Big city riders need big city protection, as would-be thieves aren't intimidated by just any lock. Enter the Kryptonite New York LS U-lock, which features a 16mm hardened Max-Performance steel shackle designed to resist bolt cutters and leverage attacks. Ideal for anyone who lives in moderately high crime areas, the New York LS boasts an 11 ranking on the Kryptonite 1-12 comparison system, which ranks the varying levels of security within the company's product range. A lock that ranks 1 on the Kryptonite scale might work if you live in the burbs and have a Rottweiler parked next to your bike or motorcycle. However, city dwellers demand extreme protection, which is why the New York LS is built for serious deterrent security. The U-lock offers such additional security-enhancing features as a high-security disc-style cylinder; a double deadbolt locking system for extensive holding power; a protective vinyl coating; and a sliding dust cover that protects and extends the cylinder life. As a bonus, the lock comes with three keys, one of which is lighted with a high-intensity bulb that makes it easy to unlock the New York LS after dark. The New York LS U-lock measures 10.25 by 4 inches. The Legendary Durability of Kryptonite Locks The first big test for Kryptonite locks came in 1972, when Kryptonite founder Michael Zane directed the Second Avenue Bicycle Shop in New York City to lock a three-speed bicycle to a signpost in Greenwich Village. Although thieves immediately stripped all of the bicycle's removable parts, the bicycle itself remained for 30 days and 30 nights. The Kryptonite lock and the bike frame were still in place, even though the lock had been attacked numerous times. The publicity gave Kryptonite the boost it needed and forever changed the face of bicycle security. Twenty-two years later, Kryptonite returned to the streets of the Big Apple to test its latest innovation, the New York lock. In April 1994, the New York Post laid down the ultimate challenge: Could Kryptonite's New York lock last 48 hours on the toughest streets of New York? In a city where more than 100,000 bikes are stolen each year, Kryptonite and the Post locked a brand-new, bright green Univega road bike worth $600 to a parking meter in the East Village--the Bermuda Triangle of New York bicycle thievery. For a full 48 hours, the bike remained locked on the corner of Avenue A and 11th Street. Zane and Neil McDaid, director of product development and design for Kryptonite, watched from around the corner as the bike came under every possible means of assault, stumping thieves at every turn. After 48 hours the bike remained intact except for the gear derailleur, which had been stripped off. The lock showed definite signs of abuse, but it had not failed. The New York lock had met the Post's challenge. Not satisfied with the length of the test, Zane moved the bike to SoHo for another six days and, finally, uptown near the Lincoln Center. Even in these high-theft areas the properly locked bike lasted another three weeks before being pulled off the streets by Zane and McDaid. The Post also ran the New York lock through a battery of street tests using common bike theft tools: a 4-foot bolt cutter, a crowbar, and a hammer. The non-Kryptonite locks cracked in seconds, but all methods failed on the New York lock, even the monstrous bolt cutter, which was rendered useless with large dents in its jaws. About Kryptonite In the early 1970s, Michael Zane was a free-spirited, bearded kid with a VW van and a big idea for a new kind of lock. He traveled thousands of miles showing the unique U-shaped locking device and spreading his passion for bicycle security to bike dealers all around the country and forged lifetime relationships. The company soon expanded its product line to include power sports, hardware, and snow sports security. Through innovative product designs, cutting-edge marketing savvy, legendary customer service, and pure fanaticism for security, Kryptonite grew with a cult-like following. In 2001, the company that was started in a VW van was purchased by industry giant Ingersoll Rand and became a flagship brand in the company's Security Technologies sector. Publications such as Bicycling, Fortune, The Wall Street Journal, US News & World Report, and a host of others continued to tout Kryptonite products as the best on the market. The company's dedication to its customers is best represented by its actions during the fall of 2004, when it was discovered that the industry-standard tubular cylinder could be compromised, at times, with a household item. Kryptonite flew into action, created a voluntary lock exchange program, and replaced more than 400,000 locks in 21 countries for free. In essence, the company redesigned the equivalent of nine years worth of new products in just 10 short months. Kryptonite is the only company in the world that offered such a comprehensive plan to customers, taking its "legendary customer service" pledge to new heights.

