Cyclists can secure items within easy reach using the elastic top bungees. | Topeak's largest trunk bag, the MTX DXP offers ample storage space, with a divided main compartment and a two-stage expandable top, along with two side panels with expandable panniers. You can even carry the trunk bag like a messenger bag using the included removable shoulder strap. Other features include molded EVA foam insulation, a water bottle holder, a 3M reflective strip, a RedLite clip, and elastic top bungees. The MTX DXP bag, which is compatible with an optional Topeak rain cover, measures 14.5 by 8.5 by 9.8 inches (W x H x D) and weighs 2.53 pounds. About Topeak Topeak has received an avalanche of awards and accolades since its founding in 1991. The company has developed such innovations as the JowBlow floor pumps with SmartHead technology, which sense and automatically adapt to Schrader and Presta valves without swapping out parts; the award-winning Morph series of mini pumps; the ALiEN multitools, which separate into different parts so cyclists can bring only the tools they need; and the Hexus mini tool and Bikamper personal shelter, which received the prestigious Red Dot award for outstanding design. The most important part of the Topeak story, however, is the passion of the founders and employees, who are cyclists, too. The company is dedicated to making the ride better, and focuses on creating products and accessories to help facilitate an escape from the traffic jams, cubicles, and mind-numbing meetings of everyday life.

Excellent Bag, July 23, 2009
By The Count (Iowa, USA)
|
|
Bought this bag, along with Topeak's Explorer rack, for commuting to work (20 mile round trip). Have been extremely pleased with the product thus far. Key observations:
+ Large capacity: Change of clothes, blackberry, etc. easily fit into the main compartment (I keep my work shoes at work). The side panniers provide considerable extra storage, as needed, for storing lunch, work files, jacket, etc.
+ Very functional: I highly recommend buying one of the Topeak racks with the MTX Quick Release features (such as the Explorer rack I purchased)...very easy to to slide bag on and off the rack and the bag is tightly secured when in use.
+ Quality construction: Only time will tell how the zippers hold up, but bag appears to be very durable and well-made.
+ Size/appearance: Since this is Topeak's largest trunk bag, was a little concerned it might look out of proportion on the bike and be heavy. But it looks fine, and it has not significantly altered the "drivability" of the bike.
+ Price: Amazon provided very competitive price and much lower than the local bike shops
- Rain cover extra: Maybe a little bit of a bummer that the rain cover is an extra accessory. I bought the rain cover, but a reasonable alternative is to just wrap your cargo in plastic bags if you're expecting rain. The trunk bag itself is not rain proof, so you will need some type of protection if you do not want your cargo to get wet.
Overall, extremely pleased with the product thus far and highly recommend it to those that want a convenient, durable storage option with considerable capacity.

Great bag for commute and more, May 24, 2009
By L. Gesky (Chicago, IL)
|
|
This is a great bag, well constructed, large, and secures easily. I originally selected this bag for my work commute. I use this or the smaller one a purchased for my partner almost every time I am on my bike. I actually find that I bike more often because it is easier to run errands.
The only complaint/suggestion is a longer shoulder strap. When I carry the bag with full panniers I would like to sling it over shoulder but the strap is too short.

GREAT BAG, June 18, 2010
By B rider (New Orleans, LA)
|
|
Everyone has such positive comments about this bag. I love this bag too but nothing is perfect and when I'm reading reviews on a product I might buy I like to hear what is wrong with it from people who have had problems before making a purchase. That being said here are the pros and cons--
PROS -plenty of space
-durable material
-like the pockets and elastic bands on top and at bottom of each side pannier
-like the ability to slide bag on rack
CONS -carrying handle is at top of bag and is supported by zipper(not good when bag has a heavy load)
-plastic piece on bottom of bag that slides onto rack will make clicking noise when riding on rough road or when riding over even small lines in cement on sidewalk and the whole plastic piece broke in half when I pulled too hard to try to slide bag off rack(probably my fault)
-bag has yellow spring loaded locking hook that hooks on to rack. Worked fine with my first bike and rack but after that bike was stolen my second bike and exact same rack, the hook would unhook when riding and start to slide off rack, solved this problem with a bungee going over entire bag which also solved clicking noise.
In summation the bag is great and with any product there will be problems. Overall I like it and would recommend it.

AMAZING BAG, August 19, 2009
By Christopher Mostyn (Missouri)
|
|
This is a great bag. I bought this to outfit my bike for commuting. I am a teacher and I can carry my books and a change of clothes plus lunch, a lock and a hat. Works great and stays in place. The only problem I had was that one time, the latch that holds it on the bike let loose and it slid back a little. I use zip ties for extra security now but it works great. I also have the topeak rack for disc brakes and plan on getting the handlebar bag. Fenders will definitely help with the road watter if it is in the rain. I do need to get the rain cover for mine. Buy it, load it, leave the car home!

The absolute best option for the biking commuter, March 30, 2010
By Craig S. Prior
|
|
I bike-commute to work, nearly 15 miles each way. I love feeling this bag tucked in behind me because it is the absolute best.
It is tough, durable, excellently made. Multiple zippers for different compartments and an expansion option. I detach it from the rack, attach the carrying strap, bring it into the office and use it like a briefcase.
This bag is all quality and is emminently practical. I use one of the pannier sides to put away a flannel shirt mid-ride. I also like the water-bottle holder built onto the back of the bag. One bottle on my bike frame and another on the bag... I'm set.
If you're a spandex-racer this is definitely too heavy and bulky. But if you're a commuter, especially a geeky one like me (cargo shorts, polyester polo shirt, bright yellow windbreaker, Keen clipless bike shoes) this bag is the cat's pajamas.
Oh yeah, I also got the rain cover Topeak Rain Cover for MTX Trunk. Not a lot of rain here in So Calif, but when not in use the rain cover folds up and out of the way. Smart option.

Great bag for commuting. First, I've gotten DX trunk bag, but found that the side bags were too small. So, purchased DXP with side panniers. Very sturdy and tough. Very satisfied overall for commute and put stuff if heading to the gym.

MTX trunk bag, November 2, 2009
By Ho Daddy (Rochester,MN)
|
|
The bag is great! Easy to lock on and off. Lots of compartments for various sized items. Have not had it in any rainy weather yet so not sure how it will perform. I bought a rack at a local bike shop for $45 dollars and was waiting to get the bag because it was $110. Found it @ Amazon for $65. If you are buying I saw the bag, rack, and rain cover combo for around $100 great value.

Great for Commuting, January 29, 2010
By S. Beal (Winter Park, FL USA)

Great design and plenty of space. This trunk looks sharp, and it is very functional both on and off the bike. I use the drop-down panniers to store my dress shoes and clothes to commute to work. This leaves the main trunk compartment to carry lunch, or any additional things you need to transport. When the panniers are not needed, they fold up on the side and disappear into the trunks main body.

