3.0 out of 5 stars.  It works well, but must be washed frequently., February 14, 2010
By Michael Mikulaninec (Orlando, Florida USA)
Why listen to me? I carry two 64oz KKanteens of water into work with me every day, and switch this top between them as they are being consumed throughout the work day. I've owned this product for about a month now and use it 6 days a week.

It consists of two pieces: the base, and a disk shaped cover that inserts at the top that turns 90 degrees to either expose a drinking port, or obscure it. This is NOT spill-proof. If the container tips, fluid will spill out.

Drinking without spilling any on you is easy if you use the right techinique. No need to elaborate it here... try it with water first and you'll get it right after a few tries.

It works, BUT: There is a problem with this design. The rotating disk insert traps fluid between it and the base beneath it. If you do not frequently wash these parts with soap and water AND pop off the top so the area between them can dry, it will get a fetid smell to it as bacteria grows. The disk is not designed to be regularly removed from the base; I have to squeeze the plastic insert that holds it on and pop the thing off. I have a feeling that eventually, the part that holds the rotating disk on is going to break from doing this. I have no other choice though as it cannot dry out without being seperated. Once it does break it can still be used as a sipping lid with a hole that cant be closed.

This cap is easier to drink out of by far than having to remove and reattach the screw on lid the containers ship with but it could definitely be improved. I will be looking for another sippy-cup type lid for my Kleen Kanteens, but it wont be one of these the second time around.

Conclusion: Better than nothing but needs improvement.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  It's a great solution to a great kanteen., December 19, 2009
By linnefaulk (Wesley Chapel, FL United States)
I just got my Klean Kanteen Wide Mouth Insulation Thermos and I ordered the Café Cap at the same time. I am so glad I did. I love the Klean Kanteens but didn't like unscrewing and screwing every time I wanted a drink. This lets you drink hot or cold beverages at home, work or on the go.

One caveat, it is not leak proof and it not spill proof. I found that out yesterday when I moved my arm too quickly and found it covered with hot tea.

I also wish you could open and shut it with one hand but it's not enough to make me change thermoses.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Does NOT have a stainless steel interior... BUMMER., February 4, 2010
By nonenone (boise, idaho)
I carefully shopped around for a stainless water bottle with as little plastic as possible. I was totally sold on this cafe cap due to the description, which says "Stainless steel interior, polypro exterior allows a 100% stainless steel interior" but unfortunately in reality the entire lid is plastic. Big bummer.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Cap is crap!, March 19, 2010
By A. Lee (East Side)
I got the insulated Klean Kanteen and it works great! It is one of the best double walled travel mugs available because it can retain the heat of your drink for hours! So i figured i get this cap to go along with it.

The problem is, I was EXTREMELY disappointed with this product. Not only does it leak like crazy but it is made of cheap plastic that is already worn out from use. (I've only had it for a couple of months) I can't understand how Klean Kanteen can put out such a good product like the insulated mug but then sell a really sad excuse of a cap at an extra cost! Trust me. Don't buy this cap. Wait for Klean Kanteen to make a better one or go with a Thermos. Most of their stuff is leak proof and heat retention is just as good. And at least they don't charge you extra for an inferior cap!

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Bad cap, December 28, 2009
By R. Grant
I love the Klean Kanteen insulated bottle, but this is a terrible cap. As the first reviewer noted, it's not leakproof at all. It's safe for the morning commute--Klean Kanteen artfully calls it "splashproof" on the company website--but for anything more arduous than taking potholes in the cupholder, the cap WILL spill. Stick with the regular cap until the company improves upon this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  This is a perfect 5 star coffee cap for a five star thermos, March 22, 2011
By JLDET5
This cap turns a 12oz insulated Kanteen into the perfect commuter / office mug. The cap has a seal where it twists on to the Kanteen so no leaks there. It has a simple rotating disk to close and open. The disk is designed to easily separate by squeezing the inside steam for a quick rinse. It takes just a few seconds to rinse.

This cap is not designed to be perfectly sealed when sideways or upside down but it does hold the contents with minimal dribble. It is not designed to be put in a back pack.

For drinking hot coffee the lid is perfect as it has a pretty good lip on it that is contoured where the opening is. You want this style or else a burned lip is in your future! For a hot beverage, this could not be better and there is no after taste of plastic.

I have a home latte machine and I froth the milk right there in the Kanteen and top off with the cap.

At the office, a quick rinse, and it holds filtered water the rest of the day. It's now my favorite!

