Great versatile pedals, June 7, 2008
By Kim (Rochester, MN)
|
|
I chose these pedals because I could use them as clipless pedals with cycling shoes on one side and with my regular shoes on the other side. They are weighted so that they automatically spin to have the clip-in side up. If you are riding without your shoes, you just have to flip them. Since I most often ride with my cycling shoes I like it this way. They are adjustable so that you can make them easier or harder to clip into. I have never used clipless pedals before so I can't compare them to other types of clipless pedals, but I love the flexibility and quality of these and I love using the clipless pedals. They are great!

Versatile Pedal, November 16, 2008
By A Stone
|
|
I ride my bike almost every day. Some days just around my college campus. Other days I go out training for triathlons. These pedals fit this problem perfectly. One side is the standard platform, and on the other is the clip. The standard pedal side has a nice base with great traction. The clip side is easy to get into and get out of. Pedals are light weight and all metal. Great quality you would expect from Shimano. Well worth the price for the versatility.

Outstanding Pedals!, April 19, 2009
By Roger (Arlington, VA USA)

I just replaced the Candy pedals that came with my Giant OCR 3. The Candy pedals worked but with difficulty on occasion. These pedals are great - you can clip into them with ease - unlike the Candys. They have two sides, so you can use the non-clip side if you don't want to accidently clip in. You can adjust them, which cannot be done with the Candys. I am getting back into biking and am new to pedals with clips. These pedals are well made, well designed and work perfectly!

Nice, but..., July 16, 2010
By Joseph C. Daniel (Portland, OR)
|
|
I've owned these pedals for 1.5 months. They've been great: they're light, they look good and function quite well. The down side is that three or four weeks ago the right pedal started to "pop" on the down stroke. I'm assuming that the inner spindle has cracked and although it still functions fine, the noise is quite annoying. And as luck would have it, today, the left pedal started making the same noise. Fortunately, I bought them at REI so I can exchange the with no problem; something I will do tomorrow. I'm not sure if I'm going to try another pair; maybe the pair I have is defective. I think I might just go with the previous, heavier model to avoid any further hassle.

Very good pedal, excellent price, June 16, 2011
By A. Altman (Washington, DC)
|
|
I bought this from Amazon, having never purchased cycling gear from Amazon before, because Amazon had by far the best price on the product. The pedal is exactly as I expected based on reviews, for better and for worse. I'll go over the pros and cons.
Pros:
(1) Very inexpensive for the functionality you're getting - flat pedal for commuting or casual rides, SPD pedal for longer rides.
(2) Relatively light weight (380g on my scale), much lighter than most mountain bike-specific SPD pedals, which until recently were your only choice for a dual-sided pedal (for example, the Shimano PD-M324 Clipless/Clip Pedals).
(3) The pedals look very sleek.
(4) The bearings are much better than the inexpensive pedals I had been using before on my commuter. The "spinup", for lack of a better term, requires much less effort. This may be both a combination of weight (these are much lighter than many metal platform pedals), as well as the bearings.
Cons:
(1) The platform side is quite slick, as others have mentioned. I bought the pedals despite knowing this because my prior pedals, which were studded, were ruining the soles on my work shoes. These pedals will not damage shoes, but at the same time, offer little grip. That's not such a problem with sneakers that have grippy soles, but with flat-soled shoes, you really have to be careful about how much pressure you put on the pedal and can't easily stand up while pedaling. In addition to the slickness of the platform, the size of the platform also contributes, as it is much narrower than a standard flat pedal, so if you're not careful, your foot can slip off the edge, not just the front or back. This is a trade-off for a sleek-looking, functional SPD pedal.
(2) The clip-in side ships at a default tension that is far too tight, even for experienced riders. Anyone new to riding an SPD-style pedal should immediately adjust the tension to the opposite extreme to get a feel for using them. At default tension, they are uncomfortably hard to get out of (and I have 15 years of experience on Shimano's SPD pedals, dating back to the M535, released in 1995).
(3) I purchased the black pedals because they matched my black bike better, but as expected, the paint on the platform chips off easily. This is especially true when using it with SPD cleats, which can tear up the paint very quickly if you're using the platform side momentarily while riding.
Overall, I'm very satisfied with the pedals. They offer a lot of performance for the price. Just be aware of the slickness of the platform if you intend to ride with dress shoes, the problem with the default tension, and the issue with the black paint chipping.

