4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Bike for the money, June 12, 2008
By Old and slow (Salt Lake City , Utah)
Length:: 1:02 Mins

[...]
It gets me the 9 mile round trip(about 20 to 25 mins each way ) back and forth to work easy. I am over the max weight limit by 8 pounds and it still does well. The 25 mins is on the way home all uphill grade and that is with stopping at traffic lights.

Behind the rear reflecter is a switch to change battery sides if you get an extra battery. The battery slides into the slot and and has 5 keys included to lock it into place, does not spark, as I heard happens to some of the other electric bikes when you plug them in.

Recharges in about 3 hours.
The picture is blue but the bike is black.
Pretty easy to put together, just the front wheel, handdle bars, seat and peddles. All electrical parts are already done for you.

The only thing I do not like about it is the seat while riding. It's hard.

All in all a good cheap bike, works well so far had it a month now. Using it more and more for short trips to the local store.

update 6/23/08

Did some GPS readings with the bike.
14mph uphill
17mph on flat

update 6/28/08

Lost some range. Checked tires, they were low (30psi). Filled to 60psi and range was back. Differance between Full/half and Half/empty after a ride. Used an airpump with a gage built in.

Passed Heavy traffic yesterday. Glad I don't have to deal with stop and go traffic anymore.

update 7/31/08 still working great. checking on replacement batteries, it's getting close to the 100 to 200 recharge/ 6 month life. lost 12 lbs just over the max weight now at 243 lbs.

4/15/09 Spring is here and ordered replacement battieries for my E-Zip sold here on amazn.com. Currie 12 Volt - 10 Amp Replacement Batteries (set of 2)

WRONG BATTERIES TOO BIG.and higher amp 12 instead of 10a but if I wire right it may be a better way to go.

Price: $79.00

In Stock.
Ships from and sold by Best Value Online. You will need to open the case and replace the batteries inside.

4/17/09 you can get battery pack at amazon $129.99 best way to go if you don't want to mess with the inside which are a joke.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  This Bike Rules, but may have a $$ downside, July 14, 2008
By Peter G Levine
First of all, if I walked in to any discount chain and bought a bike of this quality, I would pay at least $150. So for the balance of $250, what do you get? For starters, you get an engine to take you where you want to go. Enthusiasts call this "pedal assist" and that is really what it is. You are not passive on the bike. Here's how it works: You pedal at the same time the engine works by bringing you up to ~15 MPH. On flat ground you will continue to engage the engine to keep your speed. At this point you feel a little like walking on the moving sidewalk in an airport; you are putting in the effort to stroll and you are getting out the speed of all-out power walking. Uphill the bike makes the strenuous a breeze. Again, uphill you are still pedaling, but it's a whole lot easier. Downhill the engine is useless because you are going faster than the engine can go. It continues to rev, but inconsequentially. I use the bike to go to work, every day. I use it on everyday errands as well. I even pull my two kids (over 100 lbs) in a stroller behind the bike. I've had people stare and throw comments my way that "Hey, you were going 25 MPH up a slight hill with two kids!" I don't let on that I've a bit of help. The battery plugs in using a three prong male input that looks like a low impedance mic end. On one charge the battery lasts varying amount dependant of tire pressure, number of hills, weight of rider, amount of pedal-assistance rider is providing, etc. I've never had a problem except when pulling the stroller after about 2 miles. The battery can be taken off the bike, weighing and feeling like a heavy briefcase, and brought inside to charge. Charging takes a couple of hours or so depending on how much juice you've used. The estimate of battery life that resonated with me is 6 months. Over the course of 6 months I would drive 300 miles to work (I live ~ 1.25 miles from work). That would take ~ 17 gal of gas. At 4.25 per gal, that's $75. A replacement battery costs ~120 and shipping another 20 or so. So, as you can see, there is a bit of an economic downside there. All this is predicated on a variety of assumptions that may not be true. For instance, what if the battery lasts me 12 months because I only go relatively short distances? Then the cost of gas would be ~150 and the cost of the battery would be ~ 140. In any case, we can hope the manufacturer, Currie Technologies, allows for technology to do what technology does: get smaller, lighter and cheaper. If, however, they figure that since there is no competition for their system they can charge whatever they want, well, their bike may help the environment and reduce the chance of a heart attack, but the pain may be felt in the wallet.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  ezip review, July 8, 2008
By Brian Gillings
Received the bike in good condition traveling across the country. Took just 20 minutes to assemble.
The bike is very heavy with the 20lb battery pack on one side. The torque on the bike is good for starting to ride, but I found it poor on the hills. Speed is about 17-18 miles on the flat. One needs to ensure that the tires are pumped to 60lbs as the speed and hill climbing is impacted. Worth checking the internet for forums discussing the ezip.
Putting a higher wattage motor can help with low speed and hill climbing. Some people have installed another 12v battery in series to increase the speed to 25mph. Distance is about 7 -10 miles per charge.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Very Pleased, August 16, 2008
By Michael J. Siemer (Chattanooga, TN)
I am very pleased with this Product. This is the Third one I purchased. 1st a mens bike, I paid $100. extra in delivery from Norther Tool. Then another Mens- whent to Northern Store & Purchased to be deliverd to thier store/ saved on delivery charge. But the Best Deal was the womens Curry on Amazon.com they charged No tax and No Delivery, just a strait $389.
All the bikes work Fine. I read a few bad reviews. It appears some people have tried to unscrew the fromt break to adjust it enough to put the front tire on. Not Necessary! Just pull the whole break harnest out of its slot and back in after placing tire on. Also some in reviews could'nt get them started and sent them back. Try the on and off switch for left or right optional battery located underneith back rack.
We had one Nut come off on the Womens Pedel Arm, no problem, just tighten it back on. I dont like the fact that the Extra Battery can only be purchased through Curry at more than $140. tax/delivery. I found the same sealed batteries at a local battery store for $39. each and I'm going to replicate their harnesting shell out of wood/ luan & 1x3's routerd. Overall Very Pleased. They Ride Sweet. Peddle only on hills, they will last farther distance. God Bless, Michael Siemer, Chatt. TN

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good product, beware of size tho, August 13, 2008
By Out-and-About (Central Vermont)
The bike was everything I had hoped for -- reasonable price, good design, sturdy, easy to put together. However, I am only 5 feet 4 inches and didn't think about the frame size. It was too big for me -- I was afraid that I'd take more falls getting used to an electric throttle and so the increased size felt too unsafe. I re-sold it on craigslist to a person 5'7".

