Inflates car tires too, January 5, 2010
By Aragorn (Minas Anor, GD)
|
|
I picked one of these the other day at the big bricks and mortar store. Mainly for my car. The guy in the 'car and tires' department looked like he was about to have a heart attack - "get a FOOT pump" he kept repeating, "these are for BIKES, not cars". When challenged, he wasn't able to actually find and show me the foot pump so the Bell Floor Pump with Gauge it was.
To make the short story short, I got all 4 tires inflated from 28 psi to the recommended 33 psi in about 10 minutes. It was about 25-30 pumps per tire to raise the pressure by 5 psi and I didn't break a sweat - cold winter, cold garage.
The good things this pump has going for are:
- comfortable grip
- pretty good pumping volume - sending a lot of air into the tire with each press
- air does not escape once it's mounted on the tire
- inexpensive
The not so good things:
- air hose is pretty short and on an SUV or truck you may have to roll it a little if the spout happens to be too high for the short hose
- the foot rests seem to be relatively easy to break plastic so you handle it with care
- the gauge readings are not reliable - they really show you the pressure in the pump not in the tire - used the Accutire MS-4350B Programmable Digital Tire Gauge for precise measurements
Briefly: this is a perfect pump for bikes and a good one for small cars, maybe not so convenient but still usable with trucks and really big SUVs.

Good up to 60psi, May 9, 2010
By Dunbar M (Southern California)
|
|
Bought this at a big box retailer to use on my hybrid bike. It's easy to use up to 60psi but after that it gets really hard (almost impossible over 80psi.) I run about 70-80psi which means it's too hard to use for regular "topping off" of tire pressure.

Very nice., April 11, 2010

Easy to pump and gets them full quickly! Mainly plastic construction except for the plunger and the plunger tube. Although it is mainly plastic it still feels pretty sturdy. Hopefully it holds up for a long time.

Diaphragm Broke in Record Time, June 21, 2010
By J. Rudolph Smith (New York, NY)
|
|
Bought this for my son at college in March. He used it infrequently, then brought it home. I used it on my bikes, neither of which requires more than 70 - 80 psi. Last week the diaphragm -- the gizmo which keeps the air in, creates the pressure to pump up the tires -- broke, or split, so that the pump audibly leaks air and will not under any circumstances get a tire above 60 lbs. It must be split. This is about three months, with light use, AND THAT IS UNACCEPTABLE. I DON'T CARE HOW CHEAP THIS THING IS, IT SHOULD NOT BREAK IN THAT TIME PERIOD.
And just try to find a way to communicate with Amazon (the direct seller)about this, so as to secure a replacement diaphragm! No way. Or try to find an address and phone number for Bell.
I like Amazon, in general, and would much rather be writing a positive review.

Cheap, but maybe adequate for very low pressure applications, September 9, 2010
By Eric E. Haas (Holland, MI USA)
|
|
OK, this thing is darn inexpensive. It MAY be a good value because of how inexpensive it is. But ...
First, the good parts.
The chuck seems well designed and holds pressure up to at least 100#.
The barrel is metal and seems quite durable.
The unusually large diameter barrel means lots of air is injected on each stroke. It also means that you should be able to get your tire up to pressure with fewer strokes.
Now the bad parts.
The T-handle, plastic, seems ready to break off.
If you don't attach the chuck precisely properly, it doesn't depress the stem valve and you end up pumping against a "dead head" (i.e., the pressure rapidly goes up to "pegged high" on the gauge).
The unit seemed unusually difficult to pump (i.e., requiring abnormally high force). This is probably the result of having a larger-than-typical diameter barrel. This means that, particularly at higher pressures, unusually high amounts of force are required just to complete the stroke.
The gauge seemed easy enough to read. However, even on the very first time the pump was used, the needle got stuck for several strokes, then suddenly jumped 15 psi!
Overall, this very inexpensive pump may get the job done well, especially if your pumping needs are for very low pressures. But if you have a high pressure tire you want to pump up, you will quickly become upset with this pump.

windstorm junk, July 16, 2010
By cpb

Do not waste your time with this pump if you are going to use it with a presta valved rim. Blows off of valve as pressure nears 90lbs. Uses a plastic fitting to convert to presta from schrader. Total Junk. Was not able to even fill one tire. Bought this pump new.

