Product Description:
Dishwasher-safe, eco-friendly, high-quality stainless steel water bottles from Klean Kanteen offer a great alternative to plastic and lined metal bottles. Constructed of food-grade #304 stainless steel, Kleen Kanteen bottles are BPA-free and 100 percent recyclable.

An all-stainless steel interior, 18/8 stainless caps, and stainless steel threads mean the bottles won't retain or leach flavors, so you get a fresh, clean, crisp drink every time. Because Klean Kanteen bottles are constructed of food-grade stainless steel, they're not coated with a plastic or epoxy lining like aluminum bottles.

The new wide mouth line of bottles have an opening more than two inches in diameter, which makes filling, pouring, and cleaning the bottle a cinch, and the universal thread design works with most standard backcountry water filters without an adapter. With the Klean Kanteen Wide, you have even more earth- and body-friendly choices.

They come in five sizes, ranging from 12 to 64 ounces, and all come in pure, shiny brushed stainless steel. The wide bottles are shorter and more compact than Klean Kanteen Classic bottles but incorporate the same slim design, meaning sizes up to 27 ounces fit in most cup holders. They also come standard with the Stainless Loop Cap, which works seamlessly with the S-Biner, so it's a snap to clip it right onto a shoulder strap or pack.

All Klean Kanteen bottles, caps, and lids have a one-year warranty against manufacturer's defects.

About Klean Kanteen
Before anyone else was making stainless steel water bottles for personal daily hydration, before the current widespread concern about health and environmental issues in relation to plastics, Klean Kanteen was cobbling together the first Klean Kanteen prototype from items bought at the local hardware store in Chico, California. In 2004, the first Klean Kanteen bottles were released because the company wanted to give people something better than plastic and aluminum--a lightweight, reusable, body-friendly bottle free of BPA; a bottle durable enough to last a lifetime; an easy-to-clean, easy-to-carry beverage container for people of all ages; a bottle that keeps drinks fresh and clean-tasting no matter how many times you refill it; a simple design engineered for function in every way. In those early days, Klean Kanteen shared bottles with people at music festivals, environmental fairs, outdoor recreation events, and other sorts of progressive gatherings.

Klean Kanteen has grown over the past five years from a tiny, upstart company to a leader in the stainless beverage bottle industry. During this time, it's also taken significant steps toward lowering the environmental footprint through consideration and adjustments in every aspect of production facilities and practices. Ensuring office paper is 100 percent post-consumer content, providing hand and dish soaps that are fair trade and , using Energy Star-certified office equipment--these are just a few of Earth-in-mind internal operations choices. This commitment to sustainability also extends to the very beginning of the production process, where Klean Kanteen has increased oversight and conducted third-party audits of factories to ensure they're meeting Klean Kanteen?s high environmental and fair labor standards.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Noxious green goo, September 22, 2009
By Scott SD (San Diego, CA)
I love the design of the bottle but I'm having a problem with some sort of bitter green goo on the lip of the bottle. It appears to be coming from the seam that is just above the threads about 3/16 of an inch below the rim.

When I got the bottle I washed it by hand using dish soap and hand dried it. I put water in the bottle, tested the water tightness of the lid, removed the lid and took a sip. There was a awful, bitter, salty taste and I noticed the green goo on parts of the rim. I thought perhaps it was an adhesive or something (it resembles the remnants of a sticker), so I soaked the bottle (but not the lid) in warm soapy water and thoroughly scrubbed the rim. I licked around the rim and there was no offending taste. I let the bottle air dry overnight.

The next day I put cold water from my fridge in the bottle and capped it. About 15 minutes later I removed the cap and drank some and the foul taste was back. I can clearly see the light green goo on the rim and threads. It was not there before I capped the bottle. It does not appear to be coming from the cap. I suspect that when the cap is tightened it is distorting the seam and this stuff is oozing out. It is gross and I suspect that it is toxic. I am not using much force when capping the bottle, just hand tight and easily removed.

I see one other review here mentioning this problem. I don't know if this only affects some batches of the bottles or what. It looks like this problem might only occur on the wide mouth bottles. You also might not notice this if you didn't drink from the bottle directly (like if you used a cup or a straw). I sent an email to Klean Kanteen customer support but I have heard anything yet (it's been two days).

*Edit* On the third day I received an email from Klean Kanteen asking me to send the bottle in for an exchange and so their QC department could look it over. They thought perhaps the green stuff was residue from the polishing process that got under the rim.