Outstanding, June 5, 2011
By Squirrelman (OH, USA)

I bought these for my Spec FSR XC and paired it with Spec Sport Touring Shoes. This is my first set of clipless pedals+shoes despite being an avid cyclist - I generally knew what to expect before purchase. The units have performed well once everything is adjusted. I pulled 20%-35%+ more distance in the same amount of time with a clipless system than not - YMMV but I believe this is common.
The A530's come with cleats as most pedals do. SH51 cleats are included but this is not clearly noted on the item description. The included SH51 cleats work well but note that they only release with an outward heel movement (unlike SH56 cleats). You may want to pick up a set of SH56 cleats if you think the SH51's may be too restrictive. SH56 cleats have multiple release movements.
Installation was painless (remember, pedals unscrew towards the rear tire on *both* sides). The A530 installs with either a 5/8 wrench or an allen key wrench & don't forget to grease the threads a bit beforehand.
Float is easily adjusted with a small allen key screw and indicator markings.
I purchased the non-black units which are a textured unpolished/brushed aluminum and look great (even with some scratches/bumps).
06/21/11 Update: The pedals tend to "flip" predictably which is useful when you approach an intersection while clipped-in. That is the platform tends to switch to the clipless (and vice-versa) if you remove your foot briefly as you pedal. Minor but still useful - you can always flip the pedal with your toe.
I can confirm the platforms get pretty slippery when wet using slick soled/boat shoes. The platform side of the pedal has a very smooth finish and a lack of aggressive tread. This combination does not make nice with slick soles when wet.

First time clip pedal user...Made the right choice!, April 4, 2011
By SoCal73
|
|
Looked at many types of pedals that were dual platform. When initially looking at this pedal through amazon... I was unsure at first on the grip quality of the non-clip side. Found the same pedal at a local bike shop, but it was about $35 more for the set.
Placed the order and had the pedal set in my hand in less than a week.
(Note: the cleats do come with the pedals. It was not plainly listed if they are supplied)
I initially tried them on my bike road while on my trainer. Adjustments to the tension were quite easy. I have not yet found any drift in the tension over time.
I was satisfied during my first live ride. Easy in and out. The clipless side has very adequate grip.
I would buy these again and recommend to any first time clip-in riders.
Will probably buy another set for my mountain bike soon.

Pefect for technical MTB riding, October 7, 2010
By Mark
|
|
I had a problem with clipping in too easily while on very technical ascents on my MTB. These pedals solve the problem by providing one side without clips and a large, clipless platform on the other side to place your foot. They solved my problem perfectly! If you don't like to be clipped in all the time while mountain biking (either because you are riding super slow up technical ascents or to keep one foot unclipped yet have the safety of a large platform for fast descents) then these pedals are for you.

This is a great product, May 20, 2010
By trekkie (West Palm Bch, FL)

I just purchased a Trek hybrid that I use for family riding and exercise. I wanted a pedal that I could clip into sometimes for exercise, but gave me the option to ride as a regular pedal when I had my 3 year old on the back of my bike. This product really does work nicely for both.

Good pedals but not black!, March 23, 2010
By ukraine cyclist (L'viv, Ukraine)
|
|
The pedals are fine -- although I haven't tried them yet. The problem, though, is that BicycleSourceUS -- if you buy from them -- does not have black pedals. They will ship silver pedals to you. They told me -- when I called them -- that Shimano has discontinued the black pedals. So if you want black (as I did to match my bike), you have to make double sure that the sellers actually have black! Apart from the color, I can also mention that the grip on the street shoe side is not real good. You can find better grip on the Shimano PD-M324 SPD Dual Platform Pedal (Shimano PD-M324 SPD Dual Platform Pedal. But I like these better because of the looks....

