Decent bottle, but a little pricey, May 8, 2009
By Hawkeye (San Antonio, TX United States)

I tried one of these Camelbak Podium Chill insulated bottle and I wasn't bowled over. The locking valve can adjust the amount of water flow was an ok idea. I would probably keep the valve unlocked and at it's max so I can drink and bike at the same time. I like how much water you can sqeeze out of the bottle and I like the self closing valve.
I find that the bottle volume is too small 21 oz. for long bike rides. The bottle also doesn't keep water as cold or as long as the 24 oz. Polar Insulated bottle. The bottle is a fair fit on my 15" frame MTB on my upright tube and well on the down tube.
Overall the bottle works, but I would buy the Polar bottle because it keeps drinks cooler longer, has a bigger capacity, is cheaper, and the 20 oz. bottle fit my upright tube better because it's 1/4" shorter than the Camelbak bottle.

Not for bikes, March 27, 2010
By Band Dad (Orlando, FL)
|
|
I love the way the opening works on this bottle. The only problem is that there is no good way to clean it. On the bike, the nozzle collects dirt. The dirt sticks to the outside of the nozzle (natural property of the soft material) and you can't take it apart to clean the inside of the nozzle. You are always drinking whatever dirt has collected in the open nozzle. It's kind of gross. If you are a runner, camper, backpacker, or just want to use this in your gym bag, I would recommend it. I have used this for a few hundred miles on the bike, and I would not recommend it for that purpose.

doesn't insulate that well, June 8, 2009
By B. Creighton
|

Superior valve (which drew me to the product) and plastic of the bottle is less stiff than other insulated bottles but it doesn't seem to insulate too well. The Polar insulated bottles and Nanogelite Elite bottles insulate better but lack the great valve of the Camelbak.

Best Bottle Around, August 9, 2009
By Kring (Connecticut)
|
|
This is the best bottle around, I agree with the other reviewer that it does not insulate very well, but it does manage to delay warming. The best part of this bottle is the valve, this is the highest flow water bottle that you can either suck out or squeeze. I will never go back to the old tooth cracking pull-spout.
I've used the Polar Bottles which insulate better, but still don't last very long and they utilze the same 100 year old poorly designed spout... this is a much better bottle if you are trying to decide between the Camelbak and Polar... get the Camelbak! Oh and it's BPA free!

Great bottle, worth the money, September 11, 2009
By D. Mikulka
|
|
This bottle is fantastic, fill it up, throw a few ice cubes in and it stays cool throughout my entire ride. The spout can be left 'unlocked' without any leaking (even if the bottle is turned upside down) and is easy to squeeze water out of.

It's the taste, February 14, 2011
By Rob Levin (New York, NY United States)
|
|
I have 4 of these bottles. 2 for me and 2 for my wife
First the pro:
Love the jet valve and soft body which makes it easier to squeeze and the BPA free material which is why I bought it in the first place.
I use it for cycling and the gym
con:
The taste. I use the bottles for water and energy drinks. The problem I am experiencing is that once you have used it for an energy drink it seems to be impossible to get the taste of that drink out of the bottle when you switch to water. The internal material seems to absorb the contents and then releases it very slowly.
I was travelling from NYC to LA and to save space I put a small shampoo in the bottle. A drop must have leaked out and now the bottle tastes like shampoo. After 3 days of soaking and rinsing the taste is still there to the point that I bought a Polar bottle a) to try out and b) because I may have to dump the Camebak.
If you are going to use it for energy drinks don't switch back to water BUT it worries me that I can't get the residual taste out and makes me wonder what material they are using internally and how good it is for me.

camelbak podium chill bottle race edition, April 16, 2011
By sparklelove
|
|
This bottle is very sleek and attractive. all the prints are on the 'chill layer,' not on the exterior of the bottle, so i know they won't peel off from washing it numerous times.
speaking of the functional aspect, the bottle is easy to squeeze, the "always open, always closed" spout is nice because all you have to do is to squeeze the bottle to get the water out because it's "always open" and yet the water does not leak through the spout even if you hold the bottle upside down because it's "always closed" as long as you don't squeeze the bottle. This feature is something that Polar bottles do not have. This bottle is also easier to clean than Polar bottles because the less contoured design. Overall, I am very satisfied with the switch I made.

