The best tube I have ever used!, July 12, 2009
By J. Holston
|
|
Real life story first: I had a staple in my tire that I missed no matter how many times I ran my finger along the inside of the tire and looked at the outside. I burned through 2 "regular" tubes and could not figure out why. I put this tube in and it stayed inflated despite the staple (which I still didn't know was there). It was just by chance that I saw the staple from the outside when I was putting the tire back on with this tube inside and fully inflated. These tubes are excellent! I have been riding for about 9 months since then with zero flats and almost no loss in pressure over time. They are very thick; hence they are heavier than a normal tube. Those of you who measure bike parts in ounces, look elsewhere! Everyone else, enjoy the freedom of riding without flat tires!

Good idea, problematic execution by Avenir, September 14, 2010
By ChicagoCPA (Chicago)
|
|
I used to get a bunch of flats every year until I discovered Armadillo tires (they use Kevlar). Even after that however, it was still 1 to 2 flats a year.
It was a tad difficult to get it in, but I notice no difference in my ride, and so far, after 1 month and 500 miles on Chicago's city streets, I have not had a flat tire and I do notice that I do not need to refill my tire quite as often.
It is too bulky to carry as a spare. I have a standard tube in my bag in case of a flat.
Time will tell.
<Update - Time has passed and I am less impressed. I did get a flat (understandable as it was a large nail), however as I was checking for holes to repair, I felt air coming from the base of the stem. On its own, I would shrug it off as a mistake on my part perhaps being too aggresive taking it off (which I wasn't). However I am now the third person reporting a problem with the connection between the stem and the rest of the tube, which points, to me at least, to a design or manufacturing problem.
Thick rubber tubes are a very nice idea, but for now, I would use a different company. Avenir has a problem with their process creating these tubes.)

Thorp-Resistant Lube, September 23, 2010
By A casual stroll through the lu.. (Prague)
|
|
Ignore the "heavy tube" comments, this is a typical Thorn-Resistant tube that you used to get as a kid to help avoid flats. Nothing's changed. It's thick, because it's a "Thorn-Resistant" tube. These thick tubes provide more protection against punctures.
I've been using these since I was a kid. I ride fine with them. I don't wear Spandex, have a Co2 Bike Pump (I like a basic bicycle Hand Pump), nor do I have an expensive bicycle and weigh my bicycle frame (I carry 2 Thorn-Resistant tubes on my rack). I have a heavy bicycle and want to avoid flats on long commutes, that is what this tube is for.
Caution must be used when using a gas station air pump. Some are designed to cut off before the high pressures used in many bicycle tires are reached. Other operate at such a high pressure that the tire can be burst. There is also a slight difference between the modern standard for Schrader valves on an automobile and that on a bicycle which makes some more recent valves on gas station pumps a poor fit.
How to Fix a Flat Tire
Reinstall the tube. Put a little air in the tube, just enough to give it a little form, and put it into the tire.
Reinstall the tire. Stick the valve through the valve hole. With your fingers, work the lip of the tire into the wheel rim, on only one side. You may need to use a tire lever for the last bit. Once you've done one side completely, do the other side. Be careful not to pinch the tube between the tire and the rim, especially when you're using the lever. If it's too hard to get the tire on the rim, try releasing more air.
Reinstall the wheel. Put the wheel back on your bike. If your wheel uses nuts, then alternate between each side a few times as you tighten -- don't tighten one side completely before starting the other. If you have quick release, make sure you put it on tight enough. It's tight enough when the quick release lever offers some resistance and leaves a mark on your hand. After you put the wheel on, tug on it pretty hard to double-check that it's not loose. Also make sure it's on straight -- if it's rubbing on the brakes when it spins, it'll be a lot harder to pedal.
Inflate and Release. Pump up the tire, then let most of the air out again. This will help work out any kinks where the tube might have been pinched. (A pinched tube will pop as soon as you air it up all the way and sit down on the bike.) There's some debate over whether this really helps, but it certainly can't hurt.
Reinflate the tire. Inflate the tire until it's very firm. You should be able to just barely make a small dent in the tire by pressing on it with your thumb while your fingers hold the wheel under it.
Put the valve cap back on. This will help keep the air in if the valve has a slow leak.
Reconnect the brake cable. Don't forget this part!
If the stem was probably installed at an angle, it will cut it off after awile, make sure the new tube is installed with the stem straight and you should not have a problem.