Does it's job very well., August 17, 2010
By Eric Rowland (Indianapolis, Indiana USA)
|
|
I bought this bag to replace a similar Trek bag which had frustrated me. The Trek bag wasn't holding its shape very well, causing the rear light to face the ground, and it was a pain to remove when I parked the bike due to its velcro straps.
This Topeak bag seems to be holding its shape very well and is surprisingly commodious for its size. I'm getting more stuff in this on than I had the Trek bag, even though this one looks smaller to me on the bike. I'm an architect and have found the bungees on the top to be particularly helpful when I have to carry a roll of drawings. I no longer have to carry extra bungees with me to do that. The panniers are also great for packing my change of clothes.
I was concerned that the attachment system might rattle, but have not found that to be the case.
The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is that the zipper pulls feel a little wimpy, the main compartment should have one more divider, and the rain cover should be included at this price.

great product, November 27, 2009

We chose the Topeak MTX Trunk Bag DXP because of it's capacity and after reading other reviews. Our local bike
shop carries the Topeak line and the dealer told us he thinks they are the best product on the market! He has
carried this brand for years. We haven't actually used them (we bought two) yet, but will use them for shopping in
town. We also purchased the rain covers for them!

Could be better, but it's a great option, May 19, 2011
By S95owner
|
|
Received my Topeak MTX DXP trunk bag in April 2011.
I'm an avid commuter who has been using a 900 c.i. Jandd trunk bag for the last 12 years. It looks something like this [...], but without the panniers. It was (and still looks to be) a bag with great features, but it lacks one major requirement that Topeak offered: quick release. The velcro on the Jandd wore out in one year, so I sewed new velcro on and stopped taking it off the bike. After 12 years, the straps that held it onto the bike had started to wear through -- it was time to get new equipment.
Because of the quick release I will happily keep this bag, despite my complaints below. I could not find another quick-release rack/bag pair that seemed as well made. In retrospect, I wonder if I should have ordered the cheapest MTX bag, hacked the quick release mounting hardware out of it, and transferred it over to the Jandd. Just a thought...
The quick release slider and latch mechanism seem durable and work well. There is rattling between the bag and the rack slider on bumpy roads, but it's muted and therefore tolerable. One person in the reviews said their bag almost fell off during a ride, but I can't see how that could happen unless it was not put on correctly, or if the spring was broken.
Am not too impressed with overall feature set of the MTX DXP. It's a good looking bag, but seems to have sacrificed function for form in certain ways. Specifically, the side pockets are made of such rigid material that when you load them up with just a few things -- in my instance a small Topeak pump, patch kit, spare tire, and minimal tools -- instead of bulging outward, they bulge inward, thus removing volume from the main compartment in the middle. Having the panniers packed in there only makes it worse. It's visually nice that the outer envelope retains its composure, but frankly I'd rather have the volume in the middle.
Putting some numbers to it: the interior main compartment length is 11.5" and the depth varies from 5 3/4 at the front to 6 3/4 at the rear (This difference in height is probably to accommodate low seats.). Depending on intrusion from the side pockets, the width varies considerably as follows: If both side pockets are open and the panniers are out, the main compartment relaxes, expanding to 500 cubic inches. With both pockets closed and filled with the road-repair necessities, the main compartment becomes compressed to ~350 c.i. If the main compartment is then stuffed with things so that it pushes back outward, it can accommodate to perhaps 435 c.i., but with pressure. The expanding top will add ~55 c.i. to each of the above measurements (disappointing, because the Jandd expands by 60-70%). These volume calculations do not account for what should be subtracted due to the rounded corners, nor do they account for what bulging of the lid will add.
Each pannier is 13.5" x 10.5" x 2". That would be 285 c.i. each, but of course they are flexible bags, so can bulge way out, probably doubling in volume.
Some people complained that the water bottle pocket in the rear is not deep enough; a regular sized bottle -- as opposed to something half the size -- will eventually just pop out. This seems like it might be true, but as a commuter what I use that pocket for is to hold my cable and lock so they don't have to be hanging and clanking from the rear of the seat.
The partition in the main compartment can be velcro'd at any position. I positioned it as far as possible to the rear so it can hold wallet, keys and cell phone. That way, they can be accessed easily by unzipping just a little of the zipper from the main compartment. I would actually prefer a separate flexible pocket on the outside for keys. That way no matter how stuffed the bag is, the keys are always easily accessible, and I can always feel for them in a second, even while riding, to assure myself I didn't just lock myself out of the house.
Speaking of zippers, while they seem to be operating smoothly so far -- except when they catch on something, which is frequent -- they are fine toothed. Fine-toothed zippers seem to collect dirt easily and become stiff over time. Am feeling they will need to be treated gently if they are going to last. (The Jandd had a nice flap over each zipper to keep the rain and dirt out; I wish Topeak would add this).
Another feature my Jandd bag had was more insulation in the sides, and it had insulation in the lid. The Topeak bag has much less insulation. This could be neutral or bad depending on how the bag is to be used.
If I had Topeak's ear, I would suggest that a good addition would be a big zippered compartment on the outside of the lid. The extra volume would more than make up for that lost due to the bag being shorter in the front than in the rear, and I've never trusted mesh pockets or elastic strapping to hold anything on long term, except for maybe clothing.
The Topeak MTX DXP weighs a total of 2.52 lbs. (Yes, I do have a scale that measures 1/100ths of a pound.)

This bag works very well. When I bike to work in the morning I need to wear a jacket to stay warm, but biking home in the evening I need a way to carry my jacket. This bag makes it very easy to carry stuff around town. It's amazing how quickly I can take it off and put it onto my rack. It was definitely worth the purchase.

buyer beware !!, April 19, 2011
By James quigg (philadelphia)
|
|
i have been a buyer of Topeak products for years
while this bag is great what good is it if the tracking is
so loose it will fall off your bike!
they have a problem at the factory__ quality control is now an issue !!
the plastic piece on bottom that locks the bag in now rocks back at forth
and will make this bag fall off bike cause its no longer a tight snug fit
and its not the screws its the fact the plastic piece is no longer wide
enough to fit tight to the rails
i have now bought 2 of these off amazon in the past week new and have
had to send both back
i hated to do it cause they are well built outside of the bad plastic
and untill they correct this i will not buy and will give only 1 star
i bought this same bag 2 years ago and it fits snug but wanted one for
my other bike
there are great when they are built right
sorry to say thats no longer the case..!!!!

Would be nice but..., July 1, 2011
By grumpynerd (Boston, MA)
|
|
it is designed with *no* means of attaching to a standard rack. No velcro loops or places to thread straps or bungees. Nothing. Plus the heavy plastic proprietary attachment hardware adds a great deal of unnecessary weight to this bag. I'd say half the weight of the bag is the mounting system.
I'm sure the system works fine if you plan on replacing all your racks and luggage with Topeak brand stuff and never use any other brand bags or racks. That's a common marketing strategy in bike equipment these days: force the consumer to buy into a whole line of non-compatible stuff so he finds himself forced to buy stuff he doesn't need. In this case you *have* to buy a Topeak rack to use this bag, even if you already have a perfectly good rack. If you have a second bike you want to use it with, you've got to replace the rack on that one too.
The benefits of the Topeak attachment system to the *consumer* are dubious. It's not like universally compatible rack trunks are hard to use or fall off. It's purely a marketing ploy to sucker buyers into having to replace stuff they already own. Therefore I have to give this product a one star rating.
The bag itself seems nice, so I plan on removing the Topeak mounting bracket with a length of basswood that can be bungeed in place. That would be just as convenient, and probably a bit lighter than Topeak's heavy, incompatible and overengineered solution to a very simple problem.
In any case, even if I *wanted* to use this absurd system, Topeak does not make a rack that fits my folding bicycle; even the seatpost racks won't work because they won't accommodate a 37mm seatpost.

