A Beam of Amazing Brightness! Is it Divine?, July 3, 2010
By Liorr Morrison (Los Angeles, CA)
|
|
Wow, what can I say? When this headlight came in the mail, I was really excited. You all know how amazon shopping is: You research your options ad nauseam, until you've found the perfect one. Then you get all excited because you've sort of married yourself to it. Well, that happened with this, and believe me, I want no divorce. You can't tell how bright it is during the day, but at night, it's really amazing. Maybe I've just been deprived of high-quality bike lights, but I was stunned at the brightness of this. My previous Blackburn Quadrant headlight is a joke compared to this "Princeton Tec Eos Bike Maxbright Rebel LED Headlight". It's made from quality materials, and comes with three different mounting options: You can wear it around your head with the included quality head strap, you can attach it to a helmet with an included Velcro strap, and you can mount in on your bike. They all work well. At night, it projects a very wide yet far-reaching cone of intense light ahead of you. I've gotten a strong reflection off of car reflectors over two blocks away. The high, medium, low, and blinking setting options are nice. I like the fact that the blinking mode uses the same level of brightness as the high mode. You'll really get the attention of any oncoming traffic. If you wear it on your head or helmet, you almost look like a moving lighthouse or prison control tower! You can literally see the beam of light! In regard to some of the arguments about whether this light is made to be seen or to see, I honestly think you can see very well with this--not to even mention be seen. Obviously it's not one of those $500+ headlight systems that are meant to light up the road just as a car's headlamps do, but compared to my previous one (which was considered one of the better headlamps at the time), it does the job beautifully--especially if you're an urban rider. On top of all this, it's tiny! You'd never expect such brightness to come from one little LED! When you're approaching a stop or warning sign, the sign flashes with such intensity it almost seems as though the sign itself it backlit. Oh, and it looks awesome, don't you think? Unconventionally cool - a rebel indeed!
Anyway, I can't stop raving about this light. You can probably tell I'm a little obsessed (I still bring it with me from room to room =D ). Listen to all of the reviews. If I could have given it 6 stars, I would have. Get the last one before it goes out of stock! EXCELLENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

excellent light for night biking/activities, October 7, 2009
By jarrito (north carolina)
|
|
i purchased this light at my local Mast General Store about a year ago and have been incredibly satisfied with it ever since. i've only changed the batteries in it about three times, because i use it mostly for biking on the blinking setting. i really like all the modes it has; really bright, bright, dim and blinking. the brightest setting really lights up the road, and i've traveled through wooded areas at night with great visibility. the ONLY downside is that it does drain the battery on the brightest setting after about an hours use. that may also depend on what batteries you use, though. i use normal duracell/energizer batts- never tried lithiums.

Princeton Tec Eos Rebel Bike Light, January 20, 2010
By Steven Schwartz
|
|
I use this light both at work and recreationally. It is very bright and runs a long time on three AAA batteries. I have had it in the rain, on the bike and in the freezing cold. Seems impervious. I have it as a backup when I ride the trails. I would be fine for the streets. I also have a Princeton Tec Eos several years old. It is not as bright but has also stood the test of time. These are great lights and very resonably priced.

