2.0 out of 5 stars.  Horrible Firmware., August 23, 2009
By Christopher Dear (CA)
I bought this drive to replace an older LG that had worked well until I broke the tray by accident. Installation was easy but when I booted my computer up popped an odd icon called "Bluebirds". Come to find out, it is some horrible firmware permanently install on the drive. I took a couple of days, but I found a site with other users, one of which created a program to strip this program. It worked. What was LG thinking of? The drive works well enough but you can buy any number of great drives for the same price, without being angered by unwanted bloatware. Good going LG, annoy the customers so they won't buy your products in the future!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good Cheap DVD Burner, November 2, 2009
By Tom R (United States)
Ordered this from Amazon and had it in a week. Beware that it is a raw drive. No cables or instructions included. It is pure SATA so you will need both a SATA data cable, and a SATA power cable, or adapter if you PS does not have SATA connections.

Installation was simple, pop it in, connect the power and data cables. My system found it on boot with no problems. My software has not problems with it. I did not install any of the software that came with it. Nor much of a review, but then it is just a DVD burner and ther is not much to say other than it works.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent DVD/CD Drive, and new firmware already installed., October 10, 2009
By Jesse T (Texas)
The drive was easy to install, and already has the newest firmware TN01. No more "bluebirds" and no need for you to search for and install the new firmware. The drive is OEM, not retail, but does come with some software : LG Burning Tools, LG Power Tools, PowerDVD, Power Producer, YouCam, and Norton Internet Security trial.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good Drive Except For Bluebirds, August 30, 2009
By Bill C
Can understand another reviewer's disgust with the preinstalled Bluebirds software. LG screwed up on that one, but the LG support site does tell you how to get rid of it. Have a feeling they took a lot of flak over this screwup. All that aside, it's a good DVD burner that does what it's supposed to do and does it quietly. Easy to install (but aren't they all) and worked right out of the box, even using Amazon's $1.30 cables. Chose to ignore the Cd that came with it as Nero 9 recognized the drive and works fine with it. At this price, it's a very good value. Now, if it will just last longer than the Samsung it's replacing.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  LG DVD Reader/Writer, December 17, 2009
By Norm (Ooltewah, TN)
I bought this bare bones DVD writer to replace a failed unit. It installed and operated without any issues on my Vista 64 bit system. The drive is quiet and fast. So far it has performed well for me.

It ships with driver software and I would recommend it to anyone who needs a bare bones no cables replacement drive.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Drive is OK, Cyberlink Software Bundle is a Joke, April 12, 2010
By Willitr
LG Electronics GH22NS50 22X SATA Super Multi DVD+/-RW
This hardware is "OK" since it's cheap. There is nothing that distinquishes it from any of the other cheap drives that you can buy. But the Cyberlink sfwr that LG now bundles with this hardware is worthy of comment. This highly touted software (at least by LG as their LG TOOLKIT) claims all manner of features and tremendous performance. But, try to play a simple DVD and you quickly learn that the "OEM" version "doesn't play Dolby audio" (pretty common on DVD's) according to Cyberlink's tech support, so with this fine package - all movies are now "silent movies". If you want to actually watch a DVD using this drive and it's "companion software" as the source, you only need to send another $50 to Cyberlink to purchase an upgrade to their software. Hmmm! Being able to play audio with a movie is an UPGRADE? Sounds like a FAIRLY MINIMAL capability to me. I wonder if LG realizes that bundling crap with their products only makes their hardware look like crap. It's not, but it's also no better than other inexpensive DVD drives, and with the others you don't have the frustration of wondering what the next product surprise might be from LG might. {Maybe they'll reintroduce the !@#?$ bluebirds?}

5.0 out of 5 stars.  worthless under Linux---UPDATE! Now it works fine!, March 18, 2010
By James Jones (Clive, IA United States)
Bought the drive bare from a local computer store to put in a new computer running Ubuntu 9.10. Installed easily, reads discs fine--but fails to write. Brasero acts like it writes it and finishes in mere seconds, writing just enough to create a coaster. k3b gives an error message and quits.

Contacted a very friendly LG support person in live chat, who told me that they didn't support Linux. I cheerfully told him I'd avoid all LG products in the future and warn anyone else using Linux against them, and thanked him for his time.