Good, mostly, March 12, 2012
By Chad Greene
|
|
I've commuted with this bag for two years. Here's what I've found:
PROS: 1. Incredibly easy to clip in and out of the rack. 2. Very sturdy when locked into the rack. 3. Holds a LOT of groceries, clothes, chicken feed, what-have-you.
CONS: 1. The little loop that holds a blinky light is attached to a floppy water bottle holder. Unless you keep a rigid water bottle in there at all times, your blinky light will droop and point at the ground.
2. The handle is attached to the top flap of the bag instead of attaching to the body of the bag itself. This is a structural problem because when you carry your grocery-laden bag from the checkout counter to your bike, all the weight in the bag is then concentrated at a few points along the zipper. It took less than a year for the zipper on my bag to break, right where the handle straps attach. I had to sew the zipper shut, cut out the fabric from the expansion zipper, and use the expansion zipper to open and close the main compartment of the bag. That fix lasted a year before the expansion zipper broke in the same place.

Perfect Portland Party Bag!, November 27, 2011
By Maleko48
|
|
I just got to take this bag out for its first ride and it served me well. I was able to fit 24 tallboys of beer in the panniers while the top area was loaded with bike tools/parts and extra warm gear. (The expanding top zipper is one of my FAVORITE features!) It even rained a bit that night and everything was just fine, although I do plan on hitting it with an extra layer of spray-on waterproofing since it is constantly raining up this way. I also found out it pleasantly doubles as a (pretty comfortable) extra seat to get a non-bike friend to and from locations. (Thanks Topeak Explorer rack, for not breaking under 140+ lb load!) I couldn't be happier getting the weight off my shoulders, although when riding a loaded bike, it makes it considerably harder to stand up and ride for powering up hills, so make sure your bike is geared right. As far as fit and clearance goes, I have it on a Mercier Kilo WT5 from Bikes Direct and it looks and rides great with no problems at all.

one great bag, November 18, 2011
By Terry (HIXSON, TN, United States)
|
|
I have had this bag for about a year now and I am extremely happy with it. Its oversize zip out panera bags are enormous, I have used it for hauling my commuting cloths, groceries and my friends jackets. I use the expandable trunk bag for tools, snack bars, wallet phone, gloves, shirts, and about anything else. The inside pocket on the lid is great for sunglasses. The net bag on the outside of the lid is great to keep wet or greasy things plus there is an extra water bottle holder on the back. I love the quick release and have never had a problem with it being secure no matter how bad the bumps jar it. The best part is when you have to leave the bike you just take it all with you using the shoulder strap. I have three bikes with Topeak racks so I never ride without it.

Great bag for the price, October 24, 2011
By D. Bryan Viers
|
|
I love this bag and have no complaints about it. If I had to find one thing to point out is that it would be nice for the inside of the fold down panels to have a Velcro type strap to keep something in place instead of shuffling all down to the bottom but that is it. It does great for carrying food, clothes, and shoes to and from work and actually does pretty decent in a full downpour for keeping your items dry even without the water protection. I'm going to go one step further the next time I mount it and spray some waterproofer on it, but as it is, I haven't noticed any items getting wet and I've been in some pretty nasty summer storms.

Excellent and sturdy Bag!, September 21, 2011
By T.S. (California)
|
|
This is an excellent and sturdy bag!
Small enough to carry around some smaller items on rides, and the panniers are big enough if you decide to go shopping on the way home.. :)
The only thing I'm missing are more dividers -- they should at least offer some as an accessory. I added some packaging foam inside and carry my DSLR camera in the bag when riding..
To give an idea about the size of the panniers:
The panniers are about 39cm deep, my old 17" MacBook Pro (39cm x 26cm) barely fits in one of the panniers -- but there is no padding, so I would not recommend that.

Well worth it!, September 15, 2011

Just got this bag this morning and took it out for it's 25 mile maiden voyage, empty, with the panniers unfolded see what kind of clearance I have to my heels and to see if I got any flapping. NONE. It was attached to the Topeak Explorer rack and I am just completely thrilled with with this purchase. I've bought a less expensive type but returned it since my heels hit it and the fastening of it wasn't anywhere close to getting it right. They did an excellent job of engineering and I am NOT one to right reviews of anything, but this was worth the time. Buy it

Great bag for biking photographers., July 5, 2011
By ELMC (Miami, FL USA)
|
|
I bought this bag to be able to transport camera gear as well as some amenities on long bike trails through some of the national parks nearby my home. As a photographer, I needed a trunk bag that was well padded and very secure on the rack. The MTX system is great because the rail below the bag allows for very secure mounting of the bag to the Topeak Explorer rack. The bag doesn't slip or slide and once locked down and doesn't come off or slip with normal riding even on rough unpaved trails. The main compartment of the bag can be expanded and holds my 1D Mark II camera body, 300mm f/2.8 IS lens without hood, as well as a 1.4 and 2.0 teleconverter (see my picture under customer images). It will also hold my flash (Canon 580 EX II) and GPS unit (Garmin 60CSx). A great bonus for this bag is that vecro padded dividers can be used to make the trunk bag just like a gadget shoulder camera bag. The bottom of the trunk compartment is well padded but I added a thin layer of memory foam to provide a little extra vibration resistence since the contents of this bag are valuable and sensitive. I strap my tripod on top of the bag via bungee cords criss crossed for maximum security.
One side pannier holds my tripod head and hood to my 300 with plenty of room to spare for batteries, memory cards, etc. The other pannier I use to store extra food, water, spare tube, bike pump, repair kit, garbage bag, rain cover, and first aid kit with plenty of room to spare. The best part for me is that I can take the bag off the bike and carry it via shoulder strap if I need to, a really nice feature if I want to park the bike and take my gear off trail a bit.
Overall, the bag is just great for what I bought it for, and offers solid support and TONS of space. It's very well made with good quality zippers and nylon. The bag is moderately lightweight, but this was not a major concern for me.
My bike is a Trek Navigator 1.0 WSD with Bontrager Cruiser CRZ+ saddle.

