It's acceptable but needs improvement- not bad for the price, November 7, 2009
By Mr. Steve W. Robertson
|
|
I purchased this item for a 10x15 shed. A lot of people of commented on the amount of light this thing throws out so let me start the review with that.
This shed light is powered by 3 AA batteries that get recharged by the solar panel. The solar panel does not provide any direct power for the lights and that is not what it is designed to do. If you expect 3 AA batteries to provide the same amount of power and therefore light as a 120 volt AC shop light you are going to be disappointed in this product, or ANY product that provides light from 3 AA batteries. If you expect it to provide the same amount of light as a flashlight powered by 3AA batteries then this product is going to deliver exactly what you expect out of it. In my 10X15 shed this product delivers about as much light as a night light. The light it emits is an unnatural blue color but it is adequate. It will keep you from tripping over stuff and help you to make out the difference between a lawn mower and a leaf blower in otherwise complete darkness. It is not suitable for performing detailed work and is not a substitute for lighting that would normally require an electrical connection. When used during the day with the shed door open, using this light does not increase the ambient light inside the shed at all- normal daylight completely washes out the shed light. This light is very useful at night.
The product documentation is severely limited but installation is fairly common sense. The screws that come with the unit are inadequate drywall screws and the Phillips heads will strip when you try to drill them into real wood. For some reason it also comes with drywall anchors as if your shed is going to be finished with drywall. If your shed has drywall it probably also has electricity and you wouldn't be reading this review. The product comes with a large threaded L bracket that is not in the documentation. It looks like it can be used as an alternate mounting bracket but you would have to partially disassemble the solar panel to use it. I threw it in the recycling along with the NiCad batteries.
The product comes with 3 AA NiCad batteries. I recommend that you immediately recycle them responsibly upon opening the box and use NiMH batteries. For one, NiCad batteries have a memory effect that modern batteries do not and they are poorly suited to solar chargers due to the charging cycles associated with a dubious power supply. Secondly, the flawed design of this shed light requires you to unscrew the "permanent" mounting in order to change the batteries. While NiCad batteries would have to be replaced annually NiMH batteries should last many years in this configuration and also can supply 6X the amount of power (longer running time) than NiCads.
Another flaw of this product is that the 3/16" cord running from the solar panel to the light unit has an approximately 1/8" plug but unfortunately it has a useless L configured plug that will require you to drill nearly a 1" hole in your shed to fit it through. I'm not sure what was going through the engineer's mind when this ridiculous feature was added but hopefully the manufacturer will fix this problem if the product is ever updated.
While the LED lights in this product have a very long running time (especially if you recycle the NiCad batteries as I recommend) most people don't need to spend hours in their shed. They would go in, fetch what they need, and then turn the light out. This product would be a lot more useful if it provided much more light for a shorter period of time. I think a running time of 1 hour per day is way more than adequate. I would prefer to have 4x the amount of light for 1 hour than I having ¼ the light for 4 hours in a shed light.
I purchased this product knowing all the limitations and I am happy with it. It performs exactly as I expected and it functioned right of the box. Some of the design elements are cheap and you should plan on having upgraded batteries and screws on hand before you attempt to install it. You will not want to unscrew the light and reinstall it to swap out the NiCads later, especially if you attempt to use the cheap included screws that will most certainly strip.
The fact that you have to completely uninstall this unit in order to change the batteries highlights another feature that it is missing. It is not portable at all. A great feature it could have had was to be portable- imagine if the power went out and you knew you had a portable light source in your shed that could be quickly snapped out of its housing and used elsewhere. Or if you had some dead AA batteries you wanted to charge with your solar charger. The manufacturers really missed the boat on this one.

Hit or miss, February 8, 2009
By J. Yoon (Rochester NY)

I can see why there is a dichotomy with the ratings. We purchased two of these for our detached garage. One of the lights gives off a relatively bright light, enough to find one's way around with ease at night. The other light was not as bright. The light has a hi-lo switch, and even on the 'hi' setting, the dud-light gave off only a dim glow. We did not return it for another light because after the hastle of installing this light with the solar panel on the roof, it didn't seem that important to us. For future purchasers, remember to give it a test run before installing.

