Solid Pump at a Great Price, September 2, 2008
By Steve Macdonald (Phoenix, AZ)
|
|
Based on the price I paid I expected a product of basic quality. However, I am surprised by the quality of the design and it seems to be solidly built. The adjustable arrow on the air pressure indicator is a nice feature as it keeps me from forgetting what my max pressure is and blowing up the tube.
I'm no expert on bike pumps (first one I've owned) but it does the job and is well constructed - so I would strongly reccomend it to anyone.

Affordable and reliable, March 26, 2009

This bike pump is great for the price. The gauge is clearly visible and the ease of pumping makes it a great value. I would definitely recommend this pump for road bike users or any other for that matter (going up to 100-110 psi was easy). All around, an excellent product.

inexpensive pump that does the job, November 10, 2008
By Amazon fan (Texas)
|
|
This floor pump works as it should. The nozzle seals onto the tire valve with a flick of a lever. You can pre-set the desired air pressure on the pressure dial/gauge so you can easily monitor the progress of inflating. The ergonomically-designed love handles prevent stress on the wrists. Within minutes my tires are properly inflated and I'm ready to roll. Will accomodate Presta and schrader tire valves (but there's no attachment for inflating a basketball). I can't predict this pump will last for a decade, but I'm very pleased that it accomplishes a simple task very well.

Works well, very lightweight., March 7, 2009
By TerryK (Mobile, AL)

When I first took this out of the box I was a little concerned at just how light the unit was. But after having now used it several times I have to admit it does the its job just fine and seems to actually be pretty sturdy. I have bikes with both Schrader and Presta valves and the nozzle clamps on to both very nicely and more importantly disengages quickly when your done inflating your tire. The gauge seems to be accurate enough and the little adjustable indicator is a nice feature. All in all I would recommend this pump.

Decent pump w/ drawbacks, July 18, 2010
By Isaac (San Francisco)
|
|
I got this pump in november and have been using it to pump up a road bike w/ presta valves. The pump doesn't get good marks for looks - it's a cheap plasticy device. But generally it works well. There's a nice gauge for PSI and the barrel is long enough. The handle is not padded, so I suggest wearing bike gloves when pumping of your hands will get bruised.
By far the biggest issue I've had is with the valve mechanism. And this applies to ALL of planet bike's pumps because they all use the same valve part.
1) the rubber seal can get shredded and not work well - my valve now flies off the tire at >80psi, so I'm buying a new valve. It should not have worn out so quickly, but at least you can get a replacement for cheap (at planet bike's website or on amazon).
2) The lever to activate the seal is *very* stiff. It requires a good deal of force to flip it up to seal the valve. But far worse is flipping down, after a little tug, the lever slams down. You have to have your hand there to flip it, and if your fingers are in the way, you will get really bad bruises, and that's just bad design. Think of the finger injury on par with slapping someone except at the last minute their face is replaced with a steal plate. Pretty bad.

Will not hold up to constant use, June 24, 2009
By Chuck Bass
|
|
This is the easily the worst pump I have ever owned. Apparently "Comp" = cheap tupperware like plastic. It also has no way to fasten the tubing to the pump, just some easy to lose paperclip attachment that holds the tubing on both ends. Anything over 100psi and the plastic barrel noticeably flexes. This is definitely not for inflating serious track or road tires. Spend the $5 extra and get the STX w/ a steel barrel.

DO NOT BUY, October 21, 2009
By brinkman
|
|
I bought this pump and unfortunately my first time attempting to use it was after driving a long distance and just about to ride, I find it won't even stay on a presta valve past 50 lbs of pressure, and during the 15 min of trying over and over it only deflated my tire, leaving me with an unridable bike. This is not competition quality whatsoever. It is cheap feeling plastic, when you push down on the handle with a lot of pressure it feels as if the thing will bend. It won't stay locked onto a valve no matter how much I try. Save yourself the frustration and buy something that will actually pump your tires with air.

