Ideal for safe commuting and for low-light riding, Planet Bike's Blaze LED headlight and Superflash taillight combo will keep your path well lit. The Blaze offers a high and low power beam along with flashing mode, which is highly visible in daylight as well as darker conditions. In addition, the light attaches securely to your bike thanks to the Quick Cam bracket mounts, which adjust or remove in seconds without tools. The taillight is equipped with a 1/2-watt Blaze red LED and two eXtreme LEDs, which combine to produce a unique, eye-catching red flash pattern that's visible for up to 1 mile. The light is also built for long-term use, with an ultra-compact vertical design that's weatherproof, lightweight, and durable. About Planet Bike In November of 1996, Planet Bike was founded in Madison, Wisconsin. In many ways, Planet Bike began as a social experiment that dedicated itself to doing business in a different way. Instead of being just another company that develops and sells products with profit as its end goal, Planet Bike wanted to help bring about positive change for people, their communities, and the environment. Despite being a simple machine, the people at Planet Bike have always believed that the bicycle has great potential to help improve the world and the lives of the people in it. From the start, they have embraced an alternative corporate purpose which seeks to help get more people on bicycles by making communities friendlier places for the self-propelled. By donating 25% of company profits to causes that promote and facilitate bicycle usage, Planet Bike hopes to make an impact. Social experiments aside, Planet Bike was born from the heart of a cyclist with a goal of making innovative, high quality, and practical bicycle accessories. Simply put, they strive to design and develop the best bicycle products in the world. In the company's short ten year history, they have made important product innovations within the bicycle industry. Advancements include the 4-line computer which is now a standard in the industry and the world's first self-contained HID light. Not bad for a company that ten years ago started as a one man operation. Today, while still a small company, Planet Bike continues to evolve and improve their product line with the goal of always striving to build accessories that make it easier for people to ride their bikes. Since 1996, Planet Bike's financial support of the grassroots bicycle movement has totaled $500,000. By 2010, they have made a goal to donate $1 million to organizations that are dedicated to making America a friendlier place for cyclists.

The best and brightest AA headlight available., December 9, 2008
By Lisa from Portland
|
|
I compared this to last year's brightest Planet Bike LED light, and to my old NiteRider 12w halogen. It was much, much brighter than the other LED and comparable to the halogen, but with a whiter (less yellow) hue. It is so bright I plan to use it for mellow trail night-riding (uphill and flats) and combine it with the halogen for downhill stretches. I also will use it for daily commuting.
The battery life is excellent considering the brightness. A couple sets of rechargeable AA's should be all you need for daily use, even in steady (not blinky) mode. It is light weight and mounts nicely to handlebars w/o cords or battery packs. Regarding the previous comment on the handlebar clamp, I experienced the same thing but figured out I didn't have it adjusted properly. Actually the clamp is excellent, widely adjustable, and requires no rubber shims to fit any bar. The cam problem came about because it was screwed too far into the pivot. For a proper fit, back the screw out and click the strap in another notch or two, then re-adjust the cam screw. Works like a charm. The clamp fits most models of Planet Bike headlights which is nice because with a couple extra clamps (you may purchase them separately) you can instantly swap lights onto different bikes. By the way, the tail light is also the best I have found. I'm impressed with Planet Bike's products and their commitment to bike safety and advocacy. Their fenders, too, are excellent.

