All Metal Basket, All metal Mount, February 27, 2009
By Thomas E. Tweedel (Austin, TX United States)
|
|
After getting a new "comfort" bike (the type you sit upright on, Novara Mia) for my wife we wanted to outfit it with a basket. We got the Topeak and while it was a great basket it had a lousy plastic mount that made it almost worthless. So I started shopping around for something with an all metal mount. Since the bike has front shocks attaching anything to the fork was not an option.
We tried the Wald 3133 for several reasons.
First it is an all metal assembly. You can torque it down without fear of breaking anything.
Second it has a quick release mount. That was important.
Third it had a bracing component and that component indexed off the upper handle bars vs the center tube. When you turned there was no rubbing on the frame.
I was a little unclear how it mounted to the bike and even more unclear about how the basket attached to the mount. Here is how it works.
The mount attaches to the bike at three points. Two points on the handle bars. You get metal clips and rubber pads that fasten around the tube of your handlebar. There is a slot/tab on the back that holds one side and a screw on the other. Getting it evenly spaced is the hardest part of assembly.
The mount has two wire tubes that make up the bulk of it. There is a metal wire strut that attaches to those two tubes that forms the support piece. This strut can slide up or down on the mount to account for different sizes of bikes and positions. However one way or another your probably going to end up with a slight tilt to your bracket. Under load the force is transferred through the strut to the handlebar.
So now that you've got it mounted my next question was how does the basket attach to the mount? It turned out to be very easy and simple. At the bottom of the mount are two hooks that clearly attach to the wire of the basket. At the top there is a metal loop (kind of like a compressed screw eye). If you look carefully at the handle on the bracket there is an extension on one side of the handle. To attach the basket to the mount you hook it up on the bottom and then with the handle upright you slide the extension into the loop and then turn the handle down. This rotates the extension down locking the basket to the loop and on the frame. Simple, efficient and all metal.
The carrying capacity of the basket seems pretty good. We made a run to the grocery store and got 3 quarts of milk/juice and a few other things. It held them without problem.
Being simple and all metal it can (and has) taken some abuse. Since hooking it up to my bike its taken a few falls while parked, of course the front tire ALWAYS rotates so that the basket takes the direct hit. The basket is a bit bent up but still 100% functional, the mount is fine. I don't think I would have said the same for one of those plastic mounted baskets.
UPDATE 9-12-10
years of service and its still going strong. Have one on my bike and one on my wifes. The only thing I have to add is that if you are going over rough terrain or hit a really nasty pothole the shock can cause handle to bounce up high enough to detach. I've had it come loose a few times, the bottom hooks have always held long enough for me to stop and fix it but it something to be aware of. The solution is as simple as a twist tie, rubber band or clip to keep the handle from flying up.

Sturdy and practical, December 6, 2007
By Kristyn (Boston, MA)

I bought this basket to go on the front of my mountain bike, which I also use to go grocery shopping and for other various errands. It fits comfortably on the front of my bike, and comes off easily for shopping and when I go riding on back trails (the basket stand is minimal and doesn't impede rough riding). I did have to remove my front reflector because the basket stand takes the space, but that was easily placed higher up on one of my handle bars.
I'm not sure why some reviewers say their baskets fall off--the handle of the basket locks it into place when down, and there are 2 hooks on the bottom of the basket holding it in place. The only way that basket is coming off is if the handle is up and the basket is lifted off the hooks. The only suggestion I have is to wrap the handle with some cloth or something--it's thin and can hurt your hands when full of heavy groceries/items. Other than that, it's a great little basket! If it works on my cheapo mountain bike, it should work on anything.

Awesome bike basket!, September 18, 2007
By Book Maven

What a great basket! I recently decided to make cycling my main mode of transportation, so I needed something that would hold a bunch of stuff (lunch, my oversized purse, a hoodie), and this fits it all. Also, I like that I can take it off to go shopping. It's very sturdy, and easy to decorate (gold spray paint, a reflector and fake geraniums spruce mine up)! Ride on!

