5.0 out of 5 stars.  Best bicycle visibility aid I've seen yet., June 10, 2009
By Siv-Art Productions (Hollywood, CA)
Wow, can't believe how many people don't read the simple instructions.

I got these last summer for my new bike, since I'm riding through parts of Los Angeles that have very poor lighting in the middle of the night (Cahuenga Pass, if you're familiar), and I LOVE these SpokeLits! I had to order them from another website and they seemed much more expensive (around $15-$20 apiece), but I'm thrilled that Amazon in selling them now!

I put a green and red light on opposite ends or my wheels, and they look great when I'm riding through the streets. I feel much more visible, and I can see the lights reflecting off of the ground and windows I pass.

I agree the Blue doesn't seem like it'd be as visible, but for $5 and free shipping, I'm going to order one to try it out.

IMPORTANT! The biggest downside to these is the batteries, which don't last all that long and sell for almost $4 most places (and the SpokeLit uses 2 at a time). But I just found a seller on Amazon that sells a pack of 25 for $8, with free shipping. Just search for "CR2016". I haven't gotten mine yet, but there is a lot of positive feedback on the product page, so I'm hoping its as good a deal as it sounds.

Enjoy! And thanks for selling them, Amazon!

UPDATE (December 16, 2010):
First, the current link to the batteries I mention is here:
[...]

I ordered the batteries over a year ago, and still haven't used up my supply, and I have 4 SpokeLits on my biks (2 on each wheel), plus two more for my boyfriend's bike (though he doesn't ride as much as I do).

As far as the Spokelits themselves go, I am back to buy more. Unfortunately, my front wheel was stolen with two of my lights on it. But I couldn't love these more. They are bright, and they look SO cool riding down the street. I have one of every color on my bike (2 front-2 back) and I get compliments all the time about how cool they look. And I've never yet had a problem with visibility. I always feel like car drivers can see me, especially coming from the side.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great visibility when you figure out how to turn it on, January 17, 2009
By Ronovan (Coupeville, WA)
I got two lights as gifts, took them out of the package, checked to see how to install them and didn't pay attention to "activation". The lights as shipped only light for 30 seconds so the batteries don't fail while in transit or on the rack.

Push and hold the on button for 10-12 seconds. The light will flash rapidly. Now when you turn it on it will stay on until you turn it off.

They make my bike really visible in night riding. I highly recommend these lights. Bright and easy to install.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  One of the best inventions for night riding, May 4, 2009
By Bionicle chronicler (Langhorne, PA USA)
The spokelit is a very useful safety measure if you ever take your bike out at night. Since they are relatively inexpensive I purchased two green ones for both wheels. These lights make it virtually impossible for you to go unnoticed when your bike is viewed from the sides. I believe that the solid light mode is more visible when going at higher speeds but if you're going slower then I would recommend switching to the strobe light function. I know that a lot of people have complained that they don't make you visible from the front and back but that is where your front and rear bike lights should come in. The spokelit was not created to replace bike lights at all but rather compliment them.

Not only are they a great safety device but they also look completely out of this world when people see them. I've gotten several compliments and questions on how neat they look and as to where I got them.

Overall, this product is a must have for anybody who wants to bike at night and be safe.

PLEASE NOTE: Do not be like many other people who bought the spokelit and then sent it back because it turned off after a few seconds. This product comes in a "try me" mode and has to be taken off that mode if you want it to work normally. To take it off this "try me" mode, hold down the light button until it starts to flash then it will work fine.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Bike Bling, December 8, 2008
By wackochango (chicago)
Bought the blue one and it looks cool, but I have doubts about it's effectiveness on my nightime rides in Chicago traffic. If you press and hold the only button, it stays on continuously or flashes. Perhaps the negative reviewer had a defect. IMO cars will not see the blue from behind, only if they're about to T-bone you from the side. Even in reflections of store windows I barely see the blue, and since only one comes per box, I wish I had them on both wheels. I put caulk on it to secure against thieves. Won't be buying another. Not bright enough (in blue).

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Yet another failed bike lighting attempt by a cheap product., September 8, 2009
By )'( (SF Bay Area, CA)
Once you figure out how to turn the auto turn off feature, you'll get excited because the colors are awesome and its exactly what you think you were looking for.

After three nights, the batteries burned out - fabulous.

I used these lights for Burning Man and by the third night (and no, I did NOT leave them on all night) they were burned out and useless.

If you don't mind going thru batteries like water - these lights are perfect for you.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Burned out quickly, January 25, 2010
By Chris.
I got six of these lights for xmas and was super excited to have added visibility on my commuter bike. After disabling the "Try Me" mode I set 2 lights per wheel. After a 30 minute ride only one light was lit. I checked to make sure I did indeed disable the "Try Me" mode, which I did, but I gave them another shot. After riding 15 minutes I checked my wheels and noticed one was already out. When I got home 3 where out and only one was lit. I put the other two on, making that 3 per wheel, and after 30 minutes only 2 were lit and after 40 minutes only one was lit! What a piece of junk. The batteries are supposed to have +25 hrs of life on them!

