3.0 out of 5 stars.  once installed, the baskets are great, October 25, 2008
By book reader (Austin, TX)
i got these baskets off craigslist but these are exactly what i have, with all the same parts.

The biggest issue for me was successfully installing the baskets onto my bike. maybe if i wasn't just a regular ol commuter but a bike tech, or superman, i'd be able to get them on. i have an 18.5" Jamis commuter. the main problem is not the "legs" that attach near the wheel, but attaching the parts at the bottom of the seatpost. it has so far been impossible because once attached, the attachment prevents the back brakes from functioning. in the process of trying to attach, i've scratched up some paint on my bike.

i went to a local bike shop and someone there thankfully devised a solution for $5. i love the baskets!

thus, while i recommend the baskets, you should know that depending on your bike, you might run into a little trouble installing

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Very nice, but will require some effort to install, August 26, 2009
By Virgilio (Detroit, Michigan)
This is a very high-quality piece made out of heavy steel wire, with great welds and zinc plating. It looks very sturdy and should support plenty of weight. It's also made in the USA, which is another bonus. However, this basket will require some time and effort effort to mount on most mountain bikes. If I didn't have a nice collection of fasteners, a power drill, and the tools required to cut bolts to size I probably would not have been able to mount this on my bike. It doesn't just bolt on and you shouldn't expect it to. I'm guessing it would work much better if you had the old-school cruiser style bike with fenders and chrome.

This is a quality product, but you might have to use some ingenuity when it comes to getting it on your bike.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Perfect for newspaper carriers!, April 14, 2010
By snotbottom (Oregon, USA)
I bought this for my wife's new bike. She delivers newspapers and was having a difficult time carrying all of her papers and as a result would have to make more than one trip to finish her route. Now she can do it all in one trip and the papers stay bundled. Having the baskets to the sides keeps the center of gravity down lower so the bike is more stable.

Installation was a snap and the baskets (and the goods inside) stay completely secure.

UPDATE:
Just to let you all know how it holds up over time... Two summers of daily use and still in excellent shape.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Bike Basket, December 27, 2009
By Robert Campbell (Huntington Beach, CA)
Bought this basket for my wife as I did not have to buy a rear rack to attach it to. The rack is integrated. Many people complain about difficulty in assembly. The basket does not come with instructions but if you look at how the hardware will attach to the basket and not to the bicycle then it is easy to attach. Assembly only took 10 minutes. My wife just loves it!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Product. Takes a little effort to install., October 3, 2008

The basket's material is solid and attractive. The only downside is that it takes a bit of work to bend the linking arms to fit onto the bike. Overall, this basket comes recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  great baskets, June 10, 2011
By John
Fit my Schwinn Landmark cruiser bike perfectly. I had to get four 6mm bolts at the hardware store to fit my bike, but that's not the seller's fault, no biggie. I'm mechanically inclined, so the lack of instructions was not an issue for me. Just put them on the bike and you will see where holes line up and where the bolts need to go. The baskets really make the bike more functional as a grocery hauler now.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Better than expected, April 7, 2011
By Lexi
The pictures don't do the basket justice. I was a little worried about the quality when I ordered it, but while reading various bike blogs the name 'Wald' kept coming up always attached to assurances of quality. The images didn't reassure me and the price made me uncertain but I purchased the basket anyway and I'm very glad that I did.

The box arrived pretty banged up with poor packaging but the baskets were in top condition. My husband and I installed them on my Huffy cranbrook cruiser with only a little bit of difficulty on the chain side. Eventually I stuck the nut a piece of tape and held it in place while my husband got the screw aligned and tightened it up. We had to take the seat off to install the brackets that attach to the back of the bike but that was mostly because of some awkward angles and the fact we didn't have any needle nosed pliers, just a pair of blunt noses and a flat head screwdriver.

A word of caution: if you have painted fenders lay a towel over them before you start installing the baskets. My fenders are now scuffed up from the metal rubbing against the paint as we shifted the baskets around for the best fit. Doesn't rate detracting a star as it was our own fault for lack of foresight.