Best Buy for my needs, July 4, 2011
By James

Brought this pocduct along with Topeak Explorer Tubular Rack (w/o Spring) and Topeak TourGuide Handlebar Bag DX. I have been nothing but pleased with the use of this product. I have an 8 to 12 mile commute to and from work. I have tried my best to find something wrong with any of my Topeak products. Still searching. For me, they have performed better than some of the the negative reviews I read.
I carry work clothes (pants, shirt, under garments, socks, belt) in one pannier. The other pannier holds shoes, swimmers towel, body sponge, soap, and deodorant. I still have room for my laptop and have carried a small quanity of groceries. (liter of soda, bag of bagels,2 cans of tuna, and 2 cups of yogart) in one of the panniers.
In the expandable top portion of the of the bag, I carry my tool pouch, diabetes bag and supplies, rain jacket, cell phone, and wallet and still have room for more items.
In the top outer portion I carry a newspaper, enery bars and a plastic bags of Gatorade.
I have ridden in the rain the the rain cover kept contents of bag and items in bag completely dry. I highly recommend purchasing this item

Great Bag - But Needs the MTX QuickTrack!, June 11, 2011
By Jer (Warren, PA)
|
|
I went through a couple of other rack bags for my road bike... Not quite liking what I found.
So, from the reviews, I got this one. It's a fantastic bag. Just the right size for average commutes, or even longer trips. The fact that the panniers fold up into the sides is fantastic for regular daily use.
The one problem - contrary to some reviews I've read - this bag did not come with ANY method of attaching it to a regular rack, which my bike already had. I have a Breezer Uptown 7, and all those accessories come standard (as they should for over $800) - so I wasn't about to pay the extra twenty or so for another rack... It took a little MacGuyver-ing to affix this to my standard rack, but it is nice and secure. What I did was take the quick release track off of the bottom of the bag, slide that beneath my rack, and screwed it back into the bag around my rack bars - which holds it much more securely than other methods. I can't remove the bag and carry it around with me, but that wasn't a concern when I bought it anyway.
Other than that little surprise - I love it. It fits my laptop, a binder and books/papers for work, a coffee mug, and whatever you can fit in the main compartment (clothes, lunch, camera, etc.) It's very well padded and rigid. The side bags are a tad thin, so I wouldn't put too much weight or anything with sharp corners in them, but they seem nice. The zippers are much better than some other bags.
All in all a great trunk bag - only reason I gave it four stars is due to the lack of attachment methods.
Highly recommend buying the companion rack for your bike if you don't already have one, or don't mind spending the extra twenty-something dollars.

Name Correction, May 15, 2011

Topeak makes great products. This bag is not, however, a Topeak MTX TrunkBag DXP. It is a Topeak MTX TrunkBag DX. The difference is only measurements and I didn't even notice until I looked it up on the Topeak website. Don't get me wrong, its probably a great product, but this bag was too small for my purposes; the DXP model is the right size though.

Amazing fourth dimensional bag!, March 27, 2011
By verygooddog
|
|
I exaggerate only slightly; it does seem that the Topeak MTX Trunk Bag DXP is larger on the inside than it is on the outside. I am using the DXP with the Topeak Explorer Bike Rack attached to my Specialized Sirrus hybrid bike.
I've only had the DXP for 2 days, so I can't speak to how it will stand up to long term wear and tear, although it does seem to be very well made. I am in love with this bag! My first outing was to the local farmer's market. Parking near the market is very limited, so getting there by bike works prefectly. I locked up the bike and strolled through the market, picking up a long loaf of French bread, a huge bunch of Swiss chard, arugula and basil. I grabbed a bag of tomatoes and some fresh mozzarella. Returning to the bike, I wan't sure that everything would fit, since I already had a couple of bottles of water, some tools and other items in the bag. Amazingly, everything fit. The bread and the bunch of swiss chard were too tall to close the zippers on the side bags, but everything rode safely and securely.
A couple of hours later, I went out to the grocery store and bought a good sized cart full of items. I loaded the DXP: in one side bag went a 5 lb bag of flour sandwiched between 2 bottles of wine and topped with a bag of limes and a wedge of cheese. In the other side bag went a box of dishwashing detergent, a half gallon of milk a 1/4 of a watermellon and a bag of lemons. I filled the top compartment with a dozen eggs topped with a large bag of tortilla chips. All of the zippers closed! The side bags have an expandable pleat running through the center that allows them to grow to fit the contents. The weight distribution is terrific; with most of the weight lower than the top of the rear wheel, the effect on balance isn't noticeable. When I reached home, I was happy that I could just unsnap the DXP from the rack and carry it into the kitchen. No bags required!
The final outing of the day was an expedition to the municipal pool for a swim. I carried the towels, bathing suits, sun screen, goggles, shower stuff and a few other odds and ends for me and my girlfriend. Once we were there, I could take the DXP right into the locker room. Very nice!
The DXP has a mesh pocket on the rear end for a water bottle, another mesh pocket on the top for small items, a small bungee net on top for things too long to fit in the top compartment and a small strap on the back that I use to clip my Planet Bike Blinky Super Flash Tail Light. Inside the cover of the top compartment is a small pocket that I use for a few tools.
The side panels are well designed. Folded up, there is enough room for a Kryptonite Evolution Series 4 Standard Bicycle U-Lock with Bracket (4-Inch x 9-Inch) (if you seperate the U from the bar) or some small items. This U lock will also fit in the top compartment. Once you open them, the rigid side covers fold against the rack stays and prevent the nylon bags from hitting the spokes. For extra insurance, there is an adjustable bungee at the end of each side bag that can be snapped onto the bottom of the rack.
This is a really great piece of gear!

Great bag for a commuter, September 7, 2010
By origin415
|
|
Have been using this bag for several weeks now and I have been extremely pleased.
The capacity is very large, I can do most of my grocery shopping runs with this bag alone. The main compartment is rigid and has a movable divider inside, and also has the ability to expand upwards to accommodate taller things I keep a spare tube, some tools, and a small pump on the inside on one side of the divider and I'm able to get two half gallon containers of milk in on the other with some small room to spare. The panniers easily swallow the largest cereal boxes I can find.
The panniers are loose material, but have a velcro strap to keep it attached to the rigid case which folds down to open them, and then also have an elastic cord to attach to the bottom of your rack to keep them from flapping when they aren't full. When I go over bumps with something hard in there I can hear it rattle but it is nothing serious and I'm not afraid to put something breakable in there.
The water bottle holder at the back is useful, but somewhat of a stretch. Going very fast over bumps sometimes my water bottle pops out, but I have solved this by wrapping the elastic cord which tightens it around the mouth of the bottle twice.
Easily attaches and detaches from the explorer rack, and has a nice shoulder strap which makes it comfortable to wear if the panniers aren't expanded (a couple times I forgot about it and rode off with it still around my shoulders instead of on the rack...), but still doable if they are.
For only 42 cents more than Topeak's smaller EXP bag, this is a very good deal.

Sturdy and big, September 6, 2010
By didirider

This bag comes with me on my regular commute to work and the shops for the last 6 months. It's managed to fit my groceries (box of cereal, 2kgs of meat, fruit and veg, and other small items). There's no problem with this fitting a change of clothes, lock, tools, breakfast and lunch for work. The expandable top section comes in very handy when you need to squeeze in a few extra items before having to use the fold outs.
When I've had to remove my jacket, I just slip it into the bungee cords. Nice and quick change at the traffic lights. It's reflective strips makes it nice and visible.
The only gripe I have is that it rattles. The plastic at the bottom which slides into the quick tracks bump up against the bottom of the bag and makes a fair bit of noise. So, I tie it down with cable ties to stop the noise.
The clip and the quick track system means that I don't have to worry about the bag falling off the bike. Too easy!

