1.0 out of 5 stars.  Cheap plastic junk stopped working after a few weeks BEWARE!!, July 21, 2009
By Bacchus (Philadelphia, PA United States)
I was disappointed as soon as this item arrived in the mail, when I saw the tiny box it was packed in. Even moreso when I opened it, to find it was constructed entirely out of thin brittle plastic, the kind they used to make the old cheap transistor radios out of. I could only imagine how the sun and rain would erode this thing.

I should have cut my losses on the shipping charges and returned it immediately, but instead decided not to judge a book by its cheesy cover. I installed the thing on the front of my carport, and was happy to see it light up the first time I tested it. (This is no doubt the point where other reviewers decided to post their glowing reviews).

A few weeks later I noticed that the lights failed to turn on when I moved past the sensor. First chance I had I took it down and opened it up. I figured that the battery might have been defective, or old when they sent it. I'd try a new rechargeable battery and hopefully that'd fix it.

I got another nasty surprise at that point: the battery is hard-wired in so when it goes bad, it'll take an electrician just to change it. Which means that at the most, even if the unit you receive is better built than mine was, you'll end up replacing the entire unit once the battery expires (which they do, usually after a year or two if you live in a four seasons area).

When I went to remove the tiny transistorized control panel, the lights went on. Great, I thought. It isn't the battery, or the LEDs. Now all I need to do is figure out what the problem is.

To make a long (time wasted) story short, there was no way I could get the motion sensor to work, and as soon as I screwed the item back together the lights failed to work again.

The best I could hope for, if I wanted to keep wasting time on it, was to get the LEDs to turn on full-time, and stay on as long as the solar charge held. This mean they'd be on all day and night, and most likely once the charge drained it would just keep draining before building up another charge strong enough to power the lights.

Bottom line: this thing is very POORLY engineered with CHEAP parts that are likely fail soon after you purchase it. It probably costs under $3 to manufacture in some slave shop in China, so it's incredibly overpriced at over $30 with shipping.

It's no wonder there is only a 30 day guarantee on this POS.

I will never by another product from this company again.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Worse than a Flashlight!!!, November 16, 2009
By M. Austin (Los Angeles, CA)
I took it out of the box and was excited at first. Yes the plastic is cheap, but it does work. THE ONLY PROBLEM is that the light is DIM!!! I was shocked. 15 LED bulbs! you would think it would blind you. Either the batteries were weak or the device is flawed (although I did charge the battery in sun for two days. Luckily I tested it before mounting it.

I have cheap LED flashlights that are BRIGHTER THAN THIS "security light". It emits a bluish light that's around a 2 foot diameter spot. After that there is a VERY faint bluish glow that doesn't illuminate anything. If you placed it on a roof it would light only ONE trash can! DON'T waste your money. Sadly it is only worth $30 but performs worse; now I'll have to spend more money. At least the return process is simple. Still waiting on my $30 refund.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  nice light, does the job, and saves energy, July 21, 2009
By One of Amazon's Best Customers (Pennsylvania)
This was an easy to install item. It is attached to the shed across from my house and the light is angled toward my side door. All I have to do is begin to open the door and the light turns on. In the dark of night, the light is more than sufficiently bright. It has been great to let the dog out and allow her to move about and she triggers the light and comes to the door. I would really recommend this clean and green lighting resource.