Got a bright one! Lucky I guess, March 12, 2009
By Vynrod (USA)
|

Reading from the reviews I wasn't expecting much from such a low price solar shed light. I went ahead and ordered anyway and I'm very very pleased with the results. The light itself came almost fully pre-charged which aided in not only knowing how bright it would ultimately be, but also was useful in locating a good spot for it in the shed before permanent mounting.
So out of the box you get a
* solar panel with hardwired 16ft cable
* exterior mounting bracket with swivel feature
* interior light and mounting all in one
* all screws etc
* strange L shaped metal rod which appears to serve no useful purpose due to the design of the mounting bracket!
The light itself is super bright for a solar led; we have a small shed at 6'x 8' and it saturates it with enough light to find even the smallest item or even work in there. I couldn't say how long the light lasts on a single charge however, but it's perfect for popping in and grabbing some tool as the day gets longer. The light has a half/full option where the top row of leds can be switched off to increase the duration that the lights last at the expense of brightness - nice touch. There's also a small red led to indicate that it's charging and comes with a one foot toggle pull string to switch the light on or off.
My only gripe, which was mentioned in another review, was the connector for the panel to the light was L shaped not straight through as shown in the amazon product pic. This meant making a hole about the width of your finger to be able to push the connector into the shed and then having to silicon it all up to make it watertight. If it was a straight connector, the hole would barely be bigger than the cable itself. A surprisingly poorly thought out design given the rest of the product.
But the rest IS perfect and you cannot go wrong for the price.

Cord shorter than stated, October 3, 2008
By Dee (Memphis, TN)
|
|
Advertised as having a 20ft cord...at best it's only 16ft!
Pivot mount for the solar panel is totally useless...very poor design!
There was a 6 inch "L" shaped treaded metal rod included with the hardware with no instuctions on what's it for! The light works well so far...not real bright but good enough to find things.

Solar light, December 15, 2008
By R. Noel (Upper Michigan)
|
|
I purchased this light to put in our outhouse at camp in Upper Michigan.
We do not have electricity at camp and I thought this would be worth a try to get some light. Installed it this summer and it has been working fine since then. On the low setting , 5 LED's, it gives off enough light to take care of business and even read by. The high setting, 10 LED, is better to read by and plently light to light up the outhouse. I was so pleased with how it work I purchased a second on for the storage shed.

Ehh...., November 24, 2008

I wanted something for my garage out in the back yard, thought this would be great since there is no power out there. The light works fine, for now, but it is bovious that it is not constructed well at all. It is no very bright, but enough so you don't trip over stuff. It was very easy to install, and yes, they should have given instructions as to what to do with the metal rod. Took me a minute to figure out that it is an optional brace for the solar panel. If it cost any more, I would pay for the shipping to return it. I would NOT buy another one from this company, but DO PROMOTE the use of solar power in any way possible.

This was a disappointing purchase. First of all, nowhere either in the ad or on the package does it iindicate how much light it gives off. Second, my 10 x 10 shed is still relatively dark.

Rechargeable Solar Panel Shed Light, June 7, 2008

The light arrived today in a timely manner and after testing it it does work. However this light appears to be used. The solar panel is somewhat scratched and all parts of light needed cleaning.