As a comparison, I have another style insulated steel mug with a complicated lid that seals solid. Guess what. Burned myself the first time, the cleaning was tedious, and I always had a bad after taste from the lid.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Pretty awesome, September 29, 2010
By Annette (Washington, DC)
Now that I have this, I don't know why I used the screw on top for so long. This is SO much more convenient if you don't have a need to open an close your bottle all day. I work in an office, so I prefer to leave it open, but didn't feel safe when it was just the screw on cap (I was afraid of spilling). This is WAY better because I can only spill a little at a time :)

I know the cap is not leak-proof, but I would have liked it to be.

Also, my water tasted plastic-y the first day, but then that went away.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Very Convient, April 21, 2010
By donnyjoe (Woodinville, Washington United States)
The wide mouth cafe cap works just as described. It is not water tight, but if closed and your bottle tips over, only a few drops will be lost. Together with the insulated wide mouth Klean Kanteen the insulated bottle will keep a drink cold for 24 hours.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  so so, April 7, 2010
By Rocco Capra
I got this for my 20oz. Insulated Kleen Kanteen. it is a little hard/weird to drink from so I end up pouring my coffee into a mug. I am not sure if it is the lid or the fact I have the largest kanteen they make. Plus, the kanteen does such a great job of keeping the coffee hot that it burns like hell to drink from it, which is another reason to pour it into a mug.

The lid seems to be decent quality, it's just a lid for pete's sake.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Like This Feature, May 16, 2011
By Joanne (Laguna Hills, CA, US)
I bought the wide mouth Kanteen because of the cafe cap, which I purchased separately. I am very pleased with both the Kanteen and the cap. Remember, though, to remove the closure part of the lid and wash the pieces separately. It comes off and goes back on easily.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good, but does leak a little., November 2, 2010
By Chicago Shopper (Chicago, IL)
I would get this again, because it's the only option for the Kleen Kanteen insulated bottle. As long as you know it leaks, and expect it, it's a good product. The seal (where you screw it in) definitely doesn't leak.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Very good but could be better, May 21, 2010
By LGM (New York, NY United States)
I have Klean Kanteen's 16-ounce insulated bottle so I bought this cap to go with it. It's very convenient and it's the cap I use all the time while at home or at the office. I find it indispensable.

But because the cafe cap is not leakproof, when I carry the bottle outside I have to put back the original cap that came with it. Because of this, I only gave it four stars. I know it's possible to make a cafe-style cap that is leakproof because an inexpensive plastic water bottle I bought at the drugstore a few weeks ago has one. A hinged tab on the cap lifts up to take a sip and snaps back down. There is a gasket on the underside of the tab that makes it waterproof. So it can be done.

As for cleaning the cafe cap, it's a little inconvenient but it's pretty easy to pop off the rotating disk that covers the drinking hole. From the underside/inside of the cap, just squeeze the little post in the center while simultaneously pushing it out. The disk slides out so you clean it.

So while not perfect, it's still a pretty handy cap to have and I use it all the time. I would not hesitate to buy it again. But I sure wish Klean Kanteen would design another cap for the bottle that is both leakproof and easy to drink from.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Simple and easy to use, May 19, 2010
By Tall66 (Seattle)
This cap does just what it says it will do, and does it well. Simple to use, twists shut with a snap and is easy and comfortable to drink out of. As stated in the product listing, this is not an air tight cap so it will leak out if tipped upside down, but that is true for all Cafe caps.

It's a pity that I have to give this item a bad review, but this cap leaks. I bought it to the Klean Kanteen insultaed water bottle, that is great, and, unfortunaterly, the cap is really bad, made a mess in my daughter's bagpack.

It is splash proof but not leak proof. When you are carrying it, it is not going to slosh onto you, but if it tips over onto your car seat it will begin to spill. Other than that it is fine.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent cap for it's purpose, November 26, 2011
By starrynite101 (Virginia)
The cap is made out of a BPA free plastic that does not affect the taste of what you are drinking. It is a cafe cap.. meaning a cap to mostly drink out of. It does not leak at all during normal use. It will leak slowly however if you have a sipping cap on it and hold it upside down. It's a sipping cap. I use it in my office and taking drinks too and from work in my car's cup holder or my hand or sitting upright in a bag. It works perfectly for all of these uses.

To clean it normally you can just rinse it out with warm soapy water or put it in the dishwasher. To give it a good spring cleaning you pop the top bit off of the other bit and wash them separately. They are designed to easily come apart and be put back together. I have had it two years now and was very satisfied with it. Apparently someone else was too because my klean kanteen was stolen at work, which is why I came here to immediately replace it.