Sometimes It Works And..., September 6, 2010
By K. Jensen
|
|
Sometimes this pump doesn't work, especially when I need it. I attach it to the tube stem but no air is exchanged. I tried pushing it deeply down the stem or position it higher, makes no difference. I just wanted something to put 50lbs of pressure, nothing fancy. Why do people sell junk?

Garbage, May 27, 2010
By LFR
|
|
I ride a road bike with Presta valved tires, and always use a Schrader adapter so as not to break the valve pin. I bougt this as a backup, travel pump. Simply put, it doesn't work. Doesn't inflate to desired 110 psi. Fill tube too short; valve is only Schrader, not dual as is the case on good pumps, and comes with a little plastic adapter which is a joke. Mistake was elevating low price in the decision; pay for the shipping and you can have mine.

Broke completely after inflating car tire, June 3, 2010
By Shanghai Bunny (Portland, OR USA)
|
|
I've had one for 4 months, then I made the mistake of trying to pump up a tire on my wife's Toyota.
Just getting into it and then "pop" and the the air started leaking out of the pump.
Some seal popped inside and it's completely broken.
It's not a durable pump. You get what you pay for.

Seemed fine otherwise, but the nozzle broke clean in half after only a few uses. For what it's worth. The Bell name obviously doesn't mean very much.

Great pump, November 10, 2010
By seeker (San Jose, CA USA)
|
|
I bought this because my little hadheld one gave out on me. I always liked the floor pumps, but I remember when we used these as kids back in the day, it was all about 'feeling' if the air in the tire was enough. So, I like the fact that the gauge is on here, instead of putting in air, taking of and then checking with a seperate gauge. Just pump and look. Works great and glad I got it. No problems in function either.

Good product, July 26, 2010

I've had good luck with Bell pumps in the past, this pump is no exception. The gauge is not real accurate, but with use you get used to it. Better than no gauge for a girlfriend who pumps up her tires until they "feel" full.

doesn't work with a presta adapter, May 11, 2010
By Travis Nelson
|
|
The way the pump head is designed, the core depressor is too far in to reach the core when you have the presta adapter inserted. Which is particularly dumb, since it actually comes with the adapter, you'd think they would have tested it.
Maybe this is a good pump for a mountain bike or something, but it's completely useless for a road bike.

Great bike pump for mountain bike!, May 21, 2011
By V-Rod (Space City TX USA)
|
|
Great bike pump! I bought this pump about a year ago from Academy and use it 2 to 3 times a week during the year except winter to top off my mountain bike 26" tires to 65 psi, my tire max, you should always top off to the max for best tire performance. Valve attaches very easily to tube stem. Pump gauge is good enough but not exact; that's what a tire gauge is for. Only takes a few easy pumps to top off. Less than a dozen pumps to fill a completely flat tire. I took away one(1) star because the hose isn't long enough to reach the stem comfortably when it's at the very top while the bike is upright. For the price is a tremendous value. You need a floor pump at home for your bike, a frame pump won't do the job as easily. Always top off your bike tires to their maximum pressure, it's on the sidewall of the tire, before starting your ride, you'll thank me later. PS, used this on my new AirZound bike horn and took it to 80 psi max very easily. I can't speak about the pump over these pressures.

