5.0 out of 5 stars.  Worthy contender, September 16, 2010
By darkwillow
This jacket has everything I was looking for in a cycling jacket. The fact that it's convertible into a vest was an extra feature that wasn't on my list of must have's, so to me that's just an extra bonus. It is very comfortable, and I really appreciate the length of the sleeves, and the extra length in the back.

There is a medium size pocket in the back of the jacket that opens via a zipper on the right side. All of the zippers are 'sealed' off, which increase the wind and moisture protection. As far as ventilation, because it is convertible, air is able to ventilate the jacket from the back although this area (across the back of the jacket) is covered by the upper part of the jacket - which is removeable, transforming the jacket into a pretty nice vest. The material is lightweight and soft.

It took me a long time to find the jacket I wanted as I don't like to spend this much on something I will regret getting later on. The quality is excellent, and I would highly recommend this jacket to all my fellow cyclists.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  This is NOT Rain Gear., September 22, 2011
By Castle Restorations (Raymond, ME United States)
I bought this jacket at the Pearl Izumi factory store. It boasts SUPERIOR water protection. This is true for approximately 5 minutes. In fact you can put your arm in it and run it under the faucet and it will not get wet. But after a few minutes when the material becomes saturated it seems to suck water through more than it repels it.

THIS IS NOT RAIN GEAR

I have worn this 3 times not in light rain and it soaks through in about 15 minutes. After my 40 minute commute I was able to WRING OUT about a pint of water from my wool base layer, not good.

THIS IS NOT RAIN GEAR

I was told by the sales clerk that this was the best available without going to an impermeable barrier. Um, No. If you are looking for a light jacket that will keep you dry through a passing shower then this is great. In fact, as a wind breaker it is excellent but it was marketed with SUPERIOR water protection and I think it bears repeating:
THIS IS NOT RAIN GEAR

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Jacket!! Easily convertible from jacket to vest and back, December 7, 2010
By Matt Courter (Tampa, FL)
I'm in my late 20's and recently got into cycling. I began riding to and from work in September and, with the season change, the temperature kept getting cooler and cooler in the mornings. I had bought Pearl Izumi cycling shorts at my local bike store over the summer and really liked them. So when the season's started to change I stepped up and bought their Elite Tights with the chamois. I was still riding in a long sleeve cycling jersey, but would wear an Under Armour Cold gear base layer under the cycling jersey. That would keep me warm but my chest and stomach would be cold to the touch after my ride. So I thought about buying a barrier vest to block the wind and keep my chest warm. I settled on the convertible barrier jacket for two main reasons. 1) I was familiar with and happy with my other Pearl Izumi gear. 2) I thought that it was worth the roughly $30 extra for a convertible jacket that I could use as a vest or a standard jacket.

When I first bought the jacket I used mainly the vest option but now with the season's changing again to winter I keep the sleeves on. I went for a 30 mile ride over last weekend in 40° temperatures and a 10-15 mph wind and I wasn't cold at all. Most cyclists tell you that layering is way to go and I tend to agree with that viewpoint. There was one time it was around 50° and I wasn't sure if I would need the jacket so I packed it in the back pocket of my jersey and about a mile in I was cold and took it out and put it on. The remainder of the ride I was totally comfortable.

When I was deciding whether or not to buy the jacket I wasn't able find any picture of it without the sleeves as a vest. So I was a little unsure when I bought it how that option would look. Well it looks great and it is easy to convert into the vest option. There are two zippers, one on each shoulder under that grey strip that runs from the neckline to the underarm on the jacket. There are a few Velcro pieces that then hold the back of the sleeves attachment in place. One Velcro under the collar in the back of the neck and three across the mid back where the sleeves attachment meets the back of the vest portion.

Of course this is the first cycling jacket that I have bought so I have no history to base it on however I am pleased with it. It wasn't disappointing and actually exceeded my expectations. I'm giving this a 5 out of 5. I'm sure there are better jackets out there but those are probably over double the cost. I'd be curious to know what makes those jacket so much better. I would assume they're probably lighter but other than that I would think it would be hard to improve on this design.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good jacket, but a bit over-priced, December 8, 2009
By seamus80 (washington, dc)
Used this jacket in about 40-50 degree weather; it does a very good job of blocking wind. I was, in fact, too warm and had to remove some layers. The ability to convert to a vest is nice, but a litte gimmicky - and probably not warranting the cost. If this was $10-$15 cheaper, it would be 5 stars.

Aerodynamic, ultra-visible, mildly cool weather jacket. Great for trying to prevent getting hit by a vehicle. Your safety is worth it!

