Far too flexy, March 10, 2007
By Kelly Cox (Madison, WI United States)
|
|
I've been commuting all winter using this steel rack, and steel Wald baskets too, and I finally switched back to an old aluminum rack. The Wald steel rack is fine in itself, but it mounts in front with a very flimsy bracket that is held to the rack with one small screw and bolt. This is entirely insufficient, and leads to a wobbly rack system.
A bike rack is generally useless unless it can be firmly mounted to the seat stays of the frame. My commuter bike doesn't have eyelets for mounting a rack, but many racks are sold with little adapter fittings that can attach to the seat stays. The Wald rack would be greatly improved if it could be mounted this way. But even if it could, the rack is made of very soft steel, and the rack itself is still quite flexible.
Buy a cheap aluminum rack instead, you'll have far fewer problems!

LOSER -- POS -- DON'T BUY, December 10, 2006
By Milesman (Redwood City, CA United States)

1. NO INSTRUCTIONS.
2. SCREWS TOO SHORT to go through both rack stay and bike frame member.
Can't be used to mount the rack! Unbeleivable pain in the A__!
3. THIS DOES NOT FIT ADULT-SIZE BIKES WITH TYPICAL MT. BIKE STYLE FRAME!
The bracket provided is not long enough to reach the seat post area for
attachment, unless you tilt the rack forward so much that it's angled
like 30 degrees from the horizontal!! You'll have to go to Home Depot
for new screws and brackets if you really want the hassle of installing
this sucker "creatively". My advice: SKIP IT, go to the local bike
shop for something you can tell will work, and which has proper
hardware and instructions.

Fits only certain bikes, March 13, 2010
By student physician (San Diego, CA USA)

Instructions from Wald [...] :
"The Wald 215 Rear Rack works best with bicycles using 26-inch wheels and a fixed gear, single speed, or internal transmission. Some 700c (28-inch) wheels can be accommodated but only on a case by case
basis.
"1. The rear rack is designed to install at the rear brake or brake bridge on your bicycle.
"2. On most bicycles, regardless of the type of brakes being used, there usually is a tube that sits in between the two rear seat stays on your frame. Many newer bikes still have the bridge, but don't use it due to the use of cantilever, V-style, or disc brakes.
"3. If the brake is mounted to the bridge, then you will need to remove the brake and use the brake bolt to attach the flat, angled bracket to the bolt. Then reinstall the brake and tighten the bolt accordingly.
"4. If the brake is not mounted to the bridge, then you will need to find a bolt, nut and washer that will fit the hole in the bracket and on the brake bridge.
"5. The flat, angled bracket mounts to the front of the platform into the squared holder. The bracket has long slots cut out of the center to provide reach adjustment to the brake bridge.
"NOTE: Many new bicycle frames use a geometry that places
the bike's seat stays at a low position on the seat tube.
"Think of your rear wheel as a clock. If the seat stays (tubes
leading from the rear axle up toward the saddle) contact the
seat tube between the 12 and 1 o'clock positions on the
wheel, then our rack will potentially fit your bike.
"If the seat stays contact the seat tube beyond the 1 o'clock
position, then the included mounting bracket is probably too
short to reach all the way to the brake bridge on your bicycle."
[So bikes with 700c or 28" tires, or bikes with long seat stays, may not fit]

The Rack for a 27" Bike!, October 27, 2008
By Old Hippie (St. Louis, MO.)

See this link... ([...]) This rack is designed to mount to the rear brake assy. See photos I posted. Do your research first. This rack was NOT designed for most of today's newer bikes. This rack was designed for the "Old School" bikes with 27" wheels, such as a Schwinn Varsity or World Sport. I installed mine on a Fuji Sagres 12 speed made roughly in the early to mid 80's. Instructions? Who needs 'em? This is easy to install - it took me about 15 minutes...tops. The connecting brace attaches to the rear brake assembly. Just take off the rear reflector & put the brace where the bracket for the old reflector was. You can then attach the reflector to the rear of the rack when completed. While you're at it...buy a new Avenir Saddle (seat).Avenir Groove Dual Saddle (Black/Grey, Groove Dual (M))

Sturdy, March 10, 2007

The product did not include the screw/nut piece to attach the front of the rack to the bike frame. Finding a way to attach it was not too difficult, but it would have been nice to know before ordering. Now that it is attached it has been working very well. I use it with side baskets to carry groceries and it has never seemed like I was attaching too much weight. Very sturdy.