Mounts easily, but I changed the pull string to a ball chain, August 29, 2010
By Scott Yanoff (Wisconsin)
|
|
I purchased this for a playhouse we built for our kids. We wanted some type of lighting so that it would not be completely dark in the playhouse (the size of a shed) in case they played in there at night during the summer or if they even had a sleepover in there. For lighting something the size of a small shed I'd say that the light output is reasonable for 10 LEDs.
The design of this system is mostly intelligent: the cord is long which meant that I could place the solar panel on the roof or side of the house and run the cord inside. It would have been slightly easier if the end of the plug was straight rather than L-shaped because it meant that I had to drill a bigger hole into the side of the playhouse in order to feed the plug through. There are several attachment options for the solar panel. The plastic base that it attaches to allows you to swivel the panel to face any direction, and it also comes with an L-shaped metal arm that could attach to both the bracket and the solar panel itself in case you are configuring it in a tricky spot. I've got the panel attached to the side of the playhouse but facing upward and it charges easily. The design of the charging unit that goes inside the building is smart. First of, it uses rechargeable batteries that can be replaced simply by taking the cover off. No screwdrivers are necessary for this. Thus, if a battery goes bad you can easily replace it. Secondly, the unit has a charging light on it. This meant that I could place the solar panel somewhere and have confidence in permanently attaching it to the building because I could see that it was charging. Also, because the plug actually plugs into the lighting unit, one could theoretically plug this into things other than the LED lighting unit. However, it's a very small plug but if you had matching appliances it could work.
Here are two minor tips I experienced:
1) The unit comes fully charged. I did not realize that there was a charging light on the LED unit so I discharged the batteries by leaving the light on overnight. The light stayed on for 27 straight hours and it gave off its full light for most of that time.
2) The pull cord it comes with is a string. I was hanging this high up in my kids' playhouse so I wanted a longer string and a more durable cord. I took the screws out of the back of the LED unit and found that the string was tied to a lever. Using some tiny pliers I was able to undo the knot in the string. I tied that end to a thread and the other end of the thread to a very thin ball chain that I had. I was then able to feed the ball chain through the level and cap it off with one of those connectors at the end of the ball chain. That way, it would be secure and not go through the hole. The ball chain had a tendency to catch on the lever itself so I took some scotch tape and wrapped it around that part of the ball chain that goes through the lever. I did this after I had fed it through so I had to push some of the ball chain back up but if you can plan properly and do it beforehand, you'll be in even better shape.

Decent and convenient, January 7, 2009
By violencejack (NY)
|
|
The light isn't the brightest but it serves its purpose. The package was a little beat up and there was a crack on the light. Since the light works and it was only cosmetic I kept the unit. I have it in my closet since I don't have any lights there. Having an older house I drilled a hole through the wall so I can attach the solar cell(mounted on my window)to the light inside my closet. The only thing that really bugs me is the angled adapter that plugs into the light. This made it difficult for me and I had to make a larger hole than what I expected to get the power cable through. I figure that if I re-build my room I can install this unit in my shed at a later time.

Decent light; be careful with installation, April 13, 2009
By J. Lu (New York, NY)
|
|
The light output is decent and the installation steps are pretty straightforward. However, there are two issues to take note of.
1) The screws included are not very good. They strip pretty easily. At one point, while trying to attach the light to the wall, the heads stripped badly with the screw only 1/2 way in. I have to use a hacksaw and cut the screw from behind and used my own set of screws.
2) The battery access door is on the back of the light unit. When attached to the wall, you can't get access to the door without unscrewing the entire unit. Normally, you'd need to replace the battery once a year, so unscrewing it from the wall would be a pain. I'm going to look into finding an alternative way to mount the light, which keeps the battery door more accessible.
Aside from these two points, everything else is good and I'm relatively happy with this light.

Night Light Bright, March 3, 2010
By Destiver (California, USA)
|
|
This item provides enough light to not bump into things in the dark, but you won't be finding things in that dark corner of your shed with it. Our shed does not have electricity so this was a welcome addition rather than running electrical to it, I just wish it were a little brighter. It was easy to mount and it comes on every time we pull the cord what more could we ask?

Light runs forever, just not that bright, May 29, 2009
By Bobby McGee (Los Angeles)
|
|
First i would like to say this clearly states "Shed light" but i am currently using it in a small garage. Right out the box the batteries came charged and ready to use, so i first drained them by leaving the light on to see how long it would take to drain then charge. It took maybe about 10 hours for the batteries to drain.... 10 FREAKIN HOURS OF JUICE!! partly due to the fact the LED lights are weak. I would love to see them upgrade to stronger LED's even if it means 1 hour of run time. Who really needs this to be on for 10 hours in a shed/garage? after one sunny day the batteries are charged and the light is ready to be used. I'm sure in a small shed this works really well, in a 10x12ft garage this gives me enough light to locate what i need and be on my way. I might swap out the LED's for stronger ones, but i guess that would defeat the purpose of buying this item which comes as a set (panel and light)