Not sure this pump will stand a lot of use- it feels pretty flimsy to me. Just getting to a standard pressure I felt the thing flexing and wobbling. Maybe it will be fine- but I was expecting something a little more solid. Should have paid more I guess.

WARNING for Presta valves! :(, May 27, 2010
By BrooklynNY (NY)
|
|
Bought this to replace an old Planet Bike pump so I'm used to the dual valve attachment of the hose. When I first tried it, it got stuck on my presta valve and as I was trying to loosen it to get it out, my inner tube sprang a leak at the base of the valve so I had to replace the tube. I didn't think I was putting too much force (I'm a small lady) and hoped it was just the inner tube, but for the life of me I couldn't get the hose to attach to the valve correctly to function and I gave up before I caused another flat. I used my schrader adapter on the presta valve instead, and the pump worked fine (got up to 110 psi and felt like I could do more without issue).
Not worth the hassle if you want a good PRESTA pump, but definitely good for schrader. I didn't want to go through the trouble of returning it since it's okay for the price, JUST DON'T GET IT FOR PRESTA and you'll be fine. I'll use the adapter for now and might even try it again one day without it (if I feel like putting a hole in my tube again). :o)
Good luck!!!
p.s. main picture is the wrong pump, it's actually the one in the magnified picture (with the love handles)

It's OK, March 21, 2010
By Laura Huston

|
Works well enough, but after using a Lezyne Steel Floor Drive I put away the Planetbike and bought a Lezyne.
Though the Planetbike has the ability to reach 100 psi very moderate effort, the main issue I have had with the Planet bike is the valve connector. Flipping up to lock the connector was really counter intuitive.
When I first started using it, although the connector was flipped into the unlocked position, it sadly heplped me rip the valves out of a couple innertubes.
I got used to it's niggles, and used it well enough in the end though.
I stuck with it until I could afford better.

I just bought a really nice road bike ( 3,000.00) and wanted a good pump. This one is difficult to use and doesn't work very well. I should have returned it but was out of town and missed my window. Wouldn't recommend this one at all. Purchase local...not worth the savings on this one

Weak, October 10, 2009
By Matthew (Boston, MA)

I got this pump for my new presta road bike tires. While It says it can go up to 160psi, the pump felt like it was going to snap in half towards 100psi, and I couldn't even get it to 110psi - what my tires were rated for. So It'd probably be fine for mountain bikes and crusers, but certainly not track bikes.

Solid and sturdy but light, May 27, 2009
By VG (Detroit, MI)
|
|
Appears to be solidly built. So far I have used on bikes, b-ball and soccer balls. Lot of output in single stroke. On bikes sometimes it is difficult to put on, the lever to latch-on is kind of hard, may be it will loosen up as it ages. One draw-back, my 10 year old who could easily use the older (now broken) foot-pump is unable to use this one as it needs jerking pressure to fill. Overall I am happy with this purchase.

Low-cost but extremely useful pump, May 16, 2011
By Colin J Crawford (Rocky River, OH)
|
|
This is a six-month post-purchase review. I bought this floor pump last summer as a low-cost pump to maintain a good riding pressure in my road bike. I use my bike for my commute whenever possible, and take other rides often, so I use this pump at least once a week. It has fit my needs perfectly.
The plastic body does mean that this pump is light, and probably wouldn't stand up to being run over by a car. After six months of regular use, though, it has seen no damage. I can see this pump lasting me for quite a while longer. The contoured handle makes it downright easy for me to get to 120psi on my bike, and I'm fairly average when it comes to upper-body strength. Also, the dual nozzle means I can use this on my road bike with Presta valves, and some other family members' bikes with Schrader valves, without having to switch out parts.
My favorite feature, by far, is the integrated pressure gauge. It's got color-coded ranges for various types of bikes, but the best part is that there is a little pointer that you can move to the psi that you want attain. Then it's a simple matter to pump until the gauge meter lines up with that pointer, both of which are very easy to see while you're pumping. So you don't have to worry about over- or under-inflating your tires due to bad estimation, and you don't have to disconnect the pump, take a pressure reading, and then pump some more. It's a simple feature, but a really useful one.
So, to sum up: if you want an easy-to-use, versatile floor pump at a very reasonable price, look no further.

