2.0 out of 5 stars.  Terribly designed power button., November 5, 2008
By same_nice_lamb (Milwaukee, WI USA)
I would give this 5 stars. It's bright and the clasping mechanism seems solid. However, the power button is very poorly designed. It is easy to see in Amazon's product photo that the power button is the same size and shape as the three LEDs and lined up with them. This button is very sensitive, and with how far it sticks out from the unit it is very easy to bump the button. Forget putting the light in a bag or pocket when not in use. I have opened my bag in the morning to find that the button was bumped in the night and left on all night. Very inefficient. If you plan on keeping this mounted to your bike at all times, that may be fine. Do not expect to take this off and easily place it into a back or pocket, however.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  An art object, not a safety light., July 28, 2009
By Paul Facio (Portland, Oregon, USA)
These caught my attention at a local bike shop. They looked unconventionally designed, but came recommended by the staff. First the pros:

* Easy to mount.
* Very stylish.

But the gekko's style is without function: the silicone casing tears with remarkable ease when batteries need changing, and the power button is so large as to make placing the gekko into a backpack, or pocket, a near certain way of turning it on and draining it's batteries while it lies unattended.

The light I received also seemed to "forget" about the batteries placed inside. My gekko will stop flashing after minutes (with new batteries inside of it, mind you). If needed, I can buy another five minutes of on-off blinking through prying open the light's casing, taking out the AAA's and reinserting them. Imagine having to stop on a nightly commute 12 times an hour to do this, and you'll have a sense of my antipathy for this product.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Garbage, September 11, 2010
By J. Lawler
Bought this from a bike store in town. Died after about 2 months of use, and never worked that great in the first place. The button didn't always respond, and the thing would occasionally shut itself off while I was riding. Not the kind of behavior you want to see out of a safety light. Am now running some Planet Bike lights and love 'em.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  POS Should have a warning: DO NOT GET WET!, January 22, 2011
By J. L. Miller
These lights are kinda cool at first, but don't get too attached, because at the end of the day they suck. God forbid anyone would actually bike in wet weather, because you get one drop of water on these suckers and they will die. Kind of ironic for a light named after a lizard that probably would survive total submersion. But that is neither here nor there. They should put a warning on these things that under NO circumstances should you expose them to water! Plus the inner electronics of these puppies are a joke. Even in high humidity they would probably rust and not only break, but ruin your batteries. I had it happen. And lastly the on/off button is WAY to easy to activate so these will turn on just sitting in your backpack and then when you put them on to bike home at night, boom they are dead, nice work Knog, wtf. STAY AWAY!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Simple and great and uses AAA battery., May 3, 2009
By v.l (appleton wi)
This is a simple product that is not flashy and will not attract the attention of thieves. It is very simple to take on and off and is does not seem to mind a quick rain. Best of all, it uses a normal AAA battery- no expensive and short lived button batteries. Great product.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  The HORROR! The HORROR! Terrible flawed light., July 30, 2011
By Visit my Amazon Profile page! (Bay Area, CA)
Do not be fooled by the pretty looking picture. They could not have designed a worse light. There is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING keeping water, dirt, or anything else off of the batteries and circuit board. The batteries and the bare circuit board are right just sitting there under the rubbery wrapper with NO EFFORT BY KNOG TO SEAL OUT WATER AT ALL! This is the worst designed light I have ever seen for a BICYCLE. Where do you bike? You bike OUTDOORS! This is an indoor only type of product sold for outdoor use. Shame on Knog. The Boomer is 100% the opposite. Do no even consider this light for one single second.

Do not buy this light!

Buy the Knog Boomer - 100% the opposite.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  not that bright, October 14, 2010
By willow's mommy
i have been riding with this light for over a year and it has got me through it safely on my regular night commute...... recently one of the kids i work with was riding his bike next to me and i noticed his light was much brighter .... when we compared the 2 side to side you could see the difference ........the gekko did not stand on a chance to the knog frog strobe .... so i would say if you want something bright get a frog strobe ..... its much brighter than the gekko =)

sorry writing from my wifes account=)