Great product, but has design and marketing mistakes., October 22, 2010
By D. (Waverly, N.Y.)
|
|
I wish that the manufacturer is reading these reviews (it could only be to their advantage). We crossed into a century when the consumer is not only "the king", the decision maker, but the consumer can help products improve a lot (and therefore can bring a lot more money to the owners, inventors and distributors).
Congratulations, first of all, for the efficiency of the solar panel: this small panel (a mono-crystalline one) can charge the batteries by feeding from any ambient (or reflected) light, not only from direct sunlight (it works OK in the shade). It can be placed in any window (on the inside of the window, in any house or apartment), disregarding if there is sun or not that day. Yes, mine is recharging the batteries although I placed the panel in a North window, where I never have direct sunlight.
The product's price is fair. It also helps a lot that it comes with a light indicating when it is really charging. This solar product could become truly great in its future versions, but only if the design, marketing and manufacturing mistakes are corrected.
(1) The light intensity problems come most likely from the "high-low" switch, which is defective. I have the same problem with my order. Sometimes the light is very bright, sometimes only 5 LEDs work, and sometimes the intensity of all is very poor. I believe that this problem can be corrected by opening the light box and checking for poor connections. Perhaps the best would be to replace that switch, or bypassing the switch, for those of you who bought it and have the knowledge.
(2) It helps that it comes with rechargeable batteries, but Ni-Cd (nickel-cadmium) is an old generation. The consumer is forced to replace them with the newer NiMH (nickel-metal hydride) or perhaps lithium-ion, which can have much better capacity. The second design mistake is placing the battery box in the back of the light, forcing the consumer to unscrew the entire light from the ceiling (or from under the cabinet) in order to replace the batteries. The entire system should have a 20-year life, if it is designed correctly.
(3) The light should have been versatile enough to sit on any table, like a desk light (but it is not). It is not practical as a wall light (who wants the LED lights into his/or her eyes?).
(4) The product is shipped in a nice box, with some descriptions in 3 languages, but the text has some mistakes into it. The glass on the panel is not even mentioned anywhere in English -- it is only mentioned in French and Spanish. Why not in English? The one-sheet instructions are truly poor -- it does not even explain how to mount the metal bracket. Most people throw this part away, because they do not understand its usefulness.
(5) Other reviewers described other problems and I am not going to repeat what they said.
These are examples of how design mistakes and poor supervision can fail a product which otherwise would be a great success.

great little light, January 30, 2010
By B. Foster
|
|
Even in Maine, where this little sun in the winter, this works wonderfully. Bought it because of security concerns; appreciate it now because it lights the way for us when we come home after dark. simple to set up, long cord so you can position collector to face sun but put light where you want it. And it is all solar powered. Remember that it is LED lighting so it is not a strong light. Just enough to light your way or intimidate someone who is not supposed to be there.

Reading other reviews, it could have been made better, but hey its GREEN and only about $ 25. If it works for me thru the spring, I will be more than pleased and will have felt I will have gotten my money's worth.

Shed, a Litte Light, December 28, 2009
By RedbugSullivan (Graham, WA USA)
|
|
This is a great light for those spaces you need it. I purchased 2, one for the shed and the other for my feed area. Both work equally well, better than I expected. Mounting was a breeze! The long cord allowed the panel to be situated in a premium spot and the light to be where it was needed the most. The two settings are handy. Full allows me to work further away from the source, and half lasts an amazing amount of time.
I must admit, the shed light has yet to make it into the shed. It is used in the "yet to be wired" shop. The solar panel just sits on the windowsill and I strung the light up and over a cabinet for just enough light to move safely around in the large area (move a box, find a screwdriver). My skeptical son even was amazed at how much light it puts out.
Would I buy more? You bet!

What a piece of JUNK!!!!!! I can see that there are two rows of lights inside, but only one row will light. I won't be buying anything else fron Designers Edge in the future!!