Don't buy. Spend the extra cash you'll waste on batteries and get some hokey spoke lights.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Tough water proof light for your bike spokes, December 7, 2008
By Chris (Los Angeles, Ca)
The other reviewers are a little slow. The reason the light only stays on for 20 seconds, is because you didn't activate it. You have to hold down the button for 10 seconds until you see a rapid blinking light. That means it is now activated and will stay on until you turn it off. It says right on the package to activate the light, the first time you use it. The 20 second mode is for store display only, to conserve the battery.

The light is encased in a tough plastic and is water proof. It slides on to your bike tire easily and doesn't budge. The plastic is similar to a dog ball. My only concern is that the lights would be easy to take by anyone interested.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  FYI - Blue colored LEDs / Lights are ILLEGAL in CA..., July 12, 2011
By ericsf (San Francisco, California)
Unfortunately, under California law only law enforcement vehicles; including bicycles, are allowed to display steady or flashing BLUE lights. The other colors are okay. Check your own state DMV laws for color restrictions.

This is from the California DMV website. Note Section B...

V C Section 21201.3 Bicycle Lights
Bicycle Lights

21201.3. (a) A bicycle or motorized bicycle used by a peace officer, as defined in Section 830.1 of, subdivision (a), (b), (c), (d), (e), (f), (g), or (i) of Section 830.2 of, subdivision (b) or (d) of Section 830.31 of, subdivision (a) or (b) of Section 830.32 of, Section 830.33 of, subdivision (a) of Section 830.36 of, subdivision (a) of Section 830.4 of, or Section 830.6 of, the Penal Code, in the performance of the peace officer's duties, may display a steady or flashing blue warning light that is visible from the front, sides, or rear of the bicycle or motorized bicycle.

(b) No person shall display a steady or flashing blue warning light on a bicycle or motorized bicycle except as authorized under subdivision (a).
Added Sec. 65, Ch. 877, Stats. 1998. Effective January 1, 1999.

Hope this helps others in California...

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Well Worth getting them for all your Bikes, August 14, 2008
By Duncan Cunningham (Kaysville, Utah USA)
I bought these and wasn't sure that they would be as good as described. they are fantastic! They really light up the street around the bike (with just one on the front wheel).

I'm planning on buying more for all the kids bikes and mine too.. the green really draws attention too, red looks like just another light.. but green (and i think they do a blue one) is much wiser to purchase.

The fact that it a rotating light, helps to truly be seen and helps to be safe, and cool too.

I'll race you to buy them all up.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great for visibility - recommended!, December 24, 2010
By moun10s2c
I've been a bike commuter for three years. I've owned these lights for two months. I have two green ones on each wheel, and I run them in flash mode. Not only does the flash mode conserve batteries, but it also makes me more visible when I'm stopped at traffic lights or stop signs.

My commute is approximately 30 minutes, and I've used these lights 3-4 days per week for about two months. The original batteries are still going strong.

A few weeks ago I had a driver pull beside me at a stop light and tell me he had noticed me when I was about 1/4 mile in front of him. He said the rotation of the lights on the wheels made it very clear that he was approaching a bicycle. Ride on! Strongly recommended.

UPDATE: I've now had these lights for four months. They've been through rain, mud, road salt & sand and everything else the road can throw at them. The original batteries are still working. I'm so pleased that I bought some for my daughter's bike.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Very helpful for side visibility, October 31, 2009
By TW (Duluth, MN)
I bought four of these (red) for my bike - 2 on each wheel. 4 per bike I feel is the magic number, they're pretty dang bright and noticeable. These should not be used as a substitute for a proper rear blinky light and front headlamp, but as an addition to those for side visibility. First time I rode with these at night, cars gave me noticeably more room when they passed. I'm sure most of them were just thinking "what the $@%* is that?!" It definitely gets that kind of reaction. I haven't had any problems with them running in the rain, either.

I should also say that I feel completely comfortable leaving these attached when I park my bike somewhere where I'll take my other lights off. They are low profile and look just a lot like basic white wheel reflectors in terms of shape, size, color.

Switching these off safe mode when I first got them was very easy. Not sure what people are complaining about because it's very straightforward and they work just fine. Four stars because I'm still waiting to see how battery life and overall durability will be.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Fantastic for night time visibility, October 24, 2009
By J. Hetzer
I bought these so that I can still go riding during the summer without dying under the desert sun. I have three green ones in front and two red ones in back. Having three on one wheel can give you that circle of light effect while cycling around 15mph, and it feels a little more balanced to me.

Some people have mentioned that it is a bit of a strobe effect when on a REALLY dark path/road, which is a little true if you are staring down, but otherwise it doesn't bother me.

I feel VERY visible with these on my bike, but it certainly not a replacement for a flashing front and tail light. I believe that it helps drivers at intersections be better able to gauge your speed as you approach.

I've had these a few months now and the batteries are starting to dim to the point where I feel they need to be replaced. It has probably been around 20 hours of 'Steady On' to get to this point. There are two small holes on the lights for packaging, but I used these holes with small zip ties to wrap around the spoke to deter people from grabbing them off my bike, or from bouncing off when my bike is on my car's rack (although that second part seems unlikely, they feel pretty secure).

I would've given it a full five stars if the product was a little lighter and maybe a little longer battery life.

(Most negative reviews seem to have ignored the GIANT YELLOW TAG on the product that tells you to hold the button down for 30 seconds to get out of demo mode)

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Infraction!, December 4, 2008
By Windchild (Campo, CA)
Great idea, but what were these dipsticks thinking? It's an infraction under the California Vehicle Code section 21201.3(b) to have a flashing or steady blue light on a bicycle. Why aren't they selling a yellow light?