Must install correctly, August 18, 2008
By Peripatetic nephoselenoastrophile (Spokane, wa)
|
|
This product must be installed correctly to operate correctly(Obvious, huh?). I originally didn't study the examples given and just installed it to however it seemed to work and I had the same complaint as the negative reviewer: The bottom bar that pushes against the headstem would just fall off(I positioned such that it was tilted downwards) causing the basket to smash right into the front tire! After I looked at the pictures(Like the one at the top of this page), it became apparent the bottom bar is suppose to tilt upwards where the headstem meets with the handlebar and after reconfiguring it, it has never fallen off and is pretty sturdy. It's also VERY convenient for trash(And other more endearing objects), like when you're going through the late-night drivethrough(It's happened before!). Also, my handlebars are much thicker than the bicycle's handlebars in the picture so the supplied handlebar mounts and screws didn't really work and it would've taken a thinner and much longer screw to mount it: instead, I just used solid core wire laying around and wrapped it really tight. The mounts are still not completely "grasping" the bar, but it's solid enough to work. I have a 2008 Diamondback Response moutain bike so maybe it's not meant for newer mountain bikes in general? Or Diamondbacks specifically? Or, specifically, responses?
Another note of caution is that the basket's handle is supposed to be in the pointing-up position when placing it on the rack, push in firmly and it should pop in, and then lay the handle to the side and it secures the top part of the basket. It appears like it should be pretty obvious, but I can understand how something like that can be missed since ... well... I don't remember it being in the instructions.

Flimsy, September 9, 2008
By chaitealady

This basket was difficult to attach to my bike and I could not get it to stop falling on the wheel. In addition, it was incredibly difficult for me to pull the basket out of the carrier to take with me. I opted to go to my local bike store and purchase a different wire-mesh basket that I am far happier with. It slides into a carriage and has large red buttons so that I can adjust the angle it sits at and release it from the carriage. All in all, I would not recommend the Wald Front basket.

great bike basket if you plan to leave it on the bike, September 2, 2009
By SovereignJack (Redondo Beach, CA)
|
|
This basket is made in America. (Its always nice to see we still make some stuff here). Build quality is pretty good, not great. I noticed there were a couple spots on the basket that slipped through quality control. A bad weld in front, leaving a sharp spot on the end of one of the spokes where it wraps around. A little sanding with a metal file fixed this. And there is another spoke that is slightly bent and welded at an angle, simply cosmetic. Both minor problems, but I noticed them right away, so you would think that someone packing this would have seen this right away as well. So much for American workmanship.
Putting it on the bike took all of 5 minutes. Very straightforward, all you need is a philips screwdriver and a set of pliers or adjustable wrench to hold the lock nuts while tightening.
The basket is a little smaller than the typical grocery store basket, but I wouldn't suggest taking it off the bike to use in the store as it has a single handle which mounts in the middle. So you'll have a balancing act to perform if carrying by the handle as any heavy object on one side will tip the basket. Also, the holes are rather large in the basket, so it should be used to carry things that are already in bags, small items could easily fall through. I never planned on removing it from the bike so this isn't a problem for me. I suggest putting a small luggage lock on the basket to keep it from being stolen when unattended (clipping the handle in the downward position prevents the basket from being removed).
My main purpose for this basket was to be able to make quick trips to the local grocery store, video store, etc. leaving the basket on the bike, and for that it is perfect. A two handle basket design with mesh screen would be better for anyone wishing to use this basket off the bike to carry stuff. Just my 2 cents.

Not for handlebars with wide diameters - or GMC Denali Road Bike, September 30, 2010
By Joey C (Los Angeles, CA)
|
|
The build quality is pretty solid - HOWEVER. If your handlebars are wider than average, it's not going to mount. This will not mount to a GMC Denali Road Bike. It mounts where the knuckles are which is almost an inch wide. The included hardware won't do it. But for cruisers and most bikes with 5/8 of an inch, it's a very nice looking basket.

Great Value, September 2, 2007
By ananda01

I love this basket! I "installed" it in about 10 seconds since it just clips on so easily, and I didn't need to remove any bike parts or use any tools. However, since it isn't locked on in any way, it is just resting on the bike, I'm worried it will be stolen, so I used zip ties to fasten it on, and I do not use the lift off feature. The basket is a very useful size that fits a backpack easily.