**Edit 2** I received the new bottle and it seems to be fine. I had taken pictures of the original bottle's rim and the new one seems to have a slightly different design. The original bottle had a slightly rounded rim that was a little thicker while the new one has a thinner rim with squared off edges. I don't know if that's a definitive difference or just a supplier variation but I noticed it right away. I'd give the bottle 5 stars if I hadn't had the initial problem, I guess 3 overall considering the hassle. Unfortunately I can't edit the number of stars after the fact.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  "Green" Indeed., October 2, 2009
By Curtis (Southern California, USA)
Alas, since SIGG bottles were revealed to be the scum of the earth, I have been looking for new bottles. I thought I found an answer with this, the Kleen Kanteen Stainless Steel Wide Mouth Bottle (I chose the 18 oz./532 mL size). As you can infer, this "answer" only provided more questions. The Kleen Kanteen Wide Mouth Bottle is BPA free, stainless steel, single-walled, durable, and the wide mouth makes it easier to clean. This makes it perfect as a portable, lightweight, and most importantly reusable water bottle.

However, if this is supposed to be some kind of Super Bottle, the green substance I found seems to be it's Kryptonite. If you haven't already, read the reviews by Scott SD, C. Perry, and BookWormMom. I have not tasted this "metallic taste" they are describing when drinking from the bottle, but after looking at the hideous rim, I chose to drink "waterfall" style. To be specific, when I drink from it, the rim does not physically touch any part of my body. I have taken this to mean that the goo is what is causing the corrupted taste.

What all our reviews have in common is our experience with the "green stuff". I have reached a conclusion--heat is what makes this green residue appear. After all, heat is a catalyst. When I received this package, it was rather warm and the goo was much more abundant then, as opposed to after it was washed and cooled down. The ooze seems to originate from the crevice between the upper and lower part of the outer rim. Although I don't agree to the source of the ooze theorized by "BookWormMom" (the lid), it is definitely there and definitely more than a random flaw or occurrence. I don't want to wind up a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle from being exposed to this weird green ooze.

The goo is also very stubborn. I use a soft-bristle baby bottle brush from Munchkin to clean all my bottles--including this one. The residue seems to leave a permanent, or at least incredibly stubborn, stain upon the ...stainless...steel. No amount of soaping, scrubbing, scouring can remove it. It is a whitish-greenish stain (similar looking to calcium deposits on windows) along the upper and lower part of the outer rim.

At this point, you can probably guess how I feel about recommending this bottle. So, if you are a victim to this mysterious ooze, or simply want to know what this substance is before you buy it, contact Kleen Kanteen [...] and complain/express your concerns. Hopefully there is a recall or at least a definitive answer as to what this substance is and where it is coming from.

In the interest of full disclosure, I ordered my bottle from bayinghound.com on the 26th of September, taking advantage of their "SIGG Replacement Program". I was hoping that my fellow reviewers could also comment on when they purchased these bottles and from which retailer (if not directly from [...]). Since all the reviews complaining about the green residue occurred within the month of September, it could be a certain shipment of bottles.

I would like to add that this is an issue specific to the "Wide Mouth" version of the Kleen Kanteen bottles, the "Original" version seems to be fine.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Green substance under outer rim..., September 10, 2009
By Eco To-Go (Brooklyn, NY)
I don't want to say it, but I don't yet have a good impression of the wide-mouth Klean Kanteen bottle. I got one last night and have hand washed it (live in NYC, so no dishwasher) four or five times with a special bottle brush, only to still see a greenish substance under the outside lip of the bottle. I didn't notice it at fist, so I ended up drinking from the bottle for about an hour, noticing a lemon-like flavor. But on second thought, um, no thanks, KK! I'll add green oozy lemons on my own accord....

I'm about as "eco" as they come, so I have the patience to give the KK bottle a fighting chance and I'm dedicated to finding a good stainless steel bottle, but the average person is NOT going to be pleased with this right-out-of-the-box, elbow-grease-needed design flaw, to perhaps no avail (I still have to check it again when I get home). And the bottle definitely smells a bit metallic, which I'm not stoked about, though it doesn't taste it. So, I may just return this KK and find a new brand. [sigh.]

