4.0 out of 5 stars.  Sleek Look, No Leaks, March 30, 2010
By d.w. (New York, New York)
Update: 6/21/2011

This cap is still going strong and continues to be a favorite. I've not yet experienced any leaks, and the D-ring is as sturdy as ever. I sometimes clip the bottle onto bags, bikes, etc. for easy access. Haven't had a problem doing this. I've also put it through the dishwasher a few times with no ill effects, though I don't do it often. I'd still recommend washing by hand on most days.

----------------

Original review:

Since moving from the classic Klean Kanteen style to the wide mouth version, I've lamented the loss of the stainless flat cap. Those of you who have a classic bottle with this cap know what I'm talking about. The flat cap was flat (as you'd expect), and needless to say, very compact.

The Klean Kanteen wide bottles come standard with the loop cap, which has a relatively high profile. This D-ring cap falls somewhere in between. It's not quite as low-profile as the classic flat, but fits better in bags than the loop cap. The ring itself is quite sturdy and easy to clip onto things, and falls flat when not in use. It fits fine with both the insulated and noninsulated wide bottles. I've never tried it in a dishwasher, but I would recommend hand washing anyway. I believe it does have a gasket in there, so to extend the life of your cap, hand washing is probably best.

If you are wondering about its plastic content, well yes, it's made of BPA-free plastic. The inside of the cap where your water would come in contact with the lid is stainless. There's not much else to say about it, except to add that I've never had a leak with it so far.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  "Top of The Line Top", February 28, 2010
By Weaver Jones (Tampa, FL)
For anyone that owns a Klean Kanteen wide mouth bottle, you've gotta purchase the Flip D-Ring for your bottle! It screws on much easier than the original top. The stainless D-ring is sturdier than the plastic hook on the original top, and it plain just looks a lot cooler! The stainless steel bottle has a neo-modern industrial look, and the fat stubby D-ring top really accents it!!! The flat top takes up less room in my bag than the plastic hook top. The D-ring is a lot easier to hook on your finger than the original also. It is a litte pricey at eight bucks, but hey, the Kleen Kanteen bottles arent cheap either.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Stainless Steel Cap, April 14, 2010
By Wisconsin nurse (Wisconsin)
I have been using this cap with the insulated Klean Kanteen 20oz bottle and love it. This cap does not leak and it's much more
ergonomically friendly and easier to use versus the traditional wide Klean Kanteen lid. I'm glad I purchased this instead of the
cafe cap because I have not experienced any leaks plus beverages stay really cold or really hot. I just wish it was included with
the wide bottles.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Better cap for widemouth Klean Kanteen., May 3, 2011
By Sean
I'd been using the molded plastic lid that comes standard with the bottle. Unfortunately, the gasket fell out and got lost, so I ordered this as a replacement. I like the fact that when I turn it over and set it down it doesn't roll around. It's much more convenient than the default cap.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  I love this cap!!, May 24, 2010
By KimberlyinMN (Frozen Tundra, MN)
I haven't had any problems with this cap and my 16 oz. insulated Klean Kanteen. I do always do a test "shake" after I've filled the bottle and put the cap on, just to make sure that it won't leak in my leather purse. I use this cap primarily for the transport of the bottle from home to work and then back home again. When I am at work, I use the cafe cap (that way I don't have to take the cap off to drink). If you haven't tried the insulated version of the Klean Kanteen, it is AWESOME! I can put ice in it at noon and there's still ice floating the next morning.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Works great, November 13, 2010
By Fishing Fool (On a yacht near Fiji Islands)
I'm not sure what the other reviewers are reviewing but this is the Flip-D cap, it has no opening and is as leak proof as the standard cap that comes with the Insulated Wide Kanteen. The difference between this cap and the standard cap is the D ring which can be folded flush when you don't need to hook anything onto it. On the other hand the standard cap has a fixed plastic loop ring. In my opinion, this cap should be the standard that's included with the Insulated Wide Kanteen but I guess there's more money to be made by offering this cap as an "upgrade"...meh. I now have a brand new standard cap that's useless after upgrading to this one. As to the cap itself well the D ring looks to be very strong made from thick steel?

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great alternative cap for wide mouth Klean Kanteen, October 4, 2010
By Maria Ho (Sugar Land, TX United States)
Great alternative cap for wide mouth Klean Kanteen! the flat streamlined design makes the insulated bottle fit upright in my purse. The metal D-ring does make some noise (if you hit a bump or am running) but the fact that it fits in my purse is really what made me decide to get this cap.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Cap! Absolutely love it!, July 26, 2010
By Courtney Dietzmann (MN)
I use this D-Ring cap on my 16oz Insulated Kleen Kanteen, and I love it! (If you don't have an INSULATED Kleen Kanteen, I highly recommend you get one)

The Ring --
The ring lays flat, which I like because it makes the bottle less bulky. The ring seems to be quite durable, though I haven't tried attaching it to my backpack with a carabiner when hiking. I do, however, carry it by the ring wherever I go. I have small hands, so the ring just makes it easier for me.

Cap --
I read others' reviews about the cap leaking within itself - meaning that, fluid may reside around the mouth/opening of the bottle, but doesn't actually leak out. Frankly, I don't see this as an issue. If you drink out of the bottle, don't wipe off the mouth piece, and screw the cap on, I'd expect that fluid to remain on the mouthpiece. As long as it's not leaking out of the bottle, and not leaking into some inaccessible piece of the cap, then I'm content.