I've been very pleased with this cap. I've had no leaks, and I LOVE that the interior is stainless steel. I do wish the top moving part was removable for cleaning, but I'm sure there is a good reason it does not. Definitely recommend this cap.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Real Leaky, January 7, 2011
By deadsweater (Philadelphia)
Drinking out of this cap is like using a dribble cup. Liquid often gets trapped in the threads and under the 2 piece cap that closes and opens the drinking hole, just waiting to spill on you when you take a sip from it. Klean Kanteen makes a great insulated container to go with it, but they got to put more money into their lid designs.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great lid for the car with a double-walled Klean Kanteen, July 15, 2011
By A. Doss (Los Angeles)
The problem with buying coffee at your favorite coffee shop, is that I inevitably burn my hands while trying to carry it to the car. There, I inevitably spill as I go over bumps or, worse, put my finger over the whole on the lid and burn my fingers. I've tried using those insulated paper waffle covers, even wrapping numerous napkins around it...but it's so wasteful. Then, when I get home, my coffee is too cold. I maybe try to microwave it, but, sometimes the cups can "melt" at the seams. Clearly, I needed a new solution.

So, I bought the double-walled / insulated stainless Klean Kanteens. First, no more burning hands while holding it. That's fantastic. But the lid they come with, while virtually spill proof, isn't really conducive to one handed opening/sipping in the car...that's where this lid comes in! While you can't invert the kanteen with this lid on (it'll leak), it does a better job than my "finger over the whole" of the plastic lids on the paper cups (and I definitely don't recommend inverting the paper cups with the plastic lids!!!)

Lastly, the insulated Kanteen keeps my coffee hot for hours. So much so, I have to add ice to get it to a cooler drinking temperature as it won't cool off!

For the car, this lid is perfect....minimizes "speed bump" spills. Allows for easy one-handed operation. A perfect "green" solution for the car. So long disposable cups that burn my hands, leak, and disintegrate upon reheat...hello Klean Kanteen!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  The cap is great for in the office, May 12, 2011
By Kiya Mia (Florida)
I use this in the office to drink out of my 60-oz wide mouth and it works better than having to unscrew the squeaky top all the time. I've had times when I've accidentally left this on the kanteen and thrown it in my bag. It leaks! A lot! I've soaked my laptop a couple of times with it. Now I've learned to only use it in the office, or finish my water before leaving.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Perfect!, January 26, 2011
By Claire Burke
I love this cap, but I didn't need it to be leak-proof as others did.

It is easy to drink out of and more importantly: you can clean it. All the other lids that I had (except for the KK Sports cap, which to date I've had good luck with) developed mold as they were impossible to clean. The swivel mechanism pops right off for easy, thorough cleaning and pops right back on. Genius!!

They should have made more of an effort to inform everyone that its not leak-proof, but for those of us that keep our drinks upright, this puppy is ideal.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Conversion Top, September 29, 2010
By Miss C.
This top fits perfectly on my wide-mouth insulated Klean Kanteen, making my once water-bottle into a travel mug! It makes sipping my water, coffee, and other beverages so much easier! I was getting tired of the twist-off tops and wanted something a bit more accessible. However, this top, unlike the twist-off ones that come with the Kanteens, leaks at the spout. It's not surprising, I have never found a coffee top that is 100% leak-proof. So, if you're just walking with your beverage in your hand and are not anticipating sloshing around your Kanteen, use this top. But if you are planning on hiking or walking, and need to put your Kanteen in a bag or somewhere it may get knocked over, use the twist-off top instead. Both are very valuable to have around, though.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  I love this cap, July 25, 2010

I have zero problems with this cap.

No leaking, no stinking, no nothing.

I LOVE it.

I hate unscrewing caps all day and this cap is the perfect solution for your Klean Kanteen bottle if you want easy access to your drink.

Of course, I keep my bottle upright! Best way to keep liquids from spilling out of your bottle.