Great commuter pedal, August 24, 2010
By P. Cody (Colorado Front Range)
|
|
I've put about 500 miles on these now with no issues. The dual use pedal is great for a commuter bike and the SPD clip is smooth in and out. It's sometimes bothersome to find the correct side of the pedal but a pedal with clips on both sides and platforms would be much heavier. The flat side isn't as jagged as a traditional platform and can be slippery when wet. This is the only downside to the design I have noticed so far. The flat is a little small too but this saves weight. For these reasons I wouldn't use the flat (sneakers) on mountain trails; I don't. Again, a great commuting / city pedal; I'm very happy with these.

good pedals once set to the correct tension, January 5, 2011
By CGW (California)
|
|
My wife and I did a lot of biking about 20 years ago but then got away from it. We recently started riding again (on old-people comfort bikes). Way back when, we wore bike shoes with cleats that clipped into Look pedals. They were not something you wanted to walk in. We were put on to SPD bike shoes and pedals by a local bike store. Hard to believe that there are bike shoes with clips that you can actually walk in. We bought shoes from the store, but I had done enough online research to know that the pedals were about half as expensive at Amazon as at the store. So I bought two sets of the Shimano pedals. I fortunately also bought the accompanying pedal wrench, about which I wrote a 5-star review.
Once installed and the tension adjusted, the pedals are terrific. One excellent feature is that they are neutrally balanced, so that neither the cleat nor clamp side prefers to point up.
But I have two complaints that kept me from giving them a 5-star rating. First, they came set with a very high release tension. In addition to making them hard to get out of, it was initially hard to get in to the pedals. I think that in terms of potential lost skin, starting too loose is preferable. The second complaint was that the Amazon page listed a pair of cleats first on the list of "customers who bought these also bought..." The pedals come with cleats, so there is no value in buying another set. We had a similar recent experience with a bluetooth phone gadget my wife bought for her car. The "customers who bought these also bought..." item in that case was a cigarette lighter charger. When the package arrived we found we had two of them. Amazon needs to pay more attention to prevent that from happening.

Great Pedals but..., October 19, 2010
By Daniel

These are really nice pedals..getting out is a breeze, getting in is a little harder as you have to get used to where the clips are on your shoe. My only complaint is that after ordering I asked Amazon whether or not the clips were included and I was told they were not. I spent an additional $20 ordering clips, and sure enough when I got the pedals there were clips included. Wasted of $20.

great versatility, June 9, 2010

I use these pedals for commuting, when exercising, and when doing errands. I use them with the Specialized Tahoe spd shoes, and with "normal" everyday shoes as well. They 're quite lightweight and very easy to install.
Going clipless has been the best upgrade ever and these pedals made the transition a lot easier!
I simply love them <3

Excellent first clip experience!, May 8, 2011
By Joe Electronics (Ohio USA)
|
|
As a first time clip user I wanted to retail the option of not clipping in and these fit the bill. Now that I've been riding with them for about 3 months I feel quite comfortable with the clips and love the extra power during climbs and sprints. And I still use the non-clip side from time to time when I just make a quick trip or I'm on a stretch of road where I'm stopping frequently and better off not clipping in for a while. They're light weight, solid, easily adjustable, and the price is right!
I removed a star only because the platform side could use a bit more grip. It's not at all slippery, but in wet conditions a little extra grip would be more assuring.

Excellent and innovative product, March 23, 2011
By Salmons (Corona, California USA)

Great quality, I put them on my road bike. They are not super light, nor any heavier than most road pedals. I ride anywhere from 20 to 60 miles a week. They're great when you want to take a quick ride and don't want to get all geared up or driving to a ride spot and realizing you forgot your bike shoes.
It's great to go the the library or a store and not have worry about sounding like you have tap shoes on as you walk across the floor.
I found them to be a great buy.

Versatile and works, November 19, 2010
By Roy Blakey
|
|
Clip-in pedals are great when you are pedaling at speed, but they are a pain around town where you are constantly having to stop at intersections and they require you to wear special shoes. These pedals allow you the option of using clips or not. They are well-constructed and work reasonably well as clip-in and clipless pedals. They are not really optimal for either but they are a good compromise. If you are new to clip-in pedals, I suggest that you adjust them initially to the minimal tension and practice getting in and out of them in a nice, safe area with maybe a soft surface to fall on.

Best of Both Worlds, April 19, 2010
By Marcus (Boise, ID)
|
|
You can have your cake and eat it too. You can ride with or without cycle shoes very comfortably. I ride 2.5 miles everyday to my campus and i mountain/road bike around with the same bike. I use street shoes to go to campus, and ride with my cycling shoes when riding for sport. These are lighter than my old stock pedals and they do more. One con is they have less grip on street shoes. Thats not to say my feet are flying off the pedals but if you wanted to ride aggressively on these without clipping in, you may notice. I only use street shoes when commuting so this is not a problem for me.
Shimano PD-M324 Clipless/Clip Pedals seem to have a better grip but at the cost of weight. For me, the lighter the better.