Excellent Combo Bicycle Light Set riding thru the city,, December 3, 2008
By A casual stroll through the lu.. (Prague)
|
|
Pretty good Headlight, beam seems strong enough for slow riding thru the city. If used with a flasher Headlight it'll work more than adequate for paced commutes. The construction is a sturdy plastic.
The Headlight uses a cheap mounting bracket that isn't great. It doesn't fit very well on the handlebars so you'll end up using a cut up old tube or tape to help keep it snug. You should still be able to tilt it back and forth for use in high/low beam (level it down towards the street in front of you) and flash mode (level it up towards traffic). The "close" pin doesn't snap back to keep it in "closed" for some reason but my Headlight didn't fall off yet.
#1 beam seems to be "low" for some reason instead of high on my Headlight. #2 high beam is brighter. #3 beam is flash mode.
The Headlight is not heavy, very decent size, compact, detaches easily from quick release mounting bracket. The button on the Headlight is rubber so it doesn't respond very well when you need to change modes quickly while riding. If you are in bright city lights, it's impossible to tell what mode it is in because the beam is barely visible on the ground and there is no extended visible light (or clear lens area) to see the light/mode while you are riding. The side of the Headlight has two clear lens/indents that aren't very visible from the side. The Headlight uses 2 AA batteries (use rechargeable batteries) as there is a low run time on alkaline cell batteries (5-18 hours).
If you are in city lights, the beam is barely visible on the ground, it's best to use the flash mode but level it up towards traffic or it won't be visible. The flashing lights in flash mode in darkness are visible on stop signs for at least 8 or more long city blocks, it's very good. The "flashing" mode bright flashes, are not very disturbing since it's impossible to see the flashes because there is no extended visible light (or clear lens area) to see the flashes while you are riding.
The front end lens area of the Headlight is very small (1 inch across - light mainly visible from front) but 60 feet away, it (on high beam) appears as a larger bright dot to far away traffic. It's best to use the Headlight for seeing the street in front of you with Another flasher "to be seen" Headlight, or as a flashing light in flash mode with Another flasher Headlight, double the flashing "to be seen" lights. If using Headlight on high beam, you can even level it up towards traffic, it is very bright.
The spread of the beam (high/low) is very adequate to see in front of you riding in darkness.
When using the high/low beam it's best to level it down towards the street in front of you, the beam is very adequate for (8-15 mph, slow city riding) (5-12 mph slow trail riding in darkness). It's best to use the Headlight with a flasher "to be seen" Headlight (Blackburn Quadrant Light is very good) in traffic.
In all, some technical/practical issues with the Headlight design, but a very, very good high/low beam for slow riding thru the city.
PROS: Headlight is not heavy, very decent size, compact, uses 2 AA batteries (lighter), the beam is strong enough for slow riding thru the dark city or slow trail riding in darkness, Headlight detaches easily from mounting bracket, flashing lights in flash mode very good, spread of the beam (high/low) visible in front in darkness is very adequate, The "flashing" mode bright flashes are not very disturbing/visible to rider, If using Headlight on high beam, you can even level it up towards traffic for a very bright "to be seen" light, lower price.
CONS: cheap mounting bracket that isn't great, light not very visible from the side, button on the Headlight is rubber that doesn't respond very well when you need to change modes quickly while riding in traffic, impossible to tell what mode it is in (in bright city lights) because there is no extended visible light (or clear lens area) to see the light/mode while you are riding, low run time on alkaline cell batteries.
With this Headlight, riding my bike at night, it allows me to see reasonably well. This is a very nice "to be seen" or "to see" light. Highly recommended for those on a budget and commuting or non-commuting bike riders.
This Headlight is barely visible in the rain. If you commute in the rain or ride fast, invest in something more powerful.
Planet Bike Blinky Super Flash Rear Bicycle Light Use in conjunction with Blackburn Mars 3.0 Flasher Rear Bicycle Light and you should be set. Use a GLoWEAR Class 2 Economy Vest, Lime, L/XL #21025 / 8210HL Safety Vest to be seen in the dark as well.

initially promising, ultimately unreliable, October 9, 2009
By Richard Edwards
|
|
I was initially very pleased with the Blaze 1 Watt light. The flash mode especially is very bright and visible. I was so pleased I soon got a second one.
Alas, in real usage the light is seriously flawed and I would not recommend it.
The mounting is poorly designed. The locking cam can easily pop open if you hit a bump. I secured it with a zip tie to prevent it from opening. The cam must be tight, because the lights are not balanced and tend to tip down. The rails on the light are brittle and cracked off one one light. The light can easily pop off the mount (and if you don't have a backup light will be hard to find in the dark!). I secured the lights with rubber bands to keep them from popping off. Both lights rattled. Now only one rattles because the other popped off and I couldn't find the front part.
The other serious flaw is the lack of voltage regulation. The light is very bright with fresh batteries, but starts to dim long before the batteries are used up. If you want a bright light, you will be buying a lot of batteries. Furthermore, they will be disposable batteries, because the rechargables have a lower voltage.
I like my Planet Bike rear blinkies. But the Blaze lights are not successful. I'm interested in the new 2 watt Blaze, but it appears to use the old awful mount. And I won't touch it without voltage regulation.