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent safety device for bicyclists, January 25, 2009
By K. Resburg (Hillsboro, OR United States)
Bought four of these as a Christmas gift for my brother (he commutes to & from work by bike). Another reviewer had suggested two per wheel for balance. Yet another reviewer on another website reported the directions for keeping the lights on were not clear. That's true, and thank you to that reviewer for explaining the lights were not broken, they just require pushing the on button longer or a second time (I don't remember which), but to be patient with getting them to work (the reason for 4 stars instead of 5).
My brother reports that the lights are VERY bright and work very well.
While I was waiting at a dark bus stop, I noticed that the cyclists who passed by me were very well-lit in front and back, but when they cycled through the T-intersection in the dark, they were almost invisible to the traffic from the side. So this sister got her brother MORE lights for Christmas!!
I highly recommend them!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Night Rider, November 9, 2010
By Dewey L. Barksdale
One words says it all, "AWESOME! I purchase the Nite Ize spokelit and it is one of the top rated ways of protection in helping drivers to see you at night. I thus far have them in green, red, and blue. I brought the blue pair as a gift to a riding buddy so he too would be able too be seen at night when riding with me as well. Their made very well and do fit totally securely on to any bike wheel spoke. Their brighter then any other version on the market. This SpokeLit operates in two modes: flash mode and solid state model(meaning non flashing). They come in red, blue, green, disco, and one more color but unsure what that color may be. I wish that NiteIze would make it in a bright white but that is a color not offered. If you find them in your local Toys R Us, Walmart, or bike store please test the light by using your thumb, and index finger and press. Feel for the click/pop and if it does come on and not differ-cult when you press it is functioning correctly. The SpokeLit operates on two CR 2016 3V batteries. The batteries can be found at any Radio Shack, electronic store, or may be any local super markets that may carry them. Drivers, walkers, police officers, and especially other bikers ask me where to find these safety lights. No matter who I talk to as well as educating other bike riders along the my route they all claim to have never seen any thing like them on the market, and that their very bright at night. I'm personally stating too any one who reads this to please buy them for your self or even your kids. I will promise you it will be just one of the true best safety items you could ever invest in for biking. One last thing they make a great X-mas gift, and stocking stuffer for a biker as well. I can't say any thing more I'm done!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Nite Ize Blue Safety Light, December 8, 2009
By Sergio Valladares (California)
Because I am a bike commuter who returns home at nighttime, I am serious about the use of lights and reflectors when riding at night. These lights are great and highly visible to any car that sees my bike from the sides. I bought two of them and have installed them in the front wheel spokes, and because the batteries for them could be considered expensive, I turn them on only in an area with a lot of traffic and few street lights. When riding through illuminated streets, I rely on my front and rear lights and my reflective vest. Either way, I recommend these lights, especially when traveling in area with poor road visibility, with a need to be seen.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  definitely worth the money, September 1, 2009
By Petrina Despeaux (New York, NY United States)
I bought these around 2 months ago, and they are really terrific. I live in NYC, where, in my opinion, being visible is one of the most important safety precautions one can take. These were easy to install (unlike others, mine worked perfectly after following the instructions), easy to operate, and are very low-profile when not operating, so I am not worried about them being stolen from my bike when unattended. I even find cars giving me a wider path when I use them. What made me decide to buy them in the first place was that I saw some otherwise reckless youngsters using the same lights, and they were quite visible from long distances. I highly recommend these.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Haters are uninfomed, March 4, 2011
By Nathan Schenck Jones
I have not purchased this product yet, but in reading reviews there are folks that are using CR2032 that are having battery life trouble. Seriously. The circuit wants more than 3.6 volts and that is why they use the two CR2016 for 3.6+3.6=7.2 volts. Clearly a circuit design that wants 7.2 volts is going to eat 3.6 volt batteries.

If the LED works until say 2 volts or something like that it will take a lot longer for 7.2 volts to be drained to 2 volts that it will the 3.6 volt CR2032.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Good idea, doesn't work, November 25, 2008
By Chick lit fan (Tucson, AZ)
The other reviews on this page must have been written by the seller. The light looks like a great idea, works for about 20 seconds, then turns itself off. I thought that it might be the vibrations of the bike triggering the switch, so I tried just holding it in my hand, and it turns off in 20 seconds! On the wheel it looks good for the 20 seconds when it's on, and then it turns off! What a waste. It was such a good idea that does not work. If you wanted to keep it on all the time you'd have to keep stopping, turning it on again and then going. What a waste.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  They work...But, May 11, 2011
By H. K. Moon (Saint Paul, Minnesota USA)
I typically commute to work in the morning before sunrise and tried these. They lasted about two weeks before the batteries died. I looked for replacement batteries and found that a new battery was more expensive than the unit itself. It seems too expensive to keep replacing batteries so I have opted to put reflective stickers on the sides of my bike rims.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Awesome til bike got stolen, April 5, 2011
By Benjamin Guzman (Orlando, FL USA)
These were great, lit me up for great visibility at night. One stopped working but it's not due to battery dying, it was due to the battery connection not being tight enough. I cut out a little piece of cardboard and stuck it in there to increase pressure on the connection, worked like a charm.