Unusable - falls off at the slightest touch, August 28, 2007
By A. Schneider (Los Angeles, CA United States)

This basket is a poor design for bicycles. Both the mount and the basket have problems, and bottom line, the basket will not stay on unless you go to extraordinary lengths to create a custom mount for yourself.
Save yourself the trouble and go to the local bike shop like I did to get a basket that'll stay on.
BTW, I don't know what the other reviewers are looking at, but after actually handling this basket, I would seriously question the authenticity of these online reviews.

White Wald Front bicycle basket., October 28, 2010
By DadsDish dot com (Colorado)
|
|
I did a month of shopping for front bicycle baskets for my Schwinn beach cruiser.
Here's what I love about this basket..
1.) It mounts on your handlebars around the gooseneck, which keeps it suspended away from the frame. Other baskets lay against the frame and scratch or rub the finish off of your bike.
2.) The setup of this removable basket is quite ingenious, detatches in a blink of an eye, but remains safely attached until you remove it.
3.) If you choose not to use the basket, the mount is not unsightly at all.
4.) The basket sits high enough which allows you to mount a headlight on the fender with plenty of room to spare.
The name plate on the font of the basket also has a nice retro look to it. All in all.. a great product. I really can't find anything wrong with it. I highly recommend it to anyone who needs a nice detatchable basket.

Great little item for our Mountain Bike, September 5, 2010
By Credit Guru (Las Vegas, NV)

Amazing little unit, fit perfect on my mountain bike!
I would suggest adding a small clamp to keep the handle down to prevent the basket from falling off on rough terrain. We used a twisty-tie from a loaf of bread :)
Instructions were OK, just OK. Typical of most import items, so I was surprised to see instructions like that coming from a USA product.
Took all of 15 mins to install and required a screwdriver and a wrench.
Nice Job Wald!!!

Nice basket, easy to mount, sturdy, August 12, 2010
By Francine (New York, NY)
|
|
I like the look of this basket and had no trouble mounting it on my bike.
I especially like that it's not too wide but is nice and deep. (Note that I have an extra-long head tube on the front of my bike, so the basket sits far above the wheel.)
The basket is very easy to lift off and return to its bracket.
I like the black color very much -- it matches my bike and looks very smart.
I do find my bike a little awkward to maneuver when I fill the basket with bags of groceries. You definitely do not want to place very heavy items in the basket because it will set off the balance of the bike.
Finally, the price is very reasonable for what you get.

Just what I was looking for...., March 24, 2010
By Rose (Small Town, California)
|
|
This is my first review of an Amazon purchased product. I would first like to thank the people who reviewed it before me, those reviews really helped.
I spent about a month looking for the ideal basket. It amazed how expensive they can be and, in the case of some, how impractical. I looked at several websites, bike stores, and a couple of big box stores. After reading the reviews here I decided upon this one and am very thankful.
I highly recommend it if you are looking for a basket that can be used as a grocery basket or fit a grocery bag in it, can fit a lap-top in it, or a backpack, is more rain-safe then most, is easily removable, and sits beneath the handle bars so as not to get in the way of lights, reflectors, hand-breaks, etc. This basket's price here was far more reasonable then many less practical baskets. I was also happy that it came with all the attachment pieces and good directions to attach it. Plus, it does look really cute. I commute to work on my bike daily and it has held up very well.
The minuses I saw in several reviews should be discussed. For one reviewer there wasn't a very comfortable handle to carry the basket when it got full and heavy, that reviewers advice was to tie some cloth around it. Another reviewer said it bounced when he rode it making a bit of racket. I had one occasion of this when I hit a giant pot-hole but, other then that it has been quiet and stable in my experience with it.
So, if you are looking for a moderate size, removable basket, at a good price, this might be just what you are looking for....

The way stuff used to be made, March 14, 2011
By anna
|
|
Before it all came from China. This is made in Maysville Kentucky and it shows. If the thing is rubbing on the wheel, you didn't put it on right, have a very small bike or have your handlebars set very low. After I put it on, Anna, who is my wife, had a big grin on her face. The perfect solution for a few groceries on the way home from the gym. Or hauling a couple of things on an evening cruise.
Engineering? I laughed, it is great! Simple? You bet, it is a bike basket. I think it is very sturdy. The lock down mechanism is ingenious. I am totally impressed. So is Anna.
Also, nice to see something still manufactured in the US.

