The real thing...., January 22, 2010
By Ranger (Columbus, MS USA)

this 512 GI Canteen cup is the real thing. I was in the USARMY and I used this same type of Canteen cup for the entire time I was in the service. The Modern soldiers are getting away from useing them. But let me tell you the possiblities with this thing is endless. Just recently when I seperated from service and returned home my older brother, that is obcessed with anything military and a huge fan of Bear Grylles, Absolutely went wild over all my gear and was really interested in my canteen/canteen cup/Canteen Carrier. After introducing me to the Bear Grylles serries and saw his enthusiasim for survival he asked me to teach him how to do what "Bear" does. But for some reason he really wanted my canteen cup. So I came here to amazon and ordered the one you are looking at now. On his 36th birthday the cup showed up the day prior and I was the first to look at it to make sure it was like my real military issue. It was. of course mine was a lot more shinyer than his new one but mine had been in use for probaly 30 or so years.
If you are looking for this kind of product, get this one on this page. If you do you WILL BE GETTING MILITARY ISSUE EQUIPTMENT. I also suggest you going and buying the following;
- 1 qt Canteen (plastic)
- 1 qt Canteen Cup
- 1 qt Cammo Canteen Cover
- at least 2 or preferably more, "Alice Clips"
to attatch to your belt or gear
- 1 pistol belt
Canteen fits into the Canteen cup, which fits into the Canteen Carior, the alice clips are attatched to the back of the carrior, and the alice clips attatch the rig to your pistol belt.
If anyone has any further questions about military gear dont hesitate to send me a letter.

Great product, October 12, 2010
By M. (Texas)

I'm amending my initial review as it was posted in haste. This product is great and I recommend its purchase to anyone in need of a good camp cup. An excellent buy for the lightweight backpacker who wants to keep gear at a minimum, as this cup serves as a cooking vessel and eating bowl. I also recommend the silicone lid that is sold for this product; helps water boil faster and will keep the bugs out.

Warning! Not the real deal, October 12, 2010
By M. (Texas)
|
|
First, I'd like to begin this review by stating that I would give this a half-star, if the option were available.
I got this item in the mail and was immediately surprised to find that the entire cup is covered in what appears to be some type of powder-coat, or epoxy paint of some sort. Turning the cup over, I noticed the big "Made in China" sticker that further punched me in the gut, boldly claiming, "I am NOT an authentic military issue canteen-cup, nor should I be used for food or water preparation due to my layer of paint of an unknown chemical composition. Use me at your own risk!"
Seriously, most of us buy these with the intention of preparing water and food in them, yet here they are coated in some sort of Chinese mystery paint, which contains God-knows-what chemically, possibly lead, arsenic, and all manner of toxic industrial waste prducts.
I should have known better when the description stated "G.I. TYPE", not G.I. issue. Ah well, live and learn. I guess this will make a fine paint cup.

great cup, but dont buy the suggested pair, May 2, 2010
By Jonathan Thompson

|
This cup works fine and dandy. Just dont buy the suggested amazon pairing with the rothco 140 gi style canteen and canteen cover. The cup will not fit in the cover. Maybe if you grind the top edge of the cup it would, but im kinda disappointed with amazon for recommending the duo.