Works great, September 23, 2009
By R. Anglin (Tucson, AZ USA)
|
|
The bottle works exactly as designed. It keeps liquids insulated, although we're not talking the same as keeping the bottle in the fridge or something. I haven't tried it outdoors yet (bought so I could have cold water at my desk), but judging by my use of it I would think it would be great on a ride or hike. The valve on this bottle is very cool, I don't think it's possible to spill liquid out of the bottle unless you launched the thing over a cliff or something. I would definitely recommend the product. (I knocked a star off of it because it takes more force to squeeze than a standard bike bottle, although that is understandable due to the insulation).

nice bottle, innovative but LEAKS, March 29, 2011

Nice design, squeeze for water, you don't have to open anything.
Unfortunately, my bottle LEAKS around the seal between the bottle and the screw-on top. Could be just my bottle, but I won't buy another one to find out.

Perfect for Scotch & Coke, February 23, 2011
By hardwired (NC)
|
|
I have tried this bottle as well as the Polar bottle, and I agree with all the other posters: slightly less insulated, less capacity, nozzle collects dirt, etc.
But the pros outweigh the cons: more comfortable valve, much easier to squeeze
Best of all, it is the perfect size for 1 can of diet coke + double shot of scotch + enough ice cubes to last the duration. When you are sitting in a lawn chair under your wide brim hat, enjoying an open-air concert, and you've brought home made popcorn and your favorite adult beverage, this bottle is UNBEATABLE.

Great for sending to school with kids, September 6, 2010
By Liz (OH USA)
|
|
I love the chill jacket podium. It is great for sending to school because the valve is no leak and the bottle does not sweat. This can be such a huge problem for elementary aged children, either you send water at room temperature or it will sweat all over their desk and papers. And we have had bottles leak in the backpack either on the way to school, home or in the locker (with the bottle upside down). We take them to the pool in the summer and to the gym year round. I can throw all the others in the trash because this is the only one I use now.

I plan to buy one or two more..., July 2, 2010
By Transplant Recipient (USA)
|
|
For a long time I was using the plain, non-insulated water bottles from the bike shop. Recent hot weather has been making the water tepid in under an hour. I usually stuff as many ice cubes into the bottle and fill with cold tap water before riding. No freezing overnight, just fill and go. But warm water, half to a third through my ride was getting me down. So I decided to look into the insulated type.
But there were enough negative reviews to make me hesitate. So I looked around for a local bike shop that had Camelbak Podium bottles in stock, to see and feel one before buying. Found one. The shop owner said if I wasn't happy with it I could bring it back for a refund, that's how confident he was that I'd like it. The screw top lid does not leak, the dirt collection is minimal, and the flow valve/squeeze function is very nice.
After several weeks of use, I'm convinced too. It keeps the water cold for at least 2 to 3 hours. Any longer, and a "bicycle bottle" is not the appropriate container anyway. After 3 hours, and drinking most of the water, there were still a few little ice chips in the bottle. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is the price. I am planning buy 1 or 2 more to have as spares, or take along for extra thirsty days.

CAMELBAK PODIUM 21 OZ. CHILL JACKET INSULATED BOTTLE, May 8, 2010
By LOVE TO READ (Florida)
|
|
I have owned this type of bottle before, and just loved it. It fits nicely into my water bottle cage on my bicycle. Sadly, I use a water bottle everywhere I go, and I left it somewhere by mistake. Oops, big time, because I really enjoyed using it. It does not insulated as much as is indicated by its name, but it does keep drinks cool for a medium period of time. It is very easy to use and has a valve that can be turned to open or close depending on whether you wish to have it open while riding. I would highly recommend buying this bottle, because of the ease of its use, the opening valve, and the feel of the bottle. Also, this bottle is BPA free; there fore, you don't get that nasty plastic taste when you drink from this container.
I have solved the problem of having my water cool down too quickly. The night before I ride or work in the yard, I freeze my bottle with, of course, water or some energy drink. Even better, put ice cubes up to half way in the bottle and THEN add water. Freeze over night. This keeps the water REALLY COLD and then cool for my entire ride. GET THIS BOTTLE. IT IS WELL WORTH THE MONEY!!!
Well, I just purchased my 3rd Camelbak, and I wouldn't go with any other bottle. JUST REMEMBER MY SUGGESTION FROM THE PARAGRAPH ABOVE, AND YOUR WATER WILL STAY COLD. If you fill this container with ice and then the rest with water, your water WILL stay cold.