I think people watched me put this bike in my van last night because I like to ride around at night in a downtown area. The next morning my window was smashed and my very moderately priced bike (~170) was stolen. I really think that having the lights on made thieves think the bike was "way sicker" than it really was. SO, lesson is, these are kinda showy, but thieves see them too. Keep your bike inside your home.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Yet another flawed masterpiece !, October 22, 2010
By Science Boy
This is a fun little item but as other reviewers have mentioned, it positively eats the CR2016 cells. This seems like a rather silly choice of power source on the part of the designers. A CR2032 is more widely available and has a lot more juice. Personally I prefer all things rechargeable so I find I'm not even switching my SpokeLits on that much anymore. The green is a good safety color and the multicolor is very cool (although the color sequence is always the same). The flash mode does help to extend the burn time but, of course, lowers the 'safety' factor. Even if you don't use the thing, the batteries still go flat after a while because it's not really off at all - it's in standby and waiting for the signal to turn ON. In this respect a good old-fashioned switch would really be much better. Bottom line: you will have to buy a lot of lithium coin cells if you want to keep using this after the first week or two. Make sure you recycle all those batteries and don't just throw them in the trash/landfill/groundwater/tap water!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  SpokeLit Christmas decoration/safety light, December 26, 2009
By Guy (Chicagoland, IL USA)
I use both the red and green lights to decorate my bike for Christmas night rides with my bike clubs. They worked as advertised... but be sure to read and understand the directions on how to get the unit out of demonstration mode. The light is bright and makes my bike very easily seen from the side. After Christmas, I'll take the green lights off and keep the red ones for safety visibility. The one feature that I would like changed in the design is to make the wings longer to fit some bikes with lower spoke counts. Other than that special adjustment, I really like this light.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Spoke Lights, November 3, 2009
By time on my hands (retired)
Got these lights for the kids' bikes, who ride a lot in urban areas where its important to be seen. Most other lights are front and back, so these are great because they cover the sides. The kids like the rainbow colors, and they are surprising visible for such a small light. Definitely a big step up from spoke reflectors, which don't do very much, IMHO.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great little safety gadget, September 28, 2009
By AcornMan (Denver, CO)
With the days getting shorter and shorter, I find myself riding my bicycle in darkness more often, which is always a bit unnerving because I fear that I am not visible enough to motorists. Even a bicycle with a bright headlight and a good blinking taillight can still be difficult to see. This is the first device I've come across that provides SIDE visibility for bicycles. They're cheap enough that there's really no excuse for not having one (actually one on each wheel is even better). I feel much safer having these on my bicycle. They don't add any appreciable weight, they're easy to use, and they work great. I highly recommend them to anyone who rides in the dark.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Pretty goood light, August 28, 2009

I bought two of these since the daylight is fading fast during my afternoon rides. I have a road bike with 27 inch wheels, they wouldn't fit on the front spokes but work fine on the back spokes. The color changes lite really makes you visible and cars slow down just to get a look at them! I have been happy with them so far, I did a ride in almost pitch black and these thing really shine!

3.0 out of 5 stars.  "Try Me" mode tricky to turn off, hard to fit to 16" wheels, but works well once set up, August 16, 2009
By HMSII (Chicago)
As other reviewers have noted, you have to hold the button on the light through a complete cycle to turn off the "Try Me" feature (the light has a little tag with instructions). I discovered, though, that I was rocking my finger on the button instead of holding it down, so I failed to cycle through the way the instructions suggested. I think it took me 3-4 tries to set the light so it would not shut off after 30 seconds. Now that I've done that, though, it works great. Note that if you have small wheels (any kids' bikes, some folding bikes), these lights are hard to work into the spokes. It can be done (I put a spoke light on both of my 16" wheels) but there's not a lot of space to work with and it might not be worth the frustration on top of the problem with getting the lights to stay lit.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great product for night visability!, April 20, 2009
By J. Pettersen (Los Angeles, CA. USA)
I love this product! I bought 2 of them, one for each wheel. The bad reviews are from people who can't seem to follow directions. There is a notice on the product that you have to hold down the button until the light blinks the 1st time you use it. You even have to remove the tag that tells you this with a pair of scissors and still these people won't read it. Anyway... great product that has really improved my visibility for when I commute home on my bike in the evening. Be aware that here in CA and some other states that you can't have a red or blue light so I bought the green one to keep out of trouble with local law enforcement. You may want to research this a little before you buy. It was mentioned to me and when I looked into it, it turned out to be true. This is the only affordable product I have found that gives you good side visibility when riding your bike. I have a headlight, a blinky taillight from Planet Bike that is wonderful for rear visibility and now one of these on each wheel. I am much more visible to the other traffic and I am not as afraid that I will get hit on the way home. Just a great product that I can't endorse enough if you have to ride in evening or night conditions like me. Happy cycling!

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Doesnt even turn on, August 13, 2010
By Tiff
My spokes never even turned on. I was super excited when I ordered them too. I bought a red and a green one. I'm wondering if it is just a battery defect or what. BOTH of my lights don't turn on. Horrible lights. Any other recommendations on where to buy spokes lights anyone?

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Fun, effective lights, August 9, 2011
By lostatlimbo (Portland, OR)
I got the Disco for my girlfriend and the Ambers for myself. They are fairly easy to install and use and add great visibility at night.