4.0 out of 5 stars.  can't beat it for the price, April 27, 2009
By esully1 (Rockledge, Fl)
If you have experience with electric bikes, don't buy this one, cause you won't like it. There are a laundry list of things that could have been done better that most people in the know on electric bikes will complain about. If your on a budget and curious, pull the trigger. You will have a hard time converting your bike for cheaper than this. This is my personal opinion part of the review.

Now I will give some real life results for range, performance and durability. I'm a 170 pound rider in florida so there are no hills except the occasional I-95 overpass. Speed: 17 mph with the wind at your back. 15 mph with it in your face. 12 to 13 mph up a modest hill. Range: 10 miles no pedalling, throttle from stop, no hills, variation of with wind and against. Speed will be noticably reduced the last couple miles. Durability: Some components cheap and not suited for this bikes added weight. 1. Kickstand wears out quickly. 2. Seat HURTS, get a cushion to go over it or get a different seat. 3. Brake levers are seated in plastic and barrel pops out if trying to adjust brakes.
Yes the bike is heavy but thats because its a steel frame bike but more importantly its an electric bike. All electric bikes are heavier than a regular bike. Bike weighs about 85 pounds with one battery. You get used to it. I do have a problem with the statement that you can add a second battery and double your range. No you can't. I mean you can add a second battery but that will not double the range. I did this and the added weight of the second battery actually decreases the range of each battery. Instead of 10 miles you only get about 8.5 miles out of one battery. Now that I think about it I guess you are doubling your range. You are doubling the range of 8.5 miles, but not 10 miles. This brings me to my next point which is the battery is a sealed lead acid type pack. It weighs about 15 pounds. If you put two on you have 30 pounds of battery. Try pedalling without motor assistance with that. Try pedaling into the wind with that. Try pedaling up a hill into the wind with that...you get my point. After about a month on this bike, I upgraded to a 36 volt set up instead of the 24 volt that it comes with and did away with the Sealed lead acid batteries for a 36 volt 20 amp hr LiFePO4 battery. This setup gives you an extra 7 to 10 mph of speed and increases the range to over 20 miles on a single battery and charge if needed.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  EZIP MTN TRAILZ ELECTRIC BIKE, August 11, 2008
By Chief Peters (Montgomery, Alabama)
I have had this Bike for one month now and it has made my life a lot easier......It is easy to use, fun and in my opinion very well made. I am a Quality Engineer by trade and quality is measured by what the customer values/wants.... Not cost or name.....This bike does what I want it to do....Point A to point B...at minimal cost. You can spend $2,000 for an electric bike....But Why? I had one problem....It came missing a box with pedaqls and some other small parts.......The maker Currie would not help me.....However, AMAZON was very fast in getting me a replacement Bike and now all is fine.....Can't beat the price and you can chose how much effort you want to put into the ride.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Ezip El. Bike, July 22, 2008
By C. Clark
UPS delivered the bike on the morning of the estimated delivery date. There was a little damage to the box but due to good packaging there was no damage to the bike. I read and followed the directions for assembly and had no problems. The brakes were easy to adjust and the chain and gearing needed no adjustment. I charged the battery overnight (about 14 hours actually) and it worked fine. It runs smoothly and I am very pleased with it.

CurrieTechnologies has lots of info for owners on their website also.

I'm very pleased with Amazon and Currie Tech on this purchase. If the bike was 20 pounds lighter I would rate it five star!

1.0 out of 5 stars.  It's a lemon., July 18, 2008
By Yoon
I bought this on the amazon last week (free shipping), but it's too heavy for handling and the packing was not good enough to protect especailly for gear system. Gear guide pulley touches rear rim, so I cannot rotate the wheel. The on/off switch doesn't work and the front brake disk was not well fitted to wheel frame and worn. The handlebar binder and reflector is coarse. Overall I don't want to recommend this bike.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Good Bike - Awful Customer Service, July 18, 2009
By dragonfire_ck (Portland, Oregon, USA)
This is a nice long rant about my terrible customer service with Currie Technologies, specifically getting replacement parts for this specific bicycle. The only reason I am not giving it a 1 is that the bike itself worked fine, while it was usable.

This bike worked great for communiting to and from work. This worked out great (about a 4.5 mile trip one-way with decent bike lanes; the battery would be nearly drained upon arriving home) for about two months. After that, the charger malfunctioned and stopped providing any power to the battery (the battery was still holding a charge despite some continued use after a few days, and the charger's light would never go into the charing state). Naturally, I contacted Currie Technologies for a replacement, only to discover they were closed for a holiday: okay, no problem, call back next week. When I called them back, I ended up waiting on hold for about 10 minutes, after which they had me explain the problems and then they insisted that the battery (which still was holding a charge after nearly a week) was the problem, and made me pay $20 to be shipped a replacement battery. On the day following the estimated delivery date, I receive a call from Currie Technologies that they needed my apartment number for FedEx to deliver the new battery to, which I had given them when I called. So, I give the guy my apartment number, and he mishears me. As I am trying to correct the number, he hangs up on me. Luckily, FedEx was able to guess and deliver the battery to the current place, and it arrives that day. So then I plug the charger into the new battery, and lo and behold, I get the exact same behavior. The next day, I use the new battery (which showed some charge from the factory), then plug it in at work, and get the same behavior again, so I call them back up (this is Friday), and they refuse to talk to me as I haven't tried to charge the battery TWICE for a minimum of twelve hours each both before and after use, despite everything behaving the exact same for both the original and new batteries. As they close at 4 PM, I was unable to call them back on Friday, and thus now have to wait to start the process to get the replacement charger until Monday, and likely will not receive the charger until well into the week (based on the time it took them to ship the battery, possibly Thursday or Friday), around which I will have had a useless electric bike for nearly a month.