Once installed the baskets are quite solid, much more so than I thought they would be. I would pay $30 again for these baskets I'm quite happy with them. If the Wald rack (sans baskets) is the same quality as the ones I bought I would be perfectly confident that a friend could hop onto the back for me to pedal around in the dutch style.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Basket!, June 10, 2011
By Charles A. Livengood (Alexandria, VA USA)
I bought this basket to replace a folding Bell basket that I bought at a leading discount store. That basket was very flimsy and got destroyed the first time I used it (I put two half gallons of milk in it and rode a mile home from the store). When I got home, the cheap hardware holding the basket together was all bent up.

This Wald basket, on the other hand, is very sturdy and roomy. I carried two gallons of milk, plus other smaller groceries with no problem. I had no problem installing it on my bike, either, as some other reviewers indicate they did. I highly recommend this basket.

Amazon also had the best price around.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  great rack for city riding, June 22, 2011
By Sara Brewer (West Hollywood, CA, US)
I love my new rack! As other reviewers said, it takes a bit of figuring to get it on. It took me about an hour, but I got it on my Nirve cruiser so that it is not touching the back fender and it is very sturdy. This is a nice solid metal rack. I can carry two large grocery bags in the side baskets and bungee a 12-pack can of soda on the rack part. Perfect for our quick trips to Target or the grocery store. :) Great city rack...I live in Los Angeles.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Finally I can use my bike to bring back something :), February 6, 2011
By Great rack and baskets
Very well built rack/basket, I bought the medium size because the small is too small and the big is "too big" and makes it harder to mount and dismount your bike (they stick out in the back of bike). They are excellent for grocery shopping, going to school and of course, great if you go fishing or camping on your bicycle, you can haul all your gear :)

I had to bend the end of it using a vise and make it fit the bike, and had to buy seatpost clamp with rack adapter (cost $10), and it did fit perfectly :)