Nice bike pump, November 6, 2009
By Lud (Brooklyn, New York)

|
I needed a bike pump that wasn't too expensive and this one right here sure fits the bill. Upon receiving, the quality seems to be very sturdy. I went out and started pumping air into my road bike. My tire has a max pressure rate of 125, I got up to 90 psi with hardly any effort. Any pressure after that you might use your muscles just a little. It also came with an attachment for pumping balls like basketball, football, etc.

Decent pump, September 2, 2009
By Chilly Styles
|
|
I got this pump because my existing one was difficult to pump in the higher PSIs. You do not have to exert too much force to inflate with this pump. I can even inflate my car tires with it.
One thing I don't like about this pump is that the hose end has both valve types stacked on top of each other. This means that you might need a bit of room to fit the bulky nozzle on a tire valve.
Some people said they had trouble attaching the nozzle to tires. I did as well until I figured out how to use it properly. When attaching the nozzle to a tire valve, make sure the nozzle lever is parallel to the hose. Once the nozzle is on the valve, flip the lever out to secure it.

This product was cheap, but effective, August 23, 2009

I got this product out of the box and pump up my tires. It was kind of light and fragile, I thought it wouldn't work as a pump. When I pump up my tires, it worked perfect. I bought a Planet bicycle pump before and it wasn't worth the price I paid for it, when I read the reviews I decided to take a chance. I am glad I did.

Would not release a presta valve, June 19, 2010
By Biker Dude (Newtown, PA USA)
|
|
This pump was unacceptable to me. I had read the review stating that the pump would not release a valve, but dismissed it as a crank since there were many positive reviews, and I have had good experience with Planet Bike in the past. Sure enough, I had the same experience - had to rip the stem off of the tube to get the pump off of my bike. Returned it immediately - have not seen the credit show up yet ...
The pump did feel a little flimsy, but it is conceivable that it would have performed quite well in all other ways. It was pretty easy to get the pressure up to 125 psi, and I liked the large gauge, situated off of the floor.

Works great now that I figured out how to use it, September 22, 2009
By AmazinBuyer (CA)

The schrader valve works well. I use it on my car and my mountain bike. I didn't think the presta valve worked well but it turned out that I was pressing it in deep enough. Once I learned to push it in deep (and it helps to buy a tube with a long stem) it works great. It works like a pump should, nothing too fancy. It is accurate and does the job well. It does bend and flex a bit so I wouldn't go too nuts with it.

This is a great bicycle pump. Made of light but high impact plastic, it works quite well and can inflate tires without herculean effort. can't go wrong with the Topeak Pressure-Rite Anti-Air Loss Connector, July 18, 2009
By dr.addn, Ph.T (Tucson, AZ USA)

. I spent considerable time getting leads on a better tire pump,
only to find it too had problems:
that good reputation was only for their older pumps,
that pump stopped working when it started catering to usa`style valves,
that pricey pump has plastic parts that fail like the rest:
and, what good is a warranty if the whole deal is inconvenient
or has bad service .
. well, along with being satisfied with this Planet Bike pump,
I'm sure I can't go wrong with the
Topeak Pressure-Rite Anti-Air Loss Connector $7.63
. the adapter is genius: it has it's own pressure sensitive valve inside;
give it a pump to engage it,
then your pump's gauge's reading will be true;
finally release your pump's engage
and the adapter quickly releases pressure on the tire's stem valve .
. now easily unscrew the adapter .
. the adapter screws on easily, and has a rock-solid connection .
. they advertise it as getting into tight places,
and providing exact pressures;
but, it's also doing well at an additional use case:
since it's the pump's pressure that sets the adapter's stem depressor,
the pump's stem depressor never gets worn out .
. also, since the adapter's stem depressor is metal,
it never gets worn out either !
. this pump is fine for my 75psi 20" trike tires .