Over all, while the bike worked great for me so far, I would STRONGLY recommend that anybody looking for any item Currie Technologies sells, look for a different manufacturer.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Missing Nuts and Washers Poor Customer Service From Manufacturer Curry Technologies, May 15, 2009
By M. Clark
I ordered this bike from Amazon.com and had to return it. Curry Technologies did not include in the box 2 locking washers and bolts to attach the front wheel to the forks. I do not have a bike shop around me to find replacement parts. Their frame looked to be a unique design that would be hard to find bolts and washers for.

So I called Curry Technologies thinking it would be a easy thing to get parts. WRONG!!! VERY WRONG!!!!!! They had a 10 minute wait time and then a automated computer dailed the department requested. The first customer service rep said they would transfer me after I mentioned missing parts (he hung up on me). He didn't ask what parts and we talked less than a minute. I was not rude with him and did not even raise my voice. It was only a couple bolts and washers why argue about it?? I tried to call them again thinking maybe I requested the wrong department. Once again a 10 minute automated wait, mentioned missing parts, and got hung up by a different rep in a different department. Less than a 2 minute converstaion. Both reps seem to be young out of high school kids perhaps working a call center. They both seemed friendly when they answered the phone. Both quickly hung up after a couple words. For a high priced item they sell, they should have more respectful and helpful customer service reps. Curry Technologies gave me the worst customer service I have had in a very long time that will not be forgotten. I would hate to see if I had to file a warranty claim with them.

As hard as Curry was, Amazon.com was just as easy accepting my return. The return paperwork was easy and automated. I bought this item directly through Amazon and not a marketplace seller. I hated having to repackage a huge bike that did not fit back in the box and truck it down to my local UPS store to return it. The bike was probably damaged and unsellable as it was returned because it was impossible to put back in the box. All this because Curry left out a couple nuts and bolts and could not spend more than a couple seconds talking with me on the phone. Wasted 4 hours of my time over nuts and bolts. Thank god Amazon.com has a great return policy. NOT WORTH BUYING FROM A RUDE COMPANY THAT DOES NOT CARE.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Don't buy this E-bike, July 19, 2008
By W. Shengqian
Reason: 1, battery is never big enough for a e-bike cuz of the restriction of the bike frame. Therefore can't expect great performance like those on a electric club cars. On the hills it stoped, pedaling won't work, cuz the hill is way high. Doesn't make a difference huh?

2. Let's face it, this country the united states is not designed for bikers, bike lanes are not friendly, routes are very limited for bikes.

3. The very small battery which provides very limited energy exhuasts itself very soon, I live in a mountain area, Pullman, WA to be exact, after less than 2 miles riding, the battery is out, what am I suppose to do with a 87 pounder bike, pedal it will consume triple times energy than a regular bike.

4. This perticular product, 2008 ezip, feels like some refurbished chinese product, you can get a similar product but 10 times better in china for as little as 100 dollars, but this which costs you 400 bucks has major defects, first off, the indicator light of battery next to throttle is a joke, you put the battery in, green and yellow lights are both on, the on-off switch doesn't control the whole circute, since after 5 mins without doing anything, the lights went off, power went off, no matter if your on-off swich is on or off. In riding, it can happen too, so what you gonna do my friend? you gonna lift the battery up and push it back down, to get the whole power on again. Oh and no matter when you have a little bumping on the road, the power automatically went off, so you have to ... yep, like I said, lift teh batter up and push it back down, and wait another 5 mins or another bump, to get the whole process repeat itself again.

5. I'm gonna return it, thats for sure.

6. The front brake is very hard to adjust, and unfortnately you have to deal with it, because thats the only way you can assemble the front wheel as they were only parts and non-assmebled when delivered.

7. What can you do with a e-bike really, commute less than 2 miles round-trip per day? Impossible to carry groceries? Let's face it, folks, gas price is sky high, but to live in this pathetic country the united states, you need a car, even if its a lemmon, doesn't matter, cuz you need a car, the only way to survive your job, your grocery your crazy life.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Amazingly great for the money, August 31, 2008
By LIpman photo (Chicago il)
I bought this from wall mart. Remember you have to charge and discharge the battery 3 times before it works best. But It is so much fun to ride.
You press this button and it just zooms along for about 2 hours or may be 15 to 20 miles. I love it