5.0 out of 5 stars.  no green goo, October 17, 2009
By Sam
This bottle is great! I love the wide mouth feature. I like the fact that the part you drink out of is covered by the lid. I was hesitant about getting this bottle due to the reviews about the green goo. I did not have any goo on my bottle. I also bought he D-ring lid and like how it sits flat while I am drinking out of my bottle. It is easy to clean and you do not need any special tools. I would highly recommend this bottle.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Warning, don't use the wide-mouth lid!, September 28, 2009
By BookWormMom (CA USA)
See the two one-starred reviews here, particularly ScottSD's review. I came here to post a similar experience. I bought the wide mouth bottle for my daughter. She used it today, she tasted a metallic taste and found a green substance around the rim of the bottle. It's coming from the lid.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  the whole truth, Made in China, June 14, 2010
By Enjoying the ride (Calif Beaches)
Strange when you read about their first bottle in Chico to how hard they strive today they still fall short from simply saying, "yes, we are doing business with China, they manufacture our bottles and our efforts to meet environment standards are the standards of China not what the typical American would think are environmental standards". Oh, but they have recycled stationary. The belching factories of China are creating far more harm than your plastic American made water drinking bottles. Remember BPA is only a problem when you leave liquid in there for extended amounts of time (days) or leave them in the hot sun. Geez, who wants to drink something that has been in any bottle for days or has been sitting in the sun?
Do not buy China produced products and demand that companies be forthright about how they are doing business.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent Bottle, November 13, 2009
By PCAddict (USA)
I bought my 2 27oz wide kleen kanteens, for my teacher and I, directly from their website. I was afraid to order from another supplier. I also wrote the company before I made my purchase. They assured me there was no bad taste, it was really stainless and all the other questions I came up with. They arrived within just a few days and I was excited to open the package. Sure enough they were beautiful! I have been using mine ALMOST every single day for school, work and any time I go out. My teacher did not like the big size, so she gave hers to her son. But, I kinda wish I bought the 40-oz and still may buy one.

If I do not clean it every day, it will quickly get a bad taste. So, I decided from now on, just wash it out every day and I have NEVER had any problem since. And there has NEVER been any "goo" in it. It looks just as nice as the first day I bought it. I will fill it with sweet tea, chocolate milk, soda, or water.

And I ONLY decided to even buy these after I talked with the company directly. They explained the old style of making these bottles vs. the new style. There's a chance if you are complaining you are getting some middle man's stock of the older style bottles.

I suggest you give these company a 2nd chance! I am actually going to buy an 18 oz. for my teacher for Christimas, since she is still drinking out of the nasty plastic bottles.

And do yourself another favor, don't fall for those aluminum bottles either-read about them, they can cause Al overdose. This stainless steel is the way to go!

And even the lid has steel on it. The ONLY plastic inside is actually on the rim where it seals-so it's not "technically" in the water at all! The plastic on the outside of course, does not touch your water either!

I am angry with myself though. One day I had it in the side pocket of my Backpack, but I did not have the compression cord over it like I normally do-was just lazy. So, sure enough as I was removing the pack, it fell out and all the way to the concrete! It got a small dent in the bottom of the can and a scratch on the plastic handle. Other than that, it even looks the same!

Just make sure what you are buying before you buy it. Go to the company for this one!

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Wide mouth bottle LEAKS, October 7, 2009
By JS
We bought the 18oz klean kanteen for my daughter to bring to school everyday, but to our dismay, the water leaks easily, even though we did our best to tighten the stainless wide loop cap. She likes the bottle very much, but after 2 days of having to air dry her backpack and books after she came home from school, we just cannot use this bottle anymore. Maybe a different cap would solve the problem, but we don't have any confidence in that. For now, we've gone back to using a #2 plastic sport bottle in her backpack until we can find a better product.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Quality Hits Rock Bottom, August 27, 2010
By Gilligan
I received my 64-Ounce Klean Kanteen today. The box was placed inside a plastic bag by the carrier indicating it had been leaking. All I can think of is that this is the green liquid I've seen in the other reviews. The bottle is not 18/8 stainless steel as indicated. A magnet sticks to it. This is not the case with all my other Klean Kanteen bottles. It appears quality has hit rock bottom. I am thoroughly disappointed. The sides are much thinner and the bottle feels generally cheap. It appears that Klean Kanteen has gone with the lowest bidder and got what they paid for. All the other bottles I bought for myself, friends and family have been a great product that will last forever. I'm hoping this is the exception and not the rule.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  KK can't go wrong, unless you add another K, November 11, 2009
By DeRogue (CA, USA)
My first Klean Kanteen bottle was purchased back in January 2008, and I was very happy with it. It felt durable and it was definitely reassuring to not have to worry about chemicals leaching. Of course, along with many others, I had a problem with it being made in China. But I'll give them the benefit of the doubt since the company is well aware of the Sigg debacle and their own reputation to worry over.
Recently I purchased the new wide-mouth versions, the 27 ounce and 40 ounce, and was a little perplexed as to the difference I immediately felt when compared to my old KK bottle. It's definitely thinner than the older one, and therefore has a more 'hollowed-out' feeling to it. It seems they took a little out of each bottle to save money, but that's understandable considering their ever-growing popularity (especially since Sigg's downfall). I'm happy with my purchases, but just a tad disappointed I guess. I would definitely recommend these bottles to everyone with a health-conscience mind :)

