4.0 out of 5 stars.  Works well, tastes like mud, September 11, 2007
By deionychus (Colorado, USA)
It's a fuel-drink, so I didn't expect this to taste great. They call it orange-sicle, but it's really, really bland. Not such a big deal to me, because when you need this kind of endurance fuel, you need to have realistic expectations for flavor (my opinion, anyway).

I used this for the triple bypass ride this summer (120 miles, 10,000 feet of climbing). It did the job just fine. I needed to supplement electrolytes but I'm a 'white-streak' sweater so I burn through salt like crazy. Still, I needed it to keep me going for about 8 hours and it did.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Fuel for Long Endurance Events, April 21, 2010
By Will Murphy (Hollywood, FL United States)
Perpetuem is a powder you mix with water to make a drink that supplies your needs during long endurance events. It contains complex carbs, healthy fats and a small amount of an easily digestible protein, as well as other ingredients to do things like buffer lactic acid.

If you like to mix it really strong (which is what I do; I carry plain water separately) consider the plain flavor, as the original flavor gets a bit sweeter than I like it when made that way. The latte flavor has gotten great reviews, is supposedly good even when not cold, and has a small amount of caffeine. I have not tried that flavor yet so I can't comment on it.

If you have trouble tolerating Perpetuem when running, consider Hammer's Sustained Energy as an option.

One other thing about Hammer -- the customer support is second to none. Their website is replete with information about sports nutrition and their products, and you can get advice from their well-trained staff. They will be happy to discuss your needs.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good product, but NOT in individual packets, April 18, 2010
By sherflo
Mild, enjoyable flavor...similar to melted creamscicle. Using this for half ironman. The product page shows the individual packet for the orange flavor 16 serving size. I received a large canister. I'll just have to transfer it over to snack size zip bags. No biggie--just misleading info page.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  All around supplement, October 8, 2009
By ES Teacher (Apex, NC)
I had heard many positive reviews of this product and explored this and alternative solutions for my endurance training. I love this stuff. I cannot say it does more than gels or bars but it has quite the ingredient list and I love being able to mix my "gel." I am thinking that using this product requires new attention to hydration options because it does provide sodium and other related items. On several runs I became mega-thirsty and I am now thinking I was not so much dehydrated as overdoing it with this product AND a sports drink. I have since halved my sports drink on the long run with success but may reduce it more. One final note. Mix this stuff a a bit thinner than gel consistency as I found it thickened during a long run and I could not squeeze or suck out the last ounces. Now I use a 10 ounce bottle and mix it into a liquid. Problem solved.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  an endurance athlete's best friend, March 17, 2010
By C. Peck (California, USA)
I use this mix on my 5+ hour mountain bike races. No other product comes close to prevent that 3 hour "bonk" - when you just cant do anything and you don't care... that lack of will that doesn't come from your legs, but your entire system. You can just feel the energy when you use it. (I typically start taking it 1 hour into my races). I highly recommend it.

Side note: do not train with this mix (or use 1/2 concentrations). the high calorie content, which makes it great for race day, might not let you shed the pounds as quickly during the training period if you use it all the time.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Much easier to get down than the solids., June 5, 2011
By Sean
I've been using the cafe latte flavor of perpetuem. The taste is much more palatable than the strawberry solids I was using. Additionally, I have a very hard time getting the solid tablets chewed and swallowed while running. This is much easier to mix in a gel flask. In this way I can get the benefits of the nutrient density of perpetuem while using it in a gel like form.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Our Go-To Supplement for Long Runs, October 1, 2010
By Nathan (Myrtle Beach, SC United States)
I have consumed a lot of supplements over the years, from bodybuilding to endurance sports. With the exception of ON 100% Whey protein, this is me and my wife's favorite supplement.

Tough I'm not immune to the possibility of placebo effect, I've never had any gel, bean, block, or drink that seemed to be as 'magical' as this one. I love that I can mix as needed because I usually can't consume enough water at once for gels. So I make this pretty thick and try to space out my water intake.

I will say that it is hard to mix, but that's really not that big of a deal. We bought a tub of the Orange cream... which is fine. Some days I like the taste, other days I don't. It is certainly tolerable.