This baskets are excellent if you want to utilize your bike to its fullest potential. They don't rattle and very sturdy. If you hauling only books and laptop, go with the smallest size, otherwise do the medium. I will give it 5 starts.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great rack and basket, once installed, January 15, 2011
By windracer (Seminole, FL USA)
I agree with the other reviewers here: this is great rack/basket combination. Very sturdy and good looking (although I was surprised it came bare in the Amazon box without any Wald packaging or instructions). The hardest part was getting it installed on my wife's comfort cruiser. Her bike has a non-standard frame so where a normal bike would have the two rear seat stay tubes come up and connect underneath the seat, hers has a big shock absorber spring instead. So I had to futz around a lot trying to get the main bracket to connect securely without interfering with her rear brake assembly. It took some doing (I finally had to have a second person help to hold the basket in place while I tightened the bolts) and I scratched some of the paint, but now that it's installed it looks great and works great too. If you have a standard frame bike, installation should be pretty easy.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Addition To Any Bike!!, November 11, 2010
By Shavuotis
I own an electrified Schwinn Point Beach cruiser bike. The rack that holds my 36v battery pack broke at the welds and I needed a replacement immediately. The 520 rack works great!! I keep my batteries inside a plastic ammo box attached to the top rack and it holds everything securely. I still have room for what ever I need to haul. My bike needed no modifications. It just took a little time to figure out how I wanted to attach everything. My town has brick streets and even on that rough surface, there is no rattle from the rack. I use my bike for travel to and from work and general errands around town and I can tell you that this is a wonderful addition for anyone who uses their bike for more than just occasional riding. It turns your bike into a real hauler and will pay for itself with the fuel consumption, wear and tear etc. saved by not using your car as much. A well made product and Highly Recommended!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Just What I Needed, September 16, 2010
By Beej_-121 (St Charles, IL, US)
I bought this a few months ago, and I couldn't be more pleased with it. Construction is heavy duty, baskets are nice & deep, and a great value for the price. I had to modify the install a bit with some extra hardware, but that's to be expected as bikes very so much in size & style, there's no way to get a basket to fit them all. I would definitely recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Wald 520 Rear Bicycle Basket, August 29, 2010
By chocolate_momster (Glendale, AZ, USA)
We purchased this bike basket for our 11 year old daughter who rides her bike to school. Our school banned backpacks for 6-8 grades so we came up with this idea for her to transport her stuff. She loves it! She can dump her lunch box, big zippered binder, and a water bottle into the baskets with no problem. There's even extra room for taking p.e. clothes and extra books.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Basket Review, August 9, 2010
By bgaines
I love this basket..I have it placed on the back of '65 schwinn collegiate. It was very easy to assemble though I had to go buy the wrench tool required to do so (found at my local family dollar). However, I do believe it is necessary to have a rear fender for this basket to have better support. The basket easily supports my purse, mulitple pairs of shoes, 2 reuseable bags of groceries, and I've even got a gallon of milk to fit. Whatever the case, I think a basket it just an overall necessity for anyone who likes to bike in general.Overall, it was definitely a great purchase and addition for me this summer!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Well made, installed well on fat tired Cruiser, July 24, 2010
By GROG (Cape Fear)
This basket is very well made, and was fairly easy to install. I installed this on a Huffy Cranbrook cruiser. The lower mounting arms have large and small holes that allow flexibility in mounting. I used the small holes as I had retrofitted a 3-speed coaster brake rear hub, so it was easier not to use the axle nuts to mount the basket. With the rear wheel installed it was a little tricky getting the lower mount bolts in place with my fat fingers. I had no problem with the upper mount. I ended up with the upper mount down on the fender upper mount.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Very useful accessory., June 2, 2010
By Mark Miller
Despite what some others have said this basket works fine on a multi-gear bike. You just need a shorter screw for the attachment point down by the gears, which you can get at any hardware store. And for most newer bikes you'll want to use the bracket attachment under the seat even if your bike has the screw holes in the frame. The attachment bars curve out a couple inches from the screw holes and touch against the brake cable without it. The bars are meant to go over the bracket on the outside, but we moved it over so that both bars attached on the side away from the brake cable. This wasn't absolutely necessary but I wanted a little more clearance.

By L. Butler (ri)
this basket is great, just what we were looking for. wanted something for our tandem bike- big enough to hold things like a backpack, beach towels, water bottles, and other various items without being too heavy and bulky. wasn't sure which size to get, went with the middle one, and it's perfect. my husband had no problems setting it up. i was a little worried that my heels would bang into it while peddling, but he was able to finagle it so that i have an inch or two of clearance room. recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Perfect fit, April 5, 2012
By goblinbox (Walla Walla, WA US)
After reading the reviews, I was concerned I'd have to enlist someone's help with modifying this product to fit my bike, but luckily it turned out that my 80's Murray women's mountain bike is pretty much the poster bike for this product. The baskets installed easily with just a couple of ratchets and a screwdriver, and nothing needed to be modified. Six bolts and you're done.

I do wish the manufacturer had included an installation diagram, though. (I really don't know if the under-seat bracket pieces should be curved in toward each other, out and away, or in the same direction.) (I guess it doesn't really matter, though, as long as the basket doesn't fall off!)

Note that if you've been riding your bike basket-less for awhile, you'll probably be surprised by how heavy it seems once the carrier basket is installed. It's not a deal-breaker because I like the sturdiness of this product, but everything seemed uphill during that maiden ride.

Another tip is to move your taillight before installing the basket! I'll have to remove the braces to change my taillight battery.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Not THAT hard to install... If you think about it for a minute, March 29, 2012
By Robert Ballerstedt
First of all, I hate to see a good product tarnished by some bad reviews because some half wit can't spend 5 minutes trying to ummm FIGURE IT OUT ON THEIR OWN. The assembly is simple, almost fool proof. No wonder India and China are gladly taking any job that requires any sort of critical spatial thinking. But that's a story for another day. A few notes, and even a sarcastic but helpful link for some of the people struggling out there:

1. Seriously, try and figure it out before complaining on Amazon. If youre still stuck, well, gosh, maybe someone at Wald thought of that and put some instructions online.... Hmmmmm.... If only there was a way to use some sort of... computational ENGINE.... to SEARCH..... The WEB for some instructions! Holy crap someone already invented that? [...] I found this .PDF to be particularly useful: [...]