I ordered this jacket twice and both times a less expensive summer jacket was substituted. Have fun playing the return game while you cycle without a winter jacket.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Jacket!, April 2, 2011
By Maria&Scott
The jacket is perfect for me. I wear only 2 layers and I usually bike in the early morning. The first layer is a moisture wicking, long sleeve, compression t-shirt with a turtle neck. The second layer is this cycling jacket from pearl izumi. It keeps me plenty warm in 30 to 40 degree weather. It keeps the wind off me. Its got pockets in front and back that are discreet and can hold all of my stuff. For a 40 mile bike ride that takes me a little over 2 hours, I carry 2 water bottles with cytomax (on my bike), 2 hammer gel packets, a drivers liscense and credit card, my cell phone and a garage door opener. Everything except the water bottles is carried in my jacket and I don't feel it during my ride. I haven't had the opportunity or a reason to remove the sleeves so I can't comment on that. It is a great jacket and I'd certainly buy another if I needed another one. You should go buy it. You won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great jacket, but not waterproof., March 30, 2011
By Contigo
I really like the fit of this jacket. It's large enough to layer up a bit underneath, but still form fitting. Be aware that this jacket is NOT waterproof and it is NOT insulated. This is a spring weather jacket or an outer shell. It is very water resistant, but I live in Portland and after a half hour in a downpour, it starts to seep through a little bit. As long as you're not planning to ride in a monsoon, you should be good.

My only real complaint is that the pocket liners have a tendency to get stuck in the zipper quite frequently. So far, it hasn't caused any real problems, but I can see it tearing the liner eventually.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Pearl Izumi Men's Elite Barrier Convertible Jacket, March 12, 2011
By USN Chop
I bought this in Feb 2011. I have used it for both mountain and road riding with temps in the upper 20s to lower 30s and it works great . It keeps the wind off while not being too heavy or bulky. Wearing the vest is also great for those upper 40s to lower 50s days. I highly recommend this product.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great so far......, February 14, 2011
By bikerider
I just got this jacket and love it! I have worn it in 20-30 degree weather. So far it has keeps me warm. It breathes very well. I like the collar that zips up quite high on your neck.
We are doing RAGBRAI this year. I got one of these for my wife too. I am hoping it will keep us dry and warm in rainy conditions. The color seems very visiable. It seems to pack well. I am very pleased with the jacket so far.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Not-so-great water-resistance, but nice otherwise, November 5, 2011
By N. Luchsinger (Seattle, Washington)
I've had this for a year now, and it seems to be fairly good quality (though I don't wash it too often since I mostly do short, no-sweat rides with it), still looks nice, and does a nice job of keeping off wind and a little bit of water. It's decently breathable, too, given some vents on the back. It's not very water-resistant, though, so I wouldn't use it when you expect to be in the rain for more than a few minutes. My coworker has the non-convertible version of this jacket, and he says he doesn't have any problem with waterproofness, so I could be crazy...

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice jacket....tough zipper., September 9, 2011
By Onthepedals
Jacket is form fitting, with slightly longer sleeves that are the perfect length when seated on the bike.
The zipper isn't as smooth as I would like, but perhaps that will loosen up over time.
Have worn the jacket with bibs and a lite T-shirt on upper 40 degree mornings so far, and it keeps me very comfortable.

While a little pricey, I have been satisfied with the consistency of Pearl iZumi items.

As with most Amazon stocked items, the jacket arrived in one or two days.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great jacket!, July 6, 2011
By ET
The first time I wore this jacket it rained, hard. The jacket was good for about 30 min, then I could feel the dampness. However, it dried very fast when the rain stopped and the jacket was always a warm protector from the wind, even wet. It is a very comfortable windbreaker in a convertible on those chilly mornings with the top down.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Jacket!, June 24, 2011
By Big Dawg (California)
Okay, I would have to say I wear this thing all the time when I ride. I don't have any fancy cycling jersey so this works great! I usually use this over my Nike Fit shirts. This Elite Convertible jacket works great! The sleeves are easily removable and can easily be folded into the large back pocket! I store my emergency pack and cell phone on the back pockets with no problems as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Pearl iZUMi does it again, June 12, 2011
By Ridin' Trek
I was looking for a bright, water-resistant, convertible jacket for early morning bike rides and commuting to work. Pearl iZUMi provided everything I needed with this jacket. It is light, fits well, has great coverage of the back side with the longer back. And screaming yellow is a great description for this color. It screams out "Here I am. If you hit me, you must be trying." There will be no excuses if someone doesn't see you, whether it is day or night. Thanks for meeting my needs, and doing it for a great value. I can add this to my list of Pearl iZUMi gear that has hit the mark. Keep on Trekin'.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  My second one, May 10, 2011
By RN (Los Osos, CA United States)
I was over all pleased with my first Pearl iZUMi Elite Barrier Convertible Cycling Jacket. It was impossible for motor vehicles to miss it and it did a great job of shedding water and wind. I love the way the arms come off and quickly make it into a vest. My only gripe is that the color was fading quite a bit prior to a high speed wreck that shredded most of the jacket and left me in the hospital. After some months of rehab I bought another copy of this jacket and would do so again. It's well made, light weight, versatile, visible, and comfortable. It fits well but still allows some layering as temperatures drop.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great lightweight jacket, April 18, 2011
By David Moore (Seattle, WA USA)
The name for the color of the jacket I bought is accurate: "Screaming Yellow." I bought a jacket to be visible and this one does the job. It has worked well for me so far as a bike commuter: it is very lightweight and has removable sleeves so I can use it in the summer, or add layers under it in the winter. I also like that is has several pockets so I have a place to stow keys or other small things when I am out on a ride. The waterproofing has also worked fine to date in light rains. Finally the price for all these features is good compared to the other options out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Recommeded!, March 15, 2011
By Todd
Very happy with this purchase. I went with the yellow jacket and to call it ultra-visible would be an understatement (which I like). This jacket works good as wind breaker over a few base layers for temps near 25 degrees. Now don't get me wrong, the weight of this jacket is extremely light (fits in back pocket of jersey) so it works great for temps much higher. It also breaths very well. Because the sleeves are removable, I wear this jacket/vest at temps between 25-50 degrees.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent Choice, March 15, 2011