5.0 out of 5 stars.  good bike for the price, December 15, 2008
By A general account in elementary terms .. (Instructions given for the elementary study of the Qabalah, Assumption of God forms, Vibration of Di)
i write this review because i feel the one star reviews are unfair. most of the complaints on here are half truths and not understanding. first of all, there is not much more the 1200$elctric bikes can do than this one.
electric bikes are not going to take you up large hills, futhermore these bikes in my opinion were not designed to be workhorses. i have rode an older model buy currie on a mongoose frame, i have rode it 4-7 times a week for about 2 years. for me its perfect, i live in new orleans, the streets are flat, and rarely do i have to travel more than 5 miles. so if you live in a bike friendly city, this is a great time to get this bike.. 2 months ago this bike was availible from many dealers, price 379-429$ and you had to pay around 100$extra for shipping, and if you had a problem w the bike, you had to deal with currie, the seller stated that up front, once you order the bike like from target, if something was wrong with it when you recieved it, it was completely your responsibility
to contact currie. this happened with the second bike i ordered from target, and it was very frustrating dealing currie. thats the only legite complaint i hae read about this bike(read the reviews for the wemons and the comfort for more reviews cause its the same battery and motor)
but with amazon, if you have the time to deal with a real possibility of returnin it for another, you chance of getting a solid bike is solid
i recieved this bike last week, and everything was intact, =
also this is the last of the 08 bikes, and when they are gone the 09 will be more expensive, and probaly not sold by amazon, i know this is a long review, but it is intended for people trying to get the best for their money, and with the back of amazon, if you need a bike i just dont see how could go wrong for 225. this bike says for 13 and up, and let me say, if this had been an option15 years ago i would have loved it even more, but, parents, this is a motorized vehicle, and i do not recommend just sending your kids out on it, this is a nice bike to teach young people responsiblity, its kinda like a pet, you have to power it each time you use it to save the battery(you must keep the battery full, or it will weaken significantly), and most of all you HAVE TO BE CAREFUL, the throttle can get you in trouble when you start having fun instead of just riding. helmets are a must for young riders, a good helmet.
little update, ive now had the bike for a few months, and it is a better bike than my last currie, the seat, the tires the brakes all upgraded. the battery seems to have a little less power over all(milage) than last years model but its smaller and lighter, and it seems it goes a little faster. also it looks like maybe it would ride weird cause of the side mounted battery, but i have had no problem
update october 09, bike is holding up, battery getting weaker, so if you get a chance buy an extra one, had to buy a new charger when the end came off the original, so take extra precaution when plugging and unplugging.

First it was back ordered for more than 2 months! Second they didn't tell me after 30 days amazon cancels the order, thus making me wait even longer!

Came shipped with a bent frame and chipped paint. northern tolls customer service sucks! Rode the bike for two weeks before it broke completely! A waste of my money and time! Do not spend the money on this, put down the extra hundred dollars and get a good mountain bike.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Deal, June 27, 2009
By K. Williams (Sacramento, CA USA)
Bought this bike in December of 2008 when it was on sale for $225. I have been riding it daily for about six months now (over 500 miles so far), and am very happy with the bike.

It is heavy and not as advanced as some other electric bikes, but for the price it can't be beat. I use just the motor power, with little or no peddling. I weigh 200 lbs and it carries me at about 18 mph on level ground with no peddling. Checked it with a police speed radar.

The main drawback is the SLA battery. They are heavy, have a limited life and develop a memory, but since I rarely travel more than 5 miles at a time with mine, it has done just great so far. I plan on switching to a lithium-ion battery at some point, which are light and have a very long life with no memory. Then my E-zip will be just about as good as any of those expensive electric bikes for about 1/4 the price.

If you are looking for an entry level electric bike for short trips, you will find this bike a great deal.

I bought this bike because the price was good and it seemed like it would be fun. When I was first riding it around it was quite a bit of fun. The electric motor is not too powerful, but the little extra zip is nice.

The fun ended the first time I took the bike outside of the immediate vicinity of my house. Coming off a curb everything locked up. The back tire blew. Back and front brakes grabbed both wheels.

I didn't get to ride it long enough for this to become an issue, but the back end is extremely heavy. It'll be very difficult to ride up any kind of incline (probably even with the assist).

In summary, don't buy this bike unless you're only going to go on level ground.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  The best entry level e bike, April 17, 2009
By John H. Pittman
I bought this exact model here at amazon on december 10 2008. free of tax or shipping. it arrived instantly! it is a heavy box so fed ex kept it at the depot. I picked it up there and was delighted. Flawless and easy to assemble.
tools are provided, just allens. In the months since I did find that the 24 volt pack is of a low grade ..I added two sets of 24 volt 9 amp APC type SLA's wighing 5 lbs each which lightened the weight to distance ratio.. I can switch from right to left bank of batteries with the provided switch. It will pop a wheelie when fresh, I take it up steep hills no problem,"but remember" that this is the latestet model, and can not be altered! it will not run on 36 volts! it will heat up when stressed, but never "over heat" it is protected from that internally. I called Currie and got a new charger, a extra controller etc for the shipping costs. never needed them, it is fine. I added a good solid basket and I rewired the batterys to sit on the rack. the standard battery case is an odd size and I got rid of it. I can get 20 miles with the twin packs of batterys. and carry 50 lbs of food on my basket. remember weight to distance is a factor, so the lighter the load the farther you go. I give it five stars because it was cheap and good and has a USA website if you have a question.. the new design curries cost thousands of dollars and use this ame system but you do not get a throttle you must pedal first to make the motor work. I prefer throttle and hardly ever pedal because I dont need to LOL (also) call the currie home office for good deals as well on new bikes at cost.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  parts missing, September 28, 2009
By travelguy
While assembling the bike, I found the handlebar post, the handlebar L-bar, as well as both pedals were missing from the carton. In addition, the battery would not take a full charge although the charger indicated the battery was fully charged. This limited the range of travel by half. I purchased another battery from another vendor and the full advertised range was achieved.
I called customer service to request they send me the missing parts as well as a replacement battery and they said they could not. They said I should return the product but they could not replace it.
An overall unpleasant online buying experience.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Good bike with defective battery, March 8, 2009
By Thao T. Ho
This is a good bike if it has a good bike. Unfortunately, I received a defective battery. It got a full charge after about 20min. while it is supposed to charge for 6-8hrs. I tried to contact with Amazon, the buyer. They told me contact to The manufacture Currie. I sent them an email but they told me have to contact them via phone. Unfortunately, their workinh hour overlap with my school time. So far, I did not contact them via phone. I tried the battery, it ran less than 1 mile then stopped. Hope this review will help.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Pretty impressive, can't beat the price, January 19, 2009
By Rambles (Missouri)
After watching this product for a year, the price got so low I couldn't stop myself. Two hundred and twenty five bucks in December 08 vs four hundred bucks earlier in the year. After buying one as a Christmas present for someone else, I had to buy one for me.

