Caldecott Honor artist and bestseller David Shannon make readers laugh aloud when young Spencer's mountain of toys becomes overwelming. A story with universal appeal
"When David gets in trouble, he always says . . . 'NO! It's not my fault! I didn't mean to! It was an accident!'" Whatever the situation, David's got a good excuse. And no matter what he's done "wrong," it's never really his fault.
Soon, though, David realizes that making excuses makes him feel bad, and saying he's sorry makes him feel better. Once again, David Shannon entertains us with young David's mischievous antics and a lighthearted story that's sure to leave kids (and parents) laughing.

|
"No" and "David" were the first words David Shannon learned how to spell. Shannon's Caldecott Honor Book No, David! is based on a book he made as a child showing a kid doing all the things he isn't supposed to do. In the sequel David Goes to School, it turns out that teachers say no, too. And in this third picture book, it's David's turn to talk back. What does he say when he gets in trouble? "I didn't mean to." (Skateboarding into a lamp table.) "It was an accident!" (Hitting a baseball into a window.) "I forgot!" (Happily walking down the street... in his underpants.) "But Dad says it!" (Boy in corner with mouth full of soap.) Of course, the cat-tail-pulling, burping, grape-juice-dropping, runny-egg-hating, out-of-control David wins us over in the end. A defiant "No, it wasn't me!" evolves into a guilt-ridden, late-at-night shout, "Yes! It was me! I'm sorry. I love you, Mom." Awwww. Shannon's expressive, childlike paintings of the round-headed, shark-toothed David-in-trouble perfectly capture the manic joys of early boyhood. (Ages 3 and older) --Karin Snelson

Excuses, Excuses....., October 3, 2002
By Roz Levine
|
|
Irrepressible David is back in all his little boy glory, and as he tells us on the title page, "NO! It's not my fault!" Whether he's skateboarding into furniture, making a silly face during class pictures, pulling the cat's tail, or eating the dog's biscuits, burping loudly at meals, sneaking a taste of icing off the cake before dinner, or saying bad words, he's got a logical answer for everything. "I didn't mean to!" "I forgot!" "I couldn't help it!" "No, it wasn't me!" "It was an accident!" "But Dad says it!" Nothing is really his fault, he's just a victim of circumstance. Or is he... Late at night, lying in bed, David has an epiphany, "Yes! It was me!" and apologizes to his mother as she tucks him, lovingly, back in bed..... David Shannon captures the essence of a busy, take charge preschooler, filled with manic energy, in this sequel to No, David! and David Goes To School. Little ones will easily identify with the trials and tribulations of David's world as he rockets through his day from one mishap to the next. Mr Shannon's exaggerated, bold and bright, childlike illustrations steal the show with marvelous facial expression and hilarious details. David Gets In Trouble begs to be read aloud at story time, and is sure to be an often asked for preschool crowd pleaser.

Not as funny, November 1, 2002

The first 2 David books are hysterical & had my kids rolling on the floor. This one needed some explaining as to why what he was doing was wrong. I was a little disappointed with this one, but a huge fan of the others.

Still a treat., October 22, 2002

This is definitely not as entertaining as the original "No, David!" or even "David goest to school" but if you are like my kids and me, a David fan, you will still get some enjoyment out of it. Overall, like the previous books, it still manages to express the magic of childhood: the right to make mistakes, expect forgiveness and mosty importantly, love.

I have put this book away indefinitely. Ever since reading this to my twins (almost 3 years old) they have decided to imitate David and pull the cat's tail. I am not sure I understand the message intended from this book. Is it funny to be naughty? David's does not experience enough consequences from his misbehavior.

Boys, March 13, 2003
By R. Hipple (Madison, NJ United States)

My 3 boys and 1 girl love David. I love this book especially. I had personally experienced all of the things David does in this book and it really helps me to find humor in these things and realize that they are children. We all get a chuckle from David and also then realize that David learns from his mistakes.