nice with one exception, December 6, 2011
By P. James (Iowa)
|
|
This is stable on the ground, durable, good hose, and sturdy plunger. There is a small ring with a pointer that you can turn to where your pressure needs to be, to make it a little easier.
this pump is the dog's bullocks with one exception:
I was excited at first to have a dual valve end - something that worked on schrader (big) and presta (little) valves. I have since broken off two presta valves because the stem of the presta valve just sticks up too far to reliably undo the lever that locks the filling end onto the valve. My advice is stick with the little one dollar adapters and save your poor presta valves.
I don't view that as too negative, just a weakness of presta valves with this kind of pump in general.

Meh, March 28, 2011
By R. Frace (Austin, TX United States)
|
|
I bought this pump based on the good reviews here on amazon. In addition I liked the price and that the gauge is not positioned on the floor so it's easier to read.
I was initially disappointed because the pump is very lightweight and the base is a bit small, making it fairly unstable while pumping. I also found the head to be somewhat cheap and it's a bit finicky connecting to presta valves, which is what I mostly use it for. The head works much better with schraeder valves. It also took a long time to get used to the "love handle." Though after a while I did find that the angled grip and the ability to get some palms into the action was nice and easier on the hands.
One this I would consider a design flaw is that metal clip on the hose for storage -- after a year or so of use, the hose sprung a leak right where the clip hooks on. Fortunately I was able to order a replacement hose for ~$10 from my local bike shop (which didn't come with the clip).
Honestly, I would not buy this pump again. I might consider a different Planet Bike model if I could demo it in the store first but will most likely go with another brand.

Works great!, December 27, 2010

This pump is sturdy and well-built, and the built-in pressure gauge is useful. It's great for pumping my bike. I also use it for pumping my car's tires, but this is pretty exhausting and takes a while since the car's tires take a lot more air than my bike's (and there are twice as many tires).

Push the level up, November 4, 2010
By Jen
|
|
I like that it has a gauge so I can tell how much pressure I have in my tire and it gives you a range of what your tire should be at depending on the type of bike you have. But I didn't understand how to use the pump at first. I kept on putting the pump onto the tire valve, sealing the air by pushing down on the level then when I started to add in air, the pump would fly off the valve. It wasn't until later that I realized that to seal the air, you must push the level up. There were no instructions so I didn't know and this pump works opposite of my old one.

Well-designed, all around. Works well on both types of valves, September 7, 2010
By Gatsby (Beltway traffic)
|
|
This is a great pump that has worked well on both road bike tires (presta valves) and mountain bike tires (schrader valves). I've used it for over a year now. It is well-designed, all around. The handle ("love handle") is ergonomically shaped and comfortable to grasp while pumping. The feet at the base can serve as pedals for you to step on while pumping hard and trying to prevent it from moving. The air pressure gauge has a little movable red display needle so you can set it and determine when you have pumped enough air in. The nozzle has two separate holes (one for presta valves and one for schrader valves) so you don't have to fumble with attachment adapter pieces or worry about losing them.
Best of all, it works. I have no problems pumping my mountain bike up to the recommended ~50 psi and my road bikes up to the recommended ~120 psi. (You do have to push harder as the psi gets higher, but that's expected.) And I don't experience much air loss during the pumping as I have with other pump models.
Before I bought this model, I originally bought a Schwinn pump from Walmart (found here: http://www.amazon.com/Schwinn-Steel-Floor-Pump-Gauge/dp/B0018CX1EG/), and the Schwinn one did not work well at all for me, so I returned it and then researched online for something better. I eventually bought this model based on the numerous positive Amazon reviews (of which I've come back to add to) and on the low price. I had never even heard of the Planet Bike brand before so I was a little skeptical. But after a year of using this pump successfully on all 4 of my bikes, I'm sold. I even bought a Planet Bike brand bike computer recently, which I'm also happy with. It is a quality brand.