Assembly was pretty easy and much to my surprise both bikes arrived without damage. I recommend reading the manual carefully and taking the time to adjust the shifting mechanism and the brakes. Not covered in the manual is how to true up and straighten the wheels. Google it.

This bike was bought for pleasure and not a commute. Quick runs to the store or just to buzz around and get outside for some air.

Warning - as others have said this bike is has a large frame. I wear a 30" inseam and it is tough to get on and off unless you have very long legs. Straddling the mens version of the bike with both feet on the ground, there is no "wiggle room". The bar is right up there.

The seat is a bit hard and at some point I will replace the seat with something softer. Even thought this is called a mountain bike, you really wouldn't want use it as a mountain bike. It is just too heavy. I don't think the wheels would take much abuse with the amount of weight involved. I would have bought the comfort cruiser version, but the mountain bike version was cheaper at the time and may be built a little more substantial. I seem to remember the weight of the two different versions being about the same.

All in all, the bike is a blast. Cheap entertainment that will get me outside and explore more than I have in the past.

When the SLA battery dies, I may build my own L-ion battery pack to replace it with.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Bad shipping and broken bike, July 28, 2009
By PIF (Stony Brook, NY)
The bicycle came twisted because of its handling during shipping. The paper box was broken (open) and the UPS guy said that it was nothing he could have done better because it's very heavy (80 pounds in a paper box).

The frame was so twisted that I couldn't insert the battery. I untwisted it with the car jack and put the battery in (it was so twisted that even after untwisting, the battery still didn't slide in straight and made no contact with its socket, so I had to untwist more and, now, the battery makes contact with the socket, but I have to use a string to keep the battery from falling sideways).

It was well said by another reviewer: "if Currie can't ship their product in a way that protects their product, how does that not reflect on the product itself? You expect every product that requires shipping to be packaged in a way that protects the product."
and another review: "When I buy an item I expect it to be packed to be able to withstand the rigers of shipping- this was not packaged for shipping at all/ Which is the Maker of the products responsibility".

I charged the battery, switched on and the bike was not functioning. I called the customer service and they asked me to open the back box and unplug a white plug with two wires (brown and blue). Then the bike worked. I wonder what is that plug with two wires for. Anyone can tell me? Will it affect the bike or the battery in the future?

I will call their customer service again tomorrow (it's past 4pm and they are closed now) to ask what to do with the bike rack. It doesn't look like it's something I can change/work on myself and I don't think I should keep it in its current state.

My current review doesn't go over 2 stars because I deduct 2 stars for the dented rack and 1 star for bike not working and extra work to get it started).

I will update my review and increase or decrease the rating based on my experience in using this bike.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  ezippy down the road, March 24, 2009
By Garth Reeves (Nebraska)
This is a fun bike to own. It makes riding around a joy. There are a few things I would have liked to see so here is my list of pros and cons.

Pros:
easy to put together
good power
nice style

Cons:
only one battery
no rear light mounting point
charger

ok let me explane the cons list. the bike can hold two batteries, but only comes with one. It would have been nice to have the option to buy the other battery when I bought the bike, but you can only get another battery from Currie. I ride in the early morning (to work) and if you strap something to the rear rack it will block the typical seat post rear lights that are out there. It would have been nice to have an intergrated charger so you could charge the battery and not have to pack the charger around.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Fantastic Bike!!, September 29, 2009
By SeattleRegan (Seattle, WA)
I purchased this bike eight months ago and have thoroughly enjoyed using it ever since! The bike arrived three days after I placed my order and was extremely easy to put together. All that was required for assembly was to put on the seat, pedals, handle bar, and front wheel. I am not good with tools but even this was a breeze for me. The bike arrived with the electronics and bike brake cabling already hooked up.
Overall this bike is an extremely great value for the money spent. It has become something that I look forward to using everyday, when originally I purchased it just to run short errands and cruise around the neighborhood. I now find myself looking to use my bike in lieu of my car whenever possible. The battery provides great distance and is very easy to charge, making daily use a breeze. I couldn't recommend this bike highly enough! Great buy!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  great bike, June 7, 2009
By Bob (Thunder Bay, Ontario Canada)
I am right at the top of the weight range so I am only getting about ten miles of assist while riding on hilly gravel roads which is enough for me. I bought a second battery so I wouldn't get stuck with no help. Takes the pain out of hills and headwinds. I assembled mine which didn't need much expertise except the front wheel hubs were loose on the bearings. Manual is good so follow directions and recheck their assembly. The only drawback is the weight but when riding it doesn't matter much. I don't normally like a prop stand on my bikes but with the top heavy nature it is handy. At the price I can't complain. I will replace the pedals with ones with toe clips and I don't like the sproingy seat post. I tightened it up but it still moves up and down a bit. The seat is padded enough. A great bike at an unbelievable price. Bob.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Just What I Needed, January 18, 2009
By Phoghat (Elmhurst, NY USA)
I've been eyeing this product on various sites for about 6 months. The price and doubts about the usability held me back. Most places have this same model for more than $400 and I just couldn't justify the expense. When I saw it on Amazon for $299 AND free shipping I couldn't resist any longer. I ordered it on a Friday and it was delivered on the following Tuesday. Assembly couldn't have been simpler (and I'm not quite Joe the mechanic).
The only problem was I couldn't figure out the front v-brake until a friend pointed out a spring that I had not noticed had become disengaged. Now it's fine. I was also missing the quick release for the seat post and 1 call got me that by parcel post in another 3 days.
As far as riding goes, it's just great. The Pas/Tag system works well, the range is OK for my needs and I'm ordering an extra battery so my range will be extended. BTW, if you're going to add that extra battery, buy it on the EZip site. Some other battery sites have generic and the Currie battery. The generics are about $100 and the Currie is $149, however if you buy the battery at Currie's site the stock battery is $129.