Love this trunk bag!, August 26, 2010
By Victor N (New Jersey, USA)
|

Whats not to love? With the expandable top storage area and the two side bags, you have lots of options for all your gear whether you are traveling light or heavy. You won't be able to fit a full size shopping bag in the side panels (I have other bags for that) but if you are looking to take some clothes or other items, this will do the trick.
Don't need the side bags? Just zip them up and they are completely out of the way. My favorite feature? The custom locking mechanism, slide the bag onto a ToPeak rear rack and the bag securely locks into place. No bungies or cords to mess with. Easy on and easy off!

Superb - one big plus and one small minus, June 13, 2010
By Corky (Portland OR USA)
|
|
I use this for clothing and shoes as I commute to work at a hospital and for groceries.
I purchased this bag along with the associated rack even though powerfully apprehensive. My concerns were whether it would be roomy enough and if so, would it stay out of the way of the heels of my size 13 feet? It's passed both tests with honors.
The next advantage is that the rigid sides of the panniers make them easy to zip back up after unloading. I assumed it would be unfolded full-time which hasn't been true.
It's great to just slip it off and carry it into work without having to screw around for 5 minutes with various fasteners.
The only minus is that there is no small pocket to keep tire patches and Allen wrenches separate from general stuff, but they do OK in a Zip-Loc bag in the bottom of the trunk portion.
And so far it's generally waterproof.

Great bag that is easy to put on and take off my bike, April 19, 2012
By voracious reader (New York, NY)
|
|
My biggest concern in getting a bike bag for my new bike was easy of getting it on and off, followed by expandable space.
I live in NYC. I frequently have to lock up my bike when I go to lunch with friends, to pick up something, etc around the city. Other bags that used velcro to secure to the bike rack just took too long to attach. I tried a set of panniers from Bontrager that were easy to remove, however, they were a pain to carry around.
The Topeak Trunk Bag DXP solves both problems. It slides on and off my MTX rack about as easily as a knife through hot butter. The main compartment has more than enough space for the stuff I need regularly (U lock, cable, bike map, patch kit, bike tools, etc).
Moreover, the shoulder strap makes it much easier to haul around NYC when I get off my bike.
Definitely recommended (with an MTX rack of course).

Exceeded expectations, December 27, 2011

I was looking for a rack mounted bag that could collapse down and be out of the way when not in use. This bag has served my purposes perfectly. I mainly use it for runs to the grocery store, and find it can easily pack away two full standard grocery bags. It may be capable of more but I have yet to max out the capacity.

Great bag, lots of uses, November 29, 2011
By Jessica Potter (Thornton, CO, USA)

These bags are very versatile and useful. We took them on a touring trip thru wine country in California. They held up perfectly on our bikes, all loaded down with picnic lunches, extra clothes, and bottles of wine. We (my husband and I) had no problems with them not fitting our bikes and racks (we do have the required trek racks). I never hit it while pedaling, and he never complained about that either. We even used the bags as our carry-on luggage flying out there and they were very convenient for that as well. I would definitely recommend them.

Great bag, sturdy, versatile, September 28, 2011
By orangeade

I love this bag, it has a sturdy construction and good finish. The rigid side panels extend about half way down the length of the panniers when fully deployed. I use this for * cycling trips with my family - we pack snacks in the main compartment, a bottle of water in the elastic lattice on top and fold out a side pannier for extra clothes for the kids. * for commute to work. The panniers are not insulated, so I use a homemade insulated sleeve inside the pannier when I carry my 13.3 inch laptop. I use a slim and light laptop, check yours for fit. The main compartment carries a change of clothes and my lunch, wallet, keys, phone. If you need to wear well ironed clothes (I wear t-shirts and jeans at work), you could use the other side panel to avoid getting them squashed in the main compartment with other things.

What did I do without it?, September 12, 2011
By Chris Miller (Milpitas, CA)

In conjunction with the Topeak Explorer Bike Rack, this Trunk Bag is great for commuters, long-distance riders, and people like me that feel the need to be prepared for just about anything. I'm not too concerned about weight and speed. I carry way too much stuff with me, which is why this bag is perfect for me. It easily fits several spare tubes, a change of clothes, many tools, a meal & some snacks.
Where I work, I have to leave my bike outside. The quick-release makes this bag great for commuting, since I can park & lock my bike, and simply slide the bag off and carry it to my desk without having to worry about someone stealing it.
The only problem I have with it, is the Pannier bags, when folded down, are too far forward for me, as the heels of my shoes make contact with every revolution of the pedals...but that may be because I wear size 15 shoes. Someone with 'normal' size feet probably won't have this issue.

Topeak MTX Trunk Bag DXP Bicycle Trunk Bag with Rigid Molded Panels
Excellent bike bag with ample storage in foldout side panniers. Easy to put on and off a Topeak rack. I did have to buy side bars for the rack to be able to use the panniers. It is relatively light weight. Has a place for an extra water bottle for long trips.

BUY ONE!, August 24, 2011

I bought this bag for going to and from work. It holds my lunch and everything else I could possibly bring to work. I put my dress shoes in one of the panniers-13w, and there is still room for other items. The bag does not shift on the rack, either front to back or side to side and it is very quiet. I sure am glad I did not make the mistake of buying a different MFG of trunk bag. This one is it!

super product, slide track mount is the best!, July 30, 2011
By Suzan Elichaa (falmouth maine)

|
I bought this bag and the topeak explorer rack (easy to put on too) for my Marin Hybrid. I run around town, wanted something to carry unexpected purchases and preplaned mini grocery runs. I leave the bag on almost all the time. The drop down panniers are great for when I end up buying too much stuff or need to store a jacket. I would not suggest heavy items in this area. It is well made but they are still just fabric. While the panniers are zipped up you actually get 2 additional storage areas for wallets, U Lock, etc. The best feature is the slide on/off track. Just push the button and the bag can be remove--no straps to deal with. This bag weighs 2-3 pounds empty. It will hold a paper grocery bag standing up, held drinks and sandwiches, chips, for 3. The top expands and gives you a few more inches. The inside is padded, stiff and provide some insulation for lunch. I use the cup holder on the back for a vaccum bottle so I always have cold water (wont fit my bottle cage). It needs a 2nd pocket inside that is closeable for keys, I had to use a pin. Seems like it is rain resistant. I have had it for 3 weeks and today I managed to slide only 1/2 of the rack on. I heard it jiggling but it never fell off over 12 blocks. I got it for $65 from Modern bike,a great deal for the quality and convenience (if you have the topeak rack).

