Product Description:

The Hohner Steven Tyler Artist Series Harmonica--Sound Like a Rock Star

Steven Tyler Artist Series was developed side-by-side with Aerosmith's legendary rock harmonica master. This impressive reproduction of Steven Tyler's instrument-of-choice is tricked out with chrome plated reed plates, autographed black cover plates, and a black comb. From the first note you'll experience what it's like to look and sound like

Comes with a case and collectible blister pack.
a professional rock star with this easy-bending, quick-responding, and brilliant-sounding instrument. Available in just the key of A--the only key you and Steven will ever need.

All Steven, All the Time
The Steven Tyler Artist Series harmonica is ideal for any lover of rock and roll. The instrument is available in the key of "A" and features plated-brass reed plates, a plastic comb and laser engraved black covers. The black molded carrying case is imprinted with a custom "ST" logo designed by Steven Tyler himself. Packaged on a full-color blister card for safe keeping. You'll feel like a rock star with one of these harps in hand.

Sound and Feel
This is a harmonic that sounds good. Neither too brash nor too mellow, the low tone of the Steven Tyler Artist Series harmonica is ideal for rock and roll. Put this baby to your lips and blow--as soon as you do, you'll know that it feels as good as it looks. Your lips will slide over the metal to make beautiful music and you'll leave no marks or finger smudges.

Harmonicas, Historically Speaking
This is a centuries old instrument that got its start in Asia around the 1820s. However, it quickly became popular in America with even President Abraham Lincoln owning one. The harmonica is a free-reed wind instrument used in many genres of music from Blues to Jazz to Country to Rock. This tough instrument is small enough to stick in a pocket and allow everyone--even those in the wilds--to have music with them at all times.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Not a bad harp at all. Bit of a spiced-up Hohner., December 7, 2009
By bill_m1 (MA, USA)
Due to health laws, harmonicas are unfortunately not an instrument you can try before buying. Fortunately, they're a lot cheaper than guitars. I've been playing harmonica for a number of years and I currently own about 40 or 50 different harmonicas, which I'd either buy for the different keys or to just try out different brands. I decided to give this one a go, too.

Obviously, ANY sort of signature musical instrument is going to cost a little more than its contemporaries, whether it's a Tony Iommi SG or an EVH 5150 amp. You're not just paying for a name, though. You're paying for a model that was made to custom specifications yet was also made to be mass-produced. So it goes with the Steven Tyler harp.

All things considered, this is not a bad harp. It's not the best I've ever played through, but it's sure better than the cheap $5-10 ones you might find in the stores ("Hot Metal" comes to mind). It's pretty air-tight and bright sounding. The notes are bendable. The reeds look like they're plated and really strong.

These harps only come in the key of "A". Though considering how many rock guitarists I've played with who never seem to want to venture off the key of "E" (the related cross-harp key for this harmonica), it might be all you need on some gigs.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  You pay for the Celebrity name, August 15, 2009
By aspiring author
Just so you know where I'm coming from, I'm a beginner at harmonica with just a few harps. This one was bought for me as a gift.

It's a good harp but not up to the level of the other Hohners in the same price range. Most Hohners are made Germany, but this one is made in China. It sounds good, less brash than the Special 20, less mellow than the Blues Harp, but once you're familiar with it, you'll notice slight differences that are just a small step down in quality than other Hohners. The covers are not molded as smoothly, and have crimps in a few places, and gaps in a few others. And it's obvious that instead of sanding the edges of the comb smooth, they use heat because the front of the comb is a little uneven.

Now about those black covers...I have to admit that they do look nice. I'm assuming they are anodized aluminum (but I don't know for sure). Whatever they are, they sure do feel nice against the lips--less friction than stainless steel, and they don't get fingerprints and lip marks as easily.

I still like the way it sounds (as I'm a little partial to lower harps), but I'd say your paying about $10 just for the Steven Tyler name and the fact that it's black.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  A $30 Old Standby with a black cover., March 25, 2010
By R. Hazen (New Albany, MS)
I paid $30 for this harmonica. What a rip. It's just an Old Standby - which is a $7 kid's harmonica - with a black cover. I own a LOT of nice harmonicas... and this is not one of them. Do not buy this, unless you're paying only $7 for it. There is a Stephen Tyler harmonica that might be a little better, but it's the "Signature Series" and not this one, the "Artist Series". Artist series is junk.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Stveven Tyler Harmonica - The Onyx of the Harps at last!, August 6, 2009
By Edward Balen (Bradenton, Florida)
I simply love my Steven Tyler harp. I received it via UPS just today. It is harp number twenty-seven in my arsenal, and what a radically different harp she is too.

All my other harps are silver, and one is gold. This one is black, which is radically and extraordinarily different. Most harps come in different keys. This Steven Tyler model, since he plays with Aerosmith, only comes in A.

It sounds like a common A harp, but the looks of her are totally different. The Steven Tyler autograph on the top, the red interior and black shell box, the overall black color, including her comb, all of these things make her stand out in a very unique and special way.