4.0 out of 5 stars.  No green goo!, November 21, 2009
By Andrew J. Hermiz (La Terre)
I just received my bottle today (27 ounce) and thankfully there was no green goo.

Pros
Stylish and sleek
Very durable
Holds plenty of water, I definitely would recommend the 27oz for all activities
Mouth is big enough for ice and cleaning
No plastic!!!

Cons
Because of the wide mouth you have to get used to drinking like a glass instead of a bottle otherwise water will get all
over you
When the water is really cold you get condensation
Does not keep water cold
You have to put the cap on tight

Overall I like it. I think the narrow mouth may be better but this one looks a lot cooler. I recommend it more for the trails (you'll need a carabiner) and less for everyday use.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  RUBBER WASHER!!!, January 23, 2011
By Dave Powers
Hey Klean Kanteen, this is a PERFECT example of a company being out of touch with their customers... Many of us use these for camping/survival and plan to boil with them...
The wacky lid on this has the rubber washer on the kanteen, not the lid like all others... great, now we have 3 parts instead of 2.
These means each time you want to boil you have to pick this washer off the threads of the cup (with out tearing it) get it contaminated with all the gunk on your hands, boil water, and then try and put the rubber washer back on after it cools off... Oh, you lost the washer by then! Oh look at that.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  (4/5) Not bad, had better from them, December 26, 2010
By T. Ho (USA)
I ordered two 27oz and one 40oz canteen. To my surprise, they were not packed nicely, the canteens were just tossed into a fairly larger box with a tiny sheet of brown paper. They should have wrapped each canteen with paper just like a wine bottle to prevent it from potentially being damaged. Also, one of the 27oz cans had a dark residue I had to scratch off before giving it as a gift.

Pros:
- Strong (doesn't ding up easily)
- Light-weight (Maybe not as light as an aluminum canteen, but you won't really notice the difference, plus steal won't dent as easy as aluminum)
- Reusable, environmentally friendly
- Just plain stainless steal (much better than aluminum because aluminum canteens are lined with a sealer and can deteriorate everything you wash them or leave them in heat)
- Cap is also stainless steal at the bottom where the contents of the canteen would touch then it is sealed with a food grade silicon
- Can leave in direct sunlight without worrying about plastics or sealers seeping into your drink!

Cons:
- Had one canteen with unwanted residue inside
- *** the caps aren't the easiest thing to clean and dry, the silicon seal is hard to reach and traps liquid under it (I had to use a paper towel with a toothpick to get under the silicon to properly dry it

Recommendation(s)/Suggestion(s):
- Buy this only if you need a wide mouth/opening canteen, if not, the original Kleen Kanteen (Klean Kanteen Stainless Steel Water Bottle) will suit you best since it's a lot easier to clean with one of these (Oxo Good Grips Bottle Brush or Water Bottle Cleaning Brush)
- Like I mentioned, the caps aren't exactly easy to clean/dry because the silicon at the top can trap liquids and other tiny particles unless you can get under it and dry it (what I use is a napkin/paper towel, wrap that around the tip of a toothpick or a dental picks and just scoop under the silicon and let the napkin/paper towel absorb

Thanks for reading this review. Enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Pretty good - no green goo., October 20, 2009
By NYC reviewer
Mine was perfectly clean, without any issues as others reported. It's a well made bottle that looks great. It's easy to clean. My recommendation is to buy a bigger size than you were planning. Also, the one con is that you have to close to cap fairly tight in order to prevent any dripping.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Bottle but Needs Insulation, October 15, 2009
By Megan Ellinger (Plano, TX)
I read through many of the reviews here and was worried about the "green goo" several of the other customers referred to. I needed a decent water bottle though so decided to give it a go. I purchased the wide mouth version and I'm glad I did--otherwise it would have never been fillable via the door ice/water on my fridge.