Nice Basket, But Hardware & Install Terrible, February 26, 2011
By ArizonaPilot (Arizona)
|
|
This is a high quality basket, but the installation hardware is very cheap and the instructions sparse. The biggest problem is that the bolts do not quite line up with the integral threads in the frame, which makes it very easy to cross thread the bolt and ruin it. This could have been solved by using a separate nut, but I guess they chose to save a couple of bucks and thread the frame directly.

Great little basket, handle can hurt, December 19, 2010
By Sarah (Washington, DC)
|
|
I love this basket - lightweight, easy to install, and works like a charm. However, the handle is pretty tough to carry for long - when I go to the store or market, I never want to actually hold it in my hand once I've put something in it, because all of the weight bears down on this tiny wire handle. Would recommend this same basket, but with ideally some kind of softer grip on the handle.

I bought this basket after a trip to Scandinavia. Everyone there had bikes with baskets and I used one on a tour of Helsinki. Great basket, August 11, 2010

I am a college student and ordered this bike basket because I needed something that could help me get groceries back to campus. I have been very pleased with the product -- it is very large and sturdy, and yet you can pop it off and take it straight into the store with you in no time flat. I gave minus 1 star only because it rattles a bit when you're biking around on a bumpy road or sidewalk, but otherwise I have been 100% pleased with it! Very well made!

wald 3133 bike basket, August 6, 2010

This is a great basket. I was able to install it within about ten minutes with just a phillips head screwdriver.
I have a biria easy step bike and it fit my bike perfectly, and looks great. As far as lifting it off and puting it back on the bracket it seems to work pretty well although I can't see me talking it off except maybe when the bike is on car carrier.
The fit is tight without any rattle when I ride. Basket is big enough for a milk jug and maybe a few smaller items, so I don't think it's practical for much more than the bread and milk run to the store, but hey anything more and I would use the car.

Love it!, July 2, 2010
By G. Even
|
|
I love this basket. It's easily mounted, easily removed, and when not on the bike, the carrier doesn't protrude obstructively. It rests securely on two hooks which attach to the lower side of the basket and the handle forms a 'twist lock' with an eyelet in the mounting bracket. I would suggest there be a snap catch or something on the handle to keep it from accidentally lifting and rotating, causing the basket to become unattached from the mounting bracket, but this has never happened to me either. I take the precaution of using a small spring clip or carbinner clip to hold the handle down against he basket when mounted just in case.
The basket is sturdy and strong and works great to remove and take with you in the store or where ever. Highly recommended.

Whoever said the basket is hard to balance while shopping isn't that smart. This basket is cool, a little expensive but it is made in the USA. I think it looks sweet on my bike. One time I came around the corner and some old man was checking out my bike and started telling me about the new style baskets he had seen, the ones that pop out, so I demonstrated for him, he thought it was a very nice looking basket.

great basket but too hard to install, March 30, 2010

I was so excited to receive this basket from Amazon--I'd been waiting with baited breath. However, one of the included screws quickly stripped during installation. Next came a trip to the hardware store and a frustrating hour or so trying to get the angle of the handlebar brackets right--driving the screw was next to impossible until this was accomplished. All in all, I'm glad I finally have my basket, but it was way too hard to install. Had I known it was going to be so frustrating, I probably would have passed on this product altogether.

Wald Basket, June 14, 2009
By Clinton C. Wigen
|
|
I received this basket on time, actually a day early! I bought this heavy duty large Wald basket after both watching a video on the installation of same and based on the positive reveiws on Amazon.com.... Couldn't be more pleased with either the basket or the seller.
Mounted with only a little difficulty, i.e. sorting out where/how to route the cables so nothing binds or crimps up, and it is a nice addition to my eZip Men's Mountain bike. Next up is a "cruiser-style" saddle, since I am an old disabled guy (60) and I need the boost from the motor on occassion. Plan to use this for quick gaunts to my local store and pharmacy, and the Wald basket is an excellent addition to the whole system.
Highly recommeded, well made, sturdy, and realatively easy to get the base mounted. Shouldn't be a problem in that area for anyone with even a modicum of screwdriver skill!
Clint.