I sent this as gift to our son overseas, who is a triathlete. He loves it and says it keeps him warm when winter biking. High visibility of the yellow jacket is a plus.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great for commuting, June 12, 2011
By owner of Poor Yorick's Almanack (Bainbridge Island, WA United States)
In the spring, my morning commutes are often too cold for just a vest and my afternoon ride home is too warm for a jacket. After reading the reviews, I gave this one a try.

I'm very happy with it. It's surprisingly lightweight and warm with the sleeves on. We'll have to see what the vest is like above 80 degrees, but at 70 it was just fine.

I like that it has three front zipper pockets as well. They're handy to store gloves and glasses when you're off the bike.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Be safe and stylish., November 24, 2010
By cone gobbler (Pacific Northwest)
I'm begining to like Pearl Izumi bike gear. Quality is very good, though a little pricey. This Elite Barrier jacket is a great windbreaker. The cut is good and it's small enough to cram into my jersey. One big surprise is the high visibility. I want to make sure that cars coming up behind me can see me. I mean REALLY SEE ME. This works and cars give me a very wide berth when passing. Too bad it's made in China and not the USA like my excellent Pearl Izumi Elite tights. Come on Pearl Izumi: bring the jobs home. You'll have a customer for life :)

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great windbreaker, November 3, 2011
By David Hawman
I wear this as an outer shell for my commutes. With proper layering I have been plenty warm in 15-20F weather with it. Blocks the wind very effectively which keeps the cold air from penetrating my other layers. Vents and zipper front are great for cooling off if I've put on too many layers. Haven't had a chance to test out the jacket in a soaking rain but it has kept me quite dry in a few wet snow storms. Bright yellow color is very noticeable and I recommend it for anyone commuting on the road rather than the other darker colors offered. You will stand out even at dawn/dusk. Folds up small and is very light.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Nearly perfect, October 21, 2011
By Hannelore Hansen (USA)
I love this jacket. So far it's been nearly perfect. I have not yet worn it in a massive downpour, but in light rain it keeps me warm and dry. Despite how thin it feels, it's much warmer than expected. In temperatures ranging from the low 40s to upper 50s I've worn only this jacket over a jersey. Below 40 a pair of arm warmers under the jacket adds just enough warmth for the colder temps. I would definitely recommend this jacket to others.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  SCREAMING YELLOW IS RIGHT!, September 20, 2011
By Njoyin' It (TN)
I purchased this based on all of the positive reviews and the fact that it is convertible. I knew that I was going to wear this to be seen when visibility is difficult, whether it be rainy or dusk. Screaming yellow is exactly that. I just finished a 5 day tour in Michigan and day 4 was very wet and windy and this jacket held up great. I got wet but it kept the majority of the rain out and definitely kept the wind out. I had a few cyclists ask where I purchased it because they liked how visible I was during the heavy rains. The convertibility is a breeze and there is plenty of storage for me. Very happy with his purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great purchase, September 18, 2011
By Textos (Maple Heights, Ohio)
I am glad that I purchased this jacket because it exceeded my expectations. This jacket is very light and protects me during my early morning biking. Its material is very easy to wash and at times my wife uses some household sprays to clean the jacket. I would not have wanted to know anything else beside the product's description summary publish at amazon. I recommend this jacket

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Not recommended for salt water sports activities, October 17, 2011
By M. A. Krosse (Westport, CT USA)
I bought a version of this jacket (high vis yellow) to use for rowing. I liked the convertibility between jacket and vest. I needed the high viz yellow for safety while on the water.

I row in tidal river conditions with salt water as well as fresh water. Unfortunately, Izumi's zipper fittings on the pockets corrode quickly in salt water conditions. This freezes the pocket zippers and makes them unusable. The fittings on the zipper tag ends are cheaply made and snap off if you apply force attempting to open the corroded zipper pockets.

Nice jacket design, but poor choice of materials.
