5.0 out of 5 stars.  Best padding I've tried., December 11, 2010
By Benjamin P Hummel (Columbus Ohio)
I'm relatively new to cycling, but of the 5 different brands that I've tried, these bib shorts have provided the most comfortable ride. The padding is relatively thick, making longer rides of 30+ miles much more tolerable!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  I love these babies!, September 8, 2010
By Jace Hirschi (SLC, UT)
Purchased these as my first pair of bib-shorts. I had been using a much cheaper generic brand cycling short that I was actually very happy with. However, I was given a jersey and was worried my crack would hang out with the regular shorts so I picked these up.

As far as I could find, these were the cheapest well-reviewed bib-shorts available. Of course I'd heard of the Pearl Izumi brand, but had never wanted to shell out the big price. I'm very glad I did! The day after I received these, I completed a 55 mile lake ride and they were amazing throughout. The padding is very adequate, the grippers on the leg bottoms are comfortable.

Normally, I order a large in cycling shorts, but I actually ordered an XL in these and they fit perfectly.

Will absolutely be ordering another pair of these!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Best bike shorts I have, March 14, 2011
By Jarrod Lash
After using the same 3 pair of shorts for the past two years I figured it was time to get a new pair. I order the XL ones since I am 5'11. This is the first pair of bibs I have ever owned and will not be the last. When they I arrived I tested them on a 40 mile jaunt and I was impressed. Everything stayed where it was supposed to stay. Fit and Snug. I would recommend these to anyone who rides a bike.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Ok but not great, March 15, 2011
By Matthew K
I paid like $50 for these, and they were better than the PI shorts I first bought, but I've found that Bonktown sells Castelli bibs for $70-80 which normally retail for $220. The chamois in these is $50 quality, I prefer the chamois in the Castelli bibs, but any higher-end set of bibs will be nice.

Don't spend your money on these, if you're serious about cycling invest $100+ (or wait for deals on Bonktown) in your bibs; comfort while cycling is extremely crucial.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice if it works for you, September 7, 2011
By drewshock (Olympia, WA)
I bought this based on all the great reviews. The product is well made and feels good to the touch. However, the pad just doesn't fit me right. The pad feels too bulky and is too wide between my legs. I'm 6' tall and fairly thin with a 31" waist and the medium felt too tight on my thighs and my boys (if you know what I mean). This was my first bib and I've be cycling for 30+ years. I think I will stick with shorts, that fit of course, they are easier to take on and off. Only did one short test ride in these and they felt uncomfortable.

This is well made quality bib, maybe they will work for some people, just didn't for me.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Feels Great on the Bike, April 18, 2012
By Bike Geek, Student, Homemaker (Louisville, ky)
UPDATE: I've now done several rides upwards of 20 miles in these. Haven't yet had them out on a 50+ miler, but I expect them to perform admirably. I've run them through the wash three or four times and they're holding up beautifully.

The only downside?

I don't want to wear my old non-bib shorts at all anymore!

***

As my current wardrobe of bike shores wears out, I am beginning to replace them with bibs. I plan to try several different brands and models over time.

Pearl iZUMi's Quest bibs are the first I've ordered. I got the X-large because Small was definitely going to be too small and neither medium nor large were available. Through the magic of Amazon Prime, I received them super-fast -- and, of course, I was eager to 'test drive' them as soon as I could.

As such, I threw my new Quest bibs on today and banged out about sixteen road miles on the 'cross bike.

Upon slipping into them, I immediately noticed the gratifying lack of a waistband. This is what I was so eager to experience -- no confining cinch around my (shrinking, but still not exactly svelte-by-cycling-terms) waist. I was worried that the shoulder straps might be too long, since I'm shorter in the torso than many guys, but that fear was unnecessary. The straps are stretchy enough to accommodate riders within quite a range of torso lengths comfortably.

The comfort of the shorts themselves is superb. I have only one pair of shorts that I would call *more* comfortable in terms of the fit around the hips, thighs, and 'badonk-a-donk,' and those are my rather-more-expensive race kit shorts (sadly, they're not bibs). The straps quickly fade from notice. There's nothing confining or sausage-casing-esque about the extremely-forgiving Select Transfer fabric.

Meanwhile, the chamois -- while not the greatest that has ever met with my 'rider and saddle interface' -- is very serviceable. It provides just enough padding to relieve potential pressure points at the sit bones without adding bulk. When you're riding, you don't find yourself silently cursing your chamois or trying to surreptitiously adjust it -- experiences I have definitely had in other inexpensive shorts.

I am pretty satisfied with the wicking qualities of the Select Transfer fabic. Again, I've encountered better, but at this price point, I think there's really nothing to complain about.

Sizing seems a little smaller than some brands, which I expected. A large probably would've been ideal for me; the extra-large is just a tad roomy (I figured that would be the case, however, when I ordered these). I currently wear a size 33 waist.

The workmanship looks solid. I expect these, with care, to last a good long time. That said, I plan to check back when these have a few hundred miles on them and update this review.

In short, Pearl iZUMi's Quest bibs seem like a great choice for commuting, training, and -- very probably -- touring. I plan to take them with me on a three-night, four-day tour in June. For fast racing action in hot weather, you're probably going to want to bump thing sup a notch, but that's not what these shorts are built for anyway.

