About Planet Bike
In November 1996, Planet Bike was founded in Madison, WI. In many ways, Planet Bike began as a social experiment that dedicated itself to doing business in a different way. Instead of being just another company that develops and sells products with profit as its end goal, Planet Bike wanted to help bring about positive change for people, their communities, and the environment.

Despite being a simple machine, the people at Planet Bike have always believed that the bicycle has great potential to help improve the world and the lives of the people in it. From the start, they have embraced an alternative corporate purpose which seeks to help get more people on bicycles by making communities friendlier places for the self-propelled. By donating 25% of company profits to causes that promote and facilitate bicycle usage, Planet Bike hopes to make an impact.

Social experiments aside, Planet Bike was born from the heart of a cyclist with a goal of making innovative, high-quality, and practical bicycle accessories. Simply put, the company strives to design and develop the best bicycle products in the world. In the company's short 10-year history, it has made important product innovations within the bicycle industry. Advancements include the four-line computer which is now a standard in the industry and the world's first self-contained HID light. Not bad for a company that 10 years ago started as a one-man operation. Today, while still a small company, Planet Bike continues to evolve and improve its product line with the goal of always striving to build accessories that make it easier for people to ride their bikes. Since 1996, Planet Bike's financial support of the grassroots bicycle movement has totaled $500,000. By 2010, they have made a goal to donate $1 million to organizations that are dedicated to making America a friendlier place for cyclists.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great pump, May 20, 2008
By Carbon Fibre
Straight out of the box this pump's burnished aluminum construction was a good indication that I'd made the right choice. After figuring out how to attach it to my bike's Presta valves (open the valve, give it a gentle tap to bleed some air, press on the pump connector and then pull the lever up to lock in position) it took less than ten strokes to get 120psi. Very smooth, easy to read pressure gauge and the handle really is easy on your hands. Having my tires consistently pumped to their rated pressures has dramatically improved my daily rides - my tires are rock hard, but man are they fast! Big kudos to Planet Bike on this pump!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  An excellent ergonomic bike pump at a great price., October 26, 2008
By Technophile (New York)
I got tired of trying to inflate the bike tires on my family's four bikes with my hand held portable pump and bought the Planet Bike 1002-3 ALX based on price and ratings. I wasn't disappointed.
The hots:
1) "Love Handle" - two hand grips at just shy of a 90 degree angle comfortably fit the angle your hands are at when held in front of you pushing. The handle is padded plastic that feels fine.

2) The fitting that latches onto the tire is plastic, but of beefy construction with a metal latch. I find it gets great seal on all my bike tires no problem.

3) The gauge is a real treat for me. It's got the various tire types color coded. It was an education for me: I realized I had been chronically under inflating my bike tires for years. Inflating them to the right pressure was easy, quick, and precise. It felt great biking on the correctly inflated tires.

4) Aluminum tube looks great and inspires confidence.

Nots? Maybe all the plastic parts (handle, base, fittings) means it will not last as long. At the rate I use a bike pump and how beefy all these parts feel to me I think this will last a long long time.

All in all - the bottom line is that I was able to inflate my tires with very little effort, and in very little time, with great precision. This thing made inflating all those bike tires, if not an absolute pleasure, at least much less of a chore.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Top notch bike pump, June 17, 2008
By Jerry Meza (Rancho Cordova, Ca United States)
I have compared this pump to others on the market and this is a very good product. I has all the features you see on other big brand names and comes at a much lower price. I highly recommend this bicycle pump.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Versatile Bike Pump ... Great Price, October 12, 2009
By WryGuy2 (Arlington, VA)
This summer my old Trek bike floor pump finally gave up the ghost, so I needed a new floor pump. After researching pumps for a few evenings, I decided to go with this pump ... the Planet Bike 1002-3 ALX Floor Pump with Love Handle. What particularly caught my attention about this pump is that it has an automatic dual presta and schrader valve head. I have one bike with presta valves and one with schrader valves, and it was a pain to have to disassemble the head every time I wanted to inflate the other bike. The dual valve head works ... I place the proper valve hole in the head onto whichever bike tire I need to inflate, flick down the locking stem, and start pumping. It really works ... no muss and no fuss.