Blaze light, July 10, 2009
By Jamwizard (Florida)
|
|
Purchased this light combo mostly due to the Superflash taillight. I was pleased with the way it stands out and thought the headlight would also. Once I installed and started riding, my wireless cyclometer would stop working. When turning off the headlight, the cyclometer would start functioning again. Being I would rather monitor the cyclometer than you the light, I discontinued using the light. I notified Planet bike and the response was these lights can interfer with wireless computers and would just make the lights cost more to fix. Not the answer I was looking for. I thought $60 was not what I would call just inexpensive. So now I am needing a different light (FLASHING for daylight use) that does not interfer with wireless computers. I would not recomend this produce to anyone that is using wireless or intends to use wireless computers on their bikes.

Planet Bike Blaze 1-Watt headlight and superflash taillight set, August 20, 2009
By Captain Steve (Fort Lauderdale)
|
|
Awesome is the only way to describe these lights. I can see the reflection of the headlight in blinky mode on street signs a block away (and have had pedestrians in front of me turn around to see what is causing all the flashing!) I have noticed that cars that are about to pull out in front of me hesitate and stop. The headlight on steady mode is adequate for driving on dark street to keep me from hitting debris or falling into a pothole (I have a mountain bike, so am not going 40 miles an hour). The mounting brackets seem substantial and easy to adjust even on my tapered handlebars. The taillight is much brighter and more noticeable than other lights I have seen. I do everything I can to be seen at night or at dusk, when I normally ride. I couldn't be more pleased with my purchase. I'm going to get another set for my wife.

You WILL be seen, February 14, 2011
By loudvegas

I found this light set as I was looking for lights that met 3 conditions: 1. Flashing 2. Usable light output for primary illumination at night. 3. Less than $100.
1. Flashing: The 1 Watt headlamp has a attention getting strobe setting that is amazing. The tail light can NOT be beat for the price. I had to aim it down a little bit as I was not comfortable with it pointing towards car drivers eyes at night. If someone runs over you, it's because they were aiming for you, not because they didn't see you.
2. Usable Light Output for Primary Night Illumination: I was surprised to find that the headlight actually has usable light output for moderate speeds on the street at night. I would not suggest it for high speed off road trails at night, but it's more than adequate for street travel in the dark. And it's bright enough that you want to make sure that it's not shining into oncoming traffic.
3. Less than $100: Self explanatory. Very very good value so far. I did not give it 5 stars since the mounting bracket left something to be desired but it has been fine so far.

Awesome light but there is something that i dont like, September 29, 2009
By Recall
|
|
I've brought some awesome products from planet bike before and this one is no comparison to the last product that i brought. It is brighter it is a bit heavier i guess the brighter the light needs heavier components. The 1 watt headlight is great it has 3 settings and the first setting is bright but when you kick in the super flash it gets really bright almost blinding. The only complain i would have about this light is the taillight in the back of the bike. When i brought the small red taillight a while back there was a rubber button that was used to turn on the light in this case the light has a really hard PUSH button the bottom of the light. It makes the light extremely hard to turn on and off if you are say on your bike and want to turn it on. You have to push really hard in order to switch the settings. The light is awesome but the new construction could use some help. I would definitely recommend the headlight because its super bright and good price but the taillight could use some work but it works fine and is also super bright if you don't mind pressing harder to turn something on then this should be a great bike light for you.

Best bang for the buck., December 24, 2008
By napleslmt (Naples, Fl)
|

I like that the headlight case is black. I live on a rural paved street with no streetlights. I took it for a test drive the first night, plenty of light for a casual ride. Personally, I wouldn't go for a ride in unfamiliar territory as the beam is fairly focused in front of you. Meaning, you adjust the mount up and down for distance or close illumination. You can't really have both. It does illuminate both lanes of the road. Perhaps a second lower power light for the close up illumination would be a great combo for some folks. Mount is easily adjustable for different size handlebars. The powerful flashing feature is why I bought this light, for daytime visibility.
The tail light installed quickly and has the super bright flashing capability as well.

Package Deal on Planet Bike, May 16, 2011
By AllisteR (Atlanta GA)

Rear Light is awesome, it does exactly what it needs to do.
1 Watt Blaze is good for casual pace at night.
Good visibility when there are no light sources.
OK when competing against street lights, etc.
If you want the maximum light cheaply, stop looking b/c it doesn't exist.
This light does what it's price point suggests.
Reasonable light for casual riding, and good visibility for drivers and traffic.
It is not good for any off road trail riding in my opinion, except as a back up when your $300+ light fails.

