Product Description:

An unexpected rain shower causes quarreling among the members of a small community.

"On Saturday morning, the rain came down. It made the chickens squawk." But that's only the beginning. Before the sun comes out again, an entire neighborhood is in a crabby uproar. The owner of the beauty parlor squabbles with the barber, who argues with the painter, who has just accidentally bonked the barber in the head with his paint can. Then the baker unintentionally pokes the pizza man in the nose with his umbrella, and they start quarreling. Soon, "the whole block was honking, yelling, bickering, and barking." There's no end in sight... until the rain stops, the sun comes out, the air smells fresh and sweet, and a rainbow appears. Before they know it, the bickerers are helping each other clean up the mess caused by the ruckus, and everyone's smiling again.

David Shannon, Caldecott Honor artist of No, David!, brings his own brand of sunshine to readers. His rollicking text and bright, witty caricatures of grumpy neighbors and animals will put a smile on every reader's face, rain or shine. Surprising angles (we see the painter's paint-spattered bottom from below as he descends his ladder) may even make gloomy readers laugh out loud! This book is perfect for brightening a dreary gray day. (Ages 4 to 8) --Emilie Coulter

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Wonderful!, December 2, 2000
By Roz Levine
The Rain Came Down...which made the chickens squawk, then the cat yowled and the dog barked. A man yelled at the dog and woke his sleeping baby. His wife heard the baby crying and shouted to her husband to "stop all that yelling". A policeman hearing the yelling, stops his car in the middle of the street to investigate which causes a cab driver to start honking, which makes the ice-cream man turn up the music in his truck. A painter accidently hits a barber with a falling paint can, a baker pokes the pizza man with his umbrella, a boy chasing his toy boat down a streaming gutter, splashes a little girl and there's arguing, crying, honking and yelling up and down the street.....Until the rain suddenly stops and so does the noise. The sun comes out, the air smells fresh and clean and a rainbow appears. Slowly, everyone calms down and helps each other straighten out the mess and get back to what they were doing before the shower. David Shannon's book about the chaos that occurs because of an unexpected rain storm is a wonderful chain of events story that will delight and amuse youngsters of all ages. His vibrant and very expressive illustrations become busier and more detailed with each addition to the unfortunate happenings this storm causes, until they almost spill off the page. This is a terrific picture book that will have your youngsters entranced and giggling every time it's read!

2.0 out of 5 stars.  The Rain Comes Down But That's Just About All, September 24, 2000
By SurroundedByBooks (Prescott, AZ, United States)
The pictures are glorious; however, the story is extremely disappointing. There is no real conflict and thus no conflict resolution - which is so important to the little ones. The rain does, indeed, come down, but that's just about all that happens. Unfortunately, this latest book by Mr. Shannon does not measure up to his wonderfully delightful David series or his great cautionary tale, A Bad Case of Stripes - all of which bring a great big smile to my heart just thinking about them.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Shannon' art a delight, October 8, 2000
By Edward M. Thron (Green Bay, WI USA)
The energy and excitement in Shannon's art brings a simple thunderstorm day to life. A very different book than his No, David! Series with one exception-the wit of the illustrations and the rendering of true emotions of anger, surprise, elation and affection. The words are straightforward, the colors bright, primary and active. As usual, Shannon's rendering of eyes and mouths, our two most expressive features, delight and amaze. Highly recommended for reading to small groups who can gather around and participate in the color, art and emotions of the characters. (Preschool, certainly, but for older readers to capture emotion in art).

5.0 out of 5 stars.  When it rains, it pours!, October 20, 2002
By A Customer
To start a book review by raving about the beautiful art is unusual, but the illustrations in this book are fantastic. My kids were captivated by the pictures and wanted to know who would be affected by the rain next. The kids are 3 and 2 and I was amazed that even the 2 year old waited for the page to be turned and never left my lap. I was very impressed by the book and thankfully, so were the kids!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  A great Rainy Day book to read, November 4, 2006
By Hart- 4- Kids (Toledo, Ohio)
I am an in home day care provider and purchase many books. My little toddlers and preschoolers can't wait for storytime each day. When I read this book to them immediately they caught on to the repetition of "And the rain came down." Every day at storytime when its raining outside, my one little 3 yr old says, "Read, And The Rain Came Down." The art work is very colorful and the different sounds happening keeps their interest. This has become a classic in my day care especially for rainy days, to excite the children.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Rainy day fun, courtesy of those gorgeous illustrations, May 18, 2008
By Scatter-brained book fan (Cache Valley, Utah)
David Shannon unleashes his incredible illustrating talent on expressions of panic as a sudden rainstorm wreaks havoc in a town when the inhabitants are being selfish and rude. It's a little moralistic, but still manages to be a good story and I do appreciate a postive message. What I like best about this one are the illustrations. Despite the rainy day the pages are alive with color and detail and are a wonder to behold.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  We love David Shannon's books!, September 23, 2005
By Fianel (Queens, New York)
This book is just another to add to our wonderful collection of David Shannon's books. The book is beautifully illustrated and carries you through the grumpy side of a rainy day to the happy side of having the sun come out. My son enjoyed this book enormously as he does with all of Mr. Shannon's works. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Love the Fun Story and Great Pictures, March 25, 2011
By K. Groh (Pennsylvania)
This is a fun story to read aloud to one or many children. As the rain continues, everybody get meaner and grumpier. One event leads to another bad event and eventually, the whole street of people are mad. Then the sun come out and one by one, people are nicer, friendlier, more giving.

What I really like about this story is that in a round about way, it shows how a bad mood can spread and so can a good mood. It's all about the 'karma' you generate.

The pictures are very comical and perfect for the story and characters.

I recently read this to my daughter's first grade classroom and they all had a great time, predicting what was going to happen and reading along as some of the text repeats.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  This book is great!, May 5, 2008
By Two boys Mama (Philadelphia, PA USA)
My sister, who is a second grade teacher, originally bought this book for my son - now 2 1/2. He LOVES this book! He loved it when he got it months ago and still loves it today. It has a lot of things going on that allow questions and observations. Plus it has a great underlying theme of being crabby when it is raining and seeing the world in a whole new light when the sun comes out. We've bought this for many of our friends kids as gifts because we love it so much.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  wonderful illustrations from another time, July 22, 2007
By abuelita (Chapel Hill, NC)
My grandchildren (3 and 5) and I really enjoy this book.
The story is subtle, and yet I feel sure they can reference back to this
concept of 'grumpy on rainy days, suddenly smiling when the sun comes out'
as they grow older.
The illustrations are superb - they do hark back to an earlier time -
which is why I love the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  The rain came down..., May 11, 2007
By RckStrGrl21 (Carlsbad, Ca)
This book I purchased for my preschool (ages 3-4) and I do have to say that this book is a little long for their attention spans, but with a lot of enthusiasm by me (the reader) they were able to stick with it. The illistrations are phenominal, and it does have a great moral of the story. I enjoy books that have great oppertunities for discussion and this one does!

I am very pleased with my purchase and with a couple more readings to them, they will be hooked!