When I first bought these on Amazon, there was a photo that suggested the Disco lights as a rapid changing color, but in reality they color changes very slowly. In strobe mode, the color is red-only. This is not a deal-breaker, but not what I was expecting and therefore loses a star.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Weak batteries in one shipped light, July 11, 2011
By SmarterThanYouThink (Indianapolis, IN United States)
The effect needs two of these items per wheel and a pretty decent speed. We did a night ride with a large group and having a single light on a wheel never did give the complete circle of light appearance since we couldn't go above about 12mph.

I ordered two and they arrived very quickly, but one of them was quite dim. I had to spend more for new batteries for it at Walmart than the light itself cost me in the first place. The new batteries worked great--beware of aged lights that must have been in a warehouse for some time.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Highly practical and cost effective., April 14, 2011
By Contigo
For months I've been thinking about the fact that I have a super bright (almost blinding) headlamp, a tail light that can be seen up to a mile away, and literally nothing that allows me to be seen from the sides at night. I did some research and found a lot of expensive, unreviewed wheel light systems. I didn't want to spend a lot on an unproven product. I was a little skeptical of the Nite Ize Spokelits...I mean, really $5-7? So I ordered one, why not. It showed up with mostly dead batteries, but it appears that Amazon shipped it in a too tight container that turned it off of "try me" mode, so who knows how long it had been activated. I replaced the two CR 2016 batteries and it lit right up. Installation took, literally, seconds and I was very impressed with the added visibility. It can be a little distracting at first on your front wheel, but you get used to it and I think it's really cool! I'm not sure on battery life, but for $5 and free shipping, I got a pack of 10 Sony CR2016's on Ebay.

Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase. They may be a little tacky, but I think it's a small price to pay for the added safety and I'm proud of my bike bling. They've performed exactly as expected and I ordered two more to share with a friend :)

Get them, have fun, and be safe!

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Burn out quickly, not very bright, December 28, 2010
By QuakerProf
I bought these through LL Bean, hoping to improve my side visibility on my bike. Unfortunately, both of them burned out quickly running on standard batteries, and even when they are on, they glow more than they project light. They are comparable in brightness to one of those glowsticks you get at the county fair- in other words, not nearly bright enough to attract the attention of motorists.

My suggestion is to use more traditional LED lights on your front fork posts and your rear seat stays (the posts going to the rear hub) and keep them on blinking mode. The effect will be similar, but much brighter.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Green Lights, October 7, 2010
By Pimpdawg
I hate bicycling at night in darken areas and though my Giant Sedona Mountain Bicycle is equipped with both high quality front/rear lights, spotting potholes and other bicycle damaging street depressions can still be difficult at times. Thus i choose 2 buy these green spokelites 2 improve my overall visibity of the grounds below.Plus i like trickin out my bicycle with cool accessories.Needless 2 say these spokelits are a godsent.Though a tad difficult 2 put on,once on they're quite secure.Nevertheless i'd put something extra on it to secure it from possible theft. As far as the batteries r concern replace the 2 cr2016 with 1 cr2032(as the included batteries tends 2 be semi drained of power).Plus it's more cost effective 2 use just 1 battery.Anyways,i'm buying 2 more of these green spokelites and possibly 2 disco lights for the ultimate glow effect.Be safe and smart fellow cyclers!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  These spoke lights are SUPER!, September 30, 2010
By Stephanie E. Lemus
I couldn't be more satisfied with these spoke lights. They provide a safer night ride and they look awesome! I get lots of compliments :) You can either keep them on disco mode(changing colors) or you can put them on blinking red light mode. They are also a good size (I put mine on a cruiser bike), plus they are durable (made of a bouncy, rubbery like plastic NOT breakable, hard plastic). They also stay securely in place and don't fall off the spokes. I originally bought these lights for my 7 year old daughter but I borrow hers when I go on my night bike rides. I'm going to order some for myself! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars.  If you bike after dark, you need these!, August 4, 2010
By professor/rider/trainer (College Station, TX)
I bought the first pair of these over a year ago and put them on my bike because I often ride home in the dark. I bought a second pair about nine months ago because the first ones have been so good. These lights rock! They really make you visible. I've gotten lots of nice comments on them from fellow cyclists and motorists. These lights look cool and make you much more visible to other traffic. Obviously, you will be much more visible from the side, but the lights are bright enough that you will also be much easier to see from the front and rear, too.

My Spokelits have performed well. I have not had problems with the batteries burning out too soon, nor have I had trouble keeping the Spokelits in place. I regularly pass through a construction zone and ride on a rough country road, and the lights have stayed securely in place. My poor bike has also been outside in the rain on many occasions and the water and mud have had no effect on the Spokelits. This is a good product and it is fun, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Spokelits are great, May 1, 2009

I got a set of these in Feb 09, the day after i got 2 i ordered 2 more. Very bright and people always say nice things about them. Easy to turn on and off. Maybe from behind can't see much light that's why i have a planetbike superflash. Thinking about adding a 3rd one to each wheel (green). Do web search for best price.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  poor manual, December 22, 2010
By barginshopper
the instruction/manual is not clear or non-exist. I don't know how to get it on the bile spokes. I presume since it has 2 slots it should fit onto 2 spokes but the space is too narraow to fit 2 spokes. it doesn't look like secure to put it on just one spoke.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Very cool lights, but only good for side visibility., August 23, 2011
By Amy...
Unlike the other reviews, I never had to "activate" my Spokelit lights. I did remove the stickers from the back of each battery, though. They were a bit confusing and hard to put on at first, but eventually I got them on. I got blue and green and they are both of equivalent brightness.