I'm really pleased with my bottle. I have not experienced "metallic" tasting water or the "green goo." The only downside is that the bottle really needs an insulating sleeve or it sweats and doesn't keep the water cold for long. I purchased a sleeve for my 40 oz kanteen from the kleankanteen website and now my klean kanteen will keep my water icy cold for the better part of the day.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  LOVE IT!, November 27, 2010
By average citizen
I recently (November '10) purchased the 40 oz wide mouth bottle along with the 27 oz standard and 27 oz wide mouth bottles. I received exactly what I ordered, in excellent condition, packaged well, and delivered on time. I got multiple different ones to try them and decide which one I like the best. I've found that I need the 40 oz bottle otherwise I have to refill it too often, however my husband prefers the 27 oz size.
Pros: stainless (of course), great selection of sizes and lids, narrow and wide mouth tops, easy to clean (with a bottle brush), can fill with milk, juice, sports drink, etc without retaining taste or odors.
Cons: wish I could get a splash guard accessory (to keep ice/water from splashing back when you drink) and wish I could get the rolled rim on the wide mouth bottle (it is a little more comfortable to drink from). Really, I can't think of anything negative to say about the product or company. None of mine came with any of the so-called "green goo".

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Simple and solid. No complaints., February 3, 2010
By Kyle (USA)
This is definitely the best water bottle I've owned. Doesn't have the awkward shape of the regular Klean Kanteens, doesn't dent like a Sigg, the stainless steal is great so you can put anything in it, the wide mouth lets you actually see and clean inside, the top screws on like it should... nothing fancy, of course. Just simple and very well done. And I haven't had any of the green goo that others have complained about.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Chinese Rubbish, November 22, 2010
By Zeek (Washington, DC)
I approached the purchase of this stainless bottle with some hesitation due to the fact it is made in China but found the Kleen Kanteen literature reassuring and therefor gave it a go. I use it for my morning smoothie and it was working well for this purpose but after several weeks of use, and despite my careful cleaning of it after each use, it developed some sort of odd corrosion all over the inside of the container. On closer inspection, the liner appears not to be made of the same shiny stainless of the exterior but instead of some sort of alternative alloy. Not sure from which nuclear waste facility this metal came from but I'm having none of it and have since quit using it entirely. I strongly suggest an alternative product i.e. US made Hercuglass (also available from Amazon). Used with its foam kozy it is of sturdy construction and insulates well. It is a much cleaner and safer - not to mention Made In The USA - alternative.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great planet saving bottle! 64oz, April 13, 2011
By GPG (TX, USA)
Dang this thing is BIG! Unexpectedly so. But it still works amazingly well. It holds enough water for me to drink from all day at the office without having to go to the machine to purchase a plastic bottle of water. There was no (0) green funk inside. I'm assuming that was a bad batch as nobody is reporting it anymore. Just make sure you wash it well before the first use.

The stainless is a little thin and butterfingers I am, I already put a dent in it, but it's still perfectly functional. The lid fits airtight with a very nicely contained seal inside the cap. My only complaint is that the 64oz version is so huge (I can't even get my fingers from both hands around it) that they should have included a strap or handle to carry it because when it is full, it is HEAVY. I don't notice any metallic taste as long as I keep it cleaned (I wash it with soap and vinegar once a week) and I fill it with double filtered water, a faucet filter used to fill up a filtered pitcher. The water is refreshing and in plenty of quantity to keep me satisfied all day.

I give it five * in spite of its lack of a carrying handle. GREAT bottle!

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Poor Cap design, March 4, 2011
By Hope This Helps...
I got the 40 oz wide mouth kanteen; while the kanteen itself seems good quality stainless steel (no rusting but it does dent quite easily but does not affect its function just its aesthetics), the cap is very poorly designed. Like the previous reviewer, I received the Kanteen with it's rubber O ring attached to the kanteen itself instead of the cap but I think it was intended to be attached to the inside of the cap but just got stuck to the kanteen. Without the O ring, the kanteen leaks a great deal; with it, it will not leak; but how long will this flimsy O ring last when it needs to be frequently re-positioned for cleaning & for proper capping to prevent leaks???

4.0 out of 5 stars.  This is the 1st environmentally friendly bottle I've ever owned., December 13, 2010
By Burger (New York, USA)
I was trying to do my part at saving the earth when I started to research the best environmentally friendly water bottles. So in order to make your decision at buying the best bottle for you and Earth heres a few things on the Klean Kanteen Wide Mouth bottle worth mentioning:

1) Wide Mouth: This bottles wide mouth is what made it stand out from all the other "BPA-free, go green" bottles. The wide mouth was large enough for me to add chunks of ice...and that was all it took. It'd get 3 stars as the original bottle design, but the wide mouth that gives me the option to add ice in bulk gets it to 4 stars.