Good Product, July 20, 2011
By pastorasl (Bath, NY United States)

I bought this bag and the "quick track" rack to go with it. That is one of the best things about this set up. Slide it on, "click" and your ready to go, and when you get there, push the yellow tab down and slide it off...very easy! Once locked into place it stays nice and firm, no problems. The main compartment is not as big as I had hoped, but I get my netbook, power cord, kindle, wallet, keys lunch and spare book or two...so really its not bad...and it expands. The Paniers hold my 8 1/2 X 11 folders and a change of clothes. It is a joy to no longer have all of this on my back! Seems to be well made and study and water resistant. The one thing I will complain about is the placement of the water bottle holder...it is a LONG reach if you don't stop for a drink (which I do not)putting it back is the especially tricky part. But I really don't see any where else they could have put it...and I'm glad to have it. Go buy it, it was a little expensive, but I don't see anything on the market that comes close.

Would Recommend, July 13, 2011
By TPJ (PA, USA)

|
The Product is just what I wanted and I am very happy with the item. In fact I went to REI and bought the same items for my wife's bike. The issue I had is not with the product. It was with the timely (or lack thereof) order fulfillment and delivery of the items that I ordered. This is the first time that I have had such a disappointing experience with Amazon and truly hope that it is the exception and not the harbinger of things to come.
I would highly recommend the trunk bag. I hope those who order it in the future have better luck getting it on time than I did...

Great bag for biking photographers., July 5, 2011
By E. Martin (Miami, FL USA)
|
|

WARNING - fell off rack!.... but otherwise great, June 11, 2011
By T. Noon
|
|
I've had this for a few weeks now. First off, the size and functionality of this bag is really great. I love it. EXCEPT.. I noticed on a 4 mile trip to the grocery store last week that the bag had slid half off the Explorer rack. I wasn't sure how this happened, as it sort of "locks" into position and I honestly felt that it must have been my fault for not making sure it snapped into the locked position. Anyway, ever since then I always make sure it is securely snapped in. Today I went 8 miles to a local store and when I got there realized the bag had fallen off! I had my wallet, cell phone and bike LED lights in there. I freaked out, backtracked my route and the bag was gone. Luckily the person who found it returned it and all of it's contents to me. I'm not sure if it's bumpy roads or what that cause this to unlock and slide off, but it does - trust me. Just trying to prevent this happening to anyone else. Other than that one little flaw the bag is perfect.
I am going to contact Topeak to see if they've had any other complaints about this and see if they will replace mine as something is definitely not right with the locking mechanism.

More room than a 1970's land yacht trunk., June 2, 2011
By Patrick
|

Ok, so not that much room. But for a bike trunk it's pretty darn roomy. I haven't really had a chance to load this beast up with a lot of stuff but it has been nice. It easily carries a large sized U-lock (bottle cages prevent carrying it on the frame.) There's a nice little pouch on the underside of the lid. I stick small stuff in there. It even kept my keyring with about 20 keys in there. I haven't had any issues with the trunk coming loose from the rack. I have to look back to even notice it's there.

Works Great for commuting (a few improvements needed), May 25, 2011
By Todd
|
|
I've been using this bag to commute about 20 miles each way. I'm lucky enough to have a shower/locker room at work so I bring my clothes to work with me everyday. This bag holds my slacks, socks, shirt, shoes (though i now leave a pair of shoes at my desk, my 15 inch laptop and lock/tube/tool/etc and there's still plenty of room to spare. I try to leave my laptop at work as much as possible because I'm really not comfortable with it riding in the pannier but I haven't had any issues to date. I do take the battery out and put it in another compartment to keep the weight down in the pannier. I also keep garbage back to put my laptop in if it starts raining. A few thinks that could make this bag even better....main compartment divider should also run long ways. When rolling my clothes to minimize wrinkles, the roll is usually about 2-3 inches longer than the bag because I keep all my maintenance gear separated in the front of bag (because I can only separate side to side, not long). It would also be nice to have some extra pockets in the main compartment. The one on the lid doesn't really work well, everything always falls out. Some side pouches would be really nice. All in all...the bag works great. Would purchase again in a heart beat. PS-I keep travel sized Downey Wrinkle Release in my bag to remove the wrinkles once at work...works great and it's only about a $1 at walmart/target

Well designed, strong and useful bag, May 5, 2011
By Niilo Tippler (Los Angeles, CA United States)

|
When I bought my new bike recently I had one of the smaller ToPeak 6L MTX bags fitted along with an MTX track carrier. I love that bag and it's great for short to medium rides. However, I intend on going for longer rides and also potentially riding to work meetups where I will need to be able to carry more stuff and a change of clothes (I'm sure my colleagues don't want me sitting there in a pool of sweat!) :). I checked around and discovered ToPeak did a series of larger bags, and after reading so many positive reviews on Amazon I decided on this one.
I am certainly not disappointed. This is a superb bag! It's 20L compared to my other, which is 6L, so overall there's a lot more room. The top of the bag has an extender zip which allows the top to expand upwards to allow for any larger more awkward items. The side packs can be used in their closed position for smaller items such as a portable hard drive, small notebook, phone etc, or they can be unzipped and fully opened out to work as panniers. Once opened up, the outer sides are fabric (albeit strong weave nylon), and would be great for clothing and lighter items, perhaps even a pair of shoes, but I certainly wouldn't risk putting anything too valuable in them, like a laptop, or heavy like books - I'm not sure they would really hold up to that kind of weight and wouldn't provide enough protection for a laptop or tablet due to the potential for knocking against the side bars of the carrier, not to mention the shock forces of hitting potholes and bumps in the road. When carrying my laptop I would always use a backpack anyway.
I also like the little touches with this bag that set it apart, such as the carrying handle on top, and the extra water bottle holder on the back.
As with all the MTX bags, this one is a breeze to fit to the MTX track on the carrier, and removes in seconds. Loads of room, very secure, no fear of it falling off during a ride. Excellent product overall.

Great Item - No more back packs, April 26, 2011
By Rushton
|
|
In brief; great item, best I can find, good to get rid of my back pack, can be improved though. Don't get the wrong idea with the critiscism below it is good, but I feel it could be better. Would rate it 4.5 (I rated it 5 because 4.5 is not an option, rounded it up in this case)
I have been using for the it last two weeks as a new bag for my commuter bike. I was using back pack until now. Not quite as large as my back pack for general use until you use the side panels, but still able to get work clothes and towel in the side panels no problems. Lunch and other items go in the main compartment. Extendable top gets use often as the extra height is handy (easy un-zip and done). I was not initially used to the weight on the bike when loaded and didn't realise the extra weight and its effect when out of the saddle, but you get used to it. (Inertia from the weight when mashing up hills and when flip floping around bends). Also when lifting the bike up stairs for road crossings it is heavier (obviously). Attaching to the MTX rack - Didn't suffer any loose slide problems like described earlier, on the contrary it can be difficult to slide off as it is a bit tight,it need to be wiggled a bit and while holding the bike at the same time can be awkward. Getting it on can be little tricky, you have to line up the slides, once done it goes on OK. It should loosen with age or I can use a lubricant if required. The yellow clip locking the bag to the rack needs to be checked to make sure it clicks 'home' but really no issue, it is better knowing this any way as it gives confidence that it is 'ON' the rack. Zippers are an unknown as it is to early to provide useful info, but the don't seem to catch and seem smooth enough. The side panels have lighter grade material but seems OK. Time will tell as too with the stitching which seems OK too. Rear bike light when attached to the rear loop droops down due to the loose material of the rear pocket this reduces it effectivness. Do not know how to improve that yet as if I put the light it to the rack it will likely get broken. Cannot fit it to the seat post as the bag obscures it. I would like it more if it had a one or more smaller pockets to put tube, lever, tools, keys, loose change etc. The adjustable velcro attached divider in the main compartment does it for now (it only has velcro on the sides, it should also have it on the bottom to give a better seal so small items can be kept with out moving all through the bag)has my wallet, phone, loose change. The rear pocket, meant for a drink bottle is not practicle for that, it is way too far away from you when riding and would flop about when hitting bumps etc, anyway, I have a cage for that. The pocket has no zipper but the elastic bungee with locking tab is OK but items could fall out(tube, tools, levers in here but are a bit exposed). The elastic bungee cord on the top is good for jackets or other items of clothing not required, but taken with you 'just in case', but make sure the cord is tight as I think I lost a vest this morning. I was a bit sloppy in putting it on the bag. A small pocket on the inside of the lid is OK so long as the item stored is narrow else it may touch what ever is in the main compartment when you close the lid. I don't use it yet.
On the hole it is probably the best solution currently available for what I require.