This IS STAINLESS STEEL!!!, October 25, 2010
By mntechgeek (Minneapolis, MN USA)
|
|
This IS stainless steel! There is NO baked on finish that is "toxic".
I like many others felt this product was cheap garbage when I opened the package. I saw the made in china sticker and instantly thought the finish was baked on based on its appearance and country of origin. I was disappointed, but I weld and know finishes and metals, and so I decided to test the cup:
First thing I did was boil water in it on the stove for 5 min... no flaking. I thought, ok its a good baked on finish and they ensured it will perform to their product's intended use. So then I took it outside and used the mapp torch on it. The whole bottom was cherry red and no flaking or more importantly burning! Then I repeated flame to the inside of the cup after dousing with water. Again, it was cherry red and no visible flaking or burning!! All along in the process of boiling water and heating the cup with the torch I never experienced noxious fumes or any strange smells. Then I went to the final test, I took 220 wet/dry paper out and sanded the inside bottom... lo and behold it looks like my stainless steel sink now! Again no paint dust or flecks were in the bottom after sanding just normal metal easily cleaned out with water. I also tested for aluminum and its not, nor does it dent easily like aluminum as I tried that approach as well. Therefore, I conclude that this is indeed stainless steel.
Again, this IS STAINLESS STEEL!!! It is just not polished like sinks, pots, and knives are, take out your sandpaper or steel wool and you'll have a shiny looking canteen cup. I suspect that is how they save money on this cup by not polishing it. Its hard to find a canteen cup not made by the parent company that makes these and this is a good price compared to other stores that gouge you on these things, as the originals are getting hard to find.

Product is very durable. I used this for backpacking and I boiled water twice for meal packets and also ate instant soup out of it and then made instant mashed potatoes out of it. This product is perfect for me.

proven and trusted friend, December 5, 2009

I got out of the army in the 80's. The canteen "system" of canteen/cup/stove all on your hip or in your pack is just plain awesome. The cup is amazing.
Mine has been over countless fires, bringing me warmth/comfort/solace/food(I eat out of mine a lot)/even used it for collecting worms once on a trip when I decided I wanted to catch dinner more than keep trying my lures that day - worms worked and cup was great.
I really will not be without one. My family has one in every one of their 'go bags' in the vehicles and I carry one in my daily backpack - the whole system of canteen/cup/stove - it's just too useful and easy to pack not to have around.
My daily use one is blackened by flame, scratched from utensils and cleanings, and has a few dents from drops on rocks, but it's never let me down. I have a small "ditch bag" on my waist when I canoe in case I get separated from my other stuff - the canteen system is a part of that belt set up too - worst case, I can live without it, but it sure makes life better with it - this cup is an integral part of this system.

GI-style, made in China rip-off, December 20, 2010
By Alonso Alvarez de Araya
|
|
Well, I wanted to believe in it. I should have known better.
I was looking for a GI canteen cup and I found in Amazon this Rothco thing. I went and bought the set; when they arrive, in two different packages from two separate vendors, I found that everything was made in China. The cup is coated with a grayish paint without a stainless steel seal anywhere to be found and the stove stand was an ugly aluminum--also made in China--contraption.
Worst of all, the cup does not fit into the stove!
A total rip-off. Stay away from these vendors.

REAL vs. FAKE, May 26, 2011
By kylemag
|
|
I have read many reviews regarding these "G.I. Type" canteen cups. Many people have proven and/or claimed that these were not, in fact, the Military issued canteen cups. I did not purchase mine from amazon but I will tell you where to get the 100% genuine ones (posted below) and how to tell the fakes.
First, if it happens to say "Made in China," or Japan, or any other country besides the US, obviously it is not genuine. Next, if NO MARKINGS are visable at all, chances are it is not of US origin. In addition, these will not be a good "kidney" shaped cup that will fit the military canteens properly and perfectly. Also, you can just use common knowledge and expectations from this product and judge the quality of a US made product vs. a shotty overseas product. However, it IS all about quality control and not where it is made. But in this case, the quality is in the US made product.
These "winged" style cups, if genuine, have markings (NOT ALWAYS SAYING U.S. MADE of "U.S.") in between the two wings. Sometimes, only the manufacturer's initials will be present with the date, and sometimes it was be occompanied by the "US" marking. As previously stated, usually, there will be a date as well, indicating when it was produced. Also, you will be able to notice the quality of the steel as opposed to just a stainless-esque coating. Once again, DON'T PANIC IF IT DOESN'T SAY "US." Not all of them do. Just look for the date and some sort of initials of the manufacturer.
And here is where you can find the real one with no issues, but it is more money and you really do pay for what you pay for:

This item is a TOY and smells TOXIC!, May 11, 2011
By Jolliana (KS USA)
|
|
I ordered two. I received one. The one I recieved stinks to high heaven and smells toxic. No way would I cook with this thing! It smells horrible, has some sort of toxic smelling coating on it, and has a sticker on it that says "MADE IN CHINA". I find it odd that Rothco would farm out the creation of Military Issue items to China. But the kicker of it all? The invoice I recieved states that this item is a TOY!
I shudder at the thought of innocent people actually cooking with a TOY that was MADE IN CHINA while thinking they are using a standard military issue item!! The color of the coating has changed where my fingers have touched the item and it leaves a toxic smell on my fingers, not to mention a dark residue. According to the invoice, the items that were shipped to me came from Makais dot com (Reference picture) but when I went to leave seller feedback it pulled up BIGFLYSPORTS.
I contacted Amazon and told them that the product was represented as a Military Supplier's manufactured item, but I recieved a TOY. Nowhere on the title or description of the product page does it say this is a toy. They gave me a full refund, including refunded postage, and are sending me a return label.

Made in China knockoff..., May 19, 2010
By Mike (Cupertino, CA USA)
|
|
Just wanted all to be aware that this is not a US made GI issue canteen cup, rather it is "GI Type" knockoff with a "Made in China" sticker on the bottom. I was a little disappointed and had I known that, I probably would have looked around more for a true GI issue product. In spite of that, it appears to be well constructed/suitable to the task.
As for questions on its its finish, it is medium rough sandblasted/beadblasted finish that will eventually polish/smooth out in wear areas.
The cup is not aluminum (as other folks have stated in their reviews), it is indeed stainless steel (magnet won't stick to it) as per item description.

Powder coated metal, NOT STAINLESS STEEL, March 29, 2011
By Jay
|
|
I'm not sure where these people are coming from saying this is the real deal. This item could not be further from the truth. This canteen cup is not stainless steel in any way shape or form... its powder coated steel at best. If this truly was stainless steel there would be no need for paint.
Do not buy this product, and spend a couple extra dollars getting a real stainless steel cup.

Not bad and it's stainless steel, March 20, 2011
By a_tech_guy (Walkersville, MD United States)
|
|
OK, for those that don't think it's stainless steel, well it is. However, it comes with a coat of something that is very pale grey from the factory. It's made in China and not the US. So, I knew it was going to be made in China before I got it, but I was still made with the coating. I took a Brillo pad, sand paper, and a metal brush to it. I got it pretty clean within about an hour. I then baked it on the grill while I was grilling a steak. I wanted to make sure I got everything off from the factory and think I was pretty successful. Be prepared for some work.
We then took 2 cups my son and I on a 2 day camping trip and the cup is what we used the entire time. It's not double walled so you will burn the h$ll out of you if you are not careful. Heats up very fast, but loses the heat just as fast because it's not double walled. I think you would be better served getting a newer double walled cup.
I wanted this because it's what I used in the Army. However, there are better and more modern designs out there. The good thing about this cup is you probably will keep it for 20-30 years. You'll lose it before you break it. Just throw it into your bag and you've got a cup, pot, and shave kit minus razor, and a signaling device. Not bad.

Must have item, December 20, 2010
By Brian H. Ellis (NJ, USA)
|

This is one of those pieces of equipment the military got right! during my latest tours overseas I took my canteen cup along even though we were not carrying canteens. Try heating up water in your Camelback! I keep one with my "go bag" along with an Esbit heater stove to heat up water, soup etc. There is a small stove which goes on the bottom of the canteen cup but I lost mine years ago. I don't think you'll be disapointed with a canteen cup even if you're using some kind of water bladder.