I've been using this pump for a couple of months now, so here are my "pros and cons":

Pump Pros:
- Solidly constructed and fairly attractive to boot
- Automatic dual valve head that works perfectly
- Inflates my tires quickly ... much more quickly than my old Trek
- Built-in, large air pressure gauge is mounted high up on the pump, so its very easy to read
- The "Love Handle" - the pumping handle is angled to fit your hands' natural position so its more comfortable to use the pump

Pump Cons:
- I couldn't really find any

Bottom line - I really like this pump. It feels solid, works well, and because of the versatility of the automatic dual valve head, I'm much more likely to keep my tires properly inflated because its a snap to do it. I highly recommend this bike pump.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Bad nozzle: will tear the tubes!, February 4, 2010
By Stefano J. Attardi (Cambridge, MA)
This pump has a bad nozzle: it is really tough to take out from the valve. By trying to yank it out, I tore so many tubes next to the valve.

It took my a while to figure out why I was getting flats every other day. I wasted lots of money and time walking my bike to the shop to get the tubes replaced before I realized they were caused by a bad pump.

To sum up: this pump will cause you worlds of pain until you throw it away. Avoid.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good pump for the money, October 15, 2008

Bought it for $35 (with shipping). Works well and looks good. Designed to be light which makes it good for carrying and transporting, but does make it a little unstable when standing on it's own.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Bicycle tire pump, August 13, 2010
By Ricky (Ohio)
I purchased this pump to fill tires with a Presta valve (the thin one). It does not work good at all. The air leaks out around the valve when you clamp it on. You have to pump very fast and take it off quickly or you will end up with less air pressure than when you started. I may have to go back to using an adapter for a Schrader valve.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Works great - even the Presto valves!, January 10, 2010
By Tom (Ohio)
I have to say - it took me about 10 mins to figure out how to get this to work on my presto valves - and here's the answer. Just plug this into the presto socket, raise the lever (counter-intuitive) and then pump like you mean it. After one pump or so it "detects" that you are using the presto socket and then transferes the air to fill your tires. A little bit of a learning curve but now it's great.

It is make with really sturdy materials - great price AND high quality!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  125 psi with no sweat, December 9, 2009
By Richard Kagan
After repeated disappointments, this pump does the job with no sweat for road bikes with high inflation tires - 115-125 psi and up. High quality construction, secure seating with tube valves, long hose, fits both Presta and Schrader valves, easy-to-read pressure guage, and easy to pump up with "love handle." Great value compared with the competition. Do yourself a favor and get this pump, especially if you have a road bike with pesky high inflation tires.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great pump. Solid buy., May 28, 2009
By W. Bison (Boston, MA)
Looked at a few pumps to smaller hand pump which was just too frustrating to use regularly. Saw this one, read the other reviews, adn thought I'd take a chance that others were right.

In the end, I think I agree fully that this is a well made, durable, affordable pump. I'm very pleased I bought it, and fully recommend it to others. The pressure gauge is easy to read, and shows both in PSI and in Bars. The pump only takes a few (easy) pumps to go from 30 to 60 psi. And, the most important feature to me -- it's easy to lock the head onto the valve (and has entry types built in for both common types of valves).

