5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Lock!, September 10, 2010
By JeffM
I purchased this lock for my daughter to take to college. Her school's campus is notorious as a magnet for bike thieves with lots of bikes stolen each year. She has a cruiser/hybrid style bike with large rims/tires and the frame is a bit larger than typical road bikes. The extra
width and length of this lock easily allows it to go around the rear tire/rim/frame AND the bike rack which completely locks the frame and rear wheel to the rack and in her case doesn't leave a lot of extra room where a jack or pry-bar could fit in and try and break it,,a standard size U-lock may better suit your needs as you don't want a lot of space left over after locking the bike to a rack. She uses just this setup when she's at her classes during the day but at night back at the dorm she adds a second STD U-lock to lock the front tire to the frame(since she has quick release rims) and the next day she just leaves that U-Lock locked to the bike rack until she returns. School's only been in session for 3 weeks now and she said her dorm is posting notices already about missing bikes and to use "Good" U-Locks instead of just cables as they've already had quite a few bikes stolen that were locked with only cables or inferior U-Locks that are easily cut or pried open. Kryptonite U-locks are becoming the lock to have at her campus, they've got a great following. Final note about bike security...we also used a small cable to lock her seat to the frame, i'm sure it'll be easy to cut but may help keep the opportunist thief from quick releasing the seat and taking it.
I know it may be overkill but a couple extra dollars spent now on good security makes us feel better and hopefully makes her bike a less attractive theft next to the dozens of others on the racks that are not as secure.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Just another happy pedestrian., November 4, 2010
By Grrreat
This lock is great if you don't want your bike to go anywhere, with a rock solid and durable exterior. However, if like me, you like to ride your bike, this may not be a good choice. The locking mechanism started sticking after about 6 uses and is now frozen completely. My keys are bent and my bike is stuck on campus until I can figure out how to break the lock or borrow a grinder. All in all, I'd say it's doing a great job at keeping a thief with keys like me out.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Too much hassel, May 10, 2011
By Rebecca Lemons
I got this lock because I just bought a great albeit expensive bike. It took me over 2 hours to get it mounted properly as it's size as well inflexible bracket material that holds it while you ride was a pain to manipulate. The lock works great but it takes a good 15 minutes of finagling to get it off the mount. Then it takes another 15minutes when I'm ready to go because the key has to be jiggled and wiggled around to make sure it is all the way in to unlock and lock it back up. The mount a pain to get the lock on and off. I gave up using it when I bike. The lock does work, but for people who live in a low crime area on the go, I get another different lock.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  good, reliable lock, October 18, 2010
By A. Wu (California)
The Kryptolok fits well around the frame and spokes of my bike. I've had it for more than a month without encountering any problems. As some reviewers have pointed out, using the key can take effort. However, it becomes a lot easier once you get accustomed to it.

I am happy with my purchase of this lock.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Lock broken, but protection guarantee seems to work, October 1, 2010
By G. Russell
The lock was broken and my $900 bike was stolen 2 days after securing it with this lock. The protection guarantee seems to work, though - I'm filing the paperwork and they haven't given me any trouble thus far, so I should get $900 from Kryptonite for the stolen bike.

Lesson? Get a stronger lock if you have a flashy or expensive bike. I hear good things about their New York series.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Sturdy and It works., December 1, 2010
By Gabriel
After having one bike stolen I figured this would be a great lock to go for. I didn't want the cheapest U-Lock I could find so I decided on this one and I am very happy.