Good cup for field work., October 2, 2010
By Diego Raigoza Nuņez (Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico)
|
|
I bought this cup to pair it with this canteen Rothco 422 G.I. Style Aluminum Canteen and Cover, 1 Quart.
It matches perfectly the canteen, both can be carried in the same package.
This cup is stainless steel and so far I haven't had any problems with it. It has worked well for me. The butterfly handle is really handy for grabbing the cup as you would grab a coffe cup by the handle, though grabbing it as if it didn't have them is not a problem either, but the handles come in handy (pun intended) if you need to boil water or cook something with it, you could burn your hands if you grab the cup.
The cup's intake capacity is 500 mililiters give or take, if I fill it using my canteen, I still have some water left in the canteen. Good to ration water supply when you are far from a water source or you need to share water with someone else and you don't want them to drink from your canteen directly.
It's resistant, I've packed it for countless trips to the outdoors and it doesn't have any dents despite the fact it has to share space with lenses, cameras and other stuff I sometimes pack.
One aspect that wonders me of this cup but I can't explain is the fact that it dries quickly. I don't know if it's the weather here or the material or what, but whenever I drink water in it, it dries fast, sometimes less than five minutes, with no traces that a liquid was ever there.
The only gripe you could have with it is the fact that seems that over time, the cup develops a dark color, mine was shiny gray when I got it but now it's dark gray. I don't mind really since it's meant to be used out there, it's not a jewel that needs to be kept clean and shiny always.
Some people have mentioned this is a military issue cup, and that would explain just how tough it is.
If you need a cup and a canteen to go with it, I suggest you take a look at this one and the canteen I linked to, they seem to be made for each other, since they fit perfectly. One thing though, I have to use the canteen cover in order to be able to pair the cup with the canteen, because if I remove it and just put the canteen inside the cup, the canteen is loose and won't attach to the cup. The cover acts like a kind of gasket.
This canteen will certainly be handy if you go frequently to the outdoors. In the field it's where it shines. I recommend it.

Not To Be Used For Food Preparation/Cooking, February 24, 2011
By Nicholas A. Fraser (Buffalo Grove, IL USA)
|
|
This cup is only a replica version and is not a standard issue military cup. This cup has some unknown coating applied to it and is not safe for preparing food in. I went to Best Glide (ASE) to purchase a genuine military issue cup which is obviously of better quality and does not have any coating applied to it.

Cheap but Functional., May 16, 2010
By A. Foust (Indiana, USA)
|
|
I used to have an old army issue canteen cup, the kind with the fold-under handle, and it worked great. I lost it about a year ago and bought this one as a replacement. The wire handle works well enough but it looks like it could get bent with the abuse that comes to camping gear. As for the finish, when I first got it I thought it was some kinda powder coat, it had a dull silver appearance that looked like paint. After taking some steel wool to it and scrubbing vigorously, it seems it's not a coat, just a really rough finish from the manufacturing process. Definately looks more crude than my old cup but it is functional, and at a decent price. It fits snug around my plastic canteen and inside a standard canteen cover. It may not be pretty but it'll get the job done.

Good as the original, August 19, 2011
By Daniel R. Hansen (Saint Paul, Minnesota United States)
|
|
No, this isn't the same thing I lugged around in the desert when I was in the Marines. Is it just as good? Yeah. Has been subjected to extreme abuse and neglect in the past few weeks since I bought it and has done just fine. Don't know what else I can add. I even put it over my gas stove with water in it on high and boiled it dry. Not a problem. Used every chemical I've got (I have a lot) to see if I could take off a finish, nothing. Then I crimped a little edge a bit and bent it back. No breaking of outside skin like would happen with something just baked on.
Not sure what others got, but this thing will work for me until I lose it or something similar.

Appears to be good quality (non magnetic) stainless with a mat finish. At first I thought that it was not stainless at all but after further investigation I discovered that stainless steel does not necessarily mean that it is magnetic.