Glad I bought it. Think I got a fair price. I recommend it to you if you're looking for a decent bike pump.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent pump, November 29, 2008
By C. Schenker (PA)
This pump is capable of easily delivering over 100psi. It's ideal for owners of both Presta and Schrader valve tires because it can inflate both without any reconfiguration. The attached gauge is easy to read and very convenient. I'm very happy with it.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Planet Bike ALX Floor Pump, November 28, 2010
By rob316
I have a large air compressor for big jobs, but wanted something my daughter and wife could use to quickly top off bike tires or small house hold inflatables. Item arrived quickly and worked well the first time it was used, however the two position valve locked in the closed position the second time it was used, making it useless for filling bike tires, its main use. Went to a bike shop and found a replacement valve head without the two position levered head which has worked fine. The pressure gauge is reasonably accurate and the pump handle is comfortable even for my 8 year old to use. Hopefully it will be trouble free with the new valve head.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  bad bad bad, September 16, 2010
By theater girl
Just as another reviewer said, this pump has a horrible nozzle. Difficult to put on, but horrible to get off. I have to wrench it side to side to get it to release from the valve stem. It doesn't 'pop' off like my previous pump. Have bent several valve stems and had to return it

5.0 out of 5 stars.  If you're looking for a floor pump, look no further!, August 11, 2010
By K. Hou (Philadelphia, PA)
I've had this floor pump for the past year now, and to be honest, I have no complaints. Zero. None at all. It works very well.

The pump has handles that are ergonomically fit to the angle of your natural grip so you can pump in a natural motion. It comes with a beefy, flexible rubber hose that has both shrader and presta adapters on the same side on one end, so it's really easy to use. If I want to pump up shrader valve tubes, I use the shrader hole. If I want to pump up presta valve tubes, I use the presta valve hole. No confusion whatsoever.

Using this pump, I can effortlessly hit 100 psi on my tires (continental gatorskins 28x700c). What I find works well for presta valves is rotating the tire until the presta valve is at the top, pushing the hose head into the valve (there's no need to lock it in place for me at least because it doesn't leak air if I don't lock it), and pumping. When I'm done, I position my thumbs on opposite sides of the tire onto the hose head and push down, applying even force on both sides until it pops off. This way, I can ensure that I don't risk tearing my inner tube.

For shrader valves, I find that I have to engage the lock, otherwise the tire will leak. When inflating a Brompton 16" tires, I position the tire so the valve is on the bottom. When I press the hose head onto the valve, it'll start leaking immediately, so I have to firmly push down and immediately engage the lock. Interestingly, after inflating I don't have to apply pressure to push the hose head off the valve. I just lightly hold the hose and disengage the lock with my thumb, and the hose head just pops off. Pretty easy. You can even use the pump to pump up riding lawn mower tires that use shrader valves.

It comes with a little tool pod on the hose containing needles for inflating soccer balls, etc. I haven't figured out how to attach it/found a need to use it yet, but it's nice to know that I can use it. The pump comes with a pressure gauge (0->160 psi) with a plastic piece in the shape of a circle with an arrow on the inside so you can rotate it to remember what pressure you pump your tire to.

It's fairly light, and the aluminum barrel feels very solid in my hands. I don't think this pump is going to break any time soon. The best part is that 25% of Planet Bike's profits go towards bicycle advocacy!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Watch your fingers, May 18, 2010
By Ronald Dufel (Bonita, CA United States)
The pump is well made and does a good job except for 2 gripes I have. I bought this to use on my road bike. It requires 100 to 120 PSI and my hand pump will not cut it. First the lever you need to pull up to lock the head to the valve stem is very stiff and takes some muscle power to lift it without bending the valve stem. Also after pumping up the tire, removing the head is just as difficult. I have presta valves and I don't want to be bending them around any more than necessary. I hope this will wear in after some more usage.
Second issue is the air pressure is a little hard to figure out. When I attached the head to the valve stem, I was expecting to see what the actual pressure was in the tire. It does not read any pressure. As you pump, the gage goes up and you have to listen to hear when the air starts to enter the valve. While you are doing this the pressure reading goes up and down as you pump up and down. I tried using this to pump up my scooter tire, but the reading were all over the place and went back to my tire gage which is always accurate.
Well at least it does pump up the tires nice and hard in a short amount of time.