Ultimately I'd give it a 4.5/5 and we will be buying again.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent Nutrition Beginning to End, June 10, 2010
By Balthazar3n (Manchester, VT)
I used Pepetuem on a recent Grand Canyon Rim to Rim, for me a 10.5 hour hike. I never tanked out and felt great the next day. I'm planning a Presi Traverse for next month and Prpetuem will be along for the ride.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Ideal for Long Bike Rides, September 25, 2011
By Sanjay Dalal (Mumbai, India)
Used Perpetuem for Ironman training, which has a bike ride of 180k and takes up to 8 hours. Doing a previous diet of gels and gatorde did not provide enough energy during a 3 hour plus bike ride. Switching to Perpetuem i am getting about 300 to 400 calories per hour which provided the perfect glycogen delivery to the muscle and i am able to power away while doing a 4 to 6 hour bike ride. Each scoop consists of 125 calories and critically taste good.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  I will be using this for a while, August 30, 2011
By rcblu2 (Chicago, IL United States)
I like this product. I have used it on a number of workouts over 2.5 hours including a 7 hour century ride. I wouldn't call it "delicious", but I can drink it for an extended period of time and tolerate it all the way through. I have had no stomach problems using it. My energy level seems very even throughout the workouts, and even afterwards I don't seem to be so wiped out. I will be using Perpetuem for a while and will be looking at getting some Heed for my workouts shorter than 2 hours.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Perfect supplement for endurance events, June 28, 2011
By KayakSurfer (Kailua, HI)
Originally purchased in 2010 prior to Pa'a Eono "iron" canoe race from Molokai to Oahu. Provided more sustenance than the Hammer Heed, which I also use but for different levels of competition. The taste is very subtle but appreciated when in the thick of paddling. Worked for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Everything you need without artificial ingredients!, March 28, 2011
By M. White (Oregon, USA)
I've used many different brands to supplement my nutrition during strenous training, races, runs, & rides. Basically they all do they same thing, but just package their product in a different container. Hammer Nutrition is the only line of products I've found that uses all natural ingredients. My thought is if I'm going to supplement why not use something natural? Besides that I personally think it tastes better than most other brands I've tried; on a hot day I don't feel like I'm trying to choke down warm syrup.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great sustainability, March 20, 2011
By pajoryja
Rode 83 miles that included 5700 ft. of tough climbing and I know I couldn't have done it without Perpetuem/Cafe Latte. Great flavor. Tried the Orange on an earlier ride and wasn't impressed with the flavor.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great!, October 16, 2010
By Erich Menge (Plymouth, Minnesota United States)
I tried the Cafe Latte flavor of Perpetuem. I put two scoops in a 24 oz bottle to try it out on a 2 hour bike ride. 2 hours isn't very long and probably a bit short for what the product is intended for but I wanted to try it out on a shorter ride just incase I had any issues with it.

First of all, I can't speak on the flavor of the Orange since I haven't tried it, but the cafe latte flavor actually tasted pretty good. Didn't taste chalky at all, tasted like a light creamy coffee drink. It didn't make me feel bloated at all and gave me the energy I needed to ride 20 miles head on into 15-20 mph winds and still maintain an average 18 mph speed.

What more can I say? It is a great product.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice Mellow Taste, June 28, 2010
By Robert B. Connor (Kenmore, WA USA)
I think it does a good job of giving me good power on long bike rides. I really like the suble flavor. I found that mixing it into a gel works well and it is the best tasting gel I have tried. The flavor in drink form has a hint of milkiness to it which is fine in cool weather. I am not sure how that will work on a hot day. I may go with gel form in a flask and water in my bottles.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Made me nauseous, June 1, 2010
By Richard (VA United States)
My first time using it was on a 100km ride. I found that the first bottle was difficult to get down and it was just under two scoops in a 0.7L water bottle. Afterward I felt a little bloated and switched to water for the next bottle. The second - freshly mixed - bottle left me feeling on the edge of vomiting after every sip. I spent the rest of the ride balancing nausea against glycogen depletion.

I might try it again just to see if it's an adaptation or heat (it was 32C and humid) problem...but I doubt it. This stuff didn't sit right and it doesn't help that the orange vanilla flavour tastes revolting in warm water.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great product for thru-hikers, May 9, 2010
By TrailHacker (Santa Barbara, CA USA)
I bought this product because I was hiking the PCT and was concerned that I would not be able to keep up the daily pace of 20+ miles per day. I used this and Heed. I never felt burned out and never felt ill effects from hiking between 21 and 26 miles each day. I believe that this product really helped.