Excellent lighting for night riding!, November 8, 2010
By Sanriobaby =^.^= (Suburbia, USA)
|
|
I purchased this for my husband who had an interest in biking to and from work. Living in suburbia, there isn't a lot of public lighting on roads at night and I wanted to be sure that my husband was safe as possible (night cycling is always risky) and visible to motorist while riding home late at night. When searching for this product, I considered quality, other reviews, battery life, features, and pricing. I'm glad to say I made the right choice! My husband was very pleased at just how bright these lights are, especially since he says that it's pitch black a third of the way home. He had no problems attaching the superflash light to his seat and he says he feels that he's easily seen by others at night. The headlight is very bright, but to conserve battery life, he alternates the brightness as needed. The superflash is also great too, b/c it's bright and flashes in a pattern that it's very hard not to be noticed by other motorist, and my husband keeps this light on the pattern flashing every time he rides at night, So far, he hasn't had any problems with the smaller superflash falling off as others have mentioned. Both lights stay on securely, but can be easily removed when needed. Overall, my husband is very pleased. These lights are a must have for anyone who rides at night. Trust me, your safety is not worth buying a cheaper product. Spend the money on this brand and know that it's worth every penny. I'm glad to have purchased this light set from Planet Bike and would gladly buy it again!

Keeping Me Alive..., February 11, 2010
By Jedidiah Mitchell (Amherst, MA)
|
|
I use this combo to stay alive on the roads when I'm commuting to / from work. Without a bright head & tail combo I find cars just... don't realize you're there. These work great: I feel like the 1W gives me enough visibility to do a solid 25mph in the dark on the downhills without getting too hairy. My only complaint is about the plastic mounting, especially on the tail light: it's weak and poorly positioned. First time I took my bike to a shop and they put it in a grip the housing for the tail light got busted immediately. It still works, but it's no longer on there securely.

Great combo, October 1, 2009
By chuanha1
|
|
This is a very nice combo that will make you very visible in the city and also does a reasonable job lighting your way in the dark. If you've been using typical LED lights, you'll be surprised by how much better then 1/2 watt and 1 watt LEDs in these lights are. I was previously using a headlight with 9 white LEDs, but the single 1 watt LED in this headlight is much brighter and its strobe mode is much more attention getting -- I feel like an ambulance. No comparison. Just get it, you'll feel safer.

Here again you get what you pay for! They are a little pricey but worth it. They attach to the bike well. The headlight really shines far ahead even on low beam and in traffic the strobe really gets the motor vehicle drivers attention. The taillight works great too.

Blinding Head and Tail Light, September 2, 2009
By 5 out of 4 people have problems .. (La, CA USA)
|
|
I just got this bike light combo after searching around for something moderately priced but worth it and i have to say that it is bright. For the money your spending on this it is definitely worth it for commuter/casual riding. (night mountain trails i would go with something stronger just because you need to know whats all around as opposed to tunnel vision) I exercise every day at least 10 miles on my bike and let me tell you that this light is strong. The rear light alone if looked directly into is blinding, so is the head light. Perfect for getting someones attention when riding at night. I think this definitely worth the money invested. Installation is quick once you get the hang of it for both front and back light. I would recommend removing the lights before stowing after daily use though as they are kinda affixed to moderately weak hard plastic. (I hang my bicycle upside down after use daily so i take them off) Other than that, i love this lighting system.

The clips didn't seem as flimsy as other reviews indicated, but I ride on mostly smooth terrain commuting to work. Very bright for it's price. I work evenings and bike home at 1am on an unlit bike trail, this light allows me to see well enough to go at normal speeds without worry.

Great lights, February 1, 2009
By Allen (San Francisco, CA)

These are the best lights that planet bike offers. The rear taillight with superflash will definitely get anyones attention. The front light has a strobe affect similar to a police when they flash their red and blues. Very effective in getting noticed by drivers. The front light is very bright, has a high, low, and strobe settings. I wouldn't use this for a trail light as it doesn't have much flood. This is probably be the best light there for urban road use.

I like it!, January 7, 2009
By Rusty Razor (Califonia)

Headlight: attaches/detaches in seconds, very easy to install. Run time is excellent with regular alkaline batteries but much better when using nimh rechargeables. The light is bright and does a nice job keeping the bike trails illuminated. People really notice the flashing mode which I use in town. Build quality is excellent and comes with a lifetime warranty from Bike Planet (to the original owner).
Taillight: installs easily, detaches from mounting bracket in seconds. Battery life is excellent. This is a very bright taillight! Same great build quality and warranty. I'm very pleased with both products.