Had 2 of these beauties and bought another for my dog. We use them for food/drinks whatever. The dog uses hers to just drink from, it's shape works perfect. Cooking is breeze due to it's unique shape, it is very stable when placed in the fire. Cheap and functional. Sprayed mine w/grill paint to reduce clean up.

Chinese but not a total bust, June 10, 2011
By Weston
|
|
READ ENTIRE REVIEW, IMPORTANT SAFETY INFO.
I recieved this on time but was very concerned, as were others, about this item. It says stainless steel in the description but it comes with a weird powder coating on it. I'm not sure why stainless steel needs a powder coating over it. I sanded the coating off the bottom and it looks to be stainless steel under it, so i suppose with some elbow greas you can expose the true stainless steel. My main concern was if it was safe or not since it came with a big "Made in China" sticker on it. That combined with the powder coating had me concerned if it was safe to eat and drink our of. So I picked up a Lead Surface Test kit at work and tested this cup 4 different times. i tested the powder coating twice and i tested the exposed metal under the coating twice, all of these tests in a different spot. I am glad to say that all 4 tests were negative for lead, and this cup seems perfectly safe to use unless the coating starts to come off. If it does start to come off I would say just sand it all off and give yourself a basically new cup.

Works but the finish is rough, September 14, 2009
By Gamer Geek (Renton, Wa United States)
|
|
This is a good solid canteen cup but I have one gripe. The finish is kind of rough and it has very high friction. Guess that's good if you set it on a stove. It won't slide off but it's not as comfortable to drink out of as it would be if the finish were smooth. My canteen cup back in my army days would be much better than this one. The smooth finish on those cups makes it easier to clean as well. Maybe I'll pick one up from Army surplus.

Being a Stainless Steel is already a plus. Aluminum is a poisonous metal when ingested from.
It's sturdy and does its job.
The only downside of this product that it gets very dirty from the fire but gives it a character :)

Happy Camper/Hiker, September 21, 2009
By J.C. Bednar (Junction City, KS USA)
|
|
This is the standard U.S. Army issue canteen cup made out of aluminum. You can use this cup to drink out of, warm some water, warm some soup, wash/shave out of, or do whatever your imagination can think of. This canteen cup is very sturdy, pert near impossible to destroy. The handles are made of sturdy wire but are prone to damage (they do not damage easily though). Just some advice: do not put this canteen cup inside a micro-wave like I did once to warm up some soup. Sparks and flames will fly. Did not know that a micro-wave can make aluminum do that. Price is reasonable for this item; may be priced a little higher at your local surplus stores (espaecially for a brand new cup). The cup was made to fit the bottom of the Army standard issue plastic canteen and then both can be inserted into the standard army issue canteen cover. Good item.

Not US built - canteen stove incompatable, January 24, 2012
By Elon Garfinkel (Earth)
|
|
While I was hoping to keep this item, it will be going back in the morning. If you only need a cup to add to your plastic canteen, this item is fine. That is the only reason for a second star. It fits below, and you can go on your merry way. If you plan to cook in this vessel, that's a different story. US canteen stoves are tapered on the bottom to fit the US metal canteen cups. This item is not tapered at the bottom. the base is too wide to fit properly. There is no stamp on the handle base stating "US(two digit year code)"

This canteen cup is exactly as advertised. Easy to use and great for survival camping. It boils water well. Fold the butterfly handles out, and put the concave side toward your fire or hot coals. It's a definite must-have and a much simpler solution to the pots and pans in most commercially made mess kits.

wow, what a disappointment, October 26, 2011

this is my first review, only because I was so disappointed at the painted, made in China piece of crap this thing was. I was anxiously awaiting it and was just so let down when I opened it.Next task on my list is to return it.

coated over stainless steel, not real., September 28, 2010
By bluedog (Illinois)

Contact seller before you purchase this item. Mine arrived and it was a grey color? When I looked inside there were chips taken out, under the ""chips"" was the stainless steel. I could tell because stainless steel has a metal look that is not mistakable. The ""chips"" looked like some kind of grey coating, don't want to say paint, but not pure SS as SS doesn't chip away. Would hate to see anyone boil water in the cup and have ""chips"" of whatever?? dangerous substance mixing with water you think you purifying. Maybe I got a dud or a fake, please be careful. I contacted dentalBookshop to inform them since I was unable to contact seller directly about this. I hope they check into this, don't want to see anyone hurt or possibly poisoned if using this to boil water or ?? Better safe than sorry. Still looking for a quality replacement for this item, maybe I'll go to military store across town & see US issue up close!