2) Portability: Using an S-clip and a loop cap turned out to be the best option for me. I'd just clip the bottle into my bag and it'd never leak. Even with a currently broken cap it doesn't leak since the cap screws onto the kanteen and it looks like the steel part interior under the cap completely seals the bottles mouth.

3) Metal taste issue: I recommend you empty out your Klean Kanteen and not leave any water in there overnight because of the metal taste people say they have. I've tasted something like that only when I leave my kanteen with the same water for days at a time. But, its no worse of a taste than having a plastic taste from a plastic bottle.

4) Design: I thought the rounded corners were just to make the bottle look different. But no, I found out the curves actually help prevent bacteria from latching on and building up. It's made from BPA-free stainless steel and looks heavy, but my 27 oz. bottle is actually light. And I've dropped it so many times that my cap has cracked but the bottle itself has no dents. All this bottle lacks in design is a sports cap.

Note: I e-mailed Klean Kanteen to see if I can add scalding hot water to this specific kanteen and use it as a tea kanteen and they said no. I forget the reason but they did recommend a Klean Kanteen Wide Insulated bottle.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Watch Out When Applying Cap, November 22, 2010
By Nom de Review
The threads of the cap of this bottle seem finicky. More than once, proceeding by feel alone, I have thought that I screwed down the cap tightly and properly, when in fact the threads were not aligned and the cap was not sealed. Solution: you must look at the cap and ensure that it is visibly straight on the bottle. The bottle is excellent in every other regard.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Good overall, but messy, August 23, 2010
By Chubby Mama
There's a flaw in the 27oz design that allows water to collect in the ridges of the bottle underneath the cap, and unless you wipe it off everytime you open it, it drips all over your pants. People are starting to think I'm incontinent. Which I am, but it's usually not apparent thanks to the special underpants I wear.

Good bottle overall, inconvenient dripping

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Good bottle, but hard for young kids to close, August 5, 2010
By Randy Lynch (Cleveland, OH United States)
This bottle was as advertised except that the cap is very finicky. As an adult, it takes me 2-3 tries to get a tight fit when I close it. And my son (age 5) found it almost impossible to get the threads to line up for a real, tight seal. The result was spilled water every day. We are giving up and replacing this with another bottle.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Klean Kanteen, January 1, 2010
By Daniel
I am really happy with my klean kanteen. No green goo or anything like that.

The wide mouth was really what I was after. It is easy to clean, and the lid does a nice job of preventing any leaks.

Not much to say but functionally, it was exactly what I wanted.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Metallic "odor"?, January 2, 2010
By J. Myers (Paradise, CA USA)
I was so excited when I found these that I ordered 3 of them. My husband likes his bottle very much (and denies having the problem I'm having), but I'm perceiving sort of a metallic odor when I bring the bottle to my mouth/face. I've tried letting it sit on the counter top with the lid off or ajar, but that odor is still there when I drink from it. It's not horrible, but it certainly interferes with my full enjoyment of this bottle. Not sure if I'll keep using it.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Just another bottle, September 17, 2009
By Michele (Port Charlotte, FL)
I'm glad to have a simple, reusable bottle without plastic, and it's better than the mason jar I was using, but its still just a bottle. It sweets a lot more than a standard bottle and seems to warm up faster. The lid is harder to screw on straight than the mason jar was.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Germ free and water stays cold, April 22, 2011
By Amelia Williams
I'm not sure what the name "klean" refers to in Klean Kanteen but to me it means that the bottle stays clean. I find that I don't have to wash it as often as other water bottles I've owned because the stainless steel stays really clean. It also tends to keep my water cool longer than plastic bottles and won't break when you drop it like glass. I've had this thing forever and it's as good as new. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  close to perfect, fragile., April 22, 2011
By bike (sacramento, ca)
I had one of the previous generation klean kanteen 40 ounce bottles with a narrow neck and a plastic top. Seemed like that unit was plagued with issues. Lid separations, poor sealing if you got the steel cap, and water collecting and fouling inside the lids.

So this new model with the wide mount, I purchased the 40 ounce version again. They have managed to keep very close to 100% stainless steel in contact with your drink. It's hard to tell but I believe the bottle lip tightens onto a silicon seal in very close proximity to the stainless steel plate in the lid. I've never had the bottle leak even a single drop. Since it's uninsulated it does "sweat" with cold liquids in it.

