5.0 out of 5 stars.  Easy to Use (but not to break, hopefully!), August 1, 2008
By Margaret Campbell (Washington DC)
Fits all my needs - stays looped, glides open easily when the right combo is entered, and not when it isn't. Stretches enough to get it around the front tire, frame, and even a thick pole. The portion that screws on to the frame baffles me - it doesn't lock, and having the cable attached to it just leaves you with this awkward loop of cable sticking off of your bike. I just use it like a regular cable lock. I don't live in a particularly high-theft area (I'm in VA, just south of DC) and I feel pretty comfortable leaving my bike with this while I visit friends, go to the library, do some shopping, whatever.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great tool for the job!, July 23, 2008
By Graham Paterson (CA, USA)
I really like the security cable. It is plenty long enough and was easy to set the combination to something I like. This is really a retardant to anyone who would otherwise want to walk off with my bike. After all a wise man once told me "Locks are for honest people. Locks just keep them honest." If a person is determined to steal a bike he will use whatever means to do so (including bolt cutters etc.) So for the purpose I purchased this cable lock it works admirably.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Good cable, just not in New York City, May 14, 2009
By Gadget Lover (NY City, USA)
When I bought it, I didn't realize how easy it will be to have it clipped. I spent good enough money on my bycicle to have it stolen in New York City because a not so strong cable. I ended up getting the Kryptonite chain and U-Lock. Sure I paid more, but it is peace of mind and I know that if they want to steal my bycicle, they are going to spend a very long time trying to. I am assuming it won't be worth their while.

I am sure in less crime congested areas, this cable would work fine.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Works wonderfully, May 28, 2009
By Bradley Tonnesen (Arlington, VA United States)
The bracket supplied with this lock makes attaching and detaching the lock from the bike a breeze.
The lock itself is easy to use:
-The numbers turn easily, but not too easily.
-Changing the combo is simple and straightforward.
-The cable stays coiled unless you uncoil it.
-The cable is long enough to secure your bike to most anything you might need to secure it to.

If i were in the market for another cable lock, this would be at the top of my list.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  A++ grade, quality cable lock with 10k possible combinations, August 30, 2009
By Atrik (Long Island, New York, USA)
First of all, I am a hardcore biker in NYC. And by living in NYC, I know how often the bikes get stolen. So, a durable cable lock is a must for me. I was looking for a good, reliable and cheap cable lock for my bikes that I can use it without keys (so that I don't have to worry about loosing keys).
I began my search from Wal-Mart, and found that a thick cable locks with keys start around 15 bucks, but I didnt found them extremely reliable, so I went to many well known sports stores, but it was the similar kind of situation there as well. Finally, while searching online, when I glanced over this lock, with 4.5 out of 5 stars review, thought to give it a try.
And I must say, it hasn't disappointed me at all.

This lock is an extremely high quality, logically made, durable and most importantly CHEAP. You are paying very little for what you get.

Two thumbs up for both Amazon as well as Avenir. Might end up buying more of these.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Versatile, strong product, March 26, 2009
By Isis
I bought this to use not a as a bike lock, but a luggage lock. I spent two months abroad during which time I was living in hostels and used public transportation in a city with known crime. With that in mind, and knowing that the hostel (out of 3 available, the one with the best ratings) had reports of people just walking off with someone else's luggage, I purchased this bike lock. I was able to actually sleep at night with my luggage locked to my bed, and leave the hostel during the day without wondering if I'd come back to an empty room. That being said, I agree with another reviewer who said that if someone wants to steal it (bike or luggage) it'll happen.

PROS
*Sturdy, well-built (especially the combination part, it does not feel as though it could be easily broken)
*Sense of security (though my room mates thought I was a crazy American)
*Length allowed me to strap two large suitcases and a camera case to a bed
*Can be used to lock up almost anything and comes with a special piece that locks around the bike itself

CONS
*Heavy (but at least you know your item is protected)
*Resetting the combination is too easy, so I worried that someone would be able to either reset it and run off with my luggage or reset it so I couldn't get my luggage
*Item coiled so tightly I had a hell of a time trying to stretch out the kinks to wrap it around my luggage...especially when pulled taut, I had to be careful to either not let it snap back, or duck to avoid getting taken out when it recoiled. This is a heavy item, so I didn't take lightly to the thought of being smacked in the face by it.