I've only done now about 40 miles on these pedals and haven't had the opportunity to use the SPD clips yet, but they offer a good upgrade over the stock pedals. They're built well if not a bit heavy and For the life of me couldn't see notations for right vs. left hand threading on them, but once on they work just as you would expect them to. The convenience of the dual sides is great as advertised.

Good Pedals, March 11, 2011
By Christian

The pedals are well built. I really like the quality of the pedals. When I bought the pedals I thought I would find great use for the flat platform on the other side. However, I never use it. Therefore, it would be best if I would have bought a pedal with clippers on both ends. I only road bike for training so I find no use for the other side and this is an issue in trying to find the clip after stopping at a light.

Are they clipless or not clipless?, July 28, 2011
By dragonfly (Ohio USA)
|
|
I've been using a bicycle pedal with metalic toe cages for 20+ years. I recently got a new pair of MTB bicycle shoes. They have a broader toe area and didn't fit easily into my cages. I noticed there was a recess on the bottom of my new shoes, so I could use a clipless pedal system. I've always avoided the clipless system because on my first experience using them I couldn't get my foot out fast enough upon coming to a stop and I fell over with me attached to the bike.I'm 6'4" so I fell a long way. Ouch!
I went to my local bike shop to see what might fit my shoes. Mountain bike shoes are a little diffferent than road shoes. Road shoes have 3 screws that attach the cleat to the shoe, whereas the MTB shoes have 2 screws. I like the MTB shoes because the cleats are recessed so you can walk normally when not on the bike. I looked at the Crank Bros pedals and the Shimano. The Shimano PD-A530 Dual Platform Bike Pedal system was what I picked. They are adjustable so you can get the right amount of tension of cleat to pedal. Turning your foot outward disengages your shoe from pedal.
One of neat features that caught my attention was dual purpose pedal. One side had the clipless system and the other side was a flat platform so you could use your street shoes if you wanted to just hop on for a quick ride.
After using the PD-A530 Dual Platform Bike Pedal for a month I noticed that I picked up about 2 mph speed with same cadence because of the positive attachment. Not having my feet squeezed into those cages anymore is a treat. My feet don't hurt after a long ride.
I ended up buying them through Amazon because their price was the best. I highly recommend this product.

Works as advertised, July 27, 2011
By Shailesh

Never used these type of pedals before, the first day I made my 11 mile commute to work 3 minutes faster. I like the fact that you can adjust the pressure to clip in and out. I set mine to the lowest setting, due to a few sections with a lot of stop and go riding. The dual pedal comes in handy when approaching a busy intersection. Only complaint I have is that the dual side with out the clip could have had a bigger or rubberized traction or something more like a regular wellgo plastic pedal. This would help when riding with tennis shoes. Over all worth the money.

Great Pedal, July 12, 2011
By OneGriggAByte
|
|
I purchased these pedals to go on my new Scott S20. One of the reasons I decided to go this this model is that I am brand new to cleats and I wanted the ability to use them as platform pedals as well. They have been on the bike for about 3 months now and I still love them. I am a big guy ( 6'1 250bs ) and the pedals haven't had any issues.
Only thing I guess I could complain about:
- I guess the only thing that I have noticed is that if you unclip during a ride and then use the platform side you wind up putting some wear on the center of the platform. Nothing that effects the pedal, but some pretty deep scratches.
- Platform is a bit slippery with the wrong shoes.

Glad I bought them!, July 5, 2011
By Don

I was attracted to the idea of a dual platform pedal, so I bought these pedals. Having ridden with them several times now, I can say that I'm very glad I bought them. I'm new to riding "clipless" but happily I've had no trouble adjusting to it with these pedals. (Note: The instructions rightly advise practicing clipping in and out before an actual ride.) These pedals provide the versatility I need. If the conditions are congested or I'm stopping and starting a lot, I will use the platform side of the pedals. If I'm riding for fairly long stretches where the chances of a collision are small, I'll use the clip (SPD) side of the pedals to gain the extra efficiency being clipped in provides. I'm very pleased with these Shimano PD-A530 pedals and recommend them highly.