Great light for mounting on your helmet, and great support from Princeton Tec., June 16, 2010
By J. Castaldi (Chicago, IL)
|
|
I use this light mounted on my helmet, in addition to a light mounted on my handlebar. A handlebar light is important (and required by law in many communities for night riding), but it only points in the direction that your bike is heading. When approaching an intersection, you can't be sure that cross traffic will necessarily see your handlebar-mounted light, and a car's headlights may wash it out. With a second light mounted on your helmet, you can direct that light toward wherever you're looking. The bike is going straight, but you can turn your head to aim the light right at anyone or anything on your sides.
The Princeton Tec EOS BIKE works great in this capacity. It comes with a few different mounts so you can choose whichever one works best for you; I use the velcro strap run through the air vents on my helmet along with the plastic bracket.
The light itself is very bright. At its highest setting, it lights up street signs from half a block away. I have not ridden in total darkness with this light or had to use it to illuminate where I'm going, as my night riding is on well-lit Chicago streets. But I am confident that it gives me an extra level of safety by making me more visible to traffic.
The button to turn on the light is recessed a bit and has a rubberized cover. It's easy to turn on (unless I'm wearing my thick winter gloves), but seems like it would never turn on accidentally when stowed in a bag.
The light has four settings - high/medium/low/flash - and you access your preferred setting with repeated pushes of the power button: one press for high, two for medium, and so on. One thing I like is that after the light has been running for a short while, it only takes one push of the button to shut it off no matter which mode you're in. Let's say you're riding with the light set to medium (which is accessed by two button presses when you turn on). When you finish your ride and turn the light off, just one button press shuts it off - you don't have to cycle through low and then flash modes to get to off. It's not a huge thing, of course, but it's a pretty smart feature which I appreciate in a moderately priced light.
I've used this light for several months now, and the only issue was when I dropped my helmet and broke the mount. Totally my fault. I emailed Princeton Tec to ask about buying a new mount, and they got back to me very promptly and sent me a replacement mount for free. With that great customer service and my overall satisfaction with the light, I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one should mine get lost or stolen.

best mount for commuters, January 16, 2010
By Andy K
|
|
I have yet to find a brighter bike light that has a mechanically reliable mount. Most lights seem to use a rubber strap or band. This one uses a solid stiff plastic band similar to the attachments many rear lights use on bicycle seat-posts. Plus, it has a screw with a knob for hand-tightening it at any vertical or horizontal angle. Finally, the light can be removed from the mount for taking it with you into work using a snap similar to those seen on rear bicycle lights. I have commuted a short 2 mile route to work on well-lit streets for 2 years. This is a great light to be seen by cars. However, I got 2 of these for more safety. I like that the light is waterproof to 1 meter for riding in the rain.

A very good quality light, October 7, 2010
By Dog Lover (Minneapolis, MN, USA)
|
|
I have four bikes and four different bike lights. The Princeton Tec is easily the best. If I was rating relative to price, I would have given it five stars. But, I reserved five stars for those $200-500 bike lights. I met one last night and almost went blind. But, if you want a very good basic light at an affordable price, this is it. The thing I like best is that it combines a good wide angle view with decent distance. One of my other lights is as bright 50 feet forward, but it's a spotlight telling me little about what's on the side of the road or trail. Don't be fooled by the single LED. One of my lights has 14 LED's, and is not as good. The only time I wish I had more light, is when there is other light around from houses, cars, or streetlights. When I am on a totally dark trail, this is all I need.
Follow-up note: buy a good battery charger and good rechargable batteries. The extra light from this unit comes from someplace, and it's your batteries. You will easily get 2-3 night rides from your batteries, but not much more.

Good and bright, good mount., July 3, 2010
By Jeff

|
I ordered this to use on my bicycle on the Dupage county Illinois prairie path at night. The path is very dark in many places and is not lit at night except for street crossings. With this light I was able to spot a deer, a raccoon, and two cats long before I came into contact with them on the high setting. After a 25 mile ride in the dark the mount did not budge. I used Sanyo Eneloop lithium ion rechargeable batteries and on high I never saw a note-able difference in lighting. I had a few cars stop for me at road crossings so I know I was extremely visible with this light. It lights up things from a distance and has enough falloff on the sides to cover my peripheral vision in front of me. I use this light on my handle bars and a small 1 LED light on my helmet for reading signs close up or to see where I want to look. I dropped it once or twice while installing so I know it is durable. I would definitely recommend this light to friends or family as a night time riding light.