Cute book, April 27, 2005
By Lilith79 (Michigan)
|
|
I think this is a cute book. My son, who is delayed in learning, is able to read by sight of the pictures in this book.
However, I am rather dismayed at the page with the caption "But daddy says it!" because of the picture of David sitting in the bathroom with a bar of soap in his mouth. We don't feel that is an appropriate form of punishment, and it's rather difficult to explain to young children why David has soap in his mouth. In that regard, I am happy I don't own it and only checked it out of the library.

My son's favorite book from age 2-4, February 24, 2006
By krkelley (McAlester, OK USA)
|
|
Excellent children's book for a child in the 2-4 range. Everything he does is so boy-like and "cute" in such the way that little boys are (curious, active, hyper, etc.). Every pre-school age child I've ever read this to loves it. The pictures and simple story are ideal, and the humor is perfect for this age. To be cynical for just one minute, actually this story is dated. 'Cause were it really present day, the title would be "David Gets Put on Medication" because of course, though David is just a perfect example of the TYPICAL little boy, for some reason our schools and parents these days can't accept it as normal/healthy.

David Gets in Trouble, July 20, 2005
By J. Shuey (Pennsylvania)
|
|
David Shannon's book DAVID GETS IN TROUBLE is an excellent choice for beginning readers. When I read it to my three year old nephew, he likes to participate by reading along with me. The simple text and familiar plot allows young children to realize they are not the only ones who "get in trouble." I especially like the message at the end that no matter what David does, his mother will always love him.

A very cute book. especially if you have an ornery boy!, April 23, 2005
By c2 (Dublin, Ohio)
|
|
David fits the stereotype of most ornery boys. Going to school without his pants, making faces into the camera during his school picture, and spilling his grape juice all over the floor while trying to carry too much stuff is very reminiscent of many things that happen in a young boy's life. You have to get this book. Hands down, this is quite funny for little ones to read simply because they can relate to poor David and his troubles. My little one just has to read this over, and over, and over again until the pages are going to wear out, I think! It's very neat to see how David finally says it was he that did all the bad things that day and finally says, "I'm Sorry." His mother comes in his room and he tells her that he loves her before drifting off to sleep. Again, no matter how bad or ornery a little one may be, he is always loved by his mother which these "David" books always demonstrate. A great book, providing much fun and enjoyment in our house on a daily basis. Not too much in the way of verbage on each page but it truly is funny and cute to see all the antics little David tries to dream up. Highly recommend!

Great for kids that hear NO! a lot!, July 23, 2004
By torysmama (Yorktown, VA USA)
|
|
As the mother of an overly active 4 year old boy recently diagnoised with ADHD, this book, as well as all the books in the NO, David! series do a fabulous job addressing the troubles that many young children get into. Even David, the hero of this story, gets into trouble sometimes! The most important message, however, is that no matter what David does, his mom will always love him. It's the behavior that isn't liked!

all boy, April 20, 2005
By Melissa Sack (georgia)
|
|
David is a little boy who is always into something. He goes about his day getting into lots of things he shouldn't. He unrolled the toilet paper off the roll in the bathroom. He refuses to eat his supper, uses the bathroom in his diaper, and will not be still to get dressed for bed! His mom has a hard time with him. When it's bedtime she reads him a story and tells him she loves him!
The book demonstrates that even when a child makes bad choices, parents love them anyway.
The book is great for babies and toddlers. It's made of sturdy board pages and has very little text.