These lights work great!, October 18, 2011
By jarom1976

I reviewed several different sets of lights before deciding on those and how glad I am that these are the ones I chose. The main light works great and really lights up the area in front of you while you are riding. The strobe effect on the front and back lights is awesome for when there is a little bit of daylight. They don't blink at the same intervals, but rather more of an alternating effect which makes a huge difference for cars to see you. While riding in the morning I always pass several bikes with different kinds of lights and I haven't seen one yet that is anywhere as good as the one I'm using. Get 'em, you won't regret it!

good for the price, July 21, 2011
By LouisianaRN

I commute to work and this product does great. The tail light is blinding and the headlight gives about the same illumination as a small led maglite. Neither give great side visibility. So I clip the tail light to my helmet so the blinking can be seen from greater angles when I turn my head. When you are taking bend in the road with some bushes at waist level you will want the light higher. I just wish the lights made a clicking noise to let you know the button was pressed. Otherwise, I have no issues.

Easy install, perfect for nighttime park/street riding, July 9, 2011
By Christopher Berghoff (Albany, NY)
|
|
The headlight installed in just a couple of minutes, and the tail light clipped right onto the back of our pants, and now on our seat bags. Each has a small footprint on the bike, much smaller than what I expected.
Headlight is nice and bright, illuminating the ground quite well about 15-20 feet away. More than enough to have time to react to potholes in the street or terrain changes in the park. I probably wouldn't go downhill mountain riding or racing with these, but they are perfect for running to the store or to get a snack at night. The taillight blinks in a weird, very eye catching pattern. If the driver can see, you will be noticed!
We feel much safer with this set on each of our bikes! We have had good experiences with Planet Bike products thus far, and this light set is no exception. Would buy again without hesitation.

I bought this headlight and taillight combo for commuting to and from school. The light and flasher are very bright and visible. I really like the high beam function of the headlight. This light will definitely catch the attention of cars and pedestrians. both of the light are waterproof so riding in the rain won't be a problem. the only complaint I have is of the cheap plastic holster that is used to attach the headlight to the bike.

Makes Drivers Aware of Your Presence, May 7, 2011
By bAtu

I basically use both lights in flash mode only and I've already been told twice by drivers to dim or turn off the front light. That is, the head light definitely makes you visible for the oncoming traffic. As for the rear light, it uses the same eye-catching flashing pattern (fast blinking small LEDs, slow blinking huge LED) and so far proved to be sufficient.
Note: The rear light is designed so that it can be clipped onto almost anything, not only to the seatpost mount.

Great light.. no issues., April 17, 2011
By PDF (PA, USA)
|
|
I bought this light for the combo front/rear light and the ability to strobe. I live in a rural area and the front light is more than adequate for riding on the road. I generally use the strobe because its easy enough to see the road when it strobes and I generally bike with my dogs so speeds are always less than 10mph.
I have a Fuji Sunfire and have added rear baskets. The rear tail light is mounted on the optional T mount and is superb. I can hear the cars slow as they get closer... that means they see me and are avoiding me.
The front light mount has not slipped or moved since it was installed.. and that is after a few battery changes.
Great lights, probably not for hard off road use.. but has proven to be an excellent choice for my use.

Perfect commuting light, January 3, 2011
By Brian
|
|
I once looked at this blinking tailight in a store and knew I had to have it. The tailight is ridiculous - SO bright. Drivers may get annoyed! I've only used the headlight on blinking mode, which is normally the safest. I don't think the one watt steady beam is bright enough to light your travel path, but it's certainly bright enough for drivers to see you. It even has small outlets on the sides to help make you visible to side traffic. I haven't run the batteries down yet but believe the other reviews - 100 hours each. Already have rechargeables so that shouldn't be a problem. Only caution - do NOT look into the beams!

Great Commuter Set, November 3, 2010
By Noe Esparza
|
|
If you are riding around on the streets, this light set works great. I have not had any problems with the mounting hardware. If you do encounter long stretches of city road where there is no lighting, then you might want to think about getting the 2-watt so you can see the road conditions better.

Great lights for city commuting, October 8, 2010
By Shenmue728 (California)
|
|
I use these lights for my commute which can start as early as 5AM and end as late as 8PM. My route is mostly roads with streetlights but there are a few shortcuts i take that arent so well lit.
The headlight is great. A tight beam that can spot a pothole or nail in the road in time with enough flood spill over to light the road around me. The strobe is amazing on this light! You will be seen by drivers with this pointed down the road. When it reflects off street signs it looks like the cops are rolling up.
The tail light is great. The brightest I've seen with a strobe that means business to oncoming drivers. Worth every penny.