Wow...this thing seems very secure, June 3, 2010
By Mark Evans (Cincinnati, OH)

Being in Cincinnati I am usually told that a cable lock is acceptable to lock up your bike since the city isn't known for many bike thefts unlike Chicago or New York but I felt it was better to be safe than sorry. This is a great lock and when used properly, I feel safe leaving it most anywhere I go. I have had no problems with the key since it operates smoothly.
For some reason, it is almost impossible to find out the lock weight and total dimension online. Most measurements only give you the inner lock measurements. The lock weights 4 lbs 5 ounces and is 6 5/8" x 12 7/8".

NYC Approved, August 14, 2009
By D. Fairchild (Queens, NY)

This lock is excellent for city use. It's convenient to carry (I either strap it to my rack or throw it in a backpack), and secures both wheel and frame to a rack or sign post. Can't swing a light post, but so what. I used the Krypto chain for many years and found it to be waaay to much of a hassle to lug around.
Tip: This lock sticks like crazy after getting wet the first time. WD40 it a bit and it works like a charm.

Big, Bold, Solid, June 15, 2010
By C. Joo Kee (Singapore)
|
|
The item shipped to me is a Kryptonite New York Lock MC, not the stated LS. But the looks & diamension are the same as stated. So it could be a newer model. When I first open the box, I got a shock. The lock is simply so big and long! My mom asked if that's a weapon!
Yup. It can easily lock your bike and rear wheel to most metal grills /bars / bike holder at ease. Just be mindful that its heavy. But its the solid quality of this heavy lock will keep your bike safe. Well for me, I only carry this lock and a 10mm cable to loop through my front wheel and lock it into this U-lock. I trust that the 16mm hardened steel shackle is close to impossible to crack, thus its safe to use this as my sole lock.
I do note that the entire lock is coated with a very nice black glossy vinyl finish. I appreciate the fact that vinyl finishing can protect my bike from scratches when using this lock since its so heavy. This is a plus point if you use the lock daily and thus vinyl surface will avoid wear & tear scratches on your bike. However, I'm afraid that after some time the vinyl surface might suffer from deterioration as the gloss rubbery surface is bound to wear off after intense usage. To counter this issue, I've taped up the entire lock using gaffer tape as a protectve measure.
Ihis is a lock that will give me a peace of mind. Great lock!

Awesome lock!, May 23, 2010
By ShaggyDog (Irving, TX United States)
|
|
Great lock! It is all I wanted in a lock, sturdy, tough and big enough to lock the wheel and frame to a pole or bike rack! I also love the light feature in the key, which comes in handy when trying to open the lock in the night.
I personally think the insurance that the manufacturer offers is non-sense. I did not opt for it primarily because it had to be sent in with in 15 days of purchasing the lock. I was on vacation right after buying the lock so I did not send it in. I think it is probably easier to insure the bike through homeowners insurance or renter's insurance.
Oh: If you are a weight weenie, don't buy this lock!

Excellent lock! Sub-par key!, September 1, 2011
By J. Chase
|
|
I live in Montana and we have harsh winters so I keep my bike inside at all times except for the summer. Recently, the temperature has been dropping (to the mid 60s) so I decided it was time to bring my bike in. However, when I attempted to unlock the bike, the key actually twisted off and shattered inside the lock.
I have had this lock for less than a year, and it (nor my key) have ever been exposed to any temperature below 60, nor snow. While the lock has been exposed to the rain, I find it hard to believe that this alone would ruin the key hole, especially considering I use the plate which covers the top of the lock.
Anyway, I called the local police to see if they could help me cut the lock, and so far, they have been unsuccessful. We'll probably need some sort of grinder or torch to remove this lock. At least this lock has proven to work well!
Overall, I would recommend this lock because it is, without a doubt, the most secure lock I have ever owned for a bike. However, if you use use this lock, I would advise that you use a special lubricating oil on the inside of the lock's key hole every month or two (or at least until the company makes a key out of something other than flimsy aluminum).

Strong lock, October 24, 2009
By K. Choy (Chicago, IL)
|
|
My bike is pretty flashy, and I live in Chicago. I'm glad I went the extra mile to get a strong bike lock.
I've been using it for about 5 months now. I have had no problems with bike theft or vandalism.
It's really long, so you can lock it to just about anything.
My only concern was that the plastic around the key hole broke off pretty quickly. It doesn't really matter, but I thought it was odd.
Other than that, great lock!