My David loved this book., March 2, 2005
By Joelle Campbell (San Jose, CA United States)
|
|
My 4 year old son (also named David) and I read this book together one evening. We both laughed until we were in tears. It's almost as if the author came to our house and wrote about a typical day. Whenever we read it, my son says, "Look at what I'm doing now" and dissolves into fits of laughter. He feels the book is about him and as far as I'm concerned, it's a perfect fit.
We also loved "David Goes To School" and are looking forward to "Oh, David!"

good and bad, January 6, 2005
By kathy
|
|
My two year old loves it and "reads" it verbatim. As to not give her any ideas, I explain what David is doing wrong in each picture and why it is a bad choice. Reading it with my child has convinced me never to say "no" but to actually discuss negative behavior! No David, No David, No David....not effective in the story, not effective in real life. Use it as a tool to help discuss good and bad choices with your child, not make bad behavior funny. The book also demonstrates that even when a child makes bad choices, parents love them anyway.

In the story David Gets in Trouble By David Shannon I think it is a terrific book. It takes place in the house. The characters are David, and his mom. It is about a boy named David that gets in trouble all the time. Close to the end it is a funny part. The pictures are hilarious. The words are great. It is a fantastic story too!

The illustrations are very distressing to look at. It gives me a sick in the gut feeling that I usually only get in a surrealist gallery. I'm not sure that this book has a redeeming message. Yes, kids misbehave. Yes, they don't want to take personal responsibility. I would have liked to see David learn that he was in charge of his actions.

Wonderful in it's simplicity, March 31, 2011
By book lover in CA (California Bay Area)
|
|
My son's name is David so I had to investigate the "David" books. This one as well as the others are short on words but big on content. As we read it and go through each situation, there are SO MANY opportunities to teach your child. Listening to what you're told and being shown the consequences when David ignores his Mom. Consideration for animals. My favorite is when he denies eating the cake and gets sent to bed. What an incredibly simple way to show a child what a lie is and a great chance as a parent to explain why it's wrong. And at the end of all the David books there is always an affirmation of love from David's mom. I explain that to my (sometimes David-like) son that no matter what you do or how angry I might get about it, I always love you no matter what.

Great For Discussion, April 21, 2009
By Mom2Luv (Bronx NY USA)
|
|
This book is very good for increasing reasoning and general discussion with my son. There are not many words in the book, so if you are looking for a book for "reading" then this is not for you. I love asking my son questions like "What should David's mother do?" "Why do you think that David got in trouble for that?" "Why is what David did dangerous?" "How would you behave in that situation?". Sometimes I act like I am David so that my son can "correct" my behavior, or sometimes we think of silly answers to "What should his mom do?" Answer...Make him go to school with his clothes on backward!
I love this series and I think that it is a lot of fun for me and my 6 year old.

I bought this book for my students to enjoy. We have a student named David, who has taken a great liking to 2 other 'David' stories, and I saw this and knew it would be a great addition to our class library. Our favorite page is "I Forgot!" - cracks all of us up every time.
The pictures are helpful for struggling readers, and having so few words on the page makes all of my kids feel accomplished when they finish the book :).

not as good as 'no, david!', July 8, 2008
By thersites
|
|
While this is still a fun book, our 3 year-old (and her daddy, i admit) found this one not nearly as good as "No, David!"[ASIN:0590930036 No David!]]; on a number of the pages, it's not clear why or how David got in trouble.
(Edit added 3 years later) - I think I was much too harsh. Our 3 year-old is now our 6 year-old, and this is still one of her favorite books, which I think says a lot for it. And once you've read it a few times it's pretty clear why and how David got in trouble :). Upping from 3 stars to 4.
What makes the David series so attractive is that the child gets to empathize with David, while also getting to feel a bit "grown-up" for knowing better than to act as David does. And they all end with David taking responsibility for his actions and getting hugs and love. Very nice.

David's always in trouble, whether he pulls the cat's tail-he says she likes it- or sticks his finger in the cake-leaving evidence all over his face.
This book is just as cute as the other 'No, David' books. Once again, David Shannon helps every child- and adult- understand David's world with his simple, yet beautiful pictures and simple phrases. My boys love it and I do, too.