Great Set, if it meets your exact needs., September 14, 2010
By B. Hernandez (FL.)

I purchased this set over much deliberation on different brands/styles, etc. Planet bike came highly recommended especially on the superflash tail light, everyone raves about it. Now I know why, it's great! It has 3 options, flashing red, on(red) or off, it's easy to turn on/off. Do not attach this to your seat bag, it's not secure and many have lost it that way. I also don't feel cars would be able to see you as well since it may not be pointing directly at them and can linger downwards. I attached mine to the seat tube under my bag, it took >5min, easy. I use it on flashing mode as i believe it's the most noticeable of all. I ride in complete darkness for about 1 hr or so in the mornings.
Now for the Blaze 1 headlight review: I love it! It was easy to put on also, just make sure it's on tight enough BEFORE you attach your light, again, many people have lost theirs this way if it wasn't on tight and they didn't hear the click. IT has 3 versions, each touch of the button upfront gets a new look, first is low light, 2nd is high, and 3rd is flash. I felt this combo best suited my needs for the following reasons. I ride on main streets that are lit well (early in the dark) so I mostly use it on flash mode so that I can be seen, so far so good, cars certainly notice. I can see the reflection from blocks away off of street signs. However, some streets are poorly lit if at all on my route, I had to point the blaze downwards to the ground in order to see where I was going, even then you can't really go much faster than say 14-15mph unless you want to risk hitting something you can't see. On the other hand on pretty well lit streets with this on flash I can go 18mph+, I ride a road bike and it's easy to get up there in speeds. All in all, it's PERFECT for me, but you have to consider your own situation. If you are someone who will mostly be riding in pure darkness, then either ride real slow OR you will find yourself staring at the ground the whole time. I think it's a great value for the $$. used it 4x so far on rides 20miles+. Great for me!

Highly Recommended, August 30, 2010
By Steven (New York City)

Overall, a Great light set.
Pros:
Incredibly bright - bright enough to use as a "seeing" light in addition to a "be seen" light.
Superflash mode gets attention.
Runs on standard (rechargeable) batteries.
Adequate battery life.
Good mount, easy to install and remove.
Good value for the money.
Cons:
Narrow-ish beam. Hard to see from the side. (Other lights have a much wider spread.)
Too bright to use in high pedestrian areas. (This is a street light, for cars. Don't use it on the sidewalk.)

well priced and super visible, July 26, 2010
By Ogg (Oakland CA)

I have been using various Planet Bike lights for the past 6 years and they keep getting better and better. Everyone should have a superflash taillight, they are even really helpful on cloudy or rainy days. I often wish that I had a crap load of money so that I could just buy hundreds of these taillights and then just give them to idiots riding around at night with no lights on. The 1-watt headlight is quite a bit bigger then the previous 5-LED model, which I don't like but it is really bright and it seems to be of a higher quality then the previous models. It still isn't bright enough to use as a light to find your way, but it is an excellent light which allows cars to see you and the superflash setting is very noticeable to cars. Personally I think that these types of "see me" lights should always be in a flashing mode. Also the cam locking mount on the front is the best mount I have seen yet for this kind of application.

Excellent for visibility at dusk/dawn, June 13, 2010

Excellent head and taillight combo for drivers to see you when the sun starts setting or is just coming up. They're not going to outshine the serious lights that cost over $100, but these are a great option until you are ready to step up to that quality.

Great Commuter Combo, May 9, 2010
By J.Keefer (South Carolina)
|
|
I've used several lights in the past for various applications. Princeton Tec Switchbacks are my favorite for off road, but for just going down the street or riding to work early in the morning, this package is pretty good and the quick release on the front light is pretty sweet. It's adjustable for various bar sizes. It provides enough light to be seen by cars and see the road and commuting speeds. If you plan on riding off road or fast, look at something else... probably something costing 3 times as much. However, if you're just looking for something to get you around and keep you safe in the dark, this light is one of the best disposable battery powered models I've seen.