Great bottle for cycling, September 24, 2009
By JMC (NJ)
|
|
I have been using two of these bottles for over two months (July, August, September). I always put as much ice as the bottle allows and the rest is water or some other liquid. My rides are usually between 2-4 hours.
So far, even after three hours the liquid is still on the cool side, never warm. If you want your water to be ice cold, then I sugguest that you carry a beach cooler on your back.
The point I'm trying to make is that when you are on a bike you don't want anything heavy or bulky. To me, this bottle meets its intended use, which is to keep liquids cool for a couple of hours.

Wonderful water bottle., August 27, 2009
By Gregory (Akron, Ohio United States)
|

As a college student looking for a good way to stay hydrated on campus this was a great decision. As long as there are no issues turning the bottle upside down where you want to drink it is fantastic. The only way to get around that would be with a straw or something. Its insulation works moderately well and it is by far the best squeeze bottle I have ever used.

MADE IN CHINA - And tastes like it lol, March 4, 2011
By Martin P. (Houston, TX)
|
|
The country of manufacture has nothing to do with my 1 Star Review. However this "innovative" American company has decided that y'all (and me apparently) are dumb enough to keep buying this Chinese crap. I don't see it mentioned anywhere on Amazon - SO I THOUGHT YOU SHOULD KNOW. Let's hope (pray) the Chinese spend all that American money wisely shall we.
I paid US$13 to "own" this for a little while. Used a dozen times but the taste is so bad, it's got to go. I called China and they said they don't want it back, thanks anyway. Fortunately - even in Texas! - there are recycling programs (ie. jobs for Americans - yay!). Forget about the taste for a moment - I am wondering how much this product would retail for if it was MADE IN THE USA? Does anyone have any idea? Let's say it cost $20 - ***BUT*** they could put a big sticker on it promoting how they are supporting the US Economy and keeping jobs here - do you think people would pay an extra few bucks for that? Maybe 10 years ago they wouldn't (ie. didn't care) but times are changing and people are waking up. I actually think people would support a company like that!
Enough of the rant. Here is the reason it get's 1 Star. I use tap water via my Brita pitcher chilling in the refrigerator. It tastes pretty awesome and delicious actually - but the minute a drop of it goes anywhere near this Podium thing it tastes and smells of plastic. Drinking water from this becomes very unpleasant. Commercial bottled water from a plastic bottle tastes like water, yet water from this bottle tastes of plastic. A possible clue is that I have noticed it more on warm days. Could North American Summer heat be doing something to the plastic? VERY LIKELY, I hear you all say. Yet this Podium thing is designed to be specifically used on a bicycle water cage (outdoors presumably). Surely they (or the Chinese) took that into consideration?
One positive though, is that the mouthpiece did an excellent job of shooting plastic flavored water down my throat while on a ride.

AWESOMENESS, August 2, 2011
By B. Nance (Probably in California)

I LOVE this bottle. I've had several of the old school type of water bottles where you have to get use your teeth to open the valve while your riding, and I always hated doing that. I'm always afraid of breaking my teeth. This bottle however, you don't have to open it all the time! There is a locking mechanism on the top of the bottle on the valve that you can use to keep water from being squeezed out if you were to put the bottle in your book bag or something, but on a ride there is no need to do this. The jet valve simple keep itself closed automatically, and when you want a drink you can either suck the water out of the bottle, or, here's the kicker, if you've been on dirt trails and the valve is dusty and gross, you don't even have to put your mouth on it at all. You just grab the bottle, point it at your mouth, and squeeze. Voila! You're hydrated. As other have said, this bottle is on the small side for long rides, but that's easy to fix. Just buy the bigger version that is the same thing but more volume. Problem solved. As for the insulation complaints. I say "eh, whatever." I mean, it's water. Cold water is indeed nice on hot days, but honestly, it's gonna do the job either way. What's important is that you've got water and a convenient method of getting it into you. That's my take anyways. I don't really think it's all that expensive either. I mean, it's more than the cheap little "local bike shop branding goes here" bottles that they give away with new bikes, but it's also a million times better. I recommend giving it or the larger one a shot.