Update three months later: Working flawlessly, even in the shorter days of autumn. Bright, does the job, easy for me to hook and unhook the dog leashes from their collars at night. If I had the need, I would get another one of these, for sure.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  More than happy, May 28, 2009
By Clarkplus (APO, AE, United States)
The product arrived very quickly. Actually much quicker than I had anticipated. I put the solar panel in a good place to get lots of sun then set the light up to illuminate my back patio everytime my cat wanted in the house. Worked like a charm.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Its easy, September 12, 2009
By Ronald Mallory Jr.
I bought this unit to replace one that became water damaged. The HEATH unit was comparable to this one. This unit however was cheaper and so easy to install. I just put it up and it worked "brilliantly". Quick and simple, this nice sealed unit may not have the option to buy the standard rechargeable "AA" batteries but for $33 dollars and the plug an play feature I'm sold. This unit responds well and the lighting is better than the other , an stays lit for about 3 minutes. Perfect for the stairwell on our deck.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  The disappointed win, December 19, 2009
By Thomas Ahern (Foster, RI USA)
Plus: it does exactly what you hope. It pours for a few seconds a moon-bright clear light on the path. BUT.... It is made from crap. After 6 months outside, all the plastic broke without much effort. If there is an armored version of this, buy it. If not, expect to be disappointed within months.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Cheap Manufactured Garbage, March 23, 2010
By Dave (Denver, CO, United States)
I had to take this cheap light apart to fix the switch. Inside, I found several wires pinched and crimped. Who knows how long this piece of junk will last? This is my second light of this type from two different manufacturers and vendors. What they have in commons is that they are probably manufactured by children in a country without standards. What should I expect for $40? I guess I know now.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Satisfied customer, October 16, 2010
By Teresa Brabec (Las Vegas, NV United States)
I am very happy with this product. Considering the price of similar items, this is a good value. We placed the light in our driveway, which is along the house. It is so sensitive that when we first hit the edge of our property with the car, the light comes on. It remains on long enough for us to reach the back door and unlock it. While it is not an extremely bright light, it illuminates enough that I feel comfortable walking in and out of the door, knowing that if someone were outside the light would alert me. It is not large nor does it extend beyond a medium sized area, but it works for what I needed it to do.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  LED Solar Powered Security Light, October 3, 2010
By biskit732003 (Louisiana, USA)
This device emits an amazing amount of light for its size. I couldn't find anything near this quality for the price. It is perfect for the area near the rear of my house where I had that one dark spot. The sensor is not adjustable but it is set just right. The light does not stay on very long after the motion stops which is good since it is battery operated because this saves the battery power. My only complaint is that there were no operating instructions. The thing was easy enough to figure out, though.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Will not last a year., December 18, 2009
By bheetoy (Fallon, NV)
The product arrived with good external packaging but the actual box it came in was one level above paper. The product itself did not look structural good but I tried it anyway. It lasted the whole summer but after fall and winter in Northern Nevada environment, it stopped working. The actual light needs protection from the outside elements. The screws are crap since they rusted after one exposure to rain and the solar panel started disintegrating after some rain. To make this product last for you, take it indoors after the summer. Put a plastic bag if you think it's going to rain. The plastic material is not strong enough to withstand rain and snow. Also, if you buy "MADE IN CHINA", its not going to last. For the price I paid, it's not worth it. This is more like an expensive toy.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Works well, August 15, 2010
By rivetchic (Yorba Linda, CA)
I bought this for the side yard so that I can see when I take out the recyclables and trash after dark. It was simple to install and works well, It's not as bright and doesn't have the range that some of the more expensive $90 led motion lights I've purchased, but it lights up the side yard area well. If you are trying to light up a larger area (such as a back yard) I'd look for the more expensive ones with the two lights you can mount on the corner. I'm happy with the purchase for the price I paid. This would also work well as a patio or porch light so you can see to unlock the door.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great power for a small device, November 2, 2009

This is a great lamp setup for a very small device. The light does the job very well. The only drawback is that it is a little "soft" on the mechanism to adjust the position of the light / panel.