Great buy!, June 5, 2009
By LiveWire Films (Minneapolis, MN)
|
|
This fit nearly perfectly on my early 80's Schwinn cruiser. I read about several people having to make big modifications. Luckily I only had to bend the metal bracket that connects to the rear breaks and get my own long bolts to attach to the break harness. Not too much work. Someone else mentioned the instructions were hard to follow... what instructions? I actually had to go online and review pictures of the rack on bikes to get a visual to how if fit. That part didn't bug me because I probably wouldn't have followed the instructions anyway... I am a guy. For the price and the quality, it was well worth it. The Panniers we bought fit perfect.

Not worth the shipping cost, August 16, 2008
By Adam Mccoy (Davis, CA)
|
|
Do not try to save a few dollars buying this rack. Shipping will cost you anyway and the rack is not worth the few dollars it cost. It would not mount on my bike due to not having the proper hardware included. My wife's bike has the single center hole this rack MUST have to be mounted, but the metal piece that connects the rack to the hole on the bike is not long enough so the rack can not be mounted level. The short attachment piece means it is tipped quite a bit forward of level. Tipped a few degrees forward might be good, but this is tipped WAY forward and is as far back as the piece allows.
Also, the rack comes with 4 bolts and two nuts. You might think one bolt and nut to connect the bar to the bike, one bolt and nut to connect the front of the rack to the bar, and two bolts to thread into the holes right above where the rear tire connects. If they fit, that might work. The two bolt without nuts were too small to thread into the bike frame. The bolt and nut was too short to reach through the hole to connect the "bar" to the bike frame below the seat... Out of 4 bolts, only 1 could possibly be used so when thinking about the price of this rack add in the cost of a trip to the hardware or bike store to get bolts that actually work. What a waste of time. You get what you pay for with this rack. A CHEAP piece of junk.

Wald to the rescue, October 7, 2011
By Lzzap
|
|
I use my bike for heavy hauling (groceries etc) and have had a string of failures with aluminum racks. The Wald is one of the few steel racks around, and is a must for heavy loads. In this kind of service aluminum is not an option.
Additionally I have lost many racks because of breaks in the lower mount. Almost all racks on the market have a hole in the bottom rod created by "mushing" the rod flat and punching a hole in it. This severely weakens the rod. Even steel racks with punched rods will fail there. The racks I have found most durable use gussets (a small extra plate) and will not fail there. I know of no aluminum racks with a bottom gusset. The Wald as a small gusset at the bottom.
I agree with the mounting issues, every Wald rack I have used requires some patience and trial and error to fit securely. Another complaint with the Wald is the vertical rods taper inward at the top, causing tyre clearance problems. Most racks have vertical rods that attach to the outer edge of the top deck and provide ample clearance.
Finally I have had success with the Wald as a front rack on two separate bikes. This worked only on bikes with selected front forks: they must have the little tabs for forward-facing fender supports, and preferred is a hole for side-pull brakes. Again some creativity is required to get a proper fit.
I have mixed feelings about the Wald, but in my service this or something comparable is required.

Best bike rack for the $$'s, February 2, 2009
By mscfn111 (Az)
|
|
This Wald adjustable bike rack is the best rack for the $$'s out there! It will fit most bikes, except if your bike has a cantilever brake system that is a center pull--it wont work-- as the L shaped mounting bracket fits over the mounting bolt for the brake system, and with a center pull, the brake cable etc is in the way!! My bike has a side pull so the center is open for the L bracket to go over the brake bolt and across the top of the brake system with plenty of height for the rack to bolt to, and is somewhat adjustable!!

An All American Classic, May 26, 2010
By Living the MN Dream (MN United States)
|
|
Most of my bikes are steel frame 70s-80s era road bikes and hard tail mountain bikes. This is a great rack for commuting and zipping around town or campus on that kind of bike. It is solid and well finished. No instructions, but it is pretty obvious how it mounts. The front bracket that mounts to the rear brake mount takes a little bending to fine tune the fit. You do need a frame with eyelets by the rear drop outs. It works fine on a bike with side or center-pull caliper brakes. If you have cantilvers, u-brakes, roller cams, or the like you should check to see if the front bracket will work. Y-frames, downhill full suspension bikes, this probably won't work at all. You will not be happy with this rack if you need ulta-light weight, or need to haul 200 kg of gear. Otherwise a great American product. Classic.