A nice addition for your long runs, August 1, 2011
By Sam Pettway
|
|
I have two or three of the basic CamelBak bottles and have found the valve to be the best out there. When ordering the insulated bottle, I was afraid the insulation would add weight, but that's not an issue at all. Instead, it performs as promised and adds an hour+ of chill time to your favorite sports drink. Very pleased!

Taste matters, July 28, 2011
By prf
|

I am impressed with the features, but unfortunately plain water has a faint but noticeable plastic taste. I have read many review of the Podium Chill Jacket and similar products. The taste problem is mentioned by a few reviewers, not many. I can't explain that, except perhaps that the most enthusiastic people may be using it for an energy drink rather than water. Taste matters and despite the product's excellent features, I can't recommend it.

Great Bottle for Short Rides, July 13, 2011
By Inane
|
|
I have 2 of the Chill bottles and 2 Ice bottles the chill bottles work great for me on short road rides (less than 20 miles). They keep the water cool for about an hour if I put water from the fridge in it with some ice they can hold out longer. I would not say that they keep the water cold, but I am yet to have the water get hot or warmer than room temp even on the hotest days.
The one thing that keeps me useing the bottles is the valve on the top it works great. You get a lot of water out and it will seal back up on its own. I never lock the top and I am yet to have any leak out on its own so the seal is good.

I love CamelBak Podium Chill bottles!, July 4, 2011
By Teri Curry

|
I've used the Polar insulated bottles in the past but I only use the CamelBak Podium Chill bottle now. They are very easy to drink from and do a fantastic job keeping your drink chilled. Cycling in the hot Florida summer these bottles are a must if you don't want to drink warm or worse fluids on your ride. I much prefer the CamelBak Podium tops to the Polar tops. No more pulling open the valve with my teeth and NO SPILLING with the valve open and the bottle full. I recommend these bottles to anyone who wants to keep their drink cold.

Terrific insulated bottle, May 27, 2011
By nwilkey

This is a great bottle. I love that it is insulated and find it keeps my water cold for an extended time. I also purchased a Topeak adjustable water bottle cage and it fits quite nicely.
My only recommendation for improvement is to consider a design that is dishwasher safe. However, most bottles cant withstand the heat of a dishwasher and washing this thing by hand is a snap. A little pricier than some bottles, but the insulation factor is well worth the extra.

Like it a lot, November 11, 2010
By Kooosh (Portland, OR USA)
|
|
I don't have a lot to compare this to, if I'm being honest. It definitely keeps your drink cool longer than your average $4 plastic bottle.
It's easy to see why some people complain about how the valve might accumulate dirt. They should probably provide a cap of some sort if this is being marketed as a bicycle bottle. This is especially true if you're a mountain bike rider. However, I've used it many times in many conditions on the road and can't report the same problem.
Three things make this bottle desirable: the Jet Valve (fantastic,) the TruTaste non-BPA plastic (HUGE) and the insulation (debatable.)
I use this bottle both on my bike and around the house (constantly) for drinking filtered water out of the faucet. I really have no complaints, but it isn't exactly cheap. Great product.

Keeps it cold!!!, October 22, 2010
By Scott in Tucson (Tucson, AZ)

It's pretty amazing how long these bottle will keeps your drink cold. Living in Arizona, our cars get very hot, probably 150 degrees plus and these bottles will keep your drink reasonably cold for at least a few hours even in those conditions. After buying one locally, we bought 3 more. The only weird thing is it makes a squealing sound if it's been sitting around...probably a small release of pressure. One squeeze and that will stop, but highly recommended otherwise.

insulation isn't that functional, September 27, 2010
By scootle (SF Bay Area, CA)
|
|
Even though this is advertised as an "insulated" bottle, I'm not convinced the insulation really helps keep things cold for much longer than a normal bottle. When I fill it up with (nearly) ice cold water from my fridge dispenser the bottle itself feels icy cold on the outside, which is a sign the insulation isn't really doing its job very well... notice a real thermos bottle full of boiling hot liquid is not HOT to the touch on the outside (or cold, if you fill it with ice water)... that's how insulation is supposed to work.
Approximately 30 minutes into a ride in 70-80 deg weather, the water inside my bottle is pretty much at ambient temperature, so this isn't really very impressive from an insulation standpoint. I added ice cubes one time to see if that would help... they melted pretty dang fast. :( It might help a bit to pre-chill the bottle in the refrigerator or maybe even freezer to help extend the time a tiny bit.
However, the jet valve is just great... lots of volume coming out in a quick spurt, which is perfect for a gulp or two without having to squeeze the bottle multiple times. The only downside is if you forget to lock the jet valve, toss the bottle in a bag, and squeeze the bottle accidentally, you might get a bit of mess. ;)
Still, the jet valve is handy enough that I invested in two bottles for the long term.