Heavy duty tube, April 14, 2010
By Smart Shopper (Hoquiam, WA)
|
|
There is no doubt in my mind that this is about as good a tube as you can get. If you blow this thing out, good job to you.
Update: It has been over a year since I purchased this tube for my bike, and I haven't blown it out yet. That is good considering I was going through about 1 or so a month before.

Bad luck or shoddy manufacturing?, August 31, 2009
By Otis (NYC)
|
|
Bought this tube to replace a stock tube that had a slow leak. For the first 5 days it worked just fine, held the air and didn't lose pressure. On the 6th day riding it (this morning) the valve stem decided to shoot off the tube - completely off the tube. I found it on the ground when I was looked down to see why I was having trouble moving forward. Luckily it happened while I was waiting for a light to change, rather than seconds before when i was dodging taxis and delivery trucks in the fun Manhattan morning rush hour. I ride a mountain bike, and don't over-pressurize my tires due to the plethora of pot holes on the streets. It could have just been bad luck - there are defects in every manufacturing process, but... I'm going to go with a different brand for it's replacement.

My Review, March 29, 2010
By Noodj (Saint Petersburg, Fl)
|
|
These are heavy duty tubes. I did not expect them to be as thick as they are and I mean they are thick. I installed these tubes on two of my bikes so far but haven't had a chance to go for a long ride yet. But I didn't have any problems with installation. I removed the original tubes and installed these and I used one of the ORIGINAL tubes as a spare in case I do have a flat. I would not use one of these as a spare as they are about the weight of three regular tubes combined.
I have a Burley trailer that uses 20x1.75 tubes and even ordered tubes for it as I don't want any flats. And even if I do these are so thick that I could probably run the tires flat and still keep going.
I was leary about ordering these at first but at this time I am very please with this product. Just take your time and make sure that the tire seats itself properly on the rim and I would recommend these to others and I will also update my review of them after I get some miles on these tubes.
Since these tubes are so thick and heavy it might take some more effort to pedal because of the rotational force that is involved. I don't think I would use these on my road bike because of that. But for the commuter bike that I plan on riding to work (7 miles one way) or the bike for pulling by trailer it won't matter that much to me. I don't want to fix a flat. If you are planning on riding a long distance (10 to 20 miles or more) stay with the lighter tubes and just carry a spare tube in case you have a flat.

Valve tore off!, June 18, 2011
By lialia
|
|
I didn't go through all the reviews before buying this but now that I look through them again, I seem to have had the same problem as a couple others have mentioned. The new tube lasted me 15 minutes before it blew out. I took it to a bike repair shop thinking there was something else wrong and the guy told me the valve had torn off. The package also arrived looking like someone had opened the box already (and like someone else also mentioned, there were also no elastics around the tube as depicted in the picture).

I bought 4 of these and have yet to puncture the first two, I've had seashells and pieces of glass get stuck to my tires and these tubes are fine!! A little on the heavy side but if you like to beat on your rims and roll through anything these are for you.

3 out of 4 is bad, June 27, 2009

Bought four of these tubes to replace the stock tubes in two bikes. One of the tubes had a pinhole leak near the valve stem. A 25% failure rate out of the box? I'm not too impressed.

Valve Issues, June 20, 2011
By Kalavinka (Columbus, OHIO United States)
|
|
I wish I had read the reviews on this product. I installed the tire and was having some trouble pumping in more air. I could hear a lot of air leaking through the pump. I gently yanked on the valve to make sure that it was completely through the tire rim. I was suprised when the valve came completely off. I did not even yank on it all that hard.
I was initially impressed with the heaviness of the rubber. It certainly is a more substantial tube than that which I was replacing. However, when it comes down to it--- it does not matter how thick the rubber is if the valve is so flimsy that it falls off.