I never thought I'd get into Aerosmith, but with Steven Tyler on lead vocal and harmonica, I'm hooked forever.

If you play harmonica like I do, and you want a harmonica that will make you stand out in the band, or just want Steven Tyler's harp, by all means get your hands and lips on one of these onyx babies. Steven Tyler will thank you that you did himself. It's a fact.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Looks good but........., June 19, 2010
By Lance
A nice looking harp. I have over 30 harps by different makers. This is on a par with a kids harmonica. I would never rely on this at a gig. There are many harps out there that cost less and play better. Even as a gold box deal it is not worth it. If it wasn't so little money I would have sent it back. The write up made it sound nice. If you really want to play, find something else.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  EXPECTED A BETTER PRODUCT FROM ONE OF THE BEST, April 17, 2010
By undertheshrine (Albany, CA USA)
I ordered this harmonica due to it's incredible price and brand name. I was once again taught a lesson in regards to "YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR" This cheaply made harmonica with cheap materials is not anything close to what you would expect from Hohner. I found it funny that a sticker had been placed on the harmonica that stated that "This harmonica is not a toy but a musical instrument and should not be used as such" I guess without it, 99% of people would think it was a toy! (I certainly thought it was one)

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Packaging not at all attractive, June 7, 2010
By M. Wolf (Pacific NW)
I bought this on a lightening deal so -- my bad I did not look closely at packaging.

The product description has a picture of the 'collectible' packaging.

I bought this for my granddaughter who is turning 5. The packaging is so ugly I ditched the packaging before giving it to her. While I know the packaging is really incidental to the product it is so ugly and it is hard to let go of that fact.

The harmonic is constructed well as inexpensive harmonics go.

The case feels flimsy and like it will break at any moment (That is with my using it. I don't expect the case will last long in 5 year old hands even if she is always gentle with it).

I expect though that the harmonica will last much longer. At least there is one thing in this package that lives up to what I would expect from the Hohner band.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Worth about the $6 I paid for it., September 15, 2010
By Sacket
I got this on a lightning deal and paid $6 for it. It was surprising to find that it is made very cheap. It does sound okay for the money and will be everything you expect from a $6 dollar harmonica. The listed price of $40...someone was hitting the crack pipe and thought it was this harmonica giving them the high.

This was a present for my grandson. He loved it. I also got him a book one how to play it. He had the instructions out and it had easy directions on playing the notes. Good buy

3.0 out of 5 stars.  so so, April 18, 2010
By stonesculptor (New Haven)
I bought one of these on a lightning deal for ten bucks. It arrived with a dead number two draw. It's too much trouble to send it back for that (shipping alone is more than the harp is worth), so I'll live with it. Other than that, the harp is more than okay -- so if you luck out and get an undamaged one, it's well worth the money. If you lose the crapshoot and get a faulty harp, too bad. Hohner needs to improve their quality control.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice First Instrument, April 22, 2010
By J.B.
For a $20.00 Harmonica, a much more stylish looking and quality sounding unit and nice case. Nothing to fancy but cool enough looking to keep up interest. 12 instead of 10 reeds that Hohner standard of same price range. It is an Asian unit I believe, but a good deal.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  ITEM LOOKED SCRATCHED AND USED, April 22, 2010
By B. ENG (NORTH CAROLINA)
The particular item I received had scratches on it and looked used. Being that it was a harmonica, I had to disinfect it before use. This may have been a return.
UGH! Except for that, as a Goldbox deal, it was "OK".

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Love it!!!, December 8, 2010
By William Serna
Even though the case isn't as nice as you would've expected, the harmonica is awesome-looking. Sound quality is great. the case protects it really good.

If you are a beginner I would recommend buying another harmonica in key of C, shame this one only comes in A cause it's truly great.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  it's ok, November 3, 2010
By Dale Thomas (Lake Tahoe, CA)
Hmmm Where to start. I don't like the tone. It's in a key I don't really like. It looks kinda cool but then when you pick it up, it feels pretty cheap. I suppose it would be fine for a young kid to play with.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  FRUSTRATED ABOUT A SO CALLED PROMOTION, September 17, 2010
By MARY
I WAS SENT A PROMOTIONAL CODE FOR THIS ITEM WHICH I TRIED TO PURCHASE DURING A SPECIAL GOLD DEAL PROMOTIONAL AND WERE NOT ABLE TOO. THE ITEM WAS SUPPOSED TO HAVE BEEN A LITTLE OVER FIVE DOLLARS WITH NO SHIPPING AND HANDLING. UPON TRYING TO PURCHASE THE ITEM TODAY, IT WOULD NOT TAKE THE PROMOTIONAL CODE AND THEN I WENT BACK IN REORDERED AND IT TOOK IT BUT ONLY GAVE ME THE PROMOTIONAL DISCOUNT BUT CHARGED ME FOR SHIPPING AND HANDLING AND NOW WILL NOT LET ME CANCEL THE ITEM. THERE IS A REAL PROBLEM WITH THE CUSTOMER SERVICE DEPARTMENT, WHEN YOU CAN'T GET AN ITEM AS ADVERTISED.