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Too many modes, November 7, 2010
By CH (Colorado, USA)
Works great, my one compliant is that there are too many modes that one must cycle through to turn it off. Blinking 1-2-3 up the row and then the next mode 3-2-1 down the row really isn't necessary. I have a under-seat bag attached to the seat tube, so I use the angled feature "inverted" by strapping it the rear triangle of the bike's frame.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great light, August 21, 2010
By A Customer
I've had this light for about a year and love it. I use it on the back of my helmet in addition to a strobe under my saddle. I've taken it on and of many times and it has been very sturdy. It is easy to turn on and off but it does take some pressure. It's quite visible and does not go through batteries quickly.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Bright and Tough, February 2, 2010
By Mark J. Reid
When mounted at the right angle, the LEDs create a remarkably bright flash even during the day. The design also protects them from the average spill my eight year old boy routinely experiences.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent Quality and Price, October 20, 2011
By Ryan
It seems this product is failing for some people after only owning it for a short period of time. I've never had this problem. The only reason I'm taking a star off this rating is because this light will sometimes turn on after you put it in your backpack. This is due to the design of the power button.

I bought my Gekko headlight about 3 years ago, and I still use it every time I hop on my bike at night.

Pros:
-Excellent quality and workmanship (I've changed the batteries many times; no tears, nor do I ever feel like it will tear.)
-Extremely flexible--can fit a lot of positions on a bike. I put mine vertically on the curve on one of the sides of my track bars. However, you will have difficulty fitting this over bars that are wrapped with bar tape or covered with grips. These Knog lights fit best on bare bars (metal).
-Super bright--however, you would not want to use this to light up a path in front of you. This light is for making sure others can see you, that's it. With 3 blinding LEDs, you're set with the Gekko.
-Inexpensive
-Battery life--very good. Just don't run these lights constantly. Mine has two flashing modes, plus the constant mode. I very rarely have to replace the batteries, and I only use the flashing modes.
-Battery replacement--very quick and easy.

Cons:
-It will probably turn on when you toss it in your backpack. The only way to get around this that I know of is to not pack your bag completely full of stuff. That way there is less stuff moving inside your bag that has a chance of touching the power button and turning it on. I commute with a large Timbuk2 messenger bag which is mostly empty most of the time. I throw it in one of the deep pockets inside my bag and it rarely turns on, although it has happened. And I do recommend never leaving these lights on your bike, because they are extremely easy to steal, and everyone likes Knog lights.
-I tried it once on my road bike, which has my wireless cyclocomputer. I'm not sure why, but mounting the light near the display really threw off my computer. I never did that again. Now I only use this on my fixed gear bikes, which do not have mounted computers. If you have a wireless cyclocomputer, I suggest not buying this light. Get some kind of headlamp or helmet light.

A few more things:

I've seen some sites that say this light has 5 modes, and some places say 3. Let me tell you that my Gekko that I purchased around 2008-2009 has 3 light modes, 2 of which are blinking (fast blink and slow blink). This is all you really need. I almost never use the constant mode. Fast blink is best for busy areas, and slow blink will save you more battery, but is best for low-traffic areas. Also, keep in mind I never worry about battery life on this thing. It really does last.

Another battery-related note: I think this light has a low-battery detector, which is a dim green LED inside the silicon body that blinks every so often. I don't really understand this feature. It seems to blink most of the time, even if my batteries are relatively new. I've seen this green light blinking and still used the same set of batteries for months before having to replace them. It's pretty strange, but it doesn't matter because the batteries last a long time. If anyone can provide some insight as to the purpose of the green light, and when and how often it is supposed to blink, that would be great.

Lastly, I NEVER leave this light on my bike when locked up somewhere. It would have been stolen a thousand times already if i did that. Furthermore, Knog says this light is very resistant to the elements. While I believe that, since I always take it with me after locking my bike up, my Gekko has never truly be tested as far as being exposed to the elements. I'm sure it would stand up to snow/rain/ice/you name it, but there is no reason you should be leaving this light on your bike anyway, so just get over it and take it with you after you park your bike. It takes just a couple seconds to mount and unmount any Knog light.

All of that being said, I just purchased and received today the Knog Skink 4-LED red tail light. I haven't used it yet, but it seems to be just as solid as the Gekko, but the power switch is very small and rigid, so it seems there is almost no chance of this light turning on inside your backpack. At just $23, it's just a few more bucks than the Gekko, brighter, and has a slightly better design with the power switch. It also has more blinking modes. Definitely check the Skink out (headlight or tail light). If you want to save a few bucks, go with the Gekko. You will not be disappointed if you take care of it.