It is the end of June, 2009. I still have had no problems with the bike except for 1. While peddling the entire left side peddle and crank arm fell off. I was able to get the crank arm and pedal (in one piece) and had enough juice left to get home (2 miles) without having to pedal. I called Currie, and even though my 6 month guarantee had expired, they sent me the parts I needed to re-attach the crank (some metal washers, nuts and screws).
BTW, this was NOT a fault of the bike as I should have checked for loose fasteners and I did not.

If you are thinking of buying some sort of electric vehicle, just because the price of gasoline has come down from last summer don't think every thing's OK now. I'm not some tree hugging liberal, but I do believe that oil is not a renewable resource and someday there's not going to be enough to go around. So get up off your rump, get a little exercise and maybe there will be some left for your grand kids. Your heart will thank you too.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Most Fun I Have Had In Years, March 10, 2009
By James Coleman (Tennessee USA)
I received this bike for Christmas and it is a blast to ride. I never could ride a bike around my neighborhood because of the hills. Even the kids push their bikes up the hills and now I pass them. Impressive, as I am approaching my 6th decade. It will not climb steep hills with my 175 lb weight. There is one that I have to "Walk" it up but it is easy since you can let the motor pull the bike. I typically get about 6 miles before I notice the battery getting weak. If I lived on "flat" ground I have no doubt that it would go 10+ miles if you pedal a reasonable amount.
Quality appears to be good for a bike of it's price. The only thing that I replaced was the seat which was very uncomfortable.
Buy one if you like fresh air. You won't reget it!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  not my dream electric bike perhaps, but does the job (cheaply), February 25, 2009
By Duncan Henderson (Wilton, CT)
I live in CT and cycle commute 2.5 miles every day over hills to a train station. I had been thinking of getting an ebike for a while but the price and my uncertainty about the feasibility of using an ebike for this commute were offputting. The EZIP has laid my fears to rest - and without spending a fortune.
The bad - and it's not that bad:
1) Compared with my last bicycle, which was a regular Trek, the EZIP is decidely heavy and clunky. Be careful if you start to fall off as it is easy to apply throttle and have a large bike spinning around you at speed.
2) The snow and ice here in the winter mean that I needed to replace the tires that the EZIP was delivered with with studded tires. Getting those onto the back wheel was a major undertaking, due to the position of the motor. (I later found a video on YouTube that explains how to do this, but it's still tricky).
3) The last hill to my home is a steep 150ft climb and I the motor really struggles at the crest, even with me pedalling pretty hard. The battery is ready for a recharge by then, so that is the limit of my commute with this bike.
The good - and this is REALLY good:
1) The last hill doesn't kill me anymore.
The suprising:
1) Advice to the reviewer in NC waiting for the warmer weather - you don't have to. The battery has been performing very well even through a rather cold CT winter. Wet roads don't seem to cause a problem either.

I will be interested to see how long the SLA battery lasts. Some have predicted 200 charges, which would take me to about August. If that's the case, paying $150 then for a new battery doesn't seem unreasonable. I just wish that Curry offered a NiMH upgrade.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  A very heavy bicycle, February 24, 2009
By Lou (Raleigh, NC)
I recently bought one of these bicycles when the price was $300 including shipping. The first box came virtually destroyed, but to their credit, Amazon arranged for the return and shipped a second bike. The second box was damaged, but luckily the bike was not.

Assembly wasn't terribly difficult, although if you're totally inexperienced with tools I would recommend getting help from a friend.

I've ridden the bike a little, and plan to commute to work with it (7 miles) when the weather warms up. In the meantime, my test rides have gone well. It's too early to know what my long-term battery cycle time will be between charges, but I should be able to get my 7 miles. There are several hills in my commute which will shorten my battery life considerably over flat ground riding. One of the reasons is that this bicycle is extremely heavy. I have a Trek mountain bike, and while it is a fairly low-end bike, it is a feather compared to this thing. And that is BEFORE I put the battery in the rack. My advice is that you don't run out of battery power when using this bike.......while you will be able to pedal it to your final destination, it weighs about three times the weight of an ordinary bike of similar price. So be careful not to run out of power.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Awesome Bike for Short Hilly Commutes, January 18, 2009
By Patrick Stuart
Gotta say, you just can't go wrong with this bike for the price. Not one bit. There's nothing out that can come close to this for value. It's so much fun going to work now, and I get a workout without breaking a sweat. If you are doing some heavy pedaling (like when I go home from work, all uphill) remmeber to stretch afterwards. I had some killer cramps in my calfs.

Anyhow...the PROS:
1. Killer deal you can't beat.
2. Pretty easy to install (keep in mind you have to loosen the front brake cable to get the tire in).
3. Battery is easy to charge (you can pull it from off of the bike).
4. Quite customizable. But installing a rear fender is tricky. It's pretty packed back there with the brakes, and the controller. Ride your bike over to a bike shop where you can put it right up to the bike and make sure it will work.