Good Pedals, so far, June 18, 2011
By joyous
|
|
Haven't had these pedals for very long, yet, but I like them thus far (I will try to update this once I've used them for a bit longer). The pedals are not too heavy, but seem reasonably sturdy. One word of caution: The pedals may come with the clips on their TIGHTEST setting (mine had one pedal at tightest, the other loosest). I only checked one (of course, the loose one), so I thought both were loose, clipped in, and ended up stuck. It's possible to unclip from the tightest setting, but rather difficult. Moral--make sure BOTH pedals are loose!
Also, Amazon's price is the best I've seen so far!

I really like these pedals. I screwed them into my old Peugeot clicked into them and took off for a nice ride. I like the way they are balanced so that one side doesnt gain upward facing status over the other.
I think I should have bought simply double sided spd clickers but i was concerned with riding the bike with normal shoes.Still cant make up my mind on that.

I received these pedals in a timely fashion new in the box. They are not a light pedal or for racing, but work very well for touring, trails, and commuting. Riding in city traffic the dual sided feature turns it into a platform; very handy. The tension is adjustable so unclipping can be done virtually without any effort. They have a wide base and support out of saddle riding as well as stomping on them for hard efforts. The excellent support ensures that 'hot foot' is a thing of the past. For just about any terrain or type of riding these pedals are hard to top. I highly recommend them.

Great pedals, great price, May 22, 2011
By Jonathan Woodman (Anchorage, Alaska)
|

Love these pedals. Really good for bike commuting through somewhat urban areas. When I'm on bike trails, and I am not stopping much, I clip in. When I am on the streets in stop and go traffic, I flip the pedals over to the platform sides. Plus you can hop on your bike for a quick ride any time with regular shoes on.

Ok Pedals, May 22, 2011
By Joey F (New York)
|
|
Pedals are good clipping in and out. One drawback I found is when going to clip in, pedals would be on flat side and you have to spend the time to turn them. Not the best situation on a hill or something along those lines. Have only had them for 3 months and I have moved on to different pedals.

Heavy but functional, May 20, 2011
By L. Lind
|
|
I was hesitant to try these pedals given their weight--at 384 g, they are far heavier than my old Look pedals. However, for commuting, I wanted a pedal that was easy to clip in/out of, and that I could ride on without my bike shoes on occasion. These fit the bill. Just make sure you loosen the tension on them when you first install them, as they come set at their highest tension, which is almost impossible to clip in/out of.

Clipless Pedals, May 16, 2011
By Drew M. (Fresno, CA)
|
|
Got these for my new MTB, being a road rider I know about clips but wasn't sure if I would want them for the trails. My first ride on the bike I didn't have these on and almost crashed becuase I wasn't cliped in, going through a rut my foot bounced off which put me off balance and didn't allow me to power through.
Added these to the bike the next ride and I had a zero learning curve, clip in just as easy as my Candys on the CX bike and almost as easy as my SPD-SL's on my road bike. I have them set at the lightes settings and my feet have yet come out of the clips, unless I want them to.
The non clip side is to smooth and thus feet do not stay put, I might need really gummy shoes. I wanted the second side so I could just hop on the bike wihtout needing to get my MTB shoes on. They work fine for neighborhood rides, but forget about using them on the trails.

Well made pedals, May 10, 2011
By Alexander Boxerbaum (Chicago, IL USA)
|
|
These pedals are a good choice if most of your riding will be clipped in. Using that side of the pedal, I feel like I have a nice solid connection to the bike, way better than the cages I was used to. Getting out is easy enough with a twist of the ankle. The tension adjust is also a nice feature.
The non-clip side works alright, but the surface is not grippy, so you can't pedal fast or hard if you aren't clipped in.

Amazon purchase of Shimano PD-A530 Dual Platform Pedal, April 26, 2011
By steve ellison (WEST PALM BEACH, FLORIDA, US)
|
|
Searched for weeks on several sites untill I found these pedals on Amazon for a great price + FREE SHIPPING! YES!!!
As a Touring, Long-Distance Cyclist I really found the Shimano PD-A530 pedals with their versatile platform/clip just right for me. Yes... a tad on the heavy side but a small price to pay for the added option. Plus, I was searching for Quality and Versatility and the Best Price I could find for NEW Pedals. The Quality is standard Shimano... topnotch!
Even when wearing my cycling shoes I have been known to un-clip one foot and flip over to the platform while in heavy trafficked or metro areas - sounds crazy but has saved me a fall or too.