Well made and fast inflation with the Planet Bike pump!, August 19, 2010
By Richard B Massa

The dual valve-head (shrader & presta) makes this pump a breeze to use for any bike, tractor, etc. I use this pump before every bike ride so I can adjust tire pressure accordingly and have had no problems. I truly believe this pump is equivalent to those that are priced around $50. Long hose, accurate gauge ... great buy!

Mixed opinion - but OK for price, August 3, 2010
By RR (IA)

I've owned this pump for over a year.
First impression was great - very light, nice construction, and comfortable to use.
It is able to connect with presta valves on my recumbent where as my old 'JoeBlow' had a very hard time getting going especially with shorter stems. I have trouble using it at all on schrader valves - go figure. So now I use it for the presta values and the 'JB' for the other bikes.
The big issues I now have with it is getting it off when the correct pressure is reached (~100 psi) - really takes a lot of twisting and pulling and many times I whack myself or something when it does release. I also worry about bending the stem.
This pump requires many more strokes than the JB that I was used to, and the higher pressure requires much more effort, a lot more - almost like a short hand pump.
For the money, it't nice construction and light weight is a positive, but it is mediocre for it's intended use.
I'm ordering another pump shortly (Serfas TCPG Bicycle Floor Pump) - I hope that it attaches / detaches easily on the presta valves and is OK with the schrader. I suspect it is in the same category as to number of strokes and effort as this one looking at the Serfas barrel.

Good pump, good price, July 20, 2010
By Larry Andershock (Torrance, CA USA)

So far so good. Very pleased with the pump. Have not experienced any of the problems noted in other reviews. Will know about presta valves later when I dig my bike out of storage & will update if necessary. This is a good middle tier pump that will definately please those used to lower end, cheap pumps. My guess is those used to spending much more for higher tier pumps may be dissappointed as it has a different look and feel but its proven itself to be mechanically sound so far so I would recommend it!

Good Pump at a Good Price, July 15, 2010
By Don Roti (Martinsville, IN)
|

I've been very happy with this pump. The head has a separate opening for presta and schrader valves which seems to work easier and better than the combination type. The only improvement I can suggest is a little longer rigid collar where the hose attaches to the head so leverage could better be applied when clamping or releasing from the valve. The gauge is large and easy to read. Very light weight but seems to be holding up well.

Simple to use, don't see why other people are having problems, June 27, 2010
By C. Miller (Indianapolis)

Reading some of the reviews of this item, I was semi-hesitant to order it. However, the price was right and I decided to give it a shot. This is one of the simplest bike pumps I have used and I don't see why people have problems with it. You put the valve stem on the appropriate hole on the pump, lock it, pump your tire, unlock and lift straight off. Granted, it's not as fast as filling it at a gas station, but that is in no way a con as it just makes one less stop for you to make.
I highly recommend this pump to anybody who is looking for an inexpensive, well built and easy to use bike pump.

Classy love handles more than a clever name, May 14, 2010
By Ben Swofford (Oxford, OH USA)

Good price, it works great. The handles feel really nice too.
It comes with a weird attachment for blowing up beach-balls or other normally lung-inflated objects. Kind of interesting. Hope I don't lose it for when I'd appreciate having it.
This one's a safe buy, bottom line.

Cheap seal, April 28, 2010
By R. Davis

The plastic lining inside the nozzle (forms the seal) got a kinky in it after only a few uses. This made the seal (and the pump) unusable. Cheap plastic and kind of flimsy too.