Alright, all is good with this thing, one thing that everybody ought to know, you DO NOT need to buy the separate mounting bracket, it comes with the rack even though it is not shown. You will probably need to buy some new bolts as the ones provided didnt match my bike threads and I needed to drill out the holes a tad in the axle mount tabs. Thats it.

Does not fit, February 9, 2012
By James P. Ansbro (Richmond, Va.)
|
|
I bought this for a Schwinn Cruiser. The rack itself looks ok. As the other reviewers said, the hardware is a joke. After reading some of the other reviews I was under the false impression that the mounting bracket was not included so I ordered one.WRONG! It is included so I wasted some money there. I don,t know if I should take the time and expense of returning this rack. The main problem is the struts are not placed wide enough to clear the wide cruiser fenders. I would have to cut out the sides of the fenders or use pliers to bend them in. Forget it. The customer submitted picture on the rack on a Schwinn cruiser says it fits,"really snug". That is an understatement. It just does not fit and you have to muscle it and risk damage to your fender. This is not a one size fits all rack. Do not buy unless you are sure it will fit your particular bike.

Good for the price, fits my Beach Cruiser OK., October 18, 2011
By darkharlezucreek

No instructions is ANNOYING! I have a feeling this may be a stock part, for bike shops. I ordered it on line, picked it up at the store and there was no packaging, no label, no instructions of any kind included. The hardware bag was ripped and I am missing a nut, but the screws do fit my little wheel thingies (Sorry to be so technical there) fine, the holes by where the back wheel hooks on. I am installation challenged but so far so good. I went to local shops and anything similar was like $30>$60! for aluminum though This matches the style of my bike, is Ok and for $13 I am not b*tching.

No need for the extra hardware, but you may have to customize the front connector, October 17, 2011
By Homer Bartlett (Atlanta, GA)
|
|
I installed this on an old mountain bike and it works fine. Since none of the pictures showed the front mounting connector, and Amazon's "frequently bought together" showed a separate mounting bracket ("215 mounting hardware") I added that, but when the rack arrived I opened the box to discover that it already had one. So now I have an extra, and it's too much trouble to bother shipping it back.
There are no instructions in the box, but it was pretty self-explanatory. I had to bend the front bracket to fit my bike, and find a bolt and nut to secure it to the brake bridge on the seat stay. My rear brake is a suspended wire design, not mounted to the brake bridge via a screw, so I had to be careful with the bracket to avoid interfering with the brake cable. But it's mounted securely now and I'm happy.

Really cost effective option, October 11, 2011
By chride

I started to research rear racks for my cruiser, and this is by far the most inexpensive. It looks great, and the fit is perfect. The instructions for installation are available on the Wald website, but we only needed a cursory glance at them. We did have to buy a separate bolt to attach it to the main frame, but, all in all, this is exactly what I wanted.

Good rack for hardtail if you know how to install it . . ., October 6, 2011
By floodmouse (Michigan, USA)
|
|
I took a chance on this rack because the price was low. I liked it better than the brand I had before. However, it comes with no instructions. I knew from past experience how to mount the rack on my hardtail mountain bike (standard 26" mail order bike with no special features). This rack is perfect if your bike has the hole drilled through the crosspiece for the mounting bracket. The other brand of rack I bought had double mounting brackets that go to each side of the seat post, and my bike is not made for that style so I had to improvise a rack mount using the seat post stay, which is a little unstable. I did break a nut when I overtightened it, but I have lots of nuts & bolts on hand that I bought a long time ago from the hardware store, so that was no problem. I recommend reinforcing the mount with plastic electricians' tie-downs that you buy at the hardware store. I am very happy with this rack and plan to buy more to put on my back-up cycles.

This product does not apply to most normal mountain bikes, if any. It's too short. But this is not mentioned at all on its spec. The seller is also very bad on returning policy. They won't cover full refund including shipping fee. That's one of my worst shopping experience. When I asked them to put that helpful info on their Amazon product page, they said they could not. Try to avoid this seller.