2. The product itself is quite nice, especially for the price. I happen to work in an industry where wire formed products are quite common (consumer goods, ie shower caddies and the like. Exciting, I know!) and for the amount of wire, welds, and most importantly, the quality of the plating (which is crucial for rust protection) are all top notch. The nuts are actually nylon locking. The bolts are not stainless steel, but I upgraded at Lowes for like $2.

3. Lastly, the baskets are 12.5" by 10" by 4.5" at the bottom and taper out towards the top. Plenty big for most items.

I am pleased with my purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Perfect for Errands, February 8, 2012
By sigs (Colorado)
I use these baskets for riding to work (with my laptop in one side and my lunch in the other) as well as other errands like picking up books from the library. I like that you can use the area on top of the wheel as well for carrying items. I bought a bungee cord to keep things steady on top of the baskets as well as to keep things from bouncing out of the baskets on bumpy roads. I would recommend these to everyone. They really are a great size!

3.0 out of 5 stars.  heel scraper, December 2, 2011
By Chad Greene
This is a good rack, if it works on your bike. I have a Univega Sport Tandem, which could be the cause of my problems, but I think the rear triangle has somewhat standard geometry for a mountain bike. Upon installation, I was disappointed to find that it interferes with my feet when I pedal. Essentially, the support arms that attach to the seat post are about 4 inches too short. I had to jury rig it with scrap metal and wire to extend the support arms. So, it took a couple of hours to get it on and stable, but now it's sturdy, it doesn't interfere with my pedal stroke, and it's looks pretty adorable on my tandem bike.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great quality and precision, November 11, 2011
By Neal (Bloomington, MN USA)
After reading about the installation problems of some other buyers I was wondering how it would fit on my 1984 German made bicycle. I am impressed with how this fit onto my bicycle with all of the fastening points lining up to the original brazed on original points on my bike. It is as if my bike was modeled to build this basket. Even the extra holes for the (not needed) axle lined up perfectly to allow the existing fender clamp bolts through. This basket is well designed and manufactured and appears as though it will give me years of service. It arrived just 5 days after I ordered it with standard shipping.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Baskets, Poor Connecting Hardware, November 2, 2011
By Muttnjeff
The baskets are strong and well designed. The connecting hardware is not usable on my hybrid bicycle. I ended up buying a $7.00 threaded and rubber covered U bracket at a bicycle store that was worth about $2.00. It connects to the tube that supports the seat and allowed me to connect to the basket hardware. But my heels hit the front of the baskets as I pedaled. So I built a 5 inch long by 3 inch wide box of ¾" steel strap that is attached to the U bracket under the seat tube and to the front of the purchased baskets over the rear wheel. Now my heels don't hit the baskets. What I wished I had found was a bracket that is designed to fit around the seat tube. The U bracket I am using is bending one side of the 5 inch box around the seat tube. The installation is quite strong but bent metal fixes are not as elegant.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Difficult to install, but very nice baskets overall, October 23, 2011
By JimmyKeepCool (USA)
Like the other reviews have said, this product does not come with instructions. The instructions can be found on the Wald website, but they are not very good instructions. It took me two tries to get the baskets properly on my bike (the first time a screw fell out in the middle of my ride). But, with some zip ties and a bit of creativity you can get them to work. Once installed, these baskets are really nice to have. They do not add to much weight, but can hold a lot of stuff (for instance, my backpack, lunch, and 2 textbooks).