I've not had the "green" issue, and am curious to see a photo of the issue if anyone is so inclined.

So with all that said, the downsides:
* Very thin gauge steel, easily dented even when dropped 1.5 feet onto carpet (if full). If they
are going to make it that thin it would be nice if there was a sturdy model
* The lip is dramatically thinner than the previous model, it's not quite sharp, but not nearly
as nice as the previous generation to drink directly from.

But all in all it's a big improvement over the narrow neck/plastic lid model. It's also an improvement over the narrow neck with any of the optional lids. As long as you can keep from dropping it I'd recommend this new wide mouth model.

If anyone else knows of a stainless steel bottle that's studier please speak up.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  great product, April 17, 2011
By T's Dad
This product shouldn't be so hard to find...it's rugged, light, a great size and will last a long time. Much better than plastic and much healthier, no chemicals. More volume means fewer bottles and fewer refills.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  would highly recommend, June 13, 2010
By elkutsch (minneapolis, mn)
I own the 40 oz bottle and have used it every single day or months now. my roommate has the same bottle and also uses it every day. never have had any problems with either of them. they work well, and seem to keep water a nice cool temp. since getting this bottle i have also bought 2 of them as gifts for others and both of those have been great as well. this bottle has gone on hiking trips with me and been across the US twice. it has seen its fair share of action and is still just like the day i bought it. i would highly recommend this product.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Love it, May 9, 2010
By The happiest woman. Ever. (PA, USA)
My kids and I have been using Klean Kanteen bottles for more than 3 years now. My only regret was that the neck of the bottle was with the exact diameter of my protein isolate scoop and it was pain to make my shakes every morning (I don't use a blender, just shake the bottle vigorously to mix fat free milk and whey protein isolate). Finding out that Klean Kanteen has finally come up with wide neck bottles, I immediately ordered a couple. Once again an excellent product! And a breeze to make my shake :)

5.0 out of 5 stars.  From Classic to Widemouth, March 13, 2010
By M. Raila (Chicago, IL USA)
I've had my classic for a while and when I needed to replace it I decided to go with the wide mouth. It is fantastic. I was worried about how the new 27oz bottle would fit into the Built sleeve I had used with my old 27oz, but it fits very well.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Water Bottle!!!, January 30, 2010
By wicked good analyst (DC)
I have the 40 ounce wide mouth - what a great design! And my water filter fits perfectly on the opening, just like my old Nalgene bottles. I gave this item 4 rather than 5 stars because the design could be further improved by placing a nurl on the cap like the narrow mouth bottles, because the cap need to be quite tight to prevent leakage.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Mysterious Green Goo Is Gone, November 29, 2009
By Brian W. (Fort Worth, Texas)
I was skeptical about ordering this product because of all the green goo reviews that I read but I decided to order anyway because the product sounded very good as long as it didn't come covered in green goo. I ordered mine and did the 4 to 5 day shipping and I received it 2 days later in the mail green goo free... The stainless steel is fairly thick and appears to be pretty dent resistant unlike some other containers. The product is basically everything that it is described to be and I am very pleased with it.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Durable but cap is hard for small hands, easy to leave too loose (-->leaks), August 8, 2011
By GayIsGreat (Tri-state area, US)
I love this bottle. I've stayed a lot better hydrated with it. I've dropped it a couple times, and while it dings, it's functionally fine. It's easy to clean with a dish brush (I only ever put water in mine, so I wash it every other day).

Caveats:
* Because the loop top cap is stainless steal with wide threading, you've got to crank it down quite tight to avoid leaks. Tightening it with the same force I'm accustomed to on plastic bottles is NOT enough! I've fooled myself a couple times (once destroying my a MacBook's power circuitry).

* I've got little hands, and the loop top cap is tough to get as tight as needed to avoid leaks. Hurts my hands on cold days because the loop top isn't well designed to give leverage (the top of the loop is small, so if your hands aren't big enough to grip the lower, bigger part of the cap--mine aren't--you're going to have to work extra hard to tighten from that small loop top).

Despite these problems, I'm loyal to this bottle. I lost my last one, and I'm going to order a new one. I've just gotten in the habit of tightening it really hard.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Functional and reliable canteen, July 21, 2011
By J. Chen (California)
Ever since I became paranoid about plastic bottles, I decided to opt for a metal canteen to hold my water. This Klean Kanteen does the job perfect. It's light-weight yet pretty durable and holds water tightly with no leaking. I have the wide-mouth 27 ounce unit, which for me, is the perfect balance between volume and size/weight.