Versatile and easy to clip in and out of, April 24, 2011
By Alex (New Jersey, USA)
|
|
It wasn't until a couple of years ago that I took up riding and was happy with my 7.5 FX with its stock conventional pedals. But everyone suggested I upgrade to SPDs. Apprehensive about committing to only clipless pedals, I opted for these at the suggestion of a local bike shop and couldn't be happier. Getting the clipless side up to clip into is a smooth operation and clipping out is child's play. In fact, I've hardly ever used regular shoes since transition to these but it's nice to know that, should I need to, I can always do that. These are great for anyone with a fast hybrid or fitness bike who wants the versatility of using comfortable walking shoes when commuting with it or clipless shoes when riding for fitness. Best of both worlds.

Nice pedals, March 9, 2011
By Richard (VA United States)
|

I've switched from SPD-SL (road) shoes to these because I'm spending less time on long cruising rides and plan on doing some cycle touring.
These are great commuter/touring shoes: you don't have to clip in every time, and when you do the pedals click in far more easily than my SPD-SLs.
The only downside is that these are heavy...but if you're a weight weenie you're probably not looking at these pedals anyway!

Exactly what I hoped for and more, February 14, 2011
By Sereana Bird
|
|
I needed clipless pedals for my road bike but because I also use it for commuting, didn't want to be limited to having to wear cycling shoes all the time. This pedal has the best of both worlds...SPD clip on one side, pedaling platform on the other.
They were extremely easy to install and had them on the bike in about 5 minutes.
They look good and are very easy to use. Worth every penny, but because they're so affordable, you're not spending TOO many pennies!
The only downsides (if they really are even downsides) is that the pedal is heavier than an SPD clipless alone would be, and the pedal platform is a little "slippery", so don't expect to do aggressive riding if you're just wearing normal shoes. But for hopping on the bike and pedaling down to the store, they're fine.
I would recommend these pedals to anyone. Durable, look good, and they do the job.

Great Commuter Pedals, January 3, 2011
By gat0r
|
|
These are an excellent set of clipless pedals for my daily commute. They allow me to use SPD cleats on the ride to work, yet they have the flexibility to use the platform side of the pedal with my regular shoes when I need to hop on for a short-distance ride. I have the tension on the lowest setting, and have not had any accidental un-clipping incidents (using the single-direction SH51 cleats). The price here at Amazon was nearly half of what I was finding at retail stores, so I couldn't pass these up.

Very good, but could use improvements., December 28, 2010
By L. Miller (NYC, USA)
|

I bought these as a hybrid pedal so I can commute to work and go on long rides for fun. The clip/cleat works as well as any Shimano pedal. Nothing new to report. I chose these for my second bike as a less expensive option. I use Time Attack Z mountain bike pedals on my other bike and I have to admit in city traffic the Shimano ia a better choice. You can adjust the spring tension easily so you can change the ease at which you release from the pedal. Its a good entry level pedal in this regard. They are super easy to get out of and when in traffic you use the platform side and the cleat does not get in the way, if you are wearing your riding shoes.
The down side of this pedal is the platform side. On standard platform pedals or MTB pedals with the set screws a pair of soccer sneaks or flat bottom shoes works well. Not on this pedal. It is slippery, running sneakers have the best grip. If Shimano could add the set screw grip or some better teeth to the pedal this would be perfect. There is the other option I think the 324 dual function pedal but I like this because it has a wider foot bed like a Mountain bike pedal. However for a 5 mile ride there really isn't much to complain about. If the knew the pedals were solid aluminum, I would have my friends in a machine shop drill holes and thread my own set screws in.
I do feel some clicking on one pedal on the down stroke I am not sure if this is the same spindle problem I have read about with this pedal, it could be the cleat locating inside the pedal, I have the tension loose because I use these in china and when riding its a combo city/country and I want to get out easily because the stereotype about Chinese drivers is more true.
This being said, I am probably giving my Time pedals to my brother and getting another pair of these for my NYC bike. Its a great city pedal and gives you options.