Good little combo, May 6, 2010
By Bulldog (Texas)

I got this for my girlfriends bike for those rides that take us into the falling sun. The headlight is pretty bright for its power source and the strobe feature is great. The one button design is easy to use and needs no explaining. Also you can slide the light off the mount and use it like a flashlight.
The tail light is really awesome. It is super bright, even it bright light. The mount goes on nice and easy and the light then slides onto it. I am not totally sold on how the light slides on but so far it is working just fine. I dont think it will be an issue for her but for someone who rides harder might find it popping off. If it fails I will be sure to update this.
I bought the tail light by itself for my bike. I got it after we got hers since I liked it so much. It comes with the mount for the seat post or the seat stay. Also the light has a clip built in that you could clip to your shorts or pack. I have a rack with bag mounted to it. On the rear of the bag it has a little strap that seems like it was made for this light. It works great.

Good for the Green Belt Trials, April 24, 2010
By Christian (PLANO, TX, United States)

Good quality construction and reasonable light for established paths and trails. This light does not shine brightly enough for dark single track or unfamiliar trails with hills. The battery life on both the front and rear lights is fantastic. This light has been great on night rides along the local green belt. I highly recommend this light, but don't be oversold on its capability.

Does the job!, March 21, 2010

I bought this set after a few weeks of extensive reviewing. Planet Bike seems to have some of the best bike lights out there. Well I'm glad I chose this one! The lights are much smaller than what I expected, that's a plus because I didn't want some huge lights on my bike. The lights are super bright, front light has 2 brightness settings and then the flash mode, back light has a steady and a flash mode. I love that the back light is clear, that gives a nice sleek look. They were easy to install. Oh and the front light slides off easily and can be used like a flashlight, the back light also slides off and can be clipped on your body. Its so small you can even clip on the waist of your pants. I purchased some rechargeable batteries and I'm good to go!

First Impressions..., March 17, 2010
By Happy couple
|
|
First off my rig: 1987 Bianchi Strada fixie. I tell you this because folks have complained about the headlight mount not working well. It fit my bike handlebars perfectly.
I tested this against my old Cat Eye Opticube and the difference is amazing. During the day the blaze is highly visible whereas I could barely tell if the Cat Eye was on. At night the blaze is very bright and drowns out the cat eye in a side by side comparison.
In fact, the blaze overpowers the cat eye in low beam mode.
The tail light is extremely bright. I looked directly into it which left a bright red spot in my visual field for the rest of the night. I can only hope that I don't blind drivers causing them to crash into me.
The light seems durable but only time will tell. If something breaks I will update this review.
Cheers!

Not as bright as expected, February 10, 2010
By M. Otis
|
|
Part of this may be unrealistically high expectations, but I was hoping for something really bright like an HID. It would be really helpful if instead of Wattage they just said how many lumens the bulb output.
Pros are that it's a really pretty pair, and that they do work really well as blinky lights...if somebody can't see you with them blinking then they shouldn't be allowed to drive.

Great for commuting, January 8, 2010
By A
|
|
I purchased this set to increase my visibility to motorists during bicycle commuting.
The Superflash taillight is great. I recently had the chance to view a friend's blinky from a car and from > 3 blocks away it caught my attention more than the taillights of cars. Pretty nice. The only disadvantage is that off-axis line-of-sight isn't quite as bright due to the lens used to intensify the brightness of the big LED.
Regarding the 1W Blaze, I use it during the transition time of the year between summer and winter. During the spring and summer, there's enough light outside during commuting hours that I generally don't need a light to see. During the winter when it's dark outside in the morning, I use a Niterider HID. In the autumn, the Niterider is overkill and I use the Blaze as backup if I get caught out after the sun goes down. I don't feel that the Blaze is sufficient as a primary light unless it's really dark outside -- it gets washed out easily by oncoming headlights and by other ambient light. It's strength is the blinking function -- the Blaze gets everyone's attention. The blink pattern is kind of stuttered and if you stare straight at it you'll probably have a seizure. Normally cars won't see me coming down the street and will just pull out in front of me either out of ignorance or spite. With the Blaze flashing away, it's apparent to me that I'm very visible; cars will pause at intersections just to figure out what kind of object I am. I feel safer.
Some people complained in their reviews about the mounting bracket -- I haven't really encountered any issues mounting it on a TTT Forgie (26 mm), as long as you make sure it's cinched down tight.
In summary: Superflash -- great, particularly when viewed straight-on. Blaze -- a bit underpowered as a sole light source but a reasonable backup light source in a pinch for times that you get caught out after sunset. The blinking function is great: bright and attention-getting.