Excellent for a 1W led, September 21, 2010
By Shagui
|
|
This light provides a huge ilumination, good to have it in your helmet or in your handle bar if you ride in the nights on the streets. You can see an you can bee seen. It's great how the power button works, you press it once, you wait, then you press it again it turns off, don't have to pass thru the diferent setting to turn it off!!! The blinking mode is not very fast but still ok
I not tried yet in the yards but seem to me that will enough if you have two of them one in the handle bar and other in your helmet
It's waterproof, you DON'T need a special tool to change the AAA bateries For the same price three options, Helmet mount, Handle bar mount and Headlight and you can switcht betwen handle bar or helmet-headlight with no big deal

Fantastically bright light for the size, September 6, 2010
By S. Gary (Atlanta, GA USA)
|
|
I purchased this light a few weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised by the size of the light and the fact that it only requires 3 AAA batteries. Have yet to ride in the rain but it appears to be waterproofed well. Its solidly constructed. The mounting bracket is sturdy and it comes with 2 or 3 different sized (thickness) rubber shims.
I'm a night time/pre-dawn commuter and my round trip is 20 miles. I ride through several dark patches and this light shows the way brilliantly.
It has 4 modes, High, Medium, Low (all steady), and blinking (high setting). Regular batteries will last a week (10 hours) if set on the high setting, the same with rechargeable batteries (my commute is an hour each way 5 nights a week).
I strongly suggest rechargeables, otherwise the upkeep will surpass the purchase price very quickly.
To access the batteries unscrew the nut (use a flat head screwdriver or a nickel). The nut will remain with the casing. The back cover is hinged like a door, no flimsy rubber hinge, no complete removal of cover. I love efficient design.

Defective unit, probably previously returned, September 17, 2011
By NoBull
|
|
I ordered this item based on generally positive reviews and the fact that it uses regular batteries.
The item was "sold by Reiss Innovations, LLC and fulfilled by Amazon" (I thought the latter was a good thing, but, as it tuned out, I was wrong).
To make the long story short, I received the unit that did not work. Something must be wrong with the switch. When you press the button, the unit may (or may not) only briefly blink and that's it.
The unit came with the batteries already installed (I have never seen a _new_ item sold with _batteries_ _inside_, so, I suspect, this item had been previously returned, and the seller didn't even bother to check it before selling it again).
Conclusions: 1) the quality of the item is questionable; 2) the seller seems to ship previously returned defective units. I would stay away from this product and this seller (although it's kind of difficult to tell who is to blame here - Reiss Innovations, LLC or Amazon; maybe, there _is_ a reason for this complicated retail scheme).

Small But Powerful, August 24, 2010
By bob dymond (MURRIETA, CA, US)

I'll chime in with the rest of the five star reviews. Just came back from the best night-time kickbike rideRed Sport Classic Kickbike I've had in a long time. This little wonder throws a lot of light--even on the medium setting. I was able to ride through the darkest passages of the bikepath with utter abandon. I used the elastic head strap mount on my helmet (with a blinkie on the back) and this arrangement worked perfectly. The beam is even, with no excessive hot-spots. The rapid Amazon turnaround time was the icing on the cake. I plan to use this light a lot, which says a lot about its value.

bright, light-weight and functional, January 5, 2011
By Tom Wild (Colorado, USA)
|
|
This has served me very well for cycle commuting on dark bike paths with no street lights. Very impressed by brightness and, more importantly, adequate beam width. No problem in Colorado 0F temperatures. Battery life good so far. Helmet mount working very well for me. A "see" light (not just be-seen) adequate to see the imperfections and ice on concrete paths at night. Have not tried it off-road. I do believe you would have to spend several hundred dollars to improve on this. Can't believe I made do with my old cateye 1-watt LED as long as I did (a be-seen only light on a useless bracket). Highly recommend the EOS.

By S. Ramon (Tampa Bay, FL)

If you want a light to light up the trail in the middle of nowhere going 25 mph, this is not the light for you, but, if you're looking for a light to grab motorists' attention from 1/4 mile away in broad daylight, and, to provide enough light for nighttime commuting, this is it. Spend the extra $10, and you won't be disappointed. Waterproof, includes alkaline batt's, multiple mounting options, bright as h** - No comparison.

Initially loved it; now it eats batteries, October 22, 2011

This thing does throw out a lot of light, but after a year of use I am noticing shorter and shorter battery life. Now I'm only getting 8 hours or so in blinking mode - which is annoying. Not sure why this is happening, and not sure I want to go through the hassle of returning it.