Difficult to figure out, doesn't fit, requires way too much rigging!, August 7, 2011
By wildflower_77 (denver, co)
|
|
I didn't really look at the reviews for this before I bought it, because I figured back racks are all the same. Well, I should have, because apparently I was wrong. The rack was a total pain to install, and didn't come with either instructions OR enough hardware to complete the job. After so much time spent trying to put it on my bike, and several trips to the hardware store to get enough parts to get it to actually fit on my bike, I looked at it today and realized that the flimsy extender piece will probably not even allow the rack to carry that much weight safely. Grrrrr! Unless you have a lot of time on your hands to waste or don't get frustrated easily, then I'd look for a different rack. This one's a really terrible piece of work.

American Classic, June 19, 2011

If you are looking for a rack for your restored 1968 Schwinn Varsity this is about perfect. The closer your ride is to that geometry the easier things will be. A Specialized Globe San Francisco would be a problem. Good chrome, sturdy, does the job. You will likely need to bend or trim the mounting hardware a bit to get everything aligned. A great deal for the money.

Nice but could be better, June 19, 2011
By travelbuddy (New York, NY United States)
|
|
This is a nice looking rack, looks great with my Motobecane Jubilee Deluxe. There were a couple of minor problems with the item.
1) The mounting instructions were missing. Seems trivial but I had to look at pictures here to figure out how it is mounted.
2) The screws and bolts provided were too short.
3) The reflector mount was not thick enough to mount all kinds of reflectors. Mounted one, but it fit loosely, and had to swap out for another.
After spending way too much time fiddling with this, I finally took the bike and rack to a local bicycle store and paid $5 for them to install, with the proper screws. All in all I am quite happy with the fit and finish.

More than you'd expect for the $$$, June 11, 2011
By Brian A. Canning
|
|
I was going to buy a Tubus, but I couldn't muster the $120. All the budget racks are made of terribly flimsy aluminum, which does not handle weight stress well (will degrade quickly overtime, becoming less strong). Those seemed like a total waste of time and money.
I was skeptical about this rack, being that its about $15, but how much more should this much metal run? It is definitely an economy model. No fancy springs, no extra bars to help mount panniers or protect wheels, no seat stay mounts, and its not made of lightweight hollow tubing (but still really was less heavy than expected). It is however a perfectly serviceable rack, made in the USA, that seems acceptably stiff and supportive. What more do you need?
It is definitely spot-brazed (or so it seems) together, but I don't really question the durability as the joints are very nicely lined up and look even. And if one joint should fail, it should be easy to repair.
I have yet to run this rack through the ringer, touring with weight, and will certainly make another review if it fails me. But I have high hopes for it. And if it does fail, whats 15 bucks in the world of overpriced bike equipment?
They have no published weight limit, possibly because the limits are inconsistent? I personally think that the weight limits are stressed on racks mostly because aluminum should really not be abused past a certain point. This steel should be just fine I think!
Oh and I did fit it to a 700c bike, for anybody who's wondering if it's possible.

More trouble than its worth -- Only fits certain bikes!, April 26, 2011
By Lisa (San Jose, CA. USA)
|
|
I have to admit that this item looks lovely, but unfortunately it only fits certain bikes! First off, there's no instructions as to how to put on the rear bike rack on. Second, the screws provided were too short and wasn't able to fit in the holes properly, and third the mount didn't even reach the frame of the bike. I have a brand new old style commuter road bike (not a mountain bike), and bought this item hoping to make it look even better by installing the rear bike rack on, but I had lots of issues with it. I had to come up with many different creative ways in order to make this particular rear bike rack work, and even then I had to get new screws and a new mount from Home Depot, or at Orchard Supply. There should be some type of disclaimer on the item sold here stating that it only fits certain bikes, rather than the information stated on the reviews. It still works for my bike, but like I mentioned before I had to go through a lot of trouble since I put money into buying this item already. I'm sad to give this a bad review, but unfortunately it was a lot more trouble than its worth.
If you have a bike frame that would fit this rear bike rack, then by all means go for it. Just make sure that its the proper rear bike rack for your bike frame, since the mount might be too short.

The only one that worked for me..., April 11, 2011
By envioEngineer

I have an old Nishiki road bike- from the 80s or so- and I looked everywhere to find a bike rack that would fit on it. This one is perfect! I didn't have to change a thing on my bike to install it. All I did was move the reflector and everything was perfect. I've been using it for over a month now and I have had no problems with it. I use it almost every day to carry books, groceries, climbing gear, you name it (I have saddle bags on it) and it functions perfectly. Highly recommended.

