This is the absolute brightest solar-powered, motion-activated outdoor security floodlights on the market. The 80 LEDs never burn out or need changing. This unit puts out the light equivalent of a 40 watt halogen bulb without using one bit of electricity, drawing the free power of the sun. This means low energy costs and low environmental impact with an amazing amount of light. Installation is so simple, no electrician needed.

Yes, it is definitely junk! Don't buy it., September 17, 2010

My experience with this light was identical to David Tanaka's who wrote the review entitled "Junk, Junk, Junk." Like David, I was initially very pleased with the light. It was both bright enough for my application and worked fine for about five months. However, after five months it started to turn on intermittently and then completely ceased operating. I sent two emails to Maxsa requesting directions for troubleshooting the unit, but did not receive the courtesy of a response.
Since I had already lost my $80 investment on the light I decided to disassemble it and look for any obvious lose or broken wires and components. I found nothing. I then checked the output from the solar panel and determined that it was providing an approximate 8 volt trickle charge. I then checked the charge on the battery and found it to be about 6 volts. To my surprise, when I reassembled the unit it did turn on. Unfortunately, within seconds the light began to dim as the battery was drained. Obviously, the battery is no longer holding a charge even though it is only 5 months old. That comes to about $16.00/month for operating this light. Not a very good investment.
I cannot recommend this light. In fact, I strongly recommend that you look elsewhere for your lighting needs.

Zero complaints!, July 23, 2011
By Skirge (Sayreville, NJ United States)

I bought my first one of these back in July 2009 and bought a second one in April 2010, simply because it worked so well and I had other areas of the property I wanted to light up. I read a number of reviews about the lights not working after a while, but I have not had that happen on these or my MAXSA Innovations 40218 Motion-Activated Dual Head LED Security Spotlight I purchased in March 2010. Note that this review is being written in July 2011, which means the original light is still working fine after 2 years. We currently have the dual light in the driveway by our cars (parked front to back, one light pointed towards each car), one of these floodlights above the garage door (about 50 feet up the driveway from where we actually park) and another floodlight for where we take our dogs out back. Our driveway is quite adequately lit at this point.
Installation: Easy as cake. They supply plenty of wire so you can put the solar panel a decent distance from the light itself. A couple of screws for the light and a few for the panel and you're done. Note that if you're installing through Dutch Lap vinyl siding (i.e. a "puffy" surface), you're going to need longer screws for the light. Potentially, much longer if you want to also mount through a nice vinyl surface block (rectangular, not square). When mounted to one of these, they look quite nice on the house, as long as you can hide the majority of the wire. If there's too much, the excess fits nicely behind a surface block! With how particular I am about things being absolutely perfect, it takes me about 30-45 minutes to install.
Setup: Setting the sensors can be a bit frustrating if you want them to only turn on when there's something large going by. Otherwise, a small cat will set it off. We also had to orient the sensor significantly towards our property or else our neighbors would trigger the light when they came out their back door, which is 50+ feet away. Our one neighbor can still trigger it if he walks to a certain spot on his driveway, but he actually LIKES having that ability. Since it's solar powered, I couldn't care less! Note that, as the instructions state, the sensor can be a bit spotty depending on the weather. Extreme temperatures do sometimes cause the sensor to fail to trigger the light. However, this happens infrequently enough that it doesn't bother me at all. Also, ensure you orient the solar panel so that it gets as much direct sunlight as possible in the afternoon hours.
Coverage: Using our backyard floodlight as an example, the center of the LED array is located just below the gutter, 7.5 feet off the ground. At this height, it lights approximately 15 square feet. Obviously, the center of this area is the brightest, but it's definitely bright enough to see anything on the ground throughout the majority of this area.
I'm planning to purchase at least two more of these to light other sections of our backyard, since dogs don't exactly stay in the same area every time.

Very pleased as a deck security light, July 22, 2011
By BB Indiana (USA)

I'm very happy with this. I opened the unit and used a small 6 volt trickle charger to charge the sealed 6V 4Ah battery Vs leaving it out for 3 days with sunlight charging. The lead acid sealed battery is estimated to last for 3 years and the directions tell how to replace it. The battery has standard tabs and is held in place with a couple of straps. It should be easy to replace if you're comfortable using a screwdriver. There is NO snap open battery door, 4 screws holding the clam-shell must be removed to separate the unit to get to it. Too bad a 'battery compartment' wasn't molded into the case with a door for the non-DIY. Some will find replacement annoying but not me and life is estimated at 3 years anyway.
I use it to extend viewing beyond the range of an IR security video camera and it works very well. I probably only get 4 or 5 hours of sunlight then blue skies but the unit is so seldom triggered there is no problem for me. If this Winter becomes a problem I'll unplug the solar cell and plug in a small 6 volt trickle charger in place of the solar cell.
The battery is in the 'light unit' which has a short pigtail cord and plug for the solar cell.
The LED's are large diameter and there is a lens over the LED array. It is bright enough to be uncomfortable to look at when it comes on in the dark. It has 3 variable controls plus an on-off toggle switch.
It has a variable 'on time' for the light of 10 to 60 seconds. Can also be set to operate 24/7 or at night or anything between. The sensitivity control I set at most sensitive, night only and stay on for 20 seconds.
The box says it has IP44 weatherproof rating (whatever that is) and the field of vision is 180 degrees for the sensor. The solar cell has a 15 foot cord that mates to an inline jack in a short 'pig tail' wire from the light. Looks like a standard DC inline plug/jack.
Quite pleased, waiting for Winter now to see how it charges in the cold.

Bright light!, November 10, 2010

Ordered the MAXSA 80 LED unit for a dark corner of my 50x75 foot backyard where the dog loves to hide. Followed the pre-use instructions for charging and mounted it on a corner of the patio facing the dark area. It really illuminated the area quite well and I had no problem seeing the dog, or finding the pile he has a tendency to leave back there. I think it is perfect (at least for us) in that it doesn't effect my power bill, it is always ready to go, it provides an amazing level of light, and now the dog can't hide anything. If I was to criticize any aspect, it would be the brief period of time it is on. I'm sure this is also why it lasts throughout the night and always comes on when we let the dog out so I don't view it as a negative. For my use, this is one of my better buys. We have had it for approximately six months and can only comment on summer use but we will update on its' ability to survive a northern Nevada winter next year.

I searched the reviews for a long time and was not sure if this type if light would really work. I placed on the side of my garage about 15 feet off the ground and is amazing . Completely lights up the alley'ish area with a wall of trees.

When it works, it works., July 31, 2011
By Jerry (Big state of Texas)

Pros:
- Has a bright light for solar
- able to put it where ever you want
Cons:
- Turns on during the day when there is full sun, so at night the battery is dead
- Sensor does not always work. 20% time it works like it should
I would not recommend this item.

Powerful and easy to assemble, but cheaply made;, July 16, 2011
By B.K.. (NYC)

I used these lights and they are ok for lighting the areas.
They are easy to assemble and very easy to figure out how
they would function the best; They are powerful ones.
They work ok. But they won't last long since they are
made cheaply;
