4.0 out of 5 stars.  Tips for Mac users, October 30, 2010
By Bo Struye (L.A., CA USA)
Everything seems to be cool except that, as a Mac user, I had a hiccup while trying to reformat the drive as Mac Journaled instead of PC.

I tried to use Disk Utility but it kept giving an error similar to ""File formatter failed"". After doing some research on the net I found the solution in an Apple bulletin. Here is the way to do it:

*****************************

Open Disk Utility (located in Applications/Utilities)
Choose the drive with the issue from the left side of the Disk Utility window.
Choose Get Info from the File menu.
Note the information listed under ""Disk Identifier"".
Close the Information window and quit Disk Utility
Open Terminal (located in Applications/Utilities).
Type:

diskutil partitiondisk [DiskIdentifier] JHFS+ newdisk 100%

Note: Replace ""[DiskIdentifier]"" with the information gathered in step 4.
Press Return.
Wait for the command to complete, then quit Terminal.
You should now be able to use Disk Utility with the disk.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Works as Designed, November 2, 2010
By Octopus (Wisconsin)
Have been a long time user of WD drives. I have always been impressed with the quality and life span.

I brought two of these as a external backup location for our company. I backup up roughly 550-650GB of data to these drives daily. So far- past month- they have worked as expected. The backup job writes over information. Backup takes about 7-8 hours.

The drive itself is small and easy to take with you.

HDD may make noise. It is our server room...

The LED indicator light is limited. One LED in the back of the unit identifies all 'statuses'. The light is solid if the drive is powered. The same LED flashes if data is being read/written to the drive. An LED indicating power and activity would be nice in the front of the unit- WD. Most users don't look at the back of the drive.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Beware, November 2, 2010
By Elderly Person (Los Gatos, CA)
I purchased three WD 1.5 TB Element drives. Two from dentalBookshop. The first failed after a month after transferring considerable data to the drive. 2nd drive failed after two weeks again after transferring lots of data. The 3rd drive I returned unopened to dentalBookshop for a full refund. These are the only hard drive failures I've experienced in 30 years of computer experience. Maybe I've been lucky. I just purchased a Samsung 1.5 TB internal drive (5400 rpm) and am hoping for better luck.