UPDATE! This past September a friend fried his computer and I offered to build a new one for him. I still had this DVD sitting around and figured what the heck, I'll try it. Worked like a charm. Something has changed such that it now works fine under Ubuntu, and hence probably other versions of Linux as well. (I won't attribute a bug to one side or the other--to do that legitimately would require study of pertinent drivers and standards.)

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Fast, Quiet, Reliable, June 11, 2011
By John Veneruso (Vancouver, WA USA)
Installation of this DVD drive in my Windows 7 64-bit system was a snap. (Asus M4A87TD-EVO motherboard with AMD Phenom II X4 CPU) The BIOS and OS recognized it straight away, making it easy and fast to complete construction of my system. The only quirk that I experienced (and the reason for 4-stars instead of 5) is that it made a horrible (yet not deafening) grinding noise during the first hour or so of operation. The noise sounded like some moving plastic part that had an extra bit of something on it due to an aging plastic mold that's been overused in manufacturing it. Despite the noise, it worked as expected and within a few days the noise vanished (before I got around to doing an RMA-return) So I kept it and since then I've used it a lot during the last two months to install lots of software onto my PC and burn over 60 CD's. I find it quieter and much faster than any of my other DVD drives that I've purchased during the past few years.

As for odd pop-ups that I saw mentioned in another review of this drive...I don't see any of them. The latest driver was easy to find on the LG website and it didn't come along with any unexpected bloatware.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  An excelent DVD/CD burner, April 16, 2010
By Jaime Jaramillo (Miami, fl, USA)
I bought this product for a friend after buying two of these for my own use which I installed in my computer. I am a latin and jazz music collector and I record extensively almost in a daily basis, and I have recorded thousands of DVD's and CD's and these litle gadgets are still strong. My recommendation is that when you buy them, both burners should be from the same brand and model if possible and alternate them when burning, try not to use the same for recording so they will last longer. I use the program Nero because is easy and fast although many people don't like this product I've been using it extensively and it works well.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great service but, February 27, 2010
By Biology does not have all the .. (Granite City, IL United States)
Quick and easy installation. Came up with perfect video but no audio. Spent the time and effort installing the software that came with the device, still no audio. The really good part is this: I got LG tech support on "live chat" immediately, and they solved the problem. I was truly amazed that a company this size was so helpful with a small peripheral product. The fix was to download shareware with the correct codex - and THAT is truly bizarre, that a third party program works perfectly but the included, LG branded software does not. The "fix" is here: [...]

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Burns quickly and reliably., January 31, 2010
By G. Martinez
DVD and CD burns come out reliably in this drive. Kprobe scans looked good with the Taiyo Yudens, and even the terrible Memorex media my friend bought fared pretty well.
No bluebirds on this drive. The firmware revision it came with has been updated past that.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Good price, May 22, 2011
By Scott Farra
Had to replace my Dell burner that would've cost me close to $60 if they sent me a replacement. If I went to the store and bought one off the shelf, it would run about $50. I found one for almost a dollor less than this one but would've had to pay for shipping. This one was $.50 over Supersaver shipping so total cost was half as much as if I went to the store or factory and it's a faster drive. It say's it comes with software but the only thing in the box was the drive. No disks so if there is software, it's preloaded but I have'nt found it or had any indication of preloaded software. That was fine with me as I did'nt need, or want any. It took just as long to reboot as it did to install and was running without missing a beat. Nice value. Hardest part was waiting for it to arrive, which it did when it was suppose to.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  No customer service, June 22, 2011
By Archangel
The drive which I received did not match the description in the listing - NO SOFTWARE, and it doesn't seem to be a DVD burner. When I inquired with the seller (Electronica Direct) for help with figuring out if I even received the correct item, they simply blew it off as Amazon's problem since it was ordered/fulfilled through Amazon.com. When I subsequently inquired with Amazon.com, they immediately processed a refund for the drive and invited me to order another - without returning the original drive. KUDOS to Amazon, but I still wonder, is it really the wrong drive or not?

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great, but..., November 18, 2009
By How can you pluralize 'The Lone R.. (ca)
Unless I missed something, "Bulk," apparently means, no cables, no screws, and no factory box. Its a good thing I know what I'm doing and had a bunch of stuff laying around to get this thing installed. Its a great drive, it does what its supposed to do. Pretty much the same as the IDE GH20 version I have had installed for nearly a year now. Not sure what this business is about the Bluebirds. Never saw them. Perhaps that's why this drive was a bare purchase... all the birds were sent back to be eradicated?