Some people said they had trouble with the lock sticking but I just think they were using it wrong. The key just needs to go all the way in before you turn it or it will only turn half of the way it needs to. Very sturdy but also huge, don't plan on mounting this on a small bike. I ride Mirraco BMX so I keep mine in my backpack.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  B+ on lock, F on Mounting Bracket, June 10, 2010
By M. Sibley (CA, USA)
I have had a Kryptonite lock before and liked it a lot, unfortunately, I left my bike at my parents house and they lost the lock. Don't ask me how, I have no idea. I decided to replace it with a similar lock hoping it would fit into the same mounting bracket I had previously. This was not the case. I removed the old one and started to install the "ez-mount" bracket. The name only spurred my anger after 30mins of unsuccessfully trying to install it. You may think I am one of those people that doesn't read the directions and that is why I could not install it, wrong!! I always read every step of directions and am one of those weird people that enjoys putting things together (the exception of this bracket). After an hour of trying to tighten the bracket around my bike with my hands I decided to use the force of screwdriver to force it to tighten. This I do not recommend, I ended up stabbing myself with the screwdriver and having to stop due to my bleeding hand. The next day I tried again, minus the screwdriver, and was eventually able to tighten it, however, it still does not work as well as my old mount. If mounting you lock is important to you, I would look in to another lock. But if you just want a good lock then I think this is a good purchase.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  I worked great until it got defeated, October 13, 2011
By Tekon (CA, USA)
I had the grey Kryptonite for a while. And it worked great, until one night. I came to get my bicycle off from the parking meter and all I found was a twisted "U" part of the U-lock, and the key cylinder laying on the ground... it was so surreal. I just left them there. Later on after getting my composure, I found out that the locking mechanism was broken as well.

This theft was carried away no more than 30ft away from me between 7-10pm.

In conclusion... I think they must've used some sort of leveraging tool. I've seen a guy with a long steel pipe up his sleeve. maybe 4foot long. It seemed as if it was done effortlessly.

Hence I would advise anyone that care about security to not bother with this lock. Since it only locks on one side, if enough force is applied, one side can slip out.

After this incidence, I've done some research and found that: OnGuard has cheaper locks that locks on both sides of the "U" part, and Kryptonite offer that for their Evo(Orange), and NewYork (Yellow) locks. But if you want maximum security and don't mind the weight and hassle (it takes more time to lock & unlock) then go with a chain lock. *Cables are useless.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  solid lock, May 11, 2011
By A. Jones
This lock is nice and solid. I have had no problems with the key sticking, and the key feels solid enough to me. It isn't the strongest lock compared to the Evolution or NY series, but I don't plan on leaving my bike at the bus 'el' station overnight.

The only complaints that I have are: 1) the bracket is a little large, which decreases mounting options and 2) the lock is maybe a little too big for what I need it for. However, if I ever need to lock to a parking meter or something else that thick, I can.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  best lock for the money, October 7, 2010
By Dusty Bob
While watching a popular bike thieves location in tucson AZ I watched a van with two occupants cruise by 3 times in a matter of about half an hr. on the 4th drive by the van stopped, a guy jumps out with bolt cutters in hand and snips the chain on a recently secured bike, the van takes off in one direction, and the thief rides off into the sunset with his booty. thier were several bikes locked up with Kryptonite locks that were simply passed by. I guess bike thieves don't mess around with Kryptonite brand locks.
By the way, the police were also watching this site and caught up with the van driver promptly.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Heavy, solid lock, June 14, 2010
By R. Wong
So far this lock has been great for a suburban environment. I bought a steel cable along with it to make my bike more secure but I'm finding that (at least in Central New Jersey) this U-lock can do the job on its own. My only complaint is that the bike mount it comes with is just un-usable on my bike. It takes so much effort to mount and unmount it that it's not worth it - I just keep it in my backpack and pull it out when I need.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent -, September 4, 2010
By Pragmatist (Phoenix, AZ.)
I got this lock 'second-hand' so to speak - the original Kryptonite bike lock was recalled because of problems with thieves defeating it with a ball-point pen cap (or something similar), and this was the replacement. Have had it for years, never a problem. The longer loop makes it easier to reach secure places a bit further away and harder to get to; I use it just at home, inside a garage that is closed and locked at night. The 'bad news' is that I gave up on trying to carry it with on my bicycle - the holding clip got loose, and it wasn't possible to lock both the frame and the front wheel. So I use a cable and key lock when leaving home.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great lock, but make sure the size is right, September 27, 2011
By Kaela Talley (URBANA, ILLINOIS, US)
In the month or so I've had this lock, it's been mostly smooth sailing. The lock itself I hang underneath my bike seat for transport since there wasn't anywhere on my bike I could attach the holder/harness that comes with it. The lock is secure and I don't hesitate to leave my bike overnight on my campus.