Very Bright with Excellent Versatility of Positioning, July 5, 2011
By Bobbilee (GA, USA)
|
|
In the heat of Georgia summers, I prefer to do my bike exercise in the evening as the sun is going down. As a result, I am often caught finishing my ride after it gets really dark. I had previously purchased a cheaper Bell headlamp that I had to attach inside my basket as it wouldn't fit on my handlebars due to overhanging the basket; the thing was so dim that I depended more on any passing car headlights for light than I could get from that lamp.
After receiving this light, I discovered that it could be mounted on the front fork of the bike solving my basket issue {See Pictures}. In addition, the light is so bright that I can clearly see my way on dark paths even on only the medium setting (used to conserve battery). As for battery life, I have run the thing about 4 times a week for about an hour each trip for about three weeks. The batteries still appear strong. I love the versatility of the positioning too. While on the mount, it can be positioned up, down, or straight ahead with many varying degrees. I prefer down to light up the path before me. The weaker Bell headlamp is still attached to my basket and I use that one for eye level blinking so that I can be seen easily but the Princeton light allows me to see where I am going. I haven't tested the rain resistance yet - time will tell but I like the fact that it is supposedly waterproof. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase and plan to buy another for my husband's bike and maybe even a third to use as a spare or perhaps to attach to my helmet!

Bright, but bracket snapped and not waterproof, September 15, 2011
By bmega (Georgia)
|
|
This light is plenty bright, and I usually use it in flash mode (which seems slow) but the problems I've had seem to outweigh the benefits. I will sometimes commute in the rain, and my bike is parked outside when at work, further exposing it to rain on occasion. This light is not waterproof (at least mine is not). Rain seeps in with no problem. You need to check the manufacturer's website for their definitions of "waterproof". This light is rated as being able to withstand being held underwater at 1 meter for 30 minutes. Their definition of "waterproof" ranges essentially from you can sneeze on it up to scuba diving with it. I think using the word waterproof when they mean water resistant is misleading. Also, after having the light for less than one year, the bracket snapped under the weight of the light when I hit a divot in the road...nothing huge, just where a driveway meets the asphalt. When this happened I called the manufacturer to make a warranty claim and they were less than helpful. I informed them of the bracket and leakage problem and their tone was one of skepticism. I sent the item in and they did replace the bracket, but did nothing to correct the problem with the seal. I won't be buying a Princeton Tec item again.

This headlight is difficult to remove, although it has a "quick" release lever. To turn it off the recessed button must be pushed through the cycle of functions (bright, medium, dim, blinking). Maybe there is a reason it is sold by a third party seller rather than Amazon?

Versatile, durable & made in the USA!, September 10, 2010
By Ahikanana (HI)

I bought one at a local sporting goods store. Unfortunately they only had 1 in stock (I have 2 bikes), but they had the EOS lights without the ""bike"" which are popular among divers, but it only came with the headband & not any bike or pole mounts. Since the price difference was like $2 I thought it would be a better bargain to get the EOS bike & get all the attachments so I can go biking to my favorite fishing spot:) Since they weren't reordering soon I looked here on dentalBookshop for a second one. Hands down this is the best light. My title says it all. It works great & it's easy to change batteries & it doesn't fall off. 10 year warranty too!

good for the money, April 13, 2011

i bought thie light to replace a busch and meuller battery operated headlight after it broke.
the busch and meuller at 110 dollars is very bright and has good battery life with 4 AA rechargable batteries.
this light isnt in the same league but it is 45 bucks or so. it has a lightwieght and seemingly durable design. the brightest solid beam will adequatley light a narrow area in front of the bicycle in dark conditions - but it is good for city riding.
the flashing mode is probably where the light is best. a steady , very bright flash that is easy to make out.
bar mounting system is easy to use with a knurled tension screw. light also comes with bands for attatching to a hat and a eleastic headband to use the light on your head.
the light itself has a clip on the back so you can clip it to a backpack pocket as well. good extras, iow.
claims to be waterproof but havent found out yet.
3 solid beam intensities and on flash mode...rubber button activasted.
i have only burned the light continuoulsy for about an hour.

