Don't think about this one just buy it, August 22, 2011

The C-Star linear pull brake on the rear of my new Schwinn had a problem with a weak spring essentially not allowing the brake to be centered, instead of dealing with pacific cycle and probably having to send the bike back or at least the component back I ordered this. Out of the box you feel the difference in terms of quality construction and finish, additionally the design of the spring system makes so much more sense, allowing you to easily release tension without having a spring jam into your fingertip is definitely a plus. They came out of the box ready to go already balanced with plenty of spring tension and fit my relatively narrow aero rims (Tire size is 700*38c but I could easily get a 700*32c on) the pads are slightly thin but they have a large surface area and don't deflect as much as regular pads thus limiting mushy braking. The only issue was the noodle sleeve (e.g. round hollow thing that attaches to the plastic coming from the frame tube (tough to explain) was too small thus I had to reuse the ferrule from my old linear brake (no issue at all) once the brake was on though the difference was amazing tons of power (as you get with V/Linear Brakes)but with a fantastic amount of nuance plus it was nice to know on the descents you could really put some power into the rim. The front linears are fine on my bike but I am going to order an additional set for upfront once my pads wear down (brake caliper is only 6 bucks more than buying new pads. All in all buy these, they are well worth the 10 buck investment for a solid and effective braking system.

Foolishly inexpensive, yet well-made and work great., May 1, 2011

These brakes are suspiciously inexpensive but I had no problems with them. They do what V-brakes are supposed to do.

I wrote a review on the front brake. Product is great, but comes set up with the wide spacers. I switched to the narrow spacers and it worked great. On another note, I bought the matching front and back brakes, and I could not tell the difference between them.

I purchased this brake assembly for a motorized bicycle. It fits and works well and does a good job of stopping my 60 pound bike and 200 pounds of old guy from 20 mph.

Nice Upgrade!, February 3, 2011
By rox4jox (United States)

I replaced the old cantilever brakes on my bike with these V-brakes, and they've made a huge difference! So much easier to adjust and maintain, and a tighter grip on the wheel rims means better braking efficiency. Make sure that your brake levers can handle the longer travel required for the cables. If the levers can only handle short-pull cables, then you may not have enough control over braking, i.e. the brakes will come on too hard too fast.

Great Brakes and a very fair Price!, November 27, 2011
By BoulderSki (Boulder Colorado)
|
|
The brakes fit very well and were simple to install. They have stopping power similar to the previous V-brakes 90.00 dollar brakes I had on my bike. Most V-brake construction is similar so there is really no reason to spend a fortune as you won't see much difference from one to the other. If you are looking to see increased stopping power and breaking performance consider moving up to disc brakes otherwise these breaks will perform just as well as their more expensive predecessors in the V-brake market. Oh! and something that confused me was the fact that they were selling front and rear brakes at different prices. I did some research and found that there is no difference between the two except for the way the pads are facing. This can be simply adjusted so just order the cheapest ones and don't worry about buying front and rear.
PROS: -Easy to install -Excellent price -Same stopping power as some of the more expensive products
CONS: -No Noodle. This is a cheap part that should be replaced during installation. I would recommend ordering a Noodle along with the brakes.
OVERALL: These are a great deal and great brakes. I recommend them and will most likely purchase another set for the front later. Please consider buying a new brake line and noodle to replace during installation! This will make a big difference and are inexpenseive
Good Luck and thanks for reading!
TIPS FOR INSTALLATION: -leave the old hardware on and slowly replace each part that way you have a guide as to how the hardware was placed -There are lots of videos online for replacing brakes. Check them out they really help when it comes to the fine adjustments -consider buying a set of replacement brake lines and replacing the entire line. Chances are if you are replacing the brakes the lines are pretty worn as well. Spend the extra few bucks to replace these and it will better the performance of you new breaks.

They look really nice, they work great, they were super easy to install and adjust. If I had the money, I would have paid more for lighter ones, but I don't so I got these. I'm happy with them.

good upgrade for older bikes, October 23, 2011
By C. Saalfrank (Indianapolis)

Good upgrade for older bikes. You may need to upgrade your brake levers as well. The brakes apparently need a different attach point than what is std on the old cantilever brakes. This will become evident as you read the instructionsillustrations with the brakes.