The 5x9 s a little bit small, so make sure it's the right fit for your bike. Some of the bike racks on my campus are a bit thick, and I can't get the lock around the bike frame and through the front wheel and still lock around the rack/pole. If you really don't think anyone will steel your wheels, 5x9 probably won't bother you.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good, Sturdy Lock, September 4, 2011
By Cynthia Couture (DULUTH, GA, US)
First impression about the lock is that it is well built. The U bar fits into the locking mechanism snugly, with no wiggle room a thief could exploit. The 13mm U bar is actually quite large, I don't even think you could get a pair of bolt cutters around the bar, let alone manage to cut it. Compared to other U locks the Kryptolok is one of the larger ones, and should easily allow you to put the frame and a wheel through most bike racks. The mounting mechanism is a little complex, but if you don't mind the trouble it will work. I just throw the lock in my backpack, it's easier in my opinion.

Some people complain about the locking mechanism being fragile and locking up. I would say the mechanism is picky, but not fragile. The entire locking mechanism is housed in the straight half of the lock, and is actually heavier than the U bar. You have to put the key snugly in the lock and turn it, and when the lock sticks I just back it up, set the key again, and it has always opened on the second try. Another nice feature is that Kryptonite will send you a free set of replacement keys if you loose yours and have the serial number from the side of the keys. No one has tried to steal my bike yet, but I feel safe with this lock on my bike. For added security, and because I have quick release wheels, I bought an inexpensive 8 foot cable which I loop through my wheels. The only real downside of this lock is its weight, which is even to much to comfortably wear the lock on a belt, as some people do. But again, the lock is larger than average, and that weight it what gives it strength.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Fort Knox with a big flaw, September 4, 2011
By Editor (California)
This thing is a tank, weighing in at around two pound ten ounces including the mount, and is big enough to secure my bike to trees -- which are only slightly more prevalent in Los Angeles than well-constructed bike racks. I like the way the mount attached to my bike (although, because of the size of this lock, I found mounting locations limited) and how easily it operates (when it operates properly).

In my experience, most of the problems that reviewers here have described about the key sticking probably stem from not inserting the key to the bottom of the shaft before trying to turn it (at least, that is the official word from Kryptolok).

HOWEVER, last week, I had ridden to the store to do a little shopping and found that this behemoth was locked... as in, I was locked OUT. As I had begun to rely heavily on this lock, I had left my cable lock at home. So, the choice was, one, don't shop, but return home for the other lock, or two, shop without securing my bike. Since this was a Trader Joe's in West LA, I did the latter, and thankfully, with no ill repercussions.

When I got home after shopping, I found that this lock was still "locked out". The key would not turn past halfway (and yes, I was being very careful to insert the key fully before attempting to twist it). Finally, in frustration -- and knowing how well this technique has worked in other instances throughout history -- I dropped the lock onto the ground from about three feet up.

Voila! The key turned. I shot in a little WD-40, and the lock has worked well since.

Now, after having read and considered the similar problems reported here by other reviewers, and having experienced a similar situation myself, I have to decide if returning this lock would be the best option... or, do I keep it, hoping that the one incident of failure was a fluke?

What would you do?

*Edit*
I decided to return it.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  A Kryptonite Lock Makes U Feel Safe, August 8, 2011
By kenl3 (Sussex County, NJ)
I don't worry when I hook my bike to a stationary item with my Kryptonite Kryptolok Series 2 ATB Bycicle U-Lock. Maybe if I traveled to "other" neighborhoods I would do as the professional couriers do, but I'm very happy with this lock. I go to the gym or the supermarket, lock the bike, and I'm worry free.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Ideal size, October 3, 2010
By Yamis
This is the ideal size. It's large enough to lock your bike on different places. I really like kryptonite. The key is a little tricky on the beginning, but after using some times it gets easier. The only thing I don't like about this lock is the thing that holds it on the bike while you are biking. It's made of plastic and during very cold days (I still use my bike on the beginning of winter) I though it was too hard to lock it in. This was with a previous experience with my husband's lock (same locker, but not so large). I broke it after some time. So I'm just not going to use it. Other than that, it's totally worth for the price. Really good and cheap!