512GI Type Stainless Steel Canteen Cup, September 17, 2011
By John F. Deaton
|
|
Recieved this item along with a canteen and cover .Iwas not too happy with the cantee and especially the cover. Why? Well the canteen cup fits over the canteen fine .However when you try to slide them both into the cover they only slide in bout 3/4 of the way so it's impossible to snap the snaps on the cover.I however am determined to get the intended use out of these Items so i just slide the canteen cup up on the Outside of the cover with the canteen inside it thus leaving the cup outside.Ihave looped 550 cord thru the handles of the cup and looped it around the cap of the canteen so it should hold .This is not how these Items should fit as any of you know that were issued these Items during service years ago.Time will tell if the cup will last out on the trail useing my pocket rocket stove to heat up food.Over all the cup seems ok But even it dosent have the "FEEL" of my original issue. So 4 stars unless the cup fails then ill review again.

Great for a Survival pack, May 17, 2011
By Juan Castro
|
|
I use this for my survival pack. That is a pack full of stuff I think I'll need when the s.... hits the fan. It will do ok when camping or hiking although this might be too heavy for your trip. Obviously it will fit great with the standard G.I. Water canteen.

As simple as it gets, April 29, 2011

A metal cup for the Rothco 422 G.I. Style Aluminum Canteen and Cover, 1 Quart. Just slip the canteen in, with the cover, and it's good to go. You do lose the belt loop from the canteen cover, but you can still loop your belt around the handles. I'm actually very impressed with the tolerances. Usually this Chinese made stuff is a little bit off, but the handles work perfectly and have absolutely no play at all, and the canteen and cover slip in so snugly if you pick it up by the canteen, you can't actually shake the cup off.

Not painted or coated!, February 26, 2011
By Adam L. Rogers
|
|
A few that bought this believe it to be coated or painted, this is incorrect. It is just rough casted and unpolished (SS or aluminum). It is not magnetic so it is in fact Stainless or possibly Aluminum. I'm not a metal expert so I couldn't say for certain which. I sanded down the inside and bottom with 100 grit and no paint or other layers werew found, just sandppaper shavings and a fine black metal powder. After a few mins I had the cup polished up to a brushed finish and smooth. Its weight and resistance to flexing at the rim lead me to believe this is in fact stainless. Mid grade stainless and rough casted, but some sandpaper and elbow grease will get this cup signaling down your rescuers. Sand the bottom of the cup and you will see! 4 out of 5 since the authentic cup I had in the service was higher grade metal and polished SS.

Nice cup, December 29, 2010
By firemanskp
|
|
Just received this cup...and it is very nice...even tho this is made in china.
Also...beware, it had a coating all over it, from manufacturing...had to scrub it off with brillo pad.
I run a metal stamping plant, so I know what I am talking about....and this needs scrubbed good before use.
Other than that....excellent for the price.

Cool little cup, December 21, 2010
By JakeFab

This fits great on the outside of my military style canteen. I'm also able to put it into my canteen pouch while still holding my canteen like a Russian doll one inside the other. its perfect, great design, I'm loving it, and I'm ready for an adventure.