it's ok, but...i like the 133 better, May 25, 2011
By Charlie (Detroit, MI)
|
|
I had the 133 on my other bike that I left in Florida. So after getting a new bike at home I had to get a new basket. I initially got one I didn't like (the mesh style one with the big plastic mount). After using that one for awhile & not liking it, I decided to go back to the wire basket. The guy at the bike shop sold me on this one vs the 133 which has a hook-on type of handlebar mount. He convinced me this one would be better because it wouldn't rub against the handlebar stem. And of course I didn't want to ruin the fancy paint job on my new Electra Townie Art, so I got it. The problem is that since it doesn't have the part to balance it against the stem, it bends down on the mount easily if you put much weight in it. And it didn't leave me much room to put my headlight on my handlebars. So after a year of using the 3133 bolt on model, I am switching back to the 133. The basket is the same, it's just the mount that's different. For my purposes, I want it to sit in a specific way to hold my items, and the 3133 won't do that because of the weigh down factor. The basket itself is great, it's just the mount on this style that is not very good.

Try a different basket, May 24, 2011
By S. Simpson (NYC, USA)
|
|
I read the reviews before ordering this basket and have had it for a few months. I would not recommend this item. First of all the installation instructions are not helpful...I relied on a review written by someone on here to help and half way through realized parts were missing (amazon requires you to return the item and request a replacement rather than sending the missing parts). Second of all, the basket does not stay attached- I bought a lock to keep it attached to my handlebars and this helped but it still bounces much of the time and makes quite a racket. Because it flips off I also purchased nuts to attach to the back of the screw to try and keep it locked in, but that did not relieve the problem. I have taken it off once when going for a long bike ride that did not involve shopping and reattaching it was quite an ordeal. I will stick with it for a bit longer, but am keeping my eyes open for a basket that will stay attached when I want it there and that is easily removed when I don't.

Wald Front Bike Basket, May 23, 2011
By DJ (MD, USA)
|
|
I chose this basket over others because of the price, size and it can be removed when not needed. It mounted w/o a problem and comes off easily. When it is on the bike it stays secure. I have used it a few time with light objects and need to test it with something heavy like groceries. It should hold a bag of groceries w/o a hitch. I also bought a rear rack for groceries. Gas is $4 a gallon aroung here and my truck gets about 12 mpg around town. So I decided to fixup the bike to be a grocery getter. Will be using it this week and see how she handles.

Wald wire bike basket, May 11, 2011
By T, Frick
|
|
OH MY Gosh!...Absolutely love it! First of all, it shipped very fast. I am so impressed with the quality of the basket, and I found it to be easily installed. It is large enough to carry a few groceries, school books, or even a small pet. Best of all, it is easily removed from the bike and I can carry it anywhere by its handles. The price wasn't too steep, and I find, with the quality, it is well worth it. I am Very happy with this product!

Tool-free installation?, April 18, 2011
By windracer (Seminole, FL USA)
|
|
The model I received had no installation hardware (no bolts/screws) or tools required. The mount simply slid over the handlebars and then the basket attached easily to the mount. It was almost too simple! I had to do a bit of finagling to figure out how best to re-route the brake/shifter cables on my wife's comfort cruiser, but that didn't take long. My only worry is the lack of the mount locking down to the handlebars. Since they just slide (snugly) over the bars, it seems possible that a bad bump could jar them loose. Upon further research, it would appear the model I received was 133, not 3133 (bolt-on). I guess maybe I should consider returning it for the bolt-on version.
Updated 04/29/2011: I contacted the seller and confirmed that I was sent the wrong model. They quickly took care of the problem and sent me the right one (3133). The bolt-on version works great and now I don't have to worry about the mount popping off the handlebars. Installation was quick and easy (4 screws).

Very Nice, March 26, 2011
By Gina (Michigan)

I just finished installing this basket on my daughter's bike. She will be working on an island where biking is the only way around, well, horses also, but her means is by bike. After working on the island last summer, she knew she wanted a basket to bring home groceries and such. I read review after reviews on this basket and decided it would be perfect. I believe it will be. She tested it by putting a gallon of milk in it, and there was plenty room left over for other groceries. Installation was a breeze. Very very easy to to do, and it looks really cute on her bike. :) Love that she can take it off to carry into the store for her shopping basket. And it sits perfectly on her bike with great support!