Cooler Rides, August 27, 2010
By Murph (Covington, Louisiana USA)

THis bottle performs as advertised. On a bikeride, it lasts for 2 or more hours in the LA heat after freezing, much longer than an un-insulated bottle. The valve seals perfectly and the whole thing goes into the dishwasher (top shelf) without problems. It is better than the polar bottles because of the valve that is always ready, but never leaks, requiring no opening motion when you want to drink. Highly recommended.

A toss up between a camelbak 21-ounce, insulated (too small ...some claim) or Polar 24 ounce, insulated (but sprout is not as good). Well, I end up buying both of them and switch the caps on them. Now you have a larger bottle, chills better, desirable sprout. Putting ice in it is ideal for longer chill factor. freezing it ...even better! I used it everyday! Until I losted both of them after long period of use. Now ...shopping for another set.

my favorite sport bottle, August 22, 2010

I love CamelBak products and this is no exception. The traditional sport bottles often close when I try to drink out of them so I end up not getting very much water when I need it most. The CamelBak sports bottle delivers a lot of water fast. I even find it easier to squeeze than other sports bottles. I highly recommend the CamelBak Sports Bottle

Well, its a water bottle that keeps water cold (longer than non-insulated bottles). Could just stop here but I think the nice part of this bottle is the nossle which allows you to shoot water into your face when applying pressure to the bottle's body and keeps water in bottle when not squeezing (even if pointing nossle down. I like that. Just makes sense. Anyhow, Good water bottles.

My husband I recently bought bikes and have been taking them out every weekend so we needed simple water bottles and having used CamelBak products in the past, we chose these. I have two of these bottles and prefer them over the polar ice brand so much so that I gave away the polar ones to some new riders in our group who did not have water bottles. I really like the spout and the squeezeablitly of the bottles. I have found no problem with dirt collecting on the spout as some have but I use it on my road bike and it has never been an issue.

Water bottle supreme, August 4, 2010

This product is awesome. I used it for the past couple weeks in 90+ temperatures with high humidity, it kept my water cold to luke cool after nearly two hours at a time. I start off usually by freezing about a quarter to a third of the bottle and then just fill the rest with cold water before my bike ride. That does the trick pretty well and this bottle works way better at dispensing and retaining cold water then any other bottle I've used.

Great bottle just wish it was a little bigger, July 13, 2010

I bought this bottle for my son so his drink would stay cool during all his sporting events. It does keep the water/gatorade colder than just a regular bottle and I love the locking valve top so that it doesn't accidentally spill in his bag. The only thing I wish is that it came in a larger size, like 32 ounces, because he usually is wanting more by the end of practice or a game. So I guess I need to buy another and send him with 2!

Better than non-insulated, July 13, 2010

Okay, here was my super-scientific test method: I put about four ice cubes in the Podium Chill and filled the rest with water. I filled my regular Podium to the top with ice cubes and the rest with water. I drove 30 minutes across town to the trail in a non-air conditioned car. I was on the trail for about an hour to 90 minutes, using the standard Podium the whole time. By the time I finished, the remaining water was well on the way to warm/hot. The Podium Chill, while no longer containing any cubes, was still cool on its way to room temperature for the drive home.
I like the Chill for its taller size, I don't have to reach down as far on the bike to pick it up. I noticed no funny taste, even when using it immediately after purchase without rinsing. I chose the Chill over the Polar because I am addicted to Camelbak's spill-proof spout technology that means no fiddling to open the cap while riding (although this proved to be inconvenient when I sweat sunscreen into my eye and couldn't just dribble some water into it to clean it out). Maybe when I win the lottery I'll buy the Polar too and see if I can't interchange lids.
It serves its purpose best on shorter rides. The first time I used too many ice cubes that didn't melt, so I was left with no actual water to drink. However, if you're planning an all-day adventure and want ice cold water the whole time, this definitely isn't for you.