2 Year Old Son Decided This Was His NEW FAVORITE!, April 5, 2008
By K. Ham (Northwest Arkansas, USA)
|
|
My son ADORES this book and I'm delighted to see that there are more David books for us to order! I simply logged in to share my experiences with this book, but I'll absolutely be ordering more!
Anytime I tell my two year old son to go get a book, he gleefully says, "David Trouble!!!" and dashes away to get it. He can't get enough of this one.
I find it useful because it demonstrates David doing things that are very much current "issues" in our house, such as: spilling, pulling the pet's tail, and throwing balls--and what can happen when you do! In the midst of our terrible twos, these are important lessons and they help my son comprehend that these are rules for EVERYONE; they are not random dictates handed down by his mean old parents. ;) Pulling an animal's tail is unacceptable behavior in every house, not just ours.
True Mom confession...I also enjoy it because there aren't a great deal of words for me to read, the illustrations tell much of the story. And my son really studies the pages. I don't have to do very much to read this to him when I'm wiped out! He just sits on my lap and studies each page intently. And they really are beautiful, vivid watercolors. Very pretty. (Much like on the cover, if that helps explain what I mean.)
Anyway, we enjoy it so much that I came write a review...did I mention I have a two year old?!? That speaks volumes! HA! I hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

I wish there were more David books out there!!!, March 27, 2008
By Diesel's Mom (Raymore, MO USA)

|
I recently started taking my 2 year old boy to the library and that's where we came across these David books. We have had the same three David Books (No David, David Gets in Trouble, and David Goes to School) checked out and re-checked out for about three months now. He insists that we read all three books everynight before bed. David Shannon definately pinned the nail on the head with little boys and this book. Since there are few words in the book itself, we've gone further into detail of what's going on in the picture's. He's even gotten to the point of saying what words the book does have on each page as soon as we turn to it. He knows exactly what's going on with David and what David's done wrong. It has even started to help with explaining things that he's done wrong by referencing when "David" did that. Especially the one where you see David with a bar of soap in his mouth, the book says, "But Daddy says it", well we've told my son that David got the soap in his mouth because he told his mommy/daddy No!, that way when he tells us no, we ask him, "Remember what happened to David when he told his mommy no?" and he'll always respond with a "I'm Sorry, I love you mommy" (which is the last two pages of the book).

WELL, THE AUTHOR SURE KNOWS LITTLE BOYS, September 19, 2007
By D. Blankenship (The Ozarks)
|
|
David Shannon has little boys and their behavior pretty well nailed here. David, the little boy in the book is soooo typical. He simply cannot stay out of trouble and, when he is inevitability caught, it is never ever his fault. He has an excuse for everything. To be honest, Daid is a pretty fast and creative thinker for a little one. You sort of have to admire that trait in a kid. Obviously most little boys will grow out of this, but it is a part of the fun of being a kid. I doubt seriously if a child will read this book and pick up "bad ideas" from it. Those ideas have already been learned from parents and friends by this age. The art work in this small book is great and quite appealing. Great story, great characters, great art and the kids love to have the book read to them. What more could you want?

My 2 year old loves David, November 6, 2003
By A Customer

My 2 year old knew David from his daycare where they read No, David. When we saw David Gets in Trouble at the book fair, he had to have it. Now he knows the whole thing by heart and he "reads" it over and over again with sound effects (see Excuse me page) and even a very sweet I'm sorry. He brings it in the car with him and when he gets out, he kisses the book and tells David to be good until he gets back. When he is especially naughty, I call him my little David. We have the other two David books on his Christmas wish list.

Great Illustrations, November 22, 2009
By readaholic (Dallas, TX)

Okay, I have very impressionable, incorrigible nieces and nephews. If they read this book, they would run even more amok! David gets in trouble on every page. I think it would be a cute book for the kid who never got in trouble, but with my rambunctious group - No way! LOL This seems to be a popular author, so I will try a couple of his other books and see if they are more in keeping with funny escapes (not just talking back and pouting) and occasional consequences. The illustrator is phenomenal though and really love the colors and expressions throughout the book.