Great dual purpose pedals, November 17, 2010
By The Fletch (Laguna Hills, CA USA)
|
|
These pedals were designed to be used with either clip-in shoes or regular street shoes and they work well with both. The pro shop didn't recommend these based on their vast experience with more serious riders. Although now that I've gotten used to clip-on's I doubt that I'll use street shoes very often I still might when riding a short bit to the tennis courts, for instance.
They do all they are meant to do and I'm very happy with them.

Nothing but "Net", September 29, 2010
By Esipress (Chandler, AZ USA)
|
|
These are a great product. I combined them with a pair of Shimano MTB SPD shoes and have increased my speed by 20% and endurance by at least the same amount. I ride a Schwinn Hybred, not the speediest cycle in town but I'm doing 30 and 40 mile rides with much greater ease. I know these are classified as mtb but they work great for street and light trail especially if your not quite ready to step into the Lance Armstrong type of biking that takes a whole different direction.
I found that they took very little time to get used to, just make sure you decide before you step off, if your going to do a one foot landing or two, because if it's two, it's hard to do if you still have one foot clamped in the pedal. The adjustments are a cinch and the quality of the product is first rate.
I was told by a avid cyclist that you will never regret getting clamp pedals, and you will only regret not getting them sooner.

Great for the Spontaneous Rider, September 8, 2010
By Duran A. Valdez (Fontana, CA)
|
|
PROS:
Lightweight
Easy to use with regular shoes or sandals
Still useable with biking shoes
Great to have when you just want to jump on the bike quickly and run an errand
I use the platforms when I take my dogs for bike rides--don't want to be clipped in if they see a cat!
CONS:
IF you're not paying attention you can confuse which side your feet are on and lose your balance
When you're going for a hardcore ride you can't clip in from either side of the pedal
OVERALL:
I love 'em--perfect for those of you who don't want to spend 20 minutes getting ready to ride but just want to jump on the bike and go.

I bought these last month for my wife's Gary Fisher 2009 road bike. They are fantastic pedals and allow her to ride without bike shoes if its around our community and when she buys new shoes she can add the clips and ride professionally. Ours came in black and they look gret with her mint green bike. All and all I am very satisfied with this product, the shipper, and the overall value since I wasn't charged for S&H or tax.

Perfect For My Needs, August 29, 2011
By Golden Tamaraw (Thorndale, PA)
|
|
I decided to purchase the Shimano PD-A530 pedals after considering other SPD models both from Shimano and its competitors. I wanted a set of pedals for my newly-bought road bike that would perfectly serve my needs and my riding style. My criteria were: Affordable price, sturdy and looks reliable, will allow me to clip on when I'm on my serious rides but still able to use my bike if I'm just out cruising in my neighborhood or on multi-purpose trails with my family without having to wear my cleats, and would complement my road bike. This Shimano model is just about perfect for my requirements. After more than 300 miles on the saddle, I could say with confidence that this is a solid performer. I have no problems with my pedal strokes, am able to climb stronger, my knees don't hurt and always gives that reassuring click sound letting me know that I've successfully clipped my feet. The only issue that still lingers is that even after 5 weeks and more than 2 dozen rides, it still takes me a little bit more of an effort to un-clip my feet despite dialing in the lowest cleat tension allowed by the pedal. At first it can be a bit nerve-wracking as I scrambled to break my feet loose or else suffer a nasty spill, but I've learned to polish my anticipation skills even further as to when to un-clip and which foot first.
This is highly recommended for avid cyclists who are not yet into the other serious clip types, are on a budget, and simply want to use their bike for a leisurely ride in between their more serious stuff.

Good on both sides, August 22, 2011
By MobyBike (Oregon USA)
|
|
I like these so much I got a second pair a few days later. The clip side works great just like you expect a Shimano SPD to work, but the angle of the platform is just right too! The platform isn't so wide that the pedal strikes the ground on sharper leans into corners on the road like all the other platform pedals do that I have. The black paint does wear off some. These pedals are top of class for me no matter which side I am using, no compromise for me these are the best of both on my city and utility bikes.