Its a simple pump, looks great out of the box, and fills up my road bike in no time. Once you get to 100+psi the pump is difficult to press down, which is expected. The gaege works great and I'm happy with the purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  bang for the buck, December 13, 2009
By Czar or Harmonics (Bumblef**k, Pennsylvania)
I'll make this simple. If you want to pay out the bum for a snazzy brand name road bike pump, go for it. If you want amazing functionality and solid construction that won't break the bank, buy this pump. The whole think feels solid, and no leaks or connection problems have arisen or are anticipated. The gauge is appealing and useful. The "love handle" top is a great idea and makes it very comfortable to pump, even if you really need to lay into it, and I think the whole system is quite good looking. Just get it.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great pump, easy to get to pressure, nice gauge, June 27, 2009
By Jeff Lindborg (Seattle, WA United States)
Far easier to get my tires to the level I want before going out on the road than eithe of the other two pumps I tried. I have to be careful not to fly past 110 psi actually instead of struggling to get there. The guauge is easy for me to read and has a nifty little dial you can set to where you want it so you can eyeball it easily while you pump.
Very nice pump.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great product at a good price, July 8, 2011
By drumsandsuch (east coast)
I purchased this product after getting back into road biking and attempting to use some old pumps that I hadn't used in years. After damaging the valves on my new bike twice (yes, my head is hard), I realized I was going to have to purchase a new pump. Like most of the equipment in cycling, I was fairly shocked at the prices, so I came to the trusted Amazon for a deal, and I found it. This pump has a dual-type valve attachment that allows you to use it on either Presta or Schrader valves (I have only used it for the Presta valves), and it also has a pack of gizmos to let you fill up air mattresses, footballs, or whatever. It has a readable gauge, which is a must for pumping up road bike tires (over 100 psi), and the pumping is pretty effortless, smooth and efficient (takes only a few strokes to get the pressure up to 100 psi). I have had one problem, and that was with a certain type of Presta valve that has a thread, rather than a smooth surface - I was never able to get the pump head to work with the threaded valves, though I tried unsuccessfully several times (each time with a torn valve to show for it). Save yourself some aggravation and use the smooth-sided valves. Unfortunately, I can't comment on howe the pump works on Schrader valves, or to pump up other things, but I suspect it will work OK - I bought it for the specific purpose of using it on Presta valves on high pressure tires and it works great.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Okay, but you could do a lot better..., June 6, 2011
By keyser_soze_mpls (Minneapolis)
I bought this Planet Bike pump after reading the rave reviews on Amazon. I found it difficult to get the pump working with a Presta valve. I usually had to let some air out of my tire before the pump would "take". The base isn't very sturdy, which makes the pump a bit tippy. I did not like the love handle at all. It feels like you are giving your bike CPR. A standard T handle feels a lot more natural to me. I was at the bike shop one day and I noticed that the mechanics were using a Specialized Air Tool Pro, so I bought one for myself. Note, I am NOT a paid shill for Specialized. It was spendy, but now I have a pump that just plain works. I think Specialized makes a cheaper version, but I recommend going the full monty and buying the Air Tool Pro.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Very Good Bicycle Tire Pump, June 4, 2011
By Al Chartreux (United States)
I've owned this pump for over two years, and it's still working fine. It can attach to either Schrader or Presta valves. The things I like about it are the pressure gauge, which helps one accurately achieve the rated pressure of a given tire, and the wide pump handle design, which makes it fairly easy to fill up a tire, with two feet placed on the floor pedals to keep the pump in place. That's it; the pump is reasonably priced and works well.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice Pump - Fast - Locking Mechanism a little tough, April 18, 2011
By Michael J. Ferraro (Nazareth, PA)
The pump works well. I'd recommend it. I've only used it a few times so I can't vouch for reliability. It's a fast pump and gets my 700x23 tires up to 120# - 140# no problem. I've only used it for Presta valve stems.

My wife struggled a bit with the locking mechanism. Other pumps we've had (Blackburn Air Tower) lock more easily. Other than that, this seems like it will be a great pump.