Tuff tube, January 21, 2011
By 2me

I am currently deployed to Iraq and it seems that everything here has thorns that will puncture a bicycle tire. So I had to try the Avenir Thorn-Resistant Schrader valve MTB tube and so far the tube is winning the battle over the thorns. I would recommend it to anyone who wants a reliable tube.
Thanks

Bad valve stems?, June 1, 2011
By Gatorfreak

I got two of these. Installed and inflated to 40 psi. All was well. Then inflated to 60 psi a few minutes later and one of the valve stems breaks. Haven't even got it on the bike yet! As other reviewers have mentioned, these seem to have a high failure rate with the valve stems.

Great Tube Maybe To Great, April 17, 2011
By OXONOXO (Pine Island FL)
|
|
Purchased these a couple of months ago, zero problems, I ride six days a week some off-road, my tires take a beating. I had to adjust the tubes quite a few times before they would seat properly, i.e. let the air out, slide the tire until the valve stem is strait then reinflate. I increased the air pressure attempting to keep the tube in place. It worked, my tires are rock solid, unfortunately this is causing the rear tire to seperate along the bead (the tire is six months new). I can't fault the tube. Last year I had a slime tube blow up and literally blew my tire apart. If it was'nt so funny I would've been mad. One thing these tubes will make you work slightly harder as their noticably heavier. PS It's been 3 months and I'm still riding! I've added air once or twice in the last 2 months and only several pounds. Obviously from reading other reviews these tubes have issues...but not mine. It's funny, the 'big chain' stores only sell cheap tubes and slime tubes, both of which are Chinese garbage. Seems like a quality tube would own the market! It's a conspiracy I tell you! It's enough to kink your valve stem!

Avenir Thorn-Resistant Schrader valve MTB tube, March 24, 2011
By P. Khine
|
|
Ordered 2 of them. Pretty sure it will be thorn resistant because the tube is at least 3 times the size and weight of the regular tubes. If you are trying to reduce the weight of your bike, this isn't for you.
Update : I just installed these about a week ago. It makes the bike a lot heavier. I would stick to the regular thin tubes.

It's a replacement tube, and it works!, September 13, 2010

Not too much to say about this tube at this time. It replaced a tube that has been on my bike since 1994. Since I expect my tubes to last that long, I decided to go for a heavier, thorn-resistant one. It went on fine and works as advertised.

Very happy with service I received and the tubes were of high quality. No problems and a lot less hassle than going to the store and fighting traffic.
The tubes are a lot thicker that the normal size tubes and no problem putting them in the rim and tire. It was a no brainer to use this product.

A low quality item due to poor valve stem attachment, November 10, 2011
By MTM
|
|
Based on my experience with this product, this item can only be described as poor quality. The tube we received like numerous others that have left reviews suffered very quickly from separation between the valve connection and the bike tube within a very short amount of time. This failure point cannot be easily patched like a hole in another part of the tube where the surface area is consistent so as a result the tube had to be thrown away.
In my case the tube installed easily enough so no stretching or pulling was required to fit the tube into the tire and onto the bike rim, and for about 6-7 short bike rides around the neighborhood (no trail usage seen) everything was fine. However after just a few months the tube failed and when finally removing the tire to see if the tube could be patched I found the small tear between the valve stem connection and the rest of the tube that others have reported.
Our tube was bought in late 2009 so perhaps this was a manufacturing problem that has been addressed, but I chose to replace it with a different brand rather than take a chance on this same model again.
Two other "premium" tubes by same manufacturer of a different size purchased at the same time for a different bike continue to work well to this day so again perhaps it is this particular tube that had the stem issue.