High Security And Heavy U-Lock For Unattended Bikes, May 5, 2011
By L. Dyer
|
|
I will start my review by saying that as expected, the lock is extremely sturdy and heavy, weighing 4 pounds 5 ounces and comes with three keys. The shackle is 3/4" thick and the locking mechanism is 1 1/2" in diameter, which is a great deterrent for most of the opportunity bike theft situations since it should be extremely hard for someone to defeat the lock without the use of some power tools. The interior dimensions of the shackle are 4" wide and 10 1/4" from the top center bottom of the shackle to the top of the yellow locking mechanism which is longer and wider than most. The yellow locking mechanism also removes completely from the double-post shackle when unlocked which allows for easy securement of the the frame and rear tire (and the front tire if you remove it) to most posts. The lock exterior dimensions are 6 5/8" x 12 7/8".
The entire U-lock is coated with a durable vinyl coating, which has held up well even after the lock falling off of the bike twice after being jolted off by heavy bumps. My only gripe is the black cover on the locking mechanism rotates easily if twisted and can keep the shackle from locking, not a very big issue if you handle the locking mechanism by the yellow cover instead when placing and removing the lock. The bottom of the lock has a sliding key hole cover which is easy to operate and locks in and out place. The lock uses a high-security type key which makes the lock very pick-resistant and should be far more secure than the previous round tumbler designs from Kryptonite (some can be opened using a Bic pen!). One of the keys has a built in LED light which is very bright if you need to use it at night. If you register the lock key code on Kryptonite's Website you can receive a replacement should you ever lose the keys that come with the lock. The theft guarantee had too many restrictions to be useful, so I wouldn't use that as a primary reason to purchase this lock.
The reason I didn't rate the lock 5-stars is at first the locking mechanism would stick at times, making it difficult to remove the key. I used some silicone spray in the key hole which has definitely helped. The other issue is that since this is such a large and heavy lock, finding somewhere to secure it on your bike isn't easy. I hang the lock from a bracket on the handlebars that is for a front basket and the weight of the lock is sufficient to keep it from moving unless you go over a very large bump in the road. Overall this would be an excellent and high security lock for anyone leaving a bicycle unattended for long periods of time or in a high crime area. For other situations like a quick trip to the store it's probably overkill, but is great for piece of mind as long as you don't mind the added weight on your bike and have a way to carry it.
If you don't have a convinient place to carry the lock on your bicycle and don't mind a shorter length U-lock, the Kryptonite New York Standard Bicycle U-Lock with Bracket ( 4-Inch x 8-Inch) might be a better choice since it basically a shorter (4" x 8") and a bit lighter (3.9lbs) version of the New York LS U-Lock, with the same 16mm shackle and includes a bracket to mount the lock on your bike.

more security than most people will ever need, August 14, 2009
By Sesshomaru (Va. USA)

This lock is stronger than just about anything you'll lock your bike to.
it is quite heavy, in excess of 5 pounds, so it doesn't ride with me when I take out my fast bike during daylight hours (I have a much lighter lock for that).
If you lock your bike outside over-night, you can rest easy when you secure your steed with this monster.
kryptonite makes lighter locks if weight is an issue.

Not practical and way too heavy, September 5, 2010
By FF_NYC (NYC)
|
|
I purchased and subsequently returned this item (unopened) back to Amazon due to mainly the weight of the lock. In the product description provided by Kryptonite, the lock is also intended for locking a motorbike... Unless you have a very expensive bike, in my opinion, you don't really need this lock. Amazon was absolutely fantastic in accepting my return and subsequently refunded me in full (including cost of shipping back the item).
Then, I purchased a Kryptolock series 2 standard including the cable and 2 keys from Amazon. This lock is perfect for my need, I bike and park my Specialized around New York City. The weight of the lock is reasonable, please see product description, it is also easier to use compared to Bulldog (which is also great)... but I prefer K series 2. I'd recommend this lock to anyone anytime!