Waterbottle for all outdoor adventures, July 6, 2010

If you want your water bottle to have a few extra features here and there that add some pleasure throughout your ride or exercise then this is the water bottle for you. This bottle never leaks, it has never cracked, and it does actually keep the liquid cooler for longer. It won't keep the water cold for hours on end, but for an extra few hours your water will be cooler. One of the major upsides of this bottle is that it has camelbak's no-leak nozzle and a lock to stop the flow.
Bottom line: Realistically, a water bottle is a water bottle, and if you want to pay a few extra dollars for a water bottle that never leaks and keeps your water a little colder a little longer, this water bottle is for you.

Nice insulating bottle with a great nozzle to boot., June 7, 2010

Keeps my drink cool for a good 4-5hrs, nothing astounding. However what I like best is the nozzle. Twist open with self seal allows easy function without having to hurt your teeth biting on traditional valves. You can leave it open without having to worry about spillage, although hard bumps will probably still leak some out. The nozzle itself is soft so you can hold onto it with your teeth to free your hands for other stuff (grab food?).

-Keeps stuff cool
-Easy to clean
-Great Camelbak nipple makes for easy drinking

Worst thing about this was for some reason, Amazon would only let me order one at a time.

Better than others, but not awesome, March 9, 2010

I purchased two of these water bottles for biking. They have good spouts on them that are easy to use and leak-proof. The bottles are a good size, but are a tight fit in a bottle cage. The liquid is cooler than that kept in my other bottles, but still does not stay cold and requires ice on a warm day.

Keeps the water cool and does not leak. Also easier to squeeze than the non Podium bottles from Camelbak!

PROs: It's so easy to squeeze. Important to me because I don't have large hands AND I don't feel the need to fight the water bottle while riding on my bike on the open road...which I do three or four times per week. And it's bpa-free!
CONs: It does NOT (as other reviews have stated) keep the fluids as cold as the Polar Insulated bottles. I own both and more.
IDEAL for: People with smaller hands (you know who you are...kids, ladies, mostly). People who exercise in climate controlled facilities or in the land of endless summer like parts of California (as an example). People who like to control the volume of fluids per squeeze they are getting...hence avoiding unfortunate choking situation or constant frustration over NOT enough per squeeze or a BATH each squeeze.
NOT-so-IDEAL for: People who LOVE ice cold beverages while exercising. People who ride their bikes in Arizona (as an example) OUTSIDE and during the SUMMER (speaking from experience).
I have used this bottle for recovery drinks as well and it cleans up very well (no sticky left behind).

Nice bottle. But insulated really?.., April 10, 2010
By DiscoverYellow (Washington, D.C.)

I use it on my bike rides. It is a nice bottle, but it does not seem to insulate. Water gets from tap cold to room warm in less than half an hour. I did not load it full of ice however. (Did you know ice cold water is not healthy for sports?) I like the plastic feel and grip to the plastic.
The valve is interesting, though collects dust inside it during ride, and you know where all that road dust goes... Squirting leak-proof works as advertized, no need to shut the valve (although you can), it will not yield any water unless you properly squeeze the bottle. You won't lose a drop of water. Now, this can be a problem, when the bottle is less than half full, squeezing becomes a skill (air is more compressible then water, you can figure physics behind it). Sipping is next to impossible while on bike: just suck up all that came out.
And last bit: the last bit of water is hard to get out, unless you unscrew the cap.

Water Bottle, February 18, 2010

We've tested many water bottles to carry around for every day use as well as the gym or tennis court. The Camelbak has proven to be our favorite. We've since purchased several to have one clean and ready at all times. We are also thrilled that the CamelBak has allowed us to completely eliminate the throw-away-plastic water bottles from our lives.

The CamelBak Podium Chill Bottle keeps iced water cool much longer than single walled bottles (even on 100 degree days). Perfect for bicycling.

Unless you are in the sun for hours this bottle will do the trick. We take it on walks and to the zoo, and it always stays cold enough. However, if you looking for a bottle to stay cool at the beach in the sun after a couple hours look elsewhere.
