About Allen Bike Racks: In 1967, after a few years of working on the aerospace technology for the Apollo missions, Dick Allen was out of a job. Government cutbacks led Allen, a Harvard-trained physicist, to transform his garage hobby into a new industry. A cycling enthusiast, inventor, and family man, Allen had a personal need for a bike-carrying device. On weekends, he would take his sons and wife to Cape Cod or the White Mountains of New Hampshire. What proved difficult time and again was the transport of his family's bicycles. Rather than fight through inconvenience with twine and a dinged car, Allen sought an answer for himself as well as a market in which he foresaw major growth possibilities. Always a pathfinder, Allen took to work in his Lincoln, Massachusetts garage in search of a more efficient way to transport bikes. Drafting designs during the day and constructing them throughout the night, he put together a model made of electrical conduit, metal strapping, and fire hose casings (for padding). At first, the Allens tested the prototype on weekend excursions. Finding the first trunk-mounted rack to be a success, Dick started Allen Bike Racks. Dealer acceptance came quickly, and by 1971 Allen Bike Racks were sold nationally through a number of major bicycle distributors. Today, the company owns over three-dozen patents and offers a versatile product line of bike racks while Dick's son Alex now owns and operates the business. What started out as a small garage run operation now operates three warehouses nationally, two factories abroad, and has products sold in more than a dozen countries around the world. Allen 3-Bike Premium, August 10, 2009

She's sturdy. We drove 490 miles with it this weekend and it was great.
Easy installation, quick release allows it to fold down easily, and another quick release allows it to tilt out of the way for liftgate access.
Very satisfied.

Nice Sturdy Unit, October 19, 2009

Bought this bike rack to use on the back of our class c motorhome. The rack was very easy to assemble. I noticed right away the construction was superior to other racks I have looked at (this is a heavy rack) with all parts fitted and finished nicely. Look forward to many miles of use with this unit!

Good bike rack. Tight fit for 3, September 27, 2010

This has been a good bike rack. We just got back from an 800 mile trip. One problem we encountered; It will not easily hold three regular road bikes. The spacing is really too close. Also if you have a small frame bike, you may have problems fitting it over the arms. ( too wide )I solved both problems by building an extension that added length and was a bit narrower. It seemed to work ok. There may be better racks available but this one was pretty good for the price.

Sturdy and convenient, May 18, 2011
By D. Lutz (Sparta, MI)

I can load or unload three bikes within 5 minutes or so and have confidence to haul them for any distance. The tie-down straps fit very snugly with ease and convenience and should adjust to fit any bike. Usually the only minor challenge is making sure the pedals are in the correct spot and weaving the sway strap through the spokes just right. The first time putting your bikes on may require some trial and error to find the best way to mount them where they don't rub against each other wrong. I would think that would be the case with any bike rack. We leave it on all summer so we can head to the bike trail any time, with only minor inconvenience if we want to use the back hatch of our minivan. The no-wobble bolt works great, but it did get rusted out after having the rack on all summer. I bought some extras from the company's website to be sure I will always have that solid connection. Buying regular bolts from the hardware store just wasn't the same. I bought this 535RR as a replacement for the 435RR model that got bent into the rear window in a rear end collision. I liked that model slightly better then this one. This one looks nicer, but I'm suspicious of the mechanism that allows you to drop the carry arms up or down. It works great now, but will it work after years of exposure? Also, this model requires an extra step when lowering the whole unit down to clear the rear hatch. Like the 435RR, you pull on a knob to lower and just push up to raise and lock in place. But there is now an additional step- you have to mess with a pin. The pin is on a tether so you don't lose it and it really isn't difficult to mess with it, it's just a step I didn't have to deal with in the previous model. The biggest problem is that the strap they give you to minimize the bikes from swaying and lock the tires in place is WAY too short. I'm glad I have the one from the old model - it's twice as long. Too long really, but the one that came with the new model is unusable. The one from the previous model works great to weave through spokes without getting snagged and once in place, those bikes aren't going anywhere. Despite my disappointments with the changes in the new model, this is still a very sturdy rack and incredibly convenient to use. Definitely recommend.