I use it with the 20 oz insulated and I couldn't be happier with this combination.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  It Leaks!!!!, October 15, 2010

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great cap when used for what it is designed for, September 1, 2011
By Mark (Buffalo, NY USA)
This cap is a great addition to the Klean Kanteen bottles. I have several Klean Kanteen bottles, both insulated and non-insulated. You just need to understand that this cap is not meant to be a leak proof cap. (The packaging clearly states this, as does the Klean Kanteen website.) It's a spill resistant cap. So no, you can't throw your bottle in your backpack with this cap on it. But at the same time, you do no have to unscrew the cap when you want to take a drink. The cap is meant to be used when using your bottle at a desk/table, or when sitting at home, etc. Yes, it would be nice if Klean Kanteen also made a cap that met in the middle. A cap that was leak proof, but quick and easy to drink from. Like the sports cap they have for the classic bottles. Personally I hate sport caps, so I'm glad to have this cap as an option. And when used for for what it is designed for, it is a great cap. Just set your expectations correctly, and you will be pleased.

One reviewer saw the cleaning of this cap as a negative. I see it as a HUGE positive. You can quickly and easily pop it apart and clean it *thoroughly*. (And it is dishwasher safe.) The caps I've had in the past on all the different coffee tumblers and water bottles I have tried (and there have been many) had one or more places that were impossible to clean. Either a rubber gasket or some other spin top that you could not get under. I drink chai lattes. I hate to think of the bacteria that was able to grow in those nooks and crannies that I could not get into to wash all the milk out of. After I broke a ceramic tumbler I had from a certain ubiquitous coffee place, I ripped the gasket out of the cap out of curiosity... the gunk I saw in there made my stomach turn to think I had been drinking from that cup. I think the reviewer that commented on the cap getting dirty between the two parts simply miss the point that that happens on ALL coffee type caps of this type. But with most, you can't take them apart and see the dirt, let alone clean it. So being out of sight, people do not realize the dirt that is there.

Overall, this is a 4.9 star cap. I do wish the opening was a touch bigger so I could "guzzle" water from it when I want. With it's current design, I can only drink at a moderate rate. But I have found that the case with all cups/caps I have tried. (I think they are designed that way to prevent people from spilling on themselves if they tip the cup/bottle at too great an angle.) So when I want to do such, I simply take the cap off and guzzle away :)

One other comment... some reviewers have asked a question along the line of "why don't they add a gasket to make it leak proof." I think the reason Klean Kateen does not make a leak proof cap like such as that is that they would need to use rubber (or such) in the gasket. The company is very much about using materials that are food safe. Also, those gaskets deteriorate over time and start to "flake". Then those small pieces get into your beverage. Based on marketing material on their website, I think Klean Kateen is all about safe, durable, and sustainable products & materials. And the material used for gaskets do not live up to that philosophy. I agree a leak proof cafe cap would be nice. But I would not one that has any questionable materials. So I'm willing to live with the minor inconvenience of switching caps.

The original cap for the bottle is the best. No spills, even when it's upside down. The sipping cap is easy to clean and fun to drink out of, but it spills if it's turned on it's side or if it accidentally falls. I drive too much to always have my eye on it.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  when they say not spill proof, listen!, January 10, 2011
By lzlee
This is definitely not spill proof. I like to carry my water bottles in my big purse and definitely can't do it with this lid. It's fine using in the car with a cupholder and if I don't need to carry anything else. However, I use public transportation regularly and it's a pain to always have to hold my bottle upright -- makes it hard to hold on to books, especially if you're standing on the train or bus and trying to read at the same time. That said, it's definitely handy to have for the car.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Not A Leak-proof Cap, December 17, 2010
By Burger (New York, USA)
This cap is not leak proof. It's really useless unless you want to use it in a cup holder and sip on your way to work. Even then it's useless because the bottle is such a good insulator that my coffee never cools down much when I twist the lid top and leave it open. I prefer to just pour some in a mug and let it cool. I tried getting some use of this cafe cap by taking it to the gym and using it as a "make-believe" sports cap. But I found it bothersome to drink from it. You have to lean your head back as far as you possibly can in order to get the last few ounces in your Kanteen. What's the cafe cap really? A plain little travel mug lid with a small bar on the top you can twist to open.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Decent cafe lid, but..., July 21, 2010
By D. Pechman (Denver, CO)
Pros:

Screw cap doesn't leak around cylinder seal.
Cap is easy to take apart and clean.
Cap feels sturdy.
Cap is easy to drink out of.
Cap is dishwasher safe.
Cap is non BPA plastic.