CONS...
1. Distance is kind of short. My commute to work is short, 1.5 miles each way. Going to work it's all downhill so I don't use the battery. Uphill I use the battery all the way, but pedal constantly. After the third day, I can tell the battery is getting weak (not by the battery indicator, but the loss of torque from the motor), and have to pedal harder. So after 4.5 miles of going uphill and pedaling, I have to recharge the battery. Keep in mind, I am at the max weight of 240 lbs. But I was hoping I'd get around 8 miles or so.
2. Packaging is kind of trashed. Not really the fault of Currie, but just expect that your box will be damaged. I read a lot of reviews of this happening. Mine not only had tears and holes in the box, but there was major water damage. Luckly the bike was in perfect shape. Make sure you tell the UPS/FedEx guy to note all the damage on his computer.
3. Weight - The bike is heavy. The battery is pretty heavy. Together they make to be a really heavy bike. Where I live, our bus system has a bike rack on the front of each bus. I wouldn't bother to try putting it on there, because you will look like a fool trying to lift it on the rack, and you don't know how well the rack can handle the weight.
4. Check your local laws on registering electric bikes. Where I live (Hawaii), we have stupid laws in place that prevent me from registering the bike. While mopeds can be registered, my slower, pedal-powered electric bike can't. It's a long stupid story that isn't worth my breath. Anyhow I only want to register it, because cops can take the bike away if it's not.

As you can see with what I've found for the PROs and CONs of this bike, the PROs definitely outweigh the CONs and at the price, you just can't beat it. Get one while you can, because the new models have very few differences and are way more expensive.

Help push electric bike technology. Once you get one, your friends will definitely want to get one. I have a co-worker who bought two, one for himself and one for his girlfriend. Got some other co-workers who are tempted, but haven't pulled the trigger yet.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Save the car for longer trips, December 30, 2008
By John Cain (Mesa, AZ USA)
This is a great bike, especially for the price.

I use it primarily for short trips that I used to take in the car. It saves wear and tear on the car, not to mention gas. It also gets me out into the open air, which I like.

The product description says it goes a minimum of 15 miles with pedaling. I'm not sure what they mean by that, since without out the motor you could do the same. Maybe they mean pedaling to get it going before engaging the motor. The worst mileage I have gotten is seven miles on a very cold day. In hotter weather I could make the same trip without any problem. I also had taken a very short (less than two miles) the previous time, so maybe the battery didn't drain down very far before I recharged it. I'm not sure which caused the lower miles.

I initially had a cheap wireless speedometer but that didn't work out because sometimes when I engaged the motor the speedometer stopped working. I think that it couldn't handle the electric field. I subsequently bought a Sigma BC506 5-Function Wired Bicycle Speedometer and it has been working perfectly.

If you are planning to go more than seven miles on a cold day then I would recommend buying an additional battery.

The assembly went pretty well, although my bike tends to not stay in first gear. That hasn't been an issue because starting pedaling in 2nd gear has been easy. I know I just need to take some time and adjust the cable.

The bike has two modes. The one that I use causes the motor to automatically turn off after a few seconds if you stop pedaling. This is supposed to save gas because it forces you to use the pedals to get going from a stop. So, I just keep the pedals moving so that the motor doesn't turn off.

The other mode is an "always on". The motor is always ready to go but it uses more electricity because you are using the motor to get going from a stop.

I've got 145 miles on it. I cruise at around 12 to 12.5 MPH. It goes faster than that but I didn't want to strain the motor.

The rack is useless for carrying things since it is so skinny and you can't put anything wide on it without getting in the way of putting the battery in and taking it out. That was easily solved by buying a Wald Mesh Front Basket model 933GB. This basket is great because you can undo just the basket and take it into the store with you. I paid $34.99 for mine.

Since I didn't want to worry about the bike getting stolen while I was in a store, I bought the OnGuard Beast 5017 chain lock to lock it up. I bought that lock based on good reviews. I paid $89.00 for it. It's heavy, but I don't mind since I'm riding most times using the motor. I'll give up a little efficiency in miles traveled on a charge to keep the bike from getting stolen.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  cheap transportation, July 30, 2009
By Steve (Makanda, Illinois United States)
Since this bike was on sale, it was an easy choice. It's like getting the bike free since a motor and battery would cost this much. The 15 mile range is optimistic if any hills are involved. It's very heavy, although well packaged, the first one arrived damaged, but replacement was easy enough. The second one arrived without an owner's manual since the box had broken open. They should ship the battery as a separate package. Assembly was a breeze, it took longer to get all the parts out of the box than to put them together.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  ezip bike, January 22, 2009
By jim (new mexico)
If what you are wanting is a bike to use for short trips around town this bike fits the bill perfectly. I am a large person,190 or so pounds, and for me the bike seems to have a range of about 10 miles. I suppose sometime in the future I will purchase the second battery which then would give me a range of roughly 20 miles. GREAT BIKE FOR THE MONEY SPENT.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Xtra battery, January 16, 2009
By Darball (manitowoc, WI USA)
After I received my bike. I wanted to order another battery, but I could not find one. So I had looked everywhere trying to find one, and I did. I went to www.thesuperkids.com then to Ezip Electric Scooters & E-Bikes, and then I went into E-BIKE PARTS. There was a picture of it and it costs $139.95 not including the delivery. I think the bike is huge and heavy, but I love it.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  EZIP BIKE MOSTLY GOOD, January 9, 2009
By James R. Huber (Victoria, Tx)
Received very quickly and with adequate instructions. The battery is not what I expected. It does not hold a charge very long. No instructions on how to utilize all of the features. But it is not hard to figure out. The bike is huge, I am 6'1" and have a hard time getting my leg over it. But once seated it is fine. It is very heavy. But it does very well. I get about 10 miles out of a charge, if I use the pedals about half way, I get about 15. That is good. My longest trip in one day is 5 out and back. I would have prefered the comfort bike, but it was almost twice as much money. Not sure why.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  electric bike that has a motor woo!, November 24, 2010
By W. Stern
i got a dwi and needed transportation the 9 miles to work so i bought this, i would charge it at home, got to work and charge it there and bike back home, battery is quite heavy and adds weight. but i would have hated just biking 18 miles to and from work without a motorized bike, so for me it was worth the $300 i paid for it,

although my front tire for some reason keeps going flat, maybe just a bad tire

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good entry level e-bike, January 30, 2010
By J. Higgason (San Diego, CA USA)
I bought this e-bike on sale at an excellent price.
Cheap chinese construction, on par with department store bikes.
Everything works well - as advertised, no complaints there.
I will need to get some more miles on it to see how things wear and hold up.
On my first time out, three miles into the ride, the rear tire had a blow out.
No punctures, the thin inner tube just popped.
I weigh 240 pounds, so I am at the maximum weight limit of this bike.
The tube was replaced with a heavy duty thick wall tube,
and has held up well since then.