I use the product primarily as a student, so it comes with me everyday I'm at school. If I have a full day of classes, I will typically need to refill the canteen two or three times, but I drink a lot of water. I also carry it with me when I run errands instead of buying bottled water.

I have dropped these canteens (while full) on hard cement before, and although it did put a dent in the metal, it was small and didn't affect any functions of the canteen.

My only complaint is that sometimes it can be hard to screw the cap on.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Finally!! the right size, April 27, 2011
By mom2serena (Charlotte, NC)
Finally found a KK in the 'right' size. I use this one daily for myself. If I am going to an event for just a few hours with family....its the right size to share with the kids and husband. And the best part is that its the right size to fit in the very shallow cup holders in my '03 Honda Odyssey without flying out every time I hit the brakes. Every other bottle I own (from many different manufacturers) fly out of it, or wobble...this one stays put. Thanks KK & Amazon!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Liked the first so much, I bought a second...., April 10, 2011
By boxofstuff (kansas city, MO United States)
After buying my first Klean Kanteen for my wife to replace a few plastic water jugs, we liked it so much that I bought one for myself. It has been sturdy compared to past metal containers, and better insulated to keep things quite cold/hot for hours. For my Klean Kanteen I purchased the extra lid for sipping coffee. It works great, but it can dribble and does not keep the heat in like the main lid that comes with the kanteen. Overall, I would buy one of these again, and may soon to replace a few cheap water bottles my kids use.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Another Goo-free Experience, April 8, 2011
By AJ
I loved my Classic Klean Kanteen for about 2 years, and when the Wide Mouth came out it was finally time to upgrade. Of course, various reviews made me hesitate, but I went ahead and took the chance. I have had absolutely no problems (especially not this weird green goo problem, which I can't even really imagine at all). I have the 64oz version. Perhaps the green goo only appears in smaller versions? I don't know why this would be. Another possibility is that over-washing could be causing a strange goo to appear. Just wash gently when you first get it... after that I generally only rinse it out and clean it with gentle soap maybe once every couple of months.

This Klean Kanteen has an advantage over the Classic because if you want a stainless steel top for the Classic, the steel top actually screws inside the steel of the can, producing a noise which is quite annoying in certain situations (a quiet classroom, for example). With the wide mouth, the top goes outside of the can's opening, so it doesn't need to be steel. Therefore, no noise.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Scratches Internally, March 10, 2011
By amdrocks
I noticed that there are light scratches internally (both on the cap and inside the bottle). They are not obvious when viewed directly but I can see them when viewed at an angle from a light source.

Does anyone else have this problem as well? Or are the bottles that you received "flawless" internally?

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Needed to return once, October 13, 2010
By B. Wong
First 40oz bottle I received had a strange chemical smell at the cap. I could not get rid of it. Smelled like unfinished plastic chemical.

Returned it for another 40 oz bottle and it was like the best water bottle I have ever used period. No smell, all is good.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Love This!!!, August 23, 2010
By Donnih
I use this bottle every day. I use it for water or diet soda. Since it's insulated, it keeps water cold for hours. And soda doesn't go flat or get warm. I also bought the cafe wide mouth cap, and it is a must-have for sipping, since the standard loop cap just twists off to reveal the steel bottle, which probably isn't too much fun to drink from. I bought this bottle in the summer, so I haven't tried hot drinks, yet, but I'm sure I'll enjoy hot teas in it next fall and winter. I recommend spending a little more to get this insulated bottle.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  An excellent water bottle, June 8, 2010
By D. M. Garland (Chatham, IL)
I have been using this water bottle for five months now and am very happy with it. It insulates very well, is rugged and fits in my cupholders. I like the fact that it doesn't sweat even in high humidity. I also purchased a drink top for it as I'm a bit clumsy.
After using this water bottle for a week I ordered another style from Klean Kanteen and am very happy with all the products I've purchased from this company.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Bottle, I just wished....., January 5, 2011
By Gonna Burn Some Muscle (Texas)
that it had a handle, b/c I dropped mine and now there are dents in it, but it still is better than the high grade plastic bottle that I had with a handle b/c when I dropped that one it created a slow leak so I had to throw it away.

Also another good benefit is the bottle is very easy to clean and doesn't leave that nasty "mouth back wash" smell inside the bottle, like plastic does.... YUCK, lol