Overall, I am pleased with this purchase and the versatility of the item. It was a great deal and I'll recommend it to anyone else planning a hostel stay or a bike purchase.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Lock stuck, easy to break off, July 17, 2010
By Paul E. Whitaker (Bethesda, MD)
The lock stuck in an halfway-in position, locked and was unable to be opened. I got two locking wrenches and twisted the number dial in opposite directions and it broke in half. It doesn't seem like this would deter any would-be thief.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Go to a fire station if you can't open this lock, June 5, 2010
By Y. Wang (NY, USA)
I bought the lock but never used it until today when I went to a park and locked my bike on a post. When I came back I found that I can't open the lock using the correct pass code. I have only one pass code for all my stuff, so my memory can't be wrong. I tried adjacent codes and no luck! I spent another hour or so trying to find other ways---no luck! I looked at the reviews on Amazon with my phone and found that other two people had the same problem with this lock. It changes the pass code automatically and randomly! They had to cut it. I have to go home with this bike! What can I do?

Luckily somebody told me that I could borrow a wire-cutter from the nearby fire station. He is right! The firemen were so nice that they drove their beautiful firetruck and moved a huge wire-cutter to the park. Of course, the lock was cut open like a beef stick with that monster!

So the lock works, but it works too well. I highly recommend it if you don't want to use your bike any more. If this really happens (and it should happen very soon), go to a nearby fire station ;-)

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good basic bicycle security when you need it, March 13, 2009
By JargonTalk (Bucks County, PA USA)
It's been said many times that the purpose of a lock is to keep honorable people honest, and in that I agree. This Avenir Coil Combo Cable Lock does a good job protecting your investment in your bike. It features strong multi-strand coiled steel cable in a convenient 6-foot length. It's covered in vinyl to protect your bike's finish, and its 10mm thickness adds to its security.

The integrated 4-digit combination lock can be set and re-set as desired... just be sure to write down the combination and keep it in a safe place. This cable lock includes a lock mount bracket that should be mounted on the seat tube of the bike, or on the top tube if necessary. If there's no room left (due to water bottles, etc.), then the cable lock can be wrapped around the seat post just under the seat.

This one has does a good job in protecting one of my bikes. I can't find anything to fault with it when it comes to good basic security.

If you have a hard time remembering the numbers, another good combination (no pun intended) would be the Master Lock 6-Foot Self Coiling Cable in conjunction with the Wordlock 5-Letter Combination Padlock, which is available in Spanish (for extra security) or in English, with its 100,000 word and letter combinations. Another worthy version to consider is the Wordlock 4-Letter 5-Foot Cable Bike Lock, a heavy duty braided steel cable lock that is tough, weather resistant, and is user friendly for kids and adults alike.

Whichever choice you make, be sure to lock your bike, even if you're just leaving it for a moment. Remember, locks keep honorable people honest.

Enjoy your ride!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Does what it's supposed to do....creates a buffer zone., September 8, 2009
By wisetraveller (New York, USA)
It does what it's intended to do. It creates a barrier of tima and pressure around your bike and that is enough to deter unprofessional looters. However, if you live in NYC or in other high crime areas where you buy bikes knowing that you will only be able to use them for few months, you might want to look into real protection apart from this. This is just a supplementary bike protection device, not a U-Lock. I coil it around my seat-post when unlocked.

Pros:
Quality
Utility
Ease of use and weight

Cons:
Price(I am a student)
The holder apparatus is flimsy and you will not use it.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Worthless lock, April 26, 2010
By Brian Samson (Tempe, Arizona)
This lock is worthless. I changed the combination, used it once and then the second time I used it it wouldn't unlock. I tried the custom combo and the original. I had to cut it in half with a bolt cutter. I'm thinking about trying all 10k combinations just to see if it will ever unlock, but I doubt it. Complete waste of money. I bought this so I could carry around a lightweight lock for low-security needs (grocery store, etc) but I guess I'll stick with my U-lock from now on because at least I can open that one consistently.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Working out so far, September 5, 2008
By K. Rybarczyk (CA)
It is a little difficult to attach this, but not majorly. I am an extremely weak individual and found it a little trying to get the mount figured out because there are removable rings and I wasn't sure how many I would need, or how to get the mount to open enough to fit around the bike. However, I DID get it figured out eventually and now it's been perfect with no problems and an easy on and off as needed. The lock is also easy to set with your own combination.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Will not unlock, May 18, 2010
By wasionthenet (Chicago)
I have the exact same problem Brian had. I set my own custom combination just fine, and it locked and unlocked with no problem at first. Then I tried testing it on my bike, wrapping it around as if I were locking it to something. So I locked it, and now my custom code no longer works to unlock it. I know for a fact that I remember my code correctly. I can only assume a faulty internal mechanism is either jamming it or caused the combination to change. My attempts to discern a different combination by trying to listen for distinctive clicks have been unsuccessful, so I'll probably have to cut it before I can use my bike again.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Think twice about this lock ..., April 14, 2011
By Eco Chick (Northern Virginia, USA)
I used this lock a few times without incident and then what happened to others, happened to me. Somehow the combination was reset when I locked up my bike. Either it was a random event, or it happened easily enough when I locked it, but either way, it shouldn't have happened and yet, it did.

