST OK...

Ordering a second one, May 24, 2012
By Steven
|
|
Pros: -Holds well -adjustable feature -sturdy and yet flexible
Cons: -Feels cheap. I mean go figure it's not a full carbon cage or anything but it felt a little cheaper than I thought it would. -Edges of cage kind of sharp. It's not that they're sharp but when I need to shoulder or half-shoulder my bike, my forearm rubs against the edge of the cage. I used sandpaper to soften it up and no problem at all.
Overall a really nice bottle cage, 4 stars and thus I ordered another one.

Good idea, flimsy execution, May 18, 2012
By N. Wheeler (Bronx, NY)

|
Used it for the first time on the NYC 5 Boro bike tour. First I jumped off a curb and my plastic water bottle went flying out of it. Couldn't retrieve the water bottle due to the pack of people. Then 20 miles later the adjustable part fell off my bike. Again, no chance to retrieve. Not Topeak's best effort.

Good, but small, March 25, 2012
By Kenneth Scheman

This holder is a great idea executed poorly. While it is adjustable, even at its largest setting it doesn't quite hold my Contigo 20 oz. travel mug. What's the point of being adjustable if at the largest opening it only holds the average size water mug.

These are keepers. They're light weight, adjustable, a nice design and won't scratch stainless bottles. They haven't given me concerns with durability, so standard metal cages may be more strength than actually needed.

I can't imagine a water bottle holder being much better. This cage weighs almost nothing, which is an added bonus. It's also adjustable, to carry anything from a 6 oz. bottle, to my 20 oz. Polar Insulated Bottle. Don't know if it will hold a 24 oz. or not.