Lock Failure, October 29, 2011
By Tom Burke
|
|
I bought this top of the line lock a month ago to protect my new bike from Mission Bicycles in San Fran. I wanted the absolute best lock to protect the bike in this city of fairly active theft. So it turns out the culprit wasn't a thief but the lock itself. On my third outing with the newly purchased lock, the key completely snapped off upon attempting to (gently I might add) unlock the U-lock. $140 bucks and a great locksmith later, I managed to save the bike, but will be letting Kryptonite know about their crap product in the next week. Will update once I hear back from them.

Kryptonite New York LS U lock, October 15, 2010
By Calgal
|
|
I have used this lock for a little over a month now. No problems with it sticking or keys being flimsy, the lock mechanism works smoothly. I have used it to lock up two bikes when my daughter and I have been out together, the size of the lock being enough to get around the back tires (within the triangle of the frames). I feel quite secure knowing our bikes are locked up with a quality lock like this one! Yes it is a bit heavy, mine gets put in a small backpack and I hardly notice it!

Probably worth the extra $$$, December 1, 2011
By NB
|
|
I wasn't sure whether to get this lock or a slightly smaller one, as I wanted to make sure I could lock up two bikes, but this seemed like over kill. Turns out that this worked perfectly! I can easily lock up two bikes with this lock, and feel the security of a Kryptonite lock.
Pros: -big enough to lock up two bikes to any post -fits nicely on the rear rack of my bike -very durable material, can tell that it's not easy to cut through, tamper with, etc. -3 keys! and one of them has a built in LED light, so I'm not worried about losing them anytime soond
Cons: -heavy -big (which works out well for me since it sits nicely on my bike's rear rack (I tie it down with a few bungees), but if I were trying to hold it in a pocket or backpack or something that might be a different story) -That little latch that covers the keyhole can be a pain to move sometimes, but it does offer additional security
Overall, the price increase from a regular kryptonite to this one probably isn't worth it for most people, and I'm not even sure if it's worth it for me, but with a bike lock I guess it's one of those things you wouldn't know about until it goes missing. With this lock, I feel pretty confident that my bike is not going to go missing.

One tough, heavy customer-and worth it!, December 27, 2010
By second bass (Alameda, CA)
|
|
I bought this heavy-duty Kryptonite New York LS U-lock after my town bike was stolen from my front steps and later returned (an amazing story in and of itself).
The New York series is tougher and heavier than most people need here in Alameda, CA, but it means business and is worth the heft and inconvenience compared to the lighter-weight Kryptonite Evolution LS locks we own. I always buy the longer-shank models as they reach around more poles and other objects that are usually available, and make locking my bike slightly faster and more convenient. I use a Kryptonite braided cable with the LS U-lock to secure the front wheel and stabilize the bike so it cannot be knocked over accidentally. The U-lock itself always wraps around an immovable object, the bike frame, and a wheel so it is a serious and sufficient deterrent by itself.
Kryptonite makes a great product line and is very good with customer service and support. I just wish they made it easier to order same-keyed sets of locks via their retailers or to get these re-keyed.
Make sure that you register your new U-lock and get the free set of spare keys for it BEFORE you lose a key; that way your anti-theft insurance will be in effect and you will have the spare keys in case you lose the originals.

Amazing, June 29, 2009

I have no doubt this is the best lock money can buy, and it is super huge. Big enough that I lock both my bikes with it. Key hole has a nice weatherproof cover that slides open when you need to unlock it. It is pretty heavy and there is pretty much no way to mount it on the bike, you need to carry this in a backpack or something.
When I leave my bike locked with this sucker the thought of someone stealing my bike never even crosses my mind.

Does NOT come with bracket or mount, April 17, 2011
By Badtz Buyer (Los Angeles, CA United States)

As others mentioned, this is a very heavy lock and seems to be quite substantial. Fair enough, but what I did not realize is that it does NOT come with a bracket or any other way of mounting it onto a bike. Most other U-locks do.
The particular item also arrived with a deep scratch at the top, but I presume that's not the norm.

A solid lock for big city bikers, February 6, 2012
By electricx
|
|
This is a solid lock for bicyclists who live in major cities where theft is a big problem. No lock can guarantee that your bike won't be stolen, but this one comes as close as possible.
In addition, the large 4x10.25 inch size of this lock allows you to secure your wheel and frame (both) to an object such as a street sign or parking meter without using a seperate cable.
The only downsides to this lock are that it is heavy (required for this level of security) and that the keys are made of weak material. A key will probably last 2-3 years, but the lock comes with several so you should be able to use it for more than half a decade.