Cons:

Cap isn't leak proof. With the cap closed, tipping and inverting leaks slightly.
Cap can splatter when opening and closing the drinking hole.
Plastic cap insert that connects the two parts of the cap is thin plastic. It might wear out or break after many cleanings.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  READ THIS FIRST! RUN AWAY!, January 29, 2012
By Daniel Stargel
Have had the large 64 oz. kleenkanteen wide-mouth bottle for two years now and LOVE IT! I enjoy the durability of not having to worry about it breaking or tumbling around in my backseat. I was getting a bit tired of the twisting on/off of the lid, though. I asked for and received the cafe "lid" for Christmas this year and can't express how disappointed I am. It is essentially a colander top/splash guard as I found out when I placed it my back floorboard, it leaned over, and it spilled water everywhere. I constantly have to watch to see if it is being jostled. Seriously, if you turn the bottle upside down with the lid on, it cuts the water flow by maybe 3/4.

And it is made entirely of plastic, which is entirely against what the company stands for.

My best advice is to get a smaller canteen with a sport top, or if you need to have the bigger size, do what I will be doing - deal with screwing the lid on/off. This lid is not worth the hassle.

P.s. Kleenkanteen - Please come up with something user-friendly and consistent with your purpose. This item is neither and it makes me second guess my purchases with you in the future.

leaks..mfg states that there isn't a travel cup made that doesn't leak! Hmmm...colorful, high priced, non-functioning product, performance not backed by company.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  best cap in reality, December 13, 2011
By o m r (chicago, il)
At first I was disappointed to find that the cap is not leak proof, and that Klean Kanteen didn't have a more sophisticated design for a sipper cap. Turns out they actually designed the most practical and healthy cap available. It's true that the cap is not leak proof, but that's the trade off for having a cleanable and long term use cap at this point. It's designed to come apart for cleaning, which is not the case with the competing brands that have what appear to be excellent designed caps for leak proofing, but since they are not designed to be taken apart are nearly impossible to clean and use longterm with proper hygiene. Others that cannot be separated for cleaning will always eventually, some actually quite quickly (see related Amazon reviews), form bacteria in between the moving parts., leading to among others, foul smell and taste, and obviously not healthy. Yes, it's plastic... but BPA free and recyclable at least. Until a non-plastic cap is manufactured, this is the most healthy and practical cap available, and has secured my continued patronage to Klean Kanteen.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Disappointing purchase, December 1, 2011
By canadiyank (Central WA)
I bought this to go with my insulated Klean Kanteen (which works almost too well!) but have been very disappointed with it. It's difficult to keep clean and is not even moderately spill-proof. I wouldn't expect to hold it upside down and nothing come out, but this you can just bump and it spills. I've owned several styles of coffee cup lids over the years and this is my least favourite. I do like that it's easier to use for coffee than the screw-on lid, but other than that it's a disappointing purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  I like it., September 24, 2011
By vwo3 (Key West)
I read the reviews before buying this cap so I knew it wasn't leak proof, which it's not. That's ok with me because I just wanted an easier way to open the water-bottle with one hand. It works great, just slide the dial with your finger to expose the opening. I have the original screw-on cap,(which is leak proof) but prefer this one for the convenience of drinking around the house or for the car cup holder. You cannot throw it into say a beach bag with books and towels and not expect it to leak, which is exactly what my wife did and found out the hard way. I like it and love the insulated bottle too. i wish they would make a larger size, a 40 oz bottle would be ideal.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice lid!, September 13, 2011
By Jcutch
I use my Klean Kanteen insulated water bottle daily. At work, I use the cafe cap for drinking ice water. It works great, although it will not keep ice water from dribbling out if knocked over (with the twist top closed). I have not tried the lid with coffee yet, maybe the twist top will seal better with a hot liquid. I've never had any leaks from where the lid seals to the bottle. Again, I use the lid every day and have since purchased a second lid. I recommend it.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Decent cafe lid, but..., July 21, 2010
By Dave (Denver, CO, United States)

1.0 out of 5 stars.  it is made in china, October 14, 2011
By frank
It is made in china, need i say more?
it leaks, pours is more the word.
Klean Kanteen actually tells you the cap leaks on their website, like they are proud of it.
comes apart for easy cleaning. prevents splashing on you while walking or driving and drinking. leaks on you while walking or driving and not drinking.
better then drinking from the open bottle mouth, but that is like being stabbed is better then being shot. you dont want either.
typical Chinese quality.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  A lid that doean't actually work as a lid, August 30, 2011
By K. Margraf (Ohio, USA)
The generally accepted purpose for a lid for a liquid container is to actually keep the stuff inide and not leak out. When we got the item one of the first things we're told is that the lids don't actually function as lids. In fact, they even tend to leak during normal drinking use. Of course, their online product description fails to mention any of this. FAIL.