The taste is slight which for me was what I wanted. Too many sugary sports drinks overwhelm you with artificial flavors. This one I find very pleasant.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  What a difference!, February 3, 2012
By faffod
A friend was training for an ironman, and I partnered with him on the bicycle training rides (IMHO a triathlon is a good bike ride ruined on both ends). Putting in 100+ miles every weekend was pushing my limits, and I was usually cramping before the ride was over. I decided to try supplementing my ride with Perpetuem (as opposed to just cliff bars and the occasional electrolyte tablet). It made a dramatic difference on my first ride out. Ok, to be honest it was my second ride, I first rode a shorter 2 hour ride just to see how my stomach would react.

The plus:
- the flavor is very subdued. I usually am not a fan of strawberry anything (except fresh ones), but even after 6 hours the taste didn't overwhelm (unlike gatoraid after a long day in the sun).
- It mixes well, I pack a series of ziplock bags each with one measured dose and add them to my water when I refill. Shake and ride on.
- I don't suffer a drop in performance on 3+ hour rides through the mountains
- My legs don't feel like they need a recovery day for the next two days either.

The minus:
- I'm going to nit-pick here. The package states "Made with natural ingredients", yet the ingredient list has 0 strawberry or vanilla... I am not put off by this, but since I noticed it I felt that I should mention it in the review for those who might be put off by this.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  This Works Great for Half Marathons and regular workouts, December 20, 2011
By Edy C Alcantara jr.
I've use this item during my Half Marathons and regular workouts like pliometrix and lifting weights. It works all the time! It's great for a pick me up drink before a workout and during your workout. I recommend buying this item. I like the Vanilla or the coffee flavor. Kind of bland for people who likes sweet taste but I don't mind (add sugar as needed).

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great product, December 12, 2011
By M. A. Deere
Just used the cafe latte Perpetuem in a triathlon and I believe it helped me from losing energy. I didn't have any problem with stomach upset either. I did dilute the product a bit more than recommended, but I am small and was nervous about stomach upset. Will buy more in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  The best combination drink to consume during P90X strength exercises, November 14, 2011
By Vladimir Kelman (Silver Spring, MD, USA)
Here's the best combination drink to consume during P90X strength exercises. I found and tried this formula today, and there is nothing tastier and better to support your muscles strength:

1.
- 2 measurement caps of Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Gold Standard, Double Rich Chocolate, 5 Pound
- 1 measurement cap of Perpetuem Sports Drink Mix by Hammer Nutrition

2. Mix it into 12-16 fl. oz water bottle [...]
3. Drink and enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Keep it cool!, November 13, 2011
By Brian H. Nelson (Boston, MA, US)
Flavor isn't too bad, it can be tricky at first figuring out how many scoops you need and on 2+ hour rides you're going to have to mix a new batch mid ride.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  works very well...tastes yucky, November 7, 2011
By Chemnitz (Northern Minnesota)
Yucky taste seems to go with the territory with soy-based endurance fuels. So now that we have this out of the way...it works. I am an endurance cyclist and ride about 3000 miles a year, with half of my mileage in the 60-110 mile range. Once your ride exceeds 2.5 hours nutrition becomes critical. Its at this threshold that I begin supplementing with Perpetuem. Once the ride exceeds 3.5 hours I depend on Perpetuem almost exclusively. The directions have a helpful guide for mixing a bottle based on weight and duration of exercise. There are a few hard and fast rules.

FIRST, you must drink water or you will become dehydrated: the chief symptom being [you guessed it!] NAUSEA. With every "dose" of Perpetuem you need to drink 2 or more mouthfuls of water. I have a buddy who filled his camelbak with perpetuem and claimed that he bonked during a mountain bike race. What really happened is that he got dehydrated. You can't process these kinds of calories without water.

SECOND, all you need is a small mouthful every 20 minutes, and consistency is the key to maintaining your energy. A big mouthful will make you nauseous. The calories are too concentrated for large doses. I use a clear 16 oz bottle and drew lines in 2 oz increments on the exterior to help measure my intake. That said, you will need to experiment with several rides before you dial-in the right intake for your metabolism.

THIRD, be careful with mixing other foods. Typically I supplement lightly with Honey Stingers, Hammer Gel, or Clif Shotblocks. I dillute my electrolyte drink 50% and try to stay away from the ones that have a lot of sugar. Fresh fruit is also good. If you begin to feel a bit bloated, back off on the supplements: the Perpetuem is giving you all you need.

IMHO, most people who have trouble with nausea will do much better by taking the above to heart. This is an awesome product backed by ridiculous amounts of research and field-testing. The folks in Whitefish, Montana are passionate about their products.