Each Spokelit light requires TWO watch batteries. Can get a bit expensive during replacement.

This is a minor point, but they were hard to "slip" onto the wheel. You had to somewhat bend the hard plastic back, push your spoke against the small slits on the Spokelit, and then "slide" it up the spoke, towards the edge of the wheel. Except they didn't slide well. They are made of a hard silicone, non-slip plastic. But on the other hand, the grippy plastic does make the thing robust, hard to crack, and difficult to fall off in the middle of riding. They are snapped in place by your spokes such that falling out in-ride becomes near impossible.

Push it once, it turns on a constant color. Push and hold it again, it blinks at a constant rate. Push it thrice, it turns off.

They look like a circling dot when you ride. It's only if you REALLY go VERY fast that they look like a circle. For optimal brightness, I suggest buying two Spokelit lights for each wheel. I have one for each wheel right now, and they're fine.

They give great side visibility, but they are no means replacements for your head or tail light. In a pitch black alley, these won't do much for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  works perfect!!, August 22, 2011
By M. Calderon (Spain)
It glows as it is said, however I obtained two, one of them came with the battery full charged and the other one came with low-low-battery, so I had to buy again more batteries. So it will be a 50/50 chance to get a good one or a really no-working one!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Works Great!, August 16, 2011
By Christian
I bought one of these lights, because despite a light on the front and back of my bike I have repeatedly been broadsided by cars. Luckily I haven't been hurt yet, but I decided to do something about it. I saw these and thought I would try it. So far I like my spoke light.

The work best with two on a wheel 180 degrees apart. But one on each wheel looks decent as a long as your moving and definitely makes you more visible than without it!

3.0 out of 5 stars.  not for all bikes, August 6, 2011
By drakegirl
I bought this item for all the family as stocking stuffers. The larger spokes on my kids bikes did not work with this item. There is a slot for 2 spokes (if you look closely at the picture you can sort of tell that) however I am not sure why they have two slots. Because I have a computer/odometer sensor on the front wheel of my bike, I use this on the back wheel only because it started to knock the sensor loose. Otherwise, as additional lighting, this is a great item. Easy to turn on/off and gives great visibility from the side. I recommend if you do any night riding, especially on the roads.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Spokelit good for visibility., July 25, 2011
By Freighter Captian (The Mile High City)
I've been aware for some time that riding at night I was not very visible from the sides. Bought GREEN spoklits, and one night I had to ride miles to get home. I was VERY visible side to side. Note these are not replacements for head and tail lights. Of the colors I've bought GREEN is the brightest, RED is nearly as bright, YELLOW was a disappointment. Yellow came with dead batteries, when I replaced them it was still much dimmer than green and red. All in all I would recommend this in GREEN or RED, and I would buy these again.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  pretty good, July 23, 2011
By Bill B
I have these, and I've seen other people use them on Bike Party nights.

These look beautiful and provide great visibility. Put one on your front wheel, one on the back, and to people behind you it will look like sparks flying. Syncronize them (so they're both in the same position at the same time) and it will look from the side like a beautiful dance.

I prefer the one that automatically changes color every few seconds.

Downsides:
1. Batteries don't last long.
2. They're short, so if there's a lot of space between your spokes, it could cause problems. (The thing could either fall out or turn sideways and damage your spokes.) If your wheel is at least 32 spokes, though, you should be fine.
3. Only works on regular spokes, not those flat bladed ones.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Change the Batteries - Very Inexpensive through Amazon, July 18, 2011
By Collette
I LOVE these Spokelits. I night ride often and visiblity is what it is all about on dark roads. I received one that was dimmer than the rest. But I also ordered a pack of 25 batteries for approximately $4.00 through Amazon. Once I changed the batteries, it worked perfectly. I always carry a couple extra batteries with me for my spokelits, just in case I one light goes out. It does not make sense to slam a great product because the batteries go dead. I have purchased these Spokelits in different colors for all my family member's bikes and have not been disappointed. I get a lot of compliments while I am out riding at night. They are awesome. They look great and are highly visible to the public and motorists.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good Side Visibility, get new batteries, July 8, 2011
By ChicagoCPA (Chicago)
Based on my experience and other reviews here, it appears that like MANY other items that ship with the battery in place, the batteries that come with it will probably not last you very long as they have been sitting in storage for a year already and are probably cheap batteries to begin with.

It uses 2 batteries and you can buy CR2016 Batteries in bulk, just be sure to read the reviews of people who have used them more than a few times already because many of these are also about to die or have already died before you receive them. I'd rather spend a few bucks more and replace them less often.

Set it to blinking as a blinking LED uses much less battery power than an always on LED.

To get to the batteries, just pry off the smaller globe with a screwdriver or keys (not the side with the indents for the spokes). It does not screw on.