After two hours of trying variations on the original combination, the default setting and the crazed random spinning of the numbers, we gave up. Fortunately we were close to home so we were able to cut through the cable with some effort. Had we been bike thieves, I'm sure we could have done it faster and easier. A very frustrating experience. Oh, and don't count on the police to be able to help you cut the cable. We were told they couldn't and wouldn't, so I'm not really sure what we would have done had we been away from home. Even though it's heavier and more cumbersome, I'm going back to my Krytonite lock. If you're looking for a bike lock, keep looking ...

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Strong but hard to use by elder, December 7, 2010
By Amazoned (California)
Bought this for a elder family member for his bicycle. It secure nicely on the frame, but taking it out and uncurl it took a lot of effort for a 70+ man. Otherwise the cable feels strong and (I hope) difficult to cut with tools that can be used in broad daylight.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Super, October 25, 2009
By S. Moon
I really like this cable lock. I wouldn't use it in New York City, but for the suburban bike paths I use it's totally adequate.

The mounting bracket is very well thought out, and will fit a range of tube sizes by adding/removing inserts.

The lock mechanism is very smooth and easy to turn. Setting your combination is easy.

The 6 foot length is just right.

The self-coiling cable is very convenient to use.

Not too heavy.

No negatives.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Keeps Honest People Honest, June 3, 2009
By Point Man (Point Roberts WA)
The lock performs as any other of it's type. I prefer the combo style since I don't want to carry another key. I use it only when I go into a store in our neighbourhood. I don't have to lock my bike at home so it's the perfect match for what I need. The holder is great, I don't even know the lock is there. So a good purchase for anyone in the same situation.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Strong and convenient, June 1, 2009
By DRD (UT)
This lock is well built and sturdy. It conveniently fastens to and releases from a base under the cross bar of my bike. The tumblers rotate smoothly. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is it will not open unless the correct numbers are aligned exactly. Even if you have the right sequence of numbers in a line if one is just a hair off it will not open. Excellent lock though and very satisfied with the purchase.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Easier to cut than butter - Do not buy, July 8, 2010

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Very Good Lock, July 14, 2010
By Susan Liebell
This is a very good lock -- easy to set combination, easy to lock up bike given how it is wound. Clips onto the bike from four different direction which is helpful when you have a water bottle on the bike. The only issue is getting the clamp that holds the lock securely fastened. The kit includes some inserts but my bike (Trek) could not use the slimmest one and without an insert, the clamp slides on the bike. I am STILL happy with the lock but better instructions and some advice on the clamp would have prevented a LOT of frustration and mangling of the screws to undo the the clamp once it was clear it was sliding around.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Strong and easy to use but.., May 7, 2010
By buff-smartbuyer
This lock is functional and seems strong. I like combination locks over key locks so you don't have to worry about a key and loosing it. The only downfall in my opinion is cable does not coil or pack well. If you are a serious road biker and are concerned with excess weight and storing this during long rides, this lock is not for you. It should work great for the leisure rider and everyday bike enthusiast.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Security For The Ideal World, February 6, 2010
By Duane Thorp (Rio Rancho, NM United States)
Remember, locks are only to sway the honest person from temptation - the thief with bolt cutters can open this cable like slicing through butter. A perfect fit for me; easy to use, the combination can be changed very simply and it is easily stored under the bicycle seat when not in use. I saw no need for the bracket provided for storage. Nice length and strength for the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great lock for the price., January 7, 2010
By CasperImproved (Mi, USA)
Of course, this is not the "best" lock you can get, but it is a deterrent that meets my requirements and at the price, is a great buy.

I put the mount on the frame on the top tube close to the seat. The quick release has a confident, solid click into place for attaching the lock cable. The cable itself retains the coil well, and it does not rub against the bike frame while riding so no wear marks. It's also a rather light lock solution for being 10mm compared to others I checked out when shopping.