I puchased two of these solar shed lights. I use them in our home. They give off plenty of light to read by. One is mounted on the wall in the bathroom, and gives more than sufficient lighting. I plan to order more. One last thing, the charge on "half power", or half the lighting capacity, lasts throughout the night hours.
Hope this helps.

Just the light I needed, February 19, 2010
By Jed (New York City, NY)
|
|
I put this in my shed and I'm surprised by how well this little light illuminates the whole interior.
I found the screws aren't easy to use like the one to tighten the position of the solar panel. You need to mount the panel but then you can't tighten the screw that holds the solar panel in position. That was a little annoying.
I wouldn't mind a better switch for the light. A hanging string is a little too 1950's for me. I like a switch. I was thinking of even cracking it open and putting my own switch in but in the end I went with the string.
These days I would not get anything but LED for these types of things. The performance is so much better than anything else out there. Very low wattage that last forever.
If you hang the solar panel on the side of the shed I suggest hanging it upside down. It seems to angle better that way and gravity won't work against you.

A JOKE, October 7, 2010
By Larry Karabel (YORK, NEBRASKA, US)
|
|
Light was obviously a return from someone else by the looks of the packaging, torn cardboard with taped up tears. Picture shows that solar panels fill the entire area of solar panel frame. This one doesn't even fill half of the frame with solar panels, the remainder is just black plastic! Broke a finger nail sliding HI/LOW switch to HI only to find out that it wouldn't slide back to LOW at all! The lights would only stay on when I squeezed on the housing, otherwise they would just flicker or go out completely. Overall, the quality of this product is pathetic and cheap and I would not recommend purchasing it.

Good solution for seldom used lighting., December 3, 2009
By Robert A. Oglesbee

This product worked as advertised, and was a great solution for what I needed. The light took a couple days charging to really produce good illumination (as stated in the manual). It works great for cloudy days, dusk/dawn, and night time when you just need a little light to see what you need in your shed. It is not useful as a workbench light unless you are doing small quick jobs.

Easiest thing to install EVER and works great!, June 9, 2011
By lldyson

|
I installed this, took it down (changed my mind about location), and reinstalled it all in about 15 minutes with my crazy 24 month old and 7 month old both underfoot. That never happens. And it works great! Installed it in my chicken coop and it lights up perfectly! The sunniest spot to install the panel only gets direct sunlight in the afternoon, but after only 1 day of being up and running it worked and was nice and bright. I am not sure how long the light would last on, but I don't need it to be on for extended periods of time, so that's a non-issue for me. GREAT!!!

Ordered three of these to use in a barn that does not have electricity. Although they are not large, they are illuminating enough area that I can see what I'm doing without running into the horses in the dark. Even though we've had more rain than sun lately, they seem to charge with no problems. I'm going to order more for my storage sheds.

I must have got a bad one..., February 19, 2011
By T.H. (California)
|
|
I tested this in my small 5x8' shed at night. The light barely illuminated the interior of the shed. I would compare it candlelight actually. The 90 degree plug on the one end on the cord is also a bad idea as you have to drill a 1/2" hole to pass the wire from the outside to the inside. Had it been a straight connection, only a very tiny hole would have had to be drilled. The instructions, as others have said, are poor. Not worth the price so it went back to Amazon.

Designers Edge L-949 10, January 31, 2011

I love this light, it is amazing. I purchased one about 3 years ago and have had it since. It will hold its charge for hours. I now use it in our 12x10 storage unit and it will light up the entire unit. This is perfect if you live in an area with power outage issues during hurricane season. I have been looking for the same one since and this is the first time I have seen this light since I purchased mine.
I am going to buy more so I can continue to save energy and keep my electric bill lower. So glad I found this online.