i bought this item slightly hesitant because it was a key and lock method instead of a combination but it turned out to be a good buy. it has held up so well so far and feels very sturdy and would be extremely difficult to break off

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Fits well around wider poles, August 21, 2010

Overall a nice lock, but the locking mechanism is a little finicky. I chose this model because the inner diameter would fit around the larger pole that I lock my bike to at work.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good deal for a Kryptonite U lock., November 4, 2009
By tribal tracer (Evanston, Illinois)
For a decent, mid range hybrid or touring bike, this is a great price for an excellent, tough U lock from Kryptonite. Plus, If you add a $[...] bike cable, you're well protected in most urban environments. No need to spend more than $40 bucks on a U lock.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Monster of a lock, January 31, 2012
By Larry Lane (Nevada)
I have placed this in two seperate places on my Crusier style bike and it works great. Had to move it once due to another addition to the bike. The only problem I noticed was the lock swaying back and forth and with a little ingenuity on my part I put an old doggie collar with clasps that lock around the the bike frame and around the lock and it kept it from swaying and easy to take off when taking the lock off. I might put a pic on-line sometime to show that if anyone is interested.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good... but wide..., January 5, 2012
By Alex
The bike lock works perfectly and has kept my bike secure on a college campus for an entire semester now.

However that being said the lock is wider than I thought it would be. for those that carry backpacks... the smaller outside pocket on backpacks...this lock barely fits in the width of one of those pockets. Every once in a while it's nice to have the width if you want to lock your bike to a light post or something... but if I could go back I would probably buy the thinner dimensioned model.

And make no mistake this lock is not lite. But you trade weight for safety. The weight isnt by any means unbearable... but of course if it could be lighter that'd always be nice.

Last thing is that the carry strap that comes with this thing (to attach/carry the lock on the frame of your bike) doesnt fit my bike. I have a Giant mountain bike and the strap that secures the locking mechanism doesn't fit around the top bar of the frame. And in the other two configurations this lock is too wide and does not fit inside the frame.

Good lock, could be improved on

4.0 out of 5 stars.  So far So good, October 27, 2011
By Krzysztof Cyganik (New York)
After my 10 years old lock finally gave up on me, I wanted to stick with Kryptonite. This company is known for making secure locks ranging from low $20s to even $100s depending on the desired security. When I chose my first lock long time ago, it was in similar price range and compared to this one I conclude that:

1) Mounting System for the first one was simpler (even though I didn't use it and eventually lost it). - With this one I found a way to mount it, and make it look cool.

2) Old lock had double locking (on both ends of U); whereas this one locks only on one side, the second side is bent, and that's how it stays in place

3) The key in the new lock looks fancier (don't know if it means better)

4) This lock has adequate size

So far upon returning to my bike I always found it where I left it, so there is no reason why I shouldn't like it. Of course, more expensive locks are likely to give more protection but for my bike with little monetary value and lots of sentimental value it should be good enough. Finally, let me just mention that I use it to lock the frame only. I use another gadget to lock both wheels.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Secure and practical, October 10, 2011
By amazonista
I use it everyday, I trust it and secure my precious bike with it. There has been no problem so far, sometimes it looks like stuck but it's just when I don't put the key all the way to the bottom. It arrived in good packaging and earlier than expected.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Disappointed, March 27, 2012
By Robert Traub (NY, NY)
Got a good deal on an On Guard lock a few years ago. The wife uses her bike to commute to work in New York City, and her beat-up bike gets beat up on the street and when it is locked up outside. She never had a problem but she never liked that lock, either. I thought the Kryptonite would be a step up in quality, but that is not the case. We were ready to return it, then she felt it was not worth the trouble. One really good thing is they provide multiple keys. A lock is great so long as you have the key. The family bike owner has lost a key or two in the past, so extra keys are a blessing. Still, this lock, which is in a midrange price, is just OK. I did not feel it warranted to spend the extra $$$ for Kryptonite's high-end lock, considering it was probably worth more than the bike itself.
