Great Book, just what I needed to prepare and study, October 18, 2009 |
 |
I needed to refresh on biology since I am going back to school and this book did the trick. I would remind you that its a Shaum's Outlines which means its pretty bare bones except for the information needed. However, the information is good and thats what matters.

Schaum's Biology Outline-Great scope and depth!, June 10, 2009 |
 |
Using Schaum's Outline review of Biology has been a great investment for studying for the Praxis II Biology exam. The scope is great for reviewing material I'm rusty on but don't have time to go over a bunch of biology textbooks. Also, the depth on various subjects such as molecular biology helped me update my knowledge of material I learned years ago. Classic subjects such as organism classification are covered as well as more advanced subjects such as genetic engineering. Should be great review for other exams as well for the same reasons.

Excellent Review Tool for Praxis II Biology Exam (20235), February 18, 2009 |
 |
I bought this book to help me re-learn my 25 year old Biology/Biochem/Ecology as a preparation for the Praxis II Biology Content Exam. After reading this book cover to cover I actually learned many of the newer theories that had been postulated since I was last in college (graduated in 1985). What I was most amazed at was how the Praxis II Bio exam exam mirrored this text by about 90%. Although it took me 2 weeks to get through the study guide I had my head full again of everything I needed for the test. I did very well on the exam, thanks to this book. Excellent in-depth study guide. Very comprehensive. A little dry but does the job. More than worth the price tag.

A concise, yet serious and well-organized treatment of the subject, May 29, 2008 |

Schaum's Outline of Biology
The title of this review says it all about my opinion on this book. Ironically enough, even the two reviewers who rated this book at 2 actually praised it too, indirectly and inadvertently. They had to rather give these low marks to themselves for failure to select a proper book they needed.

Excellent book for Biology GRE Preparation, October 6, 2007 |
 |
Although it's not marketed this way, Schaum's outline is a concise yet complete study guide for the Biology GRE subject test. Topics like the endocrine system, plant evolution and development, and nutrition, which are given short shrift in the Princeton Review and Kaplan study guides, are fully covered in this book. More diagrams are provided (although there are no color figures - ditto for PR and Kaplan), as well as handy review tables. The explanations are at an appropriate level for GRE examinees: there is not too much extraneous information. Occasionally, the authors will throw in a humorous aside or phrasing (see def. of sexual selection, parts of Ch.17, etc.), which makes you pay closer attention, but overall the tone is serious (no BS analogies or condescension here).
At the end of every chapter are worked problems in essay and multiple choice formats. These questions cover GRE material but aren't presented in the same style. If you're using this book for GRE preparation, you should also consider buying a book with one or more practice tests in order to familiarize yourself with the exam format.
