Fantastic Camera, April 14, 2014

My wife and I wanted to invest in a DSLR for a Peru Trip.
This camera performed well and continues to perform to this day.
Pro's include: -Easy menu interface for beginners. -Excellent back-compatibility for older Pentax lenses. (We are currently satisfied using 2 70's era Takumar lenses with this camera. Works very well with older lenses, and the price of older lenses has allowed us to get great quality kit without breaking the bank). -Great grip -Easy to learn e-dial for shooting full manual (aperture and shutter speed controls feel intuitive) -Very rugged (this camera has been repeatedly bumped and knocked, and continues to perform without incident. -Water / Dust sealed (you have to purchase weather sealed lenses, but you can feel the quality when handling this camera -Self cleaning sensor feature that really works and shows you where dust is on the sensor. -Amazing picture quality (especially when using aftermarket lenses, this the sensor and shutter are very good) -Integrated shake reduction (allows you to use older lenses without being penalized) -LCD display (shows pertinent information easily - aperture, shutter speed, special mode, etc...) -Included 18-55mm kit lens is made well (Still a kit lens, so it is not supremely fast, sharp, providing amazing bokeh. But overall, provides a great picture and feels good in the hand. Compared to our friend's kit Nikon lens, the it feels a zillion times better. It's also nice that the barrel does not rotate as you focus or zoom. It has a manual focusing ring too =) -Very inexpensive and nice camera to break into DSLR shooting with -Uses AA batteries, which last forever if you use lithium (Standard AA's really saved us in Peru when we were remote or would not have had the time to charge a battery. Warning: standard alkaline batteries drain FAST) -JPEG + RAW Mode (Allows you to shoot both simultaneously, which makes sharing right away or viewing pictures on a resource limited computer much easier. I only shoot in this mode)
Cons include: -Noisy Shutter (never bothered me, but will some people) -Slower burst shooting mode (also does not bother me) -No video functionality (Also not a bother) -10 Megapixel (does not bother me either, I've never blown our pics up that large) -Small back LCD by today's standards
To sum it up: This camera feels great and has empowered my wife and I to take on a new hobby neither of us knew we would love. It's simple straight forwardness is not intimidating and encourages me to continue learning about photography. We definitely recommend this camera. Very impressed with Pentax and happy to have gotten this kit in the mid $200 price range. If you're interested, definitely get one.

Battery Meter says depleted after a few shots, January 30, 2014

We bought this camera in 2008 and as our 1st DSLR camera it was great. It was easy to use and took good enough pictures for us. We didn't use it very often, then sometime last year we took it out and after a couple shots it said the batteries were dead. I put in new energizer lithium batteries took a few shots and it said they were dead. Thinking it was a bad batch of batteries I tried again - same thing. Now, sometimes we can get 20 pictures, some times 2. Sometimes pulling the batteries out fixes it, sometimes not. I Googled the problem and it seems it is a wide spread issue - but usually not if using the lithium batteries. Took it to the camera shop and it was going to be $400 to fix - so now we have a hardly used brick.

Great camera for the price, May 04, 2012

My first exposure to this camera was at work, where we used it to document fire scenes. It was a good camera for that task since it is gasket protected and the scenes we were on were inherently damp and dirty. When it came time to purchase a good SLR for a once-in-a-lifetime Alaska trip, I immediately thought of this camera, figuring I didn't want foul weather to dictate whether I could use the SLR or not. Overall, I'm very pleased with the camera and recommend it for anyone looking for a weather/dust resistant SLR.

Love It <3, May 02, 2011

Pros * Beginner Setting [For those unfarmiliar w/ SLRS] * Advanced Settings [For those very familiar] Cons * Heavy weight * Hard to set in certain lighting [Just like most DSLRS]
Overall, It takes good photos. My picture quality is really dependent on the lens I use. In the same setting, the more money + better the lens- greater the photo quality [generally]. I only bought the body becasue my dad had two lenses I could use from his old Pentax 35mm camera, so I didnt purchase the lens w/ it. I bought my camera from amazon.com, I am not sure what company it was from [might be this one] but it came gray market. I called the pentax company to make sure it still had a waranty: they said it did. I would reccommend this to anyone with an intrest in DSLR photography. DO NOT just go from "cell phone" photography to this. I have used a Lumix Megazoom and am still learning new stuff about this camera. MAKE SURE you know your "stuff" on fstops, iso, shutter speed [Be sometwhat familiar]. External flashes work really well with this camera, even the cheap ones...
Getting a book on how to use this camera is a really wise idea! Or just dslr photography in general! :+)

Amazing, October 03, 2010

This camera is amazing. First of all the BEST thing about this camera is the fact that it has multiple weather seals which you cannot find in ANY other camera in the same price range. The pictures come out beautifully and the features are intuitive. I have a canon xsi which as a comparable model and the one majore complaint I have about the canon that I didn't have about the pentax k200d is the fact that the white balance system on the Pentax is MUCH better and quicker to get to which means when you need the quick picture...it is much better. Photos come out great. Battery life with the double A's is a quick fix if you just buy rechargeable batteries like the eneloops which are amazing as well. The only thing about pentax that i didn't enjoy is the software it comes with. PLEASE buy another type of photoediting software...you will need it. Other than that...amazing camera...I miss it.