Worst inner tube ever., September 20, 2011
By cn
|
|
I am tired of inner tube failure (1 or 2 a month) so I thought a heavy duty tube might be worth a try. This Avenir T-R tube certainly appeared to be the answer, with it's heavy wall construction. Surely, the premium price I paid for the extra thick walled product, I would be rewarded with a long trouble free service life.
Not so. The valve stem blew completely off after 1.5 hours. Totally disgusted with quality of product. I will avoid brand in future.
Not worth the 1 star.

Lasted 2 months before wearing thru on the inside, August 16, 2011
By Runner1326
|
|
The tube seems extra thick toward the ground, but the side that is towards the rim is paper thin. It wore through at a weak spot after 2 months. I checked the inside of my rim to make sure there were no rough spots or bumpy spoke ends that would have caused it... nothing. Just a piece of garbage inner tube. The return period was only a month, so I'm out of luck returning it, too. I'd HIGHLY recommend getting a different tube.

So far these tubes have performed well and the price is reasonable.
I haven't used them long enough to say much about their durability or thorn resistance but they are definitely thicker than your average tube. When holding them and inspecting them, they look and feel very well made.
Despite being much thicker than average, they installed without any issues.

wrong size, July 29, 2011
By bbgraga
|
|
I received two tubes in a single order. One worked out perfectly. The other was mislabeled by Avenir as 26 x 1.95-2.2125 although it is 24 x 1.75. It seems that Avenir outsources those tires from Duro and the original embedded Duro label is correct. Avenir printed an incorrect label on it and put it in the wrong box. I also have to note that the one month return policy for a spare tube is over-restrictive: one does not use it until he has a flat.

Installed these after reducing my tire size from 2.10 to 1.95 (Kenda Pathfinder tires). Easy to install. Went on a 32 mile paved trail ride and the combo worked pretty well. Can't comment on weight or anything since I installed the tires and tubes on an old rigid cro-moly mountain bike that isn't a lightweight rig.

Tire Defective, December 8, 2010
By Morpheus (Florida USA)
|
|
I got the tube and seems to work ok then I got a flat. when I took the tire off I could see it was coming from a defect in the tube, it was a Split. There was no puncture in the tire. It was without question a defect in the manufacturing process. I attempted to repair however the patch wouldn't work. I have had the tires for more than 30 days so I would not be able to return them. Unfortunately, these seem to be the only kind of tires offered here that are heavy duty unless you get the tires with the slime in them. The tires with slime in them are worse as when you get a flat with the slime and the slime wont seal the tire you have no choice but to throw them away. You are not able to repair a tire that has slime in them.

Very heavy tube, August 28, 2010
By Daryl (Hot Springs, AR USA)
|
|
I gave this item four stars, as my dissatisfaction with this product is my own fault, but read on to see if your situation matches mine.
I haven't actually installed this tube yet, as it was meant to be my backup. However, I will probably not be using it as my backup because it is extremely bulky, so much so that it can't be stowed in my under seat pack, even by itself. It is also quite noticeably heavy. Its heavy enough that I don't believe I will be installing this at all, because I can't imagine how this extra weight in the tire wouldn't drastically impact performance.
If you need the thorn resistance of this tube and don't mind the added weight, then I'm sure this tube would be great, but for me I just needed a backup tube and I bought the wrong thing.

Excellent use in the western NC mountains, January 10, 2012
By T. Sessoms
|
|
Heard mixed reviews on this replacement, not sure why, about people saying they don't last look. No matter what tube you use, it's going to depend on lots of natural variables.. your weight, the rim, what you're riding on, the conditions etc..
Used a pair of these in some old tires (the tires were about 13 years old) for 3 days in the mountains, without issue. Didn't lose any air either. About 150lbs on them.
Solid, inexpensive, quality replacements.

I have about 100 miles on these tubes with new tiers and have no issues. Highly reccomend them if you are adding new tires or just need a good quality tube.

Worked exactly as advertised. How much can you say about an inner tube?! It fit, it held air, it kept my old Gardenway cart going. HP