The combination is easy to set, and easy to change.

If for some reason I buy a second bike, I would be happy to buy this lock to go with it.

You can't beat it for the price/weight/performance.

By Book, game maven (Chapel Hill, NC)
It's relatively cheap and it's only a bit big, making it a bit in the way sometimes. Also you realise that it would be easy for anyone to see the combination on it since it is shown all over when you unlock it, but guess that's the same problem for all of this kind

4.0 out of 5 stars.  good for what it is, September 11, 2009
By karesanti (Brooklyn, USA)
The combo lock is easy and convenient but winding the coil around my bike for storage and unwinding it to lock up the bike is a pain. There wasn't anywhere on my bike that the holder thingy could be put so I had to store it under the seat. In retrospect I wish I had gotten a small U lock instead.
However this works, I've had no problems with it.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good value., February 19, 2009
By Mikatoga (California)
I'm pleased eith this cable-lock. It's a bit heavier than I'd like, but I recently had a bike stolen when the thief cut a lighter cable, so I'm accepting that I'll have to have better protection. Unlike others, I find the bracket was easy to mount and holds the cable securely on the seat post. The numbers on the lock are large enough that they're easy to read and align when unlocking.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Won't stop thieves., May 24, 2010
By Kurt (Fairfax, VA)
I had this lock. I also had a Trek 4300 mountain bike with disc brakes. Then one day I had neither. That's when I found out that bike thieves can get through cable locks like this in about half a minute. If you're in a small town where the only thing you have to worry about is neighborhood kids, you might be okay with this. If you want security, get a u-lock. The better ones have warranties but cost more--whether it's worth it depends on your bike's value.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice combo. Horrible cable., January 29, 2010
By C. Bishop
So the combo part of the lock worked great. I bought this lock to secure my wheels after my wife's wheels weere stolen from her bike. Thinking that this would be a good deterent I came home to find my cable cut within 24 and quite possibly 12 hors of being installed. I tried to return the lock but the retailer said they couldn't because it was not defective. I disagreed with his assesment of the lock not being defective. In my opinion the lock wouldn't stop anyone from getting you bike. They won't even deal with the combo part. They'll just get some bolt cutters and go to town. Luckily we both had kryptonite u-locks to secure the frames.

Apparently whenever it wants to, it will change my first # from "1" to "0" as I have observed now that I am troubleshooting it. If you don't mind a key, get a key lock. If not, buy a DIFFERENT combo lock!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Avenir Coil Combo Cable Lock, July 4, 2011
By Ricky H. (Bryan, Texas)
Very nice lock for the price. Simple to use for my 10-year old niece and she figured out on her own how to change the combo. She'll be riding her new bike to school for the first time and I wanted to get her a simple-to-use lock to secure the bike.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good lock, May 1, 2010
By C. Harry (California)
Works great. The length of the lock is good and it's very easy to use. The combination can be quickly reset as desired--no need to memorize a random number or carry a key with you.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great lock for the money, January 30, 2010
By J. Higgason (San Diego, CA USA)
This combo lock is ruggedly built and the mechanism works well.
Large, easy to see numbering on the barrel and it is easy to change the combination.
I also like the quick mount / dismount frame holder accessory that is included.

Just what is needed if you live in a fairly safe area.
Would not withstand cable cutters

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice bike lock., October 24, 2009
By Peace, love, play ball (Northeast)
Combo lock avoids new to stow a key. It's a decent length even for two bikes together. Not sure about the strength of the cable. If someone wants to cut through it badly enough, I imagine they will. But it's a deterrent.

Great quality in every respect, so far. (I haven't had it for long, so I don't know how well it'll do in a couple of years.)

Unless you have strong legs you will feel the additional weight of this cable lock. Otherwise it works fine.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great product with customizable code, April 8, 2010
By C. Courter (California)
I purchased this product for my son and his new bike. I didn't want a lock with a key, as he is forever losing the keys. Padlocks tend to disappear when not in use, as well. I saw this, saw it had good review scores, and purchased it.

What I love best about it is that the code is one you choose. This made it easy for my son to pick a set of 4 numbers that he can easily remember. And it was easy to choose it, and easy to change it.

It's also long enough to wrap around both tires, the frame, and the pole we use to secure the bike (when he remembers that is!).

I highly recommend this for any child or adult, as it really is easy and simple to use.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Does the job, March 29, 2010

Good lock for the money. Easy to set up a personal code and uncoils rather easily. My only gripe is that the bracket was broken.