Installed in a Run-in Shed, January 19, 2011
By Brent R Finley (Purcellville,Virginia,USA)
|
|
I purchased and installed this light this month (January 2011) and so will have to come back with a follow up review, but here are my initial impressions:
We bought this light because we did not want a motion detector, but a pull switch. My wife and I consider the light provided to be more than adequate. We installed this in a run-in shed for horses, in a space where we store hay and blankets, etc. We do not need to engage in fine hand motor skill type work. The space is 5'(w) x 20'(d) x 15'(h). We may install a second light in the actual space where the horses hang out, which is much larger of course, being 30' wide, same depth and height.
Before installation, I noticed that the three rechargeable batteries were AA, and only 600mA a piece. I am marking down the initial score I have given this product due to the provided batteries. I replaced them with Eneloop batteries (purchased from Amazon) which are 2000mA a piece. That will dramatically increase the light time. So far, we have not run the batteries to empty.
We like this product. it was easy to install and does what is says it will do.
I will revisit at the six month point if I remember, which will probably mean that something went wrong.

This item is east to install and use, and is quite practical. How ever if you need a good deal of light in this area, this is not the product for you. My shed is only an 8 foot by 6 foot and i have to move aroubd with it in my hands to provide enough light.

Poor Quality, November 5, 2010
By Dragonfish (Caribbean)
|
|
I purchased 2 of these on the same day. I found them expensive at approximately $25 each, and certainly not worth the quality. They are cheaply assembled, I could tell because one of the lights would go off if you shake it the wrong way because the batteries move out of place slightly. also the light lasts less than 5 hours on a good charge. One of the lights has a loose connection and wont TAKE a charge unless I wrap the cord around the light to hold the wire in the only position where the contact is properly made. This has all led me to conclude that there is too much of a gap between the quality and the price.

I bought this light for a small shed in my back yard. It's perfect for when I need to go into the shed at night. However, if you are looking for a light to do work by, you will most likely need something brighter.

this happenes to be one of the better lights, the solar panel is large enough to keep the lights charged -- throws a so-so beam not very far but for close light it is a good buy.

decent product but amazon sucks, September 6, 2010
By chachi
|

The light is what it is expected to be, a fairly dim light for the shed so you don't run into anything at night. It is not for working by.
Amazon uses independant shipping companies that could care less about speeding down private lanes and spinning tire in your yard. The driver was told to slow down after his anger at having difficulty finding our address, his response was to spin tire and speed down our private dirt lane where ours and our neighbor's kids play and ride their bikes. When we discussed this with Amazon and the shipping company itself, we were basically told to go pound salt. So, the only recourse is to no longer use the Amazon website at all... problem solved.

Designers Edge L-949 10 LED Rechargeable Solar Panel Shed Light ModelI was looking for non-electrical lights for the outdoor shower at my house at the Jersey Shore. I found these units on Amazon.com and purchased two of them. I installed them both in the shower in about 30 minutes and installation was easy. 10 Leds do not provide much light during the daytime, but do provide adequate light when showering at night. They are doing the job!

The light works fine. Bright enough to see easily in a good size area. The extra rod bracket it comes with is not explained anywhere and fairly useless, but the standard setup works fine and easy to install. The string-pull for on/off does seem a bit flimsy.

Good Little Light, July 8, 2010
By Robert S. Dimm (Kona, HI USA)
|
|
I'm using this light for a different reason. My whole house is solar powered but one day while getting ready to go to work a component of my system failed and left me in a pitch black bathroom trying to shave.
So this light was purchased to be installed in my bathroom as an emergency backup and it serves well for that purpose.
I found the light easy to install, as others have mentioned, the cord is actually only 16 feet not 20. The angled power plug which needs to fit through a hole in the wall did make it necessary to dirll a 5/8 inch hole, if it had been straight it may have fit through a 1/4 inch hole.
I agree with other reviewers that say this is "night light" bright. It's adequate for my small bathroom, I tried getting ready for work using only this light and had no difficulties until it was time to shave, it was possible but I really couldn't see how well I had done until I turned on another light. So it's bright eneough to move around and get things done but not bright eneough for any detail work.
The box says it will only last two hours on the high level and four hours on the low level. I think it would probably last longer if you were using it in a dark place but the solar panel still in the sun.
Interestingly, this light puts out less light than my two LED headband style light but the light is diffused through out the room where the headband light is more focused
Pros: Easy fo install
It will always be charged and ready to use.
It's only $25
Cons: Angled power plug needed bigger hole
Not as bright as I was hoping but the price is right for what you get.
No explanation for the "L" bracket.
And Thanks to the person that explained the mysterious "L" bracket, it now makes sense but I wasted some time trying to figure out what it was for even after I saw where it fit in the base.