4.0 out of 5 stars.  LG GH22ns50, May 20, 2010
By dege (Missouri)
Ordered drive and it arrived in timely manner.

Installation is no trouble if you are familiar with pc internals.

Not much technical data on the site but this drive model does not have lightscribe.

Which on my HP drives is very unreliable anyway so my DVDs see alot of sharpy pens used on them.

I only rate it less than 4 stars due to fact that my bios went crazy trying to figure out what it had. I also installed an HP DVD DL drive and install was flawless. Might be due to having an older motherboard. Either way, with some sata cable changes I was able to get pc up and running. (had to move data cable to my silicon imaging raid ports instead of being able to plug into my MB sata ports).

Have not had any issues to date and fairly happy.

NO Ad-ware found on the unit I received(see other reviews)and have written several full DVDs since my purchase.

In all I like the price and the disposability at that price. I would probably purchased another Hp product but dentalBookshop didn't have the model I wanted w/prime shipping and since older pc, this alternative fit my budget.

happy for now and recommend this to others that might just be wanting to replace an old cdrom. I have found that many times you get what you pay for and that cheaper is usually just that ..cheaper

Worked well right out of the box, I didn't have to install any drivers, but it didn't come with any software in case i did. For that I did not give it five stars, but other than that I have no complaints. It is not as nice and sophisticated as its more expensive counter parts, but It was well worth the money.

By Brandon (Omaha, NE)
Just had to replace my old IDE LG burner with this SATA model after I did a new computer build. Haven't looked at disc drives in a while and was glad the prices are so reasonable. Not much to say about it besides it works great and the price is more than reasonable. Only thing it's missing is LightScribe if that's something you're wanting to use.

This device has only seen light use over the year it has been installed (physical media being scarcer all the time) but when it has been used it has worked just fine. The price was right when it was purchased, and given that it was simple to install and hasn't failed, I'd definitely buy one again.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  No Bluebird Software, May 3, 2011

Unlike some of the reviewers who had Bluebird software issues, there is no software in my drive. I plugged it in, Windows 7 installed it, and it works like a charm. 5.0 out of 5 stars.  GREAT DRIVE! WILL BUY ANOTHER!, August 4, 2010
By Mr. Digital
I bought this drive to use in a computer I was building; I'm a system builder. I've used a variety of hardware and this has to be one of the best drives I've ever bought. The drive was a little wide for the tower I was using (Cool Master), but it was able to fit. So far, no issues. It reads and writes well. The best part I like about this drive is that it's pretty quiet. When the tray ejects, pulls in, and spools up to read/write (to) a disk, it's quiet compared to other drives I've used in the past. I might start going with LG as my main provider for optical drives. As far as what I've seen (and heard for the most part), LG makes pretty decent optical drives.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  No power cord, no cables, October 26, 2011
By N. Roberts (Atlanta, GA)
To be honest, I don't know yet if this device works properly. It didn't come with any cords to connect it to my computer. Granted, I don't add internal components to my computers too often, but it seems that somewhere in the product description, it should alert buyers to the fact that this drive comes with neither a power cord nor a SATA cable. As a relative novice (I've added a few IDE drives over the years)- I didn't realize SATA required different cables. My fault, and I'm sure a few of you are chuckling at my ignorance (don't blame you). But when I ordered the SATA cables after realizing my mistake, and prepared to FINALLY install the drive, I learned that the drive also requires a different type of power cord than older PC machines have. So now - two weeks after buying the &^%$# thing, I've now ordered a Molex 4 pin to 2 x 15 pin adapter. And I'm frustrated - three separate transactions to (hopefully) update my DVD burner. Very frustrating. It seems that, since Amazon isn't exactly a geek-oriented marketplace, this type of info should be included.
******
Ok - writing later now. Power cord arrived and I installed the drive. Worked very well on my first burn - so I'm happy.

This drive may be good but the SATA 2, 3, or 4 on my Dell XPS 420 would not recognize the player even though I purchased an SATA cord?

1.0 out of 5 stars.  DVD software bundle is Fail!, August 13, 2010

Price is good. Product works physically, but... the OEM version of Cyberlink Power DVD that comes bundled with this drive is WORTHLESS. It literally has DVD audio DISABLED. When you put in a DVD, you will be prompted to purchase an upgrade so that you can hear your movies!! I am not exaggerating.

I uninstalled PDVD trash and found a freeware "Media Player Classic" that works fine. Still, one should not have to go through the trouble.

Cyberlink is TERRIBLE!!!