This thing is great., September 10, 2009

Love this canteen cup, works well. The only negative thing that I can say is that the wire handles and the joints attaching them to the cup could be a little more solidly built (but they're still pretty solid). Would definitely recommend.

durable, but hard to clean, October 21, 2009
By Postdoc (PA)
|
|
The cup seems very durable, but after using it yesterday I can say that the finish is rough enough to make cleaning difficult and to start wearing down the plastic on my canteen. I'll use it until I find something more polished, but overall it's certainly a serviceable cup that looks like it could take a lot of abuse.
Update: Downgraded it to 2 stars from 3 now that I know it won't nest in the standard canteen stove/stand and so isn't the proper size.

Cheap knock off Made in China., February 6, 2012
By JDA70
|
|
This canteen cup is not the real deal. It's a cheap knock of Made in China not the US. It's probably Tin or Aluminum coated with flame retardant paint or not polished to a shiny finish. So I gave it 1 star because it's not Stainless Steel and I don't trust it.

Cheap Chinese junk, January 18, 2012

most certainly NOT stainless steel by any definition. Coated with rough powered something that comes off easily. Would not want to touch any food or water that came out of this, unless you trust Chinese manufacturing safety standards, right?

Absolute GARBAGE, January 16, 2012
By jesica

This is NOT a stainless steel canteen cup! This cup is made in CHINA from some strange metal. The cup is covered in silver paint and reeks of chemicals. It is not safe to boil water in this cup and I'm afraid to even touch it. I am very upset that this was advertised as genuine and will be returning it. Don't buy this!

OK cup, January 7, 2012
By Muddog

This is an OK canteen cup. Just 3 stars because this cup have a larger bottom then the U,S. canteen cup. The U,S. canteen cup stove will not fit over the bottom of this canteen cup but will fit inside and over the canteen.

Not stainless steel, January 5, 2012

Maybe years ago they sold this as stainless steel but not anymore. This has some horrible coating that rubs off in/on your hands. I certainly wouldn't want to cook or drink out of this, i'd probably poison myself.

AGHH get to work!!, January 2, 2012
By Scott

It is made of stainless steel but needs some work done to it. It is painted and needs to be sanded before i trust to use it to boil water. The paint could have lead or other chemicles so i would recommend removing the paint before you drink out of it!! Good but requires work :( but other than that its fine!!

Works great, September 25, 2010
By gryphongirl (CA)

I used this as my combination cup and bowl on a recent backpacking trip. My canteen fit inside the cup well, but I didn't use it that way myself. I have the "Rothco 422 G.I. Style Aluminum Canteen and Cover, 1 Quart" canteen.
The cup is a good size for drinking out of, or holding my meals. I had no problems with it.

absolute rubbish!, January 19, 2012
By jay

i bought this thinking that i could actually use it when i go camping, but that is most certainly not the case. i wouldn't trust eating or drinking from this toxic Chinese piece of garbage. i tried sanding off the layer of painted flakes that come off when you boil water in this cup, and i've been terribly sick for the past couple of days. i'm pretty sure i got sick from breathing in the layer of toxic paint that i sanded off this cup. since then, i threw the cup away. SAVE YOUR MONEY AND DON'T BUY THIS PIECE OF JUNK!! i learned the hard way :/

solid, fits my use, May 18, 2012
By PNWguy

Arrived in a timely fashion. Is as advertised, stainless steel. Plastic mil-issue canteen fits good, with minimal slop. Does not fit my mil-spec stainless canteed (cup is too large). Has held up to several camp-fire-coffee making sessions, and more than one meal on the trail. A good buy, make sure the one you decide to order is Stainless Steel, the aluminum versions deform when placed on a camp-stove or directly on coals for any period of time.

Its ok...if you want to grind it., March 23, 2012
By emagz90
|
|
The canteen itself was covered in a matte gray coating. I had read in a review earlier that it was but i decided to get it anyway. I spent about 3 hours scraping the coating away. its nice and shiny now! safe to use! I recommend lightly power grinding it then using brake cleaner. Wash it out and your good to go. The overall quality of it however i think should make this about 5 bucks cheaper.