Great cargo rack!, January 28, 2011
By Redleg
|

This rack was very easy to mount and is extremely strong and sturdy. I ordered the rack on Tuesday night and got it in the mail on Friday morning- great service from Niagara!! It couldn't have been easier to mount, I took the fender stay bolts loose and attached the rack legs, then I took the brake caliper bolt loose and mounted the rack stay bracket. I had to slightly bend the bracket to match the angle of the rack, but other than that it dropped right on as though it was a factory part. My total time for installation was about 10 minutes, most of that time I spent getting the bike's fender lined up straight before tightening down the bolts. The rack is very strong, my son can ride on it and it doesn't wobble in the least. Very nice USA made part that looks great on my bike.

A Rack that Clears 27" Wheels!, January 13, 2011
By The Brain
|
|
I ride a Univega Viva Sport, manufactured sometime in the 1980's. It has 27" wheels, which, being a bit bigger than 700c's, I was worried about. Fortunately, this rack clears the wheel with space to spare. Importantly, it came with the hardware which is sold separately on Amazon! Furthermore, there is a nice bracket where I can attach my rear reflector. It seems sturdily made; I would guess the weakest points are at the hardware.
The downside? My bike has a 52cm frame, and the provided bracket was slightly too long to mount it easily. That said, all it took was a little creativity to get it right. It does look like you're short on screws at first glance, but the three that the manufacturer provides suffice if your bike has holes and screws in the right places (you might need a trip to your local bike shop or hardware store if it doesn't).

Just right, December 31, 2010
By Kira Bennett (Chicago, IL United States)

Fine, solid rear rack. Came with all the hardware needed to attach it to my older bike (it mounts to the brakes, rather than to the frame). It didn't come with instructions, but it was intuitive enough not to matter. I just used a standard screwdriver for the rack hardware, and a hex wrench for my bike's brakes.

SO many complaints and frustrations..., December 29, 2010
By online shopper (Philadelphia, PA)
|
|
First of all, the product description on this site doesn't really specify what type of bike is preferable for this rack. My husband has a 26 inch, mountain bike, and the rack doesn't fit on his bike.
Second of all, the product arrives without a single word of instructions. I searched on-line to find the most ambiguous, confusing, and useless instructions ever written on the manufacturer's web-site.
Needless to say, I returned this product.
The only positive thing I can say about this product is that it is much stronger than the bike rack my husband ended up buying (which I'm expecting will snap in two any day now).

Nice looking and solid, November 3, 2010
By Niamiah (NY)

I love this rack. I bought this for my old Schwinn. The crome color really goes with the crome handlebars and fenders. It's very sturdy, too. There's one review out there that says it's too flimsy. WHAT?! I've put 80 lbs on this thing, and the only thing that was flimsy was my rear tire! The rack won't buge. Another review said that the monting hardware was outdated. Yes, the little screws included are maybe too small for some people, but outdated? That's a little bit of a stretch! Remember, I put 80 lbs on this rack, and those little screws didn't buge. Size is a little iffy, however. My 1975 Schwinn Breeze has a deticated hole in its frame for a rack, which ment the rack fit on my 26" wheel fine. But don't you try to attach this to your rear axle! With a 26" wheele, it won't fit. Accualy, it wouldn't fit on an axle anyways. Remember the little screws? The holes for the screws are very small. Most bikes have deticated holes in there frames for racks anyways, so it doesn't really matter.

rear bike rack, September 6, 2010
By Crusinfool

OK for the price. I wouldn't trust it with a big load, but fine to hold a jacket, lunch box, gym bag, etc. The foreward bracket is very soft steel and will distort under med-heavy weight. Will require some CAREFUL bending to fit over wide, cruiser type fenders.

Nice, sturdy rack, August 14, 2010

Nice rack, sturdy. It was easy to mount. One of the nuts and bolts provided must have gotten lost, so I had to find a similar one which delayed me from putting it on the bike a little. I wish they would include an extra one. Overall, very happy with the rack.

well made rack., July 23, 2010
By computer geek (Grandville, Michigan, US)

This quality rack took a little time to put on a 90s mountain bike. after a half hour or so I figured how I was going to attach it. The rack was build so you could put it on 2 ways. The way that worked for me was to use the raised end in the back of the bike. First disconnect the centerpull brake wire then reconnect it through the steel mesh of the rack. This way it is straight and strong. This worked for me perfectly !!!

