Dentistry and dental materials are inseparable. There is hardly any recognized specialty of dentistry that does not employ some type of dental material. The science and technique of dental materials have enriched tremendously over the last century. Especially the last few decades have witnessed phenomenal development of new restorative materials. Comprehensive understanding of the physical, mechanical and biological properties of restorative materials is essential for the dental students as well as practising dentists who are, by the nature of their chosen profession, life-long learners.