Purchased these V-brakes to replace an older pair on a hybrid and couldn't be more pleased. Shipping arrived one day early, installation was easy and packaging provided easy to follow directions if needed. So pleased I purchased a second pair for a second bike. Don't waste any more time and money, buy these brakes, you won't be disappointed.

Light, affordable, effective, look great!, August 24, 2011
By David G. Roberts (Chicago, IL USA)

I wanted to replace my Cantilever Brakes with V-Brakes. After a little research, I pulled the trigger and bought both a front and rear set. I installed them with very little trouble on my Fuji AX-360 26" MTB. They aren't too heavy, look great, and above all function exceptionally well. The only think to be mindful of is that you will need a noodle and dust book. What you see is what you get: brake arms and pads.

Worth the price, August 20, 2011
By V. Chandrasekaran

The existing brake on my hybrid bike will attach to the rim and will not release properly. I always had to adjust the brake shoe with my hand every time I press the brake.
I did not want to spend lot of money on a new brake. I came across this one in amazon and anted to give a try after reading other reviews. It worked to my expectations.

I spent a few more bucks on these over the other bargain brand. I gotta say that these brakes are perfect. Its as if they were designeed exactly for my bike. Installation was a breeze. Worth every penny! Definately recommend these brakes as a replacement set over the originals.

Worked great., June 28, 2011
By ChicagoCPA (Chicago)
|
|
They fit just fine on my 20 year old Schwinn Moab. The V-Brakes that came with the bike were wearing out after 20,000 plus miles. The inset shaft is shorter on these than my originals, so they do not sit quite flush with the frame (hard to describe really), but it is just an asthetic's issue. Funtionally, they work perfectly. It seemed faster and easier (and not much more expensive) to replace the entire brake system that it has been to just replace the pads. It came with one big sheet of paper with instructions in about 10 languages, but there is not much to it really.
I should have done this years ago.

I recently ordered front and rear Shimono v-brakes for my older mountain bike that had caliper brakes. I received the order packaged very well and on the date promised. The v-brakes have been installed and have improved the looks of my bike and they work good too. I would not hesitate to order more parts from amazon.com and the supplier as I an very happy doing business with them.

Fantastic Brakes, April 19, 2011
By Alan Beadle
|
|
I needed to get new rear brakes for my mountain bike, because the stock ones were badly damaged when the bike was being moved in a trailer. These did the trick. They stop me MUCH faster than the original brakes did. I only replaced the rear brakes, and the difference between these and the stock brakes is obvious.
Installed easily, seem fairly durable. Glad to have them on my bike.
Excellent purchase, very pleased.

Easy Installation, Does the Trick, December 5, 2010
By y9kids

|
I bought two sets - one for a 1998 Raleigh M30 and another for a 2007 Marin Kentfield. Installation was easy, especially if you replace the cable and housing too. Brakes are very responsive. One note, the brake pads came set up with the large spacer. My brakes looked really wide apart when I first assembled them on. I switched out to the smaller spacer and the setup was great.

So far, so good!, April 25, 2012
By N. Levy

I used this set to replace the cantilever brakes I had on my mid-90s hardtail mtb, and they have made a world of difference. Even after a minor crash that left my back wheel pretty out of true, I was able to maintain good braking power with minimal brakepad rubbing. I've had them on a month so far and no complaints yet.

Good deal, April 5, 2012
By Joe

I had bought a cheap mountain bike for occasional riding. Of course it came with very cheap parts. I decided to upgrade a few essential parts like the brakes. I bought the Shimano Acera V-brakes to replace the ones that came installed on the bike. The difference is amazing.
Had to return one set due to the tension spring being too short. When the brake were applied the spring would slip under the post on the brake arm and spring free. Amazon was quick to replace it and the new one lacks the short spring. I am sure it was just cut a little short.
Overall these are worth the low price.

Great Value, March 30, 2012
By Dan (MI)

Great value for the price. The brakes and the spring housing is all metal, unlike the brakes that come standard on almost any big box store bike, even the more expensive Schwinns which have plastic spring housings that are prone to crack or break apart.
For all intents and purposes front and rear brakes are interchangeable, and the pads that came with these are unidirectional.
The noodle bend (J shaped metal piece) is not included.

Solid Brakes, December 1, 2011

The instructions are clear and the brakes are well built. The initial centering adjustment was easy and it hasn't required any adjustment since then. The pads haven't worn significantly in the first couple hundred miles.