Extremely bright on the brightest setting, a little brighter than my Bell Dawn Patrol LED Headlight but it takes one less battery and drains super fast. came shipped with 3 duracell batteries that lasted about 15 minutes and when i opened the light to replace them one had leaked battery acid or whatever it is and left green corrosion on the spot where the battery is placed. very odd. compact shape and accessories are much better than the bell light but i'm unsure of which i like better.

this light is exactly what i was looking for. it comes with a bike mount, a velcro strap mount and an elastic headlamp type mount. the light has a nice focus and will help you identify any obstacle in your path. Each mode works well and it is easy to switch modes on the fly. I travel between lighted and non lighted streets and switch from low to high, depending on conditions. you will need a screw driver to adjust the mount.

I bought this light based on the reviews of other previous purchasers. I am very glad i did so. This is the first such light i am using so can not compare it to any other but i rate it excellent as it does all i'd expect and does it well i.e. light up the track well enough for me to get to destination. the size is very convenient. operating button very good and other attachments very useful. i'll comment on battery life after going through a few sets of batteries. I'm very happy with my dealing with Amazon, the item and the overall experience. I'll buy this again and highly recommend it .

Excellent light, December 2, 2011
By ann (seattle, wa)

Awesome, bright light for the battery usage and price. Only thing is the handlebar attachment could be better, plastic quality seems more brittle and lighter than other lights I have, making it chatter constantly as road vibration travels from bike to light. Quality of housing of actual light appears very good. But because this light is so bright for the long run-time on 3 AAA's, and competitively priced, I'd still highly recommend it, even if I had to zip-tie it onto the handlebars.

Nice little light!, October 3, 2011
By ereinsch
|
|
I looked at a ton of lighting systems, and finally settled on this one. I figured if all else, it's a fraction of the cost of a lot of the beefier ones, and I could use it on my helmet later if it wasn't enough. I have to say, it works well enough. I'm not any speed-racer, but it lets me see what I need to see at the speed I ride at. It doesn't lite up the world or anything, but it makes a nice well lit area in front of my bike, and I'm happy with it. Perhaps it could be a little brighter... but everyone probably thinks that when they buy a bike light in this range; and for what I paid for it, I'm very pleased. I can't say how fast I got on it, but probably about 10-12 mph pretty comfortably. Problem was, when I was hauling down the road, I couln't read my speed gauge (no light).
As an added bonus, it works very well for working in the engine compartment of my car. Small, bright, I just wedge or rest it where I need light. :)

Came ready to use. Mounted in a matter of minutes. This light is super bright (good for riding in complete darkness) and has 3 levels of brighness plus a flashing mode. The only downside, but not really a design flaw, is that the LED's beam is fairly narrow which is typical of LEDs. I am planning on purchasing a second to give a wider field of view.

Awesome light!, September 28, 2011

Bought this light for my daily commute in the city. It has been a good purchase. Easy to set up on the handle bar. Feels solid and weather proof. Has a sturdy handle bar mount. Even though it has only one LED bulb it gives out sufficient light to see the road even with oncoming cars and motor bikes. It has two modes of operation. In the first mode it switches on to give a full power light and switches off. When it switched on the next time, it automatically goes to the second mode. In this mode the light switches on to full power, pressing the on/off button gives a slightly dimmer light, another press of the button produces even dimmer light, the third press gets it into blinking mode on full power and the last press switches it off. Have ridden in pouring rain with these lights without any issues. The waterproof sealing is good. Performed extremely well while riding in rain. The three AAA batteries last me about a fortnight on a single recharge with a 1.5hr usage time daily. This light will give you very good value for money. Very much recommended.

If you don't have 2 or 3 hundred dollars to spend on a light - this is the one for you. Good beam, several beam option and can be bike or helmet mounted. I use this on helmet with a monster rechargeable on the bike - excellent combo.I can see the whole road / trail and still light when I look off to the side.

This light works great. It really exceeds my expectation to compensate my bad vision in the night. It, of course, deserves the highest rating.