Just what I was looking for..., October 3, 2011

I'm one of those super-paranoid people that pops off their front tire every time I lock my bike. I wanted a long u-lock to be able to lock my bike to awkward objects (other than bike racks). This baby hasn't failed me yet. I have a huge scratch/gash in the lock where some b*st*rd tried to pry the lock. They were obviously unsuccessful, as I still have my bike...

The big daddy of the bicycle lock family., November 29, 2011
By V8 (Hill Country, Edwards Plateau, Texas)
|
|
This particular lock is rated at 11/12 on Kryptonite's security scale. Most people report it as 12/12, but it is not billed as such by the factory. (It maybe that the lock is big enough to allow hydraulic bottle jacks to be put in place and used to force the lock. So the smaller standard model might be rated at 12/12 based on that difference.) Yes, a battery powered angle grinder will make short work of one side of the lock. But, unless you have a spare battery you won't do the job that way. Both sides are locked and stationary so you have to cut both sides, and that will take about 40 minutes (and if you have two locks, now what?) By the way, 2 of these locks weigh less than the huge toughened chains, and cost about as much. This presumes that the place you park your bike at night allows two SEPARATE locking points, two different light posts, two different metal loops in concrete. Or an armored cable, which required a different mode of attack. So the answer is not merely 3 batteries.
I have deliberately not said what brand of cars had small hydraulic jacks, so you can't just go to the junk yard and get the jack cheap, nor how to remove the huge armored cables. That would be too easy. If you use this lock, PROPERLY, expect the thieves to try some other bike. (They can't make a living off this kind of security.)

*Potentially* the Most Secure Lock, August 19, 2011
By J. Holton (Cincinnati, OH USA)
|
|
If you remove your front wheel and lock it to your back wheel and frame with this lock you are golden. This is actually the most secure method for locking your bicycle. However, if you bring your bike inside at night, and find yourself locking it up for fairly short periods of time, then removing your front wheel and attaching it to the rear wheel can be pretty time consuming. This is my case, and why I opted for the Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboutit Mini Bicycle U-Lock (3.25 x 6-Inch) with a cable over this lock.
This lock is HUGE. It is not practical to mount, as others have said, but neither is the Fahgettaboudit, really (but it's slightly easier). As others have said, this is the MC model, not the LS.
One method used to defeat U-Locks is to place a car jack in the U and break it open. So if you use this lock be sure to "fill the U" as much as possible, that way there won't be enough room to get a jack in there. This lock is so large that if you are just attaching your frame to a pole you won't be able to "fill the U." However, I've found that the Fahgettaboutit is too narrow to fit around some parking meters in downtown Cincinnati, and will not fit on light posts. The MC, on the other hand, will allow you to secure your bike to these objects due to its size. Therefore, this lock actually gives you more options when looking for something to lock to.
Kryptonite rated this lock's security an 11 out of 12, and the slightly thicker Fahgettaboudit a 12 out of 12. However, it completely depends on your locking technique! Depending on what you lock to, you may be able to lock both wheels and the frame together with the Fahgettaboudit--it's a bit small. But if you are OK with doing this on a consistent basis I'd rate this lock a 13 out of 12.

Safe & Secure, July 22, 2011
By KKish
|
|
I recently moved to New York City & use my bike as my main mode of transportation. Of course, I wanted to make sure that my ride was secure while inside a shop or even at work. I researched several best rated locks. Needless to say, I settled with the Kryptonite New York lock. It had the most favorable reviews & was a good value for its purpose. The lock alone weighs at least 6 pounds...yeah the extra weight is a little bit of a hassle, but at least I can rest assured my bike is safe. It's easy to use and it comes with a few sets of keys in case one is lost. Overall, it's fantastic. It was a little more expensive than others, but I would rather pay the $60 for a lock than $500+ to replace a stolen bike. No brainer.