The battery does not have much range, it averages about five miles for me.
Results will vary up or down depending on weight, inclines, and motor usage.

My only real complaint is the packaging. When I unpacked the bike,
it had some minor damage to the rear derallier hanger tab, it was bent inward
not allowing for proper shifting of the gears. I could see how other things
might be damaged due to improper handling of the box. This bike is HEAVY!
The packaging isnt up to the task of preventing this type of damage.
I have some experience working on bikes, so the repair was an easy one.

Another item of note is if one has to fix a flat on the rear tire,
it is a much more complicated procedure than a normal bicycle
due to the way the motor is mounted.
The electric cable leading into the motor is "hardwired" and has no connectors,
so the motor must remain on the bike and it is extremely difficult
to separate the motor from the rear wheel while removing the wheel itself.
Not a job that I would want to do while on the road away from home.
It is possible if one carries the right tools and grows a third hand.
The addition of a motor cable connector by the manufacturer
would solve this problem.
The motor could then be removed while still being attached to the wheel,
and the tire could be patched without all of the extra disassembly noted above.

One last item of note. Nowhere in the owners manual or on Currie's website
do they state disassembly procedures for the rear wheel
in case one needs to repair a flat.
Take it to the shop or be very mechanically inclined if this to be attempted.

In closing, I think that this a good entry level e-bike at a great price point.
(on sale, not at the full price of $500)
I enjoy it very much. Once underway with the motor running,
it's weight isnt much of an issue.
With the addition of a motor cable connector,
rear wheel removal wouldn't be so difficult.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Decent but experiencing some problems, January 29, 2010
By Kin L. Li (State College, PA USA)
Bought this bike back in end of December 2009/Beginning of January of 2010. Shipping was fast and received the product in a decent fashion (no dents or broken box or pieces). Setting it up wasnt too bad, took about half an hour to piece everything together.

Riding it is fun. I usually bike to work on my othe bike and it takes me roughly 15 minutes going up hills and being tired afterwards upon arriving. With the bike, casual biking takes me 7-8 minutes and I have energy for work!

Only reason why I gave it 3 stars was because I've been using the bike for about 2-3 weeks now and its been running fine but now when I ride it with motor assist, theres some "clicking/stuttering" from the motor and then it doesn't work. Let me clarify: When I turn the throttle, I hear and feel the motor whining as I'm sitting on the bike seat, and I see that the motor is spinning the chain attached to it. But the chain is not spinning my rear wheel! Normally it does. Really random. The weird part is, sometimes when I dont move the bike at all and let it rest for a few seconds and turn the throttle, the motor can move the rear wheel again, but if I let go of the throttle while im biking and turn it again, nothing happens. All I hear and feel is the motor/chain spinning but my rear wheel is not moving. Everything was fine until this happened.

So not sure how I totally feel about this product. Its good when it worked, but its a hassle when it doesnt work. Anybody experiencing the same problem I am?

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Not review: a Question! Where do you buy a second battery?, January 16, 2009

Many commenters to the reviews here have asked: where do you get a replacement or second battery?
I have not seen an answer to this.

Does anyone know?

Thanks.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  I am very impressed with this E-bike!, January 9, 2010

Prompt initial delivery by Amazon.com. Easy to assemble with tools SUPPLIED by manufacturer. All I did was clean & wax the components prior to assembly, then added high-temperature grease to the various assembly components & axle bearing (packed grease in edges by finger - best as possible).

The adjustments are very close to being perfect, and very rideable as-is.

I am very impressed with the smoothness and power of this Electric Bicycle! It's a very well made product.

There are two methods to drive this E-bike: (1) pedal assist (kind of a "turbo charge" assist to your manual pedaling - and there are SEVEN gears!), and (2) 100% Electronic Drive. Either way has its advantages: Pedal Assist gives you more top-end speed and greater range (giving the battery a break and probably pulling less load on the 450w DC motor), and 100% E-drive is just amazing.

It's interesting that Currie Technologies took the time to figure out "lock-out" for the front brake... so if you're planning on trying a "burn out" while holding the front brake (left finger pull), then think again, because Currie cleverly disabled the E-drive when the front brake level is pulled (there is an electric line feeding to/from the front brake)... not that I was thinking about doing a burn-out, mind you. ;-)

Cost-effect? Yes Solid bicycle, even usable without its E-drive and/or battery, but 10x the fun WITH the E-drive.

I purchased this bicycle as an experiment to determine if I wanted to convert an automobile to Electronic Drive... If my lasting impression about the possibilities are any where near my first impressions of this simple bicycle, I will do an automobile EV conversion.

Try this bike, you'll like it.

And remember, you can add an additional Battery Power supply (there are two slots - one on either side of the back rack), which operate one-at-a-time, providing more range (they're not wired in series, haha).

I highly recommend this bike, and when purchased from Amazon, I know I've bought with confidence.

In my instance, the original bike shipped with a cracked battery supply. ONE Email to Amazon.com fixed that problem, and within 4 days, I had a replacement sitting at my doorstep.

Very impressive customer support by Amazon. I have never been disappointed by anything I've bought from Amazon. They always stand by their products and make the decision to buy - easy!

Bravo, Amazon!