I did like the improved visibility, but after dealing with batteries, I gotta wonder just how much of a difference it makes that someone sees you from the side on city streets. It can only really be seen at intersections and they probably have a red light. If they are close enough to actually hit you, then by the time they do see the light, there is not much anyone can do about it. If they are not close enough to hit you, then you are likely going fast enough at right angles to the car that they could not hit you even if they tried. But I guess all it takes is that one time where it does make a difference, so I purchased new batteries and kept using it.

i was expecting sub par quality but this light is actually brighter and more visible at night than the 35 dollar (planetbike) light set i purchased.

i suggest you purchase 2 of these for each wheel. they are worth every cent.

Bottom line is that this light provides invaluable safety to night time bike riders.

ps: i purchased 2 of the red version.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Not bright enough, May 12, 2011
By Christopher Taylor (Seattle, WA)
I had high hopes for these, but they simply aren't bright enough to be useful. Maybe they would be better if the plastic wasn't that cloudy, frosted color, and if the LEDs had some kind of reflector behind them and lenses to focus the light in various directions, instead of diffusing it in all directions.

After being so disappointed by these, I continued searching for bright, effective wheel lights, and I found something else that I am VERY happy with: Monkey Light Bike Light

4.0 out of 5 stars.  good side-vis option for the price, April 17, 2011
By s
Good Stuff: These fit fairly well on traditional spokes, and actually work on my flat/bladed spokes as well (Aksium road wheels). They produce a decent amount of light (I'm using 1 per wheel), and apparently get attention, and I've had the occasional stare or hoot from passing motorists, etc. These increased my side visibility a lot, and I use them on early-morning and night rides. I get a good amount of light from the blinking mode, so I suggest using that to conserve battery unless you're looking for a specific lighting effect, etc.

Bad stuff: The rubber/plastic body is kind of a press-fit on the spoke, so they'll wear down if you're moving them from wheel to wheel a lot--may not stay on the spokes quite as well after a few changes. Putting the light on the spoke also involves kind of a twist-and-slide motion, so you'll want to be kind of light-handed to avoid affecting the wheel's alignment/truing. As other reviewers noted, I got mine in with nearly-spent batteries (one had been on in transit, in the solid-on mode), though I bought the 25-pack-of-2016's, and it's been working OK so far. Also note: if you're riding a bike with narrow chainstays or a narrow front fork, you may want to check the positioning before riding with these--may not have a lot of room between light and frame because of the dome-shaped power button. I was able to make mine fit on a road frame (Orbea Onix), though I have be pretty scientific about where I position the light on the rear wheel.

Overall: for the price, I'd say these are a decent buy, and a relatively low-cost way to get some side visibility.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  A MUST FOR CHILDREN !!!, April 14, 2011
By Carbonlord (South Florida, USA)
Love them, I bought a pair each or my son, daughter and my wife! I ride alone at nights and use excellent high powered lighting systems, but the same applies to non riders, so on my family's bikes they all have a front light, rear light and these. My kids even have the valve lights. You either use lights to see, and they need to be strong or to be seen, such as the case with my family. I WANT THEM SEEN AT ALL TIMES! My Kids love them!, Then I surprised my wife with hers, and even though me and the kids have to turn them on for her, we do. Hers are blue to match her bike, but the kids chose different colors, even on different wheels. It looks like a light show when they ride, BUT THEY ARE AS SAFE AS THEY CAN BE! It makes me feel better and I love to see them ride down the streets all lit up! Helpful trick for all of these, it is hard to get the spokes in to the inserts on all different bikes and my son has mag rims, so fortunately there are two small holes, where I attached them with clear zip ties and they stay just fine, it was easier this way for me and maybe for you! I did get one with dead batteries, but it wasn't worth the return.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Shipped with mostly dead batteries :(, December 15, 2010
By Gerald E. Hoffmeister Jr. (Seattle, WA USA)
I have two issues with this item:

1) The packaging included NO instructions on how to turn off demo mode. I had to go to the NiteIze website [...]) to find them - you apparently have to hold down the button until it first just glows, then blinks then goes out (stops blinking). THEN it will apparently go out of demo mode. Reason I say apparently is because I was not able to get mine out of demo mode this way - it would just continue to blink and blink and blink.... See #2

2) The included batteries were about 1/2 used up. After trying to get it out of demo mode unsuccessfully, I opened it up, removed the batteries and tested them. Supposed to be 3v, only measured about 1.6v. Replaced them with a single CR2032 and now the light works as it should - it's no longer in demo mode.

I should probably return it but since I've "fixed" it by changing the battery, I'm not going to bother - too much trouble. For once, I wish this was being sold by a 3rd party seller then I could leave feedback requesting they send me replacement batteries. Seems there's no way to make that sort of request when it's sold directly by Amazon...

update 12/18/2010 - I e-mailed back and forth with customer support at NiteIze and they're sending me a new set of batteries. And the packaging should have had instructions for getting the light out of demo mode. Likely I just got some old stock. Also she said that the CR2032s would work (which I knew) but the light wouldn't be as bright which makes sense - 3v vs 6v. Changing my rating to 4 stars...

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Surprised by negative reviews, November 6, 2010
By Gene Leynes (Chicago, IL United States)
After using this product for the past month, I'm surprised to see so many negative reviews, because I have had no trouble with my lights.