Good Product, Best Price, No Mount., July 17, 2011

My local bike store wanted $99 for the NY Forgeddaboutit bike lock by Kryptonite. However that lock is small and doesn't allow for a whole lot of mounting options. Not to mention the price is pretty wild.
I purchased this lock in order to give me more mounting options with my bike and I've been pretty satisfied with it. Unfortunately this lock doesn't come with a mounting bracket for your bike, I've purchased some after market lock blocks but so far nothings done the job so I'm left carrying it around in my pack. It's pretty heavy so it can feel a little inconvienent at times.

Good lock!, July 14, 2011

This U-lock looks like the "tank" of locks. It is really heavy duty but easy to use. I place it in a rear trunk carrier because it is too heavy and long to mount on my trike. Hopefully it is a good deterrent to would be thieves.

No problem, June 22, 2011
By Graphate

At first I thought this would be too big, and when I first started using it I thought it was pointlessly large. However, after the first week I have decided this is the perfect size. It fits around standard bike racks and secures the bike well. It has a weather-protectant-key-guard which should help keep the lock mechanisms working well, it has a very smooth lock.
Outside my building I kept my bike (attached to a tree), I was on the 3rd floor looking down and happened to see someone fiddling with the lock. They shook the tree and abandoned the investigation... don't know if they were planning to steal my bike or admiring the lock... either way, I feel better with this lock than my previous one.

The lock is solid, well built and the materials used to make the product is very good. I highly recommend this particular lock in securing your bicycle out there in the streets.

I went to many LBS and can never find this lock. Took a few seconds googling and found it on Amazon at an amazing price. Lock came fast, I am very pleased with my purchase. Though the item that shipped to me is the New York Lock MC not LS, But I suspect they are exactly the same.

Bike stolen within 2 weeks of owning the lock, June 30, 2011
By BFC90

Given that this lock did not do what it was supposed to (i.e. Keep my bike from getting stolen), I cannot in any way recommend it. I bought the lock two weeks ago and my bike was stolen yesterday. The bike was locked correctly to a sign, but was taken in broad day light. My guess is that there is some flaw with this model.
Another note - if you don't have a piece of the lock after your bike gets stolen, Kryptonite indicated to me that they will not refund you for the cost of your bike.
In conclusion, save some money and go with a cheaper, better lock.

Simply a good lock, May 17, 2012
By Michael Weinstein (Los Angeles)
|
|
The good: Simple operation and a reputation that will discourage many thieves from even trying The bad: It's heavy. Very heavy. Unbelievably heavy. But the heaviness is almost certainly a function of how tough it is. Other than that, it performs exactly as specified. I have no complaints. The ugly:
Overall: It's a bike lock. I generally pay it no mind while I ride or while I'm parked. Using it to lock a bike is simple enough, and the lock is solid enough that I have no worries leaving my bike parked with it on.
Important note: This one does not come with a built-in mounting bracket and spline. If you want to be able to mount it to your frame, you will either need to find a different one of these with the mounting gear already on or order the hardware as a separate item (which will run 10-20 bucks).

I had a combo lock and my bike got stolen. This thing cost as much as my new road bike, but it worth it. Still have my bike and I feel like I can trust it will be there when I get back.

Great lock!, October 27, 2011

My boyfriend and I both have this lock. We are in a large city near New York (Jersey City). We leave our bikes outside often and they have not been stolen. The lock is great, but I couldn't give it 5 stars because about a month after buying it, my boyfriend's key hole cover fell off. The lock still works fine though.

are you sure it new?, March 5, 2012
By bikerguy (chicago illinois)

this lock looks theft proof but are you sure its new? i bought the faghetabout it u lock as well but it turns out its too short to lock both tires with the frame. so i bought this one. the other one came in its own box with a set of keys and instructions inside, this one just came in the packaging box with out its own box. with the keys and the instruction book in a plastic baggie. the lock looks like its a little beat up around the U part of it and where it has the name its scratched off half. looks like its been use and returned for some reason. oh and by the way. I'm not knocking on kryptonite but there website clearly states to register the key number and your first set of keys are free in case you ever loose your set. well i want to keep the spare ones so i tried to order them and they want me to put my credit card number and charge me 7$ for a set of keys? i don't know about you but i don't call that FREE.. by the way i bought the other lock in a different order. so it was not a matter of fitting the stuff in a box.