Great Bag, April 25, 2011
By Easy Rider (Big Apple)

I bought the Topeak MTX Trunk Bag DXP Trunk Bag with Rigid Molded Panels for my daily commuting experience. This bag is AWESOME! Plenty of room, easy to install and take off if you use the Topeak MTX Rack system(I used the Super Tourist with side bars and spring.) At times I don't even feel as though the bag is on the bike. Plenty of heel clearance for size 10 shoes. I would recommend this bag to anyone!

The Big Bag, March 21, 2011
By Mr. Todd E. Daniel (Springfield, MO)
|
|
This bag works flawlessly with the Topeak rack and provides plenty of space. The side panniers comfortably fit a laptop computer and the rest leaves room for work clothes to change into and for a lunch. My wife and I used a single bag for a two-day bike trip with room for all of our clothes and extras. It is great for an overnight bike trip or for commuting. Remember that this is a big bag and it is easy to add enough weight to exceed the recommended weight limit on the bike rack.

Good . . . once I received the correct bag, February 14, 2011
By M. Heintz (Houston, TX United States)

Ok, there must have been a problem in the warehouse as I received the wrong bag (DX rather than DXP) version from Amazon 3 times. Customer service was great as always and they quickly worked to resolve the issue. In the end, I kept the DX bag and picked up a DXP version locally.
The DXP is perfect for longer rides or commutes when you need to carry a lot of gear. The bag isn't big enough to hold my laptop in the top portion, but it does hold my netbook just fine. I can then use the panniers to hold my clothes and a lock.
I find this bag a little too bulky on my road bike (I'm using the EX version for that), but it is perfect on my hybrid. The quick release system is also great for when I get to my destination.
I will definitely buy again when this one wears out.

I love this bag. It's sturdy and reasonably compact. It slides on and off the Topeak bike rack easily. I like how there is a movable divider in the main compartment. I would recommend this product.

I purchases this along with the Topeak Explorer rack and couldn't be happier. This is a well-made bag with plenty of storage capacity. The panniers fold into the side pouches when not needed. The bag slides into a track on the rack and clips in place. The bag has lots of storage compartments. You can see a photo of it on my bike at [...]

A fine product that works as advertised., September 2, 2011
By JF Miller (San Luis Obispo, CA United States)

I commute by bike 3 days a week and purchased this trunk bag and matching Topeak rack when my old rack split apart.
The Topeak system is wonderful, and this bag really is just right for my 8 mile ride to work. It holds clothes, lunch keys, phone, and spare tub.
The top interior is a large hard sided open compartment. There is a sturdy divider included the Velcros to the sides to give two adjustable spaces, or it can be left out for larger loads. The lid has a pouch on the inside that I use for keys. The side pouched fold out of the compartments and bungee to the bottom of the rack they are rather large and capable of holding men's dress shoes. When not in use the pack nicely away. The top outside has a mesh pouch and a bungee cris-cross.
Getting the trunk on and off is not complicated, but after 3 weeks sill requires two hands. (No it is not that hard just to put the helmet on first, but...) A little graphite powder on the rails really improved sliding. Once on the trunk is very secure. I have no fear of it falling off. Removal is a two hand job, but can be don in seconds.
None of my complaints are egregious, but hey are worth a star. The zippers of too small particularly on the lid because the obvious thing to do is carry the whole thing by the handles attached to the lid. Speaking of those handles it is annoying to have to close the lid in order to carry it. I would have instead put them just outside the closure. The lid also is a little flimsy and tends to sag. The top mesh pouch would seem to be the perfect place for a cell phone, but the elastic is not tight enough, and I have nearly lost the phone when I have tried. On the other hand there is nothing else on the market that does the same job significantly better.
Finally, regarding the choice between this model with panniers and the the other without. Get this one. While not heavy, neither of these trunks will satisfy the person who knows the weight of their machine down to the oz. The extra weight is insignificant compared to the weight of what you are likely to put in your bag. Even if, like me, you usually leave the panniers tucked up, having them when you need them is well worth it.

Awesome bag, May 13, 2012
By Earthquake5683

Bought this bag as I am heading to Korea for a year and my bike will be my main mode of transportation. First bike rack bag I have bought and thought it was a good deal. The quick release is nice because you can pull it off and take it with you VS having latches, velco or clamps. That part is nice. I can fit my uniform, combat boots, under garments and 2 meals in it. Might sound like a lot, but it's really not. I wish it was bigger. I am able to go to the grocery and get some items to last me a few days. You could prolly get a weeks worth depending on how/what you eat. The side compartments are useless unless you use the fold-out bags. If you don't care about the quick slide-in option (have to have a TOPEAK bike rack) I would pass on this bag (and rack for that matter) and get a more generic bag and rack. You will save 50-70% unless you are buying 3-5000 CU bag.
That being said, if you just want to toss your wallet, keys, cellphone, snacks, few bottles of water and some extra clothes or something this bag is awesome. The bottle holder on the rear of the bag is really nice as right now my bike only has one water bottle holder. I will have 4 on the bike and use this one for long hauls with my 100oz CamelBak strapped to the top of the bag.

Topeak DXP Trunk Bag, April 30, 2012
By Bay Area Robert
|
|
This is an ideal bag for me, it is easy to mount and remove, it had adequate room to hold my tools, pump, spare tube, patch kit, first aid kit, wallet, keys, camera, and the fold out panniers are handy for carrying bulky items. I like this bag, once I arrive at my destination, I place my water bottle on it, lock my bike, and am able to take all of my valuables, and carry it using the shoulder strap. I recommend this bag over the others, it has the most utility.