I think they provide very good visibility from the front and from behind (although the non-blue colors might be brighter). I notice that when I'm riding in downtown Chicago that the lights turn heads in all directions, even though the street lights are very bright downtown (and the pedestrians walk like total zombies to the train). On the dark side streets I have no doubt that these lights really increase my visibility.

I have had not had the batteries wear out, and I use them almost daily (albeit for a short ride). Maybe there was a bad batch? It's easy to have a little bit of a connection that will sap the current on the batteries in devices like this.

This product would be quite easy to steal, but guess what? Theives don't generally steal safety equipment! Plus, when they're turned off they look quite unimpressive; which is fine with me because that means that nobody wants them! If you're still worried about theft, then you can easily take them on and off when you go places.

When they're turned on, they look cool, and I get compliments on them almost every time I ride somewhere. I think it's a really smart product, and I love it's simplicity and low price.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Awesome Lights!, October 14, 2010
By Trinkie
I purchased these lights to outfit 4 bikes (4 lights per bike), as we often do group night riding. These lights are quite awesome! While riding at night previously, with just a head and tail light, we did not get the ROAD RESPECT we deserved. Since installation of these amazing lights, cars give us a wide berth, and even stop, if only to see what is the source of all that bright color. I love these lights, and wish I'd had them even sooner. Try them, you'll like them too!

This is a really nice item. It fits the bicycle wheel really well and it looks good. I highly recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Fun, don't know how well people can see us., September 2, 2010
By Jon Daley (Pittsburgh, PA)
We bought two of these to go our my daughter's trailer. The colors are fun, and my boys really like them, and want to turn it on all the time.

I haven't driven myself to see what it looks like, but I think it works well.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Blinks with taillight, at varying distances from it. Attention-grabbing., August 28, 2010
By Bo88y
I got one of these a month ago along with a Planet Bike Blinky taillight. The SpokeLit and the taillight blink in unison, and as the wheel goes around, it gives a kind of "pumping" effect. Very effective. These don't contribute to visibility from dead-straight behind, so they should be used in conjunction with a regular taillight, but as soon as a car gets about 5-10 degrees off the stern, they add a new element of attention-getting visibilty.
~ Another commenter suggested using snap-ties to make these more secure and harder to steal-- good idea.
~ Very pleased with SpokeLit.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Functional and Cool, August 23, 2010
By Joe C
These lights truly serve their purpose. If you are looking to be seen I can't recommend this enough. At about only 10mph you can easily see the streaming affect from the lights. Easy install and won't scuff your spokes like most reflectors seem to. I love the rainbow affect and can say the only drawback is the life of the batteries but hell at $5 you can power these for a year!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great for the price!, May 17, 2010
By A. Loehrer (Sacramento, CA)
I bought the multi-color for me and the green for my husband. I bought them on a tuesday and we recieved them on saturday (fast shipping!!!). They are such cute lights to add visability and flare to your bike. The reason I gave them 4 stars is that they are designed to snap onto the spoke and I am afraid they might not hold that well. They are holding fine right now, but I would check them before doing a long or bumpy ride. The multi-color one changes colors. It isn't like it looks in the picture. When you turn it on it is red, then it changes colors to purple, blue, green, white and yellow. It is really neat, but not what I was expecting. We love them!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Two minor problems, April 25, 2010
By Lawrence Johnson
These lights are great! I use them under conditions when motorists might not expect to see a bicycle on the road, such as very late at night. I only have two minor problems, both related to securing the lights to the spokes. You have to weave the lights between successive spokes in order to hold them securely. Its easy to warp the flexible light a bit too much so that the battery/switch mechanism malfunctions. On the other hand, if not secure, the light can work itself free and drop off. I just lost one of my two spoke lights and have to purchase another.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Awesome, March 29, 2010
By D Leggott (Nebraska, USA)
Goes on easy and really makes an impression when you're going down the street. Great price. Would be nice to have a way to screw it onto your spokes so somebody could not steal it though.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  short bang?, September 25, 2011
By gotsSkilz?
I bought two, I took them for a couple of bike rides didn't use them much besides coming back from work. The attention these suckers got were amazing. They are bright for drivers to notice you in the street. The only downside is that mine lasted for only a month. I suggest getting extra batteries.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Product, September 25, 2011
By JasonL527
They're easy to install and uninstall which is good for me b/c I don't want them to get stolen when I lock up my bike. They don't work too well until the the sun has set but once it's set it definitely seems to work really well. I would give it 5 stars but somehow a car still didn't manage to see me* when I had them on my bike and the car rubbed up against me until the passenger saw me. *It was raining. I would definitely recommend to increase your visibility but you should also have a tail light, head light and maybe something else as well. You can put as many lights on yourself as you want but it's like motorcycles, people still don't see them. Ride defensively regardless

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Good concept, bad execution, September 22, 2011
By KG
These are really cool when they work, but unfortunately either fall off or burn out quickly. I'm getting tired of buying new ones and replacing the batteries. I'm going to find something else.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Rather bright and easy to "install", September 14, 2011
By PezLee
Beware: These items are being activated prior to shipping (possibly for testing?) and the batteries were dead on arrival. Therefore I would suggest buying batteries at the same time you buy these.

The SpokeLits installed easily and they are easy to turn on/off. As someone who used to cycle more than ten thousand miles a year (easy) I would suggest this to people who commute by bike or who ride primarily in the city.