Washing... Obviously you shouldn't dishwash something that's part metal and part plastic. Plastic can shrink with heat, metal will expand with heat... It's just not a good idea in general. I never dishwash my bottles. If you're like me and might leave a bottle floating around in your car for a few days, after you've had juice in it, you can clean it out using vinegar water (also works for hot chocolate that has been 'growing' in your bottle for a few weeks). :-)

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Poor quality, June 10, 2010
By Ana
The seals on the first two caps we purchased broke after a few months. After reviewing the Klean Kanteen website we figured it was our own fault for putting them in the dishwasher. So we purchased two more replacements and after only 5-6 handwashings the new ones are falling apart as well. I am definitely not impressed with the quality of this product. The price in my opinion is high for a poor quality imported product that we are sorry we ever bought.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Works, looks cool, but it's heavy and it rattles, May 17, 2010
By Traveling with Kids (Oregon, USA)
UPDATE #2: when I contacted Klean Kanteen about my leaky cap, they quickly dispatched a replacement. The new one does not leak, and now I can see where the gasket was missing on my original Flip D-Ring cap. Still, it gets 3 stars. It is well made but it's just too heavy for a sports bottle (much heavier than the standard cap), it still rattles, and the price is too high for the value.

UPDATE #1: I original gave this one star because it leaked on my insulated Klean Kanteen. I wrote to Klean Kanteen, and they immediately sent a new one, with no hassles of any kind. I'm still waiting to get it, but for now have raised the rating to 3 stars, thanks to their excellent customer care.

----------------

First let me say I *love* Klean Kanteen water bottles, especially the new wide mouth and insulated ones. Our family owns about 6 different Klean Kanteen bottles, and they've traveled literally around the world with us.

I paid extra for this lid because I liked how the d-ring folded down and thought it'd be a nice sturdy way to attach it to things, but this is the first Klean Kanteen product I have thought about returning.

* When I carry the bottle on my bike, this lid rattles like crazy. The standard loop cap does not.
* Minor issue, but this cap (2.5 oz) is heavier than the standard loop cap (1.625 oz).
* Worst of all, this cap leaks constantly when I put it on my 18 oz. insulated Klean Kanteen. They claim the lids are interchangeable, and why wouldn't they be?

I'll keep all my other Klean Kanteen products, but I'm disappointed in this one.

By the way, the standard loop cap on the wide mouth Klean Kanteens *is* stainless on the inside.

PS - Klean Kanteen, if you're listening, I'd *love* to see a sports (drinking spout) lid for the wide-mouth bottles.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  doesn't fit, March 9, 2011
By phirebug (texas)
I gave this 3 stars because it looks like a really well made product...except that it will not thread onto either my Guyot standard or my GSI dukjug. Maybe it only fits Kleen Kanteen brand bottles? I thought these things all had standard threads but apparently not.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Not Significantly Shorter Than the Standard Loop (Rattles), November 12, 2011
By Hard Core Camper

I was hoping that this Folding D-Ring Cap would be significantly shorter than the original (cheaper) one-piece hook-loop cap. I "up-graded?" to this Flip-Ring Cap, in order to afford more space, inside my MOLLE Water-Bottle Carrier, for other items, such as the Kleen-Kanteen Shoulder Strap and, maybe a nested cup, a small bag of Sqwinchers Flavored Hydration Salts, etc. ...
... I am disappointed and would return this item, if I had the time to deal with the hassel ... no sum gain !

To add insult, the metal "flip" D-Ring rattles and will make noise, if not secured. Not a great design.

I do not like it and wish I had not ordered it !

I do just love the Kleen-Kanteen 40 oz. SS bottle and the optional carry-strap is "adequate".

Save your money ! ... Go with the cheaper ONE PIECE cap design ... It actually is more practical (and cheaper).

TRUTH (Don't say I din't warn ya).

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great buy, June 5, 2010
By C. Washington
I love this cap. This cap is flatter the the one that comes with the bottle which makes it easier to store in bags. The only draw back is that the D-ring is kind of loose so it makes loud clanking sounds while jostled in my purse. But the fact that it's secure allows me to over look that.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Poor fit and finish, January 29, 2012
By Gear Freak (USA)
The stainless "D" ring is so poorly finished for nearly ten dollars. It's no where near polished, or even brushed. It's finish is so "scratched" that I fear it will be susceptible to rusting.

Heavier, and only barely lower profile. The smooth, rounded edges on the original loop cap has much better ergonomics than this thing.

It's not any stronger, since the "D" ring is mounted into the plastic - the shear force is only that of the plastic area it's mounted into.

The indents for getting a finger under it, to lift it, is not sufficient for my normal sized phalanges.

It rattles.

I would return it, but it's not worth the hassle. Even though the diameter is the same as other water reservoirs I own, it doesn't fit anything other than Klean Kanteen. My MSR Dromedary bag wanted to use it, and has the same diameter cap, but it was a lost cause because of slightly different thread pitch.

I prefer the original loop cap. Don't waste your money, unless you NEED an only slightly lower profile. Also, the metal "D" ring scuffs up carabiners much more than the original plastic loop cap.