Has Saved My Life On More Occasions Than One!, February 28, 2011
By Chelsea
|
|
I recently moved to California for school, forcing me to leave my car back home. My only method of transportation has been my mountain bike, which when I first bought it, didn't see this as being much of a problem, until I attempted bringing a gallon of milk home by putting it in my backpack. Needless to say, I needed to find a new way to carry groceries and books back and forth to school. This basket has come in handy so many times, and is easily removable so I can just bring it in the grocery store with me instead of using a cart or basket provided by the store. I highly recommend this basket. It's perfect for every trip!

Wald 3133QR Bike Basket, February 3, 2011
By Big John (Cheyenne, WY)
|
|
A smart design, well made, and easy to install. Powder coated steel basket fit my mountain bike like a glove. It works without the legs so common on other baskets. NIce feature allows removal when you want to ride your bike without it attached. It's adjustable and clears all of the cables. Doesn't say in the product description but it's made for 7/8 inch handlebars and most likely won't fit larger ones. I'm happy with it and would buy it again.

very useful, November 11, 2008
By B. Rocha (Sacramento CA)

Other people stated that this basket was too woobly and not sturdy enough. You have to attach the U shaped bar support or the basket is not sturdy enough. Otherwise, it is perfect. I carry my big Mom purse, water bottle and an extra pair of shoes in it. One tip is to wrap a bungy cord on top of the basket once you have filled it. I learned this the hard way. My shoes flew out when I went over a curb. OH, and I saw this same basket at a bike shop for $30 plus tax.. I bought it here for $16. including shipping.

By notmynickname76 (Greenbelt, MD)

This is a wonderful little bike basket. I don't understand the reviewer who says it "falls off at the slightest touch"--I'm pretty sure they must have installed it incorrectly.
I'm very happy with it, and use it on my Cannondale hybrid bike to go to my local grocery. I was worried that it might not fit my bike, but (much to my relief) it wasn't a problem at all. The best part is that when I'm done with my errands and want to go out for a ride, I can take the basket off and the bike is back to its original look. Highly recommended.

It's an OK basket, October 20, 2011
By Carol
|
|
The construction is durable, but the design is only So So. It is held on by only two screws. Also, the rectangular piece that is meant to keep it up and away from the tire is too short. So the weight of the item/s placed in it will often push the basket down very close to, or onto the tire. I have to pull it up into position regularly, even with the screws tightened to the max. Doing so then shifts the rubber pads out of position. I would probably look for a different style or make of basket next time.

White in picture, black in order, July 22, 2011
By cruisergirl
|
|
Be careful when ordering, the picture of this basket is white but the only available option is black. Other items on Amazon with multiple options and a picture usually show the color ordered in the picture (such as the Wald 3114 Compact basket). I ordered this basket for my Pacific Shorewood Women's Cruiser Bike, but I wanted it in white. The basket appears to be a good quality, it's just the wrong color. Misleading on the part of Amazon. 4 stars for the product, 1 star for Amazon.

Well constructed, June 27, 2011
By Edward Johnston
|
|
Installation is a breeze. The unit is very sturdy and well suited to carry my fruits and veggies from the - mostly organic - food store. When I don't need to carry anything I leave the basket at home because it's a little heavy, as would be expected from its rigid steel components. I supposse it could lighter if it were made of carbon fiber or titanium but then it would probably be prohibitively expensive. It serves its purpose well and if you need a front basket for your bike, this one is an excellent choice.

I had this basket installed for me at a bike shop so I can't comment on people's difficulty with the installation, but I definitely have not experienced the same thing as the people who are saying that the basket is flimsy and falls off the bike. I commute to work by bike and I put all of my stuff in this basket, which can actually be pretty heavy- water bottle, coffee, lunch, purse, etc. and it never falls off. It hooks on and off easily and was just overall a great investment.

Just the right size, June 1, 2011
By PWC (South Florida)
|
|
It was a little smaller than anticipated, I went to find it in a store to verify it was the size I wanted. After installing it I realized I would have hated a bigger or smaller basket. It was hard a few times to put on but I got the hang of it after a day or so.If you can't master putting this basket on I question how well you can ride a bike in traffic.
It does rattle and if you're not careful and hit a bump hard whatever you have WILL fly out. Either get a net or a zipped bag to put in it.
The only thing I have to get used to is having to push weight instead of pulling it as I did with my backpack. Also make sure to balance the weight in the basket or you'll be having a fun time trying to compensate.