Nifty!, April 2, 2011
By bornforwater

I like this pump. The fact that it has a built-in gauge really makes me happy. I'm the kind of person who constantly loses things, so that it has its gauge permanently attached is really, really, helpful.
My only grip about this pump is the fact that the little.. nozzle? is made of plastic. It doesn't feel terribly sturdy.
All the same, it's done its job admirably so far, and I can't complain in the slightest.
Mine came with a plastic adapter for a Presta valve, but I can't tell you if it works or not. I've never needed to use it!
I gave this product four out of five stars just because of the plastic nozzle piece. If it had been metal or something sturdier-feeling, I wouldn't have been able to find any fault with this product!

Poor quality, March 25, 2011
By David

The pump itself moves a lot or air, but the valve unit (whatever the real name is) split into several sections and fell apart. "You gotta be kidding me!" I yelled. It looks like that piece just screws onto the hose, but I can't find a replacement. Don't buy.

Good for bikes with schrader valve, September 2, 2010
By Joseph Brown (St. Louis, MO.)
|
|
I bought mine some years ago from a discount store - can't even remember which one. Even came with a plastic Presta valve adaptor. But that is pretty much junk. A good Presta valve adaptor will be metal. This is a good basic pump for those that have bikes that take no more than 85 psi in the tires. Anything more than that - go with a better pump.
Both my hybrid bike and MTB have normal schrader valves on the tires. So, it works well for me. For a road bike or other bike with Presta valves, I'd look into something better.

didn't really work at all, May 17, 2010
By dana
|
|
My pump didn't really work for me at all. It would never lock down (my bike has Schrader valves) and it was impossible to pump any air without it locked. I think there was a problem with the little pin inside the pump head, it didn't seem like it was properly aligned or something.
The pump itself did seem pretty solid, so i'm not sure. But i sent it back.

terrible, April 12, 2012
By T. Conway (nj)

in less then a year the hose broke off the bottom part of the pump. it looks like you can unscrew it and re attach but when unscrewed all the plastic threads are stripped. same thing with the plastic bolt on the air head. also the head of this to attach to tires is so big that if you are trying to use it for kids bike or stroller wheels it's useless. in general a waste of money and totally annoying.

Broken before I even got to use it., April 1, 2012
By C.Bond

(Bought in a local store)
The (plastic) hose mounting was snapped off of the base when I pulled it out of the box.
Given that such critical portions of this pump are so flimsy, I can't trust it to last long enough to make it worth my time to bother with the warranty service. I am going to return it and buy something that isn't so poorly made.

Low quality product, February 26, 2012
By Pen

This pump has very low quality parts. The second time I was using it, the plastic flip on the valve broke off and the pump was unusable. I guess you get what you pay for. For the money I paid for it, I may pass the warranty claim trouble as well. But I will never touch this thing again.

Unreliable and cheaply made., February 26, 2012
By Bakefeets
|
|
I bought this pump at a big box store because it was cheap and I was in a hurry. I wouldn't recommend this item at all. The pump head is all plastic including the part that depresses the schrader valve pin. That part bends over time and the pump head fails to open the valve while attached, making inflation impossible. Bell has sent me 3 pump heads over the past year, and they fail after about 3-4 months of weekly usage. After a year of owning this pump, it completely failed. Bell replaced the pump for me.
As for the pump itself, the base is way to flexible and doesn't provide enough support while pumping. Other than that, the gauge seems reasonably accurate and it is possible to pump a tire up to 120 psi.
The best feature of this pump is the 3 year warranty and the fact that Bell is good about drop shipping replacements. That said, I can't recommend this pump because it's unreliable and there are plenty of pumps in the $30-50 range which are way better. Buy something you'll have for long after I've sent my last Windstorm to the dump.

I've had this pump for a little over a year and it is working fine. I use it about once every 3 weeks to pump up the tires on my car. The built-in gauge is semi-accurate, but if you need a more precise measurement of tire pressure, you would need a full-fledged tire pressure gauge.

I bought this 1.5 years ago and despite my kids's best efforts to break it with their horsing around, it still works fabulous. Never ever had a problem and it does exactly what it claims to do - inflate bike tires. It also apparently inflates balloon as my kids have used it for that too. :)