This was my first clip on pedal, I wanted to learn on pedals that has a fail safe, in case I was riding and I miss my clip in, I can continue pedaling. Needless to say, I rarely use the platform side now, I have learned to use the clip on well. The pedal always goes on the correct side when clipping in. Amazing pedals for beginners and seasoned riders.

High Quality Pedals As Expected, October 26, 2011
By Brad J. Rawlins
|
|
I purchased the silver version of these pedals since other reviewers said the black paint tends to scratch off. So far I love the pedals. The dimensions are great, as the pedals have a large surface area, but are not too wide which can inhibit sharp turns. I haven't found them to be slippery at all, but haven't used them much in wet weather either. I have only used them without the clips so far, but plan to purchase shoes sometime in the future to use that way. If you step on the "wrong" side of the pedal it very predictably flips back to the preferred side. You can't beat amazon's price for these, so I highly recommend you purchase them here.

Great dual pedal!, October 18, 2011
By jro806 (Colorado)
|
|
I have a hybrid bike which I use for everything- 30 mile exercise rides and to get around town. I was worried at first about the lack of grip on the platform side, but in regular shoes- this isn't a problem. When wearing SPD shoes, the clips make the shoe a little slippery on the platform side if you switch from the clip in side. Also, I have the pedals in black, and the clips on my shoes scratched up the black on the pedals the first time I rode with them. They still look okay, and I don't mind, really. I love these pedals!

Shimano A-530 SPD Dual Pedal, October 7, 2011
By Ross Damrow
|
|
I looked at many types of SPD pedals for my mountain bike. These give me the advantage of clipping in if I'm serious, or jumping on with tennis shoes if I just want to go joy riding. The platform is large enough to give you a good base and power to push off if you don't clip in. Clipless shoes can still be used on the flat side if needed, but I've found them to be a little slippery making one less aggressive. They are easy to orient for either clipping in or riding flat. Eventhough they might be a little heavier, good luck telling the difference. If you can, consider it a benefit to your workout!

Perfect pedal for a mixed use lifestyle, October 2, 2011
By G. Amato
|
|
I just bought a Trek 1.5 road bike for exercise and long rides. I'm still a novice so I can't comment on all the weight and SPD performance. If you are really concerned about 50 extra grams then these probably aren't for you anyways. For me, they are the perfect pedal for my mixed use lifestyle. 90% of the time I'm using the SPD side for real riding and they have worked exceptionally well. 10% of the time I wear street shoes to ride to the parks downtown, a friends house, or a local pub. I also like using the SPD since I can wear my same shoes to the gym for spin class.
If I start to get serious about riding I'll definitely switch these out for lighter pedals and buy a cheap bike for casual riding.
P.s. As other reviewers mentioned, make sure to adjust these out of the box. The default tension that is shipped is way to tight.

Great and versatile, September 27, 2011
By Ryan (Clovis, California United States)
|
|
These have turned out to be pretty good pedals. They are easy to lock into and my feet have never accidently come out. I use these on my road and mountain bike with the same spd shoes. They are very durable and made entirely of metal. This does cause them to be a little heavy though. When you unhook and want to hook back in, the clips usually arn't on top which can be an inconvenience. The platform side is pretty nice. It is completely flat and large enough to feel like you are riding on a normal platform pedal. One issue I have with the platform side is that there is basically no grip at all. So, I am taking off 1 star because of how slippery the platform is and the weight of the pedals. I would definitely buy them again though. They are a very high quality pedal and that is why I chose them for 2 of my bikes.

Versatile, as advertised!, September 8, 2011
By MrChops

I like these pedals a lot, you can do it all with them. They're a little heavy so maybe not the best for extremely serious cyclers, I doubt a serious cyclist would be looking into these any how. Either way, I like them. However when wearing clipless shoes it becomes a little tricky to get clipped in because you have to flip the pedal up right and get your foot in there right. It's just a slight draw back on these and I would still strongly recommend them because they work great!

Don't release like earlier SPD pedals., September 3, 2011
By Michael R. Pearlman
|
|
I've used SPD pedals for 20 years. Have 8-9 pairs. This pair will not release without a great deal more effort that all the others. I don't like that one bit. They are OK but just. The other SPD pedals could be screwed so loose they would come apart. That may be why Shimano went in this direction as someone may have screwed them so loose they fell apart in use, they crashed and now they cannot be made that loose anymore.
