Avenir Tubes have not served me well, October 6, 2009
By Daniel P. Ayo
|
|
I've gone through 3 tubes in less than a month. The problem I have is when I pull the pump head off the Presta valve. The valve stem separates from the tube leaving a large hole in it. I think the problem is the tubes. Will not buy again... No Way!
I plan to purchase either Quality or Michelin tubes this time. I'm hoping they are better built.

Mediocre, November 1, 2009

I've been using this brand/style of tube on my road bike for the past 18 months (mostly because it's the only tube readily available at Dick's). I've noticed that some (~20%) of the tubes have 'soft' spots that show up as dips when the tube is even just partially inflated. These tubes tend to last me about a week (~30 miles) before they flat. However, if the tube doesn't have any soft spots I'm able to use them until I hit something that my tires just can't protect any tube against.

Both failed within 2 months/800 miles, June 12, 2011

Avoid these tubes. The price is quite unattractive if it means I'll be buying 12 of these a year.
I ride on smooth roads with minimal debris, and the tubes failed within days of each other after less than two months. I don't think I need to say any more.

Avenir tubes, NEVER again!!!!!, April 1, 2011

Like others on this page, I too have had the tube go flat after pulling the pump off the presta valve. At least this time, the tube had the decency to wait until I got my pump put away to go flat. And also like others here, this was my LAST Avenir tube EVER. Let's see now, $5.99 for a tube to just go flat first time pumping it up? At least the sports store took it back. I've had 5 Avenir tubes in the last 4 weeks. Problem is, these are the only tubes any of the sports shops around here carry, and there's no decent bike shops closeby. So next time I'm in Brea, it's back to Two Wheeler Dealer for some good tubes. Never had any problems with Continental tubes and tires, so it's back to that brand.

Junk, August 6, 2010
By Toni N Sanderson

I've had the exact same problem as someone has mentioned before me: I go to remove my pump and the valve stem rips right out of the tube. I bought four of them, and this occurred upon the first inflation of the first tube I installed. Got zero miles out of it. After about one month, two of them did the same again. I'm on my last Avenir tube, and I mean the LAST. Immensely irritating and a waste of time and money.

Not too bad, June 24, 2011

I've always used these tubes and recently haven't had the best of luck with them. The tube I had on punctured from a piece of wire that I ran over, so I put on a new tube and before I even used it the valve broke while I was pumping it up. I am not very impressed with these tubes, but for the money they cost you are getting what you pay for.

Basic tube, good deal for the price, will update upon first flat., June 17, 2011
By Daniel J. Thompson (Fountain Valley, CA)

My old front tube's valve had become so corroded I had to take a pair of pliers to let the air out - and the tire, a Michelin Pro 2 race (no typo, Pro Two), had been on so long past its last production date, the bead was fusing to my rims.
Pulled the tube out of the box, skipped the talcum powder on account of not having any, got one bead over the rim (using Michelin Pro 3 Race this round, on a Dura Ace 7800 wheelset) and slipped in my tire liner (a trimmed-down michelin pro 2 race tire - cool trick when your sidewalls give out but the middle is still in good condition) and the Avenir Premium Tube, and set to work on the second rim.
The tube seems a bit long for the wheel at first, I had to finagle it quite a bit to get it all the way under the tire, and quite a bit more to actually set the second bead. That's typical with the Michelin Pro 3's, I've heard, but it still gave me some frustration.
Gradually put a bit of air in and worked the tire/liner/tube around, getting all the potential pinches out and straigtening everything, then brought it to about 100, 110 PSI - I'm using a Topeak Pocketrocket MasterBlaster, so the valve is wiggling quite a bit as I inflate, despite the threaded nut to keep it relatively still.
Work it around one more time to make sure I don't have any pinches, and re-mount and take it out for a spin...works well so far. Tube is even and holds pressure evenly.
Puncture resistance will have to be a future determination, I suppose I'll update later on my first flat with these and what caused it. If you're reading this with no post scripts, the tube is still doing fine.

the 36MM valve is just a little short for my rims, too. I does work, but a struggle. Other than that reasonably prices and no problems, so far.

Valves too short, May 24, 2010
By Jason DeVoe (Tucson, AZ United States)

The tubes are high quality at a good price. however, the 36mm stem is just too short. At least have some options like other tubes do.

60% Flat within 1 hour of inflation, August 30, 2011
By Spinnakr

TL;DR VERSION: DO NOT BUY THESE TUBES.
I have, as of about 15 minutes ago, used 5 of these tubes. I have had one - and only one - survive more than 24 hours at a proper inflation.
I'm running a GMC Denali Pro with stock rims and Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires. The tires are rated to 115 PSI (70 PSI minimum) and I generally inflate slowly to 105 PSI. I ride roughly 75-100 miles per week minimum. I have had one of these tubes survive (thus far) about a month; 3 of the other 4 failed either during inflation or immediately after. The first failure was with the stock (terrible) tires, and due to a puncture. Also worth noting: the puncture caused a complete blowout and shredded the tire. All other failures were in the exact same spot - the seam in the sidewall of the tube. I have checked my rims, spokes, tire, and bead. The problem is the tires. Avoid them.

Tubes, August 30, 2011

These tubes work great, havent had a flat in 500 miles. I personally like the long stems but because I didnt pay attention so ending up with the shorties wasnt the end of the world. And a world without a flat is a good world!

Does the job, December 23, 2011
By MSO

four months later I haven't had a flat. Most importantly, I buy good tires (continental gatorskin all the way, don't do cheapies) and when you do that, you can use most any tube. Don't be fooled by your LBS into thinking you need to buy special tubes, its all in the tire. Anyways, these are a great price and as good as anything else

first change, October 22, 2011
By DVD junkie (NLV, NV USA)

This is the first time that I did the tube change myself. It went well now I will see if there are any pin holes in it, since the bike shop tubes had pin holes.