I cannot begin to tell you how happy I am with this purchase! I have a 1973 Schwinn Breeze that this basket now lives on; no modifications neccesary what so ever! I believe it took me all of 5 minutes to install, with just an adjustable wrench and a screw driver. The basket size is perfect for books from the library, or two smallish bags from the grocery store. Also, it only took two days (free shipping) to arrive at my home. Best amazon purchase so far!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Clamps were no good, September 23, 2011
By Charles Nebenzahl
It's a great, sturdy basket but the clamps to secure it to the seat post are spaced 1" apart. On most bikes, that's too little. After a lot of experimenting with different ideas, we used a u-clamp instead of the neck clamp that came with the basket, and secured it to the basket clamp with electric ties, and it was very secure.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Awesome baskets, tricky installation, September 19, 2011
By Lauren (Pittsburgh, PA United States)
Size-wise and funtion-wise, these baskets were exactly what I was looking for. I teach at a school close to my house, and I wanted to save on gas by riding my bike. I carry my manuals, which are bigger than standard 3-ring binders, and other materials, in tote bags. I also needed a place to shove a lightweight jacket, my purse, my U-shaped lock, and other small items. These baskets hold all my things perfectly and I like that there don't have closures of any kind too - I can just throw my stuff in and not mess with any snaps, while still not worrying about anything falling out. The top rack part could hold something strapped onto it, but I haven't tried that yet. This is a perfect basket for carrying small purchases or farmers market items, etc.

The only issue was installing them - like other reviewers, it took about an hour. There were no installation instructions, and we had to bend the metal to make it fit on the holes.

Great value!

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Somewhat problematic..., August 25, 2011
By M. Lindberg (Atlanta, GA)
I had exactly the same problem as gergelim38: once attached to the posts underneath the seat, the basket hindered the back brakes. Basically, only one side of the rear brakes were able to press on the wheel, which ultimately caused it become untrue quite regularly. I devised my own solution, but it just broke this morning on the way to work. What was the solution your LBS created for you, gergelim? Has anyone else found a fix? Thanks.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Missing Hardware, August 5, 2011
By Sherri Hurd (LOUISVILLE, KY, US)
I received my package in a timely manner. But, to my surprise when I opened the box I the hardware package was torn and I had two bolts and 3 nuts. The bolts were different sizes and I had to make a trip to the hardware store to get more nuts and bolts. Also, the package had no instructions or diagrams. I am pretty smart and figured it out, but the reassurance of a diagram showing the finished product on a bicycle would be nice.

Bought these baskets on sale from Amazon through a bicycle shop in Niagra. They were easy to put on and their chrome finish is very becomming. I love using them to go to the store or for my gym bag when I change to cycle home from work.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good Quality, December 21, 2008

This item was shipped on time, and is of very good quality. Not thin or bendable but very sturdy. I would order it again.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Very nearly useless - misleading dimensions, May 21, 2012
By David Ogorman (Gainesville, Florida)
Unlike the other reviewers I had no major difficulties installing these bike baskets -- perhaps because my bike already had a luggage rack with the same mounting holes, so all I had to do was remove four bolts, take the luggage rack off, position the baskets and re-seat the bolts. (Even so it would have been easier with a second person to steady the baskets while I was finger-tightening the bolts, but that's my bad for not seeking assistance.)

No, the real problem I have with this product is that the quoted dimensions are completely misleading. The baskets taper both from front to back and from side to side, and at all events aren't remotely 11-inches deep, even from the most generous exterior perspective. The true dimensions on these baskets are more like 11x10x4, at least if you want something rigid to go inside (like a watertight storage tub), and sit snugly on the bottom. And if you haven't tried to find a plastic storage container that is 11x10x4, let me spare you the trouble: There aren't any. The dinkiest plastic boxes at my local big-box retailer are 4-3/4 inches deep.