Good solid rack, June 28, 2010
By fenton
|
|
This rack is good and solid once mounted. It does not sway side to side and supports a lot of weight. But don't expect to mount it in 10 minutes. It may require some modification, as was the case in my situation. I had to drill new holes slightly higher than the ones provided, and had to bend the front mounting tab a little to get it to affix to the center pull brake bolt. I also had to grind the tab at the end of the right vertical support to get it to fit my old 27" Fuji road bike. It took me about 45 minutes to install, and I have plenty of tools. All in all, though, a great rack for the money.

By NKos (Ames, IA United States)

Nice product; works as advertised. Use it to support two side baskets for carting my stuff to work and does well for that purpose. Only complaint is that might need to get a lock washer as my riding takes me over some bumpy paved roads and the screw/nut holding the support to my bike began to loosen, but after screwing down with a lock washer in place I haven't had any issues since then.

Not bad for my first rear bike rack purchase!, May 27, 2010
By Jess (Goodyear, AZ USA)
|
|
I bought this rack for my Sea Breeze beach cruiser, which was a gift from a friend, being that I hadn't owned a bike since I was 14 years old, I had no expectations of the rear rack. The legs of the rack were a bit too short, especially with the fenders I have over the tires, however, my husband was able to push it down far enough and bend them slightly inward in order to secure them in place. The shiny chrome of the rack goes perfectly with the shiny chrome of my fenders and basket, so the entire bike comes together beautifully and gives it a real classic look! It's a snug fit, but now I'm ready to ride!

bike rack, February 6, 2010
By hikers1660 (Bowling Green, KY USA)

This rack was the least priced I could find, and I found the quality to be every bit as good as what I would expect from the most expensive one I could have found. It was exactly what I wanted, with the quality to handle the load for which it was purchased. I would definitely purchase more products of this nature from this source in the future.

Great for any cruiser!!!, May 1, 2009
By houseofreggae (Missoula, MT - USA)

Nice quality rack, very sturdy! Installed on a Kulana Moon Dog cruiser with no problems. Did order the extra hardware kit from another listing, just in case and I'm glad I did. My rack came with the exact same kit included, but newer cruisers [like mine] need a little extra fabrication to mount everything securly and level. Made a few bends to hardware brackets and bolted the two together to span the gap on my bike from fender mount to rack. Just some simple garage engineering and now I have a super strong steel rack that adds so much more to the retro style of my cruiser. LOOKS GREAT!!!

solid frame but doesn't fit my bike, April 2, 2009
By J. OConnor (Orangevale, CA)
|
|
I got this rack for my daughter's Schwinn Roxie Cruiser. All hardware came with the bike but there were no instructions. I didn't need the instructions but like the other reviewers said, the main anchor bracket is too short to be used at all on this bike. The very small holes on the legs of the rack were too small to be used with the existing screws on the bike. I should have read the reviews before I bought this, I wouldn't have bought this one.

Good rack...not so good hardware., June 18, 2008
By Neil

|
I purchased this rack along with the recommended hardware and all I can say is that it was useless to get it. It already came with a set (accident?). The nuts and bolts that it did come with were way to short for them to work on my Schwinn mountain bike. I am going to have to go to the hardware store to purchase 3 new nuts and bolts to make it work. Installation was pretty straightforward after figuring out what direction the bike rack was suppose to face. I would purchase again, just without the hardware pack.

This bike rack came about a week after purchasing. It was easy to install, although we didn't realize you have to buy the bolts and screws separately. Luckily we had some laying around but if you don't they sell the hardware separately (or maybe they sell a set, too. Just know if you only buy the rack you're only getting the rack.)

Wald Rear Mount Bicycle Mount worth the effort, September 1, 2011
By Larry
|
|
This is a great product...but it takes a couple steps to install and there are no instructions. I installed it on a 26" mountain bike 18 speed I just bought from Wally World. Here is some info you might find helpful. 1st remove the top bolt that holds the cage on for the rear derailler (mine was a 6mm 1.0) check to see if it will fit the same hole on the other side of the rear forks. If it does then you need to buy another one about 1/4" longer from Home Depot you also may need a 1/4" bolt about 1 1/4" long with a nut to fit. Now take the bolt and see if it fits through the bottom mounting hole on the rack mine was a little too small, I then drilled out the hole with a bit just larger than the bolt to enlarge it (less than 2 mins if you have a drill). Now use the new bolt you bought for the hole with the derailler cage and the old one for the other side along with the forks of the rack, do not completely tighten them yet. Now use one of the machine screws and a nut that came in the rack to attach the bar that came in the hardware package (There is only one). If your bike has the the old brakes that mount to the crossbar remove the brake assembly add the front mounting bar and bolt the assembly back together. Tighten everything and your done, the fit and look was perfect and very strong. I will be putting one on my girlfriends bike this weekend. I would have given it the 5 stars if it had had instructions and better hardware. Not counting the drive to HD the installation took less the 10 mins. Happy Riding