A Great Basket, May 1, 2011
By tuna ketchup (pittsburgh pa)
|
|
After purchasing a rear bike rack (Ventura) from Amazon that had to be returned due to not having all the necessary hardware, I was exploring all the different cargo possibilities for my bike. Some bike bloggers speak highly of Wald baskets so I searched for them. I didn't want a permanent basket on my bike and this basket seemed nicer than the similar removable mesh one so I took a chance, sight unseen. And this basket is great! It keeps all the weight centered so you're not off-balance, and the basket is bigger than it looks online, it can hold a LOT of stuff. (Today, in fact, I just bought a half-gallon of milk, a large plastic pitcher, seven bags of discounted Easter candy, a loaf of bread, and a large canister of instant iced tea... and I probably could have fit a few more things in there!) When the basket is removed, the mount doesn't interfere with the looks or functioning of the bike at all, although I sort of wish it came in silver/chrome. But that is a minor detail. I use it 2-3 times a week to get groceries or bring home take-out. You'll also want to get a bungee net for use with this basket because otherwise stuff might fall out of the top if you hit a bump. The only time I've had a problem is when I tried to carry a twelve-pack of pop (among other things), and on the ride home the metal prongs on the bottom made a creaking noise and sort of bent downwards. But it didn't break off and when I got home I could re-bend it back to normal with my hands, and I'm a not-incredibly-strong girl. As for the instructions, I didn't have a problem interpreting them and I installed this by myself with just a Phillips screwdriver. I still have need for a rear rack and will likely check out Wald's rear rack as well. This would be a great item for anyone planning to do any kind of shopping on their bike.

Flexible and sturdy basket, October 11, 2009
By Tricia G. (Philly)
|
|
I'm very happy with this basket. Once you get it attached to your bike it snaps in and out very easily and fits a full backpack full of groceries. The directions for mounting it are a bit hard to understand but with a bit of patience I got it mounted nice and tightly. The mounting should be tight. If it's loose you've done it wrong. Also, the basket hooks through the loop in the middle and locks in place tightly so if it's not then you haven't done it properly. Now, I can pop it in when I need it to go to the store and also leave it off the bike if I'm going for a longer ride. It's actually light enough to leave on all the time but since it's not permanently locked to the bike I wouldn't want someone to swipe it. I would recommend it.

I love this basket, it is stylish easy to install and it never moves around while I am riding, very secure. My kids and I bike to the library so it is nice to be able to remove this basket (very very easy) and put it back on. I love the old fashion style with the sleek black color. Perfect size I can fit tons of stuff, lunches, books, water bottles, and a bike lock. Not too big not too small.

Great price on amazon. Was relatively easy to install (by following instructions accompanying the prodcut) on my cheapie Huffy MTB. It takes a little getting used to, especially the clipping in and out part, but otherwise, it sits well and snug on the handlebar.
I have used it only a couple of times, so I cannot comment on longevity, durability etc.
It would be nice to have some padding on the basket handles (I rigged one up anyways with some tape)

Excellent!, January 12, 2009
By njb (St. Simons Island, GA)

This is a great basket for the price! The inexpensive baskets we've purchased in the past had a mounting bracket which rested on the head tube and every turn of the handlebars would rub the paint off of my husband's expensive bike! The bracket for this basket mounts sturdily on the handlebars and rests solely on the stem where there is little friction. The release is simple (you lift the handle of the basket which releases the locking mechanism). I was disappointed that it wasn't available in silver, but a little paint resolved that.

Love this basket, March 25, 2008
By biker nyc (NY, NY)

I researched this bike basket here on Amazon and I want to thank the people who gave this basket 5 stars. It's great. My husband attached it to the bike so I can't comment on that but he did it quickly, without any cursing so it couldn't have been too hard (he is pretty good at this stuff tho).
It's easy to put the basket on and take it off and it is stable and solid on my mountain bike. It's really elegant the way it attaches. I throw my giant chain and lock in the basket instead of having it precariously on the rack in back or wrapped around my waist (ugh). And I can actually shop and carry stuff safely. Love it!