Excellent performance so far, May 13, 2010
By S. Anwar (Calgary, AB Canada)
|
|
Bought it from a local store in last week. I am amazed so far. Light is bright. Also, the 2 power consumption setting makes it even better. Usually I put it on half power (5 LED). It says in 5 LED mode, it will run for 4 hour. But I found the LEDs are still producing enough light even after 6 hours! I reckon it's because of summer, when you have enough day light to charge.
Another good thing is the charge indicator shows active even it is a dark cloudy day! I believe it means it is charging in any day light condition. Cool! Before to buy this light, I have emailed the manufacturer asking whether this light will charge in any day light condition, but they haven't got back to me. I assume they might not know the answer! May be they are not the manufacturer of the solar panel. Well, that's not the main issue here. I am satisfied up to now. But, it will be interesting to see how well it performs during winter season.

Works Great thing of buying more of them, March 30, 2010
By Ty Beck (Westfield, Indiana)

It really works great. I use it a light our staircase going to the basement. I run line outside and put the solar panel on a pole use U brackets i pick up from lowes. The U bracket are the one with nuts on them. The light is bright. I also use Velco to mount it to the wall so don't wont to put holes in the wall. Ok About the L bracket i email the company the said this. " Thank you for contacting us. The L bracket can be used as a clamp mount if you do not have an area to do a drill mount. If you would like some help understanding how to use that bracket you can contact our Parts and Service Department at 425-637-9601 M-F 8-4:30 Pacific time. " I'm think of buying more of them. Would have been nice if the light had a timer on it.
hope my review helps you and other ways you can use it.

Pleased with the performance, February 12, 2010

I purchased this over the holidays and put this in my dad's shed. It was very easy to install and once it charged I was pleasantly surprised with the performance. Although it's not a light that you would work by, in my father's 12x15 shed it lit it up quite nicely so that you could easily see everything inside. I plan on purchasing one of these for my shed also.

6 inch L bracket, January 25, 2010
By dd in tx
|
|
Ordered the solar light in December 09, the 6 inch "L' bracket is in the package but with no instructions. If you will look closely at the grey plastic mounting bracket one of the slots has a flat side. Slide the L bracket into the hole with flat side, is it used to "hang" over a 2X4 or other support and tighten with the nut run down on the threads instead of using screws to secure the base. Used the solar light in our camphouse- "Alamo". It had charged for several weeks, to be honest it worked great, we had more than enough light with the 5 led lights on. We turned the light on and off as needed so I cannot attest to the amount of run time we will have overall. I do recommend this product. We used a couple of the battery powered "candles"-they actually flicker- ($5)from Walmart as night lights around the door and outside to see when getting up during the night.
Happy in South Texas

Great light for the shed!, October 22, 2009
By Nick Ryan (Orange Country, California)
|
|
This is a great light for the shed. It has a good pull switch which is easy to use. The extension cord from the solar panel is quite long and that makes it usefully if you have a large shed. I have the settings on this for the 10 LEDs because I don't spend that much time in the shed. When I do go in the shed then I want as much light as these 10 LEDs give. If you have the light on in the daytime then you can not really tell that it is on but you can tell when it is pitch black in there. The light is a white bluish light which is great because it does not attract any bugs. The light is well made and it looks like it can stand a few drops. I like how there is a indicator on the light when it is getting charged by the sun. When the sun is setting the light is still gets charged a little. The red indicator slowly dims until the sun is completely gone. I would of also liked if the end of the cord had some kind of a glowing substance on it. It is hard to find unless you have it right by the entrance of the shed.