Solid, September 14, 2011
By RaynerHenrik

This bike rack is pretty good, very solid in design and is made for weight. However the hardware they provide with it may or may not work, but that's as easy as going to a hardware store and finding what you want to use as bolts. other than the hardware issue it's a great product that WORKS, you can put something on it and not have to worry about the rack flexing, also there's no rattling. For the price its a great buy, but don't let the hardware issue stop you! If you can't figure it out yourself ask someone to help you, personally I would regret buying something more expensive that doesn't hold up than taking the time to make a perfectly good bike rack work.

Will give it another chance, May 23, 2012

-1 star for arriving damaged, with a large dent stripping the chrome and exposing the black metal. Will have to return it.
-1 star for not coming with all of the necessary parts (ie screw & bolt for the bracket).
-1 star for not including any instructions.
It fits my bike so I'll exchange it and see if it works, but I'm sure there are better racks out there.

Engineers - apply within, January 31, 2012
By Iguanian (Indianapolis, IN)
|

This piece was a bit tricky and took me about 30 minutes to install. Lack of instructions certainly didn't help, but the biggest issue was figuring out what went where.
Once I decided how the pieces were supposed to fit together, and how that was likely to actually play out on my bike, it went together pretty quickly. It wasn't an exact fit, but with things screwed down I am not worried about it falling off before the frame of the bike fails.
You will probably need an additional bolt and nut to attach it to your seat post, so be aware of that. The two bolts that secure the bottom to the frame do look like they will hit the sprocket at first, but there is a quarter inch gap, so it seems to be fine.
The only improvement I would suggest is some tabs on the rack itself to provide additional places to attach bungie cords, locks, flowers, whatever. As it is, it is a secure platform to build on, but is not a carrying mechanism in itself. As a bonus, if you want to use a detachable fender/mudguard on the back, there is *exactly* enough room to put that on and still clear the top of the rack (you will not however be able to put anything on the rack while you are doing so).

Apparently, a "hit or miss" product, January 1, 2012
By Atomic Grrrrrl (Brooklyn, NY USA)
|
|
I bought the Wald #215 Rear Mount Bicycle Rack to fit onto my 2nd Ladies 26" Schwinn Ranger. As soon as I opened the box I knew I was in for some hurting. There was no diagram or set of instructions and the bag that was supposed to contain hardware had been torn open and was missing nuts and bolts. After informing Niagara of the missing hardware, I was sent them immediately hoping the missing hardware wasn't a fluke. Well, it was and it wasn't. Yes, this set is supposed to come with a set of small screws to connect the rack to the bracket and the eyelets. But it doesn't come with the much needed larger bolt to complete the assembly.
This doesn't sound like much of a big deal, but if you're a good distance away from from a decent hardware store or bike shop, it's an unbelievable hassle. It's also irritating in principle-- why make customers search hill and dale for a measly little bolt and nut when it could've just included it as part of the set and charged an extra 50 cents to cover the cost? What customer wouldn't gladly pay that much to avoid the trouble?
At any rate, after a day or so, I found a nut and bolt. But when I tried assembling the bike it turned out that the search had been for nought. The rack doesn't fit because of the angle of the bracket. To get it to "work" I would've had to install the rack at a steep angle or use brute force to attach the bracket to the rack. Frankly, I didn't want to take the chance (I could just see the strain causing damage to the frame or the tiny screws popping loose). So I gave up on the rack entirely and am looking into something else.
Now you'll notice that some people have posted rave reviews of this rack. You may have success with it, but then again you may not. This is because it seems to be a classic "hit or miss" product; you just won't know how it'll work out until you get it. If it works out for you, great; if it doesn't, you'll wind up eating the costs since it'll be too much trouble returning. Because of that I wouldn't recommend taking the chance.