Great urban setup, December 21, 2009
By Tony Fleming
|
|
I see some folks don't like the mount. I can't comment on that. I slid the front light onto an old screwed on mount from another brand fixed on my ancient commuter bike and it fit snug. Mount aside, the front flasher is outstanding for my in-town Chicago commuting and errand running. I suspect that some drivers think I am a cop. Train commuters stop mid-jaywalk. Cars stop. Cabs see me. It's outstanding. I have put thousands of short hop miles on this bike in and around the central city and I'm thrilled with this purchase (at REI). The rear was an after-thought when I bought the set because I have a five LED taillight which I know is very visible. But, I love the flasher. It's erratic pattern and intermittent ultra-bright flash I know are taking care of business behind me. I concur with the rider who notes the on-off switch for that is unique. No "feel". But, it works. Altogether, I am pleased enough to log on and give it the five star review.

Superb light set, but could be better, May 18, 2011
By jschristian44
|
|
For the price, I was expecting something high quality. What I got was a pretty bright headlight, and a good tail light. I was expecting something super bright and a good tail light. The tail light is decent, but the headlight looks like it will break the first time it falls off. And that might happen sooner than later, because the included locking clamp doesn't lock correctly where I mounted it. I have it on a road bike. I would have mounted it in the center, it might have worked better, but I have a computer there so I couldn't do that. It is good enough though that it should be just fine the way I have it, just took some time. I guess they are worth the price considering the light output on the headlight, but I wouldn't have paid over 30 dollars if I had saw it first in action. I suggest waiting until it goes on sale, or something much better comes out. But if you ride at night, this is enough light to keep the roads brightly lit.

Gift for Dad, February 24, 2011
By E. Santaw (Orlando, FL USA)
|
|
I bought this as a gift for my dad who was starting to bike to work early enough that it was still dark out. So far his experience with it has been quite positive. He stated he can see and be seen, which is good.
Also, the light comparison tool on the Planet Bike website is what I used to finally decide on this light. It was quite helpful as comparing the lights online by specs only is quite difficult.
If I were to need a new light set I'd definitely get one for myself. Overall, a great product and so far I've been impressed with Planet Bike as a company.

Good Light, December 23, 2009
By TJ (Madison, WI)

Solid Light. Have been commuting with it in the Wisconsin winters now for a month. The front is bright enough to see the lay of the road. Not as bright as car headlights, but that's not going to happen before you hit 100+ dollars. The rear light is plenty bright to allow people to see you.

Bright light that rattles., August 15, 2011
By b g

I am sending back this light for the second time. The interior of the light rattles, and the fastener is never tight enough, leaving the light to droop after hitting a brick street. Ships with flimsy rubber in attempt to absorb some of the shaking. Bad design, which is sad, because the light is really bright.

real good set, need re-design on headlight mount.., September 24, 2011
By masfast1

I took up cycling after again after 35 years. The evolutions that have taken place are great. Specifically on the this product, back in the days when I rode, headlights were powered by D Cells or a generator turned by the friction of the tire, or a flashlight taped to the handlebars. Well, after reading reviews I am happy to report that this product will get the attention of motorists that "are paying attention" to the road. People will still cut you off regardless even if they see you, I just have to be on the defensive.
I have used this for over 3 months now & the only issue is the headlight mount. It does not firmly secure to the handle bar but it has not loosen to the point of unlatching or continually sagging on me. An occasional lift to adjust on the light is required. If the manufacturer would make a finer thread pitch, this would solve that issue.
I think the tail light is more than adequate & I always use it in the blinking mode.
Overall a real good product, can be better.

headlight turns off occasionally for no reason, September 22, 2011
By Alberto Vargas (San Francisco, CA USA)
|
|
I have owned these lights for more than a month, but used them for relatively rarely, mostly around sunset in the evening, rarely at night. The headlight, in less than 10 hours of total use, started turning itself off randomly in the middle of my ride. I ride on paved city streets, so there hasn't been any undue stress on the light. For safety equipment, this is unacceptable.
Other nitpicks:
- The tail light looks white when off, and red when on. Why? I assumed it could be used as a front light based on the photos - not so.
- Head and tail light use different batteries. This is inconvenient, stupid in fact. If the tail light, which I use more often, runs flat, I can't use the batteries from the headlight.
- Headlight is more of a spot rather than flood light. What this means is that it is relatively useless to me when it is truly dark. The headlight is only good for being seen by drivers on the street.
Overall, this set of lights is not worth the asking price. I am returning mine to Amazon.