I haven't doublechecked the gauge pressure so I can't vouch for its accuracy.

Happy riding!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Planet bike 1002-3 ALX, January 15, 2011
By MrFubar
We have two bikes with both Schrader and Presta valves and I was looking for a pump that accomodated both without having to use attachmeents. This pump not only does that, but attaches to the valves quickly and securely. The pump itself is constructed extremely well. Although a little heavier than I though the materials are all top quality. Easy to use and the lifetime warranty makes it a no brainer. It was less expensive than many other pumps offering less features and quality.

The love handles make it easy to stand on and the stem is easy to pump. I went from a totally flat tire to 100 psi in about 20 easy pumps. The gauge is easy to read and has a red marker on the dial you can set for your optimum pressure. The only thing I would improve is moving the gauge up another 4" to 5" making it easier to read, but that's not a big deal. I'm not sure how accurate the pressure indicator is since I don't have a separate gauge to test it, but from other reviews I read, the consensus is the pressure is right on.

This was a great purchase at a great price that I am sure will give me many years of service. Also the second pleasurable purchase I have made from Amazon. Great place to buy stuff.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent pump. Poor quality handle, September 8, 2010
By kinezos
Purchased this pump for my Mountain and Road bikes after a lot of resarch and reading of other reviews. Essentially, this is a great pump which enables high pressures to be obtained very quickly. My only gripe is that the "love jandle" feels poorly constructed - it flexes slightly and is made of quite poor quality plastic, hence minus 1 star. Only time will tell whether this product lasts.

But so long as it's working, another excellent Planet Bike Product

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Awesome Mix of Value and Functionality, September 2, 2010
By spg (Boston)
I did a bunch of research before purchasing my first floor pump, and the Planet Bike 1002-3 ALX is the one that I chose to buy, and I'm definitely psyched that I did.

Right off the bat you can tell that this is a quality product - it's sturdy, well-designed, and easy to use. I was personally very surprised at how much air is moved with each pump - it only took a few pumps to bring my bike tires up to around 80 psi. The gauge on this pump is also very useful - it's color-coded by bike type and makes it very easy to fill your tires with the correct amount of air. Now that I keep my tires inflated properly, it's amazing how much of a difference it makes with my daily bike rides.

Using the pump has really been a pleasure. It's great bang for the buck, and I would recommend it to anyone!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  More than I wanted to spend but it works well, August 31, 2010
By Ragman (New York)
I bought this pump when my decade old Joe Blow died suddenly, so I paid up a little. It inflates tires to high PSI, e.g., 120, with fewer strokes than my old pump. It does take a bit of "feel" to get it clamped properly on presta valves. No problem with schraeder valves. And it releases more easily than my old Joe Blow, though I do have to jiggle it a bit. This pump is lighter than my old pump, which makes it feel less solid, but I think that's a perception, not a substantive issue.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice bike pump...but expensive, August 29, 2010
By JEL (Princeton, NJ United States)
I had a bike pump that worked for years. It was difficult attach the pump to the tire, but it worked well enough. When it broke, I decided to spend the extra money for a good pump. This pump is expensive, but it's works well. It takes a little effort to connect the pump to the tire, but when you start pumping, the tire fills quickly . Just as important, when you disconnect it from the tire, you don't lose half the air in the tire. Simply put, if you are willing to spend the money, this one is worth it.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Planet Bike Pump, August 28, 2010
By DR and LR (Rhode Island)
I've had a couple of mountain bikes in the past, both of which had the easy to use, larger, Schrader, valves. I then picked up a Hybrid (Trek 7300) about 10 years ago. It had Presta valves which frustrated me so much I drilled out the rims (3/32 if I remember) and installed new tubes with Schrader valves and life was easy again. A couple of weeks ago I purchased my first road bike and of course it has Presta valves - and the rims are way to small to drill out.