As a result, these bike baskets are -- in addition to always being a lot smaller than advertised -- completely useless to me on any day that there is even the remotest chance of rain. And since I live in Florida, that makes them very nearly completely useless. I would happily have returned them, except that after two days of trying to talk myself into liking them, all the chrome flaked off. ...And I don't even have the energy to write anymore about *that*.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Handy Work, May 4, 2012
By thecrimsonlemon
Had to modify it for my bike ,the bolts that come with it were not long enough and had to drill holes in brackets to fit my bike frame.Might need some handy work to fit your bike but other than that the basket is great.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Very easy to install, April 20, 2012
By Monty Jones
I installed this on my Schwinn Breeze in about a half hour. The basket does seem made for a cruiser, however, I can see how the design is very inflexible and could be hard to install on other types of bikes. The basket is sturdy without a lot of lateral movement, and the baskets are very deep. However, the bottom of the basket is smaller than the top, so it holds a little less than you might think. Not a negative, just something to be aware of. I'm very happy with this basket, much better than wearing my backpack to the grocery store!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  good product, tricky install, October 19, 2011
By sped
I purchased these baskets so that I could schlep all my stuff when I started commuting to work on my bike. The price was great, the baskets are very sturdy. It took my husband a while to figure out how to install it on my hybrid bike. He ultimately bent the front prongs a bit to fit them under the seat and ended up having to use zip ties to attach the bottom to the axle. Even with the jerry-rigged install they are very sturdy, don't rattle at all and fit most of my stuff when I don't have to bring everything but the kitchen sink! I am very pleased with this purchase!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice addition for the grocery store, October 7, 2011
By scarpie
Let me start by saying I purchased the wald 135 front basket a few months ago and I couldn't live without it!My only issue is I would have to limit what items to buy because of cargo limitations.I took the leap and ordered the wald 520 rear twin.It arrived last night 2 hours before sunset and I was determined to make a grocery run with it before dark. The packaging was perfect.I had read countless reviews about the frustration of proper fit and lack of instructions.I'd like to say this was a fun project for me.As more than 1 reviewer mentioned I had to bend the upper seatstay mounts for proper fit(I used a 10" pair of channellock pliers.I wrapped a piece of duct tape over jaws so I wouldn't scratch the surface.worked like a dream. My frame is equipped with seatstay bosses(screws)so I didn't need the seatstay bracket. Now that I had the seatstay end of It mounted I moved to the rear dropout. There are 3 mount points on the bracket.I realized I had to custom fit this by cutting off the last large mounting hole.I used a pair of linesman pliers and a belt sander for a factory finish.Another reviewer mentioned the screws to mount the lower bracket were to long.To solve that I threaded a nylon locking nut(provided)over the screw first.that will shorten the screw by the diameter of the nut and keep the screw out of the rear cassette.Again,I love to "putter" and this project was a joy for me.The basket is beautiful and I made it to the grocery store before dark.I love my bike :)

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great baskets! Awful Installation!, October 3, 2011
By Jenn (Raleigh, NC United States)
These baskets are great. Can hold $30 groceries. Or a bunch of library books. The baskets are narrowed at the bottom than I thought they'd be though. They didn't come with any instructions for installation (just a little plastic bag of screws and a bracket that I didn't end up using on my bike).
Here is the website with some badly-written instructions: [...]
They do NOT go on easily. I had to find longer screws to get them installed well. But they are secure now. The baskets are not flimsy and do not rattle on the bike. But one of the screws interfers with my highest gear. Also, occasionally the heel of my shoe hits against the basket as I'm peddling.
If you can make it past the terrible installation and lack of instructions and have some imagination about how to attach them to your bike securely, then but them. The price is good for what you get. If you have trouble operating a screwdriver, you might want to go to a bike shop for help.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Useful and stable, October 3, 2011
By Jesterboomer (Tiburon, CA)
Took a little while to get this mounted and required a little bending to fit the mounting holes existing on the bike frame. It comes with a clamp but, a) it was not needed and b) it would not have fit my bike. Once on it is very stable. My bike seems to have the pedals set further back than most and if only my toes are on the pedal my heel can clip the basket. Handy for bicycling to the beach with towels, etc.