All things considered - 5 stars deserved!, August 17, 2011
By Krzysztof Cyganik (New York)
|
|
I needed a sturdy basket for my "mountain-turned-into-urban" bike, which I use to commute 16 miles/day to and from work in pothole rich New York City. Below are some Cons and Pros:
PROS:
- Affordable
- Light
- Very good quality materials
- Ideal size for my needs (& ideal for groceries shopping or even transporting a small dog)
- Very easy to install
- Very quick mounting/dismounting from the bike
- Will fit most bikes
CONS:
- Screws that keep the "fixed hooks" will get loose occasionally and will need to be tightened - happened to me after I took my dog for a ride around the mountain lake.
- I recommend using a rubber strap on top of the basket to keep your things inside on a bumpy road. Too bad I learned it after an incident.
All things considered - this product still deserves the highest rating.

Easy installation, Easy to use, January 8, 2012
By NONOBADKITTY! (Los Angeles, CA)
|
|
I was looking for a removable basket for my bike, to use on those days when I wanted to ride to the store to pick up just a couple things or to get lunch, but didn't want to waste gas taking the car. This one fits the bill perfectly AND it comes in white to match my bike (not sure Amazon sells it in white but it is manufactured in white.)
Installation was very easy, components are sturdy metal (no plastic,) locking mechanism works securely, and it's pretty adjustable and would fit most bikes with a flat area about 4" wide near the center of the handlebars (I have handlebars that kind of curve up, but because this mounts in the middle, where it's flat, it worked great.)
The only complaints I have with it are it IS a bit heavy (but that's because it's made of good quality metal parts and sturdy "wire") and that it rattles around a bit when you hit a bump. I haven't tried it with anything heavy either, so I don't know if it would affect steering in that case, but for my quick sandwich or bread runs, it's fine, and much safer than my old trick of hanging grocery bags from the handlebars.
There is also theoretically a slight possibility that the "handle" might "pop up" on a big bump, which might allow the basket to come loose, although I've never had that happen. To prevent that possibility (I'm a bit paranoid) I put the velcro strap from my lock around the handle at the side, to prevent it from popping up. This also has the handy effect of strapping my lock in securely to the basket so it doesn't fly out.

nice light duty basket. easy to install. if you have brake and shifter cables you may have to push them around to accomodate the bracket but its doable.nice powdet coat finish looks real nice. today i loaded it with 15 lbs and id say thats the limit. any more wieght and it would have caused the front end to be unstable so is say its good for about ten pounds. the little wald emblem on the front is a nice touch. wald should put it on all their bskets. works great for suspension front forks. many front baskets are not compatible for suspension forks so be sure the basket you get works with your type of fork. if the basket attaches to the handlebars and the eyelets on the bottom tips of the fork probly wont work well with suspension fork.

Just what I wanted, a lift-off, strong basket, well-made!, December 23, 2011

This basket answered what I was looking for in a removable bike basket. Easy to install, took just 10 minutes with simple tools. So easy to remove, and put back on. If fact, I bought this more than 6 months ago, and was riding back 3 miles from the grocery store (I live in So CA) with a 15 lb prime rib, bag of apples, and lots of other misc stuff (see photo with bag). Anyway, this well-made, relatively inexpensive basket performed so well that I decided to write this review for Amazon. Why not? I used all of the reviews to make my buying decision...Hands down, a great buy, a great basket.

Bike shopping, December 8, 2011

A shopping bag will fit perfectly into this basket. the mounting on the bike was really easy and straightforward. the fact that the basket can be taken off really easily from the bike to do the shopping is a great plus.

I have a mountain bike and this product did not fit at all The locking mechanism is very weak and the basket could fall even before you start riding your bike.Wald 3133 Q-R Bolt-On Front Handlebar Bike Basket

Very easy to install, don't let the instructions intimidate you. If you are still uneasy, look up some help on [..] Easy to get the basket on and off, and I used it the night I installed it for a run to Wal-Mart (carried home a box of waffles and a bag of pancakes). Going to use it for some extra storage for commutes to work, as well as store runs. This basket isn't huge, but if you are like me and needed a little something extra, then this will fit the bill.