At first I used an adaptor and my old pump to fill the tires; clumsy, awkward, too many steps, not an exact fill. So, after reading the review, I picked up the Planet bike pump. The head "seems" to seat fairly well on the valve but when I pump, air starts leaking out at about 80psi. It's a race to pump fast enough to get the pressure to 110-120. And then another race to get the pump head off fast enough before all the air leaks out. I'm frustrated.

I sent an email off to Planet Bike earlier today detailing how I was using the pump and asking if I was doing anything wrong. It will be interesting to read their response.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Solid Bike Pump, August 19, 2010
By BC
This is a great bike pump, it has a sturdy design, great handle, large sturdy legs and has the presta and shraeder valve attachments all on one pump head. My only issue is the latch that seals the pump head to the tube - its locks in what would intuitively be the open position (the switch is reversed).

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Disappointed, August 18, 2010
By B. Kroll (New York, USA)
Perhaps I had a one-off defective pump, but I gave my loyal Specialized floor pump as a gift to a friend just getting into cycling and replaced it with this one, paying up more for what (from the reviews) seemed like a great pump. I have owned several Specialized floor pumps, and they all worked well. With this Planet Bike pump it took 4-5 tries each time to get a secure lock on my Presta valve stem, often losing all of the air in the tire in the process. (Yes, I was using the correct valve opening). Never had this issue before with any pump, and I have used many. Returned as defective (thanks Amazon!) for a refund. Will go back to Specialized.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Not happy with this pump...returned after 10 days!, August 9, 2010
By SIYUN (Pennsylvania, USA)
I was so disappointed with this pump, especially after doing research and reading the many glowing reviews of this product. A brief list of pros and cons is as follows:

Pros-except for inconsistent gauge appears to be not too much effort to pump air in at high pressures (115 psi)...that's it for pros.
Cons-not well made (base is plastic and doesn't stand solidly on its own, expensive for what you get (I've seen others out there for less money that are more solidly built), closure on valve is awkward to close once attached to wheel, gauge does not work and looks cheaply made, bike pump has an overall plastic feel to it...

I'm surprised I had the pump for 10 days (used it every other day to pump up tires) because my initial impression was, "I paid $50 for this tinny looking thing." The process of pumping up the tire consisted of attaching the pump opening to the tire (and hoping not to let more air out of tire due to stiff and awkward closure mechanism), pumping a few times, watching the gauge needle go haywire, taking it off, checking with my own pressure gauge (that is accurate), and repeat. When one orders a pump with a gauge one expects the gauge to work...if not the pump goes back. I'll look for another brand and purchase from a local bike store so I can see and feel what I'm purchasing.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  The attached pressure gauge makes all the difference., July 25, 2010
By P. Geis
The first pump I have owned that includes a pressure gauge, so I can't compare it to others (hence the four star instead of five), but I can say that having the gauge right there makes a huge difference. If you are in the habit of using a pressure gauge every time you fill your tires, this will be merely convenient. I was not, and this makes a huge difference in how much air I pump into my bike tires.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  No regrets here, September 25, 2009
By Zoom (Cincinnati, OH)
Does everything as expected. Nice long air hose with stays on the pump to attach the hose as well. Only have used on Presta valves, but I would assume both work equally well.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Easy pump to use, June 8, 2009
By Roopesh Sheth (San Diego, CA USA)
I am lucky - this is the first pump I bought and I love it. It's fast, comfortable, and accurate.

The only downside is that the hose is shorter than I would like. Everytime I put the pump down I have to slide it closer to the bike to get a good seal.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent pump, March 19, 2009
By Nathan A. Price (San Antonio, TX)
Well-designed, comfortable handles, large heavy-duty aluminum chamber. The dual tip works easily with both Schraeder and Presta valves. The pressure gauge is accurate. Overall it's a great pump that's well worth the money. I saw similar pumps at the bike shop for $60+. At half the price you can't beat it.

The pump came quickly and works great for the price. I haven't used it enough to comment on its long-term reliability yet, but so far I am very satisfied.