Works Fine But Not As Convenient As I Was Hoping, July 10, 2011
By muibien

My family are recreational bikers so we didn't want to spend a lot on a rack. The rack itself was easy to install but not as easy to load as I had hoped; we have mostly non-typical bike frames (kid's and women's frames)and even with (absolutely necessary) extender bars (an additional purchase) it took a lot of force and maneuvering to get them on the frame. However, once the bikes were loaded it was easy to secure them and I was impressed with how stable the rack was....very little movement of the bikes.
My big complaint with this rack is the pin that you have to remove in order to lower the rack to access the back of a vehicle. It is almost impossible to get in or out when the bikes are on the rack, making it very inconvenient to use. A real bummer and so I can't give this product a better rating.

Does the job, October 28, 2011

I was looking for a bike rack that fit in my class 2 hitch (1-1/4") and was built substantially well. The Allen does a pretty good job albeit I have a couple of "nits" about it. First off, it is a great design; I can get my Dodge Magnum rear hatch door open with the rack in place, which helps. It has no flex that I can tell fore and aft.
First "nit": They give you a special bolt to supposedly stop if from swaying side to side which basically did not work that well. I had it seated good, and for the first ~100 miles it worked OK, but it was swaying pretty good at the end of a ~800 mile run. FYI, I had 2 aluminum cruiser bikes on it - rack is rated for 3 bikes. When I pulled the bolt back out it had worn pretty good on the shouldered end, so I've got to think about a replacement now - which brings up my second "nit".
I bought the Allen because it was an American company and "I thought" manufactured as well. No, it's manufactured in China under the guise of the Vero Beach, FL headed company. While that doesn't bother many, I do try and buy American even if it's more (as the Allen was). The bolt in particular was that cheap china type you see in other things you get from over there altho the rack itself is built well IMO, just the hardware could use an upgrade. I did contact and voice my disappointment to Allen and they replied that they need to stay competitive and stand behind their products 100% - I suggested that they send their customer service to India and that would save them some more; no reply to that...

Excellent Value, October 26, 2011
By Photoangler (Northern Illinois)

As the title of this review says the Allen Premium 3-Bike carrier is an excellent value. It is solidly constructed and has features of much more expensive hitches.
The horizontal support bars that hold the bikes provide solid support. The rubber cradles in which the bikes rest protect the bikes' finish and with the straps hold the bikes securely. The arms fold down quickly and easily for storage.
The upright support post is solid (and heavy). It can also be folded with the bikes loaded to give access to the hatch, trunk or tailgate. The folding mechanism is a bit more cumbersome than with my previous carrier but is extremely secure. There is a rod that fits through holes in the support arm and the interior bracket. You must pull a locking pin off the end of the rod then pull the rod out of the hitch. At that point the upright support can tilt away from the vehicle giving access to the rear of the vehicle. With the rod and pin in place the upright is absolutely locked and secure.
The hitch comes with anti-wobble bolts for both 1.25 inch and 2 inch receivers. For use with 2 inch receivers there is also a sleeve that fits over the square bar that goes into the receiver. This is a pretty versatile carrier.
The carrier comes with a nylon strap that can be put through the bikes' wheels and around the upright post to prevent the bikes from swinging.
The only issue I've had is the 1.25 inch receiver on my Outback seems to be a bit non-standard and the anti-wobble bolt, while it holds the carrier securely, does not prevent left/right wobbling. This is an issue with my hitch rather than the Allen carrier. Other than that the carrier has worked as it should. The reason I haven't rated it five stars is that I believe the folding mechanism could be improved. I highly recommend this carrier.

Wobbles too much., May 15, 2012
By KAT3 (Texas)

I got this bike rack for a 1.25 hitch. I like the rack itself but it wobbles. The plastic adapters that come with it do not help at all. I am very unhappy and do not use it. I ordered it during off season and recently tried it and discovered the problem. It's too late to return now.

Solid, easy to use and install. Highly recommend this rack. I have two hybrids and they never moved on an 800 mile trip. Could easily hold a third bike.