Looks nice, feels kind of cheap, January 6, 2010
By fightnut

When I first opened the package and took the pump out, I immediately noticed how light it felt.
I used it right away and my first thought was that maybe it's too light. It feels kind of cheap.
It worked great for my mountain bike (about 40psi) and I think it would last a lifetime if only using it for mountain bikes.
But when I used it for my road bike, which only requires 105psi, I really had to push at the bottom of the stroke once it got up around 90psi..
I know some tires have an even higher psi requirement, so I really question how long this would last for those types of psi's.
I plan to get another floor pump to keep in my vehicle, and I think I will try a metal one, since I do have a road bike too.
But for mountain bikes only, I think this is a good pump. I like the love handle design, I like the adjustable pointer on the gauge, I like that the gauge is raised off the ground so it's easier to see.

Servicable pump, November 23, 2009
By A. Eifler

The plastic barrel is a little wobbly at high pressure, but the pumps works well. I wish the feet were a little bigger, but they don't bother me too much. Gauge is easy to read. I like my Bontrager Charger pump better (discontinued I think), for a similar price.

Quality, But lots of plastic, October 21, 2009
By MickeyRat (Bay Area, CA)

Like some other reviewers, I couldn't get the Presta Valve option to work. The Scraeder Valve function works great though. I use the pump on my Mountain Bike (Schraeder Valves) so I don't need to go over 60 lbs. So for lower pressures it works fine. To use it, You press down and hear a little hiss of air escaping, then it seats nicely on the Valve. You flip up the Lever and pump away. The gauge is very accurate and seems solidly built. The rest of the pump is plastic. Plastic handle, A plastic rod attaches to the handle. The main tube and base is also plastic. It's not a bad thing though as it works fine and feels very sturdy! A great pump for the price.

Excellent Product, September 1, 2009
By Matt (Golden, CO)

The bike pump is very convenient and easy to use. The pressure gage is very accurate, and I was able to fill my tires very quickly. The multiple valve type capability was also very helpful for switching to my room mates tires as well. I was able to easily get the pressure up to 100 psi for my road bike, and did not see any issue with structural integrity though it is not metal.

Good, affordable pump., July 31, 2009
By E. Salas (San Francisco, CA)

I saved easily $20 on this pump versus the ones in bike stores. The pump works great on my 80psi tires, but any higher and I fear the stem will begin to flex. The installed pressure gauage is an added bonus and its manual dial is great for remembering your tires' max pressure. 4/5 stars due to the difficulty I experience when attempting to lock the nozzle onto my Presta valves--this usually takes me 2 or 3 attempts for a leak-proof seal.

Worked great on my 100 psi bicycle tires, December 24, 2011
By BookKnight (Los Angeles, CA USA)
|
|
I had two bicycle tires that had less than 10 pounds of pressure. I have a small portable pump that I spent about 15 minutes per tire getting the pressure up to 50 pounds before I gave up. I received this floor pump yesterday and used it today and it took less than five minutes to pump up both tires to 100 pounds PSI. The only thing that threw me was the lever on the pump head. I'd assumed that the stem would be inserted with the lever pulled up and then the lever would be pulled down to lock it in place. It took me about five minutes to figure out it's the other way around. This may be intuitive to some but I don't recall seeing any instructions indicating which way the lever was supposed to be positioned.
Overall the pump seems to be fairly well made. It would be nice if the gauge was closer to the top but it's better than being all the way at the bottom. The handles are comfortable and the base is wide enough to put your feet on to hold the pump in place.
It says that it's rated at 200 psi but I was struggling a bit getting it to 100 psi and I'm 6 foot and about 250 pounds so I can put quite a bit of weight behind it.
I think this is a good pump for the price. However, I've only needed to use it once so we'll see how it wears over the next couple of years.

Great - no complaints, September 25, 2011

This bike pump has treated us well for our hybrid bikes. The mechanism for attaching to the valve works smoothly, and pressure gauge is great to have, and it doesn't take too much force to pump up tires.

Not a good product at all. Ended up returning the pump after stripping two tires. (one by me and one by the bike shop pro in trying to show me how to use it without ruining my tire). I would not recommend it to anyone.