Summary:

PROS
+Nice fabric
+Good fit
+Comfortable straps
+Very serviceable chamois
+Quality workmanship

CONS
-Less 'wicky' than some shorts

5.0 out of 5 stars.  great for the price, August 8, 2011
By leafsfan
Considering the prize of these bibs, they are fantastic. The size errs on the side big. I usually wear an XL, but I would be just as comfortable in a L. This was a great bargain and I am very glad that I purchased them.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  overall decent fit, but chamois a little too stiff and pre-shaped, August 5, 2011
By Vidiot
These bibs overall fit nicely and seem to be of decent quality fabric and construction. The fabric is on the less-stretchy end of the spectrum.

The leg gripper with little dots of silicon rubber is the first I've seen of that type vs. plain elastic or a solid strip of silicon rubber. It works fine and may make it bit easier to put on without snagging/dragging.

The main complaint I have with these bibs is with the chamois. It's heavily pre-shaped to fit in the crotch area, which isn't that great of an idea. To accomplish that, the chamois has to be a bit stiffer than it should be in that area. Rather than staying against your skin to protect against chafing, it actually creates a surface for your skin to rub against as you ride.

The problem is mainly when you first start out on a ride, but once things warm up and you get sweaty, it stays against the skin just fine. Maybe chamois cream may help avoid that.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great starter bib short for the money, July 5, 2011
By Das_Malefitz
This is likely the least expensive quality bib short you will find. It is my first cycling short of any kind, so I have nothing to which to compare it. I have owned it only for about one month at the time of this writing, and I am quite happy with my purchase. I have ridden about 20 miles so far in these shorts on my cyclocross bike and experienced no chafing, no sore ass-bone, and no wedgies or riding up or falling down. It is EXTREMELY comfortable compared to riding in just regular athletic shorts. If you're debating between shorts or bibs, definitely go with the bib. With a shirt/jersey on, no one can see to make fun of your suspenders and you will never have to worry about your shorts riding down or catching on the seat when dismounting. Sizing is true; I'm 150 lbs, 5'9", 32 inseam, 32 waist and the medium is a great fit.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Cycling Bib, June 21, 2011
By Randy Weber (CHICAGO, IL, US)
I have several high dollar Bibs and I must say that this Bib is so much more comfortable than the others that I own. The padding is thick and makes my rides very comfortable. The upper Bib is meshed and breathes very nicely. I will order more. I recommend this Bib for everyone.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good Quality - Inexpensive Bib., April 20, 2011
By Vince Liger
I have worn this bib a few times now both while on a trainer and on the road. It is very comfortable compared to cycling shorts. The Medium fit is accurate. Leg grippers work well so the the legs stay put. The 3D Chamois padding is adequate for at least two-hour rides. Also, the padding doesn't shift like some gel pads. I can't tell how much cooling the bib offers as most of the rides I've been on so far this year have been in cold weather. This is a good, overall bib for the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  First Bib Shorts, March 31, 2011
By Happy couple
These were my first pair of bib shorts and I am in love with them. First off, they have raised rubber lettering that goes around the inside of the bottom of the short which prevents them from slipping up on the leg. The padding is very thick and comfy. I have worn them for the past 3 days on my rides and I am a satisfied customer. Not sure how they compare to more expensive shorts but I am going to buy a second pair.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent, March 12, 2011
By BK83
I have recently become an avid cyclist, though I am not at the level of the pros or those who have a lot of money to spend on the sport. I bought Pearl Izumi shorts before and was impressed with the quality, so I thought the next step up in comfort would be to get the bib shorts. I was not at all disappointed in these. Quite frankly, they are great. The fit is excellent and they are comfortable for long rides. I highly recommend this product as it is a perfect blend of quality and affordability.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Comfortable, January 15, 2012

These bib shorts are comfortable, and they have padding comparable to other shorts in this price range. The all-black color keeps them looking new after repeated washing.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  A good pear of bibs, November 10, 2011
By AdamDePazPhoto
These are good bib shorts, no doubt.

I am 5' 8", 150 lbs, and a medium fits Perrfectly!

They make every ride much more enjoyable, and are deffinately worth the price.

I hand wash them, but I've put them in the washing machine and they come out fine (only drip/hang to dry!)

The chamois (padding) is very comfy and large.

A good product.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  I love these, October 27, 2011
By baker177
OK, I have a pair of 100 dollar Santini Bibs and I actually like these better. I am 6'3" 175 lbs with a 31" waist and the mediums fit perfect. I know the chamois is pretty big, but it is really comfortable. You have to wear these about 3 times before they break in. If you are tall like me the straps will feel tight while you are standing but after 3 rides they will stretch. They are cheap, well made and I highly recommend them. I also have a pair of attack shorts and I do really like the chamois in those as well. I may try the attack bibs next. Pearl really makes good stuff!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Pearl Izumi Bib Short, October 15, 2011
By Hector
This is the first bib I owned and I feel i have been missing comfort and additional support. This product is very comfortable for the type of rides I do, 20 and 30 miles. I bought another one from another brand, but I am going back to Pearl Izumi for my next bib.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Bibs are the way to go!, September 18, 2011
By KYTrailRyder
My first pair of bibs, and if I recall correctly I paid around $40 for them. Very much worth it. Especially when most bibs of any quality are well over $100. The leg grippers are a little tight, but are getting better with every wear. If you are on the fence I would recommend bibs over regular shorts.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great shorts for the $$, August 26, 2011
By Scot Baldwin
These were the first bib shorts I had purchased. They were the best reviewed at the price point and with good reason. They are a great short!! I am in between the L and XL for sizing so I ordered the L (as an extra incentive to keep losing the weight) and they still fit well. Overall I am very happy with the shorts and the other Perl iZuMi products I have.