I needed a security light that would be pretty much stand alone and trouble free. This one fit the bill perfectly. Easy to install and fairly bright. The motion sensor is quite sensitive so that the area covered is well lit if any motion is detected.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Exactly what I needed!, November 15, 2009
By Sushi Broker (San Diego CA)
There's a dark area on the side of our house. This area should really have a switchable outside light but it doesn't. My wife stores our outdoor trashcans in this area. When I take the trash out every nite I always say "This area needs a lite." But electricians ain't cheap. So I bought this little lite thinking that it probably wouldn't work. Wow... was I surprised. This lite is small and looks cheap but it does exactly what I need it to do. It installed easily and only needed 1/2 day of sun light to charge it. I think I'll order another one of these lites right now.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Better than expected, May 28, 2010
By D. M. Baringer
I am gone for several hours at a time, and I did't want to waste electricity by leaving the outside light on. This little light is perfect for my use. When I pull in the car activates the motion sensor and the light is bright enough for me to see my way into the house. Two of my neighbors came over and inspected it for their own property. This light is a little pricey but with the money I save on electric, it's worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Bright & Responsive, December 28, 2009
By Ann Cook (Studio City, CA United States)
We had a different solar motion sensor light and I should have listened to the other posters about the impossibility of getting replacement batteries. It ended up getting returned. This little gem, however, will be around for the duration. The LED lights snap on with only a hint of movement and shine quite brightly. I thought one of them was broken, but my assistant remarked, "It's been raining for three days." Oh, right. The whole solar thing. But then, the sun came out again and all is good.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  solar light, October 11, 2011
By bcoll
I love these solar lights. I have 2 on my big garage , and although they are not the brightest, they work just like they are supposed to.My yard was so dark, couldnt see a thing when you drove in, because i live in a rural area, and they are great. They turn on and lighten up the yard so you can see really well.I used to have a big solar light from my power company, and the cost was outrageous. I got rid of it, and for the price of $33 and no power bills, these little lights are the best.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Solar Powered 15 LED Security Light and Motion Detector, February 18, 2012
By In the dark
Electronically, this product really shines! (Pun intended) Even mounted fifteen feet from the ground, the motion detector works without fail, and the LED lights are just bright enough to light the walking area without being obnoxiously 'in your face' bright. Being solar powered is a real boon. Installation was a snap as there was no wiring to be dealt with. My only complaint is the cheap plastic mounting bracket, that cracked with the first screw. If I never take it down, and why would I, it should not be a problem, but a metal bracket to mount the light would make more sense.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Gets the job done for small spaces, June 4, 2011
By Scott Yanoff (Wisconsin)
I waited several months before writing this evaluation so that I had enough usage to properly evaluate it. I put the solar panel on the roof of my one-car garage with the light attached to the side of the garage. I have it lighting up the side of the garage between my garage and a neighbor's garage, which is a distance of several feet. I use it so that when I go outside at night to empty the days food scraps into the compost bin back there I can see what I am doing.

At first, the light would come on sporadically. I got this late in the year and snow came quickly and the light was not coming on frequently. Later, when the snow thawed, I got up on the ladder and moved the solar panel to a spot higher on the garage roof and angled it a bit differently. I don't know if it is the lack of snow or the change in placement on my garage roof (where it may now be out of the way of some tree branches) but the light works consistently now.

Yes, this is mostly plastic but both the light and the solar panel swivel, which means you have endless combinations for angles to try. The cord is really long. My solar panel is several feet up on the roof of the garage and I ran the cord down over the eaves and plugged it into the light, which is on the side of the garage. The light output is pretty decent since I put the light high up and angled it downward. It's enough to at least illuminate the space between my garage and my neighbor's, and given the low price of this system, I think it's a good deal. My only complaint was that there is a light switch on this that is a push-button and it's not obvious whether or not you want it in or out for the light to turn on. TIP: pre-charge the light in the house and try it out there before taking the time to mount it.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Warning - do not buy, April 9, 2011
By nonamespecified
this unit is very poorly designed and constructed, the motion detector feature does not work, and the light is very weak for distances other than less than 10 feet or so, also a solar light should be designed for outdoors use but this is not suitable for outdoors use, as rain can easily get into it, i sent it back for a refund