Very well made product --, April 21, 2012

This product is very well made. Impressively well put together! If you need storage for your bike, and this one fits, I don't think you'll be anything but impressed with the quality of the material in the bag. Zipper also works just fine; doesn't get caught on anything. Topeak makes great products (I have no connection to Topeak, just satisfied with their bike products!) --

MTX Trunk Bag EXP, April 20, 2012
By BikeGuy
|
|
I have a Topeak MTX-EXP trunk bag, that has a design flaw in the rear of the bag where the rear light can be attacheed. The problem is that the bag is to long for the Tracking system under the bag or vise-versa . Over a short period of time the back begins to sag, and curl under the rail system where there is no support, CAUSING THE REAR LIGHT TO POINT TOWARD THE GROUND AND NOT AT THE TRAFFIC BEHIND YOU!! MIGHT AS WELL NOT EVEN HAVE A LIGHT. I contacted Topeak's Tech department to make them aware of the problem, they said they would call me back, and they never did?? REI stood behind the product, and gave me a new bag unfortunately it did the same thing again.

Bigger than I expected!, March 20, 2012
By Guido

|
I ordered the Topeak MTX trunk bag and Explorer bike rack together. I really like the modular design and the dove tailed rack that locks in the bag to the rack. Slides in and out easily, but stays secured in place. I did not realize how much additional storage was in the 2 side panniers, and the top unzips and expands for more storage, too! Yet, it still tucks nicely behind the seat, and removes easily when you don't need it, or to carry with you.
My only concern is the durability of the small zippers, but so far I am very happy with it.

Amazing bag, March 9, 2012
By Hawkeye

I purchased this bag for the winter commute. I filled the bag with my work uniform of a shirt, sweater, pants, and undershirt (keep in mind I'm a 3X guy) and still had room for my size 12 Magnum boots. Also kept my lunch in the other pocket. Through rain, snow, and sleet, the bag kept all of my supplies dry. I loved the bag so much that I purchased the rack and bag for my wife just recently.

OK but there's a better model that's still available (For now), March 9, 2012
By vilago (Elkton, Maryland United States)

This bag is OK, but is inferior to the Topeak "DX" (name is sort of a misnomer, the DX on topeak's website doesn't have the side panniers). The DX was replaced by this model, the DXP, but the DX is still available on amazon as of 3/9/12. It's larger, has a storage compartment for smaller items, and only costs 3 bucks more. It basically retains all the features of this model, but with more (and more useful) storage space in the main compartment. See my review on the product page here: Topeak MTX Trunk Bag DX with Side Panniers
This isn't a bad bag, but feature-per-feature and value, isn't quite as good as the "DX"

Eminently Useful, February 21, 2012
By Flandry (Orbiting Hermes)
|
|
I bought this on a whim when it was on sale at REI shortly after buying the Topeak Super Tourist Tubular Bicycle Trunk Rack DX with Side Bar for my touring bike. Although there are a lot of reviews, because i've now had it for over two years i feel i can contribute something new.
Let me start by saying it is an extremely useful piece of equipment for a utility biker. It's not much use for touring or for use on "poodle bikes" (not that you'd find a rear rack on a skinny-tired carbon racer, anyway), but for those who view a bike as a mode of transportation, this is an essential tool. Here's my input, take it for what it's worth.
Pros: * very well-built with strong stitching and zippers. I have loaded the panniers and top compartment so heavily several times that i was sure the zippers or seams were going to break, but it's all still as good as new to my eye after a couple years of use and abuse. * very fast and easy to attach and remove from the bike if you have one of the DX Topeak racks * good space; with the fold-down panniers, it can be a stellar grocery-getter or laundry day lugger * useful water bottle pocket and rear blinky loop * attractive design (for what it is it looks pretty classy) * well-insulated and relatively waterproof
Cons: * the expansion top is a gimmick i could do without. It's not that i don't sometimes use the space, it's that i'm constantly grabbing the wrong zipper pull (the one that unzips the expansion rather than the one that opens the top) and don't see it as a problem to have the expansion permanently. I'd rather not have the extra weight and complexity. * the shock cord web and mesh pocket on top isn't very useful as-is. The handle itself gets in the way of using the top for serious storage. This leads us to... * the top handle is sooo poorly placed! Because it's attached to the top of the bag, it only works when the bag is zipped closed, making it very awkward to carry and use (e.g. in a store). It's also a good thing the zippers are strong or they would break from the stress when carrying it loaded.
The first con could be resolved if Topeak just made the bag a couple inches higher all around to yield about the same volume as when "expanded", and leave it at that.
The last two points could both be resolved by attaching the two webbing handles slightly further apart, to the top edges of the bag instead of the top flap. This would both facilitate putting a load on top of the bag (using the mesh or shock cord to secure it) and allow the bag to be carried when open or closed and also not put strain on the zipper.
To conclude, this is a fantastic bag with a few flaws. I highly recommend it to anyone with a DX rear rack who ever carries things on their bike. A lady at a garden party i biked to asked about it and mentioned she had trouble carrying her groceries in her basket. When i showed her the zip-out panniers, it blew her mind.

Best Bag on the Market!, February 10, 2012
By Bill
|
|
To be honest, I have been having one of these for a couple of years, and ordered this one for my wife's bike. I truly believe this is the best all around bag you can get for your money. The way it mounts is the easiest ON/OFF your going to find and the total amount of space you have available for storage vs. the small footprint when your not using the panniers is just outstanding.
You do need a rack with the MTX mounting system for this bag to work. I have a few different bikes, with different types of topeak racks, and the easiest rack I have found to use is the Topeak QR Beam Rack MTX Bicycle Rack
If you need a great carrying system on your bike, you've found it.

Excellent rack / trunk bag, December 15, 2011
By Ben
|
|
No complaints whatsoever. Rail system is great. Large option is the right size- i wouldn't go smaller for my needs. Fabrication is perfect with no minor defects. Make sure you get the super version of the panier rack. Also, to hold the fold out paniers against the rack there is an elastic cord / drawstring so you need a rack that can handle that. Note, normal paniers are bigger than these fold out paniers- have a think about what you need. I usually only use the trunk bag and don't fold out the paniers. Sometimes i fold them out and put a laptop in one and works great. I leave my tool pouch in the back pocket. I use the trunk bag on both bikes but only fold out paniers when carrier heavier loads on my flat bar bike with discs. I bought these together; Topeak QR Beam Rack MTX Bicycle Rack, Topeak Super Tourist Tubular Bicycle Trunk Rack DX with Side Bar for Disc Brake Bikes, Topeak MTX Trunk Bag DXP Bicycle Trunk Bag with Rigid Molded Panels.

Topeak MTX Trunk Bag DXP Bicycle Trunk Bag with Rigid Molded Panels Excellent bike bag with ample storage in foldout side panniers. Easy to put on and off a Topeak rack. I did have to buy side bars for the rack to be able to use the panniers. It is relatively light weight. Has a place for an extra water bottle for long trips.

I almost bought this MTX bag from REI....but didn't. I think this is totally awesome for a bag and it fits and works just like I want it to do. The price from the seller I bought mine from was 1/3 the cost of the local retail REI store. Good lord, how much money are they making on these bags?!?!?!