works fine if you replace the NiCd batteries with NiMH batteries, December 15, 2011
By Chris C. (Atlanta, GA, USA)
|
|
I'd like to second the review by "Mr. Steve W. Robertson" here, the highest rated review of this product. This product has its share of minor problems, but for the most part it works just fine and is CHEAP!
I installed it this spring, and 6 months later on the nose it stopped working. It would work during the day when the solar energy was flowing, but not at night when it would rely on the batteries. So I did the NiMH battery replacement that's been recommended here. Hooray, a second life for those AA NiMH batteries that I stopped using a couple years ago! The light works great again, and I'm pretty sure it's brighter than before.
Let's see how it looks in another six months ... the NiMH batteries should hold up better than the NiCd batteries.

not so good, July 5, 2011
By LLB (Bangor, CA)
|
|
We first off Amazon shiiped with a company called Ontrac. They marked my shipment as delivered on the porch 7 days before they actually delivered it. The solar panel was sliding around inside of the package. The directions don't tell you what to do with an L shaped threaded bolt in the package. You can see where it goes, it will only fit one place but why. No purpose that I can see. Why do you have a 6 inch bolt hanging off of a platic piece that doesn't hold it to the shed or serve a purpose.
It works, the charge light lit up when I took it out in the sun. The LED lights are bright. The mounting hardware is cheap plastic and will fall apart in the sun. I give it one season. I'll let you know how it lasts.

Solar Light Review, July 25, 2011
By 484dan

|
Before purchasing this light, I read a lot of poor reviews- but also a lot of great reviews as well. It seemed like people who expected the light to out perform its overall price were let down- and the people who purchased the light to do what it says it would do, were overall happy. All I needed the light to do is come on when I pulled the string, and modestly light up a 10'x14' shed in the evening- and it does this very well. Installation was a matter of minutes- and very self explanitory. Def. would recommend this for someone looking to see there way around a dark shed to put tools away and clean up after a long day in the yard.

Worth getting a second or third one, August 29, 2011
By Craig John Morton (Miami)
|
|
I bought a Panel Shed Light, based on positive reviews from other Amazon reviewers, for our garden cottage porch. Installation was a breeze. We have had it up for almost a month and had no problems with the light or solar panel. The set up is really easy, you just need a screw driver and to also have a good idea of where to place the little solar panel to get maximum sunlight.
Understandably we are heading into winter (-25C - -5C temps) so I am curious to see how it holds out in comparision to the never say die low budget garden solar lamps we have all over our garden.
There are 10 LEDs, so if you want a brighter light, which lasts for about 2 hours, then use the little switch to select the 10. The other selection is for 5 LEDs which gives you a slightly dimmer light for about 4 hours of useage. We don't usually keep this light on for that long...2 hours tops. Just be aware that, in our case, the light comes on very bright and after a while it dims down and then mantains that dim setting, however, it is relatively bright to get by and do what ever is needed on the porch...except for reading :-)
This solar lamp is very useful and handy and depending on how this one performs during winter, I will probably get another. As for overcast days...we haven't experienced any performance issues.

By Daniel T. Casner (Silicon Valley, CA, USA)

This lamp is exactly right for lighting up the area around my garbage cans as I load them and take them out the night before pickup. It is not super bright but does have a good wide field of illumination. The only disappointing part is that the solar panel is actually only 1/3rd as big as it appears. The rest of the area is just black plastic not PV.

I bought these with a open mind for the brightness of the lights but not the quality. There is not much quality put into these products! One out of three was completely broke right out of the box. The other ones switch from 5 lights to 10 lights is broke and the last one is woking well. So I believe that is what I would call a crap shoot! Good luck!

typical for import stuff, October 16, 2011
By inthedark
|
|
The product picture shown here isn't really representative of the solar cell. It actually covers only about 1/3 of the available space on the panel. There was a metal L shaped rod in the box and a wing nut that got no mention in the instructions. I figured out how to use the rod to hold the panel (if desired) but the engineering was lacking to attach the rod to the base. Once installed and charged for a day I found the light to be sufficiently bright for my needs and am fairly happy with it. Expect to drill a 1/2" hole to get the plug from the panel to the light in a shed and, of course, typical import quality.
